- 0:00Speaker 1: We get so caught up in what someone should look like,
- 0:03Speaker 1: or what a religious person might sound like, or I mean,
- 0:06Speaker 1: what someone with curly hair acts like, what a black
- 0:08Speaker 1: person should do, what a wife. We get so caught
- 0:10Speaker 1: up in these stereotypes, and it's important that we break
- 0:13Speaker 1: those stereotypes down.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Hang Hurdlers. Emily Abadi bringing you another installment of Hurdle,

- 1:23Speaker 2: first Up is one of my all time favorites with
- 1:27Speaker 2: Ali Love. She is a Peloton instructor founder of Love Squad,
- 1:31Speaker 2: and we'll get into what that is in today's episode.
- 1:34Speaker 2: As well as a total boss lately, I have just
- 1:39Speaker 2: so so, so so much appreciated Ali's perspective and positivity
- 1:44Speaker 2: and openness with her community, and you can check her
- 1:47Speaker 2: out over on Instagram. Her handle is at Ali Miss Love.
- 1:51Speaker 2: That's a l L y msslov e what you need
- 1:58Speaker 2: to know about Ali. She is a do it all
- 2:02Speaker 2: kind of woman. In today's episode, she tells me all
- 2:05Speaker 2: about the hurdle moment which framed her I can mindset,
- 2:09Speaker 2: a horrifying car accident at age nine which landed her
- 2:13Speaker 2: in critical condition with a broken femur. We talked about
- 2:17Speaker 2: how she came back from the unthinkable, rising up as
- 2:21Speaker 2: a dancer and making her mark on New York City.
- 2:24Speaker 2: She tells me about how she discovered her voice with
- 2:26Speaker 2: the help of hosting classes, the three books that she
- 2:30Speaker 2: read to help guide her in her career, and the
- 2:33Speaker 2: unexpected text message that landed her in the saddle at Peloton.
- 2:38Speaker 2: If you are looking for a little motivation to go
- 2:40Speaker 2: after your passion, seriously, look no further. Allie is a
- 2:44Speaker 2: ball of energy and she just wants to empower you.
- 2:47Speaker 2: To be everything you dream of being and more. Allie
- 2:52Speaker 2: also wanted me to pass along that she is looking
- 2:55Speaker 2: to fill two internship spots. They are unpaid and e
- 2:59Speaker 2: comm intern and a social intern she's hoping to mentor
- 3:04Speaker 2: young women. If this sounds like something that appeals to you,
- 3:08Speaker 2: definitely reach out by emailing high at lovesquad dot com
- 3:12Speaker 2: with the subject line intern. Before we get into the
- 3:15Speaker 2: swing of things, I'm taking a moment to give a

- 3:33Speaker 2: you just love a certain company, whatever it is, I
- 3:37Speaker 2: want to hear about it first. Up, getting a little
- 3:39Speaker 2: risque here with Lysette Lingerie, a traditional lingerie brand based

- 3:59Speaker 2: their platforms. Founder Shiara emailed me and told me that
- 4:02Speaker 2: she was fed up with the industry construct that lingerie
- 4:07Speaker 2: was only to be sexy and for special occasions, and
- 4:10Speaker 2: that was a driving force behind creating her brand. Head

- 5:33Speaker 2: been having more convos than ever, which I didn't know
- 5:38Speaker 2: was really possible with individuals I may not know in
- 5:41Speaker 2: real life, on social media and over email, and especially
- 5:45Speaker 2: when it comes to what's happening in our country. With
- 5:48Speaker 2: that said, I will be the first person, the very
- 5:52Speaker 2: first person, to admit that I don't have all the
- 5:53Speaker 2: answers and I'm not perfect. I am learning and listening,
- 5:58Speaker 2: and I am here again to have in constructive discussions.
- 6:02Speaker 2: And just like I truly believe that black lives matter,
- 6:08Speaker 2: I have no zero tolerance for bullying, So please be
- 6:13Speaker 2: kind to one another. I firmly believe that you inspire
- 6:18Speaker 2: individuals to take action rather than shaming them to say
- 6:21Speaker 2: or do a certain thing. That is when that action sticks,
- 6:25Speaker 2: and that is what.
- 6:26Speaker 1: My goal is.
- 6:28Speaker 2: To inspire lasting change at Emily Abadie at Herdle podcast
- 6:35Speaker 2: always over email at Emily at Hurdle dot us I'm
- 6:39Speaker 2: here for you. We're building, we're moving.
- 6:42Speaker 1: We should be in with that.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Let's get to hurdling today. I'm sitting down with Ali Love.
- 6:57Speaker 2: She is a and that's host. She's the founder and
- 7:02Speaker 2: CEO of the Love Squad. She's an instructor at Peloton
- 7:05Speaker 2: and also an Adidas Global ambassador. Hey Hey, what's up.
- 7:12Speaker 2: I love introducing people with a laundry list of accolades.
- 7:15Speaker 1: It's like I always say, I'm a part of the
- 7:17Speaker 1: slash generation, if not like forging the way for it
- 7:20Speaker 1: where it's like you're this slash, this slash you give
- 7:23Speaker 1: you many things in life.
- 7:25Speaker 2: I think it's fun, especially in the fitness world, when
- 7:27Speaker 2: people start to concept their own ideas and grow businesses
- 7:30Speaker 2: and things. I remember in episode two, I interviewed Alex
- 7:34Speaker 2: Silverfagan and she calls herself a fitness entrepreneur.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Oh, I love her byway, She's exceptional.
- 7:40Speaker 2: A jem. First of all, tell me how did you
- 7:42Speaker 2: get into hosting?
- 7:44Speaker 1: So? Actually, I started off in New York City modeling.
- 7:47Speaker 1: I wanted to be a model, signed with Wilhelmina. After
- 7:49Speaker 1: modeling for a couple of years, it was this moment
- 7:51Speaker 1: where it was just like I want to use my voice.
- 7:53Speaker 1: I love the fact that we're taking photos and I'm
- 7:56Speaker 1: you know, doing these campaigns, but I want to have
- 7:58Speaker 1: a point of view. I want to have a POV
- 8:00Speaker 1: and the only way to do that was to maybe
- 8:01Speaker 1: do commercials where you're like learning to get familiar with
- 8:04Speaker 1: a camera in a different way. And it was from
- 8:06Speaker 1: there I took some classes on camera classes and they
- 8:08Speaker 1: offered hosting as another as to go in tandem with
- 8:12Speaker 1: these commercial classes, and I was just like, Okay, I'm
- 8:15Speaker 1: going I'm taking these. I'm taking all the classes I
- 8:17Speaker 1: can take right now. And it was my first hosting
- 8:19Speaker 1: class that I fell in love when I was like, ah,
- 8:22Speaker 1: this is what I was made to do. I thought
- 8:24Speaker 1: it was me doing like an oil of the late commercial,
- 8:26Speaker 1: like your Skin's clear, you know, like chras like absolutely
- 8:30Speaker 1: favorite teopaste. No, it was me sitting down discussing topics
- 8:34Speaker 1: that were meaningful and learning about people through conversation.
- 8:37Speaker 2: I love that And is that kind of what triggered
- 8:40Speaker 2: you to want to do a lot of the live
- 8:42Speaker 2: events with love Squad and we can also break into
- 8:44Speaker 2: what love Squad is as well.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Yeah, totally. It was one of those things where I
- 8:49Speaker 1: enjoy sitting down having conversation. I think conversation changes people's lives.
- 8:53Speaker 1: It gets your thought processes going. It really puts you
- 8:56Speaker 1: in a position to reconsider or sometimes to consider where
- 8:59Speaker 1: you are your life, and it's a catalyst to many changes,
- 9:02Speaker 1: great changes for most people. And I knew that after
- 9:06Speaker 1: doing this hosting a basic hosting class where I was
- 9:08Speaker 1: just like interviewing fun people on the street as our
- 9:11Speaker 1: end of this hosting class challenge. And it was just
- 9:15Speaker 1: in this moment that I realized, like, Hey, you know what,
- 9:16Speaker 1: there's a lot to have in conversations with people that
- 9:19Speaker 1: are doing things in their lives, both personally and professionally.
- 9:22Speaker 1: And it's one of those things that when Love Squad
- 9:24Speaker 1: was birth, it was like, Hey, in order to get
- 9:26Speaker 1: better at hosting, I got to get better at writing.
- 9:28Speaker 1: In order to get better at writing, I got to
- 9:30Speaker 1: get better at like talking to people about the things
- 9:32Speaker 1: that I'm writing about. And so I created love Squad
- 9:35Speaker 1: where we it's an inclusive collective around encouraging and inspiring
- 9:38Speaker 1: and empowering people specifically around things that affect women through conversation,
- 9:42Speaker 1: having those panel discussions, giving tools and tips on how
- 9:46Speaker 1: to be effective in your personal.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Pros And is Love Squad a collective that's obviously New
- 9:50Speaker 2: York City based but nationwide international or how are you
- 9:54Speaker 2: activating in that way?
- 9:55Speaker 1: So we're young, we're Strappie. It's two other women that
- 9:58Speaker 1: work on the team. And yes, we are based in
- 10:00Speaker 1: New York. And since we're a small team and we're
- 10:02Speaker 1: still growing, our hands really reach the backs of New
- 10:05Speaker 1: Yorkers and those that are coming and visiting. We've done
- 10:07Speaker 1: some of it in Chicago. We've done some things. Ideally, Yes,
- 10:11Speaker 1: I would love to think of us as a global brand,
- 10:13Speaker 1: but I don't want to get too big for my
- 10:15Speaker 1: britches in a sense being honest of where we are
- 10:18Speaker 1: and what we do. So, yeah, we're mostly in New
- 10:21Speaker 1: York and I'd say most of North America would know
- 10:23Speaker 1: us a little bit more given the reach of what
- 10:25Speaker 1: I have going on personally.
- 10:26Speaker 2: I love the term you just use. Our hands reached
- 10:29Speaker 2: the backs of New Yorkers. Yes, I'm a fuel that
- 10:32Speaker 2: you know what. I actually got to give a shout out.
- 10:33Speaker 2: That's one of my friends, my friend's Christine. She is
- 10:37Speaker 2: her instagrams, I am, I can't, I will.
- 10:39Speaker 1: I do, And she always says that like, let me
- 10:41Speaker 1: put my hands on your back, and I'm like, please
- 10:43Speaker 1: do them while you're there, massages please.
- 10:45Speaker 2: I love something that you posted a few weeks ago.
- 10:47Speaker 2: You put up this post it that said, put your
- 10:49Speaker 2: ego aside and ask for help. No one has ever
- 10:51Speaker 2: made it to the top alone. Obviously, we just listed
- 10:54Speaker 2: a ton of accolades. You're a busy, busy lady. I
- 10:56Speaker 2: feel you very hard. So is that what you do
- 10:59Speaker 2: when you get overwhelmed? Do you reach out to people?
- 11:01Speaker 2: Do you ask for help? Oh?
- 11:03Speaker 1: Absolutely. One of the things I do often in my
- 11:05Speaker 1: personal life is that I'll take a feedback session, internal
- 11:10Speaker 1: feedback session, take note of like who my friends are,
- 11:13Speaker 1: take note of how I'm spending my time outside of work,
- 11:15Speaker 1: take note of like how's my boyfriend and I doing?
- 11:18Speaker 1: Like how am I doing with my family? And I
- 11:20Speaker 1: kind of ask for feedback from those people that I
- 11:23Speaker 1: am affecting that I'm building relationships with. So I'll ask
- 11:26Speaker 1: my friends, like how do you feel about this relationship?
