- 0:03Speaker 2: Cars are our passion, building, restoring or modifying.
- 0:08Speaker 1: It's about making it our own.
- 0:10Speaker 3: It's an obsession. Shannons know what it's worth.
- 0:14Speaker 1: That's why the agreed value includes all your modifications.
- 0:17Speaker 3: Get a quote online today.
- 0:19Speaker 4: This is the moment, then, that we've all been waiting
- 0:21Speaker 4: for for in a romax.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Here comes Oscar Piastree, Lando Norris.
- 0:26Speaker 4: They aren't playing hardball out there at the moment. Steve
- 0:29Speaker 4: peverchool moment to twenty twenty four.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to Pit Talk, brought to you by Shannon's.
- 0:39Speaker 2: On this week's episode, Max Mustappen claims his third win
- 0:42Speaker 2: of the season ahead of McLaren in a muddle over
- 0:45Speaker 2: team orders with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastre, And we
- 0:48Speaker 2: look back at the Murder GP round in Barcelona and
- 0:51Speaker 2: ahead to this weekend's first and duro in the Supercars Championship.
- 0:55Speaker 2: My name is Michael Lomonado. It's great to have your
- 0:57Speaker 2: company and the company of my co host. Was he
- 0:59Speaker 2: saying boo or Zach boo? Rounds at the podium ceremony.
- 1:02Speaker 2: It's a math question. I'll say both.
- 1:05Speaker 4: It's nice to spread nice to spread that that was
- 1:07Speaker 4: quite an interesting little aside of many things that were
- 1:10Speaker 4: interesting in the tail end of that Grand Prix that
- 1:12Speaker 4: I'm sure we'll get to in the next half an hour.
- 1:14Speaker 3: But I didn't quite see that coming.
- 1:15Speaker 1: No, I was surprised by that.
- 1:16Speaker 2: I mean, you know, we know that the crowd in
- 1:18Speaker 2: Monsu is always partisan, but not normally about third party.
- 1:21Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly, it's they had an opinion on everything. Piastre
- 1:25Speaker 4: has good Italian surname, isn't it.
- 1:26Speaker 2: I suppose though they assumed that he must have been
- 1:28Speaker 2: your future Ferrari driver. I guess maybe you will be
- 1:31Speaker 2: a little bit of a twist, I think. But of
- 1:33Speaker 2: course that was after what became the unexpected climax of
- 1:37Speaker 2: this Grand Prix, because despite very action packed first few laps,
- 1:40Speaker 2: not too much happened in the middle of the Grand Prix,
- 1:42Speaker 2: at least in terms of the lead battle, until the
- 1:45Speaker 2: last ten or so laps when it came time for
- 1:47Speaker 2: McLaren to make its pit stops for Norris and Piastre,
- 1:49Speaker 2: and second and third pretty comfortable but uncompetitive, I suppose,
- 1:52Speaker 2: second or third, non contested second and third and lo
- 1:55Speaker 2: and behold, Norris ended up with a slow pit stop
- 1:57Speaker 2: and behind Piastre and the contentious is and of course
- 2:00Speaker 2: has been the talking point in the Formula One world
- 2:02Speaker 2: for the last and Sprenk Corps so hours was that
- 2:04Speaker 2: McLaren asked them to change back. The team justified afterwards
- 2:09Speaker 2: this was about fairness, sporting fairness. Was a team mistake
- 2:12Speaker 2: the drivers for on their accounts, of course unsurprising, I
- 2:17Speaker 2: supposed toad the party line afterwards. That's been very much
- 2:20Speaker 2: the story at McLaren all season. Look, let's just start.
- 2:24Speaker 2: What was your reaction to it.
- 2:26Speaker 4: I'd like to read a piece from a story that
- 2:29Speaker 4: I read today from a bloke called Michael Lemanata from
- 2:32Speaker 4: Fox sports dot Com that are you going to I'm
- 2:34Speaker 4: going to read your own story back to you, because
- 2:36Speaker 4: this sums it up quite nicely.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Team orders are common in Formula One.
- 2:39Speaker 4: Usually they take place when a following driver is clearly
- 2:42Speaker 4: faster than the leader, or when they're on different strategies. Rare, However,
- 2:46Speaker 4: does a team intervene on the grounds of natural justice?
- 2:49Speaker 4: Rareer still does it happen when there's a championship on
- 2:51Speaker 4: the line. It's ironic that McLaren's laudable efforts to be
- 2:54Speaker 4: scrupulously fair in this championship battle risk the team itself
- 2:58Speaker 4: becoming the chief source of controversy. So the reason, well,
- 3:03Speaker 4: thank you, But to my mind, are we now starting
- 3:08Speaker 4: to litigate over luck?
- 3:10Speaker 3: Are we? And what can of worms?
- 3:13Speaker 4: Have we just taken the lid off here if you're McLaren,
- 3:16Speaker 4: because look, Lando Norris was, to use a Sky Sports word, robbed.
- 3:20Speaker 4: He had a really unfortunate pit stop. Nothing to do
- 3:23Speaker 4: with him, He did nothing wrong to start litigating the
- 3:28Speaker 4: reversal of positions and the way we're going to allow
- 3:31Speaker 4: these two to race based on luck? Where does this end?
- 3:36Speaker 4: Is there a natural end point to this? Is the
- 3:38Speaker 4: end point where they've won the Constructor's Championshi, which they'll
- 3:41Speaker 4: do next round in Baku. Is the end where Max
- 3:44Speaker 4: Vstappen is mathematically eliminated from title contention, and then only
- 3:48Speaker 4: a McLaren can win the World Championship. So you can't
- 3:51Speaker 4: justify decisions like this based on the fact that someone
- 3:53Speaker 4: I was quite sneaking. If we don't do this properly,
- 3:56Speaker 4: I just thought it was a massive overreach. And yes,
- 3:59Speaker 4: Oscarpe has his championship lead by virtue of the fact
- 4:01Speaker 4: that Lando Norris had a very unlucky engine failure in Zandfort.
- 4:05Speaker 3: This was another piece of poor luck for Norris.
- 4:07Speaker 4: But are we really going to start flipping drivers around
- 4:10Speaker 4: based on fortune? And where does this actually stop? I mean,
- 4:13Speaker 4: are we in a situation now where McLaren said, Oscar Piastri. Look,
- 4:18Speaker 4: Norris had a D and F and lost eighteen points
- 4:20Speaker 4: on a day where you won the Grand Prix at
- 4:21Speaker 4: Zandvoort because of something that was out of his control.
- 4:24Speaker 4: So we'd like you to also lose eighteen points at
- 4:27Speaker 4: some point to make Where do we draw the line
- 4:28Speaker 4: with this?
- 4:29Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 4:29Speaker 2: I think that for me is the interesting point, and
- 4:32Speaker 2: I do think this is a more This is really
- 4:35Speaker 2: an unusually nuanced situation in my opinion, at least because
- 4:40Speaker 2: it's rare. I mean, every circumstance is when we one
- 4:42Speaker 2: is different, right, every incident we ever analyze, they're very
- 4:45Speaker 2: rarely that a tour arelike enough to say, well, you know,
- 4:48Speaker 2: this is what should have been done, because it has
- 4:50Speaker 2: been done. But I find this so interesting because in
- 4:54Speaker 2: this circumstance you almost had your test tube experiment, right,
- 4:58Speaker 2: These too cars virtually had no one else star racing
- 5:00Speaker 2: against they happened to be roughly the same place on track.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Two pit stops that were meant to be identical, exactly
- 5:05Speaker 2: the same tis pretty much the same age two times
- 5:07Speaker 2: it almost exactly as fast as one another, and you
- 5:10Speaker 2: happen to get this poor like.
- 5:11Speaker 1: So I kind of see that.
- 5:12Speaker 2: But then there's that ethical element, I guess from the
- 5:15Speaker 2: team's perspective, which is they made a mistake and interfere
- 5:18Speaker 2: in the championship unexpectedly in a way they didn't want to.
