Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, I'm I'm Adam Biggs. I played bass in a
- 0:03Speaker 1: band called Rivers and Ile. Also I'm one of the
- 0:07Speaker 1: one of the primary vocalists in the band and an
- 0:10Speaker 1: original founding member.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Brilliant, Thanks so much. Rivers O'Neil self titled album marks
- 0:16Speaker 2: a new chapter in your career. What made you decide
- 0:18Speaker 2: to name it after the band and how does this
- 0:20Speaker 2: album reflect both a return to basics and a fresh
- 0:23Speaker 2: start for the group.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Well, I think the that was the plan was always
- 0:31Speaker 1: to do a self titled record after our We we
- 0:36Speaker 1: did a series of four records that were you know,
- 0:39Speaker 1: all each based on a season, and they were, you know,
- 0:42Speaker 1: our first four records, and I always felt like that
- 0:45Speaker 1: was like a way for us to like grow up
- 0:48Speaker 1: as a band and and like figure out what the
- 0:50Speaker 1: sound is. And then we would you know, kind of
- 0:54Speaker 1: go back over those and see what we've you know,
- 0:57Speaker 1: see what we've become so far, and then like you know,
- 1:01Speaker 1: try and really hone it in and define that thing.
- 1:03Speaker 1: And that's what the new album I think feels like.
- 1:08Speaker 1: It feels like we've you know trying like trying to
- 1:11Speaker 1: remember all the eras of the band before and pull
- 1:15Speaker 1: out what we feel works the best and you know,
- 1:19Speaker 1: also been to not been to, but you know, like
- 1:23Speaker 1: take advantage of some of the changes that we've had
- 1:25Speaker 1: and you know, right for some of this new this
- 1:28Speaker 1: new lineup, and yeah, I think it felt like a
- 1:31Speaker 1: really appropriate time to be like this is Rivers of
- 1:35Speaker 1: Nile as it stands now.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely. So you guys feel like you've really solidified yourself,
- 1:41Speaker 2: Like you know, what you guys sound like and what
- 1:43Speaker 2: you guys are is that what is kind of the vibe?
- 1:46Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I mean even even though like we've you know,
- 1:49Speaker 1: we've had some lineup changes in the past past couple
- 1:54Speaker 1: of years and stuff, and I think we still have
- 1:59Speaker 1: a really strong musical identity and we really just you know,
- 2:04Speaker 1: the mission is still the same as as it has
- 2:07Speaker 1: always been, and yeah, we just wanted to like it
- 2:11Speaker 1: almost feels like, you know, with with this new lineup
- 2:14Speaker 1: and everything, it feels like almost like a first record,
- 2:16Speaker 1: which is like a good time for for a self titling,
- 2:20Speaker 1: I suppose as well.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely and yourself you've transitioned to one of the
- 2:25Speaker 2: more full time vocalists. How has that transition been for you,
- 2:29Speaker 2: both personally and musically?
- 2:32Speaker 1: For well, for me, yeah, it's been it's been a lot.
- 2:35Speaker 1: It's been a big journey. Uh, you know, having to
- 2:38Speaker 1: step up to you know, like sing like a you know,
- 2:43Speaker 1: a pro singer, like sing a full a full set
- 2:46Speaker 1: you know, like an hour long set, you know, night
- 2:50Speaker 1: after night on a tour. Uh. Is you know, that's
- 2:53Speaker 1: that's a it's a tough thing to step into.
- 2:56Speaker 2: You know.
- 2:56Speaker 1: It's also you know to also maintain my previous role
- 3:00Speaker 1: in the band and keep up the quality of the
- 3:02Speaker 1: bass playing and everything. Is it took a lot of
- 3:04Speaker 1: took a lot of preparation and practice and research and
- 3:08Speaker 1: and trial and error with especially with my voice and
- 3:12Speaker 1: trying to figure out how like you know, because I've
- 3:14Speaker 1: always done like background vocals and like there's been like
- 3:18Speaker 1: little sections where it's just me and stuff like that.
