- 0:01Speaker 1: You're listening to Hawk Talk with former Seahawks wide receiver
- 0:04Speaker 1: Michael Bumpus.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Play fake, go to roll right, dumps it off from
- 0:07Speaker 2: the right, plass to Michael Bumpers, who bounces off of
- 0:09Speaker 2: one tackler, catch him side the forty down of the
- 0:12Speaker 2: thirty five yard line.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Powered by Seahawks dot Com.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Matt pumpfake's looking to the gold line. He throws it
- 0:17Speaker 2: into the en zone.
- 0:18Speaker 3: Touchdown.
- 0:19Speaker 4: Say Hawks, it's Michael Bumpas with a diving.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Catching the end zone.
- 0:23Speaker 3: A ten yard.
- 0:24Speaker 4: Touchdown reception for Bumpus, and the kid out of Washington
- 0:28Speaker 4: State has found himself a place on this team.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Now, here's your host, Nasa Chobee.
- 0:34Speaker 3: What's going on? Welcome to another edition of Hawk Talk,
- 0:37Speaker 3: this time talking about a Seahawks twenty six to twenty
- 0:40Speaker 3: victory over the Denver Broncos at Lumen Field. And it
- 0:44Speaker 3: was an electric atmosphere at the stadium, the beginning of
- 0:47Speaker 3: the Mike McDonald era. So so excited I got to
- 0:49Speaker 3: be there and experience that with you guys. Sorry, we
- 0:52Speaker 3: are daylight on. The podcast had a couple of technical difficulties,
- 0:55Speaker 3: a couple other things that happened. Michael Bumpus will not
- 0:58Speaker 3: be able to join us today. But that's okay, I
- 1:00Speaker 3: got you covered reacting to all the big things that
- 1:03Speaker 3: we saw in the Seahawks Week one victory over the
- 1:05Speaker 3: Denver Broncos. So let's get things started with what had happened.
- 1:09Speaker 3: See what happened at first?
- 1:10Speaker 1: What had happened was unhawked talk.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Well, as I mentioned to Mike McDonald, era is underway,
- 1:19Speaker 3: starting with a huge win. As I mentioned, but boy
- 1:23Speaker 3: was it an ugly start, man, And uh yeah, there's
- 1:26Speaker 3: no other way to really phrase it. I mean there's
- 1:28Speaker 3: a lot of ways. I think Coach McDonald and the
- 1:30Speaker 3: rest of the staff, players included really everyone in that
- 1:33Speaker 3: stadium that wasn't supporting the Broncos, drew up that game,
- 1:36Speaker 3: and it did not include how that game started. I mean,
- 1:42Speaker 3: Seahawks get the ball in the first possession, Gino Smith
- 1:45Speaker 3: gets sacked on play number one, okay, not great. Play
- 1:49Speaker 3: number two, he gets hit on his release intercepted by
- 1:52Speaker 3: Alex Singleton. That set up the Broncos deep and Seahawks territory.
- 1:56Speaker 3: And as bad as that start was, I think the
- 1:58Speaker 3: theme that you're gonna hear me talk about today is
- 2:00Speaker 3: the Seahawks defense and how unbelievably impressive they were, and
- 2:04Speaker 3: it started right out the gate. The thing about you know,
- 2:08Speaker 3: defense in really good football teams, a mark about those
- 2:11Speaker 3: teams is how they react and how do they respond
- 2:14Speaker 3: to sudden change, sudden change of possession. Here you are
- 2:17Speaker 3: in the home opener, You're jacked up, ready to go.
- 2:19Speaker 3: Think offense is get on the field, get a nice start.
- 2:22Speaker 3: They don't throw a pick. You're on the field, backed
- 2:24Speaker 3: up in your own territory. But the Seahawks defense definitely
- 2:28Speaker 3: stood up and held the Broncos to just four yards
- 2:31Speaker 3: on three plays, making the Broncos after settle four field goal,
- 2:34Speaker 3: making the score three to nothing. There On the next possession,
- 2:38Speaker 3: the Seahawks would also kind of shoot themselves in the
- 2:40Speaker 3: foot again, fall start on first down and then go
- 2:43Speaker 3: three and out. So things weren't clinking early offensively. Both
- 2:47Speaker 3: teams would punt on the next three possessions. Then the
- 2:50Speaker 3: Seahawks finally showed some signs of life. And this is
- 2:52Speaker 3: why I really like seeing after those three and now
- 2:55Speaker 3: if they go on a seven play forty six yard
- 2:57Speaker 3: drive that was assessed by a roughing passer penalty. Nonetheless,
- 3:01Speaker 3: the Seahawks to go down kick a field goal and
- 3:05Speaker 3: kind of injection life there right. Le Broncos would answer
- 3:09Speaker 3: on the next possession, getting their first first down driving
- 3:11Speaker 3: down the field in twelve play drive. However, bon Nicks
- 3:14Speaker 3: would be intercepted by Julian Love, Bigusa, Julian Love, and
- 3:17Speaker 3: again we'll talk about the defense because the safety play
- 3:19Speaker 3: was ridiculous between Julian and ray Sewn Jenkins, Cavon Wallace,
- 3:23Speaker 3: we're all doing their thing now the Seahawks. The downside
- 3:28Speaker 3: about Juln Lil's pick is the Seahawks are now starting
- 3:30Speaker 3: on the one yard line and the result, obviously if
- 3:34Speaker 3: you guys watch, was not good. Gino Smath Genos Math
- 3:37Speaker 3: Gino Smith was rolling out to his left intended for
- 3:41Speaker 3: DK Metcalf on the pass. Unfortunately, there was a hole
- 3:44Speaker 3: on Anthony Bradford in the end zone and the rules
- 3:47Speaker 3: are you get a holding call in the end zone
- 3:48Speaker 3: that results in a safety. That made to score five
- 3:51Speaker 3: to three Denver. Now, after the free kick, the defense
- 3:55Speaker 3: forced another three and out, again playing at a high level.
