- 0:03Speaker 1: then bringing you the folks then and I have brought show.
- 0:11Speaker 1: On today's show, we have local cricket scores, We've got
- 0:15Speaker 1: news on hockey, We've got news on the Radna Park
- 0:18Speaker 1: Junior Fun Run. We've got a recap of my weekend
- 0:24Speaker 1: which was at the Pretty Mudy you made Stone On Saturday,
- 0:31Speaker 1: they're at the Burewater five and fifteen miler organized by
- 0:35Speaker 1: Wadhurst Runners. I hope to mention about a bike ride
- 0:42Speaker 1: that's starting today over the weekend is going to happen.
- 0:45Speaker 1: It's the new Romney under thirteens and they're going to
- 0:48Speaker 1: cycle one hundred and forty seven miles and in a
- 0:50Speaker 1: couple of weeks we hope to be getting them in
- 0:52Speaker 1: the studio to tell us what it was all about
- 0:55Speaker 1: as they raise money to save young lives versus cancer.
- 1:05Speaker 1: And we're going to have a special report on the
- 1:07Speaker 1: Herald Cup, which is seventy years old this year and
- 1:11Speaker 1: still going strong on Sunday. I'm sure you know this.
- 1:17Speaker 1: It will be forty years since the Live Aid concert,
- 1:20Speaker 1: which is on the thirteenth of July nineteen eighty five,
- 1:23Speaker 1: so I'm going to start the show today with the
- 1:26Speaker 1: first rock song that was actually played that day at Wembley.
- 1:29Speaker 1: It did start off with the Cold Stream Gods and
- 1:31Speaker 1: the National Anthem, but this was the first classic rock song,
- 1:35Speaker 1: and it's just everybody knows this tune. So please joine
- 1:39Speaker 1: in as we play rocking all over the world from
- 1:43Speaker 1: Status quote. Well, what a belter of a song to
- 2:10Speaker 1: start a sports show. I would like to start a
- 2:14Speaker 1: show on a powerful anthem. You know, have you been
- 2:19Speaker 1: rocking all over the office, rocking all over the school,
- 2:25Speaker 1: rocking all over the kitchen. But I've been rocking all
- 2:29Speaker 1: over the studio here at Radio folks, And that was
- 2:31Speaker 1: Status Quo, and that is the classic song for everyone
- 2:35Speaker 1: knows this song. On the guitar, I said that easy
- 2:37Speaker 1: to play because you've just got an air guitar and
- 2:39Speaker 1: you just throw yourself into it. And what a great track. Now.
- 2:44Speaker 1: You can't believe that live aid was forty years ago
- 2:46Speaker 1: at Wembley Stadium, you know, and I'm sure we've all
- 2:49Speaker 1: got fond memories of that, one of those concerts that
- 2:52Speaker 1: you wish you'd been there. One outstanding thing for me
- 2:55Speaker 1: was remembering that it feels Colins sang at Wembley he
- 3:00Speaker 1: took the concord and then he sang at the Philadelphia
- 3:03Speaker 1: Live aid our call was that forty years ago? Right, Oh,
- 3:07Speaker 1: this is a sports show after Also, I suppose we'd
- 3:09Speaker 1: better do some sport. Well, we're going to start with
- 3:12Speaker 1: the local cricket scene. Now. Now, you would have thought
- 3:16Speaker 1: that two hundred and fifty eight for nine was a
- 3:19Speaker 1: good score in fifty overs, which is what Folks have
- 3:22Speaker 1: made against Canterbury last Saturday. However, they were chasing three
- 3:26Speaker 1: hundred and sixty two for four, which is an amazing
- 3:29Speaker 1: score Via the Canterbury side. Jared take made one hundred
- 3:33Speaker 1: and sixteen and Jared Laisort scored two hundred and eight,
- 3:37Speaker 1: so Canterbury won the match by one hundred and four runs.
- 3:40Speaker 1: This put Folks them down into seventh position in the championship.
- 3:44Speaker 1: This week, Bromley Common are the visitors to the Three Hills.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Hawkins welcomed at Saint Lawrence and Hyland Court, who won
- 3:51Speaker 1: the toss and decided to bat, making two hundred and
- 3:54Speaker 1: thirty four for nine in forty overs. Hawkins opener and
- 3:58Speaker 1: former guest of the show, Terry Dunham, may one hundred
- 4:00Speaker 1: and fifty five not out and the team went on
- 4:02Speaker 1: to score a total of two hundred and thirty eight
- 4:05Speaker 1: for three, so they won the game by seven wickets.
