- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm Ury Rodriguez. I sing for a band called day Seeker.
- 0:04Speaker 2: We are playing Good Things in Australia in a couple
- 0:07Speaker 2: of weeks and we're super excited.
- 0:09Speaker 3: Fantastic Rory. Thanks for joining us today. Ray.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Oh yeah, thanks for having me man pleasure.
- 0:15Speaker 4: So, as you say, day Seeker will be heading to
- 0:16Speaker 4: Australia next month. Is part of the Good Things Festival,
- 0:19Speaker 4: which picks off in Melbourne. Of the set but fifth
- 0:21Speaker 4: and hit Sydney and Brisbane. I the consecutive days not
- 0:25Speaker 4: long now at all, Brian, you packed.
- 0:26Speaker 1: It ready to go, I think so.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a little it's a little nerve wracking because
- 0:33Speaker 2: we unfortunately parted ways with our guitar player very recently.
- 0:40Speaker 2: So we have a good friend of ours who's going
- 0:43Speaker 2: to be filling in for us, and so these are
- 0:45Speaker 2: our first shows with him.
- 0:47Speaker 1: So we're we're just we're trying to get rehearsed.
- 0:50Speaker 2: And make sure that everything's good and that our live
- 0:53Speaker 2: show stays intact, because I feel like we really care
- 0:56Speaker 2: about our live show being good. So outside of that,
- 1:00Speaker 2: we're really really excited to come and play.
- 1:02Speaker 4: Yeah, no pressure at all. I have any first gig
- 1:04Speaker 4: in front of fifty thousand people, mate.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Yeah, more I feel more worse for him because, yeah,
- 1:10Speaker 2: it's some of these Well, I think we get a
- 1:12Speaker 2: warm up show for our side show and like Melbourne
- 1:14Speaker 2: or something, so I think he'll get to play like
- 1:17Speaker 2: nine hundred people and then yeah, I little jump times fifty,
- 1:20Speaker 2: you know, for the festivals.
- 1:21Speaker 1: But he's he's a pro though, he's he's going to
- 1:24Speaker 1: do great. I'm excited.
- 1:25Speaker 4: I'm going to say we should probably add there as
- 1:27Speaker 4: a bit of a disclaimer that it might be his
- 1:28Speaker 4: first show in Welvet of the side show, but he's
- 1:30Speaker 4: going to be bloody awesome straight off the bat in he.
- 1:34Speaker 1: He will be.
- 1:34Speaker 2: He's I think he's been to Australia in his other
- 1:37Speaker 2: band too, so I think he's great. He's he's one
- 1:41Speaker 2: of the best guitar players I've ever met in my life.
- 1:43Speaker 1: So I have faith he's going to do great.
- 1:45Speaker 4: A lot better endorsement may will run with that one.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Yeah, the good things.
- 1:50Speaker 4: We've got a fantastic lineup, mate, it's facing twol there's
- 1:53Speaker 4: weaves of machine ed, knock loose garbage, lorn A shore list.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Goes on man. But are there any fans there that
- 1:59Speaker 3: you haven't played with before.
- 2:03Speaker 1: No, I mean, it's so funny.
- 2:04Speaker 2: I feel like we've I feel like we've done festivals
- 2:07Speaker 2: with a knocked loose Lorna Shore.
- 2:09Speaker 1: It's just funny.
- 2:10Speaker 2: I feel like at some point you stop being like surprised,
- 2:14Speaker 2: you know, like it's it just it feels like it's
- 2:16Speaker 2: sort of a revolving door of who's going to be
- 2:18Speaker 2: there because we've we've done shows with all these bands,
- 2:20Speaker 2: but it's a stacked lineup.
- 2:22Speaker 1: I mean, I'm excited.
- 2:23Speaker 2: It's exciting just to go and play a festival in
- 2:26Speaker 2: Australia because it's our it's our first time and I
- 2:29Speaker 2: feel like we've we did some of our first festivals
- 2:32Speaker 2: and you're up in UK a couple of months ago
- 2:34Speaker 2: and it was kind of cool to see like the
- 2:36Speaker 2: differences in that versus the US. So I'm excited to
- 2:40Speaker 2: go to Australia, honestly in the summertime, because every time
- 2:43Speaker 2: we go it's July and it's it's always so hot
- 2:45Speaker 2: here and then it's raining and thunder over in Australia.
