- 0:00Forgot let Maggie in before Molly texted us.
- 0:04It's raining as well. Oops.
- 0:08This week, we're talking all about animal cruelty.
- 0:34Hello and welcome to another episode of Anime Club.
- 0:40We weren't talking about anything depressing just before
- 0:42this. My name's Chris and this is
- 0:47Peeps. Hey, how you doing?
- 0:52I'm good. Do you know what happened just
- 0:54then? My brain stopped working and I
- 0:57what? I just opened my mouth and
- 0:59something came out and I had 0 control or decision making
- 1:02around it. That was just the noise.
- 1:05It's weird because that is my my hosting style.
- 1:09To be fair, I just opened my mouth.
- 1:11Melbourne, it's good job in good company then.
- 1:14Yeah, it's fine. So it's my pick last week.
- 1:18Why not? Yeah, it was.
- 1:21And I, I told you about this a day ago, luckily we're only
- 1:25watching 3 episodes and there's only currently, as of today, 7
- 1:29episodes out and. Literally it was, it wasn't even
- 1:33like you gave me a full day. You messaged me like last night
- 1:35being like, oh, I forgot to tell you.
- 1:37This is what we're doing. Do you know when I decided that?
- 1:42When at that time I see it 5 minutes before you messaged me.
- 1:47It's generous. It was as I was typing it, was
- 1:53it? Oh, yeah, I remember that out of
- 1:54it. But basically when I started the
- 1:59anime club Facebook page and I'd joined loads of anime groups and
- 2:05stuff like that just to see what was about.
- 2:07And this was getting talked about a lot.
- 2:10And there was a couple of, so a couple of trails of it, the the
- 2:14fight scene that's in it that we've saw in episode 3, that was
- 2:17on it. And I was, oh, this, this could
- 2:18be interesting. So besides that, I knew nothing
- 2:22about it. I just wanted to see a monkey
- 2:24fighting. And you've got that a.
- 2:28Little bit. This this anime delivered some
- 2:31of that. Yeah, I had heard of it before.
- 2:34I think at the time you might have sensed sent it to me going,
- 2:37oh, I want to add this to the list is it is on our list of
- 2:41ones that we'll eventually get to.
- 2:44But I knew nothing about it, hadn't really kind of delved
- 2:48into any online discussions about it.
- 2:51So this was, I came at it completely fresh.
- 2:53It was interesting. Good.
- 2:55I do kind of like going into things a bit blind, so I never
- 2:59watched film trailers or anything besides the obviously
- 3:03the cover art or the thumbnail I send you.
- 3:07But yeah, do you want to go into a bit about what it's about?
- 3:12Yeah, of course. So in a world much like our own,
- 3:15because it's our world, there is a there is a scientist who is
- 3:25experimenting with genetics. As you do.
- 3:30And the the first episode, his lab gets raided by some vegan
- 3:36activists, the Animal Liberation Army, who have been like a kind
- 3:40of actually, they're more like a terrorist group than an activist
- 3:43group because they are extremely violent, extremely zealous as
- 3:49well. So they raid this kind of animal
- 3:51testing laboratory and they find a chimpanzee who is bleeding on
- 3:57the floor in and in some distress.
- 3:59And immediately my heart was like, oh, Chris, why have you
- 4:02made me watch this? I think I even messaged you
- 4:04being like, oh, great animal cruelty.
- 4:06Thanks mate. Yeah, Yeah.
- 4:09I think your words were this is, this is brutal, Yeah.
- 4:12It does. It feels brutal and the so they
- 4:18don't, they can't, they want to free all the animals, but they
- 4:21can't leave this chimpanzee bleeding out because they
- 4:23realise that this, this chimpanzee's pregnant and having
- 4:26a miscarriage. So they take it to an Animal
- 4:28Hospital. And at the Animal Hospital, the
- 4:31chimpanzee gives birth to something not quite ape and not
- 4:36quite human. And it what transpires is that
- 4:38this there is a, a child, Charlie, who is a, a human Z
- 4:43half chimp, half human monkey boy.
- 4:48Yes, many years later, he has been adopted by two scientists
- 4:53who are kind of raising him in like near like in a house,
- 4:57beautiful house in the middle of nowhere.
