- 0:39people? You're going to be embarrassed.
- 0:41You're not going to know what to say.
- 0:43Well, you know what? I've been there and I've been
- 0:46there more than once. And if you're nodding along,
- 0:48trust me, you're not alone. And today I'm going to share
- 0:51with you and how I got my confidence back in these social
- 0:54situations. Hey, I'm Bryce and this is
- 0:57living with Parkinson's, the good, the bad and the reality.
- 1:00And if you're new, welcome. This channel is a safe space for
- 1:03real, raw and sometimes the hilarious truth about
- 1:06Parkinson's. So if you've ever felt your
- 1:09confidence take a hit because your symptoms, you're in good
- 1:12company. Why don't you hit subscribe and
- 1:14Share your story below in the comments.
- 1:16What's one thing that's that's challenged your confidence the
- 1:19most since your diagnosis? Now let's be real, Parkinson's
- 1:24can do a number on your self esteem.
- 1:26Symptoms flare up at the worst moments, you get embarrassed and
- 1:30maybe you start avoiding people or places that you love.
- 1:33And the more you isolate, the harder it gets to bounce back.
- 1:37It's a complete spiral. For me it was the fear of
- 1:40freezing in public. That was one of my big things,
- 1:42right? Or my voice dropping out mid
- 1:44sentence. I started cancelling plans, and
- 1:46not because I didn't want to go, but because I didn't trust my
- 1:49own body. But it wasn't just the big
- 1:52events, even small everyday things like running into
- 1:56somebody at the grocery store and worrying, like, you know,
- 2:00will I be able to get the words out?
- 2:01Or what if my hand shakes when I reach, you know, for my wallet?
- 2:07That all can chip away at your confidence over time.
- 2:10And I get it. And let's be honest, Parkinson's
- 2:13loves to remind you who's boss in the moment, in the most
- 2:16inconvenient moments, doesn't it?
- 2:19And the most inconvenient places, too.
- 2:21Everyone's stuck in a bathroom stall, fumbling with the lock
- 2:24and suddenly feeling like the world's closing in.
- 2:26Well, that's enough to make anyone think twice about leaving
- 2:30home. So I get it.
- 2:32And I want to hear from you. What everyday moments have
- 2:34challenged you, your confidence the most.
- 2:37I read every comment, put it in the comments.
- 2:38And you know what? Sharing your comment might just
- 2:40spur on somebody and help somebody else.
- 2:42So this is not just a podcast. This is a community.
- 2:45So get involved, please. It'll help you and it'll help
- 2:48somebody else. But there's something about
- 2:51losing confidence that goes beyond the surface.
- 2:54It's not just about what others see, it's about how you start
- 2:57seeing yourself now. I used to take pride in being
- 3:01the go to guy right at work and at home, the one who never
- 3:05hesitated, who always showed up. But after Parkinson's, I started
- 3:09to doubt myself. Can I do this?
- 3:12You know, should I even try? You start second guessing every
- 3:16decision, and soon it feels like you're losing the parts of
- 3:19yourself that you always relied on.
- 3:25If you've ever felt like Parkinson's is stealing your
- 3:27identity along with your confidence, you're not alone in
- 3:30this at all. I'm still learning that it's OK
- 3:33to grieve those changes and that it's possible to rebuild new
- 3:36strengths and and you can rebuild those new strengths even
- 3:41when the old ones slip away. How about this?
- 3:44What's one part of your old self you miss?
- 3:48And how have you tried to get it back or create something new?
- 3:54Have you thought of that often? And sometimes we don't like
- 3:56thinking about those things because, you know, makes us feel
- 4:00bad or, you know, you don't want to drag it out.
- 4:01But think about that. What is think about?
- 4:04What is one part of your old self that you really miss?
- 4:08Have you tried to bring it back or have you tried to create
- 4:11something new? That would be interesting to
- 4:12think about, wouldn't it? Because here's the thing, I've
- 4:15also had moments where out of nowhere, my confidence made a
- 4:18comeback. Like the first time I went out
- 4:20for coffee alone again, even though I was scared.
- 4:23Or when I made it through a full day of work and I realized, hey,
- 4:26you know what? I'm still me.
- 4:28Parkinson's didn't win today. One of my favourites was when I
- 4:33say when I said yes to a last minute invite with friends, even
- 4:36though I'm worried about my symptoms showing up.
- 4:38And sure enough, I did freeze up once.
- 4:41But you know what? Nobody really freaked out,
- 4:44right? And I got through it, and I even
- 4:45laughed about it with them later.