- 5:21Speaker 2: I thought it was interesting the way that I think
- 5:24Speaker 2: it was Andrea stellar, if not as Oscar Piastre.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Certainly you talked.
- 5:26Speaker 2: About wanting to take the heat off the team members
- 5:29Speaker 2: who were not the high profile athletes, which I also
- 5:33Speaker 2: found kind of interesting. One album and I want to
- 5:36Speaker 2: put to you though, I sort of think he has
- 5:37Speaker 2: gone a little.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Bit under the radar, and Pastri.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Sort of alluded to this in his Sky Sports post
- 5:41Speaker 2: raise interview, which I can see on the KO replay.
- 5:44Speaker 2: He only alluded to it, so I guess it's sort
- 5:46Speaker 2: of my interpretation, but he talked about if this had happened,
- 5:49Speaker 2: because it's important to remember as well, the mechanics do
- 5:51Speaker 2: pit stops a jointly from both garags right, and there's
- 5:55Speaker 2: this weird that's the element of motorsport that's unusual. But
- 5:58Speaker 2: the risk of creating a rift between in the garage
- 6:00Speaker 2: its then starts to happen if a pitstop, because we
- 6:02Speaker 2: don't know who was on that front left, we know
- 6:04Speaker 2: whose garage was from was on that front left tire,
- 6:06Speaker 2: the risk of a rift happening because the focus goes
- 6:09Speaker 2: on the mechanics that made a mistake and influence the championship.
- 6:11Speaker 1: I also thought was interesting. There are a lot of elements.
- 6:13Speaker 2: I'm not necessarily saying I'm falling on either side of
- 6:15Speaker 2: the Fenceyer, I do have a opinion, I suppose, but
- 6:18Speaker 2: it changes a lot.
- 6:19Speaker 1: I'd be surprised.
- 6:21Speaker 2: But there's a lot that goes into this decision more
- 6:23Speaker 2: than just while he was ahead before and now he's
- 6:26Speaker 2: not and we should go back to it. And I
- 6:28Speaker 2: found that kind of interesting the way Pastri summed it up.
- 6:30Speaker 4: But you're talking about the human element. This is a
- 6:33Speaker 4: human sport, Like if we want to take the human
- 6:34Speaker 4: element out of it and the randoms, then why don't
- 6:37Speaker 4: we just simulate all of this and not bother actually
- 6:39Speaker 4: having a world championship at this point, let's just do
- 6:40Speaker 4: it all on someone's laptop and let us know who.
- 6:42Speaker 2: We watched that automated Racing League once and that wasn't
- 6:46Speaker 2: very good.
- 6:47Speaker 4: Right, So what was interesting to me is Piastre's reaction here.
- 6:54Speaker 4: I actually thought he played this really really intelligently in
- 6:58Speaker 4: that clearly he's not going to be happy with the
- 7:01Speaker 4: outcome here. I thought he put the question out over
- 7:03Speaker 4: the radio because you know that's going to be broadcast,
- 7:07Speaker 4: and he has kept his powder dry here for two reasons. One,
- 7:10Speaker 4: he has a thirty one point championship lead. Two, there's
- 7:13Speaker 4: eight rounds to go. So if they're now going to
- 7:15Speaker 4: start setting a precedent for we are going to treat
- 7:17Speaker 4: these two drivers unscrupulously fairly the entire way through. This
- 7:21Speaker 4: may pay Piastre back somewhere down the line if he
- 7:24Speaker 4: actually needs it to be paid back. So to my mind,
- 7:27Speaker 4: that's a card that he now has to play at
- 7:30Speaker 4: a moment that he could deploy that for his own benefit.
- 7:34Speaker 4: And McLaren are kind of boxed into a bit of
- 7:36Speaker 4: a corner here because if he chooses to play this card,
- 7:39Speaker 4: if he needs to play it, they can't very well,
- 7:41Speaker 4: go back on what they've done in this instance, because
- 7:43Speaker 4: that's going to unravel all of the good they're trying
- 7:45Speaker 4: to do here by trying to make this as fair
- 7:47Speaker 4: as possible. And so to my mind, I thought he
- 7:50Speaker 4: handled it. Now, whether that was prerehearsed or in the
- 7:52Speaker 4: moment or whatever, I actually thought that he handled it
- 7:54Speaker 4: incredibly well, and that you can kick up a massive
- 7:57Speaker 4: stink here and you go back through Formula one history
- 8:00Speaker 4: and you can nominate ten drivers right now that would
- 8:02Speaker 4: have thrown every toy they had out of the cot.
- 8:05Speaker 3: But there's eight rounds to go. That's the key part
- 8:07Speaker 3: for me.
- 8:07Speaker 4: If this is happening with three rounds to go, it's
- 8:10Speaker 4: a different response, even if the points gap is still
- 8:12Speaker 4: the same. If there's three rounds left, then perhaps you
- 8:14Speaker 4: go hang on a minute, No, no, no, that's not right.
- 8:17Speaker 4: He's kept his power to drive for another day, and
- 8:19Speaker 4: it's a card that he will be able to play
- 8:21Speaker 4: at some point if he needs to. Now, whether that
- 8:24Speaker 4: was intentional or not, I thought in the moment that
- 8:26Speaker 4: was actually pretty savvy.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:28Speaker 2: I like the idea, you know, we talked about it
- 8:30Speaker 2: after the Dutch Grand Prix. Has got this big lead now,
- 8:32Speaker 2: and we talked about, well, now he can start to
- 8:33Speaker 2: play a little bit that numbers game. It doesn't have
- 8:36Speaker 2: to be at one hundred percent all the time. I
- 8:38Speaker 2: actually think in this instance it wasn't so much the
- 8:40Speaker 2: equation saying well I don't necessarily need the three points.
- 8:43Speaker 2: It felt to me like those three points have been
- 8:45Speaker 2: cashed in for something else, yep, which is this political card.
- 8:48Speaker 1: And it reminds me.
- 8:49Speaker 2: And we talked about this after the British Grand Prix
- 8:51Speaker 2: the way he responded after the penalty for the safety car,
- 8:53Speaker 2: and he put the question out there, and he surely
- 8:55Speaker 2: didn't expect a positive response from but he said, well,
- 8:57Speaker 2: if you guys think the penalty was unfair, yep, why
- 9:00Speaker 2: don't we just back and we'll.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Go, we'll race again.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Of course it wasn't going to happen, But then again
- 9:04Speaker 2: I say, of course something similar ish happened this weekend
- 9:09Speaker 2: ish part.
- 9:11Speaker 1: But that's another little building block for.
- 9:13Speaker 2: An argument he may need to make down the line,
- 9:16Speaker 2: which I think is very interesting because if we take
- 9:18Speaker 2: to the logical extension, the decision making mclarent appears to
- 9:21Speaker 2: have made. It's worth emphasizing here as well, Andreas Stelle
- 9:24Speaker 2: in particular, says, and I like the way he says
- 9:26Speaker 2: it because I think it gets him out of some
- 9:28Speaker 2: needing to answer some questions, and for what it's worth.
- 9:30Speaker 1: I think he manages the team very well.
- 9:32Speaker 2: I'm not being critical of him, but he talks about
- 9:34Speaker 2: not rules but values and principles.
- 9:36Speaker 1: And the great thing about values in principles is it's
- 9:38Speaker 1: up to you to decide how they kind of it's
- 9:40Speaker 1: not a hard and fast rule r.
- 9:42Speaker 2: But these principles decided in Hungry as an example, I
- 9:46Speaker 2: know we've already mentioned this, but that Lando Norris accidentally
- 9:49Speaker 2: ending up on the fastest strategy and it was an accident,
- 9:51Speaker 2: but that that was fair enough, and the penalty in
- 9:54Speaker 2: Silicon was fair enough. Maybe going forward now, if we
- 9:58Speaker 2: find ourselves in a similar situation, Patrick Piastri gets a
- 10:01Speaker 2: great start leading the race. Norris is fifth, but he
- 10:03Speaker 2: does the one stop whatever is the case, and ends
- 10:05Speaker 2: up ahead.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Piastre says, but he's on it.