- 4:08Speaker 1: This Saturday, Hawkins are away to Wire which means a
- 4:10Speaker 1: trip just outside Ashford. Hide batted first away against Canterbury
- 4:15Speaker 1: thirty eleven have made two hundred and forty five for nine.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Canterbury could only muster ninety five runs for five wickets,
- 4:23Speaker 1: so Hi have won the game by one hundred and
- 4:24Speaker 1: fifty runs. This week they are away again. It's their
- 4:28Speaker 1: turn to place at Lawrence and Highland Court, which means
- 4:30Speaker 1: a trip to Bridge near Canterbury. Ii've Green lost the
- 4:34Speaker 1: toss at home to Worth that were put into bat
- 4:37Speaker 1: but could only manage seventy six all out. Worth made
- 4:40Speaker 1: seventy nine for three so won the game by seven wickets.
- 4:44Speaker 1: On Saturday, the Green are away to Kennington in Ashford.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Seward were at home to herne Bay. Silwood won the
- 4:50Speaker 1: toss and decided to bat, making one hundred and seventy
- 4:53Speaker 1: seven all out. Herne Bay then made the one hundred
- 4:55Speaker 1: and seventy eight necessary and had a six wicket victory.
- 5:00Speaker 1: This week Salt are a way to Edgerton and finally
- 5:04Speaker 1: Sipton Park made the journey to Bapchild near Sittingbourne. Bapchild
- 5:08Speaker 1: won the toss and decided to bat, but could only
- 5:10Speaker 1: make one hundred and six all out, thanks mainly to
- 5:13Speaker 1: the bowling of Jack Woodward, who took seven wickets for
- 5:16Speaker 1: forty eight runs. Simpson Park then made the one hundred
- 5:20Speaker 1: and seven necessary for just two wickets, winning the game
- 5:23Speaker 1: by eight wickets. The two patsmen that did the damage
- 5:26Speaker 1: were Captain Josh Woodwood with fifty four and Phil Coombs
- 5:30Speaker 1: with thirty two. Now this week the Sibs are a
- 5:33Speaker 1: way to Borstal Cricket Club, which means a trip to
- 5:36Speaker 1: a Rochester. So it looks like we should have another
- 5:40Speaker 1: sunny spell, you know, so the cricket we should get
- 5:43Speaker 1: results from all our local games which I will bring
- 5:46Speaker 1: you next week. Now, next song on the playlist. I
- 5:50Speaker 1: do love this one. You all know this one as well.
- 5:53Speaker 1: That's me in the corner. This is our am losing
- 5:56Speaker 1: my religion hurry am, their classic song from nineteen ninety one,
- 6:28Speaker 1: Losing my Religion. What a couple of belts to start
- 6:34Speaker 1: to show, right, Okay, time to turn our attention to
- 6:39Speaker 1: a bit of hockey news. Now Friday evening is something
- 6:42Speaker 1: I love reporting on because it's what they call a
- 6:45Speaker 1: mixed hockey league which takes place and at the Three
- 6:49Speaker 1: Heels on a Friday evening. Anyway, last week's results, I've
- 6:52Speaker 1: got you for the last week's results.
- 6:53Speaker 2: Here.
- 6:55Speaker 1: What they do. There's two pitches and they have four games,
- 6:58Speaker 1: a total of four games each Friday. So last Friday
- 7:02Speaker 1: it was Mainstone Lions two, Kent Police two, OPS White
- 7:06Speaker 1: Team two Ashford Sharks won. Now the Ops under twenty
- 7:10Speaker 1: one's were scored one, Ashford Tiger's and Neil Canterbury Green
- 7:15Speaker 1: Team got three and South Saxon's are scored one. And
- 7:19Speaker 1: the fixtures this Friday sees the Canterbury Reds versus Herne Bay,
- 7:23Speaker 1: the Ops Blue versus Deal Ashford Sharks versus Hulcombe and
- 7:28Speaker 1: OPS Whites versus the Kent Police. So there's a varied
- 7:30Speaker 1: amount of teams there and they're not too far away.
- 7:32Speaker 1: They's don't have to travel too much and it's good
- 7:34Speaker 1: that all the games are played. There's no other venue.