- 4:48See, the thing about getting your confidence back, it's never
- 4:51all at once. It's a bunch of little
- 4:52victories. And overtime, those small wins
- 4:56start to add up. So if you're sitting here
- 4:59waiting for this moment where everything's going to change and
- 5:03you're just going to feel this burst of confidence and you're
- 5:05not going to worry about your symptoms, and I'm not going to
- 5:07care what people think and I'm not going to pair what they say.
- 5:09I'm just going to go out and do it.
- 5:11You're waiting for this big moment.
- 5:13It doesn't happen like that. You're going to be waiting a
- 5:15long time. It's going to take a lot of
- 5:18these little victories, right? And the little victories pile
- 5:22onto each other and become start to boost up your confidence.
- 5:25And that's when your mind starts to change.
- 5:27And it's those little tiny victories, those little small
- 5:30wins, like me going for coffee alone.
- 5:32Big deal, right? But I did it and I got through
- 5:36it. And so the next time that I'm
- 5:38something's coming up that I know I want to avoid that I want
- 5:41my first, my first thing is I just, I'm not going to go there.
- 5:43I don't, I want to avoid it. I want, I don't want to be
- 5:45there. I don't want anything to do with
- 5:46it. I remind myself, OK, why am I
- 5:48thinking that way? Is it that I really don't want
- 5:50to do it? Or am I just afraid?
- 5:52Am I scared? Am I nervous?
- 5:54Am I overthinking the situation? Right?
- 5:58That's a big one, overthinking it.
- 5:59Well, I start to remind myself of these small little victories.
- 6:03Bryce, remember you went to the coffee stop coffee shop by
- 6:06yourself and it was OK. You did it.
- 6:08You're still here, you made it, you survived, right?
- 6:11So again, it's never, ever, ever all at once.
- 6:15It's overtime, small victories, small victories, they start to
- 6:19add up. So do this think back, what's 1
- 6:22moment where you surprised yourself?
- 6:24And it doesn't have to be lately, it could be anytime.
- 6:26But what's that one moment that you've surprised yourself?
- 6:30Even something tiny, you know what?
- 6:32Share in the comments so others can find hope too.
- 6:34And there's something about writing it down, just kind of
- 6:36throwing it out into the public, like, hey, this is what
- 6:39happened. This is what they did.
- 6:40It kind of makes it more real, right?
- 6:42And if you've had a win, no matter how small, share that in
- 6:45the comments. And if you're still working on
- 6:47it, hit subscribe. Because we're all building
- 6:50confidence together, one step at a time.
- 6:53And if you're in a rough patch right now, that's OK.
- 6:56Sometimes just listening to someone else's story is the
- 7:00first step. So make sure you go through the
- 7:02comments and see what others are dealing with or what they've
- 7:05done and you can build some confidence in that or you know,
- 7:08going to get that going with yourself.
- 7:11So how do we get the confidence back when Parkinson's tries to
- 7:14steal it? Well, here's what's helped me,
- 7:16OK, Number one is I had to lower the bar for success.
- 7:20And sometimes just showing up is enough.
- 7:23And that was my bar. You know, my originally my bar
- 7:26was up here like, oh. I'm going to go there and I'm
- 7:28going to meet new friends and I'm going to talk and
- 7:29everybody's going to love me and everybody's going to like.
- 7:31Me, and they're going to laugh at my jokes, right?
- 7:33And I'm like, and if that didn't happen, it wasn't a success.
- 7:37I lowered my bar. Now my success is going right.
- 7:41And if I go, I won, I showed up, and that's enough.
- 7:45Then you have to start focusing #2 if you're focusing on what
- 7:47you can control, right, you can't control every symptom.
- 7:51You just can't. But you can control how you
- 7:54respond, right? Either you make a joke about it,
- 7:57whether you kind of pass it off or whether you just move on,
- 8:00right? You can respond.
- 8:01You can choose how you respond, right?
- 8:04If you just want to, you know, run away and and put your head
- 8:08in the sand, that's a response. OK?
- 8:10So just choose how you can respond.
- 8:12Third thing to do is you have to let people in, right?
- 8:14I find the more honest I'm with my friends and my family, the
- 8:18less alone I feel, you know, be honest about your, your fears.
- 8:23Be honest about what, why you don't want to go on a vacation
- 8:26because this might happen. Be honest with, you know, with
- 8:29your friends, people at work, like I'm, you know, I, I want to
- 8:31do this, but I'm just, here's what I'm afraid of.
- 8:35And sometimes when you open that door to that, when it happens,
- 8:37or if it does happen, they're, they're like more supportive.
