Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: This is Kiss Breakfast.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Everyone's talking about it over the weekend. Jai Arrow running
- 0:06Speaker 2: out with the South Sydney Rabbitohs. They made a new
- 0:09Speaker 2: rule so he could run out for the 100th game.
- 0:12Speaker 2: He is joining us live this morning with his wife, Barina.
- 0:14Speaker 3: Good morning, guys.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Morning. Morning, morning.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Mate, man of the moment, can you tell us, Friday night,
- 0:20Speaker 2: for people that don't know, Right, they changed the rules.
- 0:23Speaker 3: So you ran out for the 99th game last week.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:26Speaker 3: Then Friday night was the 100th game. You got to
- 0:30Speaker 3: go out there. What was that like for you, Jai?
- 0:32Speaker 1: Oh, man, it was really surreal. And, you know, I'm
- 0:38Speaker 1: really grateful for the amount of support that Marina and
- 0:43Speaker 1: I have had. Yeah. While walking out there, I didn't
- 0:50Speaker 1: realize how many young people there was going to be.
- 0:54Speaker 1: And seeing everyone standing, cheering for the last two weeks,
- 1:05Speaker 1: it makes me really emotional. So honest and grateful.
- 1:16Speaker 2: And everyone was there, including Albo. There wouldn't have been
- 1:19Speaker 2: a dry eye in the whole stadium, so it must
- 1:23Speaker 2: have meant so much to you.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Indeed.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Yeah, and what about the Rabbitohs boys, all your mates?
- 1:27Speaker 2: You got to sit there while the game was on.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Did you want to just run out there?
- 1:31Speaker 1: Well, if I could run, I would. But at the moment,
- 1:36Speaker 1: I'm in. I'm 4'9, and I don't want to, but
- 1:41Speaker 1: it is what... and look they're being right they haven't
- 1:49Speaker 1: treated me any different yeah um The courts are better
- 1:54Speaker 1: and everything.
- 1:56Speaker 4: They're just still giving you shit like your footy mates
- 2:00Speaker 4: would be doing, right?
- 2:01Speaker 1: It is relentless. Yeah. And I wouldn't have it any
- 2:05Speaker 1: other way.
- 2:05Speaker 3: Is that the thing? Sorry, mate, is it like you
- 2:08Speaker 3: don't want to be treated differently, right?
- 2:11Speaker 1: No. No. Look, I understand my voice has changed, but
- 2:17Speaker 1: my sense in my mind, Attitude towards everything is still
- 2:27Speaker 1: the same.
- 2:27Speaker 4: You're still the same person, right?
- 2:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm just strong-willedly now.
- 2:32Speaker 4: Yeah, of course.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Like an idiot.
- 2:35Speaker 4: And what about Coach Wayne Bennett? Did he.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Oh, you gave him a hug?
- 2:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:40Speaker 3: He held your hand as well. What does he mean
- 2:43Speaker 3: to you?
- 2:43Speaker 1: Yeah. Everything. I think, you know, Wayne was, you know, one.
- 2:48Speaker 1: who came up with the idea, and I thought he
- 2:52Speaker 1: was drunken. Yeah. And when he came to me and said,
- 2:56Speaker 1: you're doing it, I went, yeah, right, I'm doing it. Yeah.
- 3:00Speaker 1: And then, what he means to me, though, he was
- 3:04Speaker 1: my first coach in the RO. Yeah. And I thought
- 3:09Speaker 1: it would be fitting that he was the one to
- 3:13Speaker 1: tell me off. Yeah. And, It means a lot to
- 3:18Speaker 1: me and for him to want to do that for me.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Really honored.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Really honored.
- 3:28Speaker 4: That's so special. And I think it just goes to
- 3:32Speaker 4: show when you were part of a team and you're
- 3:36Speaker 4: going through something like this and they all just rally
- 3:38Speaker 4: behind you.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:40Speaker 4: And you've got the support of your coach, your team,
- 3:42Speaker 4: all the Rabbitohs fans.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Everything. The whole country.
- 3:46Speaker 4: The whole country is backing.
- 3:47Speaker 1: You, yeah.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Everyone was watching on Friday night.
- 3:50Speaker 4: I don't think there was a dry eye in the country.
- 3:52Speaker 2: No, and people that don't even follow rugby league were in. Barina,
- 3:55Speaker 2: last time we had you guys in here, it was
- 3:58Speaker 2: really fresh.
