- 0:32Speaker: Cheers, everyone.
- 0:33Speaker 3: Cheers.
- 0:33Speaker 3: Thank you for being on the show.
- 0:36Speaker: My name is Dana, aka Kabanaman, aka Dr.
- 0:40Speaker: Roof.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Cheers.
- 0:42Speaker 3: All the things.
- 0:43Speaker 3: All the things.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Cheers to you.
- 0:44Speaker 3: I met you through the tiki community as far as you were a stop on PDX Autica the first year.
- 0:53Speaker 3: And then you were also a stop on PDX Atica last year.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Or this year, I should say the second year.
- 0:58Speaker 3: It just happened this July.
- 1:01Speaker 3: So let's talk a little bit about the Tiki bar.
- 1:04Speaker 3: And then I do have tons of questions around roofing, too, if that's okay.
- 1:08Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:09Speaker 3: For those of you watching, you can see we are sitting in the bar.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Definitely watch till the end.
- 1:13Speaker 3: There will be, you'll get a full walkthrough so you can see it.
- 1:17Speaker 3: But for those of you listening, how big of a space is this?
- 1:20Speaker 3: How big is the whole do you know?
- 1:22Speaker 3: Square space?
- 1:23Speaker: I know I honestly don't know.
- 1:24Speaker: Yeah.
- 1:24Speaker: I've never measured it.
- 1:25Speaker: Yeah.
- 1:25Speaker: I do know that the house is, I think, built late 70s.
- 1:31Speaker: So the lots were better than they are these days.
- 1:34Speaker: Yes.
- 1:36Speaker 3: So it's probably a 10,000 square foot lot, counting the front yard and the backyard, I'm assuming.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Sure.
- 1:42Speaker: Yeah.
- 1:43Speaker: I have no I I'm really bad spatially.
- 1:46Speaker: And uh but it's good sized yard.
- 1:50Speaker: Um and so, you know, we originally just wanted the little tiki spot right here, but it kind of took over.
- 1:59Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:00Speaker: And my wife is very forgiving.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Which is nice.
- 2:04Speaker: But what's really cool is she really brings it to life.
- 2:07Speaker: I I build the big stuff and I got this kind of vision, but uh, you know, she finds all the little doo-daws.
- 2:13Speaker: She's great with plants, so everything is green.
- 2:17Speaker 3: You have some amazing plants too that aren't local, obviously, to Oregon.
- 2:22Speaker: Right.
- 2:23Speaker: We we try to we try to make it look tropical, but we gotta get stuff that's hardy for the Oregon winters.
- 2:28Speaker: Some things we bring into the house, uh, other things we just uh kind of create a a greenhouse like zone for it.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:36Speaker 3: What got you interested in like the tiki home bar space?
- 2:40Speaker 3: Like, did it just start with a bar top itself, or like was it your travels?
- 2:46Speaker 3: Because you and your wife love to travel.
- 2:47Speaker 3: We do.
- 2:48Speaker 3: So was it something because you'd seen it out and about?
- 2:51Speaker: Like what um I've always loved the tropics, that's first and foremost.
- 2:55Speaker: Yeah.
- 2:55Speaker: I used to teach scuba diving.
- 2:57Speaker: Um, I just I love anything tropical.
- 3:00Speaker: So I really wasn't in the tiki scene.
- 3:03Speaker: Uh, but I did start, I had this idea when the kids play area, which is where we're sitting right now, um, it uh it was time for them, they were older, time for them to give it up.
- 3:15Speaker: And I had this vision of just kind of creating a tropical space.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:19Speaker: And then I got online and found a couple of forums where people are showing their home bars and uh mainly just kind of see what other stuff is out there.
- 3:30Speaker: And I stumbled across a deal that used to be going on called Tiki Con.
- 3:34Speaker: And so I met some wonderful people there at TikiCon.
- 3:40Speaker: And so, yeah, I've gotten tikified, but I'm I'm not a purist because I I'm definite parrot head.
- 3:48Speaker: Love Jimmy Buffett.
- 3:49Speaker: Yeah.
- 3:49Speaker: And I love the open, beachy kind of feel.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Totally.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Yeah, and so did it what was like the first piece that you got, or where was the first like thing that you like that was like was that the bar top, or was it something like no, no, there was absolutely nothing here.
- 4:05Speaker: There was uh the wood that that entrance is made out of used to be a castle for the kids and swing with a pirate ship that was up top.
- 4:15Speaker: And so we tore that apart and I built that, and the bar was just right over there, just a little tiny little thing, and so yeah, that was it.
- 4:24Speaker: And we bought plants, we bricked this, had a big sand pit with a fire pit in it.
- 4:30Speaker 3: So it's just grown over time, it's just grown, yeah.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:34Speaker 3: You were just telling us this is your 21st year of having the home bar.
- 4:39Speaker 3: And so some major things that you've added over the years the waterfall, the tide pool, the pirates cove.
- 4:48Speaker: Yes, the volcano has the treasure in there, and I've got a little fog machine in there and um red lights to make it seem like and okay, you can kinda I don't know if this can hear it.
- 4:59Speaker: The little seagulls and the ocean waves.
- 5:02Speaker: I've got sound effects in here for that.
- 5:04Speaker: In the in the uh volcano, it's rumbles and bloop, bloop, bloop, like it's lava bubbling.
- 5:11Speaker: I don't know.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:12Speaker: And then back in the corner where the ancient ruins are that I built, I have jungle birds and monkey sounds.
- 5:19Speaker: So yeah, those are the three big projects the ruins, the cave, and the tide pool waterfall.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Was it?