- 2:49Speaker 2: So we're we're excited to go there when it's a
- 2:51Speaker 2: little warmer and just kind of experience what that's.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Like, yeah, and it's an extremely varied lineup.
- 2:57Speaker 4: That's all my looks. You go, everyone ranging from yourselves
- 2:59Speaker 4: too on the show. So are you personally a fan
- 3:02Speaker 4: of the festival line not to cover a white bardy
- 3:04Speaker 4: genres or are you more old school and you like
- 3:06Speaker 4: it ought to be a more consistent No.
- 3:09Speaker 1: I I'm stoked.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Anytime we get to do a festival because it feels
- 3:13Speaker 2: like it's sort of like summer camp for a day.
- 3:16Speaker 2: You always up with friends that you haven't seen in
- 3:19Speaker 2: a long time or bands that you've toured with, and
- 3:23Speaker 2: it just feels like it's a big collection of people
- 3:26Speaker 2: in the scene and yeah, and they always have some
- 3:29Speaker 2: stacked headliner and so it's really nice. I feel like
- 3:31Speaker 2: it's a workday where you you might wake up and
- 3:34Speaker 2: get some food, hang out, get ready to play, and
- 3:38Speaker 2: then it feels like the rest of the day is like,
- 3:40Speaker 2: who do you want to go see?
- 3:41Speaker 1: And you know who's set? Should we go catch?
- 3:44Speaker 2: And you have a drink, you know, get another bite
- 3:46Speaker 2: and yeah, we always usually catch whoever the headliner is.
- 3:49Speaker 2: I mean, we've seen Slipknot, System of It down, Sleep
- 3:53Speaker 2: Token like like so many bands. No, doing festivals is
- 3:58Speaker 2: like it's a very fun experience and it feels like
- 4:00Speaker 2: it's a really cool way to kind of I almost
- 4:03Speaker 2: kind of looked at festivals as like Spotify in real life,
- 4:07Speaker 2: where it's like they pay a flat fee to go
- 4:09Speaker 2: into this thing, and somebody who maybe has like kind
- 4:12Speaker 2: of hurt our name but wasn't sold on us might
- 4:15Speaker 2: just have a dead gap in their schedule and they're like, well,
- 4:17Speaker 2: we should go see day Seeker and see what their
- 4:20Speaker 2: live set is, and we might grab a lifelong fan
- 4:23Speaker 2: just from doing the festival because they might just pop
- 4:25Speaker 2: over to watch us. So we're we're super excited, really
- 4:29Speaker 2: excited to play this one.
- 4:31Speaker 4: Yeah, that's really interesting too, man I what was so
- 4:33Speaker 4: good about what you just said? Then, as you said
- 4:35Speaker 4: we might grab a lifelong fan, like you're actually interested
- 4:39Speaker 4: in fans on an individual level. You didn't say we
- 4:41Speaker 4: might grab a heap of fans if you get just
- 4:43Speaker 4: that one and make the difference on it.
- 4:46Speaker 3: It does.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Yeah, that would be the hope that we hopefully grab
- 4:50Speaker 2: several new fans. But no, but it really I mean, yeah,
- 4:55Speaker 2: it's how we eat is people buying tickets to our
- 4:57Speaker 2: shows and buying a T shirt just and it's our
- 5:01Speaker 2: livelihood and just getting to play our music live in
- 5:03Speaker 2: front of people who want to see it. So I
- 5:05Speaker 2: feel like festivals are like a very cool way to
- 5:08Speaker 2: grab a bunch of new potential fans who might not
- 5:11Speaker 2: have heard of your band.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Fully.
- 5:13Speaker 4: Yeah, now I've always runned my like, what's the like
- 5:15Speaker 4: backstage at festivals on this with so many different bands
- 5:18Speaker 4: on like, is it like back at school when you
- 5:19Speaker 4: go to the middle hedge in one corner and on
- 5:21Speaker 4: the other end of the park And did they also
- 5:23Speaker 4: the concrete.