- 10:08Speaker 2: If you've given him a different strategy, you've affected the
- 10:11Speaker 2: outcome of this race without my Because the other thing
- 10:14Speaker 2: that I think is important distinction here is that Norris
- 10:16Speaker 2: gave his permission to be pit second. Yes, And at
- 10:20Speaker 2: that point, because he's the lead driver, he gets to
- 10:22Speaker 2: control what happens. You can argue that that's kind of
- 10:24Speaker 2: on him what happened subsequent to that, if he is
- 10:26Speaker 2: a slow stop, it you see the control of that.
- 10:29Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:29Speaker 2: And so I think that this now, and this is
- 10:32Speaker 2: the problem for McLaren going forward, because while I'm surprising
- 10:35Speaker 2: if exactly this situation happened again, these drivers are so
- 10:38Speaker 2: closely matched, and we know that at some races you
- 10:41Speaker 2: do have other drivers in the mix, it's not inconceivable
- 10:44Speaker 2: that a similar situation happens, in which case Piastre will say, well,
- 10:46Speaker 2: hang on, now, we've got these these different understanding your fairness.
- 10:51Speaker 4: The whole concept of having team orders based around luck
- 10:54Speaker 4: is the thing that I don't necessarily like here.
- 10:56Speaker 3: Now, the penalty Piastre he.
- 10:57Speaker 4: Got at Sylvestone was very stiff, and you could argue
- 11:00Speaker 4: whether it was just or not, but it was still
- 11:02Speaker 4: an inverted Comma's mistake. He made a mistake and you
- 11:05Speaker 4: pay the price for that mistake. So let's just have
- 11:08Speaker 4: a hypothetical situation. Piastre comes in for his next PIC
- 11:11Speaker 4: first pit stop in Baku in two weeks time and
- 11:14Speaker 4: Asauber gets released in front of him in the pit
- 11:16Speaker 4: lane and it's an unsay for release and Piastre has
- 11:17Speaker 4: to check up and he loses one point seven seconds?
- 11:20Speaker 4: Is the exits of pit lane? Like on the radio
- 11:23Speaker 4: to Lando and Orlando, can you lose one point seven
- 11:26Speaker 4: seconds on your next lap? Because Oscar's been unfairly compromised
- 11:29Speaker 4: by someone else in the pits?
- 11:30Speaker 3: What are we doing here?
- 11:31Speaker 4: We're making this far too complicated, but I did want
- 11:34Speaker 4: to We could do three hours on this. Let's not
- 11:38Speaker 4: I want to get to a narrative that we're reading
- 11:41Speaker 4: a lot through comments to anything that you're writing, and
- 11:44Speaker 4: just in the general Australian sporting space this whole McClaren
- 11:48Speaker 4: wants Norris to win the title, not Piastre narrative. Let's
- 11:52Speaker 4: open more cancer worms here, because to my mind, we're
- 11:57Speaker 4: kind of asking the wrong question here. Does McClaren expressly
- 12:01Speaker 4: want this to happen?
- 12:02Speaker 3: No?
- 12:02Speaker 4: I don't think so. Is there some justification in McLaren
- 12:06Speaker 4: preferring Lando Norris to be the driver that ends its
- 12:09Speaker 4: World Championship rout? It's gone back since Lewis Hamilton. From
- 12:12Speaker 4: a business point of view, yes, because they've invested a
- 12:15Speaker 4: lot of time and a lot of money in Norris
- 12:17Speaker 4: as he's come all the way through. He's a McLaren guy,
- 12:20Speaker 4: through and through. McLaren swooped on Pastre because Alpine left
- 12:23Speaker 4: a loophole open in Pastre's contract, and when Pastre signed
- 12:27Speaker 4: with McLaren, we never thought we would be discussing a
- 12:29Speaker 4: potential World championship push within three seasons. And I go
- 12:32Speaker 4: back to this because I was right in the thick
- 12:34Speaker 4: of covering this the last time it happened. It's the
- 12:36Speaker 4: Weber vessel situation at Red Bull, and I dug out
- 12:39Speaker 4: a quote from the Brazil twenty ten press conference that
- 12:42Speaker 4: I remember really clearly. I think I wasn't supposed to
- 12:45Speaker 4: be in the hunt at all, so maybe it's been
- 12:48Speaker 4: quite inconvenient. And that's Mark Webber in the penultimate race
- 12:52Speaker 4: of twenty ten. And if you're looking at it from
- 12:53Speaker 4: McLaren's point of view, just as a return on investment,
- 12:56Speaker 4: of course, you would prefer the person you've invested all
- 12:59Speaker 4: this time, time and money and resource in to win
- 13:02Speaker 4: the World Championship against basically anybody else. But if the
- 13:06Speaker 4: outcome is to win the World championship. It makes sense
- 13:09Speaker 4: that they might prefer it to be Norris, Am I
- 13:11Speaker 4: wrong I.
- 13:13Speaker 1: Say that argument.
- 13:13Speaker 2: I was thinking similar the way that Mark would talk
- 13:16Speaker 2: about not a direct favoritism in the team, although there
- 13:20Speaker 2: were some instances of probably he probably couldn't, but talking
- 13:23Speaker 2: about an emotional preference. It has an effect on decision making.
- 13:27Speaker 2: I don't if that's there, McClaren, I don't think it's
- 13:29Speaker 2: to the magnitude was at Red Bull continues to be
- 13:33Speaker 2: in Red Bull. I don't think that that's there. I
- 13:36Speaker 2: think there is a justification for that. I think there's
- 13:38Speaker 2: also though McLaren and I can see in the decision
- 13:43Speaker 2: making this weekend the idea that by making this team order,
- 13:46Speaker 2: it actually takes everything away from the drivers and it's
- 13:48Speaker 2: all about the team. It kind of protects the brands
- 13:51Speaker 2: of both drivers.
- 13:52Speaker 3: Right.
- 13:53Speaker 2: You can't now say whatever happens at the end of
- 13:55Speaker 2: the year, if it's decided by three points or whatever,
- 13:57Speaker 2: the difference is that it had anything to do with
- 13:59Speaker 2: Piastri getting an unfair advantage because the team accidentally prioritized
- 14:03Speaker 2: him at the getting notice a slow stop, so you
- 14:05Speaker 2: can also almost see the reverse here, and this goes
- 14:08Speaker 2: back to that scrupulous lee fair approach they're taking, which
- 14:11Speaker 2: is that one of them is going to win the championship.
- 14:14Speaker 2: McLaren's going to get its first driver's champion since Lewis Hamilton's.
- 14:16Speaker 1: Correct, right.
- 14:18Speaker 2: But if the team has to absorb stress and reputational
- 14:22Speaker 2: damage but not at the expense of the drivers, maybe
- 14:25Speaker 2: that's preferable because as much as the team is the
- 14:27Speaker 2: big show, and we talk about the team's number one
- 14:30Speaker 2: in this year, when the team's going to win both titles,
- 14:32Speaker 2: the talking point is going to be the driver that
- 14:34Speaker 2: wins the title, not the fact that McLaren's won.
- 14:35Speaker 4: Another champions I agree, but sometimes the right driver doesn't
- 14:38Speaker 4: win the championship. Twenty sixteen, Nico Rosberg won the World
- 14:41Speaker 4: Championship mostly because Lewis Hamilton blew up in Malaysia and
- 14:44Speaker 4: that would have been you know, that was a stroke
- 14:46Speaker 4: of bad light in twenty ten, as much as it
- 14:48Speaker 4: was tough to take at the time for Australian fans.
- 14:50Speaker 4: So basically, invest won the World Championship, and he won
- 14:52Speaker 4: the World Championship because he went out and won the
- 14:53Speaker 4: last race. But I will quick sixty second story time here, Yes,
- 14:58Speaker 4: go I was there in Aberdabi and t and I
- 15:01Speaker 4: remember having to fight my way through the Vettel celebration
- 15:05Speaker 4: party in the Red Bull Hospitality to get to Webber.