- 8:43Excuse me, they're, they're in it for you.
- 8:44Like they want to be there for you and they're ready for it.
- 8:48And then here's a big one. You need to celebrate those
- 8:51wins, big or small. Seriously, how about this?
- 8:54If you make it to the end of this video, that's a win.
- 8:57I know some of you, some of you might have been sitting there
- 8:59going like, OK, you know what? Oh, I'm trying to watch this
- 9:02video or I'm trying to listen to this podcast and you know, I'm
- 9:05starting to get the shakes. I better go take my medication.
- 9:07I better lay down. I better do this.
- 9:09Just try, just try because maybe you're making up excuses to get
- 9:11through it, right? So that count that as a win.
- 9:14I made it. And the next time that you're
- 9:17and you're watching this incredible podcast with this
- 9:19incredible guy, which is a big joke and you're like, you know
- 9:25what? I'll catch him later.
- 9:27Remind yourself, hey, I did it last time.
- 9:28I'll do it again. And it was worth it.
- 9:30And I got something out of it. And here's a few more.
- 9:34Here's a few that I'm working on.
- 9:35There's, there's some new, new twist here.
- 9:37Here's what I'm working on. Talk to yourself like you would
- 9:40have friend. What?
- 9:42Yeah, talk to yourself like you would have friend.
- 9:44I used to beat myself up for needing help, and now I just try
- 9:47to remember that I'd never judge a friend for the same thing.
- 9:51Think about it. If a friend told you that what
- 9:54he what they were going through, would you judge them?
- 9:58No, you wouldn't. So start talking to yourself.
- 10:02Try it. And how about this?
- 10:04I'm. I'm visualizing the worst case
- 10:06scenario. Sometimes just thinking through
- 10:09what actually what actually would happen if my symptoms act
- 10:14up, it makes it less scary. Most of the time, it's not as
- 10:18bad as the imagination itself. And it's telling me like, think
- 10:21about it, You're imagining this awful scenario where everybody's
- 10:24staring at you and you're embarrassed and you can't move
- 10:26and things are happening and all heck's breaking loose, right?
- 10:30And is that really the reality of what would happen?
- 10:33Just really, really walk that through in your head.
- 10:35It's not as bad as we make it be, right?
- 10:38It's that fear. That fear is trying to hold us
- 10:40into that. What's your confidence boost?
- 10:44What is your go to? Do you have a go to confidence
- 10:45boost? And any tips for staying
- 10:47positive when things get tough? I want to hear about those ideas
- 10:50and maybe even try them myself. So throw those in the comments
- 10:52as well. I'd really like to start a
- 10:54conversation about this. And here's a challenge.
- 10:56I have a challenge for you this week, this week, right?
- 11:00I want you to pick one small thing that scares you and I want
- 11:04you to do it scares you or you're nervous about it or you
- 11:07don't want to do it or you know, you're calling it in, right?
- 11:11You know, maybe, maybe it's calling a friend, maybe it's
- 11:13texting somebody back. Maybe it's going for a walk or
- 11:15maybe it's just, you know, sharing your story in the
- 11:17comments. Let's push back together.
- 11:21And if you're comfortable, let's try something brand new.
- 11:25Share a confidence buddy moment below.
- 11:27Someone who's encouraged you or someone you've encouraged and
- 11:31let's build each other up. Someone in the community, even
- 11:33it says, you know, you've got encouragement from their
- 11:35comments. Wouldn't that be interesting if
- 11:37you've are a one of our my, you know, regular audience and
- 11:40there's a lot of you out there and you read the comments and
- 11:43maybe there's a certain comment that really resonated with you
- 11:45that came from somebody. Maybe call that out in these
- 11:48comments, right? And that would give the other
- 11:50person confidence in what they were doing.
- 11:52Think about it. That's how a community works,
- 11:54right? We, we, we lift each other up,
- 11:57right? You lift somebody up, someone
- 11:59else lifts you up and it just goes hand in hand.
- 12:01And here's, I know this is you love these, but here's today's
- 12:04braces, OK? With, with Parkinson's,
- 12:09confidence isn't about being scared.
- 12:11It's about showing up anyway, even when your hands are
- 12:14shaking. We're in this together, friends.
- 12:18And even if your hands shake, your voice cracks or you've had
- 12:21a bad day, you're part of a community that gets it.
- 12:25So if you found something helpful, please subscribe for
- 12:27more honest stories and community sport and community
- 12:30sport. It's incredible.
- 12:32This is an actual movement. It's a community.