- 3:58Speaker 3: But on the ensuing play, the Seahawks would muff the punt,
- 4:01Speaker 3: giving the Broncos the ball back on the Seahawks nine
- 4:04Speaker 3: yard line. See when we're talking about bad starts, that
- 4:07Speaker 3: alone right there is about as bad as you can get.
- 4:10Speaker 3: But the Seahawks defense once again would step up, holding
- 4:14Speaker 3: the Broncos to negative yardage, making them settle for another
- 4:18Speaker 3: field goal, and that made the score eight to three.
- 4:20Speaker 3: So things were looking pretty rough at that point. And
- 4:24Speaker 3: that's when our guy number seven but number one in
- 4:27Speaker 3: your hearts, Geno Smith, took the game into his own hands.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Gino found dk Metcalf for a twelve yard game, then
- 4:34Speaker 3: he found Tyler Lockett for a nineteen yard game, and
- 4:37Speaker 3: on the next play he rumbled for a thirty four
- 4:40Speaker 3: yard touchdown, the longest run of his career. And Manos
- 4:44Speaker 3: cool to see Geno show off the wheels there, and hey,
- 4:48Speaker 3: we always hear about how guys the work guys are
- 4:50Speaker 3: doing in the offseason, and it kind of got put
- 4:53Speaker 3: on full display there, Gino getting to show the wheels
- 4:56Speaker 3: and just kind of show that there was some life
- 4:57Speaker 3: in this offense. And that was great because I the
- 5:00Speaker 3: Seahawks are first leaded game at nine to eight. Two
- 5:03Speaker 3: point conversion try was no good, but the Seahawks were ahead.
- 5:06Speaker 3: The Hawks would continue to play well defensively, forcing a
- 5:08Speaker 3: punt on the Broncos' next possession, but the Broncos would
- 5:11Speaker 3: pin the Seahawks back on their one yard line again,
- 5:15Speaker 3: and you know, at that point, I definitely wasn't thinking
- 5:18Speaker 3: they'd get a safety again. I was thinking, Okay, let's
- 5:20Speaker 3: let's get a run play, let's get something going downhill,
- 5:23Speaker 3: and that's what the Seahawks tried to do. Unfortunately, Zach
- 5:25Speaker 3: Scharponnae would get tackled in the end zone again on
- 5:28Speaker 3: first down for the second safety of the half. The
- 5:31Speaker 3: Seahawks hadn't allowed multiple safeties in a game since nineteen
- 5:35Speaker 3: eighty two against these same Broncos in a game in
- 5:38Speaker 3: the Kingdom sounds pretty crazy. Definitely, It's not something anyone
- 5:41Speaker 3: expected to see. After that, they are both teams will
- 5:45Speaker 3: exchange a couple of punts, and the Broncos wild close
- 5:48Speaker 3: out the first half of the field goal, making the
- 5:49Speaker 3: score thirteen to nine. So when you're going into halftime
- 5:53Speaker 3: with that score, given all the things that happened, the sacks,
- 5:55Speaker 3: the safeties, the muff punt, you're feeling pretty good. You're
- 6:00Speaker 3: feeling pretty good because the defense was just lights out. Essentially,
- 6:04Speaker 3: shutting down the Broncos at everything they decided to do,
- 6:07Speaker 3: so that was a great sign going into the second half,
- 6:10Speaker 3: and the second half started a lot better. Hawks forced
- 6:13Speaker 3: the three and out by that great defense on the
- 6:14Speaker 3: first possession and then answer with an impressive six play
- 6:17Speaker 3: sixty one yard drive leading the way. Ken Walker carried
- 6:22Speaker 3: the ball five times on that drive, including a twenty
- 6:24Speaker 3: three yard touchdown run up the right sideline that made
- 6:27Speaker 3: to score sixteen to thirteen, the lead the Seahawks will
- 6:30Speaker 3: not relinquish the rest of the way. Next possession, ky
- 6:33Speaker 3: Von Wallas would force a fumble and the Seahawks would
- 6:35Speaker 3: add another field goal. After Denver punt, the Seahawks would
- 6:39Speaker 3: turn in their longest drive of the day, going eighty
- 6:41Speaker 3: yards on six plays. Drive ended with a thirty yard
- 6:44Speaker 3: touchdown to Zach Sharbonay on a great run play designed
- 6:48Speaker 3: by Ryan Greb. I'll talk about that a little bit
- 6:49Speaker 3: more later. That made to score twenty six to thirteen,
- 6:52Speaker 3: and that's when you kind of felt like the game
- 6:54Speaker 3: was out of reach, really, that the Seahows were really
- 6:57Speaker 3: kind of in firm control of the football game. The
- 7:00Speaker 3: teams with trade puntsrequel and would stop a Denver drive.