- 3:20Speaker 1: But I wanted to, you know, get something that like
- 3:25Speaker 1: works a little more dynamically. So I had to work
- 3:27Speaker 1: to develop my voice, you know as it's going to
- 3:29Speaker 1: sound for entire songs and give that all a lot
- 3:35Speaker 1: of thought. And yeah, I mean it was it's tough
- 3:37Speaker 1: and and personally, like it's just it is interesting because
- 3:43Speaker 1: you know, I've been playing hundreds of shows with Jake
- 3:47Speaker 1: and and uh, you know, we've been you know, working
- 3:51Speaker 1: together for so long that it just feels it feels
- 3:56Speaker 1: a little like it's it's not it's hard for me
- 3:59Speaker 1: to to do this in a lot of ways because
- 4:02Speaker 1: it's it is such a massive change, but it's it's
- 4:05Speaker 1: been such like a nose to the grindstone kind of
- 4:09Speaker 1: kind of thing where I don't really think about it
- 4:12Speaker 1: too much. It's just like we just is very much
- 4:15Speaker 1: basically the show must go on, yea, And yeah, we
- 4:19Speaker 1: just gotta you know, we feel compelled to not stop.
- 4:22Speaker 1: And everybody, you know, we we we thought about maybe
- 4:26Speaker 1: even like replacing a vocalist at one point, but I
- 4:29Speaker 1: think the band just like we just we just were
- 4:33Speaker 1: comfortable with each other and just wanted to keep the
- 4:36Speaker 1: unit smaller. And so I mean, but yeah, so the
- 4:41Speaker 1: it's it's been it's been a crazy thing, but it's
- 4:43Speaker 1: it's turning out really cool, and I think we're all
- 4:46Speaker 1: enjoying this new configuration.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Yeah, that's awesome. And I've always wondered, obviously it must
- 4:52Speaker 2: be really hard when you're trying to play an instrument
- 4:54Speaker 2: and sing. Has it gotten to that point yet for you? Though?
- 4:58Speaker 2: Where it's like second nature, like you can do it easy.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean it all depends on like song to song.
- 5:05Speaker 1: It's like a lot of parts are you know, it's
- 5:09Speaker 1: a lot of like this part's a lot easier to
- 5:10Speaker 1: play and sing, and then this one will be like
- 5:14Speaker 1: something that really clashes and it's really I've got to
- 5:17Speaker 1: really really practice the hell out of it. So it's
- 5:19Speaker 1: not like it's I guess it's gotten easier to where
- 5:22Speaker 1: like it does like I can just play and then
- 5:24Speaker 1: just think about the music as a whole and just
- 5:27Speaker 1: kind of do it. I guess my skill in that
- 5:31Speaker 1: has grown. But it's just it's just like another thing
- 5:34Speaker 1: I need to practice. Like, you know, I'll get a
- 5:38Speaker 1: song down on bass first and like really get that
- 5:41Speaker 1: like nailed down so I don't have to think about
- 5:43Speaker 1: what my hands are doing so much. Yeah, and then
- 5:47Speaker 1: start you know and listening to vocals the whole time,
- 5:51Speaker 1: you know, never practicing to an instrumental and just making
- 5:54Speaker 1: it so like it's second nature. It's up in my
- 5:57Speaker 1: head the whole time. Yeah.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Yeah, that's so cool. And what about Andy joining the band?
- 6:02Speaker 2: How's that influenced you guys?
- 6:05Speaker 1: I mean I think it's had a big influence. Like
- 6:08Speaker 1: we were, you know, really excited to have him. Yeah,
- 6:12Speaker 1: after he you know, he had approached us and told
- 6:14Speaker 1: us that he really, you know, he wanted the gig.