- 5:00And he it's his first day at school.
- 5:03And from there it's basically just following like Charlie's
- 5:07struggle to fit in as a human Z. And it also delves into things
- 5:12like human nature and like the, but also particularly I think
- 5:17the conversation it has about human nature is the conversation
- 5:20around violence versus compassion in humans.
- 5:27Yeah. And what does it mean?
- 5:28What, what, what other, what's what is the morality around
- 5:32killing and violence? And that is quite heavily pro
- 5:38vegetarianism. Veganism.
- 5:41I would. Say veganism, Yeah, it's, but it
- 5:46is I do think it is interesting and they do have some, you know,
- 5:48and they obviously you have this at the Animal Liberation Army,
- 5:51the ALLLAL. AA lot.
- 5:58That's another and that is another allegory we could make
- 6:00about this because what has happened, because this terrorist
- 6:04organization have become very, very violent and they have
- 6:07killed like children and targeted like things like places
- 6:12like restaurants where there are lots of the.
- 6:14Videos. Some steak houses, yeah.
- 6:16It's it's turned like anyone who is a vegan is now like subject
- 6:22to being like brutal, not bullied, brutally bullied.
- 6:28No, it's ostracized, ostracized, considered like a like
- 6:35outlandish. So it's like all people are
- 6:38being painted with the brush of the the worst view, which is,
- 6:43you know, something that I think we can all say we do see a lot
- 6:47in our world, unfortunately. And it looks like kind of, you
- 6:50know, is it OK? Like, is it because nature, you
- 6:54know, nature, it has lots of scenes where you've got one
- 6:56animal consuming another animal in nature.
- 6:59And I think there is a kind of dialogue going on about like
- 7:02what is natural versus what is morally right.
- 7:07It's interesting because I actually do think even though
- 7:09it's very pro vegan, it doesn't actually come down because
- 7:14Charlie, who is the main character is, is actually quite
- 7:19casually violent. Like he's not, he doesn't like
- 7:25seek it out as a first resort, but he's very capable of
- 7:28violence. And he also says, you know,
- 7:30like, oh, if you like if I had to save other people by killing
- 7:33you, I would. And he says with like a kind of
- 7:36like easy acceptance of like, well, of course, that's, that's
- 7:39just what you do. Yeah.
- 7:42But yeah. So if Charlie, yeah, that's,
- 7:44that's what it's about Charlie and his Charlie and his attempt
- 7:47at friendship. Yeah, because that's the thing.
- 7:50Because Charlie was raised by these parents, these adopted
- 7:54parents, his mother is a lawyer and his father is a it's either
- 8:02a surgeon or a veterinary surgeon.
- 8:04I'm not sure of any way he actually delivered Charlie from
- 8:07his from his struggling, struggling mother.
- 8:10So I'm I'm guessing. Yeah.
- 8:13I'm guessing it's a vet. I think he's AI think he's a
- 8:16veterinary surgeon. You're right.
- 8:19And for a while he Charlie's kept at this kind of institute,
- 8:24isn't he? But then there's an incident and
- 8:27the doctor, just like the vet, decides to take him home and try
- 8:30and raise him like a normal child.
- 8:32Well. I I think because I've I've only
- 8:35seen the first 3 episodes and this is where I think it's gone.
- 8:38The incident that was that was mentioned was Charlie was
- 8:43approached by 7 armed guards because at the time he was like
- 8:48an anomaly. They don't know if he was kitten
- 8:52connected to the animal Liberation Army or whatever it's
- 8:57called. So they kept him under lock and
- 8:59key constant watch. So for some reason, they took my
- 9:02swimming pool and he disarmed the seven officers and like,
- 9:08messed them up bad to the point of hospitalization.
- 9:11Just fair enough. But in that dialogue as well,
- 9:15because there's a policeman telling them of that incident
- 9:17that was covered up. Before that he was saying, Oh
- 9:20yeah, I used to have Charlie, like video games and merch and
- 9:26stuff like that. So I don't know if it was kind
- 9:28of like that was the straw that, yeah, straw that brought the
- 9:33camel back where it was like something had happened where I'm
- 9:37guessing he was provoked or forced to act and this happened.
