Latest / Vigilante Vibes Podcast / Ep. 211. Most Influential Black Marvel Characters
Transcript
- 0:11Hello Marvel fans, comic geeks and all the nerds in between.
- 0:13My name is Megan with vigilante vibes and I am here with another
- 0:16episode today and it is actually not a character breakdown, but I
- 0:21want to talk about influential black characters of the Marvel
- 0:24Universe. It is Black History Month and
- 0:27what better way to celebrate than the most influential black
- 0:30characters of Marvel. Keep in mind these are my
- 0:33personal preferences so if you have another character that
- 0:35isn't on the list, let me know in the comments.
- 0:37These are in no specific order, just some are my favorites.
- 0:42So we're going to start out strong with Sync.
- 0:46As a founding member of Generation X, it became pretty
- 0:49clear quickly that Syncs potential was basically off the
- 0:51charts. His mutant ability originally
- 0:54let him sync up with other nearby mutants, copying their
- 0:57powers as long as they were close.
- 0:59The catch was obvious, if there wasn't someone around with super
- 1:03strength or some other ability, he could not use them.
- 1:06Since being revived though, that limit doesn't really apply the
- 1:09same way anymore. Sync can now remember people
- 1:13he's recently synced with, letting him hold on to certain
- 1:17powers for longer periods of time.
- 1:19On top of that, he isn't limited to mutants anymore, he can sync
- 1:23with anyone who has superpowers, which is which massively expands
- 1:26what he's capable of. And he's a very, very cool
- 1:29character. Miles Morales.
- 1:32Miles Morales got his powers the same way Peter Parker did, by
- 1:36being bitten by a genetically enhanced spider.
- 1:39Like Peter, he didn't really step up as a hero right away.
- 1:43That changed after he witnessed Peter's final battle against the
- 1:47Green Goblin, which pushed Miles to carry on his legacy as the
- 1:50new Spider Man. Even though he's still young,
- 1:53Miles is incredibly strong, able to lift around 10 tons.
- 1:57Just like Peter, his strength is expected to grow the older he
- 2:01gets. On top of that, he has super
- 2:03fast reflexes and enhanced durability, making him one of
- 2:06the strongest Spider Man out there and easily one of the most
- 2:09powerful young heroes around. The next One Sweet Christmas, we
- 2:14have to include Luke Cage on this list.
- 2:17Notwithstanding the fantastic Netflix series, Luke Cage was
- 2:21established as a common man's guardian.
- 2:24He stayed in Harlem to be a source of strength for his
- 2:27community. Sure he was bulletproof and had
- 2:30the muscle power of like 1000 oxen, but he was a hero to the
- 2:35people of the street. A family man with an
- 2:38inspirational back story made him tangible and admirable.
- 2:42In June of 1972, Luke Cage Hero for Hire number one hit the
- 2:46bookshelves and comic fans at that time had to had to adjust.
- 2:53You have to think in the 70s to have a black comic book
- 2:56character be one of the heroes of his own comic book run with
- 3:00something very unusual for society.
- 3:02So it was very important that he made an impact and he did.
- 3:06And he is still the power man Marvel needs.
- 3:10RiRi Williams I will not accept any slander against RiRi
- 3:14Williams. RiRi is a young genius who
- 3:17managed to reverse engineer Tony Stark's Iron Man armor, her
- 3:21first, very first version. It didn't go well, it literally
- 3:25blew apart during its first Test run, but it's a learning
- 3:30journey. But each new suit got better and
- 3:33better, eventually letting her step into the superhero role as
- 3:37Iron Heart. While her armor is clearly
- 3:39inspired by Tony's designs, it doesn't actually use Stark tech
- 3:43aside from the onboard AI. Even so, it gives her durability
- 3:48and strength on par with Iron Man and War Machine.
- 3:51More recently, she's gotten her hands on the Mandarin's Ten
- 3:54Rings, though those are strictly a last resort option.
- 3:59And plus, her series on Disney Plus was fantastic and I watch
- 4:05it a lot. This next one is a super, super
- 4:09underrated character and I don't understand why he doesn't get
- 4:12more of a spotlight. Blue Marvel.
- 4:15Stop me if you've heard this one before.
- 4:17A powerful black man, a standout in the military who goes on to
- 4:20become a legendary figure of Marvel Comics.
- 4:22It's happened plenty, but in this case, meet Adam Brashear,
- 4:29better known as Blue Marvel. He earned 2 Silver Stars as a
- 4:32Marine during the Korean War, then later became a lead
- 4:36researcher studying antimatter. One massive explosion later,
- 4:41Adam was transformed into a living, stable antimatter
- 4:44reactor. When it comes to powers, Blue
- 4:47Marvel pretty much checks every single box.
- 4:49He has extreme superhuman strength and skill, energy and
- 4:53antimatter manipulation, near and vulnerability, cosmic
- 4:57awareness, and incredibly powerful telekinesis.
- 5:01To really put his status into perspective, creator Kevin
- 5:05Grieveaux once pitched him in the with the question, what if
- 5:09Superman were black in the early 60s?
- 5:12And now we've got the answer because we have Blue Marvel,
- 5:16which we don't see enough of. Of course, there's no Black
- 5:21History Marvel list without Sam Wilson.
- 5:26Sam Wilson, AKA Captain America, is such an honorable man that
- 5:31Steve Rogers deemed him worthy to take the helm and the shield.
- 5:34So when you guys are sitting at home complaining he's not the
- 5:36real Captain America, well, your Lord and savior Steve thinks so.
- 5:40So. And at one point he was even
- 5:44able to used Mulnier. He was worthy of Mulnier.