- 7:38Speaker 1: All the games are played because of the wonderful facilities
- 7:41Speaker 1: down at the Three Heels. Now this Sunday nine o'clock
- 7:45Speaker 1: sees the first birthday of the Radnor Park Junior Park Run,
- 7:48Speaker 1: and there's going to be a few awards given out
- 7:50Speaker 1: and so there's going to be a few little thank
- 7:53Speaker 1: yous and things like that. So I'll be going along
- 7:55Speaker 1: to support the event. So why don't you come along
- 7:57Speaker 1: and check it out. If your child has loads of
- 8:00Speaker 1: energy to burn up, then the Junior Part Run is
- 8:03Speaker 1: just the job. And so that's this Sunday at nine
- 8:06Speaker 1: o'clock as it is every Sunday, and just go along
- 8:11Speaker 1: and I'd love to see you there. Now another little
- 8:15Speaker 1: event that's coming up which starts today, and this is
- 8:18Speaker 1: the new Roomney under thirteen's. They're riding one hundred and
- 8:22Speaker 1: forty seven miles for Young Lives Versus Cancer and they've
- 8:27Speaker 1: set their self a target of one thousand pounds. You
- 8:29Speaker 1: know a lot of money, isn't it one thousand pounds,
- 8:31Speaker 1: But they've actually already raised over that. They've raised fifteen
- 8:35Speaker 1: hundred pound and so they set off tonight and they
- 8:38Speaker 1: will be if you like roughing it, they'll be camping.
- 8:41Speaker 1: And so what I'm hoping to do is and I
- 8:46Speaker 1: think it's hang on, it's just jetmil diary on Saturday
- 8:49Speaker 1: the twenty sixth. I'm hoping to get Paul Egan and
- 8:52Speaker 1: a couple of a couple of the lads and I
- 8:54Speaker 1: think the other Chap's name is Tom, and they want
- 8:57Speaker 1: them to come in and just recap went what it
- 9:01Speaker 1: went like. The weather looks good for him in one respect.
- 9:04Speaker 1: They won't be riding along in pouring rain, but it
- 9:07Speaker 1: could get a bit hot, so they'll have to be
- 9:09Speaker 1: very well hydrated. But they've got a support team and
- 9:13Speaker 1: it's being looking after the boys very well. So Paul
- 9:16Speaker 1: and all you lads good luck's setting off tonight and
- 9:20Speaker 1: we see you in a couple of weeks time. Now.
- 9:23Speaker 1: I heard this song during that during the week and
- 9:25Speaker 1: it immediately took me back to my holiday in Cyprus.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Now you probably know I've got a soft spot for Cypress.
- 9:32Speaker 1: We've been there several times and we've made some great,
- 9:35Speaker 1: great friends with the Plathforse Running Club and they the
- 9:40Speaker 1: Pathforse Running Club. They do all sorts and it's great
- 9:43Speaker 1: talking to Sue Caudrey and she's the she's the boss
- 9:46Speaker 1: as they call her. And they've got a running section,
- 9:50Speaker 1: they've got a walking section, they've got a cycling section,
- 9:54Speaker 1: and they've got a ladies section. Now the ladies section
- 9:59Speaker 1: is actually called Soul Sisters. Now I heard this song
- 10:02Speaker 1: during the week and I thought, I've got to play this.
- 10:05Speaker 1: So this is for the Soul Sisters in Cypress, the
- 10:08Speaker 1: ladies running group over there in Coral Bay. They go
- 10:12Speaker 1: for a run and then they always have a big breakfast
- 10:14Speaker 1: or cakes and all sorts of things ice cream afterwards.
- 10:17Speaker 1: So it is a great club to join if you're
- 10:20Speaker 1: out in Cypress. So this is for you. This is
- 10:23Speaker 1: called Hey, Soul's Sister, and it's by Train.
- 10:29Speaker 2: You're Sweet Long, the swell ever single, Dream Had Dream
- 10:38Speaker 2: and welleting You're the one I have decided.
- 10:43Speaker 3: Who's one a background soul sister.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Ster on the radio stereo the way your.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Fame A Soul sister tonight. And that's for Sue Caudrey
- 11:14Speaker 1: and her Soul Sisters out in Paphos. Now, I know
- 11:17Speaker 1: they won't be listening, but they do chirp in and
- 11:20Speaker 1: have a little listen to the podcast, So I hope
- 11:23Speaker 1: you're going to hear that. And I spect they're out
- 11:25Speaker 1: somewhere having lunche or just taking it easy by the poor.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Good luck to you okay, Now this is well, oh,
- 11:33Speaker 1: this has been so interesting, this report, just finding out
- 11:38Speaker 1: the facts about Now have you played football at your
- 11:41Speaker 1: primary school anytime since nineteen fifty five? Then there are
- 11:46Speaker 1: two words that will conjure up excitement and fond memories
- 11:49Speaker 1: and those two words are Herald Cup. Now, the Harald
- 11:53Speaker 1: Cup was played last Monday, and I've got a little
- 11:56Speaker 1: report here sent in and I'll tell you about that
- 11:58Speaker 1: in a minute. But we're going to start off with
- 12:00Speaker 1: reading out this report. Now, it was a glorious summer's
- 12:03Speaker 1: evening down at Lyd Football Ground last Monday. And now
- 12:06Speaker 1: the evening started with the girls game. Yes they have
- 12:08Speaker 1: a girls competition as well. Now, both teams showed great teamwork,
- 12:13Speaker 1: skill and sportsmanship. The first half thought Sandgate go flyive
- 12:17Speaker 1: nil up and the second half it was one all.