- 3:59Speaker 3: She's giving her a noogie. It was really fresh.
- 4:02Speaker 4: Still just an annoying husband, yes.
- 4:05Speaker 2: The diagnosis was really fresh. Can you give us an update?
- 4:08Speaker 2: How is Jai doing and how are you guys doing?
- 4:10Speaker 5: Yeah, from last time that we came in here. I
- 4:13Speaker 5: think it's gotten a little bit worse. He's progressed. He's
- 4:16Speaker 5: started to have, he's got his M & D laugh.
- 4:19Speaker 3: What's the M & D laugh?
- 4:21Speaker 5: Well, in awkward situations, not even in awkward situations, but,
- 4:24Speaker 5: you know, I'll be having a moment where I'm crying and,
- 4:28Speaker 5: you know, thinking of the future and stuff, and he'll
- 4:30Speaker 5: just burst out into laughter. It helps.
- 4:34Speaker 4: That helps.
- 4:35Speaker 5: That really does help.
- 4:36Speaker 1: That is magnificent. It's a really good moment.
- 4:39Speaker 5: Good side effect, guys.
- 4:41Speaker 1: I think I heard.
- 4:44Speaker 3: About this one.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 4:47Speaker 5: Go on.
- 4:48Speaker 3: You can say it.
- 4:49Speaker 1: No.
- 4:49Speaker 4: No?
- 4:50Speaker 3: No, not for the morning.
- 4:51Speaker 4: He's like, tell him, babe.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Tell him.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Okay, all right.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Your orgasms. Oh, no.
- 4:57Speaker 3: So that's what we heard. They're better. Are they better?
- 5:00Speaker 1: Like, unbelievable. Unbelievable. Poor Marina. Yeah, poor Marina.
- 5:05Speaker 3: I mean, it's a good sign.
- 5:06Speaker 5: I wasn't expecting a redo of it. Yeah.
- 5:09Speaker 4: Well, listen, there's a positive in there somewhere, right? Yeah, right.
- 5:13Speaker 4: Great orgasms.
- 5:14Speaker 3: For him, not necessarily. Correct.
- 5:17Speaker 4: But, Marina, can I ask, obviously, Jai is still in
- 5:21Speaker 4: there and he still is lovable, you know, self and
- 5:25Speaker 4: he's still the guy that you met. But I can imagine,
- 5:29Speaker 4: you know, being married to a man with this condition
- 5:33Speaker 4: and you know, you know, the impending future and what
- 5:35Speaker 4: that's going to look like. Are you okay? Like how
- 5:40Speaker 4: have you been?
- 5:40Speaker 5: I think every day I'm just taking it as it comes.
- 5:45Speaker 5: I don't want to think about the future. I like
- 5:49Speaker 5: to be prepared. That's just how I am. I like
- 5:52Speaker 5: to make sure all my ducks in a row and
- 5:54Speaker 5: for the first time in my life, I'm like, you
- 5:56Speaker 5: know what, let it go.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:58Speaker 4: You can't control it, right? So you just got to
- 6:00Speaker 4: take each day. And what about your daughter? How old
- 6:03Speaker 4: is she?
- 6:03Speaker 5: She's 17 months today. Oh, what? I can't.
- 6:08Speaker 4: So she's probably not, she's probably none the wiser of
- 6:12Speaker 4: what's going on.
- 6:13Speaker 1: No, I mean. No, of course.
- 6:15Speaker 5: But she does clue in on certain things. We get
- 6:18Speaker 5: a nurse to come to the house to do treatment
- 6:21Speaker 5: for Jai, to distribute Adaravan, this drug that's supposed to
- 6:26Speaker 5: help patients with MND.
- 6:28Speaker 3: Okay.
- 6:29Speaker 5: And it's through an infusion. And so when she sees
- 6:32Speaker 5: the nurse kind of poking him in with a needle
- 6:34Speaker 5: and stuff like that, She does start to cry, so
- 6:38Speaker 5: I try to kind of keep her away from that.
- 6:41Speaker 5: But other than that, no, she's got no clue, which
- 6:44Speaker 5: is a good thing.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Do you find that helps? Like, how do you feel, Joe?
- 6:49Speaker 1: I feel all right, yeah.
- 6:50Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 6:51Speaker 1: My physical aspect of me is fine. Okay. Apart from
- 6:57Speaker 1: my voice and my left. Your left eye, yeah. I
- 7:02Speaker 1: am somewhat normal. Yeah. Yeah. I feel really good. Yeah.