- 11:28Speaker 1: Like how can I support you better? And then do
- 11:30Speaker 1: the exact same thing I would say bi annually professionally,
- 11:33Speaker 1: I'll reach out to my community at Peloton and say
- 11:36Speaker 1: how can I service you better? What am I doing
- 11:38Speaker 1: that you love? What am I doing that you don't
- 11:39Speaker 1: particularly like? You want a crowd source information about what
- 11:43Speaker 1: you're offering and who you are. And I think that
- 11:45Speaker 1: the same thing goes for love squad. What do you
- 11:48Speaker 1: like at these events? What do you love talking about?
- 11:51Speaker 1: And so when asking for help, I have to ask
- 11:54Speaker 1: for what I'm doing well so I can continue to
- 11:57Speaker 1: do that, but also what I'm not doing well. And
- 11:59Speaker 1: I think when I to a point when I get
- 12:01Speaker 1: that information, I end up reaching out to friends or people.
- 12:05Speaker 1: I always say it's low hanging fruit, not to kind
- 12:07Speaker 1: of make it sound less than what it is, or
- 12:09Speaker 1: reach out to those people that are easy to connect
- 12:11Speaker 1: to you that I may have not connected with yet
- 12:13Speaker 1: and asked them advice. I just sat down with someone
- 12:16Speaker 1: I slid in their DMS who I respect and was like, Hey,
- 12:19Speaker 1: you do a lot of writing, you do a lot
- 12:21Speaker 1: of media. How can I get more people to editors
- 12:25Speaker 1: to write about me? How can I set myself up?
- 12:27Speaker 1: Self up? What are you looking for? And it's one
- 12:29Speaker 1: of those things. In a feedback session that I got
- 12:31Speaker 1: with a friend, was like, you need more press, girl,
- 12:33Speaker 1: people you're working hard people need to know about you.
- 12:36Speaker 1: So again taking that crowdsourcing information that I've crowdsourced that
- 12:41Speaker 1: information and putting it to work and reaching out, sliding
- 12:43Speaker 1: into those dms to say, hey, can you help me?
- 12:46Speaker 1: Because again, yet no one's made it to the top alone, Like.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Have you gotten to a point? Sometimes because I'm sure
- 12:51Speaker 2: when you first started asking for the feedback and sometimes
- 12:54Speaker 2: it was negative, it was hard for you to deal
- 12:56Speaker 2: with it. So how did you kind of flip the
- 12:58Speaker 2: script to be okay with getting that negative feedback and
- 13:01Speaker 2: then proactively doing something about it instead of internalizing it
- 13:05Speaker 2: and maybe feeling kind of hurt about it.
- 13:08Speaker 1: I have to say, it is a skill set. It's
- 13:11Speaker 1: not about getting thicker skin. It's just switching the lens
- 13:14Speaker 1: to which you receive information. You're gonna meet sitting down
- 13:17Speaker 1: with someone, maybe you respect them, maybe you know them,
- 13:19Speaker 1: maybe you don't, and they may be a little brasher
- 13:21Speaker 1: than other people and give it to you straight. But
- 13:23Speaker 1: the reality at the end of the day is this
- 13:25Speaker 1: person's offering time and insight that you didn't have otherwise.
- 13:29Speaker 1: So I look at it as personally, I respect their
- 13:31Speaker 1: time enough to say what they're telling me they've thought about.
- 13:35Speaker 1: And then number two. Oftentimes we hear follow your heart.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Most times I'm confused about that. I'm like, my heart
- 13:41Speaker 1: wants to popel and donuts. I'll follow it. But it's
- 13:44Speaker 1: like knowing the difference of following your heart and getting
- 13:47Speaker 1: feedback that may not be applicable to you at that moment.
- 13:51Speaker 1: So differentiating and distinguishing feedback that you can apply right
- 13:56Speaker 1: now and some things that you may need to just
- 13:58Speaker 1: put a pin in for later. And that's when I
- 14:01Speaker 1: would say yes, in that moment, gut check, take inventory
- 14:05Speaker 1: of where you are physically, emotionally and spiritually where you
- 14:07Speaker 1: want your business or your personal life to go, and
- 14:10Speaker 1: then make sure that that information is applicable at that time.
- 14:13Speaker 2: I also think it's important. So have you ever had
- 14:16Speaker 2: like a typical nine to five job?
- 14:20Speaker 1: Oh, I needed a moment. I did have a college job,
- 14:25Speaker 1: a job in college and it was actually overnight. I
- 14:29Speaker 1: worked at CVS. It was one of my first Yeah,
- 14:31Speaker 1: homegirl had to make a living and talk about hustles real.
- 14:34Speaker 1: I went to Fordham University and I studied. I got
- 14:37Speaker 1: a bachelors in Fine Arts, and through that you have
- 14:38Speaker 1: to do academics and you have to dance, and so
- 14:41Speaker 1: your ballet classes are used ye at seven am in
- 14:43Speaker 1: the morning, sometimes six am. Wow. And you needed to
- 14:46Speaker 1: have a job because you needed to be able to
- 14:48Speaker 1: do school work to pass your classes. You need to
- 14:50Speaker 1: be there for rehearsals for any of the additional dance
- 14:52Speaker 1: pieces that you're part of, and of course your curriculum
- 14:56Speaker 1: for dance. So I needed to make money and the
- 14:58Speaker 1: only other time was to out a little bit of
- 15:00Speaker 1: sleep and work at CBS from eleven to six am.
- 15:04Speaker 2: Oh, I know, it's like a twenty four hour pharmacy
- 15:07Speaker 2: or yeah, wow.
- 15:08Speaker 1: It's kind of like your duane read like your yes.
- 15:10Speaker 1: And so I work the counter there and I would
- 15:13Speaker 1: bring my laptop sit there because obviously it's not as
- 15:15Speaker 1: much traffic at night, and I would sit there doing
- 15:18Speaker 1: writing my papers and waiting, like you know. People would
- 15:20Speaker 1: come in and purchase whatever they're to purchase. I ring
- 15:22Speaker 1: them up for whatever how many hours that was. And
- 15:25Speaker 1: I did that a few days a week because I
- 15:27Speaker 1: needed to make cash. I think that was my closest
- 15:29Speaker 1: to a nine to five and I'm not mad about it.
- 15:32Speaker 2: So again, well, you've been like an entrepreneur for quite
- 15:34Speaker 2: some time is like what I'm trying to get at
- 15:36Speaker 2: here because a lot of people, I think they step
- 15:39Speaker 2: into this path of entrepreneurship are going out on their
- 15:41Speaker 2: own or being our contractor, and they just expect to
- 15:44Speaker 2: have a lot of these insights that you are just
- 15:46Speaker 2: kind of throwing down right now. And what I think
- 15:48Speaker 2: is important to drive home is that it's a lot
- 15:51Speaker 2: of trial on error.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Oh yes, and it's.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Taken you a lot of time to learn and obviously
- 15:58Speaker 2: every single day to grow and to be better. It's
- 16:01Speaker 2: not like it just happens overnight when you're like, I'm
- 16:04Speaker 2: going to go and do all this stuff on my own.
- 16:06Speaker 1: And it doesn't work like that, And I think, yes,
- 16:08Speaker 1: it's one of again quoting a Malcolm Gladwell book, is
- 16:10Speaker 1: like ten thousand hours before you become an overnight success, right,
- 16:13Speaker 1: you have to put in the work. But the reality
- 16:15Speaker 1: of the situation is on those and I set you
- 16:17Speaker 1: birth an idea. I would strongly encourage someone to make
- 16:20Speaker 1: sure every day you're having a meaningful conversation with someone
- 16:22Speaker 1: that you do not know, or reading something that you
- 16:25Speaker 1: haven't read or that you would normally read, of implementing
- 16:29Speaker 1: some advice that you wouldn't normally implement, or you wouldn't
- 16:32Speaker 1: you would in most cases disregard because you don't feel
- 16:36Speaker 1: like it's fitting for you. Trying something new every day
- 16:39Speaker 1: is really important. It's not about just I'm going to
- 16:41Speaker 1: try a new food or I'm going to do bungeon
- 16:42Speaker 1: jumping something like that, but trying something new in terms
- 16:44Speaker 1: of let me read, let me pick up the economists
- 16:47Speaker 1: and read it. Even though my business has nothing to
- 16:49Speaker 1: do with numbers particularly, but hey, growing a business affects
- 16:53Speaker 1: the economy. The economy affects a growing business as an entrepreneur,
- 16:56Speaker 1: so having some of those elements of trying something new
- 16:59Speaker 1: every day does help your business, does help your idea
- 17:02Speaker 1: of potentially creating a business or becoming an entrepreneur. Because
- 17:05Speaker 1: it scary.
- 17:06Speaker 2: Yeah, no, it's it's scary, that's all right. It's like
- 17:08Speaker 2: I get a political newsletter in my inbox every day
- 17:11Speaker 2: and I only subscribed to the first time because a
- 17:14Speaker 2: man that I went to summer camp with when we
- 17:16Speaker 2: were like eight is one of the names on the masthead,
- 17:18Speaker 2: and I'm like, oh, I'll subscribe to this newsletter. I
- 17:20Speaker 2: read it every day on the subway. I know, like
- 17:22Speaker 2: twenty percent of what actually any of the means, and
- 17:25Speaker 2: I'm like better for it, Like maybe I'll learn something,
- 17:28Speaker 2: maybe I'll start to understand something that I didn't know before.
- 17:31Speaker 2: A politics. Man, it's a tough world out there. It's
- 17:34Speaker 2: a tough world out there. Okay. So what I'd love
- 17:36Speaker 2: to do with you now that we've gotten so many
- 17:39Speaker 2: good nuggets of wisdom in the first ten minutes is
- 17:41Speaker 2: to kind of dial it back and hear a little
- 17:43Speaker 2: bit more about where you come from and then how
- 17:45Speaker 2: you you know you mentioned going to Fordham, so how
- 17:48Speaker 2: we even got there? So where did you grow up?
- 17:50Speaker 1: I grew up in Miami, Florida, three h five all day,
- 17:52Speaker 1: super proud of it all day. Yes, yeah, I grew
- 17:55Speaker 1: up there.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Okay. And did you always know that you wanted to
- 17:59Speaker 2: go to school and relocates New York?
- 18:02Speaker 1: I always knew that I wanted to become a New
- 18:04Speaker 1: Yorker absolutely, so growing up before I became a dancer,
- 18:08Speaker 1: I got hit by a car at the age of
- 18:10Speaker 1: nine years old and broke my left femur and almost died.
- 18:12Speaker 1: So I was in a hospital and I remember like
- 18:15Speaker 1: the doctor was like, oh, she'll never really run telling
- 18:17Speaker 1: my parents like she'll walk, but she will never be
- 18:19Speaker 1: as an athlete, Like, so make sure you're positioning her
- 18:23Speaker 1: for a lane of success that's possible. So almost I
- 18:27Speaker 1: came out of the hospital seven days later, and the
- 18:29Speaker 1: next summer of my mom's best friend put her daughter
- 18:32Speaker 1: into this summer camp where they offered dance, and I
- 18:34Speaker 1: was like, I want to get into that summer camp.
- 18:36Speaker 1: And I was home school for a year, so I
- 18:37Speaker 1: was really in need of socializing at the age of ten,
- 18:41Speaker 1: and so I went in this summer camp they offered dance.