- 6:17Speaker 1: It was just like immediately the wheels started turning. I'm like, well,
- 6:21Speaker 1: what does that sound like? What is Because he's a
- 6:24Speaker 1: he's a major factor in in in you know, he's
- 6:29Speaker 1: he brings a lot of his own thing, like whether
- 6:32Speaker 1: it be riffs or and and song ideas and or
- 6:38Speaker 1: like you know, his voice is very distinct. So I
- 6:41Speaker 1: had to start thinking, well, you know, what does it
- 6:43Speaker 1: sound like when he is in our band? I mean
- 6:45Speaker 1: he was you know, he's on he sings in the
- 6:48Speaker 1: beginning of like our most popular song, you know, and
- 6:51Speaker 1: so like it's it's already been tried out, but you
- 6:54Speaker 1: know this so but having him around is you know,
- 6:57Speaker 1: it's it's like I wanted to rise to the challenge
- 7:00Speaker 1: and be like, you know, this guy everybody knows this
- 7:04Speaker 1: guy can do awesome work, but I want him to
- 7:06Speaker 1: do awesome work with us, and and you know I
- 7:09Speaker 1: have it. Have it please fans of his his own
- 7:12Speaker 1: and fans of ours as well.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, And back to you on your vocals for
- 7:18Speaker 2: a minute, I believe. Was it the first track you
- 7:21Speaker 2: seg on was sub Orbital?
- 7:23Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 7:24Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, So what was that like and how did
- 7:27Speaker 2: it set the tone for the rest of the album.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Ah, it's you know that that song was the first,
- 7:33Speaker 1: like the first song that we'd written with this this
- 7:36Speaker 1: lineup for the band. That the riff was something that
- 7:39Speaker 1: Andy brought in, and then you know, we all kind
- 7:42Speaker 1: of hammered out the the song structure. I had a
- 7:46Speaker 1: lot to say about about the way it was handled
- 7:49Speaker 1: and and and then I just felt like this it
- 7:55Speaker 1: called for this sort of like operatic kind of singing
- 8:00Speaker 1: stuff going on, almost like queen kind of kind of thing.
- 8:04Speaker 1: And then you know, also with the the the harsh
- 8:08Speaker 1: vocals being the bedrock there, so you know, bringing that
- 8:13Speaker 1: that song to life felt really cool, like having everybody
- 8:16Speaker 1: actually like it's like everybody's playing and singing. It's turned
- 8:20Speaker 1: it kind of turned up to eleven and like, yeah,
- 8:24Speaker 1: we did it in the studio and then you know,
- 8:27Speaker 1: I was just immediately like, wow, this sounds I was
- 8:30Speaker 1: really proud of it. I thought, you know, I was like,
- 8:32Speaker 1: you know, maybe this thing could work. And then then
- 8:34Speaker 1: people put it when we put it out, people seem
- 8:37Speaker 1: to really respond to it, and yeah, naturally, you know
- 8:41Speaker 1: people there's some people who you know don't like change
- 8:44Speaker 1: or you know, they need some time to warm up
- 8:46Speaker 1: to these things. But I thought it was, you know, overall,
- 8:49Speaker 1: really really well received and that was really encouraging.
- 8:53Speaker 2: YEA, yeah, that's awesome. And with you guys, is it
- 8:57Speaker 2: a collaborative effort on every track or is it sort
- 9:00Speaker 2: of just one person that's like, this is the direction,
- 9:02Speaker 2: this is what we're gonna do.
- 9:03Speaker 1: It depends. It depends on the song. Like if it's
- 9:07Speaker 1: like an idea that like because a lot of times
- 9:10Speaker 1: like what will happen is Brody will write our other
- 9:13Speaker 1: guitar player, Brody will write a bunch of little snippets
- 9:17Speaker 1: and he, you know, will just he'll just demo them out,
- 9:20Speaker 1: like you know, maybe an idea of that's like forty
- 9:23Speaker 1: five seconds or like a minute or something like that,
- 9:25Speaker 1: and then it just kind of sift through it and
- 9:28Speaker 1: I'm like, this is this is good. This is good.