- 15:08Speaker 4: I was the only Australian journal that spoke to Mark
- 15:10Speaker 4: that night, and there was a wake going on in
- 15:13Speaker 4: one corner of the Red Bull Hospitality unit and the
- 15:17Speaker 4: largest party of all time because it was their first
- 15:19Speaker 4: World championship in twenty ten. But the emotional investment you
- 15:22Speaker 4: talked about the whole night was trying to imagine what
- 15:26Speaker 4: that would have been like if it had been reversed.
- 15:29Speaker 4: And the older guy whose speed was inconvenient came in
- 15:33Speaker 4: and he won the championship over the guy that they'd
- 15:35Speaker 4: invested all the time and money and resource and emotion
- 15:38Speaker 4: in now different ends of their career. Obviously, Vetel turned
- 15:41Speaker 4: out to be a pretty damn good driver. Mark Webber
- 15:43Speaker 4: was a very good driver, but not a world champion.
- 15:46Speaker 4: But that comment about the inconvenient thing, I can't help.
- 15:48Speaker 4: And of course the irony of all this is pastre
- 15:50Speaker 4: is managed by Mark Webber. You know all the parallels
- 15:52Speaker 4: fifteen years on, but you can't tell me that if
- 15:55Speaker 4: McLaren had a preference as to who they would prefer
- 15:58Speaker 4: win the World Championship hand on heart, Why would you
- 16:00Speaker 4: prefer the person you've invested all this time and money,
- 16:03Speaker 4: over all these years into they're going to win the
- 16:04Speaker 4: World Championhip?
- 16:05Speaker 3: Terrific? Are we making this far more complicated than it
- 16:08Speaker 3: needs to be right now?
- 16:09Speaker 1: Yeah? It will be not would be.
- 16:11Speaker 2: Very interesting to see how it goes down after the
- 16:13Speaker 2: championship has decided one way or another. Before he heard
- 16:16Speaker 2: Zach Brown talk about the way they've asked both drivers,
- 16:19Speaker 2: how that'd like to be dealt with after Abuy Darby
- 16:21Speaker 2: giving one of them won't win it, That would be interesting.
- 16:24Speaker 2: I want to put one question to you before we
- 16:26Speaker 2: sort of wrap up the McLaren angle here, which is.
- 16:29Speaker 1: The talking Have we got two and a half more
- 16:30Speaker 1: hours on mcla We've got plenty of hour.
- 16:32Speaker 2: We've got as long as you like go back to
- 16:34Speaker 2: the audio only podcast after this is an extended edition.
- 16:37Speaker 2: There's been some things made about the fact that Piastre
- 16:40Speaker 2: very quickly acquiesced to the team order. There have been
- 16:43Speaker 2: some opinions put out there that he's not ruthless enough
- 16:46Speaker 2: for that. Asking the question whether or not an ax
- 16:49Speaker 2: with staff on or Michael Schumacher or insert great champion here, Sena.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Would have done the same that he did.
- 16:56Speaker 2: I think that that's kind of interesting because the text
- 17:00Speaker 2: of all of those drivers is very different to the
- 17:01Speaker 2: context at McLaren. Yes, do you think there's a situation
- 17:04Speaker 2: in which Oscar would have ignored that team all to
- 17:06Speaker 2: though if it was for the victory, do you think.
- 17:07Speaker 1: It would have been different?
- 17:10Speaker 4: Not necessarily, because I think that the biggest number for
- 17:14Speaker 4: me is the eight races to go in that he knows, say,
- 17:17Speaker 4: if it was for the victory, he knows that he's
- 17:19Speaker 4: winning the court of public opinion on that one, and
- 17:22Speaker 4: he would still have a championship lead, so he becomes
- 17:25Speaker 4: the winner. But if he doesn't win that race, if
- 17:27Speaker 4: that's for the victory of that particular race, So to me,
- 17:30Speaker 4: the number is not so much whether it's third to second,
- 17:33Speaker 4: second to first. How many races are there left? And
- 17:37Speaker 4: does he have the requisite ruthlessness to be able to
- 17:40Speaker 4: do what he needs to do as we get closer
- 17:42Speaker 4: to Abu Dhabi. I think if that needs to be deployed,
- 17:45Speaker 4: it will come out. I just think eight races to go,
- 17:48Speaker 4: it's a third of the season. Sorry, it's a long
- 17:53Speaker 4: time to keep things at that emotional pitch, and I
- 17:57Speaker 4: just thought the smart move. Yes, did he acquiesce a
- 17:59Speaker 4: little bit too meekly perhaps in this instance, But I
- 18:02Speaker 4: think you can't just say that without looking at the
- 18:04Speaker 4: context of how many races there are to go and
- 18:06Speaker 4: the way that Formula one operates these days. It's so
- 18:09Speaker 4: much more open that you talked about Michael Schumacher and
- 18:12Speaker 4: Maxims staff and they've never had a teammate that's been
- 18:15Speaker 4: close to them in a World championship situation, so it's
- 18:17Speaker 4: not a comparison in my mind. I just thought that
- 18:20Speaker 4: I liked the way he played it, in that he
- 18:23Speaker 4: brought himself some cards to play in the future if
- 18:26Speaker 4: he needs to, and he can do that because he's
- 18:28Speaker 4: in a position of advantage. He still has a thirty
- 18:30Speaker 4: one point championship leak.
- 18:31Speaker 2: Yeah, it's still enormous. I'm inclined to agree. I think
- 18:34Speaker 2: the Piastre is smart enough that I'm willing to believe
- 18:37Speaker 2: that in the lap or whatever amount of time he
- 18:39Speaker 2: had to make that decision, he thought it through and
- 18:42Speaker 2: decided that there was much more upside to having that
- 18:45Speaker 2: card in his pocket than having the argument with the team,
- 18:47Speaker 2: which he may have ended up losing by the end
- 18:49Speaker 2: of the day, so anyway, they may have verbally beat
- 18:51Speaker 2: him down from a position much like they did Norris
- 18:54Speaker 2: in Hungary last year.
- 18:55Speaker 3: And then what if you lose that for the remainder
- 18:56Speaker 3: of the season. That's that's the bigger play here.
- 18:58Speaker 2: And there and the greater difficulty after that if you
- 19:00Speaker 2: ignore a team order at this point. With this advantage
- 19:03Speaker 2: is that maybe the team then isn't one hundred percent
- 19:05Speaker 2: on your side in the way they were, or when
- 19:07Speaker 2: you do need you know, think about Azerbaijan last year,
- 19:09Speaker 2: where Norris did help him win the Grand Prix by
- 19:12Speaker 2: signing down Sergio Perry's Maybe that wouldn't happen and there
- 19:15Speaker 2: is precedent for that to be required considering. Something we
- 19:17Speaker 2: haven't talked about is the fact that Piastre was asked
- 19:20Speaker 2: to help Norris make it through to Q three yes
- 19:22Speaker 2: this weekend, which I think is also quietly remarkable. I
- 19:25Speaker 2: understand the team interest argument better there because it's in
- 19:30Speaker 2: the teams interest to how I guess both.
- 19:31Speaker 1: Drivers in Q three.
- 19:32Speaker 2: I kind of get that, but that is an understatedly
- 19:36Speaker 2: remarkable thing to ask a title rival to do.
- 19:39Speaker 4: Also, if you're Lando Norris and you're in a McLaren,
- 19:41Speaker 4: why don't need any help getting into Q three?
- 19:42Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure, I think that question is there so
- 19:45Speaker 2: in the unlikely event, because Piastre has been much less
- 19:48Speaker 2: of a position to require the help of his teammate
- 19:50Speaker 2: this year. But we can't say that won't be needed.
- 19:52Speaker 2: Well you left out one keyword yet, yes, exactly, And
- 19:55Speaker 2: like I say, Azbaijan last year, that was it could
- 19:57Speaker 2: happen again. It feels like a bit of a pastre.