- 18:43Speaker 1: I started dancing. Nothing's too serious, and I remember the
- 18:47Speaker 1: teacher was saying, to help my mom at one of
- 18:49Speaker 1: the performances, like your daughter is really talented, and my
- 18:51Speaker 1: mom was like, absolutely not. She has no rhythm. She's
- 18:55Speaker 1: not going to be a dancer. And I was like, actually, Mom,
- 18:58Speaker 1: I love this thing. I want to do it more.
- 19:01Speaker 1: And so when I was younger, every summer after that,
- 19:04Speaker 1: I went to a ballet school where they sent a
- 19:06Speaker 1: group of girls and young boys to New York to
- 19:09Speaker 1: dance to get a scholarship in one of the schools.
- 19:11Speaker 1: So like Alvin Ailey to like dance here of Harlem
- 19:16Speaker 1: sab So I went to dancing of Harlem every summer
- 19:20Speaker 1: growing up up until high school. Throughout high school where
- 19:23Speaker 1: I came here, I lived six weeks in New York,
- 19:25Speaker 1: maybe it was eight weeks in New York with a
- 19:27Speaker 1: group of girls at my age, and we got to
- 19:29Speaker 1: experience New York relatively young, and I fell in love
- 19:32Speaker 1: with the city.
- 19:33Speaker 2: So regardless of running after the accident, you must have
- 19:35Speaker 2: been moving fine.
- 19:37Speaker 1: I was. When my mom said to the dance teacher
- 19:41Speaker 1: that she was not a great dancer. I think at
- 19:43Speaker 1: that moment she was right. I couldn't really move as
- 19:46Speaker 1: well as everyone else. But it was one of those
- 19:49Speaker 1: things where I was super determined. I fell in love
- 19:51Speaker 1: with dance, and I was like, this is what I
- 19:52Speaker 1: want to do for the rest of my life. And
- 19:54Speaker 1: it wasn't a matter of of being the best one
- 19:57Speaker 1: in the class, who or anything like that. It was
- 19:59Speaker 1: just like I loved so much that this was it
- 20:01Speaker 1: for me moving my body, especially when someone said I
- 20:04Speaker 1: would I couldn't, and that I wouldn't. At that age,
- 20:07Speaker 1: I was pretty resilient, and I mean my mom insilled
- 20:09Speaker 1: it in me because I remember laying in the hospital
- 20:12Speaker 1: bed in the hospital and after the accident had just happened,
- 20:15Speaker 1: and I was losing a lot of blood. I might
- 20:16Speaker 1: needed it a blood transfusion, and you know, think about
- 20:19Speaker 1: your parents, like your little girl got hit by a car.
- 20:22Speaker 1: I like a hit by a car, flew up in
- 20:24Speaker 1: the air, landed on the hood of the car, and
- 20:25Speaker 1: rolled off, and my hip was broken, broke my teeth.
- 20:29Speaker 1: It was just one of those things that you don't
- 20:31Speaker 1: see at that age, or just you don't see in life.
- 20:35Speaker 1: And I remember having this conversation. Some things you never
- 20:37Speaker 1: leave you as a kid, as we all know, having
- 20:39Speaker 1: this conversation, and my mom told me, there's nothing I
- 20:41Speaker 1: can do for you at this moment in life. I
- 20:44Speaker 1: wish I could trade places. There's nothing I can do
- 20:46Speaker 1: for you at all. However, there's something you can do
- 20:49Speaker 1: for yourself. And we were religious people and we believe
- 20:51Speaker 1: in God. And she's like, you have to pray to
- 20:52Speaker 1: God to save your life, and you have to trust
- 20:55Speaker 1: him and believe him that he's going to and you
- 20:57Speaker 1: have to have a you need to have a will
- 20:58Speaker 1: to live. So if you want to live, it's possible,
- 21:01Speaker 1: but you are going to need that will and you
- 21:03Speaker 1: have to make that decision. So giving life or death
- 21:05Speaker 1: to a nine year old in a bed after being
- 21:09Speaker 1: going through something that was devastating was a huge responsibility
- 21:13Speaker 1: and undertaking. And it was something that my mom offered me.
- 21:15Speaker 1: And it's something that I will never forget because decisions
- 21:17Speaker 1: like that at nine years old has never left me.
- 21:19Speaker 1: When you come to New York, think about where you
- 21:21Speaker 1: are in life. You have to make huge decisions, and
- 21:23Speaker 1: making decisions aren't easy, and making no decision is still
- 21:27Speaker 1: making a decision. So at nine years old, I had
- 21:29Speaker 1: to make a decision and I never stopped. I never
- 21:31Speaker 1: stopped making that decision to choose the life, so choose
- 21:33Speaker 1: to live.
- 21:34Speaker 2: So choose to live, and then choose to dance. And
- 21:37Speaker 2: so absolutely you knew from those summers coming up to
- 21:40Speaker 2: New York that you wanted to come here as soon
- 21:42Speaker 2: as you got the chance. For a much longer period
- 21:44Speaker 2: of time.
- 21:45Speaker 1: Well, as you can tell, do you speak fast? I
- 21:47Speaker 1: do a lot of things fast, and so does New York.
- 21:50Speaker 1: And I was like, oh, I've found a rhythm that
- 21:52Speaker 1: match is my heartbeat. And I was like, this is
- 21:54Speaker 1: where I belong. I found my tribe of go getters,
- 21:59Speaker 1: of people that are determined that yeah, we get down.
- 22:01Speaker 1: At times, we cry, you know, we eat a lot
- 22:04Speaker 1: of donuts, and then we move on. We boss up
- 22:06Speaker 1: after that, you know, and I think that's that's something
- 22:09Speaker 1: that I truly love about this city.
- 22:10Speaker 2: Yeah, so you did you know you wanted to go
- 22:13Speaker 2: to Fordham or how did that?
- 22:15Speaker 1: I didn't know that I wanted to go to Fordham.
- 22:17Speaker 1: But my mom did the right thing. My parents did
- 22:18Speaker 1: the right thing. My mom and dad was like, you
- 22:20Speaker 1: have to go to college. You can do dance, you
- 22:23Speaker 1: can go be a dancer, you can move to New York,
- 22:24Speaker 1: you can do whatever you want, but one request is
- 22:28Speaker 1: you have to graduate. And they were right. It gave
- 22:30Speaker 1: me a safe haven, a safe bubble to experience a
- 22:33Speaker 1: big city in so you know, you're protected. In college,
- 22:35Speaker 1: you have things to do, their structure, instead of moving
- 22:37Speaker 1: up here alone and saying, oh my god, what do
- 22:39Speaker 1: I do? Do I keep auditioning and things like that.
- 22:42Speaker 1: A lot of people do that and they do very well.
- 22:44Speaker 1: I am very grateful that I.
- 22:45Speaker 2: Went the route of Okay, so in school, when you
- 22:49Speaker 2: move to the big city, what's different when you move
- 22:51Speaker 2: your full time versus when you're coming to like visit.
- 22:54Speaker 2: Does it hit you in this big way that you're like,
- 22:56Speaker 2: oh my god, this is actually my home.
- 22:59Speaker 1: It was the yeah, it hit me that way, but
- 23:01Speaker 1: it was actually the opposite in terms of, OMG, I
- 23:05Speaker 1: have a shot, like this is my shot. I truly
- 23:08Speaker 1: felt when I got I came one way ticket. Your
- 23:12Speaker 1: family drops you off at the airport, tries not to cry.
- 23:15Speaker 1: You're like, mom, stop cry. My dad's the worst. He's
- 23:17Speaker 1: the one that cries the worst. He cried, and he
- 23:22Speaker 1: was just like, you can do this, and I think
- 23:25Speaker 1: you were built for this. And so one way ticket
- 23:28Speaker 1: to New York City came here, and I was just like,
- 23:30Speaker 1: no one's going to stop me. No one's going to
- 23:32Speaker 1: stop me. And I think that no one has I've had.
- 23:35Speaker 1: I've had some rough times like we all have, and
- 23:38Speaker 1: just like being hit by a car, I would never
- 23:40Speaker 1: change that in a million years. But I one of
- 23:43Speaker 1: the things that I always say, like, there's something truly
- 23:46Speaker 1: beautiful and being basic and going back to the basics.
- 23:49Speaker 1: And it's humbling to think of that experience in times
- 23:52Speaker 1: that I'm sad and overwhelmed, and times that I get
- 23:54Speaker 1: those no's and times that I have to start over,
- 23:57Speaker 1: in times where I feel like nothing's working out for me.
- 24:00Speaker 1: When it of course rains, it pours, it floods. I
- 24:03Speaker 1: have to think of that moment of just being grateful,
- 24:05Speaker 1: like there was a moment you could have died and
- 24:07Speaker 1: you're living and yes, it's hard, but you keep pressing forward.
- 24:11Speaker 2: So when you're in college and you're dancing, are you
- 24:13Speaker 2: firm on the idea that you're going to graduate and
- 24:15Speaker 2: do this full time?
- 24:17Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 24:19Speaker 2: Her faces lit up. It was Christmas morning.
- 24:22Speaker 1: I yes, I love dancing. I loved it so much.
- 24:26Speaker 1: It was not until so I had that like, yes,
- 24:29Speaker 1: this is it for me. It was not until I
- 24:33Speaker 1: was about to graduate my senior year and I was
- 24:36Speaker 1: doing like these internships with companies and performing that I
- 24:41Speaker 1: realized how hard and challenging it was to live in
- 24:45Speaker 1: New York City on a dancer's salary. I we need
- 24:51Speaker 1: to change that one two dancers are not wrecking their body,
- 24:57Speaker 1: but putting their body through so any challenges to do
- 25:01Speaker 1: what they love and not being able to afford sometimes
- 25:04Speaker 1: their apartment alone, like you have to have a roommate,
- 25:07Speaker 1: and not all dancers. Everything's different, but for the most part,
- 25:10Speaker 1: once I realized that, I was just like, you know what,
- 25:12Speaker 1: I don't think that I need to. I want to
- 25:14Speaker 1: go down that path of being a starving artist. It
- 25:17Speaker 1: can be fulfilling, but it's not I don't think it
- 25:19Speaker 1: was my lot in life. And so I found I
- 25:22Speaker 1: met someone who was like a friend of mine who
- 25:25Speaker 1: was like, models, make this, this and this. And I
- 25:27Speaker 1: was like, you're telling me that not moving my body
- 25:29Speaker 1: but using my body to take photos not necessarily have
- 25:33Speaker 1: live art, is going to yield me more income to
- 25:36Speaker 1: be able to live in the city and continue to
- 25:38Speaker 1: create the life that I want and to continue to
- 25:40Speaker 1: dance on the side. And they were like yes, And
- 25:42Speaker 1: so I went down the modeling route. I went into
- 25:46Speaker 1: a friend of a friend recommended me. I went into
- 25:48Speaker 1: Ailhelmina and they gave me a contract and it was
- 25:50Speaker 1: one of those things like not that doesn't happen all
- 25:53Speaker 1: the time. But I also reached out to like a
- 25:56Speaker 1: ton of agencies get my research and was like, hey,
- 25:58Speaker 1: I'm this not model, trying to be a model and
- 26:01Speaker 1: make money, and somebody said yes, after really knocking down
- 26:05Speaker 1: a lot of doors, do.
- 26:06Speaker 2: You remember your first modeling job?
- 26:08Speaker 1: Absolutely. I actually went into fitness modeling because one of
- 26:13Speaker 1: the things when you're building a brand and building a business.