- 12:20Speaker 1: So it really finished Sandgate six Limb one. Now the
- 12:24Speaker 1: Limb goalkeeper she seemed to have been the lady of
- 12:27Speaker 1: the match. She made some great saves and was a
- 12:29Speaker 1: credit to her team. Then came the big one, the
- 12:33Speaker 1: Herald Cup, and this year it was between Sandgate and Hawkins.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Now actually Sandgate had one girl playing, which was nice.
- 12:42Speaker 1: The teams had already met in the group stages finishing
- 12:45Speaker 1: Neil Neil, so both teams knew it could go either way.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Very tense game, both teams striving to get that goal,
- 12:52Speaker 1: some great saves made from both goalkeepers, but it ended
- 12:56Speaker 1: up in the Neil Neil draw and they shared the cup.
- 12:59Speaker 1: I'll tell you a bit more that later. Sharing the Cup.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Now they've also got a third competition and this for
- 13:05Speaker 1: the clubs that are the sorry the schools that have
- 13:08Speaker 1: been in the Herald Cup and didn't make it to
- 13:10Speaker 1: the final. It's called the Consolation Cup and that's going
- 13:13Speaker 1: to be played on the seventeenth of July, which is
- 13:16Speaker 1: a Thursday evening once again. And this is a local
- 13:18Speaker 1: derby at Lyd Town's ground between the Great Stone and
- 13:22Speaker 1: Lyd so anything down there with the two teams so
- 13:26Speaker 1: close together is bound to be a great game. So
- 13:29Speaker 1: a big thank you to nin Bearrassford there from Sandgates School.
- 13:32Speaker 1: She sent me in that report and just a little
- 13:34Speaker 1: follow up on that. The Girls Cup has been going
- 13:36Speaker 1: for three years now and has been won every year
- 13:39Speaker 1: by Sandgates School. Now as for the boys football, well,
- 13:43Speaker 1: the cup was the cup final was seventy first Cup
- 13:47Speaker 1: final was seventy years ago in nineteen fifty five and
- 13:50Speaker 1: was won by High Church of England School. I'll tell
- 13:54Speaker 1: you a bit about that later as well. The first
- 13:57Speaker 1: school to retain the cup was All Souls, who won
- 13:59Speaker 1: it in s sixty two and again in nineteen sixty three.
- 14:03Speaker 1: The first school to win the cup three times in
- 14:05Speaker 1: a row was New Romney in nineteen seventy five, seventy
- 14:08Speaker 1: six and seventy seven. Park Farmer also won it three
- 14:12Speaker 1: times in a row ten years later in eighty five,
- 14:16Speaker 1: eighty six and eighty seven. And the final has taken
- 14:18Speaker 1: place every single year since nineteen fifty five, except when
- 14:22Speaker 1: everything sporty was a hit, and that was hit by
- 14:25Speaker 1: COVID in twenty twenty and twenty twenty one. Now the
- 14:30Speaker 1: winner stats since nineteen fifty five I read like this,
- 14:33Speaker 1: The following schools have won it once. That's Churchill, Hawkins,
- 14:38Speaker 1: Saint Leonard's, Harcourt, Stella Maris and Saint Augustine's. Two times
- 14:43Speaker 1: winners are Cheriton, Saint Einswith's and Mandela. Three times victors
- 14:48Speaker 1: are Hive Hive Bay. Tell you about that in a minute,
- 14:51Speaker 1: and christ Church five times was Great Stone six times,
- 14:56Speaker 1: was Park Farm seven times, All Souls and Dual Spurgeon
- 15:01Speaker 1: eight times, Sangate nine times, New Romney, Saint Nicholas in
- 15:05Speaker 1: brackets there and the most victorious school in those seventy
- 15:09Speaker 1: years is Saint Mary's who've won it eleven times. Now
- 15:13Speaker 1: some of the schools over those years have changed their names.