- 7:06Speaker 4: And, and does the, does your condition kind of, I mean,
- 7:09Speaker 4: obviously it would affect your parenting day to day style.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
- 7:13Speaker 4: Marina, have you got some support? Have you got help?
- 7:16Speaker 4: You don't have any family here, do you?
- 7:18Speaker 1: No, no.
- 7:18Speaker 5: My family sadly is in Canada as much as they
- 7:21Speaker 5: would love to be here. Um, my grandma's actually got
- 7:24Speaker 5: some pretty severe dementia as well. So they're kind of
- 7:27Speaker 5: dealing with that and, It sucks for them and they
- 7:30Speaker 5: would love to be here. But at the same time,
- 7:32Speaker 5: I've had such a good support network here from all
- 7:35Speaker 5: the players, wives and girlfriends. Like they have been delivering
- 7:38Speaker 5: food to us weekly and making things for Isla, for myself,
- 7:42Speaker 5: for Jai.
- 7:43Speaker 4: You kind of built your own village here, right?
- 7:45Speaker 5: And we do have a village, I would say. We're
- 7:47Speaker 5: pretty lucky here that we do have that.
- 7:49Speaker 4: So important.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:51Speaker 2: All right, well, stick around. More coming up with Jai
- 7:53Speaker 2: and Barina Arrow. We may have a.
- 7:55Speaker 3: Little surprise for you as well, okay?
- 7:58Speaker 2: So stay right there. You're listening to KISS, 20 past 7,
- 8:02Speaker 2: the time right now. And he is joining us today,
- 8:04Speaker 2: Jai Arrow. Barina Arrow, his wife, is in here as
- 8:07Speaker 2: well after that 100th game with the Rabbitohs on Friday night,
- 8:11Speaker 2: hanging out this morning. And you were talking, guys, Barina,
- 8:15Speaker 2: all your family's in Canada, right?
- 8:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:17Speaker 3: Have they come out recently or.
- 8:19Speaker 5: No, so we went overseas for the World Cup and
- 8:23Speaker 5: that was in New York. And so we got lucky
- 8:25Speaker 5: enough to be able to get that experience in the
- 8:27Speaker 5: first place. And then went over to Toronto where my
- 8:30Speaker 5: parents are living currently, which is about an hour flight.
- 8:33Speaker 5: So we got to see them recently, but it was
- 8:35Speaker 5: only for two days.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Okay, yeah.
- 8:38Speaker 5: Yeah, so they haven't been able to come out here enough.
- 8:41Speaker 4: Yeah. And so you guys, obviously, it was Father's Day yesterday,
- 8:46Speaker 4: your little lady, Isla. How did you guys spend Father's Day?
- 8:51Speaker 1: Well, I slept in.
- 8:57Speaker 3: You slept in.
- 8:57Speaker 4: Yes. Nice.
- 8:58Speaker 3: We went down to.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Dinner. Dinner. Yeah, nice.
- 9:19Speaker 4: I feel like most people on like Mother's Day or
- 9:23Speaker 4: Father's Day, they say, you know, what do you want?
- 9:26Speaker 4: Most parents just want to be left alone. It's like
- 9:28Speaker 4: a day off parenting, right? I'm sure it was no
- 9:32Speaker 4: different for you.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Has the attention been overwhelming and are you guys looking
- 9:36Speaker 2: forward to maybe just some downtime?
- 9:38Speaker 1: Downtime.
- 9:39Speaker 5: Yeah, I think once the season's over.
- 9:41Speaker 3: Yeah. Rabbit-o's might be in there.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Hey. Yeah?
- 9:45Speaker 3: Might have to run out again, mate.
- 9:46Speaker 1: They will. Yeah? Yeah.
- 9:49Speaker 5: Once the season's over, you know, we're going to go
- 9:52Speaker 5: overseas for our wedding and treatment for him as well.
- 9:57Speaker 5: So we're going to be in Cyprus for two weeks
- 9:59Speaker 5: for him. Okay.
- 10:00Speaker 3: That treatment? Is it a specialist in Cyprus?
- 10:03Speaker 5: So it's called Sozo Clinic and they're like a neuro
- 10:05Speaker 5: clinic over in Cyprus. They actually have a team here
- 10:08Speaker 5: in Melbourne as well. It's quite new. The machines that
- 10:11Speaker 5: they brought into Australia, they brought in this year as well.