- 26:15Speaker 1: One of the things that I didn't realize that I
- 26:17Speaker 1: did at that age, but was great that I did
- 26:20Speaker 1: was find a pocket, find an area and a niche
- 26:22Speaker 1: that worked for me. So I didn't have this dream
- 26:24Speaker 1: of becoming like a Victoria's Secret supermodel, because there was
- 26:28Speaker 1: an aesthetic that went along with that. Whether right or wrong,
- 26:31Speaker 1: there is you know, a way to get there. It's
- 26:33Speaker 1: not impossible. But I knew that because I was a dancer,
- 26:36Speaker 1: I was athletically built. There was a new arise of
- 26:40Speaker 1: athletic modeling, of sports modeling, and I was like, you
- 26:42Speaker 1: know what, this is a this is an area that
- 26:45Speaker 1: I could potentially make a market. It's something I could
- 26:47Speaker 1: potentially flourish at. And so I went in to become
- 26:50Speaker 1: a fitness model and that was how I found my Yes,
- 26:53Speaker 1: it wasn't like I'm going to all of a sudden
- 26:55Speaker 1: it become some high fashion model or hands model or whatever,
- 26:57Speaker 1: which I really want to be one day. But my
- 27:01Speaker 1: first tid I went in. I remember going into it
- 27:03Speaker 1: was my first casting, just got signed to an agency,
- 27:05Speaker 1: went into the agency. There were legit one hundred and
- 27:08Speaker 1: fifty models in this room, stunning people like you walk
- 27:11Speaker 1: in and I was super blonde at the time. I
- 27:13Speaker 1: had big, blonde, curly atro and it was under armor.
- 27:17Speaker 1: And I remember sitting in this meeting and I guess, again,
- 27:19Speaker 1: it's like brandings. Some of the things you think about
- 27:22Speaker 1: you don't think about when branding are so essential. I
- 27:24Speaker 1: went into an area of fitness that I knew that
- 27:26Speaker 1: I could do well in. I sat in that room
- 27:27Speaker 1: and I said, what makes me different than these people
- 27:30Speaker 1: sitting here? Everyone's super nice most of them. People are
- 27:34Speaker 1: probably nervous. Everyone looks good, everyone's a model. What's the
- 27:37Speaker 1: outlier here? What is the one thing they don't expect
- 27:40Speaker 1: from models? And it was to have a great personality.
- 27:43Speaker 1: So I had sat there for an hour and a
- 27:45Speaker 1: half and I was like, I'm going to go into
- 27:46Speaker 1: this meeting and I'm going to be human. I'm going
- 27:48Speaker 1: to introduce myself and talk to them like they're real people.
- 27:51Speaker 1: That's going to sit on the other side of the table.
- 27:53Speaker 1: And I remember walking in into my first casting and
- 27:55Speaker 1: I was like, Hey, everybody, how are you? How are
- 27:58Speaker 1: you doing today? And then I kind of made it.
- 28:00Speaker 1: I was like, I don't know how you are handling
- 28:03Speaker 1: looking at all these beautiful people and making a decision
- 28:05Speaker 1: so like, God bless you, and they started laughing, and
- 28:08Speaker 1: it was that moment. And I will later find out
- 28:11Speaker 1: they became my longest client I've ever had in my career.
- 28:14Speaker 1: I've probably worked for under Armour for five six years
- 28:18Speaker 1: modeling with them, but it helped me live in New
- 28:21Speaker 1: York financially. And I remember having a conversation maybe a
- 28:25Speaker 1: year or two later with those same women who hired me,
- 28:27Speaker 1: and they said, you were different. You walked in, you
- 28:30Speaker 1: had a personality. You looked at us like we were human,
- 28:33Speaker 1: and that's why we wanted to work with you. Everyone
- 28:36Speaker 1: looked beautiful and was fit the type we wanted to
- 28:40Speaker 1: work with, someone who was easy to work with and
- 28:42Speaker 1: that we did enjoy working with.
- 28:43Speaker 2: And I think a lot of the time when people
- 28:44Speaker 2: walk in for some sort of interview that they're like
- 28:47Speaker 2: so scared, and it's hard to put that fear to
- 28:50Speaker 2: the side, and that can also then mask a little
- 28:53Speaker 2: bit of your personality. So to be so open and
- 28:55Speaker 2: just treating them like it's a normal conversation, that's nine
- 28:59Speaker 2: times out to ten again in your situation, especially going
- 29:02Speaker 2: to give you a light up, which is absolutely critical,
- 29:05Speaker 2: all right, So we book under armour and then we
- 29:06Speaker 2: book other things and now we're just modeling and dancing
- 29:10Speaker 2: and where so where are we?
- 29:11Speaker 1: I was dancing for the next I got. I went
- 29:14Speaker 1: to a casting an audition five hundred girls. I wanted
- 29:17Speaker 1: to continue to dance. And while I was trained in
- 29:19Speaker 1: concert dance and it wasn't necessarily trained in like this
- 29:21Speaker 1: commercial world, I went into the audition and booked the
- 29:23Speaker 1: job and it was about twenty two women on the team.
- 29:26Speaker 1: Was amazing because I created friends once I was out
- 29:29Speaker 1: of college, created friends during college and out of college,
- 29:34Speaker 1: and lifelong friends from there. And then I was performing
- 29:37Speaker 1: at Madison Square Garden, one of the biggest stages in
- 29:39Speaker 1: the world, one of the best arenas in the world,
- 29:41Speaker 1: and that too afforded me an opportunity to do what
- 29:43Speaker 1: I love, continue to model because the games were at night,
- 29:46Speaker 1: continue to model and shoot during the day and make
- 29:49Speaker 1: some money. So I found that that was a hybrid.
- 29:51Speaker 1: And during that time I would dance for Beyonce, I
- 29:53Speaker 1: danced with Pitbull, I danced with Why Cleth. I would
- 29:56Speaker 1: pick up these odd jobs commercially dancing doing what I loved.
- 29:59Speaker 2: Wow, Yeah, what was it? Like to dance with Beyonce.
- 30:03Speaker 1: It home speechless, given that is how songs you write.
- 30:07Speaker 1: But I've never one of the things that I remember
- 30:10Speaker 1: being in a room with her, having a one on
- 30:12Speaker 1: one with her and the choreographer. Choreographer and watching Beyonce
- 30:17Speaker 1: work is unlike anything I've ever seen. She came in
- 30:21Speaker 1: the room in the morning at eight am and didn't leave.
- 30:23Speaker 1: This is by herself. She didn't leave the rehearsal space
- 30:26Speaker 1: and until like eleven o'clock at night rehearsing. And it
- 30:30Speaker 1: wasn't like we stopped for lunch. It wasn't she ate,
- 30:32Speaker 1: but it was like, oh, someone brought in food. She
- 30:35Speaker 1: ate and she got back and it was like quite
- 30:37Speaker 1: like she I've never seen someone so hard working in
- 30:42Speaker 1: a personal space that up close in my life.
- 30:45Speaker 2: It's really special, very special. And it's like when someone
- 30:47Speaker 2: you can see truly brings like makes their passion their purpose.
- 30:52Speaker 2: And I'm sure you can relate to that in so
- 30:53Speaker 2: many levels with what you're doing with the Love Squad,
- 30:56Speaker 2: but it's like when you see that in someone, you
- 30:58Speaker 2: see like the light in their eyes and so much
- 31:00Speaker 2: different than someone that's just going through their day to
- 31:02Speaker 2: day on autopilot.
- 31:04Speaker 1: And I mean she allowed me in that space with
- 31:07Speaker 1: her as a young woman. Like as a young girl
- 31:09Speaker 1: trying to create my career. She could have been like, no,
- 31:11Speaker 1: I just need the choreographer. She was like, no problem,
- 31:13Speaker 1: Like Ali can come in. It was just like she
- 31:16Speaker 1: was human. It was that human, approachable element of Beyonce
- 31:20Speaker 1: that also gave me that wow factor of her. And
- 31:23Speaker 1: that's something that I do try to remind and how
- 31:26Speaker 1: I navigate Love Squad. It's that approachability. No matter how
- 31:29Speaker 1: big we are, we need women to sit on a
- 31:31Speaker 1: stage and give you those tools and concepts that you
- 31:34Speaker 1: can and how to most importantly, how to do some
- 31:37Speaker 1: things so that we can help other women and other
- 31:41Speaker 1: people in general find their path and continue to create
- 31:44Speaker 1: their space. I think.
- 31:45Speaker 2: And that's a really important note to hit on as well.
- 31:47Speaker 2: It's like, how can I help build up other people?
- 31:49Speaker 2: And how can I offer what I know to enrich
- 31:53Speaker 2: somebody else. It's never a going to be about oh
- 31:56Speaker 2: well if I offer this to someone then they might
- 31:58Speaker 2: do X, Y Z. Well you're looking at it the
- 32:00Speaker 2: wrong way. Then it's like, all right, I'm willing and
- 32:03Speaker 2: ready to help someone else, not because I'm necessarily looking
- 32:06Speaker 2: for anything in return or scared of what they might
- 32:08Speaker 2: do with that intel. I'm doing it because I know
- 32:10Speaker 2: that I have the opportunity to do so that's so powerful.
- 32:14Speaker 1: It's a gift, and it reminds me I'm going to
- 32:17Speaker 1: really break like butcher this a little bit. But there's
- 32:19Speaker 1: like some parable in the Bible where like God gives
- 32:22Speaker 1: this guy some talents and he instead of using the talents,
- 32:25Speaker 1: he buries the talents, and it's when you bury the talent,
- 32:28Speaker 1: you are talentless. And then he gives other talents to
- 32:31Speaker 1: another person, another guy, and he uses those talents and
- 32:34Speaker 1: from using those talents, he gains greater talents. So his
- 32:38Speaker 1: talents only multiply and he creates a life for himself.
- 32:41Speaker 1: And I think that that is the reality helping others.
- 32:43Speaker 1: The art of helping others. Is that a true art?
- 32:46Speaker 1: And the more you help others and get information out there,
- 32:49Speaker 1: the more your talents will increase. The more you know,
- 32:52Speaker 1: opportunity said you get from that.
- 32:54Speaker 2: So let's talk about adding to the talent roster for
- 32:57Speaker 2: you then, because you're modeling and you're dancing with the
- 33:00Speaker 2: next and then when does fitness become an even bigger
- 33:05Speaker 2: part of your life.
- 33:06Speaker 1: It's the moment that everything gets hard. It was the
- 33:12Speaker 1: moment where, at this time, a part of what I
- 33:14Speaker 1: was doing I kept my night job, not necessarily at CVS,
- 33:17Speaker 1: but I also did bottle waitressing in New York City.
- 33:20Speaker 1: I kept the night hustle. It continued, like outside of
- 33:24Speaker 1: modeling and then dancing for the Knicks, I was a
- 33:26Speaker 1: bottle waitress. I was able to kind of like stack
- 33:28Speaker 1: my paper and make sure I was living a comfortable
- 33:31Speaker 1: life to continue to pursue the things I loved. But
- 33:33Speaker 1: it came to a point in my life where you
- 33:35Speaker 1: can no longer and I'm sure some people can identify
- 33:38Speaker 1: that are listening. You get to a point in your
- 33:40Speaker 1: life and you're like, why am I doing this? And
- 33:41Speaker 1: you no longer have an answer, and if you don't,
- 33:44Speaker 1: you can't answer the questions of why and how when
- 33:46Speaker 1: it comes to what you're doing in life and who
- 33:48Speaker 1: you are. That's a moment you got to stop. So
- 33:50Speaker 1: I had to make the decision where I stopped dancing
- 33:53Speaker 1: for the Knicks. I had to make the decision where
- 33:56Speaker 1: I stopped bottle waitressing. And it was a moment where
- 33:59Speaker 1: I wasn't doing anything. I was still modeling, but as
- 34:02Speaker 1: you know, modeling seasonal, so there were weeks where I'd
- 34:05Speaker 1: have one casting, some that i'd have none, you know.