- 15:16Speaker 1: For example, I have Church of England now I believe
- 15:21Speaker 1: it's Hive Bay, New Romney was formerly a Saint Nicholas,
- 15:26Speaker 1: and I think there's a couple of other name changes there.
- 15:28Speaker 1: And of course a couple of new schools have popped
- 15:30Speaker 1: up in recent years, such as Churchill School. Now. Even now,
- 15:35Speaker 1: the Herald Cup sparks off many memories for thousands of footballers.
- 15:39Speaker 1: I mean, if you go into a pub on a
- 15:41Speaker 1: Sunday morning and there's a team in there, a Folkston
- 15:44Speaker 1: team and if you like some of them are a
- 15:46Speaker 1: bit senior perhaps and you mentioned Harald Cup, well it
- 15:49Speaker 1: will start a wonderful conversation. Everyone's got a memory of
- 15:54Speaker 1: the Herald Cup.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Now.
- 15:55Speaker 1: I did a few sums and worked that nearly fifteen
- 15:58Speaker 1: hundred boys, and in recent years a few girls as
- 16:00Speaker 1: well have played in the Herald Cup final and I've
- 16:04Speaker 1: been receiving some fantastic grayin eld black and white team
- 16:07Speaker 1: pictures from some former winners. Only yesterday I was speaking
- 16:11Speaker 1: to mister Phil Hardin, who has been involved with keeping
- 16:14Speaker 1: the Herald Cup alive for the last forty years. Since
- 16:17Speaker 1: sadly the Folkst and Herald, our local newspaper, doesn't seem
- 16:20Speaker 1: to have any involvement in this special local cup final.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Phil has been the mastermind. He's been finding venues for
- 16:27Speaker 1: the finals. He introduced the girls club and as we said,
- 16:30Speaker 1: there's this other competition called the Consolation Cup between this year,
- 16:35Speaker 1: played between great Stone and lid It told me the
- 16:39Speaker 1: cup was always shared as opposed to penalties because he
- 16:42Speaker 1: didn't think it was fair for one eleven year old
- 16:45Speaker 1: to be the one that missed that penalty, giving the
- 16:47Speaker 1: other school of victory a burden that will weigh very heavily.
- 16:51Speaker 1: And apparently Monday's final was a very even game, ending
- 16:55Speaker 1: in a Neil Neil draw and sharing the trophy, which
- 16:57Speaker 1: seemed appropriate. Future Phil has agreed to come in for
- 17:01Speaker 1: a chat. I do believe he's involved with Kent School's
- 17:03Speaker 1: football as well, so that would be a really interesting program.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Looking forward to that and now it did tell me
- 17:11Speaker 1: that there's somebody down with connections at high the football club.
- 17:14Speaker 1: He thought it was a former groundsman that actually played
- 17:17Speaker 1: in the very first final in nineteen fifty five. So
- 17:21Speaker 1: that's definitely time to get out and do some ferrity
- 17:23Speaker 1: in them. See if we can track down this original
- 17:26Speaker 1: Herald Cup finalist. I will say that my son Sam,
- 17:29Speaker 1: who played for Christ Church School and that was in
- 17:32Speaker 1: the final, was in nineteen ninety five. I went along
- 17:36Speaker 1: to watch that. I was thirty years ago they played
- 17:39Speaker 1: that one. There used to be a pitch I don't
- 17:40Speaker 1: know if it's still there opposite the Sandgate School. You
- 17:43Speaker 1: can't really see it as you're driving along the main road,
- 17:45Speaker 1: but that was. I can't remember who they played either,
- 17:49Speaker 1: but they are still talking about daily Sinclair's a screamer
- 17:53Speaker 1: of a goal from thirty years ago. Right, Well, there's
- 17:58Speaker 1: just so I think I'd love to feel this tune
- 18:00Speaker 1: udio up here with people that have played in the
- 18:02Speaker 1: Herald Cup and got lots of fond memories. It would
- 18:05Speaker 1: be a fantastic local cup that's been playing all those years.