- 7:03Speaker 3: With the interception, Seahawks would go three Now Broncos would
- 7:07Speaker 3: then put together their only touchdown drive of the day,
- 7:10Speaker 3: ending with a bow Knicks for your touchdown. That made
- 7:12Speaker 3: the game twenty six to twenty. So yes, a one
- 7:15Speaker 3: possession game that but you still felt like the Seahawks
- 7:18Speaker 3: were in control of the ballgame. And leave it to
- 7:22Speaker 3: Gino Smith getting the ball back under two minutes. You
- 7:25Speaker 3: just need a first down to clinch the game, and
- 7:27Speaker 3: that's exactly what they did as Gino linked up with
- 7:30Speaker 3: Tyler Lockett, who made one of the most impressive plays
- 7:34Speaker 3: that I've seen in a long time. And that's saying
- 7:36Speaker 3: something because Tyler makes those kind of catches all the time,
- 7:38Speaker 3: but the degree of difficulty, the situation and where it
- 7:42Speaker 3: happened to make that one hand grab right there where
- 7:44Speaker 3: the defender draped all over him. Great play design, great
- 7:47Speaker 3: execution by Geno, great execution by Tyler, and that sealed
- 7:50Speaker 3: the deal. Guys want to zero the Seahawks in the
- 7:54Speaker 3: Mike McDonald era, and it was just so impressive to
- 7:56Speaker 3: see really just the inten city, like I said about
- 8:00Speaker 3: the defense and just the way people are flying around.
- 8:04Speaker 3: There's this a different level that I feel like we
- 8:07Speaker 3: hadn't seen in a few years with just everything put
- 8:09Speaker 3: together between all the guys. So it was really cool
- 8:11Speaker 3: to see how the guys did that. So that is
- 8:14Speaker 3: what had happened was But now it's time to talk
- 8:16Speaker 3: about some of the guys that made plays. Playmakers to playmakers.
- 8:26Speaker 2: What time.
- 8:26Speaker 4: It is.
- 8:30Speaker 3: A lot of playmakers, and normally in this part of
- 8:33Speaker 3: the show I would lean on I'd start with the
- 8:35Speaker 3: quarterback because Geno Smith often is leading playmakers with just
- 8:39Speaker 3: the place he makes on a week two week basis.
- 8:42Speaker 3: But if you watch that football game on Sunday, I'd
- 8:45Speaker 3: be hard pressed to not start with the defensive unit
- 8:48Speaker 3: and the defensive unit alone because they made play after
- 8:53Speaker 3: play after play after play, and it was everybody. It
- 8:55Speaker 3: was all eleven, any eleven that any combination that was
- 8:59Speaker 3: on the field, they were making plays. You know, it
- 9:01Speaker 3: was really good to see. And I'll started off with
- 9:03Speaker 3: Julian Love, new to the team last year, but now
- 9:06Speaker 3: he's really stepped into that role, got a nice little extension,
- 9:09Speaker 3: but he is one of our big time main players
- 9:13Speaker 3: on defense, and he played like that on Sunday. Twelve tackles,
- 9:16Speaker 3: one TfL one pass, defended one in t and just
- 9:21Speaker 3: great in the open field. I couldn't tell you how
- 9:23Speaker 3: many times he had a one on one situation where
- 9:25Speaker 3: we had to make a playing tackle, receiver, ball carrier,
- 9:28Speaker 3: whatever it was. Julian Love did it. And we talked
- 9:31Speaker 3: about this on the pregame show. You know, the guys bump,
- 9:33Speaker 3: Paul moy, Ray Roberts, Brian Walters. It just felt like
- 9:36Speaker 3: they were out there playing free, and Julian among others
- 9:39Speaker 3: that I'm gonna mention here in a second, we're out
- 9:41Speaker 3: there just playing free, in my opinion, just making plays
- 9:44Speaker 3: and playing with that that reckless abandon if you will,
- 9:48Speaker 3: right going downhill, not worried about missing tackles, and they
- 9:52Speaker 3: were very sure, you know, as a team, sure tackling.