- 34:07Speaker 1: So it was one of those moments where I had
- 34:09Speaker 1: a lot of time on my hands. I was confused
- 34:11Speaker 1: on what I wanted in life, who I was, And
- 34:14Speaker 1: there's a difference between being busy and being productive, and
- 34:18Speaker 1: I knew that, and I had to take a moment
- 34:20Speaker 1: where I was saying, there's no longer, this isn't the
- 34:23Speaker 1: season to continue to be busy. I need to produce.
- 34:26Speaker 1: I need to be productive, and the only way to
- 34:27Speaker 1: do that is to sit still for a moment, be sad,
- 34:32Speaker 1: struggle a little bit in terms of asking myself these
- 34:34Speaker 1: questions that were super answerless, and I didn't have the answer.
- 34:37Speaker 1: So I O, I'm all about the how to. I
- 34:40Speaker 1: got three books around three people that I looked up
- 34:42Speaker 1: to that I ultimately wanted to model my career. After
- 34:45Speaker 1: I read their books, I read articles. I sat home
- 34:48Speaker 1: a lot, I looked up a lot of information. At
- 34:51Speaker 1: that time, podcasts were just coming in, but not to
- 34:53Speaker 1: the extent they are now. But I listened to a
- 34:56Speaker 1: lot of speeches, a lot of Ted talks and I
- 34:59Speaker 1: ended up getting into yoga. I started praying a lot,
- 35:02Speaker 1: and during this I don't necessarily meditate. I pray and
- 35:06Speaker 1: doing my prayers, I started wanting to move a little bit.
- 35:08Speaker 1: So I started going to hot yoga and it was
- 35:10Speaker 1: a time of stillness in the time of movement and
- 35:13Speaker 1: finding that stillness internally that I figured out, wait a minute,
- 35:17Speaker 1: there's something here. I love this. So I started running
- 35:19Speaker 1: with a friend and through running, I was just like,
- 35:22Speaker 1: I love moving my body in a different way. How
- 35:25Speaker 1: can I do this? And I was still hosting. I
- 35:28Speaker 1: was still putting myself out there. I was taking That
- 35:30Speaker 1: was when I started taking hosting classes. It was getting
- 35:32Speaker 1: being still that I was like, I want to do
- 35:34Speaker 1: on camera work. I want to have a voice. I
- 35:35Speaker 1: want to I want to magnify, I want to be
- 35:38Speaker 1: on a bigger platform. And I created a real that
- 35:41Speaker 1: was really janky and sent it to everyone. It was like,
- 35:43Speaker 1: I will host your kids' birthday parties. I will, and
- 35:46Speaker 1: this is all These things would come to me while
- 35:47Speaker 1: I was doing yoga, while I was running, and I
- 35:50Speaker 1: was just like, I gotta do things for free, to
- 35:52Speaker 1: get something for money, and I don't have this skill set.
- 35:54Speaker 1: Yet I can practice all day, but doing it for
- 35:56Speaker 1: real is doing it for real is experience as a
- 36:00Speaker 1: friend who said they're looking to Brooklyn. Nets move to Brooklyn.
- 36:04Speaker 1: You were just in the NBA. You stopped dancing for
- 36:06Speaker 1: the next you know how this works. They're looking to
- 36:09Speaker 1: Phillis Spot because the girl that's currently doing it their
- 36:11Speaker 1: first season wants to change. And she's like, I'm going
- 36:14Speaker 1: to move your resume and reel along to our senior
- 36:17Speaker 1: vice president of entertainment. And I was like, yeah, go
- 36:19Speaker 1: for it. Yeah sure, like I could do that, absolutely terrified.
- 36:24Speaker 1: She sent it along and they called me in for
- 36:25Speaker 1: a meeting and they were like, okay, great, we want
- 36:27Speaker 1: to offer you the job. And I was like, oh no, no, no, no,
- 36:28Speaker 1: like I don't have any experience and that. They're like, yeah,
- 36:30Speaker 1: that's okay. You know how the NBA works, You've done
- 36:33Speaker 1: your research, you have a great personality. Let's give it
- 36:36Speaker 1: a go. It's only like half a season left. Let's
- 36:38Speaker 1: bring you in. And I went from speaking to zero
- 36:41Speaker 1: people to speaking to eighteen thousand people at Barclay Center.
- 36:45Speaker 1: And it was because and I really it was because
- 36:48Speaker 1: four months of just being by myself of being productive,
- 36:52Speaker 1: of getting the word out, of figuring out, answering those
- 36:54Speaker 1: questions of what I want to do, taking those hosting classes,
- 36:57Speaker 1: finding the aha moment after my first hosting class and
- 36:59Speaker 1: saying like, oh no, no, no, this is it. This is
- 37:02Speaker 1: what I'm meant, this is what I'm born to do.
- 37:04Speaker 1: And I know it wasn't the only thing, but it
- 37:06Speaker 1: was one of those things that I was like, I
- 37:07Speaker 1: have to pursue this to make sure and I encourage
- 37:10Speaker 1: anyone that in this moment of just being busy. I'm
- 37:14Speaker 1: not telling anyone to quit their nine to five. You
- 37:15Speaker 1: got to pay your bills. What I am saying is
- 37:18Speaker 1: taking moment to scale back on going out, scale back
- 37:21Speaker 1: on doing the odd jobs, still, scale back on just
- 37:23Speaker 1: doing things because you just said yes and saying no
- 37:26Speaker 1: to a lot of things and saying no to yourself,
- 37:28Speaker 1: sitting home and finding that moment of stillness or those
- 37:32Speaker 1: moments of stillness, maybe through yoga, maybe through fitness. And
- 37:35Speaker 1: it was like fitness that brought me to first follow
- 37:42Speaker 1: up question, what are the three books? Oh? So it
- 37:45Speaker 1: was Ryan Seacrest, because I was like Ryan Seacrest's host Extra. Yeah,
- 37:50Speaker 1: I read his book. I read I always pad Me
- 37:54Speaker 1: Lashed Me book because she was a TV host from
- 37:57Speaker 1: a model, so Ryan was a host. I wanted to
- 37:59Speaker 1: be a host. Padima was a model turned TV host.
- 38:02Speaker 1: She did cooking more so like food was her lane.
- 38:05Speaker 1: And then of course Oprah and I knew you knew
- 38:08Speaker 1: Obrah was in there, like everyone should read everything about Oprah.
- 38:12Speaker 1: And it was one of those things where I was like,
- 38:13Speaker 1: this is the hybrid of everything that I want to
- 38:15Speaker 1: do or want to be. So and I remember my boyfriend,
- 38:18Speaker 1: who is very pivotal in my store. I always say,
- 38:21Speaker 1: you have to find an Andrew. There's this thing of like,
- 38:24Speaker 1: I don't know. I read a book and the chapter
- 38:26Speaker 1: was find your Andrew, and I was like, oh, I
- 38:28Speaker 1: found mine, but it was someone who changed that person's life.
- 38:32Speaker 1: But find your Andrew is truly a part of my story.
- 38:34Speaker 1: Find that person that's going to give it to you real,
- 38:36Speaker 1: give it to your right and not back down. And
- 38:39Speaker 1: he's that person still in my life. And he was like,
- 38:41Speaker 1: you got to stop doing what you're doing. It's okay
- 38:44Speaker 1: not to make money right now. It's okay to not
- 38:46Speaker 1: have an answer when your friends say, so what are
- 38:48Speaker 1: you up to? It's okay to say nothing that you're
- 38:51Speaker 1: figuring it out. It's okay. So, yeah, I found my
- 38:54Speaker 1: Andrew and that where he was just like, this is
- 38:57Speaker 1: the first You're not the first person to be lost.
- 39:00Speaker 1: Read a book on someone who's doing what you want
- 39:01Speaker 1: to do.
- 39:02Speaker 2: When did you guys meet?
- 39:05Speaker 1: We met? I think it was me when I first
- 39:07Speaker 1: started dancing for the Knicks. We met. We met in
- 39:10Speaker 1: a club. I get that because people are just like,
- 39:12Speaker 1: how did you meet? I stay in the club. Let
- 39:14Speaker 1: me keep it real. We met at a club, and
- 39:16Speaker 1: that's how funny enough, that's how my mom and dad met.
- 39:19Speaker 2: Really, yeah, I know I knew it was okay, that was.
- 39:26Speaker 1: Yeah. So we met in a club and yeah, we've
- 39:29Speaker 1: been slumming it ever since.
- 39:31Speaker 2: Okay. Then the second follow up question is, talk to
- 39:34Speaker 2: me about that feeling you got when you walked out
- 39:36Speaker 2: on the court for the first time, because I'm sure
- 39:39Speaker 2: with a microphone in your hand, it's very different than
- 39:42Speaker 2: when you were dancing with the Knicks.
- 39:44Speaker 1: So dancing from the Knicks, I was chop boss. I
- 39:47Speaker 1: was like, you walk out, you have the comfort level
- 39:50Speaker 1: of being with like sixteen other women. In my mind,
- 39:53Speaker 1: everyone's just in all of our minds. Everyone's just watching us,
- 39:56Speaker 1: but like, if you miss the step, you can follow
- 39:58Speaker 1: someone else, but when you're on, when you're alone, you're
- 40:01Speaker 1: truly alone. I walked out, and honestly, it was the
- 40:04Speaker 1: worst ever. It was probably the worst hosting anyone has
- 40:09Speaker 1: ever done. But I remember having an earpiece in and
- 40:11Speaker 1: someone saying you're going in ten, You're going in five
- 40:14Speaker 1: and four. And I walked out on that court and
- 40:16Speaker 1: I was terrified, extremely scared, but I knew I had
- 40:20Speaker 1: to do it. And of course Andrew's advice. Right before
- 40:24Speaker 1: I went on, he had texted me, this is the
- 40:26Speaker 1: worst I don't and this could be good or bad.
- 40:27Speaker 1: It was great to hear this is the worst you're
- 40:29Speaker 1: ever going to do, that's okay. And I was like, Okay,
- 40:34Speaker 1: this is going to suck. I'm going to be bad,
- 40:36Speaker 1: and that's okay because I'd never done it before. And
- 40:38Speaker 1: obviously the first time you do anything, it's your worst time.
- 40:42Speaker 1: Most times, it's your worst time, and it can only
- 40:44Speaker 1: grow from there. And that's what you want, truly, you
- 40:46Speaker 1: want to come in doing anything average at best, so
- 40:50Speaker 1: that your story is like I was the comeback kid.
- 40:53Speaker 1: I did okay, So I did absolutely terrible, and I
- 40:56Speaker 1: was terrified, and I was reading this paper. The paper
- 40:59Speaker 1: was covering my but my shoes were cute and my
- 41:01Speaker 1: outfit was nice and my hair was laid. So I
- 41:04Speaker 1: will say that made me feel better about the pictures,
- 41:07Speaker 1: not necessarily the video.
- 41:09Speaker 2: That shures looked great. I looked fabulous doing you gotta.
- 41:12Speaker 1: Find the upside of it. My risks are my wrists
- 41:15Speaker 1: are pretty today? I don't know. I mean this.