- 18:09Speaker 1: And to be honest that the local papers they just
- 18:11Speaker 1: haven't got the room to print anything these days. It's
- 18:14Speaker 1: so thin the local paper and do you know what,
- 18:16Speaker 1: I nearly bought one the other day It was three
- 18:18Speaker 1: pound twenty. And with the Internet it's going to move
- 18:22Speaker 1: over the years for all the papers. I think the
- 18:26Speaker 1: era of the paperboy might be at an end as
- 18:29Speaker 1: everything goes online, which for us olders is a big shame. Okay,
- 18:33Speaker 1: So there we go. That's the Herald Cup special. If
- 18:35Speaker 1: you've got a fond memory, drop me a memory, drop
- 18:37Speaker 1: me a message, a private message, and when Phil Holden
- 18:41Speaker 1: comes in we will read it out. Okay. So moving
- 18:44Speaker 1: on to some bit of music.
- 18:45Speaker 3: Now.
- 18:45Speaker 1: This is from nineteen ninety eight, and this is a
- 18:48Speaker 1: concord from Share a song from Share called a Belief
- 19:09Speaker 1: where they go from two thousand and seven. There Meek,
- 19:14Speaker 1: Grace Kelly. Now I've just had a message in from
- 19:19Speaker 1: a colleague of mine used to be a presenter here
- 19:21Speaker 1: and a guest as well, Dan Hallett. Dan is currently
- 19:25Speaker 1: in Germany. I think he's just sent me another message.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Oh says thank you that Dan is currently in Germany
- 19:33Speaker 1: working away, but he's coming back at the weekend anyway,
- 19:36Speaker 1: but he plans to ride fifty miles now there is
- 19:38Speaker 1: an event going on down at Hageland's Farm at Burmarsh
- 19:43Speaker 1: organized by the Channel Rotary Rotary Club, and it's a
- 19:47Speaker 1: cycle ride and there are routes of thirty to fifty
- 19:50Speaker 1: or eighty miles available and Dan wants to just wish
- 19:53Speaker 1: his colleagues from the Folks and Cycling Club all the
- 19:56Speaker 1: best for Sunday. Now, this is a really good event
- 19:59Speaker 1: of to be it's gone under my radar. I'm glad
- 20:02Speaker 1: Dan has pointed it out to me. The show's and
- 20:05Speaker 1: charity is the Pilgrim's Hospice and saying that's really close
- 20:09Speaker 1: to all our hearts around here. They do some great fundraising,
- 20:12Speaker 1: but they do need to raise a lot of money
- 20:15Speaker 1: and so I would suggest that if you want to
- 20:17Speaker 1: find out any more about it, just go to the
- 20:20Speaker 1: Folkston No sorry, the Channel Rotary Club page and they've
- 20:25Speaker 1: probably got a drop down menu with events on it
- 20:29Speaker 1: and then check out the cycle right, but it is
- 20:32Speaker 1: this Sunday. It's from Hageland's Farm shop. As you go
- 20:35Speaker 1: down the old A two five nine, just before you
- 20:38Speaker 1: get to dim Church from Folkston, turn right and it's
- 20:41Speaker 1: up there. So good up to Dan and thanks for
- 20:43Speaker 1: getting touched Dan and all the best on a Sunday.
- 20:48Speaker 1: Right now, I'm going to tell you about my weekend,
- 20:50Speaker 1: well part one anyway. I had a busy weekend of
- 20:54Speaker 1: events on both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday saw me at
- 20:58Speaker 1: Kanser Research UK's Pretty Muddy Up at Moat Park in Maidstone,
- 21:02Speaker 1: which is an event where participants work their way through obstacles,
- 21:07Speaker 1: rope ladders and all sorts of ingenious methods to make
- 21:10Speaker 1: sure everybody gets soaking, wet or covered in mud. Now,
- 21:14Speaker 1: the last challenge is to climb up a rope ladder
- 21:16Speaker 1: on the top of an inflatable It's like an inflatable
- 21:19Speaker 1: triangle really, I suppose it's the only way to describe it.
- 21:23Speaker 1: Once you're at the top, you can just sit there
- 21:25Speaker 1: and wait for your colleagues, because you can go down
- 21:27Speaker 1: at five abreast. If you wait too long, there's a
- 21:30Speaker 1: gentleman at the bottom with a host pipe and they
- 21:32Speaker 1: will give you a good old soaking as you slide
- 21:35Speaker 1: down into above of mud and gunge before jogging a
- 21:39Speaker 1: short distance to the finish line where I was were waiting.
- 21:42Speaker 1: Anyone that looked they had any energy left a microphone
- 21:47Speaker 1: in hands ready to have a chat. Now, it was
- 21:50Speaker 1: a long day and there it kind of went like this.
