- 0:00hey everybody this is your gm kill your bag road
- 0:02dom is here to give you episode three of the
- 0:04stack and shed series now in this series we're
- 0:06going to do a deep dive on all 32 teams what
- 0:09are their problems what needs to be fixed what
- 0:12can be fixed and how can they fix okay now we're
- 0:15going to cover a few different topics and those
- 0:17topics include what went wrong what do they need
- 0:20stack or shed draft picks One move I would do
- 0:25in their cap space. Now, in this episode, we're
- 0:27going to cover the Giants. Yes, I know. Everybody's
- 0:30been talking about the Giants and where they're
- 0:32going to go from here now that they've hired
- 0:34John Harbaugh and whatnot. So we're going to
- 0:35do a deep dive with them. So buckle up. It's
- 0:38going to get crazy. All right, let's get into
- 0:46it. So what went wrong in the Giants season?
- 0:48And I would venture to say it was more lows than
- 0:51highs. And the reason why I say that is because
- 0:53we knew that coming into this season, both Brian
- 0:56Dable and Joe Shane were on the hot seat. And
- 0:59we knew that this team had to take a step forward
- 1:01in the right direction in order for them to keep
- 1:03their jobs. But unfortunately, that wasn't the
- 1:06case. Now, we could play the blame game all day,
- 1:08but the fact of the matter is everybody needed
- 1:11to play better. There wasn't just one person
- 1:14that is excluded from criticism. Everyone deserves
- 1:17it to some degree. And it doesn't help when you
- 1:20blow leads as well. Here's just some of the notable
- 1:23ones. Just refresh your memory, okay? Week two
- 1:26against the Cowboys. You had a 10 point lead
- 1:30against them and you lost. Week five against
- 1:33the Saints. You had an 11 point lead and you
- 1:36lost again. Week 7 against the Broncos, you had
- 1:39a 19 -point lead and you lost. Week 9 against
- 1:43the 49ers, you had a 7 -point lead and you lost.
- 1:46Week 10 against the Bears, you had a 10 -point
- 1:49lead and you lost. Week 11, you had a 7 -point
- 1:53lead against the Packers and you lost. Week 12
- 1:56against the Lions, you had a 10 -point lead and
- 1:59you lost. And you have nobody to blame but yourself.
- 2:03Even the quarterback play was inconsistent. In
- 2:06the six games that Russell Wilson started, he
- 2:08was 119 attempts for 69 completions, 831 passing
- 2:13yards, three touchdowns, three interceptions,
- 2:15seven yards per attempt, and a 58 completion
- 2:17percentage. In the three games that Jameis Winston
- 2:20started, he was 66 attempts for 37 completions.
- 2:24567 passing yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions,
- 2:278 .6 yards per attempt, and a 56 .1 completion
- 2:30percentage. In the 13 games that Jackson Dart
- 2:33started, he was 339 attempts for 216 completions,
- 2:382 ,272 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, five interceptions,
- 2:436 .7 yards per attempt, and a 63 .7 completion
- 2:46percentage. Now out of those three, Jackson Dart
- 2:48played his best with less. Russell Wilson can't
- 2:51say that, nor Jameis Winston. Defensively, they
- 2:54were night and day. There'll be one or two games
- 2:56where they're playing their best ball and they're
- 2:58really getting after the quarterback and they're
- 2:59making big plays. And then there's three to five
- 3:01games where they're doing the opposite. And mind
- 3:04you, this is a defense that has Brian Burns,
- 3:07Kayvon Thibodeau, Abdul Carter, Dexter Lawrence,
- 3:09Javon Holland. Understand this, my fellow football
- 3:12junkies. This is a production -based business.
- 3:15And when you're not producing, they're going
- 3:16to let you go. Case in point, that's why the
- 3:19Giants fired their defensive coordinator, because
- 3:21you know why? The defense wasn't playing well.
- 3:24They were 28th in the league, and they allowed
- 3:2725 .8 points per game, 359 .5 yards per game,
- 3:315 .8 yards per play, and 46 touchdowns. They
- 3:35were 16th in pass defense, and they allowed 214
- 3:38.2 passing yards per game, 6 .2 passing yards
- 3:41per play, and 25 passing touchdowns. They were
- 3:4431st in run defense, and they allowed 145 .3
- 3:48rushing yards per game, 5 .3 rushing yards per
- 3:51play, and 21 rushing touchdowns. Now, I understand
- 3:54that Brian Burns had a really good year, but
- 3:56he's only one person. Dexter Lawrence didn't
- 3:59do anything this season. 31 tackles and a half
- 4:01a sack? Kayvon Thibodeau, he could have done
- 4:04more. 25 tackles, two and a half sacks? Abdul
- 4:06Carter, 43 tackles and four sacks? Unacceptable,
- 4:10especially for somebody that wanted LT's number.