- 9:30Speaker 1: And then like sometimes it just takes like maybe like
- 9:34Speaker 1: there's a few songs where like we had an idea
- 9:37Speaker 1: rolling that was based on something Brody had and then
- 9:39Speaker 1: like Andy added a little of this, and then maybe
- 9:43Speaker 1: I help finesse the actual structure of the song. And
- 9:47Speaker 1: like because sometimes Brody will hit a wall and just
- 9:50Speaker 1: be like I don't know what else to do, and
- 9:51Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, it's to me, it's obvious you do this,
- 9:54Speaker 1: this and this. Yeah, and it gets us through the
- 9:56Speaker 1: to the song. But you know, so it's collaborative in
- 9:59Speaker 1: that way. It's like sometimes we'll just like sit there,
- 10:03Speaker 1: you know, on a zoom call and like just talk
- 10:06Speaker 1: about a song. Nobody's got an instrument at all, and
- 10:09Speaker 1: we just like kind of talk about it, and that's
- 10:11Speaker 1: how the songs get written. Yeah, so yeah, some of it.
- 10:16Speaker 1: But sometimes, you know, Brody'll just like write a whole
- 10:18Speaker 1: song and it's just like like American Death was just
- 10:21Speaker 1: like pretty much bang, Like there, it's done. You know.
- 10:24Speaker 1: I think I had a couple of little tweaks, but
- 10:27Speaker 1: usually the first half of a record it's like it's
- 10:29Speaker 1: really collaborative. And then usually like halfway in, Brody like
- 10:33Speaker 1: kind of gets the vibe and he just starts like, yeah,
- 10:36Speaker 1: like this is what happens next.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, definitely, And so do you want to tell
- 10:40Speaker 2: us a little bit more then about with this new album,
- 10:43Speaker 2: the sort of themes behind it or how the songs
- 10:46Speaker 2: came about.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Yeah, the uh, it's the songs all seem to just
- 10:52Speaker 1: sort of like it was just like one day it
- 10:54Speaker 1: was just like bam, They're all They're all done, and
- 10:57Speaker 1: I was just like whoa what, Like they're like how
- 10:59Speaker 1: did this happened? And like we were just you know,
- 11:01Speaker 1: we were just talking about them, like texting back and
- 11:03Speaker 1: forth about these little snippets of songs and discussing them,
- 11:06Speaker 1: and then all of a sudden, it was like, Pam,
- 11:09Speaker 1: there's tenned these things, okay, Like and then like so
- 11:13Speaker 1: I'm I I just started doing my thing where I'll
- 11:16Speaker 1: like go for a run or something and I'll just
- 11:18Speaker 1: I'll just be listening to the demos constantly and just
- 11:21Speaker 1: thinking about them. And and so it's just and it's
- 11:27Speaker 1: a lot of times it's just whatever wherever I'm at
- 11:30Speaker 1: in my life. Uh, it becomes sort of the theme
- 11:33Speaker 1: and like it's it's the theme of this one is
- 11:36Speaker 1: just like sort of reflecting on like this sort of
- 11:42Speaker 1: macro danger of modern life. Like it's like there's just
- 11:46Speaker 1: always some sort of threat of threat of a world
- 11:50Speaker 1: war or something there's like, uh, you know, there's there's
- 11:55Speaker 1: killer viruses and you know, political upheaval and people not
- 12:00Speaker 1: trusting foundational things anymore. And so the album has a
- 12:05Speaker 1: lot of like a lot of tones of you know
- 12:09Speaker 1: that that and like paranoia and uh maybe a fear
- 12:14Speaker 1: of death you know, to to a certain degree, like
- 12:17Speaker 1: from from all of these things. And it's it's I
- 12:22Speaker 1: feel like they it's not like in previous albums, maybe
- 12:26Speaker 1: we've had sort of this story that's happening, so like
- 12:29Speaker 1: this song leudes to this song, and like there's like
- 12:32Speaker 1: a series of events, but this this one feels like
- 12:36Speaker 1: a little more you know, like they I feel like
- 12:38Speaker 1: they come from us the same perspective, the same you know,
- 12:44Speaker 1: reflection of what modern life is like and you know,
- 12:49Speaker 1: in in my experience anyway, and you know what I
- 12:53Speaker 1: can tell from those around me. But yeah, it doesn't
- 12:59Speaker 1: like the songs aren't really relating to each other so much.