- 21:53Speaker 1: First of all, there were three waves of children went off,
- 21:56Speaker 1: and then there was ten waves of adults and they
- 21:59Speaker 1: were all setting off it fifteen minute intervals. But I'll
- 22:01Speaker 1: tell you what, it was so much fun. You know,
- 22:03Speaker 1: at the finish line people were coming in. Someone coming
- 22:06Speaker 1: in quite clean, actually, because you can you've got the
- 22:09Speaker 1: option to dodge the the obstacles if you want to,
- 22:13Speaker 1: You can sneakily go around them. But some of them
- 22:16Speaker 1: really went for it, especially going down that last slide
- 22:19Speaker 1: like headfirst. Now the day, well, unfortunately the day got
- 22:24Speaker 1: colder and it started to rain and people drifted off.
- 22:27Speaker 1: And in the past the sunshines kept people there. They
- 22:29Speaker 1: stayed all day, brought picnics, had a great day, but
- 22:32Speaker 1: this year it wasn't to be. However, it was brilliant
- 22:35Speaker 1: fun and everybody went home with a lovely mudpack complexion,
- 22:40Speaker 1: including me. Now I didn't go in any near any
- 22:44Speaker 1: obstacles at all, but I was hugged, I was squeezed
- 22:47Speaker 1: and had muddy hands rubbed all over my face. So
- 22:50Speaker 1: I went home looking like I'd been in a mudbath
- 22:52Speaker 1: as well. But the main thing was the winner was
- 22:55Speaker 1: Cancer Research UK, as these events raised thousands to go
- 22:59Speaker 1: towards eradicating this terrible disease that we've all been touched by. Okay,
- 23:04Speaker 1: time for a bit of music now and this is
- 23:06Speaker 1: Room five Oliver Oliver Cheatham and Mateler Radio Folkston Oliver
- 23:39Speaker 1: cheatam there Eightler Okay. So Sunday saw me an early
- 23:46Speaker 1: start as I headed off to Burewater Reservoir for MC
- 23:49Speaker 1: duties on the MIC at the Wadhurst Runners five and
- 23:52Speaker 1: fifteen mile, a trail event around the reservoir now. The
- 23:56Speaker 1: club's chosen charity is the Kent, Surrey and susse Air
- 24:00Speaker 1: Ambulance and last year this race donated a whop in
- 24:03Speaker 1: five thousand pounds towards the cause. This year, five hundred
- 24:07Speaker 1: and twenty two runners took part, one hundred and one
- 24:09Speaker 1: in the five miler and four hundred and twenty one
- 24:12Speaker 1: in the fifteen the course being a mixture of ups
- 24:15Speaker 1: and downs, trails and tarmac which proved very testing for
- 24:18Speaker 1: the runners. A few local folks and based runners made
- 24:21Speaker 1: the journey. Craig Hoveman from South Kent Harriers, who recently
- 24:24Speaker 1: run seventy miles in what they call Endure twenty four event.
- 24:29Speaker 1: He finished in finished the fifteen in two hours twenty
- 24:33Speaker 1: six minutes forty seconds, and folks and Running and Athletic
- 24:37Speaker 1: club members Christoph Klitzier he ran one hour forty nine
- 24:40Speaker 1: at nineteen. Trevor de Vaux, after returning from a tough
- 24:44Speaker 1: mountainous trail run in Switzerland of all places, was back
- 24:47Speaker 1: in one hour, fifteen minutes thirty nine and Jane Wren
- 24:51Speaker 1: she ran two hours forty eight fourteen. And these three
- 24:54Speaker 1: were all in the fifteen miler. Now we were blessed
- 24:57Speaker 1: with dry humid condition compared to the stories I heard
- 25:02Speaker 1: when I got back to Folkston about the torrential rain
- 25:05Speaker 1: that you had in the morning. Honestly we dodged all that.
- 25:07Speaker 1: We were so lucky. Now the run itself celebrated twenty
- 25:11Speaker 1: It celebrated its twenty fifth birthday and as usual, the
- 25:15Speaker 1: brass band played there for a couple of hours. There
- 25:18Speaker 1: was loads of free cake made and provided by Wadhurst
- 25:22Speaker 1: Club members, and a bonus for the runners was free beer.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Yes you heard that right, free beer. It's always there.
- 25:28Speaker 1: It's great. I never seem to get any I've tapped
- 25:31Speaker 1: away in the corner and it's a bit of like
- 25:34Speaker 1: losing my religion. That's me in the corner and I'm
- 25:37Speaker 1: gagging for a drink. And anyway, the lake the local
- 25:41Speaker 1: lake Down Brewery provided two barrels of Sussex Pale Ale
- 25:45Speaker 1: and two barrels of the lovely named Kicking Donkey. Now.