- 5:26Speaker 2: No, it's funny, there's not really. Yeah, they don't really
- 5:28Speaker 2: separate you by genre or anything. I think like our
- 5:31Speaker 2: green room was we were definitely I think we were
- 5:34Speaker 2: next to Breaking Benjamin, which is cool.
- 5:36Speaker 1: We know some of those guys, But then I've.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Seen it where they used is a few doors down
- 5:41Speaker 2: or the main is like next to you know, like
- 5:44Speaker 2: it's any any mix of bands. It doesn't feel like
- 5:46Speaker 2: there's a real true rhyme or reason. We've been next
- 5:50Speaker 2: to Kublai Khn straight from the path like it's and
- 5:53Speaker 2: I think we exist too in a weird world where
- 5:55Speaker 2: it's like we we are softer and can be just
- 5:59Speaker 2: as straight upand but we also have songs that have
- 6:01Speaker 2: like metal roots and screaming.
- 6:04Speaker 1: So it's funny.
- 6:05Speaker 2: We've done tours where it always feels like we're either
- 6:08Speaker 2: we're like the heaviest rock band on the bill or
- 6:11Speaker 2: we're the softest metal band. Like it's we kind of
- 6:15Speaker 2: stick stick out a little bit because we have a
- 6:17Speaker 2: lot of melody in our music, but we're not afraid to,
- 6:20Speaker 2: you know, have a breakdown or a riff and a
- 6:22Speaker 2: screaming part thrown in. But no, it's yeah, everybody just
- 6:27Speaker 2: kind of respects each other's space and you just kind
- 6:29Speaker 2: of get ready play your show and it's a really
- 6:33Speaker 2: positive experience. You might go to catering and just see,
- 6:36Speaker 2: you know, somebody you idolized as a kid.
- 6:38Speaker 1: It's a very it's a very wild experience for sure.
- 6:41Speaker 4: Yeah, you mentioned before that this is your first time
- 6:44Speaker 4: coming to show you mate, so basically we've got no
- 6:46Speaker 4: idea what to expect from you guys' lives, So run
- 6:49Speaker 4: as through a typical day, think you show and what
- 6:50Speaker 4: we can expect.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Sure, I guess I should clarify it's our first festival
- 6:55Speaker 2: in Australia. We've done some like we've done some club
- 6:57Speaker 2: touring before. Yeah, it's just we have one of the
- 7:02Speaker 2: best sound people in the industry. Her name is Sarah.
- 7:06Speaker 2: We care a lot about our live show sounding good,
- 7:09Speaker 2: looking good. It is funny because I was I was
- 7:12Speaker 2: just saying on another interview, I do feel like our
- 7:14Speaker 2: show is probably better experience in a dark venue like
- 7:19Speaker 2: a club, where we can control the lighting and stuff.
- 7:21Speaker 2: I know we're going to probably be playing at like
- 7:23Speaker 2: peak sunlight, so I feel like it's a little it's
- 7:27Speaker 2: a little strange. I just I feel like our lighting
- 7:30Speaker 2: show and our and the mood that we can control
- 7:33Speaker 2: when we have a full control of production makes a
- 7:36Speaker 2: big difference.
- 7:37Speaker 1: But we're so excited.
- 7:39Speaker 2: We did a few festivals in the US just like
- 7:42Speaker 2: a month or two ago, and they were and we
- 7:44Speaker 2: were playing when the sun was out and it was
- 7:46Speaker 2: still a blast, just like a ton of people come
- 7:48Speaker 2: to watch. So we're very grateful. It's going to be
- 7:51Speaker 2: a good time really.
- 7:52Speaker 4: Now, you mentioned before one good thing about festival is
- 7:55Speaker 4: that someone might stumble across your band. It's never heard
- 7:57Speaker 4: of you before, So just say there is someone coming
- 7:59Speaker 4: to things you've never heard of day theeter, What three
- 8:02Speaker 4: songs of your should they listen to, but I know
- 8:04Speaker 4: what to expect.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Oh man.