- 13:03Speaker 1: It's they all kind of have their own their own
- 13:06Speaker 1: touches and you know, and they're they're their own individual things,
- 13:12Speaker 1: but I feel like they come from the same like
- 13:14Speaker 1: kind of more moral background or something. They have like
- 13:17Speaker 1: a tie that you know, like a hope for hopeful
- 13:22Speaker 1: positivity sort of amongst a lot of like weird chaos.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, no, it's well, it's definitely a very current
- 13:30Speaker 2: feeling amongst a lot of people, I think, with everything
- 13:34Speaker 2: going on in the political political sphere and more. But
- 13:38Speaker 2: you're saying that there's kind of you guys are injecting
- 13:41Speaker 2: some sort of positivity into that. Is that correct?
- 13:44Speaker 1: Yeah? I mean, I mean, I guess listening to it,
- 13:48Speaker 1: I feel like there's maybe that focus on the despair
- 13:50Speaker 1: of it. But it's not like it's it's not like
- 13:54Speaker 1: saying it's a good thing. Like it's sort of you
- 13:56Speaker 1: know that there's a you know, a lot of these
- 13:58Speaker 1: pitfalls and modern life, and it's sort of I would
- 14:01Speaker 1: like to think that it's maybe a warning just to
- 14:04Speaker 1: not give into those sorts of things and maybe to
- 14:08Speaker 1: think about the world around you in a little more
- 14:10Speaker 1: of an open way. And you know, it's hard, it's
- 14:16Speaker 1: hard to say, like I'm trying to say what what
- 14:20Speaker 1: I what? I hope you know what I feel on
- 14:22Speaker 1: this album. But there's all you know, it's clouded with
- 14:24Speaker 1: a lot of like a lot of fears and paranoise
- 14:28Speaker 1: and all sorts of things. But I think that that's
- 14:31Speaker 1: a kind of human, you know, human way to look
- 14:34Speaker 1: at it.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, definitely, especially in the climate right now. And
- 14:40Speaker 2: I had listened to the album. I got to listen
- 14:42Speaker 2: to it probably before quite a few people, so that's
- 14:44Speaker 2: really exciting. And I did feel like I noticed there
- 14:47Speaker 2: was some new instruments in there. Is that right? Or
- 14:50Speaker 2: am I just imagining that?
- 14:52Speaker 1: No? No, I think I believe it's the first time
- 14:55Speaker 1: we've incorporated some banjo here and there. Yeah, our the
- 15:02Speaker 1: guy who sells merch for us, Gould, our good friend
- 15:05Speaker 1: Stephan Lopez. He was hanging around the studio. He happens
- 15:09Speaker 1: to be a fantastic manjo player, so he just he
- 15:13Speaker 1: just threw down a little bit here and there and that,
- 15:15Speaker 1: So that was cool. I think as far as new things,
- 15:20Speaker 1: you know, we've had saxophone, but it's a new saxophone
- 15:24Speaker 1: player than normal. And I think I feel like Patty
- 15:28Speaker 1: has a different It has his very really has his
- 15:31Speaker 1: own flavor compared to our previous stuff, which I really like.