- 25:49Speaker 1: Marshall Smith of Ashford a C. Was the winner of
- 25:51Speaker 1: the fifteen miler, breaking the course record by two minutes
- 25:56Speaker 1: seventeen seconds in a time of one hour twenty three
- 25:59Speaker 1: minutes forty one second, winning himself two hundred and fifty quid.
- 26:04Speaker 1: Big thanks to all the Wadhurst runners, the Marshalls organizers
- 26:07Speaker 1: and volunteers, and big thanks to run director Rachel Wood
- 26:11Speaker 1: and her team from nice Work who so professionally helped
- 26:14Speaker 1: stage the timing and the signage and all her team
- 26:19Speaker 1: just they just made it look so smooth. Okay, time
- 26:23Speaker 1: of a bit of music in our time is racking on.
- 26:25Speaker 1: We haven't even got a guest in and we've got
- 26:26Speaker 1: so much to tell you about. Now this song there
- 26:29Speaker 1: was a Tom Betty's Tom Petty song in the playlist,
- 26:32Speaker 1: but I've changed it for another Tom Petty song. Now
- 26:35Speaker 1: have you got one of these people that you know
- 26:38Speaker 1: anywhere at work, at home, you know what I mean
- 26:42Speaker 1: about the name of this song. And they think they're
- 26:46Speaker 1: right all the time. Sometimes even when they know they're wrong,
- 26:50Speaker 1: they think they're right. I know one or two of
- 26:53Speaker 1: people like this. This is a great track. This is
- 26:55Speaker 1: Tom Petty and is called I Won't Back Down, Well.
- 27:08Speaker 3: Down.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Well, let's take that rule the World. That's from two
- 27:27Speaker 1: thousand and six. Okay, we're coming to the end of
- 27:30Speaker 1: the show now. It's been really packed, considering we haven't
- 27:33Speaker 1: had a guest then, there's been just though. There is
- 27:35Speaker 1: so much sport out there in folks then and it's
- 27:38Speaker 1: good to see. So that's it for me. Just to
- 27:41Speaker 1: let you know that the Dover Waterfront Park Run is
- 27:44Speaker 1: canceled this Saturday, that's twelfth July year Saturday, that is
- 27:49Speaker 1: due to the annual regatta taking place there in the
- 27:52Speaker 1: harbor there. I'll be back on Saturday, hopefully with Ad
- 27:56Speaker 1: if he's still in one piece. He's been away in
- 27:58Speaker 1: the Dominican Republic two weeks on his honeymoon, and I
- 28:03Speaker 1: hope to catch up with him then on Sunday, and
- 28:06Speaker 1: I'd love you to come along to the Radnepark Junior
- 28:08Speaker 1: Park run. They'll be celebrating their very first birthday and
- 28:13Speaker 1: it's going to be a special day. But what I'm
- 28:15Speaker 1: going to do now, I'm going to play out with
- 28:17Speaker 1: one of the very last songs that played at Live
- 28:19Speaker 1: aid in July nineteen eighty five, and it's Paul McCartney
- 28:23Speaker 1: with the Beatles song Let It Be. But on stage,
- 28:27Speaker 1: I've been checking it out. He was on stage with
- 28:29Speaker 1: David Bowie, Bob Geldorf, Alison Moye and Pete Townsend. What
- 28:34Speaker 1: a lineup and if you look at the lineup from
- 28:36Speaker 1: nineteen eighty five, there are just some superstars there. So
- 28:41Speaker 1: without further ado, let's see make sure I've got this right, keV, Yes,
- 28:48Speaker 1: there is. I found it so it got hidden away there.
- 28:53Speaker 1: This is the last, very last song. I won't pro
- 28:55Speaker 1: you want to hear all of it now. I'm going
- 28:57Speaker 1: to have to cut that bit out in the podcast
- 28:58Speaker 1: when it goes out. This is the Beatles Let It Be.
- 29:03Speaker 1: This was the last song at Live Aide, last song
- 29:07Speaker 1: before last nineteen eighty five, forty years ago. Enjoy it
- 29:12Speaker 1: and I'll see you Saturday.
- 29:14Speaker 2: Redundans, she standing right in front of me speaking words
- 29:20Speaker 2: of wisdom, let it be Let it be Let it
- 29:27Speaker 2: be let it be Let it be.
- 29:32Speaker 3: Wis bored of wisdom, Let it be