- 9:55Speaker 3: But it was just really good to see. It just
- 9:56Speaker 3: felt like they were playing free and they were playing fast.
- 9:59Speaker 3: Julian Love. Always great to see a guy make a
- 10:02Speaker 3: big turnover there on the goal line, you know, stopping
- 10:06Speaker 3: the never from scoring points. So big ups Julian Love.
- 10:08Speaker 3: He had a great day out there. And then Tyrel
- 10:11Speaker 3: Dotson man number zero. But man, I think Tyra, I'm
- 10:16Speaker 3: just gonna say right now, I think he might be
- 10:18Speaker 3: an all pro and maybe that's getting way ahead of
- 10:21Speaker 3: the game, but when I watched him, I saw all
- 10:24Speaker 3: pro behavior, and I don't know what it is about him.
- 10:26Speaker 3: We know he's been a great player in his career
- 10:28Speaker 3: leading up to this, but seeing him in that Mike
- 10:30Speaker 3: McDonald defense, holy smokes man. Statistically, ten tackles, one TfL,
- 10:36Speaker 3: one pass defended, and he was all over the field.
- 10:40Speaker 3: I found myself in the radio booth just watching number zero,
- 10:43Speaker 3: just watching him and just how he was reading and reacting.
- 10:46Speaker 3: It was boom right now. And for the most part,
- 10:48Speaker 3: when he hits you, you stayed hit. And golly, there's
- 10:51Speaker 3: so many different plays where he's getting blocked. There was
- 10:55Speaker 3: a couple of screenplays where he fought off an offensive lineman,
- 10:58Speaker 3: made the play and he was just she was just
- 11:00Speaker 3: all over the place, and it was really cool to
- 11:02Speaker 3: see him do that. He was great in coverage. I
- 11:04Speaker 3: think there's a play that he'd want back. He could
- 11:06Speaker 3: have had potentially a pick six or not a pick six.
- 11:09Speaker 3: He might have just had the interception, but he was
- 11:11Speaker 3: all over the field. And Dotson, again, I think it's
- 11:14Speaker 3: a little early to say that. I think he's for
- 11:15Speaker 3: suregan to be an All Pro, but I'm almost there.
- 11:18Speaker 3: I felt like I've seen enough. If he can play
- 11:20Speaker 3: at that level week in and week out, boy, we
- 11:23Speaker 3: are going to have another legendary defense here in Seattle.
- 11:27Speaker 3: Jumping back to the secondarya just go over to ray
- 11:29Speaker 3: Shawn Jenkins. You know, statistically, it's not going to blow
- 11:33Speaker 3: you out of the water. He had six tackles, but
- 11:36Speaker 3: to me, it was just there's something to be said
- 11:39Speaker 3: about a safety, specifically always being in the right place
- 11:44Speaker 3: right Usually, when you're in the right place at the
- 11:46Speaker 3: right time, big things and good things happened. He had
- 11:48Speaker 3: six tackles, But the thing that I loved to see
- 11:51Speaker 3: was there wasn't big plays over the middle. Now, him
- 11:54Speaker 3: and Dotson and Baker are all part of that, but
- 11:57Speaker 3: it was cool to see the middle of the field
- 11:59Speaker 3: being taken away and just different stuff. The way the
- 12:02Speaker 3: defenders in the back end and the front seven were
- 12:04Speaker 3: passing routes off. It was just cool to see. And
- 12:07Speaker 3: Jenkins had a couple of big plays, a couple of
- 12:09Speaker 3: big time hits, so he's being physical, being a shut tackler,
- 12:12Speaker 3: getting guys on the ground. So love to see Rayshawn
- 12:15Speaker 3: Jenkins in his Seahawks debut, because I think there's a
- 12:19Speaker 3: lot of big things there and the tandem of him
- 12:21Speaker 3: and Julian love very excited. We've had good tantems there
- 12:24Speaker 3: over the years, obviously the Cam and the Earls, even
- 12:28Speaker 3: going far back to Jamal and Caandre Diggs when both
- 12:31Speaker 3: were healthy. But I love what I'm seeing out of
- 12:33Speaker 3: this new tandem, and I think big things coming now.
- 12:36Speaker 3: Saying that secondary Riek wolling Man, I feel like outside
- 12:41Speaker 3: of this building, there was a lot of conversation about
- 12:44Speaker 3: his level of play last year, you know, after a
- 12:46Speaker 3: huge rookie season he had six six interceptions pro bowler.