- 4:13Now, with that being said, what do the Giants
- 4:15need? And that is a veteran head coach and better
- 4:17drafting. Now, let's be honest here, and I know
- 4:19this might be a hot take. I believe that John
- 4:21Harbaugh is the best coach the Giants have had
- 4:24since Tom Coughlin. And the reason why I say
- 4:27that is because John Harbaugh is going to bring
- 4:29two things to the Giants organization that they've
- 4:32been longing for for a very long time. Stability
- 4:35and consistency. You always know what you're
- 4:38going to get with John Harbaugh. You can't say
- 4:41that about Brian D 'Abel. Pat Shermer or Joe
- 4:44Judge. Now, I understand that John Harbaugh's
- 4:47playoff success really hasn't been the best.
- 4:49And I understand he's choked some games. And,
- 4:51you know, the quarterback has been playing his
- 4:53best. And some people have fumbled the ball.
- 4:55All these myriad different things, right? But
- 4:58the fact of the matter is this. he's going to
- 5:01elevate the team to some degree. Now, am I saying
- 5:04is he on the tier of an Andy Reid or a Sean McVay
- 5:07or a Dan Campbell or a Kyle Shanahan or a Mike
- 5:10McDonald? No, but he's the second closest thing
- 5:13to him. Most likely this team will probably be
- 5:15a nine to maybe 10 win team in a couple of years.
- 5:19Now, when it comes to the drafting part, that
- 5:22goes to the GM, okay? stop trying to get these
- 5:25big name defensive playmakers. It's time for
- 5:29you to start investing into the offense. The
- 5:31only way that you can truly see what you have
- 5:33in your quarterback is if you give them adequate
- 5:35weapons. And I'm not just saying you just give
- 5:38them a bunch of wide receivers like how the Bengals
- 5:40do, but you give them a good offensive line.
- 5:42You give him a good run game. You give him a
- 5:45reliable tight end. You give him maybe two or
- 5:47three other receivers that he can rely on as
- 5:50well. If you do all of those things and you still
- 5:53don't see the potential that you thought you
- 5:55were going to get with him, well, then that means
- 5:57you just have to get another quarterback. But
- 5:59if he exceeds all expectations that you have
- 6:02for him, well, then guess what? You got your
- 6:04guy. Now, with that being said, the question
- 6:06we all need to ask ourselves is stack or shed?
- 6:09And I would venture to say stack. And the reason
- 6:11why I say that is because you have some pieces
- 6:13on this team. All you have to do is just build
- 6:16off of it and be consistent in your drafting.
- 6:20If you have two or three really good drafts,
- 6:23that's going to speed up the process of making
- 6:25this team competitive. But if you continue to
- 6:28make boneheaded moves in free agency and in the
- 6:31draft, well then guess what? It's going to push
- 6:33the process back. Now when we look at their draft
- 6:36picks, they have their first, their second, their
- 6:38fourth, their fifth, and three sixth round picks.
- 6:40Now if I'm Joe Shane, I'm entertaining calls
- 6:42for the fifth pick. And the reason why I say
- 6:45that is because... If you move down just two
- 6:47or three spaces, you're still in a really good
- 6:50spot. And you're getting a lot of picks in return.
- 6:53So if you wanted to, you could manipulate the
- 6:56draft in such a way that it favors you. Because
- 6:59let's be honest here. It's a defensive draft
- 7:01class. Are all those pass rushers and defensive
- 7:05linemen going to be drafted in the first round?
- 7:07No. Are all those wide receivers and offensive
- 7:09linemen going to be drafted in the first round?
- 7:11No. So if I'm the Giants, trade down a little
- 7:14bit, see how the board falls. If you like it,
- 7:18make your pick. If you don't like it, just stay
- 7:20put. Now, the one move that I would do if I was
- 7:23the GM for the Giants is draft a wide receiver.
- 7:25And the reason why I say that is because we don't
- 7:28know when Malik Nabors is coming back. Wondell
- 7:31Robinson is going to be a free agent. Are you
- 7:33going to pay $25, maybe $28 million a year just
- 7:35to keep him? No. So if I'm the Giants, draft
- 7:39at least two wide receivers. You can get one
- 7:41in the first and maybe even in the fourth round.
- 7:45Because let's be honest here. You have Cardinal
- 7:47Tate, Denzel Boston, Makai Lemon, Jordan Tyson,
- 7:51the wide receiver from Georgia and Bama. You
- 7:54have the wide receiver from Louisville. You have
- 7:56Casey Concepcion. You have a plethora of different
- 8:00wide receivers and different archetypes that
- 8:03you can choose from. The defense is fine. You
- 8:06can address that at the later part of the draft.
- 8:09What you need to do within the first three rounds
- 8:11is get you some offensive playmakers. If you
- 8:15don't do that, you're doing a disservice to Jackson
- 8:18Dart. Now, when we look at their cap space, they
- 8:20only have $11 .9 million right now, but they
- 8:22can create cap space if they just move some money
- 8:24around. That's not really a problem. It's never
- 8:27a problem for any team. I mean, look at the Saints.
- 8:30Every single year, they're in the red. And for
- 8:33some apparent reason, they're able to get in
- 8:36cap compliance when they need to. I don't know
- 8:38how they do it. I wish I would talk to their
- 8:41cap guys just so they can show me how to move
- 8:43money around. But hey, this isn't a podcast about
- 8:46financial stuff, okay? But I'm going to end this