- 5:27Speaker 3: I know that you built a lot of this on your own.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Was it trial and error, like trying to figure out how to do the waterfall and the tide pool?
- 5:34Speaker: Oh, the tide pool, especially.
- 5:35Speaker: Nobody I because I didn't, you just heard that rush.
- 5:40Speaker: I didn't want water just constantly coming out.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Sure.
- 5:43Speaker: I wanted to be like a wave coming out from the pier, right?
- 5:45Speaker: Well, there's nothing online.
- 5:48Speaker: I did find an electronic device where you fill up a tank and it signals it to open a lid or something.
- 5:55Speaker: And I thought, there's gotta be a mechanical way to do this.
- 5:58Speaker 3: Sure.
- 5:58Speaker: So I eventually figured it out on my own.
- 6:01Speaker 3: And then what about the rock structures itself and stuff?
- 6:04Speaker: Like man, that one is really cool.
- 6:06Speaker: You mix mortar with a product called TruPak.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Okay.
- 6:10Speaker: And uh it's great vertical and overhead adhesion.
- 6:14Speaker: I've also seen, since you're a realtor, I have seen some really cool stuff done in some homes.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 6:20Speaker: The coolest one I saw, the guy made it this one area like an old castle.
- 6:25Speaker: So it's big stones and everything.
- 6:27Speaker: And then he goes over to the wall and he pushes it open to the poker room.
- 6:32Speaker 3: Oh, fine.
- 6:32Speaker 3: So it's a hidden door.
- 6:33Speaker: Oh, yeah, it just swivels open, and when it closes, the seams, he did all of the seams really deep on all of the rocks.
- 6:39Speaker: So you honestly don't see it, it just closes and it's gonna be.
- 6:48Speaker 3: I do social media freelance because of my background in marketing.
- 6:52Speaker 3: Um, John and Michelle had reached out for PDX Autica One.
- 6:56Speaker 3: For those of you that are like, what the heck is PDX Autica?
- 6:59Speaker: It's not a stripping thing.
- 7:01Speaker: It sounds like it, but it's not.
- 7:03Speaker 3: And it's not.
- 7:04Speaker: Or at least they may told me not to.
- 7:06Speaker 3: Yeah, we're not allowed to talk about it.
- 7:08Speaker 3: You signed a waiver.
- 7:09Speaker 3: No, I'm just kidding.
- 7:10Speaker 3: It really isn't like that.
- 7:11Speaker 3: But it what it it is, PDX is the airport code for Portland.
- 7:16Speaker 3: A lot of people refer to Portland as PDX, so that's where that comes from.
- 7:19Speaker 3: Auticas for the tiki, exotic bar type situation.
- 7:24Speaker 3: Um, but it's a really cool home bar tour where you come to spaces like this and see um what people do with their homes.
- 7:31Speaker 3: And as a realtor, my mind was blown.
- 7:33Speaker 3: I was like, oh, I love all these cool different spaces.
- 7:36Speaker 3: And some are um indoor, some are outdoors, some are grander, some are a little bit on the smaller scale, but they're all different and unique, and it's like really cool.
- 7:46Speaker 3: One thing I found so far in the PDX Autica Tour was also just like such a neat community.
- 7:53Speaker 3: Everybody likes being on vacation, and they basically have built a space where it feels like they're on vacation.
- 7:59Speaker 3: And that's what I love about your bar is like when you walk out here, it does feel like you're in the tropics and you're on vacation.
- 8:05Speaker 3: It has all the sounds and the water, and like, do you just sit out here and relax after a long day?
- 8:10Speaker: Um well, actually, I I'll drive around doing my bids for Dr.
- 8:14Speaker: Roof in the morning.
- 8:15Speaker: Come here.
- 8:16Speaker: I don't I've been sitting a lot driving, even though I'm climbing up on roofs.
- 8:19Speaker: I want to just stand for a while.
- 8:21Speaker: So I lay all my paperwork on the bar, pour myself a glass of wine, cheese and crackers, something like that, and and um do do my work there while my assistant is in the office in the house.
- 8:33Speaker: And it's it's a nice way to listen to this.
- 8:38Speaker: Yeah, and enjoy your space.
- 8:40Speaker: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 8:41Speaker 3: Well, you were talking about um you were on a different podcast and I was here behind the scenes, and you had mentioned um was it Good Morning Oregon?
- 8:51Speaker 3: What was it on the you were on?
- 8:53Speaker: Yeah, yeah.
- 8:53Speaker: Um, okay, so Wayne Garcia uh retired with KPTV Channel 12, and he uh is a customer of mine, and we hit it off because he's parrot head as well.
- 9:08Speaker: And uh so he's been over here a number of times, and it was right after I built the cave, and Wayne and I were in the cave having uh some rum, and he just looked at me and goes, Okay, you gotta let me bring the crew here.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:22Speaker: It's just too cool.
- 9:23Speaker: So we had just a small group of people, and uh there's even more stuff built since then.
- 9:29Speaker: Totally.
- 9:30Speaker: Um, yeah, and and so now every year when we do our big party, uh everybody brings a toy as well because KPTV along with Les Schwab, they do their toy drive.
- 9:39Speaker: And so we get just a big pile of toys to take in for that.
- 9:42Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:42Speaker 3: You were saying though on the um on Ray's podcast, um, tiki with Ray, if anybody's listening, you had mentioned when you did um that episode, you were shocked at like some of the people in the comments who are like, Oh, must be nice.
- 9:57Speaker 3: And you were like, This has taken me 20 years, and you've done it like a little piece at a time.
- 10:02Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:03Speaker 3: And like, so talk about that journey a little bit.