- 10:14Speaker 5: But the head doctor that's trained the team here in
- 10:16Speaker 5: Australia is actually based in Cyprus.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Okay. And so I am neuromodulation thing, yeah. So it'll
- 10:26Speaker 1: be interesting.
- 10:27Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah. So there's hope there, right? There's treatments available.
- 10:31Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 10:32Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 10:33Speaker 4: And you would throw everything at anything, right?
- 10:35Speaker 3: Which is what I'm sure you guys are.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Oh, everything and anything. Yeah.
- 10:39Speaker 4: Jai, do you worry that there are things... In life
- 10:43Speaker 4: that you may miss out on? Are they obviously watching
- 10:46Speaker 4: your daughter grow up? Is there anything else that.
- 10:52Speaker 1: I think for me, at the moment, no.
- 10:55Speaker 5: I don't... Yeah, I don't think we want to think
- 11:05Speaker 5: of those things. You know, I think that's... And when
- 11:09Speaker 5: anyone does ask, you know, how you guys are doing, like, we,
- 11:11Speaker 5: as you guys said before, like, we want to be normal.
- 11:14Speaker 5: We want to feel like... this isn't like a cloud
- 11:16Speaker 5: over our head.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:18Speaker 3: Has that been hard?
- 11:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:19Speaker 3: Is that one of the hardest things?
- 11:21Speaker 2: Because obviously there's great stuff going on where you're doing
- 11:23Speaker 2: things with the Romanos and everyone's behind you and you
- 11:26Speaker 2: feel like the country is supporting you. But is there
- 11:28Speaker 2: a part where you're like, oh, this attention is a lot?
- 11:30Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely.
- 11:31Speaker 5: And, you know, everyone's coming out of the kindness of
- 11:34Speaker 5: their own heart and wants to know, you know, how
- 11:37Speaker 5: we're doing. And, you know, the honest answer is we're struggling.
- 11:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:40Speaker 5: Mentally, physically, emotionally, every day. But we don't want to
- 11:44Speaker 5: wake up every day, especially for our daughter, and not
- 11:46Speaker 5: have those days where we're maximizing our time together and
- 11:50Speaker 5: being positive and making memories as a family and just...
- 11:55Speaker 5: kind of putting this dark cloud in the background a
- 11:58Speaker 5: little bit.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Nailed it. Nailed it.
- 12:00Speaker 4: She really did.
- 12:02Speaker 2: Well, what we thought would be nice is we want
- 12:05Speaker 2: to send you guys to Canada. Yes, we are going
- 12:09Speaker 2: to send you there. You, the three of you, so
- 12:11Speaker 2: your daughter as well.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Oh, wow.
- 12:13Speaker 2: Yep, over to Vancouver in December. on return business class flights,
- 12:19Speaker 2: all thanks to our friends at United Airlines. You guys
- 12:22Speaker 2: deserve the break and you have a lot going on.
- 12:24Speaker 2: So you are off to Canada to see the family.
- 12:27Speaker 4: And you get to see your family for longer than
- 12:29Speaker 4: two days.
- 12:29Speaker 5: Oh, thank you, guys.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Stop it.
- 12:34Speaker 2: We hope you enjoy that and you really need some
- 12:37Speaker 2: family time, right?
- 12:37Speaker 4: So deserving.
- 12:38Speaker 3: It'll be cold, though.
- 12:41Speaker 4: It'll be freezing.
- 12:42Speaker 3: So, you know, think of that. And the footy season
- 12:44Speaker 3: will be over.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Rainy.
- 12:46Speaker 3: Enjoy, guys.
- 12:47Speaker 2: All thanks to, like I said, United Airlines, Snowy Peak,
- 12:50Speaker 2: Vibrant Cities. Discover Canada your way with United Airlines. You
- 12:54Speaker 2: can book now at united.com. You guys are going there
- 12:57Speaker 2: in December. Thank you so much for coming in. And
- 12:59Speaker 2: good luck with it all. And hopefully after the footy
- 13:01Speaker 2: season dies down, you guys can just have some rest.
- 13:04Speaker 3: And some normality.
- 13:06Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Apart from going to Canada, which you're going.
- 13:08Speaker 4: Yes, enjoy Canada, guys. Enjoy business class as well.
- 13:12Speaker 5: Thank you, guys.
- 13:12Speaker 1: So nice.
- 13:13Speaker 3: So nice to see you.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Jaya Barina, thanks a lot, guys. It's 28 past 7
- 13:17Speaker 2: right now here on KISS.