- 9:40And they were like, yeah, maybe he's not a good spokesperson.
- 9:44Maybe you should take him out of the limelight and just keep him
- 9:47in the house for a bit. Yeah, and maybe just treat him
- 9:51like a part of human. Yeah, because he does.
- 9:56He does have speech and he does have normal human needs and not
- 10:02chimpanzee needs. And as I found it weird, I know
- 10:07it is a like preposterous storyline, but if you came into
- 10:13if you had a chimpanzee in your care or a human Z, would you
- 10:18send it to a public school? So this is a thing that I think
- 10:24I messaged you and I was like, why is this this kid going to
- 10:27school like this is a great argument.
- 10:29This is where this child probably needs a kind of
- 10:31different type of education. Equally, he's also it feels like
- 10:38someone who's desperately in need of some friends because
- 10:43he's very. I'd say I didn't get that
- 10:46because if you notice throughout the whole thing, he's very
- 10:50emotionless. He's very logical and he's
- 10:52thinking and it's very, this happens here.
- 10:55Even when he took away the in one of the scenes, there was a
- 11:00butterfly being caught by a spider and he takes that
- 11:03butterfly away and rescues this kinda and he says, oh, spider's
- 11:08hungry now that that's probably be going to go like the sick of
- 11:12life kind of thing. He's very logical and detached
- 11:16emotionally, even if he does an emotional action.
- 11:20So here's something that I, so I have a different take on it.
- 11:24He appears logical, but I think there is a, there are emotional
- 11:27needs underneath that. And I think so because what
- 11:31happens is the, when the incident with the guards, 7
- 11:33guards happens, the he's five years old.
- 11:36And I think what happens is he's, doesn't, he didn't at that
- 11:41time know how strong he was. And so this is this is a person
- 11:45who's had to learn very, very careful control because you see
- 11:49multiple examples of him being like crazy strong.
- 11:53And it's really cool. Like there's a bit where he like
- 11:55squeezes a branch and it like collapse under collapses a bit
- 11:58under his hand. That's like the first kind of
- 12:00hint of this like inhuman strength that he has.
- 12:05And so I think he's actually, he does have that because you also
- 12:09see him like, so at one point the the Animal Liberation Army
- 12:13come to his home and tried to attack his parents in like
- 12:16episode 3. Yes, 3.
- 12:20Yeah, and he, his response is so quick and so brutal.
- 12:26Like I think there is emotion there.
- 12:28It's just that he's like in a place of having to suppress
- 12:30them. I also think there's something
- 12:32to do with his his biological mother or.
- 12:35And can we talk about how weird it is that like a human doctor
- 12:39impregnated because he impregnates the monkey with his
- 12:44own DNA? Yeah, I don't know if it was in
- 12:47a lab or it was a Turkey baster or Cadillac dinner.
- 12:53Do you know, I kind of hope it's the candle at dinner because you
- 12:55find out that the chimpanzee can communicate.
- 12:57So there's a level of like and and also do like quantum solve
- 13:02quantum puzzles and things. That that part made us laugh
- 13:07because. Because he was.
- 13:07Just, Oh yes, intelligent monkey.
- 13:10Oh yeah, she actually read some words worth poems and made some
- 13:15of her own. I was like, all right.
- 13:17Yeah, yeah, yeah. I kind of love that, though.
- 13:20So like, here's this crazy monkey, but then it's had
- 13:23because the monkeys had some trauma.
- 13:25It's like her brain has, like, been damaged and she's shut
- 13:30down. But I think there is a moment
- 13:32where she's trying to communicate.
- 13:33I really do. And I think, yeah, I think she's
- 13:36still in there. And I also wonder if, like, if
- 13:40you're watching that happen as a child to the being that is your
- 13:50mother and like if that's the being that, you know, your
- 13:52mother to be like. I think that does.
- 13:56I think that quiets the soul in a way that's actually very sad.
- 14:00Yeah. So that's why we I think there's
- 14:03a there's a sadness to Charlie that makes people like Phil.
- 14:07But I did also message you being like monkey boy falls in love
- 14:12with cute smart ginger Chris. Why do you relate to this?