- 10:05Speaker 3: Like, how do you decide?
- 10:06Speaker 3: Like, because you probably get some ideas, and then you probably have to be like, Well, I can only do this this year, or I'm only gonna add this this year.
- 10:13Speaker: It's uh we don't get too many ideas anymore just because we got no more space.
- 10:18Speaker 3: That's true.
- 10:19Speaker: Yeah, if I win the lottery, I'm gonna try to buy the property behind us and expand and expand.
- 10:24Speaker: Yeah, yes, then there's a lot of things.
- 10:25Speaker 3: You can turn that into an Airbnb.
- 10:27Speaker: Oh, and there'll be a there'll be a pool with a giant wave machine so we can surf.
- 10:32Speaker 3: Yeah, that would be amazing.
- 10:33Speaker: Yeah, I mean, why not?
- 10:34Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:35Speaker: No, I so yeah, I don't I don't know what inspires it other than when I expanded and I made just the tine pool.
- 10:45Speaker: I didn't have the waterfall yet.
- 10:47Speaker: I just kind of got the idea and and did it.
- 10:50Speaker: It took me forever, but I did it.
- 10:52Speaker: Um, we had a cherry tree back in the corner and we had this ugly old metal shed.
- 10:58Speaker: Well, you couldn't see it because of the cherry tree, and it died.
- 11:01Speaker: So when that was gone, I'm looking at the house behind, I'm looking at my ugly shed.
- 11:06Speaker: I thought, well, what if I made like what looks like ancient ruins, like an old settlement, Spanish fort in the Caribbean, whatever.
- 11:16Speaker: And so, you know, it's mainly stuff like that.
- 11:18Speaker: And then after doing that, I have so much fun working with the the uh Tru Pac stuff making this.
- 11:24Speaker: Yeah, I looked in the other corner and went, oh, I could build a cave.
- 11:29Speaker: So it's yeah, I'm sure all these ideas come with alcohol.
- 11:33Speaker 3: I'm sure yeah, I mean, a lot of great ideas too, some bad ones as well.
- 11:37Speaker: Oh, absolutely.
- 11:37Speaker: I've had those too.
- 11:38Speaker 3: Yeah, we all have.
- 11:39Speaker 3: What about the plants?
- 11:41Speaker 3: Like, did you do any research on like how to get certain plants or where to buy them?
- 11:45Speaker 3: Like, how did you decide on the plant stuff?
- 11:48Speaker: That's my wife.
- 11:49Speaker: Okay, yeah, Julie.
- 11:50Speaker: Uh, she knows plants, yeah.
- 11:53Speaker: And um, yeah, we the Audrey in the sand pit area.
- 11:59Speaker: Yeah, Audrey is giant.
- 12:01Speaker: We named her Audrey because it started as a little plant like this and kept growing and growing.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:07Speaker: And so we took her outside, but she can't stay outside in the winter.
- 12:11Speaker: But she's gotten so big.
- 12:13Speaker: Well, I build walls around the sand pit every year in the wintertime so that it's a greenhouse.
- 12:20Speaker: And we put little heaters in there because we love Audrey.
- 12:25Speaker 4: Yeah, and she's gonna be able to get it.
- 12:26Speaker: And then Sheila, she this is Sheila 2 because the first Sheila was an Australian fern that died one winter where it was really, really cold and the heat lamps just didn't help.
- 12:35Speaker: Uh so Sheila 2 is an is a New Zealand fern, which is a little more hardy than than the Australian fern.
- 12:43Speaker: Looks the same, it doesn't grow as fast.
- 12:46Speaker: So it's taking her a while to grow.
- 12:48Speaker 3: And you leave her out here because that's huge too.
- 12:51Speaker 3: I don't know how you would move that.
- 12:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:53Speaker: So we put heat lamps on it in the winter time, and um yeah, we don't really we've got heaters in here for when we're meeting out here in the winter, but we don't really have those on for her.
- 13:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:04Speaker 3: And then what about covering this?
- 13:06Speaker 3: Was this always covered out here?
- 13:08Speaker 3: And or when did that like, were you like, I'm gonna be out because we are in Oregon.
- 13:12Speaker 3: Yes.
- 13:12Speaker 3: So we do get the rain.
- 13:14Speaker 3: Like when did you decide to do that?
- 13:16Speaker: That one was uh because of Dosh.
- 13:18Speaker: Um every year we used to have um what we called our our tropical Christmas parties.
- 13:24Speaker: And it started in the house before I'd even built any of this.
- 13:28Speaker: I've always had a tropical bent.
- 13:30Speaker: So in in December, people come in and we do that.
- 13:34Speaker: Well, the parties got bigger and bigger, and then we had some friends whose uh parents were retired military, so they had um what do they call this?
- 13:43Speaker: It's not a grange, but it's uh American Legion place that we could use.
- 13:48Speaker: So we would have our tropical Christmas parties there.
- 13:53Speaker: Well, we then rented a place out a golf course place, it was great, but the next year they like more than doubled the price of renting it.
- 14:04Speaker: And that's when I went, you know, with that money I could just build a cover here.
- 14:07Speaker: Yeah, and we could have a party here.
- 14:10Speaker: There we go.
- 14:11Speaker 3: Perfect.
- 14:12Speaker 3: Well, speaking of roofs, talk to me a little bit about Dr.
- 14:16Speaker 3: Roof.
- 14:16Speaker 3: What kind of roof services do you guys offer?
- 14:18Speaker 3: What areas do you serve?
- 14:21Speaker: Uh Tri-County area.
- 14:22Speaker: Okay.
- 14:22Speaker: Been around for 34 years, 34 years.