- 20:00Speaker 2: It's gonna be really interesting to see how this plays out.
- 20:02Speaker 2: It's not really about I thought by now we'd be
- 20:04Speaker 2: talking about a flashpoint and some tension. Weirdly, it's not
- 20:07Speaker 2: about that. It's about the corner McLaren is built for
- 20:10Speaker 2: itself and then backed itself into it. That is going
- 20:13Speaker 2: to be really interesting to see how it unfolds over
- 20:16Speaker 2: the next eight races. But that was a fascinating way
- 20:19Speaker 2: to end the European season.
- 20:20Speaker 3: I thought it was soul.
- 20:21Speaker 4: We also just mention that Max for Steppen won the
- 20:23Speaker 4: Girl Prix. I said at the time, we're into it.
- 20:26Speaker 4: It's not twenty twenty three all over. It yes, it
- 20:28Speaker 4: really was that kind of race. Actually third only third
- 20:31Speaker 4: Women of the year worth reflecting ones in Italy.
- 20:33Speaker 2: Good for him, indeed, an Italian race engineer, great outcome.
- 20:36Speaker 2: Let's move on to Move of the Week, brought to
- 20:38Speaker 2: you by Shannon's two races this weekend, of course, Barcelona
- 20:45Speaker 2: Motorcycle Grand Prix as well as the Italian Formula One
- 20:47Speaker 2: Grand Prix. That's probably good because there wasn't a lot
- 20:50Speaker 2: of overtaking in Italy after the first few laps.
- 20:52Speaker 4: None that we're not team orders anyway, well, yes, which
- 20:55Speaker 4: is why for my Move of the Week I'm actually
- 20:57Speaker 4: going to nominate Alex albom here. This is a very
- 20:59Speaker 4: very strong ange left field one which is kind of
- 21:01Speaker 4: my corns. We get corners with painting ourselves into Alex
- 21:04Speaker 4: albon Seventh in the World Championship.
- 21:06Speaker 1: Yes, ahead of Antonelli.
- 21:07Speaker 3: Now, uh huh.
- 21:07Speaker 4: And when you're looking at a series where you've got
- 21:09Speaker 4: in some sort of order, McLaren, Ferrari, Mercedes and Red
- 21:12Speaker 4: Bull are clearly the four dominant teams. For anyone else
- 21:16Speaker 4: to muscle into that top eight in the World Championship
- 21:19Speaker 4: from any other team is a pretty remarkable achievement. So
- 21:23Speaker 4: he's had eleven points finishes in sixteen Grand Prix and
- 21:26Speaker 4: this is the stat that I can't believe. With Alex Albon,
- 21:29Speaker 4: he has outscored his teammate Carlos Science seventy points to sixteen. Now,
- 21:34Speaker 4: if anyone had that before the season started, then send
- 21:37Speaker 4: me your details and we'll go to have a very
- 21:39Speaker 4: very large dinner together or something. But who would have
- 21:41Speaker 4: seen that coming. But he's he's had such a good
- 21:43Speaker 4: season and it's quite start. You look at him on
- 21:46Speaker 4: the points table down and go, oh okay, yeah, that's
- 21:48Speaker 4: believable and sustainable, but it still makes you sit up.
- 21:51Speaker 1: Yeah, it is remarkable.
- 21:52Speaker 2: I mean some of that obviously was in those first
- 21:54Speaker 2: five races whatever it was, where Carlos Science was clearly
- 21:57Speaker 2: not at home with the car. But I sort of
- 21:59Speaker 2: thinking about, this is the dribe isn't here? Weirdly enough,
- 22:01Speaker 2: the Carlos signs in a great position to score points
- 22:04Speaker 2: this weekend and then, in my opinion, caused a collision
- 22:08Speaker 2: for which Oliver Abadmin was penalized. I understand why, but
- 22:11Speaker 2: I think it was wrong totally needless, like totally needless
- 22:15Speaker 2: to get himself in that position when he probably would
- 22:17Speaker 2: have finished, he would have got maybe four points.
- 22:18Speaker 1: I think more or less needed points.
- 22:21Speaker 2: I think because while it's clear, the pace is there
- 22:23Speaker 2: and he's kind of thereabouts, and like any driver that
- 22:26Speaker 2: moved this year, it's so easy to say, well, we're
- 22:28Speaker 2: here because of twenty twenty six, like you're not here
- 22:30Speaker 2: because of twenty twenty five. We're here to get our
- 22:31Speaker 2: feet under the desk. I don't know, it's starting to
- 22:34Speaker 2: get a little bit. I don't want to say too
- 22:36Speaker 2: grim for Carlos, but it's it doesn't look great.
- 22:39Speaker 4: Sixteen points and sixteen rounds. Yeah, very very average. So
- 22:42Speaker 4: that's my take on move of the weekend is a move.
- 22:44Speaker 4: It's moved into seventh place in the World Championship, but
- 22:46Speaker 4: I dare say you've probably got something for this category.
- 22:48Speaker 2: More on track, well, I really liked it was on track.
- 22:51Speaker 2: Oscar Piastri's move on Charlotte Claire. I think it was
- 22:53Speaker 2: on lap two, but there were quite a few movements
- 22:55Speaker 2: between here. Charlotte Clairs really summed it up pretty well,
- 22:58Speaker 2: like a tiny mistake and someone passes. I thought, if
- 23:00Speaker 2: that was the tone of the race, I thought were
- 23:02Speaker 2: really cracking.
- 23:03Speaker 1: One hour and twelve to twelve.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Yes, but I really like this move around the outside
- 23:07Speaker 2: of the first kne because at that point, you know,
- 23:11Speaker 2: the talk of the weekend with this, what was the
- 23:13Speaker 2: thirty four point lead, was that he didn't need to
- 23:15Speaker 2: take too many risks. You play the numbers game, you're
- 23:17Speaker 2: going to be okay. This was a really risky move.
- 23:20Speaker 2: I mean required trust in Leclaire, and Leclair is a
- 23:22Speaker 2: guy you can I can't. I'm trying to think now,
- 23:25Speaker 2: but I'm struggling to think of any major mistake he's
- 23:26Speaker 2: made in a combat situation like that. Just really gutsy
- 23:30Speaker 2: to put his car there, knowing the risk was there
- 23:32Speaker 2: that he might be eliminated and all of a sudden,
- 23:33Speaker 2: a loss of three points scenarios could be a loss
- 23:36Speaker 2: of eighteen if very fair, wouldn't it. After the Dutch
- 23:38Speaker 2: con Prix, I just really enjoyed that move. That showed
- 23:42Speaker 2: that he's still out there, really trying to go hard
- 23:44Speaker 2: at these races. There's no inclination to think about the
- 23:47Speaker 2: points lead. It is still about winning races and stamping
- 23:50Speaker 2: is authority on the series.
- 23:51Speaker 4: And the point you mentioned is knowing who you're racing against. Yes,
- 23:54Speaker 4: I think that's a big part of that. There are
- 23:56Speaker 4: certain people you would not put your car in that
- 23:58Speaker 4: particular position with, and can Mark we're a reference of
- 24:01Speaker 4: the of the podcast this week. I'm thinking a lot
- 24:03Speaker 4: so where a rouge.
- 24:04Speaker 2: Yeah, well there's no other two drivers almost that you
- 24:07Speaker 2: would you could pull that off with.
- 24:09Speaker 3: Yeah. Absolutely.
- 24:09Speaker 4: And the reason that Mark went for that where he
- 24:12Speaker 4: went for it was because of who was racing against.
- 24:14Speaker 4: A Because it's awesome if it comes off, and b
- 24:15Speaker 4: because I can trust this guy to do the right thing.
- 24:17Speaker 4: And there was a much lower scale version of that
- 24:20Speaker 4: going on.
- 24:20Speaker 3: With Piastre and Leclair.