- 12:51Speaker 3: But for me, Reek just really I'm really happy for
- 12:57Speaker 3: him because I don't think he played as poorly as
- 12:59Speaker 3: some people try to make it out. To see him,
- 13:00Speaker 3: I feel like he actually had a decent year last year,
- 13:02Speaker 3: and just to see him out there ballin' Okay, you
- 13:06Speaker 3: didn't see Sutton, you didn't see any of their guys
- 13:08Speaker 3: down the field making plays, and Riek woland is just
- 13:11Speaker 3: when you watch him, a guy at that height should
- 13:15Speaker 3: not be able to run the way he is and
- 13:16Speaker 3: move the way he does. Have the feet work and
- 13:18Speaker 3: the footwork that he does so big upsrequeling three tackles,
- 13:22Speaker 3: two passes defend in one interception. So I'm just super
- 13:25Speaker 3: proud of seeing him and what it could be. He's
- 13:28Speaker 3: another guy that is a Pro Bowl, all Pro type talent,
- 13:32Speaker 3: and I think we're gonna see that in full display
- 13:33Speaker 3: in this defense. With coach Mike McDonald moving on from Rieke,
- 13:37Speaker 3: we got ken Walker going on to the offensive side.
- 13:41Speaker 3: I could literally go through the line and hit every
- 13:42Speaker 3: defensive player, but those are some of the ones I
- 13:44Speaker 3: just wanted to jump out at me. But like I said,
- 13:46Speaker 3: back to ken Walker, I talked about it in the
- 13:49Speaker 3: preview podcast. He's a guy that I think is going
- 13:51Speaker 3: to have at least fifteen hundred yards, and when you
- 13:54Speaker 3: have one hundred yards on Sunday, he's well on his
- 13:57Speaker 3: way to getting what I had proclaimed. Not that that
- 14:01Speaker 3: is something that I should get super happy about, because
- 14:04Speaker 3: anyone who looks at kin Walker probably would agree with me.
- 14:07Speaker 3: But anyway, ken Walker great game. Twenty carries, one hundred
- 14:09Speaker 3: and three yards, one touchdown, five two yards per carry,
- 14:13Speaker 3: ran for one hundred yards for the seventh time in
- 14:15Speaker 3: his career. And what I loved about that, honestly, what
- 14:18Speaker 3: I loved about ken Walker was the way that he
- 14:21Speaker 3: changed the game. The Seahawks offense was out of sorts
- 14:25Speaker 3: the entire first half, and in the second half, when
- 14:29Speaker 3: ken Walker started running the ball, the offensive line, everyone
- 14:31Speaker 3: kind of got in sync and that's when the right
- 14:33Speaker 3: things started to happen. That's when the game started to
- 14:35Speaker 3: open up. That's when the past game started to open up.
- 14:38Speaker 3: So great to see ken Walker doing his thing. And
- 14:40Speaker 3: he's just such a difficult player to tackle and account
- 14:42Speaker 3: for with his skill set. So big ops of K
- 14:45Speaker 3: nine doing his thing. And then Tyler Lockett. We talked
- 14:48Speaker 3: about this again on the postgame show. Tyler didn't get
- 14:53Speaker 3: talked about a ton this offseason and in training camp.
- 14:56Speaker 3: You know, maybe that's just recency biased. Maybe it's because
- 14:58Speaker 3: he's already a guy that's one of the most underrated
- 15:00Speaker 3: players in the National Football League. We've been saying that
- 15:03Speaker 3: essentially his entire time in the league, which is now
- 15:07Speaker 3: in year ten, which is wild because he should just
- 15:09Speaker 3: be rated the way he is. But anyway, he's been
- 15:12Speaker 3: dinged up a little bit and being taken care of,
- 15:14Speaker 3: so we didn't see m as much in the preseason,
- 15:16Speaker 3: but boy, Tyler Lockett's still good. Still got it six
- 15:20Speaker 3: receptions seventy seven yards, most of them in the second half,
- 15:22Speaker 3: and they were all clutch, including obviously the one handed
- 15:26Speaker 3: game ceiling reception that ended the game there, and he
- 15:30Speaker 3: became the second player in franchise history, also the one
- 15:34Speaker 3: hundred and thirteenth player in NFL history to record eight
- 15:39Speaker 3: thousand receiving yards in a season, excuse me, in a career.
- 15:46Speaker 3: So I was really happy to see that going there
- 15:49Speaker 3: for our man Tyler Lockett, because boy, he's just such
- 15:53Speaker 3: a good player and so consistent. So big ups, Tyler Lockett.
- 15:57Speaker 3: Keep doing your thing. You're going to be It's almost
- 15:59Speaker 3: the top of every record that the Seahawks have. Obviously,
- 16:03Speaker 3: Steve Largent the Goat has most of those, and he's
- 16:05Speaker 3: gonna be hard to catch. But anyway, big ups, Tyler Lockett,
- 16:08Speaker 3: and I'll finish the segment with Gino Smith eighteen of
- 16:12Speaker 3: twenty five and seventy one yards, one touchdown, one interception.