- 14:28Speaker: Yeah.
- 14:29Speaker: And uh it's just roof maintenance.
- 14:31Speaker: So we basically do everything except put on a new roof.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:37Speaker: So uh we're we're doctors, but we're more like rehab doctors, not the O B G Y N or something.
- 14:44Speaker 3: Yeah, not bringing, you're not new, brand new roofs.
- 14:48Speaker: But making life saving.
- 14:50Speaker 3: Yes.
- 14:50Speaker: We're with those seniors trying to keep them alive.
- 14:53Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:54Speaker: Uh and you know, it's been a good business.
- 14:57Speaker: It's always had its ups and downs.
- 14:58Speaker: Um you know, employees come and go and that kind of stuff.
- 15:03Speaker: Got one guy, he Jason has been with me for 21 or 22 years now.
- 15:08Speaker: He he's a lifer.
- 15:10Speaker: Um, it's just been he's been dynamite.
- 15:13Speaker 3: If you're thinking about making a lifestyle upgrade, maybe wine country, acreage, grape views, or do you want to go downtown?
- 15:22Speaker 3: Let's talk.
- 15:22Speaker 3: Either way, I want to help you level up.
- 15:25Speaker 3: Reach out now and we'll make your dreams come true.
- 15:28Speaker 3: Um What are some like big mistakes you see homeowners make that impacts a roof in a negative way?
- 15:35Speaker: That homeowners do.
- 15:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:37Speaker: Uh try repairs.
- 15:39Speaker: Um and and just ignoring it.
- 15:43Speaker: That's the biggest thing.
- 15:45Speaker 3: What about pressure washing?
- 15:46Speaker 3: I think a lot of people think like, oh, pressure washing, it actually damages the roof.
- 15:50Speaker 3: It doesn't matter.
- 15:50Speaker: It looks nice, but you have stripped years out of the roof.
- 15:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:54Speaker: Right.
- 15:55Speaker 3: What are some um maintenance tips and tricks that you besides how hiring you?
- 16:00Speaker 3: Like, but if there's little things they can do in between your services that you would recommend?
- 16:06Speaker: You know, uh okay, a lot of people think, you know, if I cut the trees down, it's gonna help the roof.
- 16:11Speaker: In actuality, one thing I've learned is the ultraviolet does more damage than the moss.
- 16:16Speaker: Moss does its damage, you want to treat that.
- 16:18Speaker: Yeah, but uh south sides always go faster than the north side.
- 16:22Speaker 3: Interesting.
- 16:23Speaker: Yeah, that sun just beats the heck out of it.
- 16:25Speaker 3: Is there any like moss myths that you because in Oregon, for those of you listening outside of Oregon, we do get a lot of moss because we have a lot of moisture and things.
- 16:35Speaker 3: Um, and some people freak out about it.
- 16:37Speaker 3: Like even at home inspections, they're like, the roof has moss.
- 16:40Speaker 3: And it's like it's Oregon, a lot of roofs have moss.
- 16:42Speaker 3: But like, is there a certain level of moss that's like really bad or things that they should when should they treat it?
- 16:48Speaker: Or well, you know, the the the most ideal thing to do is to stay on top of it so you don't have to physically remove moss.
- 16:55Speaker: Just chemically treat the roof.
- 16:57Speaker: There's lots of different products out there.
- 16:59Speaker: We use a few different ones.
- 17:01Speaker: Uh, guardian roof cleaner, walk away roof cleaner, zinc, you know.
- 17:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:06Speaker: So if you just treat it, the winter rains are pretty well gonna wash it out.
- 17:11Speaker: If it's big moss, it won't.
- 17:12Speaker: So we we'll do a light brushing first, just to kind of loosen it up or or actually clean it off.
- 17:18Speaker: Every now and then we've got a customer that wants the roof clean now.
- 17:22Speaker: And since we don't want to pressure wash, it's expensive, but the crew just gets up there on the roof and is just picking away gently the moss.
- 17:32Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 17:32Speaker: And so uh the biggest recommendation I have is to just treat it every year with some kind of a moss deterrent, so then you're not beating up your roof trying to clean it off.
- 17:43Speaker: Now, if you've got debris up there, that's another issue because if you've got valleys or gutters and closed soffit, that's gonna create some problems because of water dams.
- 17:54Speaker 3: Are there certain roof products that you see that are have a longer like longevity that are lasting longer than certain roofs?
- 18:02Speaker 3: Or like are you like, oh, this is a great roof because it's blah blah blah.
- 18:05Speaker 3: Are there certain roof products that you really need to do?
- 18:07Speaker 3: Oh, as far as the roofing material itself.
- 18:09Speaker: Yeah, you know, uh when I started 30 years ago, it was nothing but shake.
- 18:14Speaker: So I am more familiar with that.
- 18:18Speaker: Obviously, I haven't done shake.
- 18:20Speaker: Well, we do it once in a while, but overall it's mainly composition, tile roofs, and with the comp I know um there's a lot of good products out there.
- 18:30Speaker: So I I couldn't really say any one is dynamite.
- 18:34Speaker 1: Sure.
- 18:34Speaker: Um I just asked the guys at the supplier, you know, what do you you know, what do you guys hear?
- 18:39Speaker: What do you think?
- 18:39Speaker: And sure.
- 18:41Speaker 3: And so it's probably more based on brand and things like that.
- 18:44Speaker: And and also you can get uh a lower quality version of each style within that one brand.
- 18:51Speaker: You know, certainty's got different levels of a roof.
- 18:54Speaker: You've got presidential, you've got our architectural.
- 18:56Speaker: Nobody's making three-tab composition anymore because nobody wants to see that.