- 15:36Speaker 1: And you know, yeah, the rest of it, Yeah, it's
- 15:39Speaker 1: very like we have some cello and some spots, and
- 15:43Speaker 1: you know, I feel like there's parts where we use
- 15:46Speaker 1: the the sort of layered clean vocals is almost a
- 15:50Speaker 1: kind of tech its own instrumental texture. Yeah, but yeah,
- 15:55Speaker 1: it's it's it's a pretty familiar bag of tricks other
- 15:59Speaker 1: outside of maybe banjo and maybe a different a different
- 16:04Speaker 1: keyboard setting here or there. But yeah, yeah, but it's
- 16:08Speaker 1: it's a lot of stuff that we've used before, but
- 16:11Speaker 1: just in different ways.
- 16:12Speaker 2: I feel like, yeah, yeah, totally. I could definitely notice
- 16:15Speaker 2: them coming through. And you mentioned before the saxophone, and
- 16:18Speaker 2: I was like, no, but I know you guys have
- 16:19Speaker 2: had saxophone before, but it must be because it's a
- 16:22Speaker 2: new a new person playing it their own way. That's why.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Yeah. So You's just I think Patrick has a little
- 16:29Speaker 1: darker more like he calls it kind of slurry tone,
- 16:34Speaker 1: like it's it's a little it's a little like smokier
- 16:39Speaker 1: I think is is And I like that. I like
- 16:42Speaker 1: that quality a lot. I've really excited with what Patrick
- 16:47Speaker 1: brought to the to the record on this one.
- 16:49Speaker 2: Yeah, wicked, And I think Brody mentioned but that for
- 16:52Speaker 2: this record he wanted to ensure the songs would hit
- 16:55Speaker 2: hard live before adding any extra elements. How did this
- 17:00Speaker 2: approach changed the writing, the production process compared to your
- 17:03Speaker 2: previous albums.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I think I think we did think
- 17:07Speaker 1: a lot about the play, you know, the way that
- 17:11Speaker 1: these songs would play in a room, more so than
- 17:14Speaker 1: our last two records especially, we kind of I think,
- 17:19Speaker 1: I think on Owls and the work we both of them,
- 17:23Speaker 1: we were at points where we were like, I don't
- 17:25Speaker 1: know if we can play any of this stuff live
- 17:28Speaker 1: because it's so densely you know, orchestrated and stuff. And
- 17:31Speaker 1: then we just didn't really and like we just didn't care.
- 17:34Speaker 1: We were just doing We just did it anyway, and
- 17:37Speaker 1: and like that yields varying results. I think sometimes it's like,
- 17:42Speaker 1: you know, you can really bring a live audience on
- 17:45Speaker 1: a journey with you, and sometimes they're just kind of
- 17:47Speaker 1: like waiting for the next like the next crescendo to happen,
- 17:51Speaker 1: and this I've for this one. I felt like there
- 17:55Speaker 1: was a lot of us, you know, especially after the
- 17:57Speaker 1: last record is being sort of like pretty flowery and
- 18:01Speaker 1: like take it took its time in a lot of spots,
- 18:05Speaker 1: and we play that kind of material live and I
- 18:08Speaker 1: think people were into it. But like at our core
- 18:11Speaker 1: were a metal band, like and you know, even though
- 18:15Speaker 1: we like to explore other territories of it. When we
- 18:18Speaker 1: get up on stage live, it's just like we just
- 18:20Speaker 1: turned into metal cavemen. And so I think writing on
- 18:24Speaker 1: this new album felt more like that, like we were
- 18:28Speaker 1: just looking we're looking for that marsh pit response at
- 18:31Speaker 1: the time around Yeah.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely, So creating songs that you guys sort of
- 18:36Speaker 2: knew live would transpire, well, I suppose.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, using what we learned we've learned so far
- 18:44Speaker 1: to maybe write stuff that I think goes over better
- 18:47Speaker 1: in a room full of like really like excited, sweaty people.
