- 0:22SPEAKER_00: I'm a huge fan of the Sitcom Seinfeld, and one of the most famous episodes of that show is the contest.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Now, in this episode, Jerry, Elaine, George, and Kramer compete to see who can demonstrate self-control the longest.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: And the one who wins will be known as the master of their domain.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Now, what are they refraining from?
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Well, if you've seen the episode, you already know.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: And if you haven't, you just you'll have to watch the episode for yourself.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: I'm not going to go into it here.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: But suffice it to say, the episode is very entertaining and really, really funny.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: And it has some relevance to what we're talking about today because the concept of self-mastery is a really important one for writers.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: We spend a lot of our time obsessing over external obstacles like frustrations with technology, worrying about agents or publishers not giving us a shot and not having enough time to write.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: Maybe we are worried about interruptions from people and a million other kinds of things.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: But those things are all beside the point.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: If we don't master ourselves, nothing else really matters, does it?
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: You know, writing success really just comes down to arranging your life to make writing and publishing a priority.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: And at the end of the day, it's nothing more and nothing less.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: For thousands of years, the greatest minds from all religions, cultures, and walks of life have emphasized the need for self-mastery.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: The great artist Leonardo da Vinci said, one can have no smaller or greater mastery than mastery of oneself.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: You can spend all your time worrying about the forces that want to control you from the outside, but you'll get much further in life and in your writing if you focus on mastering what's on the inside.