- 19:01Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure.
- 19:02Speaker: Um and as far as roof treatment, there's a lot of different products.
- 19:07Speaker: Yeah.
- 19:08Speaker: Uh I know the Guardian Roof Cleaner is really good because it crystallizes to the roof, you get a warranty, uh, 30 months, so two and a half years.
- 19:16Speaker: But if you've got a dark roof, the first year it shows up kind of a milky white film.
- 19:21Speaker: And we have some really nice high-end homes that are like black presidential.
- 19:28Speaker: No, you don't want that.
- 19:30Speaker: So just every year use the walk-away or zinc or whatever.
- 19:34Speaker 3: Is there a certain time of year that you recommend clients reach out to you or their local roofing company for maintenance?
- 19:42Speaker 3: Like, is it better to get it done in September versus March?
- 19:45Speaker 3: Like, is there a certain time of year that makes more sense?
- 19:48Speaker: Everybody's different.
- 19:49Speaker: We have some customers that they have us out every month from like October through January because everything's coming off of the trees.
- 19:59Speaker 1: Sure.
- 19:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:00Speaker: And the leaves don't dump all at once.
- 20:02Speaker: So if they call us out, if they wait too long, oh, I want to wait till all the leaves are down, well, they've got gutters overflowing.
- 20:09Speaker 3: Oh, for sure.
- 20:10Speaker: And if they have us do it too soon, the gutters get clogged again the next week.
- 20:15Speaker: So so they'll just have us out on a regular basis in that time, and then let once springtime comes, you know, they just let it go until the next fall.
- 20:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:24Speaker 3: When people have you out on a regular basis, how long is that service normally?
- 20:28Speaker 3: Are you there like an hour?
- 20:29Speaker 3: Does it take Boy?
- 20:31Speaker: It varies.
- 20:31Speaker: Well, yeah, I'm sure by square footage too.
- 20:34Speaker: There are some customers that have us out every month and we kind of average it.
- 20:39Speaker: Here's your price each visit, but I'm averaging it because in the summertime we're there, it takes us longer to set up the ladder than to get the place clean.
- 20:47Speaker: But in the wintertime, we're there for a while, and depending on the house, we be might be there 30 minutes, we might be there for two hours.
- 20:55Speaker: It just depends on the house.
- 20:56Speaker 3: How many of your clients are like hiring you on a regular basis where it's like come every month for the winter months?
- 21:03Speaker: Boy, our monthlies are probably, you know, uh 20-ish that are monthlies.
- 21:11Speaker: But we have a lot of quarterlies.
- 21:13Speaker: I have no idea how many of those, and then other biannuals.
- 21:16Speaker: And we even have some people that just say, Yeah, man, I don't want to, I'm not gonna remember to call you.
- 21:20Speaker: So just put me down on your list every year, come clean the roof and do whatever.
- 21:24Speaker 3: Well, the reason I ask is for anyone listening, just so they have an idea, like, oh shoot, should I be doing this quarterly, monthly, annually for sure, annually, if you want your roof to l last that's full 30 years, or avoid any accidental leaks and stuff, because if you have someone on your roof maintenance, they're gonna notice like, hey, just so you know this section needs some extra work or attention, things like that.
- 21:48Speaker: Oh yeah.
- 21:48Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 21:49Speaker: But if no one's going up there, you're not gonna know until it's too late and something's dripping into the house and the part that really annoys me is uh landlords.
- 22:00Speaker 3: Oh, for sure.
- 22:01Speaker: Holy cow, we've got property management companies that use us.
- 22:04Speaker: And it's like, dude, you need to replace the roof.
- 22:08Speaker: Yeah, it's time.
- 22:09Speaker: It's beyond time.
- 22:10Speaker: Yeah.
- 22:11Speaker: You want me to fix a little leak?
- 22:13Speaker: Where does it start?
- 22:15Speaker: Yeah.
- 22:16Speaker: Yeah.
- 22:16Speaker: Come on.
- 22:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:18Speaker: That would be hard.
- 22:18Speaker: I don't understand that mentality because it's what's protecting everything underneath.
- 22:24Speaker 3: Right.
- 22:24Speaker 3: And everything insured underneath as well.
- 22:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:27Speaker 3: That's would be if the whole roof caved in from a landlord's perspective, like that's gonna cost way more than just replacing the roof.
- 22:34Speaker: Right.
- 22:34Speaker 3: That's crazy.
- 22:35Speaker 3: Right.
- 22:35Speaker: Stay on top of it, maintain it.
- 22:37Speaker: You'll get the longest life out of it.
- 22:39Speaker: And when it's time, sorry, you you chose to use this as an investment.
- 22:45Speaker: So please stay on top of it, landlords.
- 22:48Speaker: Yes, come on.
- 22:49Speaker 3: Please.
- 22:50Speaker 3: Listen up, landlords.
- 22:51Speaker 3: As a business owner, you mentioned you've owned Dr.
- 22:56Speaker 3: Rue for 30.
- 22:58Speaker: 34 years.
- 22:59Speaker: This is the 34th.
- 23:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 23:00Speaker 3: What have you learned and how have you grown as a business owner over the 34 years?
- 23:07Speaker: To be quite honest, I've learned that I was never meant to be a businessman.
- 23:13Speaker 1: Surprise!
- 23:14Speaker: I I have so many friends that cannot turn off their business, whether it's their own business or the their company.
- 23:22Speaker 1: Right.
- 23:23Speaker: They just can't turn it off.
- 23:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:25Speaker: And man, uh sure I think about it at times, especially when you know everybody needs it done now.
