Transcript
- 0:13You, you know, you can spend three weeks perfecting a layout,
- 0:16getting every pixel to sit just right, and then you check the actual field data and
- 0:20realize...
- 0:21um, almost nobody is experiencing what you built.
- 0:25Wait, why?
- 0:25What do you mean?
- 0:26The CrUX field data for mobile sites.
- 0:28Only forty four percent of WordPress websites on mobile pass Core Web Vitals.
- 0:33Forty four percent.
- 0:35Meanwhile, platforms like Shopify sit at sixty five percent and Wix is above sixty.
- 0:40That is a massive gap.
- 0:41I mean, why is WordPress trailing that far behind?
- 0:44Because core WordPress is fast, but we pile heavy page builders,
- 0:48unoptimized themes, and dozens of plugins on top of it.
- 0:52And, and the biggest bottleneck isn't even frontend CSS.
- 0:56It's time to first byte.
- 0:58Time to first byte?
- 0:59Like server response time?
- 1:00Exactly.
- 1:02Cheap shared hosting routinely gives you a time to first byte between five hundred
- 1:06milliseconds and fifteen hundred milliseconds.
- 1:09Think about that math.
- 1:11If your server takes over a full second just to respond, achieving a sub two point
- 1:15five second Largest Contentful Paint is literally mathematically impossible before
- 1:20the browser even gets to render a single pixel.
- 1:23Ah, so no amount of minifying your scripts on the frontend can fix a server that is
- 1:27basically asleep at the wheel.
- 1:29Yeah, exactly!
- 1:30And then there's the core auto lazy load trap, which drives me crazy.
- 1:35WordPress core added native lazy loading, which is great in theory,
- 1:39but by default it slaps loading equals lazy on images automatically.
- 1:45So if your hero image above the fold gets lazy loaded, the browser delays fetching
- 1:49it until everything else processes.
- 1:51Wait, so the browser intentionally waits to load the main visual element on the
- 1:55page?
- 1:56Yes!
- 1:57Unless you explicitly override it and add fetchpriority equals high to that hero
- 2:01element, you are accidentally tanking your own performance score.
- 2:06I was auditing a client site last month, gorgeous site, pristine design,
- 2:10but mobile LCP was clocking in at four point two seconds.
- 2:14We looked under the hood and it was a double hit: deep nested page builder wrapper
- 2:19divs blocking the main thread, and a hero image sitting around waiting on lazy load.
- 2:24That page builder issue is real though.
- 2:26How big is the gap between something like Elementor and native block editing?
- 2:30It's huge.
- 2:31The data shows Elementor sites average an unoptimized mobile LCP between three point
- 2:36eight and five point two seconds.
- 2:39Compare that to a clean block based Gutenberg theme like Twenty Twenty Three or
- 2:43GeneratePress, which routinely hits under two point zero seconds right out of the
- 2:47box.
- 2:48So if you're building with heavy visual builders without serious optimization
- 2:52layers, you're starting from behind the starting line.
- 2:54Way behind.
- 2:56But what's changing right now is how we fix it.
- 2:59We are moving away from manual tweaking.
- 3:01Because of AI integration, right?
- 3:03Like the Model Context Protocol stuff happening with performance plugins?
- 3:07Yes!
- 3:08Take WP Rocket's MCP release, for example.
- 3:11It lets you connect AI tools like Claude or Codex directly to your website's real
- 3:16performance data and your plugin settings.
- 3:18Wait, so instead of a developer spending hours tweaking script deferrals and asset
- 3:23rules by hand, an AI agent reads the real time telemetry and tunes the site
- 3:27autonomously?
- 3:29Precisely.
- 3:30The agent sees where the main thread is getting blocked or where caching is failing
- 3:34and reconfigures script execution on the fly.
- 3:38Manual CSS minification retainers are dying out.
- 3:41The heavy lifting is shifting straight to infrastructure: server level page caching,
- 3:46edge network CDNs, and automated next gen image conversion like WebP and AVIF.
- 3:52It's a complete mindset shift.
- 3:54For years, site quality was judged by visual flourish, right?
- 3:57Animations, complex hero sections, heavy builder effects.
- 4:01Now speed and instant responsiveness are the actual aesthetic that defines site
- 4:05authority.
- 4:06If an AI assistant or a real human visitor arrives at your site and has to wait four
- 4:11seconds for the main content to render, all those fancy animations don't matter at
- 4:15all.
- 4:15The site just feels broken.
- 4:17Exactly.
- 4:18Clean architecture, smart infrastructure, and automated telemetry beat manual polish
- 4:23every single time.
- 4:24Alright, good stuff.
- 4:25Talk soon!