- 16:17Speaker 3: Hard to falls him on the interception because he was
- 16:19Speaker 3: hit when he was releasing the football. Also had a
- 16:22Speaker 3: thirty four yard rushing touchdown, the longest of his career.
- 16:26Speaker 3: So Gino Smith, Big ups. To him. I feel like
- 16:28Speaker 3: he's gonna have an amazing year. And it was just
- 16:30Speaker 3: really cool to see different guys stand out today because
- 16:34Speaker 3: I feel like it's on Sunday, it's gonna be a
- 16:36Speaker 3: thing that we're going to see a lot of moving forward.
- 16:39Speaker 3: So big ups to all the playmakers. We'll shine some
- 16:42Speaker 3: lane in the receivers. Bump usually handles this the receiver roundup,
- 16:46Speaker 3: and when you look at the receiving numbers, it's not
- 16:48Speaker 3: gonna be the numbers that are gonna blow out the water, right.
- 16:52Speaker 3: Tyler Locket led receivers with seventy seven yards on six receptions.
- 16:56Speaker 3: Zach Sharberney had two receptions for twenty nine yards in
- 16:58Speaker 3: a touchdown. DEC three for twenty nine, JSN two for nineteen,
- 17:03Speaker 3: Noah two for eleven, K nine two for six, and
- 17:06Speaker 3: Lavish kus chanot was and intended target had one reception
- 17:10Speaker 3: and zero yards. So definitely not something that's gonna light
- 17:14Speaker 3: the world on fire. The one cool thing I do
- 17:16Speaker 3: like to see though, is the balance between the run
- 17:19Speaker 3: game and the past game and the amount of people
- 17:22Speaker 3: that are listed here one, two, three, four, five, six, seven,
- 17:25Speaker 3: eight and tended receivers seven with reception so obviously you'd
- 17:29Speaker 3: want some more yardage there. But if the balls being
- 17:33Speaker 3: spread around between DK, Tyler, JSN, the running backs all that,
- 17:36Speaker 3: it's always a good sign, always a good sign. So next,
- 17:41Speaker 3: as we keep kind of struggle along here recapping some
- 17:43Speaker 3: of the things that happen in the game, I just
- 17:44Speaker 3: want to go back to some of the really big
- 17:46Speaker 3: plays and just talk about a couple really cool plays
- 17:49Speaker 3: that happened in the game. We'll go we'll call it
- 17:51Speaker 3: our plays of the game. And it started with I'll
- 17:54Speaker 3: start on offense, just because things were going so poorly
- 17:59Speaker 3: to start the game, and Gino really was a spark
- 18:02Speaker 3: that kind of got us there. So let's talk about
- 18:04Speaker 3: his thirty four year touchdown to get the Seahawks in
- 18:06Speaker 3: the end zone for the first time on Sunday.
- 18:09Speaker 4: Gino from the shot gun, Walker stays in the backfield,
- 18:13Speaker 4: DK wind to the left side.
- 18:14Speaker 3: Here comes the blitz.
- 18:15Speaker 4: Gino steps up, heads running room thirty.
- 18:18Speaker 1: Twenty five, twenty five cut down, say Hawks, chain O.
- 18:26Speaker 4: Step right up the gun thirty four yards. He said,
- 18:32Speaker 4: if they're gonna take everybody away, I'm gonna take it myself.
- 18:36Speaker 2: And he does.
- 18:37Speaker 3: So what I loved about this play. So Gino in
- 18:40Speaker 3: the Seahawks offense catches the Denver Broncos in man coverage right,
- 18:43Speaker 3: So when you're in man coverage offensively, you're not looking
- 18:46Speaker 3: at the quarterback right, you have your eyes on your man.
- 18:49Speaker 3: And at that point when Gino decides to take off
- 18:53Speaker 3: and run, the only people who know that he's taken
- 18:56Speaker 3: off is probably maybe the defensive line and the covers
- 18:59Speaker 3: of Bronk in there in man, but I think it
- 19:01Speaker 3: was a man free so they did have a safety
- 19:03Speaker 3: over the top and he's the only one that recognized
- 19:05Speaker 3: that Geno Smith is now out of the pocket and running.
- 19:07Speaker 3: By the time the rest of the defense realized it
- 19:09Speaker 3: was too late. Gino gets up to that second level,
- 19:11Speaker 3: puts a move on the safety into the end zone,
- 19:14Speaker 3: gets to show off the wheels like it's back in
- 19:15Speaker 3: two thousand. Gosh, I know when he first got in
- 19:18Speaker 3: the lead back in twenty twelve, So really cool to see,
- 19:21Speaker 3: know Gino Smith show off the legs and show what
- 19:24Speaker 3: he can do there, but also kind of kickstart this offense.
- 19:26Speaker 3: So that was a big play in the game. Another
- 19:28Speaker 3: big play in this football game was Ken Walker getting
- 19:32Speaker 3: in the end zone on twenty three yard touchdown.