- 23:32Speaker: Yeah, I can't get it out of my mind.
- 23:34Speaker: But man, I'm really good at just shutting it off and ignoring the business.
- 23:38Speaker: We could have had a much bigger business if I would have been uh been more driven that way.
- 23:45Speaker: Uh, but you know what?
- 23:47Speaker: I life is important to live with your your spouse and your kids and your friends, right?
- 23:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 23:55Speaker: Yeah.
- 23:55Speaker 3: I like that you are better at work life balance.
- 23:57Speaker 3: I sometimes struggle in that way.
- 23:59Speaker 3: It's hard for me.
- 24:00Speaker 3: Even on vacation, I'll like I try to be very mindful of it.
- 24:05Speaker 3: Like I'm gonna give Rylan all my attention from these hours to these hours, but when she's asleep, even when we're on vacation, I'm like doing emails, following up with people, all that stuff, because it's hard for me to like shut down.
- 24:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:16Speaker 3: But I I commend you that you can just be like, I'm on vacation.
- 24:20Speaker 3: Sorry.
- 24:21Speaker: And it's what's really funny is that uh day to day in the evening, I might think about business, but as soon as I'm at the airport, nope.
- 24:29Speaker: It's yeah, and you know, Jason might call me, he's my right-hand man, he can run everything without me.
- 24:35Speaker: Uh so he might call me a question about something, but he's really good at just kind of leaving me alone and letting you be on vacation.
- 24:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:43Speaker 3: Well, and it's nice that you do have someone that you can trust the business to when you're gone.
- 24:48Speaker 3: Because if that wasn't the case, you might not be able to unplug as much when you travel.
- 24:55Speaker: No, definitely.
- 24:56Speaker 3: You guys do travel quite a bit.
- 25:00Speaker 3: What are some of the like your favorite places that you've gone or some of your like top spots?
- 25:07Speaker: Man, that is tough.
- 25:08Speaker 3: You know, because you've been to a lot of really cool spots.
- 25:11Speaker: We we've been to a lot of cool places.
- 25:13Speaker: Uh 2019, just before COVID shut everything down, we had a really cool trip.
- 25:19Speaker: Uh friend of ours at church has a friend, well, he's passed on now, but his friend is a professor who takes students over to Israel every year.
- 25:29Speaker: And he was gonna go along and says, Hey, you can come along.
- 25:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 25:32Speaker: Oh, great.
- 25:33Speaker: And then I thought, well, how often am I gonna be in the Middle East?
- 25:37Speaker: I wonder how things are in Egypt.
- 25:39Speaker: And I did some searching, and it seemed safe enough.
- 25:44Speaker: And then so we went to Jordan first, and then to Egypt, and then to Israel.
- 25:50Speaker: So we were gone for two plus months, and it was fabulous.
- 25:55Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a long time to be gone.
- 25:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 25:58Speaker: I I don't like being gone that long.
- 26:00Speaker 3: Sure, but but it's hard, especially areas like that.
- 26:03Speaker 3: You're not gonna go back and forth.
- 26:04Speaker 3: Like once you're there, see what you can see, yeah, yeah.
- 26:08Speaker: Soak it up.
- 26:09Speaker: And then um I love the tropics, so we we've been to Hawaii a lot.
- 26:14Speaker: I love the Hawaiian Islands, been to the Caribbean a fair amount.
- 26:16Speaker: This next February, I'm finally gonna go to this island I've always wanted to go to.
- 26:21Speaker 4: Okay.
- 26:22Speaker: Dominica.
- 26:23Speaker: Not Dominican Republic, Dominica, Southern Caribbean, little island that when I taught scuba diving, I read about it in a dive magazine and went, oh man, I gotta go.
- 26:35Speaker: And I never have.
- 26:37Speaker: And it's got everything, it's not big on beaches, which is probably why it's not famous.
- 26:43Speaker: It has a couple of really nice beaches, but man, the diving is excellent.
- 26:47Speaker: It's mountainous, it has the second largest boiling lake in the world.
- 26:51Speaker: Uh, but it's an eight-hour hike to get there and back.
- 26:54Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, not for me.
- 26:55Speaker: Yeah, and um 365 rivers, you know, there's waterfalls galore and jungle galore.
- 27:02Speaker: I'm so looking forward to it.
- 27:04Speaker 3: What got you into diving?
- 27:05Speaker 3: Like what sparked that bug for you?
- 27:07Speaker: Probably watching Cousteau with my dad as a kid.
- 27:10Speaker: Oh, really?
- 27:11Speaker: Probably, yeah.
- 27:12Speaker 3: And do you dive every time you're in a tropical area?
- 27:16Speaker 3: Is that still a big part of your journey?
- 27:18Speaker: It's not big because my wife doesn't dive, but I I try to get it in now so that I don't have to renew because even though I was an instructor, a lot of resorts, I found out one once.
- 27:29Speaker: I hadn't dove in three years, and they said, Well, you gotta take a refresher course.
- 27:33Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 27:34Speaker: And I'm like, come on, man, this is like riding a bike.
- 27:37Speaker: Sure.
- 27:37Speaker: I have dove so many times, but you know, they wouldn't let me.
- 27:42Speaker: Yeah.
- 27:42Speaker: So I snorkeled.
- 27:44Speaker 3: So you just keep up the diving in case you want to do it.
- 27:47Speaker: I make sure to get in a dive every year when we're you know, last year we just kind of threw in an extra trip to Hawaii because it's like, oh, I want to get in some diving, and you can get a pretty decent flight to Hawaii for Alaska and then Hawaiian Airlines for sure.
- 28:04Speaker 3: Uh what is it about diving that you like?