- 41:17Speaker 2: Morning, I walked out of the house and I opened
- 41:18Speaker 2: my airpod's case and one of the air pods was missing.
- 41:21Speaker 2: And in my head, I was like, it's been three
- 41:22Speaker 2: years and I haven't lost an AirPod. So I mean,
- 41:24Speaker 2: love's find upside upside. Maybe it's time for me to
- 41:27Speaker 2: pay my dues seventy nine dollars single AirPod replacement fee.
- 41:31Speaker 2: I google that real quick. Okay, So you're hosting, yes,
- 41:35Speaker 2: and things get better because they have to.
- 41:39Speaker 1: They do they they have to. Things get better. I
- 41:42Speaker 1: practice a skill. I fall in love with it even more.
- 41:44Speaker 1: The Brooklyn Nets couldn't give them more of a shout out.
- 41:47Speaker 1: Afforded me the comfort without being breathing down my neck.
- 41:51Speaker 1: In terms of every time I'd come up the court.
- 41:52Speaker 1: They were like, great job, good job. Like they they
- 41:54Speaker 1: build me up. They allowed me space to build my
- 41:57Speaker 1: confidence and something that I had never done. And it
- 42:00Speaker 1: was a unique and it's still unique because I still
- 42:02Speaker 1: do it to this day. I'm one person in New
- 42:04Speaker 1: York City that does that. I own a court, I
- 42:05Speaker 1: own an arena. I'm the only woman on that court.
- 42:08Speaker 1: I walk out with heals every single time, and I
- 42:11Speaker 1: speak to the arena. I do in game hits, live
- 42:14Speaker 1: hits every time out. Whether it's marketing plug, interviewing someone,
- 42:16Speaker 1: interviewing a coach, interviewing a player, interviewing a celebrity, or
- 42:19Speaker 1: just doing a fun game with some of the fans.
- 42:21Speaker 1: That are happening. That's happening. And it's just like it
- 42:25Speaker 1: gave me experience and it put me in positions to
- 42:28Speaker 1: get jobs. People are like, oh, Allie, does that here?
- 42:31Speaker 1: Who's that girl? Let me hire her for this or
- 42:34Speaker 1: let's find out more about her.
- 42:36Speaker 2: I offered your name to someone the other day who
- 42:37Speaker 2: asked me to do a hosting job that I couldn't do.
- 42:39Speaker 1: We'll talk about it.
- 42:40Speaker 2: We'll talk about ass Thanks for the flow, thanks to
- 42:42Speaker 2: the but yeah, seriously, it's like it's the same thing
- 42:46Speaker 2: like with podcasting or like with moderating panels, like you
- 42:48Speaker 2: do it once and someone's like, well this person does
- 42:50Speaker 2: this thing, so maybe they can do this thing for
- 42:52Speaker 2: our thing that we need to do, you know, so
- 42:54Speaker 2: to your testament of do it once and get it again.
- 42:57Speaker 1: Yeah, and you might have to do it for free,
- 42:59Speaker 1: and that's okay.
- 42:59Speaker 2: Yeah. I remember when I sat down with Gunnar Peterson,
- 43:01Speaker 2: he said, he said, never do something for free, and
- 43:04Speaker 2: I said, I asked to him, well, what about when
- 43:06Speaker 2: someone asks that of you? He's like, well, then ask
- 43:09Speaker 2: yourself a beyond money, what are you gaining from this opportunity?
- 43:13Speaker 2: Because it's not always like someone's going to hand you
- 43:15Speaker 2: a stack of hundo's and be like, thank you so much.
- 43:17Speaker 2: But who do you get to meet from this opportunity?
- 43:19Speaker 2: What do you get to do? Like, what do you gain?
- 43:22Speaker 2: What do you learn? Think about it that way before
- 43:24Speaker 2: you think all money.
- 43:25Speaker 1: And that's exactly That's exactly how I weigh options to
- 43:28Speaker 1: this day. When I mentioned earlier about making a decision.
- 43:30Speaker 1: In making decisions, the upside is either a capital gain
- 43:34Speaker 1: where you're saying, like I'm going to make some income
- 43:36Speaker 1: from this, this is justifiable, or it's a platform game
- 43:39Speaker 1: where it's like I'm going to get exposure to new people,
- 43:42Speaker 1: I'm going to get to practice my craft, I'm going
- 43:45Speaker 1: to get more experienced. I'm going to like you're able
- 43:47Speaker 1: to leverage this in two ways financial gain or platform
- 43:50Speaker 1: gain gain, and that is really important. So nothing is
- 43:53Speaker 1: necessarily free because you're getting that platform.
- 44:02Speaker 2: Taking a break from today's episode to give some love
- 44:05Speaker 2: to four Stigmatic, a wellness company that mixes shrooms and
- 44:09Speaker 2: adaptogens with everything from coffee to protein powder and edible skincare.
- 44:15Speaker 2: Seriously sounds a little wacky, but once you try their products,
- 44:18Speaker 2: it'll be hard to remember life without them. Personally, I
- 44:22Speaker 2: am hooked hooked hooked on their peanut butter protein and
- 44:25Speaker 2: also their mushroom ground coffee with Lion's May and I
- 44:29Speaker 2: poured myself a cup this morning. I had a really
- 44:32Speaker 2: peaceful walk around my neighborhood while listening to a podcast
- 44:36Speaker 2: from alex Elle. If you haven't heard of her before,
- 44:38Speaker 2: I definitely encourage you to check her out. I'll put
- 44:40Speaker 2: a link to that episode that I was checking out
- 44:43Speaker 2: in the show notes. Anyway, the Lion's Made coffee, It's
- 44:46Speaker 2: got chocolate mushrooms in there, which the board overall wellness

- 44:55Speaker 2: crash on the Lion's main note, it can be your

- 45:13Speaker 2: it fits into everyone's lifestyle. By the way, Also important
- 45:18Speaker 2: to note I can guarantee that it tastes just like
- 45:20Speaker 2: regular coffee and not at all like mushrooms. Of course,
- 45:25Speaker 2: they have a special offer for the Hurdle podcast audience.

- 46:02Speaker 2: the nets and it's going really well. When does Peloton
- 46:05Speaker 2: come into the picture?
- 46:06Speaker 1: So hosting for the nets? What ends up happening first
- 46:09Speaker 1: was I started getting into the Instagram game and was like,
- 46:12Speaker 1: you know what, I want to continue to brand myself
- 46:14Speaker 1: as fitness model, and I would I remember doing a
- 46:17Speaker 1: shoot doing some Adidas wearing some Adidas. I was like,
- 46:20Speaker 1: I want to play the angle of Adidas. I've never
- 46:21Speaker 1: worked with them in any of my modeling jobs, and
- 46:23Speaker 1: I'd like to get in with them. So I got
- 46:26Speaker 1: a guy to take some photos of me and Adidas
- 46:28Speaker 1: posted them. Adidas reached out and they had it. Kind
- 46:31Speaker 1: of was a trifecta. At this point, Adidas reached out
- 46:34Speaker 1: in terms of, we want you to build some content.
- 46:37Speaker 1: I had created Love Squad in order to be a
- 46:39Speaker 1: great host. As I mentioned, I wanted to make sure
- 46:40Speaker 1: that I was expanding my vocabulary and gaining writing skills.
- 46:44Speaker 1: So I started writing about fitness, writing about my yoga sessions,
- 46:47Speaker 1: writing about running, writing about you know, waking up early,
- 46:50Speaker 1: getting these things done, being a boss at that moment
- 46:53Speaker 1: or in that time. And it was then that they
- 46:56Speaker 1: hired me for a campaign. Their office is in Germany.
- 46:59Speaker 1: At that point wanted looked for an host in New
- 47:01Speaker 1: York City, a woman, and they hired me for a
- 47:03Speaker 1: soccer event to host, and then on top of that,
- 47:06Speaker 1: they reached out for me to do some content. They
- 47:07Speaker 1: started out what I was doing on lovesquad dot com
- 47:10Speaker 1: asked me to do content for Adidas, and so I
- 47:12Speaker 1: started creating content for them. So it was one of
- 47:14Speaker 1: those things where I shot their campaign in Miami shortly
- 47:17Speaker 1: after it, created some content for their California team, and
- 47:20Speaker 1: hosted an event for their Germany team in New York,
- 47:23Speaker 1: and we had that conversation of like, we want you
- 47:25Speaker 1: to be an ambassador, a global ambassador for us. It
- 47:29Speaker 1: all ended up working out where I was the perfect
- 47:31Speaker 1: one of the perfect persons to represent the brand globally.
- 47:34Speaker 1: And it was from there that I met Robin Arzon
- 47:39Speaker 1: and I became fast friends, very close friends to this day.
- 47:42Speaker 1: And she saw what I was doing love Squad and
- 47:44Speaker 1: I was hosting co hosting an Adidas event in the Hamptons,
- 47:48Speaker 1: and I had invited her. She was on the list
- 47:50Speaker 1: of like invites because we each ambassador, she was a
- 47:52Speaker 1: global ambassador at the time, will get these one off events,
- 47:55Speaker 1: and so she was like sitting next to me on
- 47:57Speaker 1: dinner and she was just like, you have to do
- 47:58Speaker 1: Peloton And I was like, oh, nope, I'm good girl.
- 48:01Speaker 1: I'm gonna take these shots and dance like we were
- 48:04Speaker 1: having like a party at that point. And she was like, no, no, no, no.
- 48:07Speaker 1: What you're doing with Love Squad and how you're empowering
- 48:09Speaker 1: the community and how you are athletic in terms of
- 48:13Speaker 1: you run, you can host, you have on camera skills,
- 48:16Speaker 1: you're athletic, and you're empowering the community. People need to
- 48:19Speaker 1: hear about Love Squad and what you're doing, and Poloton's
- 48:21Speaker 1: a platform for that. And I was like, I'm good,
- 48:24Speaker 1: don't want to cycle. Sincerely, thank you, but no, thank you.
- 48:28Speaker 1: And of course, if anyone knows Robin, she doesn't really
- 48:31Speaker 1: take no for an answer. So get back to New
- 48:35Speaker 1: York going to one of I was fit modeling at
- 48:37Speaker 1: the time for Victoria's Secret. Going to my job and
- 48:40Speaker 1: I get a text from someone at Peloton was like, great,
- 48:44Speaker 1: we have you for an audition. We have you set
- 48:48Speaker 1: up for an audition like next week. We want to
- 48:50Speaker 1: meet you before and I was like, wow, thanks Rob,
- 48:54Speaker 1: thanks my girl. That no did not really happen. So
- 48:58Speaker 1: I was like, you know what why I know that
- 49:01Speaker 1: I know in life you get your career or of
- 49:03Speaker 1: finding out what you want to do in life comes
- 49:05Speaker 1: through two ways. Either you know it since you're born
- 49:08Speaker 1: and no one can deviate, no one you don't deviate
- 49:11Speaker 1: from that plan, or someone tells you what you're good
- 49:14Speaker 1: at and what you should be doing. And so I
- 49:16Speaker 1: trusted the instinct, and I trusted her and more so
- 49:18Speaker 1: and said, you know what, she's my friend. I do
- 49:20Speaker 1: trust her. And I went in for the meeting, went
- 49:23Speaker 1: in for the audition, got on that bike. Was not
- 49:26Speaker 1: a cyclist, was not a fitness instructor. Now mind you,
- 49:29Speaker 1: I was running and taking some fun yoga hot yoga
- 49:31Speaker 1: class looms and that was it. And of course I
- 49:34Speaker 1: took dance, and I was a dancer. Was not teaching
- 49:36Speaker 1: anyone anything, and nor did I want to. But I
- 49:39Speaker 1: got on that bike, and I realized in that moment,
- 49:41Speaker 1: or shortly after that moment, there were four cameras, there
- 49:43Speaker 1: was a producer downstairs. It was live. It was broadcasted
- 49:46Speaker 1: to thousands of people at that time. And I was like,
- 49:49Speaker 1: wait a minute, you're telling me I can empower, I
- 49:51Speaker 1: can work out, and I can do things where their
- 49:53Speaker 1: cameras involved such a most option, yes, And I ended
- 49:58Speaker 1: up realizing the opportunity he set and what they were offering,
- 50:01Speaker 1: and I said yes to it, and I was like, Okay,
- 50:04Speaker 1: I need an assistant now because I'm not giving up anything.