- 8:09Speaker 2: I would say pill Moonlight definitely is a song they
- 8:12Speaker 2: should check out. I'd say Without Me is another good
- 8:16Speaker 2: song for them to check out and then crawl back
- 8:19Speaker 2: to my coffin is my third pick.
- 8:22Speaker 1: And it's funny that there's a few.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Songs off our new album that we've never played live before,
- 8:27Speaker 2: and Australia is actually going to be the first the
- 8:30Speaker 2: first place that gets to hear some of these live,
- 8:32Speaker 2: so it's going to be very very cool kind of
- 8:35Speaker 2: debuting them there.
- 8:36Speaker 4: Nice And you've also got a couple of side shows
- 8:39Speaker 4: either side of Good Things with Banks Arcade, Montgomery and Hendrick.
- 8:43Speaker 4: So the first one is at the Corner Hotel in
- 8:45Speaker 4: Melbourne on December third, and you've got Crowbarrn Brisbane on
- 8:48Speaker 4: the ninth. So you sort of touch on this before
- 8:50Speaker 4: the lighting and stuff. But how different of those club
- 8:52Speaker 4: shows going to be to the outside festival shows.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Very different.
- 8:57Speaker 2: We sort of intentionally picked smaller clubs. We probably could have,
- 9:03Speaker 2: you know, done more like a thousand or a two
- 9:05Speaker 2: thousand cap room, but we kind of just wanted to
- 9:07Speaker 2: do a smaller room and just sell them out super quick.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Some of those smaller shows though, are like they can
- 9:14Speaker 2: almost be sometimes more fun than a festival because if
- 9:18Speaker 2: you're headlining a smaller room and it's a really intimate setting,
- 9:21Speaker 2: you know that every person in that room is there
- 9:24Speaker 2: for your band and there to celebrate your music, versus
- 9:27Speaker 2: a like I said, a festival, you might have ten
- 9:30Speaker 2: thousand people who are a die hard fans and they're
- 9:33Speaker 2: there to watch them play. But yeah, you might have
- 9:35Speaker 2: you know, thirty or forty thousand who are just like.
- 9:38Speaker 1: I'm just checking it out. I don't know if I
- 9:39Speaker 1: like you yet or not.
- 9:40Speaker 2: And so I feel like headlining shows always feel a
- 9:44Speaker 2: little more rewarding because it's a longer shows. It's like
- 9:47Speaker 2: harder work, but I feel like it's more rewarding because
- 9:51Speaker 2: everybody is there for you and they're there to support
- 9:53Speaker 2: your band. So we're really excited for those side shows
- 9:57Speaker 2: and we'll definitely be back to do like a full
- 10:00Speaker 2: proper headlining in Australia soon.
- 10:02Speaker 4: Yeah, it actually gave me a good question mate, Like
- 10:05Speaker 4: you say, you like playing to somebody like good things.
- 10:07Speaker 4: Some people out there might not know you, and then
- 10:09Speaker 4: at your own shows you know that they all do.
- 10:11Speaker 4: So do you approach shows differently, because, let's say, good things,
- 10:15Speaker 4: you've got to win over people that might not hurt
- 10:17Speaker 4: you before, and the other one you've actually already got them.
- 10:19Speaker 4: So do you approach it actually thinks for that.
- 10:23Speaker 1: I wouldn't say so.
- 10:25Speaker 2: I do feel like I believe myself and the guys
- 10:28Speaker 2: get it's almost like a give and take of If
- 10:31Speaker 2: we start performing and the crowd is chaotic and crazy
- 10:35Speaker 2: and giving us a lot of good energy back, it
- 10:37Speaker 2: feels like it fills us with the same energy, and
- 10:40Speaker 2: so there's more adrenaline and more excitement. But a festival
- 10:45Speaker 2: can still be exciting in just the sense of, like,
- 10:47Speaker 2: holy shit, there's a lot of people watching us right now.