- 28:06Speaker 3: Like what is it about it that spoke to you?
- 28:09Speaker: It's very otherworldly.
- 28:10Speaker: You are in a foreign environment, um, and you just can't you can't see it.
- 28:17Speaker: You know, you see those guys for real swimming around.
- 28:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 28:21Speaker: They're if you can't see their puffer fish that have lights.
- 28:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 28:24Speaker: I know it was cruel.
- 28:25Speaker: I really didn't want to kill them like that, but you know, I needed light bulbs.
- 28:29Speaker 3: But it swallowed the light.
- 28:31Speaker: Um, I I don't know.
- 28:32Speaker: I just I obviously got hooked on it as a kid.
- 28:35Speaker: Got hooked on the tropics.
- 28:38Speaker: Um, and so that's what got me into diving, which is kind of odd because junior high, I was terrified of the water.
- 28:47Speaker 3: Oh, really?
- 28:48Speaker 3: Uh it's more all the equipment for me.
- 28:50Speaker 3: I don't mind the water.
- 28:51Speaker 3: I don't know if and I have I've never dived.
- 28:54Speaker 3: I've snorkeled, but I just don't know how I would do with all the equipment on my face.
- 28:59Speaker 3: How do you get used to that?
- 29:00Speaker 3: Or is that just by doing it?
- 29:01Speaker 3: Yeah, just taking it.
- 29:02Speaker: That's that's why you have the pool sessions when you take your course and you do your little skills in the open water, and you just kind of gradually work into it.
- 29:10Speaker: And you find out pretty quick if this is too uncomfortable for you.
- 29:15Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure.
- 29:15Speaker 3: Do your kiddos dive or did they ever get into me?
- 29:19Speaker: Kind of pisses me off.
- 29:22Speaker 1: Because it's like I think so much.
- 29:26Speaker: Yeah, I wanted so much to be able to do this.
- 29:28Speaker: Um, my wife unfortunately has a really difficult time, and I get this because I've had a few students with this, just snorkeling, she just can't do it.
- 29:36Speaker: As soon as the face gets in the water, she just starts to hyperventilate.
- 29:40Speaker: We tried uh wow, talk about great trips.
- 29:44Speaker: We had a fabulous trip to Tahiti, and we tried a beautiful shallow beach area.
- 29:50Speaker: She as soon as the face hits the water, she just can't do it.
- 29:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:53Speaker: So, you know.
- 29:54Speaker 3: Have you had any dangerous encounters with wildlife?
- 29:57Speaker 3: I know some people are so scared of it because they're nervous about sharks or jellyfish or I'm more nervous about shark when I have surfed.
- 30:05Speaker: I I have not surfed a lot, but I've surfed enough that I actually think about it because I know that that's putting out a a sight and a sound that sounds like food and looks like food to them.
- 30:15Speaker 3: Totally.
- 30:15Speaker: Diver, you don't sound like food, you don't look like food.
- 30:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 30:18Speaker 3: Well, and I would assume diver, you have a little bit more of a visual of what's around you, but when you're surfing, you're on top.
- 30:25Speaker 3: So you don't really know if something's below you.
- 30:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 30:27Speaker 3: So that would make sense that it would feel a little bit more dangerous.
- 30:31Speaker: The the most dangerous thing that ever happened to me was uh thankfully I had been an instructor.
- 30:37Speaker: Because we had a cruise and Julie took the kids, we were real little back then.
- 30:42Speaker: She took the kids to go do their thing.
- 30:45Speaker: I'm gonna go get a dive in.
- 30:47Speaker: And I was down about 40 feet, and you got your regulator, and the hose comes around.
- 30:52Speaker: I didn't realize it, but the hose had separated.
- 30:55Speaker 1: Oh.
- 30:55Speaker: It came apart.
- 30:56Speaker: And I so I didn't know until I breathed in a full breath of water.
- 31:00Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 31:01Speaker: And so I'm 40 foot down, my brain is saying, get down the surface now!
- 31:05Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 31:06Speaker: And you can't.
- 31:07Speaker 4: Right.
- 31:07Speaker: And so as I'm choking and gagging and hacking and getting my alternate, clear it out, and and slowly make my way to the surface.
- 31:14Speaker: And I thought afterwards, man, if I hadn't had as many dives under me, if you were just a novice diver, because that's not a deep dive, he'd have been dead.
- 31:23Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 31:24Speaker 3: Well, in panic and all the things, yeah.
- 31:26Speaker 3: So that is good that you have to.
- 31:28Speaker: That's the most dangerous dive.
- 31:29Speaker: I've I've been with shark tons of times, not a big deal.
- 31:33Speaker 3: Interesting.
- 31:34Speaker 3: Um, what is like the biggest shark you've seen?
- 31:37Speaker 3: Have you seen some pretty big ones or have they all been?
- 31:40Speaker: And it was a nurse shark, so it really doesn't count.
- 31:42unknown: Got it.
- 31:43unknown: Yeah.
- 31:43Speaker 3: They're the friends.
- 31:45Speaker 3: That's so funny.
- 31:47Speaker 3: Your home might be worth more than you think.
- 31:49Speaker 3: Curious what your equity looks like?
- 31:51Speaker 3: I'll run the numbers for you.
- 31:53Speaker 3: No pressure, just clarity.
- 31:54Speaker 3: Please reach out anytime.
- 31:56Speaker 3: Let's look at this together.
- 31:58Speaker 3: Um, I know that family is really important to you.
- 32:02Speaker 3: You're very involved with your kiddos.
- 32:04Speaker 3: Do you want to give a plug for your daughter's book?