- 5:49Come on guys. He has a heart of gold and has
- 5:52the respect of his entire team. Now he has the reins to an
- 5:55entirely new team of Avengers. He is that guy.
- 6:00It has been shown since Iron Man.
- 6:02He is perfect proof that what makes Captain America isn't what
- 6:06comes from a bottle, but is a good man.
- 6:08And Sam Wilson is just that, a good man.
- 6:11This one I take a little personally.
- 6:15If you know me, you know the X-Men and the mutants are
- 6:18everything to me. So this next one, Bishop.
- 6:21Let's get one thing clear about Bishop.
- 6:24He deserved better on all fronts.
- 6:27Lucas Bishop, better known as Bishop, is basically a walking
- 6:30energy battery. He can soak up weapons fire and
- 6:34raw force like a sponge in the ocean.
- 6:37Ever since the Uncanny X-Men #282 back in 1991, Professor X
- 6:41has relied on him for his raw strength and durability.
- 6:44Meanwhile, in the movies, he got maybe 20 minutes as a supporting
- 6:50character in X-Men Days of Future Past, which is criminal.
- 6:56Bishop's a former cop and an absolute menace to villains.
- 7:01And yeah, he can time travel, too, for whatever it's worth.
- 7:05Personally, I think it's time to put much more of a spotlight on
- 7:08him, and not just during February.
- 7:12This next one, another one that I think is underrated, Dr.
- 7:16Voodoo, Born in Haiti, Jericho Drum, better known as Doctor
- 7:19Voodoo, eventually rises to become the Sorcerer Supreme.
- 7:23Yeah, he's that powerful. His roots are deeply tied to the
- 7:27occult, and while that side of magic isn't always celebrated,
- 7:32it's what made him a master of the mystical and dark arts.
- 7:36When things get rough in a fight, Drum can channel the
- 7:39spirit of his late brother, Brother de Voodoo, which quite
- 7:44literally double S his power. His magic expertise makes him a
- 7:47necessary presence in the lives of Doctor Strange, Black
- 7:50Panther, and so many other people on The Avengers roster.
- 7:54He's gone toe to toe with Mephisto and fought alongside
- 7:57the savage Avengers, wielding powers that are both divine and
- 8:01semi physical. Definitely someone you do not
- 8:04want to take lightly. And when the newest Storm run
- 8:08came out and it started with Doctor Voodoo, I knew it was
- 8:12going to be a banger. And it was a banger and I want
- 8:14to see more of him everywhere. Comics.
- 8:17I want to see him in MCUI, want to see it all.
- 8:20This one is one that we all know and love and it is such a
- 8:24classic. Blade The Day Walker the vampire
- 8:26Hunter, the godfather of the MCU's besides Robert Downey
- 8:30Junior Blade is 1/2 human half vampire vampire hunter known as
- 8:35the Day Walker. Born after his mother was bitten
- 8:37by a vampire during childbirth. He's immune to vampire
- 8:41weaknesses like sunlight, garlic while keeping all of their
- 8:45enhanced strength, speed, and healing.
- 8:47Trained as a master fighter and weapons expert, Blade dedicates
- 8:51his life to wiping out vampires and other supernatural threats,
- 8:55often operating on the darker St. level side of Marvel
- 8:58alongside characters like Doctor Strange or Ghost Rider.
- 9:03This one I think is a given because she is amazing and you
- 9:10just can't get better than her. Aurora Monroe, AKA Storm Storm
- 9:16is easily one of the most influential and powerful black
- 9:19superheroes in comics, period. She made a thunderous debut in
- 9:24Giant X-Men #1 back in 1975 and has been a cornerstone of the
- 9:28X-Men ever since. She's brilliant, the daughter of
- 9:32a Kenyan Princess, and now has 0 patience for terrible people.
- 9:36Storm isn't like most superheroes.
- 9:38She's an ecopath, meaning she's physically and emotionally
- 9:41connected to the planet itself. What the Earth does, she can do.
- 9:46What she feels, the Earth, the world feels too, all within the
- 9:50limits of nature. She might not drop solar flares
- 9:54in Antarctica, but she absolutely can make a villain
- 9:58regret ever crossing her. To put it plainly, she is unlike
- 10:02any other superheroes of any color.
- 10:05And bringing us to the end of my list, This one is no surprise.
- 10:10Black Panther. Ever since the King of Wakanda
- 10:13entered Marvel Comics in Fantastic Four number 52 of
- 10:161966, he has always led the conversation of what a source of
- 10:20power black men were created to be.
- 10:23Stan Lee and Jack Kirby designed a figure of nobility and
- 10:27impregnability, and he led a mighty nation.
- 10:31He was Wakanda's champion and a beacon of might within The
- 10:35Avengers. Kevin Feige could not have paid
- 10:38enough to do better than Chadwick Boseman.
- 10:41He was regal, he was vigorous, he was T'challa, he was the
- 10:46Black Panther. Moreover, he knew why Black
- 10:49Panther was created in the 1st place.
- 10:51It was the late 60s and Marvel had a platform to say all men
- 10:55were equal, so they made a black man a king.
- 10:58Regardless of strength, skill, power or force, Black Panther
- 11:02will always be the one seed in Marvel Comics for the mighty
- 11:06black superheroes. So that is my list of the most
- 11:09influential black characters of Marvel.
- 11:11I find all of these characters to be incredible.
- 11:16I think they are ones that need more of a spotlight on them, not
- 11:21just in February. So yeah, if I missed out on
- 11:25anyone that you think should be added to this list, let me know
- 11:27in the comments. Let me know your favorite black
- 11:29character and and have a great Black History Month.
- 11:34With that being said, be sure to like and subscribe and have a
- 11:36marvelous day.