- 10:51Speaker 2: It almost feels like the stakes are higher at a
- 10:53Speaker 2: festival because you want to you want to put on
- 10:55Speaker 2: a good impression for somebody if it's the very first
- 10:58Speaker 2: time that they're seeing you live. But I wouldn't say
- 11:02Speaker 2: I feel like it's all kind of the same, though
- 11:04Speaker 2: I do feel like it's funny you say that it
- 11:06Speaker 2: is kind of Mentally, it does feel like that, like
- 11:10Speaker 2: the first or second song they're like, I don't know,
- 11:12Speaker 2: and then by it feels like by the end of
- 11:14Speaker 2: the set, it feels like we've kind of won them over,
- 11:17Speaker 2: and the applause is a little louder, and it feels
- 11:19Speaker 2: like the energy feels better in the crowd. But honestly, yeah,
- 11:24Speaker 2: we have a lot of love for Australia. I have
- 11:25Speaker 2: a lot of faith at the festival shows. Are they're
- 11:28Speaker 2: going to be great. I'm excited to play them.
- 11:31Speaker 4: No, and You're gotta be toured on the back of
- 11:32Speaker 4: your sixth studio album, Preacher in the Dark Night, that
- 11:35Speaker 4: came out on October twenty four, so I was going
- 11:37Speaker 4: to be in a couple of weeks private.
- 11:38Speaker 3: How's the early reception being Did people take to it
- 11:41Speaker 3: like yat.
- 11:42Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely, it's overwhelmingly positive. It's sometimes a comment here
- 11:49Speaker 2: and there, but it's negative. Might sting her jab a
- 11:52Speaker 2: little bit, but I think we got our first week
- 11:55Speaker 2: numbers back and it tripled or quadrupled our prior release.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Our streaming numbers are up higher than they've ever been
- 12:04Speaker 2: are it feels like our shows are selling faster than
- 12:07Speaker 2: they did before. It's it's all positive vibes over here.
- 12:11Speaker 2: It's a very surreal experience to have that record out
- 12:15Speaker 2: to the world. But we're we're very proud of it,
- 12:17Speaker 2: very very happy that everybody else gets to listen to
- 12:19Speaker 2: it now.
- 12:20Speaker 4: Nice and for the sake of people who might not
- 12:22Speaker 4: have heard it yet, Like, tell us a bit more
- 12:23Speaker 4: about the album musically and what you've gone for the
- 12:26Speaker 4: stow around with it.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean we've kind of embraced, you know, more
- 12:32Speaker 2: of a pop structure sound to our band, and we
- 12:36Speaker 2: all listen to a lot of pop music outside of
- 12:38Speaker 2: being in the rock scene, and so it's cool to
- 12:41Speaker 2: I've heard I've seen people call us like a boy
- 12:43Speaker 2: band with guitars, which I think is maybe not entirely accurate,
- 12:47Speaker 2: but I can see what he's saying. But yeah, it's
- 12:51Speaker 2: it's just pop structured rock music. This whole new album
- 12:56Speaker 2: is quite dark and more eerie and horror leaning, I
- 13:01Speaker 2: would say, And it's kind of our biggest artistic swing
- 13:05Speaker 2: at doing some weird and interesting stuff but still trying
- 13:08Speaker 2: to remain accessible and just write music that we love
- 13:12Speaker 2: and believe in and very deeply personal lyrics. Seems that
- 13:17Speaker 2: a lot of people relate to these common themes of
- 13:21Speaker 2: falling out some relationships and heartbreak, and yeah, it seems
- 13:25Speaker 2: to be going over super well, I feel like if
- 13:27Speaker 2: you like, if you like you know, pop rock music
- 13:31Speaker 2: and darker, spookier vibes. I think you would really enjoy
- 13:35Speaker 2: this record if you give it a spin.
- 13:37Speaker 4: Nice all right, Well, thanks very much for you time, bro,
- 13:39Speaker 4: it's been a pleasure speaking with you. Day Seeka Here
- 13:41Speaker 4: for Good Things from December fifth. Their own shows on
- 13:44Speaker 4: the third of the ninth, so check them out.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Thanks, Chris, appreciate it. It