- 24:21Speaker 4: But I like the fact that you sum up who
- 24:23Speaker 4: you're racing against and you race that person accordingly or
- 24:26Speaker 4: not based on the situation. That's why I think it's
- 24:28Speaker 4: a really good nomination.
- 24:29Speaker 2: It's worth remembering that as well. And every time a
- 24:31Speaker 2: driver says I don't know who's in the car, just
- 24:33Speaker 2: see the.
- 24:33Speaker 1: Other car, it's not true. Yes, obviously not true.
- 24:39Speaker 2: Let's move on away from form to one briefly to
- 24:41Speaker 2: interested with his experts, because we've had a murdor GP
- 24:44Speaker 2: round in which I'm interested. This weekend we'll have a
- 24:46Speaker 2: Supercars round and I'll tell you about that in the moment,
- 24:48Speaker 2: or I.
- 24:48Speaker 1: Can tell you about that.
- 24:49Speaker 4: Now you tell me, let's I'll be more interested. You
- 24:53Speaker 4: can be the expert. How do of that sound?
- 24:54Speaker 3: Okay, let's do let's do it now. All I know
- 24:56Speaker 3: this is how this is how interested I am. First
- 24:58Speaker 3: and Dura of the season at the Bend.
- 25:01Speaker 2: Yes, Bend, not at Sandown, which is unusual. Indeed Sandown
- 25:06Speaker 2: is later though, sant nag it's a final slot.
- 25:07Speaker 4: What what's the what's the because you know it's separate
- 25:11Speaker 4: season in a lot of respects. What's the narrative going
- 25:14Speaker 4: into this? Because it's unusual, as you said, to have
- 25:16Speaker 4: the first and juror at this particular track.
- 25:18Speaker 2: Yeah, this is a question I've been wondering for the
- 25:20Speaker 2: last few weeks. I was in Sydney a couple of
- 25:23Speaker 2: weeks ago last week for the Bathist launch event. You
- 25:25Speaker 2: mentioning that on our website on social media. The more
- 25:28Speaker 2: stuff from that later anyway, and it struck me because
- 25:31Speaker 2: I really like the Bathists is the ideas of standalone.
- 25:34Speaker 2: It didn't used to be part of the championship was
- 25:35Speaker 2: a race in which you just go all out and
- 25:38Speaker 2: an iconic event still is an iconic event, but it
- 25:40Speaker 2: plays a role in the championship and in previous years
- 25:42Speaker 2: before the final series, you know, it was important to
- 25:45Speaker 2: the narrative of the champions You've ever scored the most
- 25:47Speaker 2: points potentially affect the order. It still does that to
- 25:49Speaker 2: an extent because there are the bonus points for the finals,
- 25:53Speaker 2: but it's much more standalone now. If you're Brock Feenie
- 25:56Speaker 2: or Will Brown or even all the way down bro
- 25:58Speaker 2: Brodie Caustick and even lower, it's kind of a bit
- 26:01Speaker 2: of a free hit. I know this is two rounds
- 26:03Speaker 2: away from the bend, but stick stick with me. I
- 26:06Speaker 2: put this to a couple of drivers and I said, yes,
- 26:08Speaker 2: except if you were on the bubble for the finals.
- 26:11Speaker 2: Oh yeah, because all of a sudden you've got these
- 26:13Speaker 2: two big points paying races, three hundred points, all the
- 26:16Speaker 2: points in one event. That's a lot of risk for
- 26:19Speaker 2: guys who are on the bubble for the finals. So
- 26:21Speaker 2: we'll get I've got the points down here, so I'll
- 26:23Speaker 2: get them wrong. And the points there's a lot of
- 26:24Speaker 2: big numbers and supercars. Anton Divisquali is seventh. He's one
- 26:28Speaker 2: hundred and four points ahead of tenth place, which is
- 26:30Speaker 2: held by Thomas round right.
- 26:31Speaker 1: Andre Humgud has only twenty one points ahead. In eighth.
- 26:35Speaker 1: Ryan Wood's only fourteen points ahead. Just out of here.
- 26:38Speaker 1: This is a story.
- 26:38Speaker 2: I mean, we fascinately see how this ends up by
- 26:40Speaker 2: the end of the season or by the finals. I
- 26:41Speaker 2: guess Kay Allen eleventh, only twenty points out because of
- 26:44Speaker 2: this late surge in the last couple of rounds. I
- 26:48Speaker 2: suppose after starting as a rookie, and then Cameron Hill,
- 26:51Speaker 2: who was in the ten earlier in the year, has
- 26:53Speaker 2: had a bit of a rough time of things. In
- 26:55Speaker 2: the last again two or three rounds, He's one hundred
- 26:57Speaker 2: and eight points out.
- 26:58Speaker 1: Obviously there are more drivers involved, but for me.
- 27:01Speaker 2: I could be totally wrong, which would be remarkable, not
- 27:03Speaker 2: because I'd be wrong, but because it'd be a great story.
- 27:05Speaker 2: One hundred points either side fields like you'd need a
- 27:09Speaker 2: pretty big twist, because the other thing is, it's not
- 27:11Speaker 2: as if you not all of these drivers are going
- 27:13Speaker 2: to DNF and then cameraon's calling me in the end
- 27:15Speaker 2: of the band.
- 27:16Speaker 1: Yeah, chances are most of them will score points.
- 27:19Speaker 2: I think that's really interesting for them because this is
- 27:22Speaker 2: the total opposite now of the Bend and Baptist of
- 27:25Speaker 2: a free hit. You've really got to play the points
- 27:28Speaker 2: in a way you haven't in the endurers before, because
- 27:30Speaker 2: if you were tenth last year, you're not gonna win
- 27:33Speaker 2: the championship.
- 27:34Speaker 1: You just go and try and win it.
- 27:36Speaker 2: You're gonna still try and win it now, but now
- 27:37Speaker 2: you're going to be super aware where these other drivers are.
- 27:39Speaker 1: And I think that's a.
- 27:40Speaker 2: Really interesting and maybe understated so far twist in the injury.
- 27:44Speaker 4: Season well, and where these particular drivers sit in the
- 27:47Speaker 4: order of the race. You'll need to have eyes on
- 27:48Speaker 4: two different parts of the timing tower here, because you
- 27:50Speaker 4: might not necessarily be watching a guy competing in the
- 27:52Speaker 4: top four, but hang on, this guy's eighth in this race,
- 27:55Speaker 4: what does that mean relative to the guys he's racing?
- 27:57Speaker 3: And I do like it.
- 27:58Speaker 1: Yes, there's a real duel element to the in duros
- 28:01Speaker 1: this year.
- 28:01Speaker 2: One is that we're just going to find out who's
- 28:03Speaker 2: going to win the first bend and duro and then
- 28:04Speaker 2: of course the bathest one thousand. The second element is
- 28:07Speaker 2: obviously who's going to win the finals how they do it.
- 28:09Speaker 2: I hope we've invested in a live sub championship leader board,
- 28:13Speaker 2: tenth place leader board, but it'll be very interested to say.
- 28:16Speaker 2: So that's something to keep an eye. Had to bend
- 28:17Speaker 2: this weekend, the first the curtain raiser of Bathos stuff. Yes,
- 28:21Speaker 2: tell me a little bit about Barcelona, because I believe
- 28:24Speaker 2: I say deliberately A Marquez.
- 28:25Speaker 4: Won a Marquees. Yes, A Marquez did win the race.
- 28:30Speaker 4: This is a funny one in that you know, Mark
- 28:32Speaker 4: Marquez came into this weekend on a fourteen race winning streak,
- 28:35Speaker 4: which sounds as silly as it is, but going to
- 28:37Speaker 4: a track where it's not a great circuit for Mark,
- 28:41Speaker 4: the circuit of Barcelona Catalonia, which sounds ridiculous, and he
- 28:44Speaker 4: has one here the only two times he's won this
- 28:47Speaker 4: Grand Prix twenty fourteen, when he won the first ten
- 28:49Speaker 4: races of the season twenty nineteen where he finished every
- 28:51Speaker 4: race bar one in first or second. So it's been
- 28:53Speaker 4: absolutely top shelf. Market's one here. It's a motor GP
- 28:58Speaker 4: track and he's on the best bike in the field.