- 50:06Speaker 1: I'm doing Love Squad, I'm hosting for the NETS, I'm
- 50:08Speaker 1: keeping Peloton, and I'm going to be a DIDAS Global
- 50:11Speaker 1: Ambassador continuously. And that's kind of how it all came together.
- 50:15Speaker 1: One of the things I will say before your next
- 50:17Speaker 1: question is, I get this often. What do all those
- 50:20Speaker 1: things have in common. One of the things that I've
- 50:23Speaker 1: always wanted to do was be in the limelight. Hints
- 50:26Speaker 1: being a dancer. There's nothing wrong with them in any
- 50:28Speaker 1: of that. If that, if you are that person, own it.
- 50:31Speaker 1: I'm always want to be front and center. I love
- 50:34Speaker 1: on camera work, I love being in front of the camera,
- 50:36Speaker 1: and I love speaking every one of those things. Whether
- 50:40Speaker 1: it's a DIDAS Global Ambassador, I'm moderate panels, I'm in campaigns,
- 50:43Speaker 1: I'm talking about my story of how fitness has influenced
- 50:45Speaker 1: and changed me. Peloton instructor, I'm empowering real time through
- 50:50Speaker 1: fitness while you're on the bike. I get to say
- 50:52Speaker 1: the things that are really truly inspirational to thousands of people.
- 50:55Speaker 1: NETS live on camera that eighteen thousand people. You can't
- 51:00Speaker 1: take that back. Love Squad panel discussions around imperilmpowerment, building, businesses, things, giving, offering,
- 51:05Speaker 1: how tos. All of those things have those things in common,
- 51:08Speaker 1: live on camera. Encouragement I love it.
- 51:11Speaker 2: Where do you gain your inspiration from When you're inspiring
- 51:14Speaker 2: so many other people.
- 51:16Speaker 1: It's really important that you listen to other people's journeys
- 51:20Speaker 1: so you cannot This is why I say, sit down
- 51:25Speaker 1: with people, ask them, not only ask them for help,
- 51:28Speaker 1: but ask them what you can do for them. So
- 51:31Speaker 1: whenever you're feeling in those moments of feedback, when I
- 51:34Speaker 1: have those bi annual feedback sessions that I have with
- 51:37Speaker 1: internal and externally personally and professionally, I sit down with
- 51:42Speaker 1: those people and I learn about their stories, I ask
- 51:44Speaker 1: them for advice, I take their advice, and then I'm
- 51:47Speaker 1: truly inspired by them. And so in those times where
- 51:49Speaker 1: it gets stuff, I'm overwhelmed, I'm ran down, I'm tired.
- 51:52Speaker 1: I remember those words of wisdoms, just like you quote it.
- 51:56Speaker 1: You quote someone that has truly touched you because they've
- 51:58Speaker 1: afforded you time. That's really important. So when I think
- 52:02Speaker 1: of how I'm inspired. I do listen to a lot
- 52:05Speaker 1: of podcasts. I do listen to a lot of sermons.
- 52:08Speaker 1: So Stephen Ferdick is a pastor of Elevation Church, and
- 52:12Speaker 1: I would say, at this point in my life, he
- 52:14Speaker 1: has been outside of Andrew, my boyfriend, has been the
- 52:18Speaker 1: most influential voice. And he doesn't know this influential voice
- 52:25Speaker 1: in my head when it comes to inspiring people, he
- 52:29Speaker 1: just he gets it. He gets it. He's truly blessed
- 52:33Speaker 1: by God. He gets it. And whenever I'm down, whenever
- 52:37Speaker 1: I'm up, I listen to him. He reminds me of
- 52:39Speaker 1: what God has done for me. He reminds me of
- 52:42Speaker 1: what God is doing, how God is moving in my life.
- 52:44Speaker 1: And one of the things I learned is it's not
- 52:47Speaker 1: always how do you say fun or welcoming to maybe
- 52:52Speaker 1: talk about religion or spirituality. But I think it's my
- 52:55Speaker 1: lot in life is that we get so caught up
- 52:57Speaker 1: in what someone should look like, or what a religious
- 53:00Speaker 1: person might sound like, or I mean, what someone with
- 53:03Speaker 1: curly hair acts like, or what a black person should
- 53:05Speaker 1: do or what a white We get so caught up
- 53:07Speaker 1: in these stereotypes, and it's important that we break those
- 53:10Speaker 1: stereotypes down and so yeah, I'm religious, and yeah I
- 53:13Speaker 1: believe in God, and some of the things that we
- 53:16Speaker 1: hear aren't truly what it looks like to be a
- 53:19Speaker 1: religious person. Those are just tigmas, Those are just stereotypes.
- 53:23Speaker 1: So I think that it's important that I that's a
- 53:26Speaker 1: part of my journey and a part of my conversation
- 53:28Speaker 1: because yeah, I think we get caught up in what
- 53:31Speaker 1: these people look like or what they believe, and how
- 53:34Speaker 1: they hate us or hate that, Like that's not who
- 53:36Speaker 1: I am. I'm inclusive.
- 53:38Speaker 2: I mean parallel that to the social media life, like
- 53:40Speaker 2: I mean the highlight reel that is Instagram, Facebook, whatever,
- 53:44Speaker 2: wherever you're consuming that kind of content. It's you see
- 53:47Speaker 2: that and it's like this is how I should be
- 53:49Speaker 2: or how I should act, or what I should do.
- 53:51Speaker 2: Like if I'm not doing this much running or if
- 53:54Speaker 2: I'm not doing this much whatever it is, then you
- 53:57Speaker 2: have this inferiority complex that you're messing something up. But
- 54:01Speaker 2: the beauty is is that you get to define every
- 54:03Speaker 2: day who it is that you are, and by offering
- 54:05Speaker 2: your authentic self to the world, like there's only one you,
- 54:08Speaker 2: So then why like if you're spending all your time
- 54:11Speaker 2: trying to be somebody else or trying to fit some
- 54:13Speaker 2: type of mold that you're perceiving for somebody else, Like
- 54:15Speaker 2: you're wasting your time.
- 54:16Speaker 1: And also getting caught up and being nervous to be
- 54:19Speaker 1: who you are, because I know I did deal with
- 54:22Speaker 1: the fear of like should I tell people that I
- 54:24Speaker 1: believe in God? Did I even say Jesus is the name?
- 54:26Speaker 1: And it's like, at the end of the day, people
- 54:27Speaker 1: are going to love me and some people aren't gonna
- 54:29Speaker 1: love me, and they're gonna love me whether I am
- 54:31Speaker 1: myself or not. It's just like that's just the nature
- 54:33Speaker 1: of life. And I truly encourage anyone who's listening own
- 54:37Speaker 1: all areas of you. I'm not saying I'm perfect. I'm
- 54:39Speaker 1: not saying I will ever be, because I subscribe to
- 54:42Speaker 1: being real beyond being perfect. I'm not saying I'm the
- 54:44Speaker 1: perfect this, or that I'm not the perfect peloton instructor,
- 54:46Speaker 1: just like I'm not the perfect like Christian, Like I'm
- 54:48Speaker 1: not any the perfect anything. I'm not the perfect girlfriend.
- 54:51Speaker 1: Like However, I'm okay with being basic sometimes i am
- 54:56Speaker 1: and I'm okay with bossing up and other times and
- 54:59Speaker 1: I think that if you're ever struggling with not only
- 55:01Speaker 1: just what it should look like, but struggling with exposing
- 55:05Speaker 1: who you are completely, I really encourage you to think
- 55:08Speaker 1: about it and and.
- 55:10Speaker 2: Do it.
- 55:11Speaker 1: Take a risk on yourself, because no one else is.
- 55:14Speaker 2: I think also, it's like that important saying that says,
- 55:16Speaker 2: if you try to be a leader or a person
- 55:18Speaker 2: for everyone, then you're a leader or a person for.
- 55:20Speaker 1: No one, no one, for no one, not at all.
- 55:22Speaker 2: Noo. Okay, So how do you then, when you're taking
- 55:28Speaker 2: so much time to give back to your partner, to peloton,
- 55:32Speaker 2: to the host, in to everything you're constantly giving and
- 55:35Speaker 2: giving and giving, how do you give back to you?
- 55:37Speaker 2: What do you do for you?
- 55:38Speaker 1: Oh? I'm glad you didn't ask me. What's self care?
- 55:42Speaker 2: You just do something for you?
- 55:43Speaker 1: Yeah? What do I do for me? I think all
- 55:46Speaker 1: of those things are pretty selfish. I'm gonna be honest,
- 55:48Speaker 1: I'm gonna be super real and transparent. I think that
- 55:52Speaker 1: everything that I do is selfish, and I'm okay with
- 55:54Speaker 1: admitting that. I just talk about being your whole self.
- 55:57Speaker 1: I think when you can admit who you are and
- 56:00Speaker 1: what you're doing and why you're doing it, you get
- 56:02Speaker 1: yourself to people love you more in terms of they
- 56:05Speaker 1: feel safe. They love you more because they feel safe
- 56:07Speaker 1: with you, because they're like, she's not hiding, she's not
- 56:10Speaker 1: living in this false reality. So for me, all of
- 56:14Speaker 1: those things are for me. I do these things because
- 56:16Speaker 1: I love them. They feed me. They are a part
- 56:19Speaker 1: of who I am since I was a kid. They
- 56:23Speaker 1: afford me the best opportunity set to bring a family
- 56:27Speaker 1: into this world to live a comfortable life. I'm truly
- 56:30Speaker 1: going to be honest in that, and I think so
- 56:33Speaker 1: when I think of it, what am I doing for me?
- 56:34Speaker 1: I'm doing those things for me. I'm doing those things
- 56:36Speaker 1: because if I didn't do those things, I'd be doing
- 56:39Speaker 1: things that were for everyone else.
- 56:41Speaker 2: And right now, when you're on the biker obviously on Instagram,
- 56:44Speaker 2: you have a great following there. When you take a
- 56:47Speaker 2: second and step back, the people that follow you, they
- 56:49Speaker 2: see who you are from that lens. They see this
- 56:52Speaker 2: business woman and a peloton instructor and a Brooklyn Net's
- 56:55Speaker 2: host and all the things. But when you look in
- 56:56Speaker 2: the mirror, what is it that you see?