- 18:53Speaker 2: Yeah, that makes sense. And do you have a favorite
- 18:56Speaker 2: memory at all on tour or do you have something
- 19:00Speaker 2: your favorite thing that a fan has given you?
- 19:03Speaker 1: Oh, say, We've gotten a lot of nice letters from fans.
- 19:11Speaker 1: I was just always very surprising, like we you know,
- 19:15Speaker 1: we had we had a really nice letter just delivered
- 19:18Speaker 1: to our green room in Berlin on this last tour
- 19:21Speaker 1: that we did, and it was just like, you know,
- 19:24Speaker 1: for somebody to sit there and type something out for
- 19:26Speaker 1: you and tell it just to tell you how much
- 19:28Speaker 1: they appreciated what it is you do, Like that's that's awesome,
- 19:33Speaker 1: Like I mean, like it just co runs so counter
- 19:36Speaker 1: to like you know, sometimes you can get stuck, you know,
- 19:41Speaker 1: going down a rabbit hole on Reddit and reading things
- 19:45Speaker 1: about you know that people hate about you. It's you know,
- 19:51Speaker 1: I do I'll do that more than I care to
- 19:53Speaker 1: admit maybe, But then you know, like then you get
- 19:55Speaker 1: that letter in your green room and you know, and
- 19:58Speaker 1: it's just like, ah, this is this is what's real,
- 20:00Speaker 1: this is what this really really matters, and that's yeah.
- 20:05Speaker 1: So things like that are always like, you know, mind
- 20:10Speaker 1: blowing and really kind of do keep you keep you
- 20:12Speaker 1: doing this? I feel like, yeah, oh.
- 20:17Speaker 2: Lovely, No, I can resonate with that a little bit.
- 20:20Speaker 2: So I have a YouTube channel and whenever I get
- 20:22Speaker 2: the negative comments, that's what I seem to stew on.
- 20:25Speaker 2: And then when I get that one really lovely positive message,
- 20:28Speaker 2: it's like, this is why I do this. I'm not
- 20:30Speaker 2: the last person. Yeah.
- 20:32Speaker 1: Yeah. The comment sections are tricky too, because like you'll
- 20:35Speaker 1: see like I'll see like walls of just positive stuff,
- 20:39Speaker 1: but it's so it's like brief, it's just like sick,
- 20:43Speaker 1: this is awesome, which anybody typing that out and sending
- 20:46Speaker 1: it is like that's amazing. I can't believe you took
- 20:48Speaker 1: the time to do that, but then you'll get one
- 20:51Speaker 1: like you'll just get like a nagg comment and you'll
- 20:54Speaker 1: and I'm thinking, like this guy sat here and type
- 20:57Speaker 1: that out.
- 20:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I know.
- 21:02Speaker 1: It's fun, you know, and then like, but there's one
- 21:05Speaker 1: versus all that wall of like good stuff, and you'll
- 21:09Speaker 1: think about that forever sometimes. But I don't know, I've
- 21:12Speaker 1: I I kind of try to just turn all of
- 21:14Speaker 1: that into into you know, positive thoughts at this point,
- 21:19Speaker 1: not to do on it too much.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Yeah, good, good and sorry. Do you have a favorite
- 21:27Speaker 2: song you're looking forward to off the new album that
- 21:29Speaker 2: you're excited to play live?
- 21:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I got a couple, honestly, Like I think I
- 21:36Speaker 1: think a few of them are gonna be really fun. Ah,
- 21:43Speaker 1: In particular, Despair Church is definitely. That's one of one
- 21:46Speaker 1: of my favorite songs that maybe we've ever written, So
- 21:49Speaker 1: I like, I'm really stoked for that to do that live.
- 21:55Speaker 1: I feel like we can make make sections of that
- 21:57Speaker 1: sound really cool and huge. Some of them that I'm
- 22:03Speaker 1: a little anxious for because they're tough, but it's fun.