- 29:00Speaker 4: But it's the configuration of this particular circuit. We know
- 29:03Speaker 4: Mark's got this supernatural ability in left handers. This track
- 29:06Speaker 4: only has two more right handers than left handers. But
- 29:08Speaker 4: it's the configuration of the right handers. They're big, long
- 29:12Speaker 4: radius right hand corners and it's where they are in
- 29:15Speaker 4: the lap, and so Alex Marquez is particularly good through
- 29:19Speaker 4: high speed, long radius, right handed turn. It's almost a
- 29:21Speaker 4: perfect track this in Malaysia. He's two really strong tracks
- 29:24Speaker 4: for that reason. And as good as Mark is, he
- 29:28Speaker 4: wasn't fantastic at this track even before he had four
- 29:30Speaker 4: shoulder surgeries from twenty twenty onwards, so it actually has
- 29:34Speaker 4: been a bit of a weak point. So to my mind,
- 29:36Speaker 4: they were kind of both winners here on the weekend
- 29:38Speaker 4: because Alex Marquez, after he chucked it in the sprint,
- 29:40Speaker 4: which is one of the silliest mistakes we've seen for
- 29:42Speaker 4: a very long while, Mark ended up winning that race
- 29:45Speaker 4: to win fifteen straight races. But the way this Grand
- 29:47Speaker 4: Prix built on Sunday you had Alex and Mark were
- 29:51Speaker 4: just in a totally different league. Everyone else was a
- 29:53Speaker 4: million miles behind. And if you're Alex Marquez after you've
- 29:57Speaker 4: thrown it down the road and the sprint from victory
- 30:00Speaker 4: previous day, and you've got a guy on a fifteen
- 30:02Speaker 4: race winning street sitting within two to six tenths of
- 30:05Speaker 4: a second for sixteen consecutive laps. That's a lot of
- 30:09Speaker 4: pressure to soca. And also you can almost know your
- 30:11Speaker 4: enemy too well in that because they're brothers and they
- 30:14Speaker 4: know each other's strengths and weaknesses so well. That's a
- 30:17Speaker 4: different feeling for Alex marquistern I've got this guy behind me.
- 30:20Speaker 4: It's not just some random opponent who you may not
- 30:23Speaker 4: know that well and therefore probably take some of the
- 30:25Speaker 4: stress out of being pursued by Mark Marquez. So tremendous
- 30:29Speaker 4: win for him, really just really coolly executed. It's a
- 30:32Speaker 4: really tactical race Barcelona because it's a super low grip track,
- 30:36Speaker 4: it's really hot, and it comes down to the point
- 30:39Speaker 4: that you're not going to have twenty four laps of
- 30:41Speaker 4: thire life. You've probably got about eighteen good laps. It's
- 30:43Speaker 4: just when do you deploy them, and so it turns
- 30:45Speaker 4: into this really canny strategy based race, which we don't
- 30:49Speaker 4: often see in motor GDP because they're forty minute races.
- 30:52Speaker 4: It's always a different feel there. But the fact that
- 30:54Speaker 4: Mark Marquez hung that close to his brother's very very
- 30:58Speaker 4: good at this circuit with its configuration. Mark didn't win,
- 31:01Speaker 4: but it's an expects thing right, and I guess the
- 31:04Speaker 4: interesting part about all of this now is that it
- 31:06Speaker 4: has taken away the chance for Mark Marquees to win
- 31:08Speaker 4: this seventh Motor GP World Championship at Masano this weekend.
- 31:12Speaker 4: There was a part of me that was kind of
- 31:13Speaker 4: hoping it might happen in Valentido Rossi's backyard, just for
- 31:16Speaker 4: the narrative of the storyline, but it looks very likely
- 31:19Speaker 4: that it's now going to be decided in Japan, which
- 31:22Speaker 4: given it was three years ago that Mark told Honda
- 31:25Speaker 4: in Japan that he was leaving them to go to
- 31:27Speaker 4: Ducati to kick start this second part of his career,
- 31:31Speaker 4: it quite neatly closes the circle. So if that ends
- 31:33Speaker 4: up becoming the story, then great. But it was just
- 31:35Speaker 4: a really interesting tactical race between two guys at the
- 31:39Speaker 4: absolute top of their game and a Abastianini I think
- 31:41Speaker 4: finished six seconds off the in third place and no
- 31:45Speaker 4: one else was within ten seconds. You do not see
- 31:47Speaker 4: that in modern day motor GP.
- 31:48Speaker 3: They were an absolute class of their own. It was very,
- 31:51Speaker 3: very tense, high quality racing.
- 31:53Speaker 2: The part of you that wanted the championship three one
- 31:55Speaker 2: in San Reno is not the part that has to
- 31:57Speaker 2: read the social media coments.
- 31:58Speaker 1: I'm guessing so yeah, that part.
- 32:01Speaker 2: Absolutely not enjoyed the race, enjoyed Alex Baker's rolling through
- 32:04Speaker 2: the gravel afterwards. I felt very random to me when
- 32:08Speaker 2: I enjoyed it and then. But it was the brotherly
- 32:11Speaker 2: element to this, which is obviously not very rare in
- 32:14Speaker 2: any sport, but certainly even in Motor GP until this year.
- 32:17Speaker 4: Well, this is crazy, right, So we were talking about
- 32:19Speaker 4: this off air before until Mark and Alex were on
- 32:21Speaker 4: the podium together in Germany last year. That was the
- 32:23Speaker 4: first time in since nineteen ninety seven we'd had siblings
- 32:27Speaker 4: on the same Motor GP podium. If you add the
- 32:29Speaker 4: sprints in the Grand Prix this year, seventeen podiums have
- 32:32Speaker 4: shared this year. Now the scoreline is Mark fifteen Alex two,
- 32:36Speaker 4: which you could probably imagine, but imagine, you know, two
- 32:40Speaker 4: brothers at the absolute peak of their power sharing podiums
- 32:43Speaker 4: in the elite level of their particular motorsport sort of.
- 32:47Speaker 4: I was listening to Matt Oxley's podcast, which is one
- 32:49Speaker 4: you should absolute listen.
- 32:50Speaker 3: To and everyone else would listen to as well.
- 32:52Speaker 4: He was talking about siblings being at the absolute top
- 32:54Speaker 4: of their game, in worldwide sports, and he was talking
- 32:56Speaker 4: about Sun and Venus Williams, and it's hard to think
- 32:59Speaker 4: of too many others other than that. This is what
- 33:01Speaker 4: these two guys are doing this year. It's been pretty
- 33:03Speaker 4: amazing to watch.
- 33:04Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a special moment Marquez era. We're certainly in yes,
- 33:08Speaker 2: and great for Alex Well, like you wouldn't have thought
- 33:10Speaker 2: he'd be in the position. Okay, drifted way off the
- 33:12Speaker 2: championship leaving sure compared to he was at the start,
- 33:14Speaker 2: but that's that's a great story to see his rise
- 33:18Speaker 2: in Moto GP as well.
- 33:19Speaker 4: Well. Also, you know a guy, by the time you
- 33:21Speaker 4: get to your sixth Moto GP season, your career arc
- 33:24Speaker 4: is kind of written.
- 33:25Speaker 3: At that point. We kind of know who you are.
- 33:26Speaker 4: He's twenty nine years old now, so guys don't normally
- 33:30Speaker 4: have career best seasons this late into their career, and
- 33:33Speaker 4: so he's done wonders for his own reputation and how
- 33:36Speaker 4: we see him as a writer. It's just that the
- 33:38Speaker 4: guy shared a bedroom with back in the days, but.
- 33:40Speaker 3: Just a bit better.