- 56:59Speaker 1: I see a woman who's ready to change the world,
- 57:01Speaker 1: and I don't have all the answers on how to
- 57:03Speaker 1: do that, but I know one of the things that
- 57:04Speaker 1: I speak about is bossing up, creating a standard, establishing
- 57:07Speaker 1: a tone. You can walk in any room and change
- 57:09Speaker 1: the tone, whether for good or for bad. You can
- 57:11Speaker 1: create a standard. No need to worry about the rules
- 57:13Speaker 1: when you're setting standards. And it's one of those things
- 57:16Speaker 1: where I truly subscribe to that. Personally, I truly believe
- 57:19Speaker 1: in the good, the bad, the unknown about myself, listening
- 57:23Speaker 1: to feedback from people implementing those things. But when I
- 57:27Speaker 1: look in the mirror, I do see myself as a
- 57:29Speaker 1: game changer. I do see myself as someone who is
- 57:32Speaker 1: going to blaze a trail of redefining and recreating what
- 57:36Speaker 1: an entrepreneur looks like, what a woman of this century
- 57:40Speaker 1: looks like, and what it means to really inspire the
- 57:44Speaker 1: next generation. Again, don't have all the answers, but that's
- 57:48Speaker 1: that's who I see myself as when I look in
- 57:50Speaker 1: the mirror. Not easy comes with a lot of responsibility,
- 57:53Speaker 1: but I don't choose easy.
- 57:54Speaker 2: So on the days where you wake up and maybe
- 57:58Speaker 2: you've gotten like a no or some one has like
- 58:00Speaker 2: really knocked you down, what do you do or what
- 58:03Speaker 2: have you changed to be able to still see that
- 58:06Speaker 2: person in the mirror, Because I think that's what a
- 58:08Speaker 2: lot of people struggle with, right, It's like, what one rejection,
- 58:11Speaker 2: that one problem, that one person that makes them feel
- 58:14Speaker 2: lesser than or without? What do you tell that person
- 58:17Speaker 2: who feels without at that moment?
- 58:20Speaker 1: So, yeah, it's not always like cotton Kenny, drummon, whatever'
- 58:24Speaker 1: is it? Cotton Kenny, rain, drafts and doughnuts in my
- 58:28Speaker 1: life on those moments that I am sad and that
- 58:31Speaker 1: when I do look in the mirror and I can't
- 58:33Speaker 1: find that girl, I can't find that woman, I can't
- 58:36Speaker 1: find that person, I allow myself to just be. I
- 58:39Speaker 1: know that sounds so crazy, but I always say, feel
- 58:42Speaker 1: all the feels. So if you want to cry, cry,
- 58:45Speaker 1: and I do cry. I cry a lot. Actually I
- 58:49Speaker 1: don't cry because I'm always sad, but I cry because
- 58:51Speaker 1: I need to get it out. I don't want to
- 58:53Speaker 1: hold it in. I don't want to like pretend. That's
- 58:55Speaker 1: also a form of pretending. Like if I keep practicing
- 58:58Speaker 1: this and preaching like be your full self, like be
- 59:01Speaker 1: who you are, it's like I have to be that
- 59:03Speaker 1: person too. And some days when I feel lost and
- 59:06Speaker 1: I definitely want to give up a lot of times
- 59:10Speaker 1: I feel that way, I get into that mood and
- 59:13Speaker 1: allow myself to feel that way, and I also reach
- 59:16Speaker 1: out to friends, like I need to vent. I'll send
- 59:18Speaker 1: a voice note quick to somebody like here's a vent,
- 59:20Speaker 1: here's a rant. Feel free to turn it off at
- 59:22Speaker 1: any point, but I need to get this out. Obviously
- 59:24Speaker 1: someone that I feel safe with or that I built
- 59:26Speaker 1: a relationship with. But I tell anyone around me feel
- 59:29Speaker 1: all the feels. Yeah, allow yourself. You can't. The worst
- 59:33Speaker 1: advice is when someone says you should just feel confident,
- 59:37Speaker 1: you should just be this. I'm like, if I could be,
- 59:39Speaker 1: if I could feel that, I would. So it's like
- 59:42Speaker 1: I can't push myself to a point to feel something
- 59:45Speaker 1: or be something that I'm not ready to feel or be.
- 59:48Speaker 1: So sometimes, yeah, I'm going to get out of the slump.
- 59:50Speaker 1: Maybe in a day. Sometimes it's gonna take me a month.
- 59:52Speaker 1: Sometimes I'm going to Sometimes I mean this year, earlier,
- 59:55Speaker 1: this year I dealt with it was month of February,
- 59:57Speaker 1: six weeks I would say February to March anxiety AF
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: I could not get myself together. Imagine running a business
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: having two women, like two employees, so what should.
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: We be doing?
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: I'm like, honestly, I can't even answer. I don't know.
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: I didn't brush my teeth today, I can't roll out
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: of bed right now, like and then have to do
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: that where yeah, I do push through when it's on peloton,
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: but even in that, when I'm on that bike, I'm like,
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: anybody in this room suffering right now, please put your
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: handu because I'm gonna raise my hand. I want you
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: to know that. And there's it breaks down that wall.
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: Let's be real about it. I don't have the again,
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: I don't have the answer. Is there gonna be days
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: I feel strong and powerful, and there's gonna be days
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: where I'm just like, okay, you are strong and powerful,
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: just not right now, you don't feel that way. So
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: I encourage myself to feel the feels. I don't push
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: myself to be something or to feel something that I don't.
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: And I do get a little antsie when I do
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: have those bouts of like anxiety or mild depression or sadness,
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: I do get a little antie like, and I do
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: tell myself, I'm like, well that when you get on
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: Instagram you're like, well, that person's always doing well, and
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: this person has everything going for them and they're so
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: skinny and pretty in their hair is gray and they
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: know all the right things to say. And then it
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: like stop. And one of the things you said earlier,
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: you were like, you should do this. I get the
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: head you should do this, you should do this. And
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: I always tell myself stop shooting on yourself, girl, stop.
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: Stop it, stop it.
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: So, yeah, it's not I don't again, don't have the
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: answer for it. It's not a pretty like read this
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: book and you're gonna say this, say this mantra and
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: you're gonna be fine. Look in the mirror and spend
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: around three times. Don't have the answer. But what I
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: do allow myself to do is take the time that
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: I need to be in the place that I need
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: to be at.
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: That And you mentioned the worst piece of advice. But
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: when you look back on your career so far in
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: this like mini empire, let's call it, oh that's as
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: let's call it an empire empire that you are building, boss,
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: what would you say, has been one of the best
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: pieces of advice that someone has offered you?
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: So many Oh my gosh, I could. I think that
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: one of the things I remind myself, and I guess
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: I'm having like a brain freezone on like the best
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: advice that I have ever gotten, because I I feel
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: like I've getten gotten so many great things. But one
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: of the things I do remind myself of is that
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: most times, no one knows what they're doing. Yeah, that
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: makes me feel better about it. In a room where
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: decisions or conversations are being had, no one knows what
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: they're doing. Running a business, no one knows really what
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: they're doing title sweet sea sweet people c sweet level.
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: They don't know what they're doing. Like even the most
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: expert of them of all don't always know what they're doing.
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: So it makes me feel good that I don't have
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: to know what I and.
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: Someone had to be the first to set the president anyway, right.
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: I hate just this idea that like, well, this is
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: the industry standard for this, or this is how much
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: someone should be paying you to do X or Z,
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: or this is how you should act in this situation.
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: Like No, so many times I'm just like, well, this
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: is where I'm at. So if you want to work together,
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: if you want to do this, if you want x
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: or Z this is where I'm coming from. So we
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: can either meet there or meet in the middle. But
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: if you don't want to like take my fork in
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: the road, then like take yours and find somebody else.
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, I think that's I think that's a
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: great approach. I also think, like in that moment of
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: just realizing that no one knows what they're doing, it's
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: really important that you articulate why. So one of the
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: things that I realized, like going to a lot of conferences,
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: speaking on a lot of panels and building a business,
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: is people do it and they always say, oh, because
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: I love it. It's not a reason. It's not the reason why.
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: The reason why is deeper than that. You can love
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: a lot of things. So I think that when you're
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: asking yes for more money, set in precedence when you
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: are when you realize that no one has the answers,
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: if you're able to album solve, offer a solve and
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: say that this is what you think should be happening.
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: You need to articulate why, and you don't have to
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: have that answer right away.
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: So what is it that you're not doing right now
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: that you want to do?
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: So I'm not running for President. I'm so sorry everyone,
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: not just yet Love twenty twenty the throw on my
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: hat in the ring. Now, Oh, I came on your
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: podcast to announce my presence.
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: Platform that national news.
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: That would be awesome. So there's so many things and
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: I have to I really do have to reule myself
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: in sometimes. I got to like wrangle my my imagination
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: in sometimes. One of the things that I really want
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: to do is I do want to write a book.
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: So I have started, but again, asking myself the why
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: is really important, So I know that I want to
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: do this. So I have started the process and it's
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: going well, and there's entries and it's awesome and it's
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: helping me to refine what I believe and I'm articulating
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: it better. So it is helping. But I don't know
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: exactly why I'm doing it just yet outside of oh
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: I love it and I could help people. There has
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: to be a deeper why. So I am doing that
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: and again, so working out the why so when it
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: is or if it does get published, there's a story
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: of like, here's why I really did this. Yeah, I mean,
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: there's so many things that I really want to do
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: at this point. Yes, I want to have a podcast.
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: I'm working on that, but it's like a mini mini podcast,
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: nothing like really amazing that you're doing. So congratulations by
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: the way, and heard how this is exceptional and thanks
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: for having me.
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: I should have said that sooner. So we just started off.
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: We'll just start all over right now.
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: Yes, so I do want to do book and podcasts,
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: but I think right now my focus is I'm in
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: that feedback session that I talk about. I'm in that
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: stage of getting advice taking my brand to another level personally,
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: professionally and with love squad. So I've been in this
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: feedback session where I'm asking people for advice and how
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: do you see me? How do you see my brand?
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: What am I doing? What am I not doing? Because
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: I don't know the answer to that yet. Outside of yes,
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: everyone wants a book, everyone wants a podcast, and not
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: that saying everyone shouldn't get what they want. I just
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: got to be able to answer the why a little
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: bit more. In order to do that, I need more
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: information than I outside of my own head.
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: It's really special that you understand the value of asking
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: for that. Thank you. Really special. Okay, So the last
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: question I ask on the pod every time. If you
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: had the opportunity right now to offer the alley post accident,
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: in that Hurtle moment, a little piece of advice when
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: she's going through that tough time looking back on it now,
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: something maybe you wish you knew then, or maybe you
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: know as the years have gone on. You offer her
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: something when she's going through those tough times. What do
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: you tell her?
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: This might sound. I don't even want to judge how
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: it's going to sound. I wouldn't tell her anything because
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: her mindset was way better off than sometimes my mindset
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: is right now, knowing all the things I know, I
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: think sometimes we get into this thing of like we
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: should have done this sooner or faster, and Homegirl at
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: nine years old, like, I don't know who that was
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: sometimes and I know that was me, but she was boss.
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: And I say that because she was fearless, she relied
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: on her own intuition, she trusted herselves, her ability, and
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: it really has carried me to the point that I
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: am now. So I wouldn't mess not necessarily mess that up.
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: I wouldn't tamper with that. And I think that I
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: try to get back to that space a lot. I
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: don't I'm not always successful, but there are moments that
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: I am. I get back to that trusting my gut,
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: trusting that that inner boss, trusting that fearlessness, that without consequences,
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: I'm going forward. Mentality that most times youth the youth
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: possess and I think I possessed that at nine years old,
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: and I wouldn't I wouldn't tell her anything.
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: Your story is really special, Ali. Oh thanks, thanks so
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: much for having to hang out with me.