- 32:08Speaker: Oh.
- 32:08Speaker: I mean, I yeah, I was planning on that.
- 32:12Speaker 3: No, I this is a surprise.
- 32:14Speaker 3: He didn't know he's gonna ask that, but I'd love to give a Sword of Alila.
- 32:18Speaker: It's a gonna be a three-book series.
- 32:20Speaker: She has made two.
- 32:21Speaker: The second one just came out.
- 32:23Speaker: Sword of a Lila, book one is sort of a Lila Genesis.
- 32:27Speaker: Sort of a Lila.
- 32:29Speaker: The second one is sort of a Lila something.
- 32:31Speaker 4: Okay.
- 32:32Speaker: I've read it, okay?
- 32:33Speaker: I did a number of times because I helped edit it as well.
- 32:37Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 32:38Speaker: I'm just saying, I'm not a bad dad.
- 32:39Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 32:40Speaker: Uh so I don't do a lot of reading, but you know what?
- 32:44Speaker: I was able to read through it real easily.
- 32:45Speaker: It's a fantasy kind of thing with elves and stuff and quest, you know, that kind of thing.
- 32:51Speaker 3: Which is very popular right now.
- 32:52Speaker: Yeah, and it was uh it was a good read.
- 32:54Speaker: Um, so sort of a Lila.
- 32:56Speaker: Get online.
- 32:58Speaker: Yeah, check it out.
- 32:59Speaker 3: Support a local author.
- 33:01Speaker: Yeah, yeah.
- 33:02Speaker 3: And upcoming, because this is her first series, her first book.
- 33:05Speaker 3: Is this something she wants to do?
- 33:06Speaker 3: Like, is this just a passion project, or is this something she wants to do going forward?
- 33:10Speaker: She actually originally wrote it when she was in high school.
- 33:13Speaker 3: Oh, wow.
- 33:14Speaker: And she never did anything with it.
- 33:15Speaker: And so um, constant encouragement, she finally decided to give it a shot, reread it, and she went, Oh, I gotta work on this.
- 33:25Speaker 1: Sure, yeah.
- 33:26Speaker: Um, and so was it last Saturday?
- 33:30Speaker: Yeah, last Saturday we had book signing party here.
- 33:33Speaker 3: That's so fun.
- 33:33Speaker: And that was that was pretty cool.
- 33:35Speaker 3: That's awesome.
- 33:35Speaker: Um and had if I went into a store and had seen a book this thick, I wouldn't have bought it because I don't read a lot.
- 33:43Speaker: But I read through it pretty fast.
- 33:45Speaker 3: That's awesome.
- 33:46Speaker 3: Is she doing an audio version of it?
- 33:48Speaker 3: Do you know?
- 33:48Speaker: Yes, she is.
- 33:49Speaker: Cool.
- 33:49Speaker: Friend of mine next door, Devin, is uh he's got a little recording studio, so he's oh cool, he's uh doing that with her.
- 33:56Speaker 3: Oh, that's awesome.
- 33:57Speaker 3: I uh do a lot of audiobooks because I'm in the car a lot.
- 34:00Speaker 3: So I don't always have time to sit down and read, but I love a good audiobook.
- 34:04Speaker 3: And I can't, so many people want to suggest like murder mysteries or like podcasts around that.
- 34:10Speaker 3: And I'm like, I'm meeting strangers at strangers' houses.
- 34:13Speaker 3: The last thing I want to do is listen to some murder mystery and be like, oh, I hope I don't end up on a podcast.
- 34:20Speaker 3: There's a ton.
- 34:26Speaker 3: So like I like the fantasy stuff because obviously I'm not gonna run into elves, unfortunately, at my next shelling.
- 34:32Speaker 3: I mean, it'd be like Portland area.
- 34:34Speaker 3: Yeah, you never know.
- 34:35Speaker 3: That's so true.
- 34:36Speaker 3: Thank you so much for having us to your home in your space.
- 34:40Speaker 3: I appreciate the conversation.
- 34:42Speaker 3: If anybody wants to reach out, yes, of course.
- 34:45Speaker 3: If anybody wants to reach out to you around roofing, how's a good way for them to get in touch with you?
- 34:50Speaker: Well, uh here this is a little bit tricky because it's Dr.
- 34:54Speaker: Roof, but now there's a company in the area called Dr.
- 34:58Speaker: Roof Inc.
- 34:59Speaker: That's not me.
- 35:00Speaker: I was here first.
- 35:02Speaker 3: That's why they had to be the Inc.
- 35:04Speaker: But the state said, well, they've got Inc.
- 35:06Speaker: on it, so therefore they get the same name.
- 35:08Speaker: Right.
- 35:08Speaker: So uh, but uh my website is drroof.biz, D-R-R-O-O-F.
- 35:15Speaker: Dr.
- 35:16Speaker: Roof.biz, B-I-Z.
- 35:18Speaker 1: Okay.
- 35:18Speaker: And um, yeah, you can find us online and and there's no yellow pages anymore.
- 35:24Speaker: So no, there's definitely not, yeah.
- 35:26Speaker: Um, and you know, uh I gotta I started something a long time ago along these these lines uh because Jason and I are always seeing stupid stuff.
- 35:36Speaker: And so we started to do this thing called drinking with the doctor.
- 35:40Speaker 4: Oh, how funny.
- 35:41Speaker: And we'd be in the bar just talking about some stupid thing we came across that week.
- 35:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 35:47Speaker: Uh uh you have inspired me.
- 35:48Speaker: I'm gonna start that up again.
- 35:50Speaker 3: Yeah, you should.
- 35:51Speaker 3: That'd be cool.