- 33:41Speaker 2: It's unfortunately him interesting round in motorsport. Also this week
- 33:46Speaker 2: will be fascinating to see the bend. But we can't
- 33:48Speaker 2: wrap up before visiting the crystal ball for complete home filtration. No,
- 33:54Speaker 2: but I only know this because it's still in down
- 33:55Speaker 2: my run set. I've predicted Ferrari victory in Wonza last week.
- 33:58Speaker 2: He tells you about the caliber of the crystal on
- 34:01Speaker 2: this show, but why don't you.
- 34:02Speaker 4: I predicted a Prelia would win in Catalunya, and well
- 34:06Speaker 4: Marc Overzeki didn't score points. How well that went my
- 34:09Speaker 4: crystal ball. And this goes back to the guy who
- 34:12Speaker 4: won the Italian Grand Prix, Max for Stappen eighty seconds
- 34:16Speaker 4: behind Max for Stappan was the guy in the other
- 34:18Speaker 4: red ball in Yuki Sonoda. We did not talk about, No,
- 34:22Speaker 4: and would have no reason to talk about except for
- 34:24Speaker 4: the fact that are we sure he's going to be
- 34:26Speaker 4: in this car for the rest of the year.
- 34:28Speaker 1: I don't think red bulls are about that.
- 34:29Speaker 4: Yeah, So my crystal ball has Isaac Cajar in that
- 34:32Speaker 4: car before the season's out, simply because you look at
- 34:37Speaker 4: last year. They kept Sergio Peris in that car for
- 34:40Speaker 4: the entire year, and he was cooked a long way
- 34:42Speaker 4: before the season finished, and they just rode it out
- 34:45Speaker 4: and then sacked him after the season. After they'd signed him,
- 34:47Speaker 4: and then look at the chaos that caused at the
- 34:49Speaker 4: beginning of this season. Liam Lawson's in all two races
- 34:52Speaker 4: in one week into the season. Liam Lawson's out let's
- 34:55Speaker 4: promote Uki sonoda, we didn't really want him in the
- 34:57Speaker 4: first place. We'll put in the car. It hasn't wor
- 35:00Speaker 4: wor so at this point. Why would you then, if
- 35:03Speaker 4: you're going to make the change for twenty twenty six,
- 35:05Speaker 4: which let's be honest, they probably are going to make
- 35:07Speaker 4: the change, why would you not just do it now?
- 35:10Speaker 4: Take some of the sting out of the start of
- 35:11Speaker 4: next year. There's going to be enough going on in
- 35:13Speaker 4: Formula One generally and for that team specifically at the
- 35:16Speaker 4: start of next year, new powertrains, everything else going on
- 35:19Speaker 4: for twenty twenty six.
- 35:20Speaker 3: Why not just bring him in.
- 35:21Speaker 4: You're not going to lose fourth place in the World
- 35:23Speaker 4: Championship for the constructors, that's where you're going to be.
- 35:26Speaker 4: Why not just bring him in for the last three
- 35:27Speaker 4: or four rounds, Just get it done, get him in there,
- 35:30Speaker 4: get his feet under the table, or you're just going
- 35:32Speaker 4: to make the same mistake as you did at the
- 35:34Speaker 4: beginning of this year. And then we live this entire
- 35:36Speaker 4: narrative all over again. I can actually see Isaacadja in
- 35:40Speaker 4: the second Red Bull by the end of the season,
- 35:42Speaker 4: and it'll be something that Helmut Marco just decides to
- 35:45Speaker 4: mention in some random press opportunity that he's not supposed
- 35:47Speaker 4: to be doing with Austrian TV because he's not actually
- 35:50Speaker 4: a team spokesperson. But that would be very fitting with
- 35:53Speaker 4: the way this season has gone. I like it.
- 35:55Speaker 2: I hesitate to use the phrase duty of care Horna
- 36:00Speaker 2: did in that press release Sackingly and Lawson from the team,
- 36:03Speaker 2: but I do wonder whether you would because normally I
- 36:07Speaker 2: would agree and say why not just start now?
- 36:09Speaker 1: But with new rules next year, with this car killing
- 36:12Speaker 1: so many careers?
- 36:14Speaker 2: Yes, is it in Hadja's best interest to not finish
- 36:17Speaker 2: the season to the team where he's got this beautiful
- 36:19Speaker 2: trajectory as a rookie and then switch next year when
- 36:22Speaker 2: we have forget how many days it is, but it's
- 36:24Speaker 2: three or four pre season tests. Yes, like a lot
- 36:26Speaker 2: of time in the car. I'mlike this year we had
- 36:28Speaker 2: three one and a half days per driver. Next year
- 36:30Speaker 2: can have a lot of days. I actually see the
- 36:33Speaker 2: cost benefit equation a little bit less to doing that.
- 36:36Speaker 2: But on the other hand, you used to know he's
- 36:37Speaker 2: scored seven point No, it's more than how ten points?
- 36:39Speaker 4: Is it?
- 36:39Speaker 1: Red Bull Racing, Yep, it's not great, but I like it.
- 36:44Speaker 4: I mean, look, it's a little left field for a
- 36:46Speaker 4: crystal ball, but given the way Red Bull's gone this year,
- 36:48Speaker 4: perhaps not so left field.
- 36:49Speaker 1: No, I think the most.
- 36:51Speaker 2: I do think though the practicing predicted that Halma Marker
- 36:53Speaker 2: will announce it ly too. Is it climb as a
- 36:56Speaker 2: tool in Austria, that's one. I think that's probably a
- 36:59Speaker 2: guaranteed to.
- 37:00Speaker 4: Get on Hell announced something, Yeah, yes, something will be announced.
- 37:05Speaker 2: We're going a bit of a different direction. And dre
- 37:07Speaker 2: Kim Antonelli had another what I thought was interesting. Total
- 37:10Speaker 2: Wolf describes I think his word was Underwhelmingham Race. First
- 37:13Speaker 2: criticism from total Wolf, he said, he tried to say
- 37:16Speaker 2: it wasn't a criticism, but it was critical. We're at
- 37:19Speaker 2: the end of the European season, the European season which
- 37:22Speaker 2: we assumed we'd see the best of.
- 37:23Speaker 1: Him because of the tracks he knows well.
- 37:25Speaker 2: Instead, I think he scored about ten points, maybe maybe
- 37:28Speaker 2: even actually fewer. Canada the exception punctuates the European season,
- 37:32Speaker 2: he guys made and podium there.
- 37:35Speaker 1: Leaving Europe.
- 37:35Speaker 2: I think we're now going to see the best of
- 37:37Speaker 2: Antonelle tracks. It just seems like tracks he doesn't know.
- 37:40Speaker 2: The pressure equation in his mind changes a little bit. Ye,
- 37:44Speaker 2: so I think we're going to see him. I'm just
- 37:45Speaker 2: going to say he's going to out qualify and outrace
- 37:47Speaker 2: George Russell in Azerbaijan. Not so he's going to be
- 37:50Speaker 2: on the podium anything, But I think we're actually going
- 37:52Speaker 2: to see all that early season promise again at the
- 37:55Speaker 2: end of the season, now that we're on tracks that
- 37:57Speaker 2: he has no right to perform.
- 37:58Speaker 4: At well, the less less I should environment. I think
- 38:01Speaker 4: it's a really good point because what did everyone talk
- 38:02Speaker 4: about at Monza this weekend. Oh, this is where he
- 38:04Speaker 4: threw it off at polic his first free practice last year.
- 38:08Speaker 4: We kept going back to that. So perhaps a clean
- 38:10Speaker 4: slate and less expectations. He's still a kid. Let's be
- 38:13Speaker 4: perfectly honest here, and yeah, perhaps the human element of
- 38:16Speaker 4: all this might actually come into play. I don't mind it.
- 38:18Speaker 4: I think that's got more of a chance to be
- 38:20Speaker 4: correct than most of your crystal boss. Let's be honest
- 38:22Speaker 4: doesn't say a lot, No, it doesn't.
- 38:24Speaker 1: That's all the time we have for pit Talk.

- 38:42Speaker 2: ten pm on Sunday as well. You get up today