- 22:06Speaker 1: But like song dust Man, it's really hard. But as
- 22:11Speaker 1: you know, that's gonna be Rips is another one of
- 22:14Speaker 1: my favorites. Yeah.
- 22:16Speaker 2: Yeah, it's really complex and there is a few songs,
- 22:18Speaker 2: quite a lot of songs. But you know, I've thought
- 22:21Speaker 2: that about some songs and other albums as well, that
- 22:23Speaker 2: they are really complex, but you guys do manage to
- 22:26Speaker 2: just yeah play them and play them well.
- 22:28Speaker 1: So yeah, I mean, I that's what I focus on
- 22:33Speaker 1: as a musician at this point in my life, is
- 22:34Speaker 1: just just remembering Rivers of Nile riffs. Yeah. It's like
- 22:39Speaker 1: I'm not like out here learning you know, like learning
- 22:43Speaker 1: other people's songs. My job is to be as good
- 22:46Speaker 1: at those songs as possible. So maybe pretty complex. I
- 22:49Speaker 1: could fit a decent amount of it up here for
- 22:51Speaker 1: a while.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Yeah, that's it. And looking ahead, what are your goals
- 22:56Speaker 2: for Rivers of Nil after the release of these self
- 22:59Speaker 2: titled album. Are there any new musical directions or projects
- 23:02Speaker 2: you're considering for the future.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean always looking ahead to you know, yeah,
- 23:10Speaker 1: we're I mean, we're always writing, h We're I would
- 23:13Speaker 1: like to, you know, keep the turnaround pretty tight, and
- 23:16Speaker 1: you know, compared to this one that took four years,
- 23:19Speaker 1: it's just a little more than I would have liked.
- 23:22Speaker 1: So hopefully. I mean, I feel like this album is, like,
- 23:25Speaker 1: you know, it kicks ass, and I think I feel
- 23:27Speaker 1: like it's a bit of a palate cleanser, and I
- 23:29Speaker 1: feel like from from here on we can do some
- 23:31Speaker 1: really interesting, more interesting things. Not I mean, this album,
- 23:36Speaker 1: I feel feels very interesting. But I feel like, you know,
- 23:41Speaker 1: Rivers is kind of getting in this in this groove
- 23:43Speaker 1: where about I feel like maybe about to start getting
- 23:48Speaker 1: really out there, and I would try to kind of
- 23:51Speaker 1: like to get back to that. But yeah, yeah, just
- 23:55Speaker 1: the goals. It's just to keep making this stuff and
- 23:59Speaker 1: making it as good as we possibly can and hoping
- 24:03Speaker 1: that it can take us, you know, wherever in front
- 24:06Speaker 1: of people to play you know.
- 24:10Speaker 2: Yeah, we cold and is there any chatter of an
- 24:14Speaker 2: Australian tool possibly.
- 24:18Speaker 1: We're always on the lookout, you know, for for the right,
- 24:22Speaker 1: for the right behind the scenes you know, offer for that.
- 24:27Speaker 1: You know. We've been twice and we've loved it, and yeah,
- 24:31Speaker 1: we would not hesitate to return as long as it
- 24:35Speaker 1: makes sense. We would love to come over and headline, uh,
- 24:39Speaker 1: you know, and and so we'd like to keep an
- 24:42Speaker 1: eye out on that. But yeah, as of right now, nothing,
- 24:45Speaker 1: hopefully hopefully next year, because this year is get looking
- 24:48Speaker 1: pretty booked. Hopefully next year.
- 24:51Speaker 2: Yeah, oh wicked, we'll we'll hold you to it, but
- 24:55Speaker 2: I know the logistics things side. It can be really hot.
- 24:58Speaker 1: Guise so far away Australia is always in our hearts
- 25:02Speaker 1: and thoughts, so oh god, it'll it'll happen.
- 25:05Speaker 2: Oh lovely, Adam. Thank you so much for your time today.
- 25:08Speaker 1: It's been such a thank you.