- 19:35Speaker 4: Three receivers, including JSN on the left side. But JSN
- 19:38Speaker 4: is just wigged off the tackle outside. Walker's gonna run
- 19:41Speaker 4: it again. JSN throws the block, Walker turns up field.
- 19:44Speaker 4: He dot him touchdown. Seahawks checking the dictionary under answer,
- 19:52Speaker 4: And that's what the Seahawks offense just did right down
- 19:56Speaker 4: the field to start the second half. Ryan grubs, we
- 20:00Speaker 4: want to run the football. By golly, they did. Walker
- 20:03Speaker 4: from twenty three out puts it in on the Seahawks
- 20:06Speaker 4: go back on top fifteen.
- 20:07Speaker 3: Thirteen Raves another great call. He said it right. He
- 20:13Speaker 3: said it right there. They said they're gonna run the football,
- 20:15Speaker 3: and they came out in the second half. That's exactly
- 20:18Speaker 3: what they did downhill football. Ken Walker had five runs
- 20:21Speaker 3: on that possession. And the cool thing if you guys
- 20:24Speaker 3: have a chance to look at the play. I've had
- 20:26Speaker 3: chance to look at the all twenty two or just
- 20:28Speaker 3: even the normal broadcast feed. Cool thing about this play
- 20:32Speaker 3: number one we highlight watch number sixty seven. Charles Cross
- 20:37Speaker 3: is going to be a problem this year. I've felt
- 20:41Speaker 3: that about him since we drafted him. Big up to
- 20:43Speaker 3: Edwin Hooper, who's on our squad here with the Seahawks.
- 20:46Speaker 3: Who's called note of this earlier, but man, oh man,
- 20:52Speaker 3: Charles Cross takes his former teammate Cody Barton and drives
- 20:56Speaker 3: him into the earth. Holy smokes. Cross is a strong dude.
- 21:01Speaker 3: He gets up the second level, gets the linebacker boom
- 21:03Speaker 3: into the ground. Then he had a couple pulling guards
- 21:06Speaker 3: and then ken Walker making the first linebacker miss. And
- 21:09Speaker 3: then he's got a couple guys in the secondary. And
- 21:12Speaker 3: if that's the case, it's gonna be ken Walker every
- 21:14Speaker 3: single time. Ken Walker's got that wiggle, he's always gonna
- 21:17Speaker 3: make usually one guy miss on any given play. But
- 21:19Speaker 3: to see him do what he did, To see Charles
- 21:22Speaker 3: Cross planting linebackers into the turf, love to see it.
- 21:25Speaker 3: Really show that the offense kind of going to the
- 21:27Speaker 3: next level on Sunday. So great to see that play.
- 21:30Speaker 3: And then the last play I want to talk about
- 21:32Speaker 3: this is Geno Smith finding Zach Sharbonay in the end
- 21:36Speaker 3: zone for a thirty yard touchdown.
- 21:38Speaker 4: Here's Gino on a first down and ten stepping up
- 21:40Speaker 4: in the pocket, looks throw downfield wide open, touchdown, Sahawks.
- 21:46Speaker 4: Zack Charbonay wheels out of the backfield and nobody saw
- 21:51Speaker 4: him except us thirty yards for the touchdown and the
- 21:55Speaker 4: Seahawks stretch their lead to twenty five to thirteen.
- 22:00Speaker 3: But I love their great play call for Ryan Grubb.
- 22:03Speaker 3: Great play call the way that they had it. Essentially,
- 22:06Speaker 3: you have a couple of crossing routes going underneath. You
- 22:08Speaker 3: have DK running either like an out so kind of
- 22:11Speaker 3: an outbreaking route towards the Seahawks sideline, and then you
- 22:14Speaker 3: have Zach Sarbonnay who's in the backfield, who leaks out
- 22:16Speaker 3: to Geno's right and just kind of runs a nice
- 22:19Speaker 3: little wheel route and the linebacker that's on backside definitely
- 22:22Speaker 3: a blown coverage on Denver's part, but it was schemed
- 22:26Speaker 3: up right because the linebacker who's on that side was
- 22:31Speaker 3: definitely in a bind right because Jackson Smith and Jagbu
- 22:33Speaker 3: is running a crossing route that's going right towards him,
- 22:37Speaker 3: so he gets distracted, kind of takes one beat towards Jackson,
- 22:40Speaker 3: and that's when Zach Sharbonnay leaks out behind him. Gino
- 22:44Speaker 3: Smith hits him wide open touchdown pass. So I just
- 22:47Speaker 3: love it because it wasn't luck. It was something that
- 22:50Speaker 3: Ryan Grubb and the offense schemed up, put their defenders
- 22:53Speaker 3: in a predicament and made that linebacker have to make
- 22:55Speaker 3: a choice. He chose the wrong one, hesitated for just
- 22:58Speaker 3: one second, and it didn't ass road Zach Sharbnet into
- 23:02Speaker 3: the end zone for the touchdown. So an amazing game.
- 23:06Speaker 3: Amazing game on Sunday. Like I said, obviously not the
- 23:08Speaker 3: best start offensively, but overall, just start the new era
- 23:11Speaker 3: with Mike McDonald's really cool to see. And that brings
- 23:15Speaker 3: me to my favorite formation in football, the victory formation.
- 23:22Speaker 4: Here comes the Seahawks offense onto the field and the
- 23:25Speaker 4: Vikings defense crutching out there knowing that one meal down
- 23:30Speaker 4: and the Seahawks are gonna wind the clock down and
- 23:33Speaker 4: win this one.
- 23:34Speaker 1: It's the victory formation on Hawk Talk.
- 23:37Speaker 3: Wasn't always pretty. Okay, it wasn't always pretty, but the
- 23:40Speaker 3: Seahawks picked up a huge first win under new head
- 23:42Speaker 3: coach Mike McDonald, and I set it to start the podcast.
- 23:46Speaker 3: The defense was noticeably different. Okay, all eleven players are
- 23:51Speaker 3: flying to the football on every single snap. They're physical,
- 23:54Speaker 3: they're aggressive, they're playing downhill and that's what Seahawks football
- 23:58Speaker 3: has been about. Okay. Errol made this defense famous for
- 24:02Speaker 3: what they did with the Legion of Boom and for
- 24:04Speaker 3: years after that. Right defensively, the Seahawks numbers have kind
- 24:08Speaker 3: of fallen off the last couple of years, but it
- 24:10Speaker 3: was really cool to see that Brandon football again. Guys
- 24:13Speaker 3: flying down hill, like I said, being aggressive, everybody, secondary, linebackers,
- 24:17Speaker 3: defensive front, everyone getting after the quarterback, and just a
- 24:20Speaker 3: level of speed and it just looked like guys were
- 24:22Speaker 3: so sure the communication was on point. This defense under
- 24:25Speaker 3: Mike McDonald is going to be something special, something that
- 24:29Speaker 3: we are going to need to pay attention to moving
- 24:31Speaker 3: forward because this defense and I kind of been thrown
- 24:33Speaker 3: it out a they're going to be a top ten defense.
- 24:35Speaker 3: Should we wait? Should we you know, hold back some
- 24:38Speaker 3: of our enthusiasm. I'm all in seeing what I saw
- 24:41Speaker 3: yes with rookie quarterbacks. So we'll have to see how
- 24:42Speaker 3: this progresses throughout the year. But I'm sold on what
- 24:45Speaker 3: I think this defense can be. And they're without question
- 24:48Speaker 3: in the top ten in my opinion, So it'll be
- 24:51Speaker 3: fun to watch that going forward. And you know, Julian Love,
- 24:55Speaker 3: Tyrol Dotson, Jerome Baker, they love the charge throwing so
- 24:58Speaker 3: many other different guys. It's really hard to see guys
- 25:00Speaker 3: out and I apologize for not mentioning everyone on the
- 25:03Speaker 3: defense by name, Leonard Williams, Derek Call, all the different guys.
- 25:07Speaker 3: Jaron Reid made lots of plays, so that was cool
- 25:10Speaker 3: to see. And offensively, yeah, it wasn't a great start,
- 25:14Speaker 3: but they battled back. They were resilient. And what I
- 25:16Speaker 3: love about that is I can't imagine being Ryan Grubb
- 25:19Speaker 3: in your first game and have all those things happen.
- 25:21Speaker 3: Obviously he's been in the game for a long time,
- 25:24Speaker 3: but your first NFL game, right, But what does he do?
- 25:27Speaker 3: He stays the course, does what he set out to do,
- 25:29Speaker 3: which was run the football, and that showed in the
- 25:31Speaker 3: second half, ken Walker going all over the place one
- 25:33Speaker 3: hundred three yards on twenty carries, So they were able
- 25:37Speaker 3: to run the football for over one hundred and forty
- 25:39Speaker 3: yards total and went turnover free in the second half.
- 25:42Speaker 3: So great to see out of the offense. And like
- 25:44Speaker 3: we mentioned, Tyler Lockett, mister Reliable, sealing the game with
- 25:48Speaker 3: that one heart, one handed catch. So all in all,
- 25:51Speaker 3: it was a great It was a great outing, It
- 25:53Speaker 3: was a great performance by the Seahawks team. Great to
- 25:56Speaker 3: see them go one and oh, and that's all you
- 25:58Speaker 3: want to do, as coach McDonald said, you want to
- 26:00Speaker 3: stack wins, and that's what they did in week one.
- 26:04Speaker 3: That was a lot of me talking. Holy smokes. I'm
- 26:06Speaker 3: happy it's over. Michael Bumpus will be back with me
- 26:08Speaker 3: on Thursday as we try to get you guys ready