- 14:21Because that is the story. Of your life, pretty much.
- 14:24Pretty much, I mean. Maybe less Thai boxing?
- 14:310 Thai boxes at my end. Yeah, yeah, it's, it's, it's
- 14:39different. Even even speaking about the
- 14:41mom, there was there was there was a moment where the doctor
- 14:46said, oh, yeah, because it was such a difficult birth.
- 14:50It gave her brain damage, which I didn't get.
- 14:54But he could tell there was something inside because you're
- 14:57trying to layout cards that spelled something.
- 15:00And it was I am something. And it was like a couple of it
- 15:05was a letters and numbers. And I'm sure later on this seems
- 15:09like it's going to be a callback thing where it was like, Oh yes,
- 15:11this is experiment G97 or something.
- 15:15And that's what she was putting down, communicating.
- 15:18So it was WI because I remembered this because I
- 15:20thought that for sure that's the thing.
- 15:23Sure, that's a clue. It said I am WO 03 and because I
- 15:30was like is she trying to say I am wrong or I am I am one like
- 15:33what's the a? Woman.
- 15:36Like like, who knows? I think there's an attempt there
- 15:42though. And, and I think because of
- 15:44that, like this is, this is an anime that doesn't give loads
- 15:47away at the beginning. Like I think it's setting up
- 15:51some really, really meaty mystery clues for you.
- 15:56And I think like I think as it progresses, it'll kind of be
- 16:01quite good to see like all of those play out.
- 16:04I think it will. I think it will deliver in the
- 16:06story department if you can make it through the slightly preachy
- 16:09bits. Yeah, so, so I'm sorry, I mean
- 16:14notes the ELA is the Animal Liberation Alliance.
- 16:18So they are a group of you find only there's this ex soldiers in
- 16:25there that have fought in some guerrilla warfare.
- 16:30They and they are ultra, ultra vegans, like to the point where
- 16:35they obviously bomb like steak houses and stuff like that.
- 16:40But it goes from that extreme to the two parents where they are
- 16:47vegan themselves. And there's there's Lucy Eldred,
- 16:51who is the girl that Charlie like has a friendship with and
- 16:56kind of relates, but she's a weird kid.
- 16:58But she comes round and she starts asking questions because
- 17:01obviously veganism in that world is a Tippoo thing because these
- 17:06people that are going around forcing their ideals are bombing
- 17:11buildings. So she's like, is veganism the
- 17:14way to go? And they kind of like take a
- 17:16back is in like a normal person is in a non extreme version of
- 17:20it. They're like, well, we do this.
- 17:22We're not perfect. That is how we choose to live.
- 17:27And obviously we can't be perfect because we use animal
- 17:30products in everything that we do, like rubber and fuel,
- 17:35etcetera. And obviously it's an it could
- 17:38be seen as an allegory for something else in the world, for
- 17:42a lot of things in the world, which you can just you can
- 17:46insert what you want there. But how would you think the the
- 17:49handle that? Because I thought it was a bit
- 17:53preachy. So I think it is preachy.
- 17:56I think the parents are like the least preachy bit.
- 17:59Well actually and the parents. So the parents reminded me of
- 18:02one of my friends who is a vegan and very into like ethically
- 18:07sourced. It is like ideals.
- 18:10But what they say is that, look, you just, you don't have to be
- 18:14perfect. You don't have to do it every
- 18:15day. But like, even if you just dial
- 18:17back on how much meat you have, like, like maybe that's a good
- 18:21place to start. Like just, or just more
- 18:23conscious and aware of like where your food is coming from.
- 18:28And I think that's a good message.
- 18:30I kind of feel like we didn't need to be fed that.
- 18:34I think like. Like there is an element of
- 18:37like, like I don't think, but I don't think veganism and
- 18:42vegetarianism is so taboo in our world that we need to hear the
- 18:47positives of it. But I can see why they want to
- 18:49do that in order to balance it because otherwise the vegans are
- 18:53the backhoes and it just feels very anti vegan.
- 18:57Yeah, yeah, I, I know. Yeah.
- 19:01I I think they were kind of there to show that not, not
- 19:06everyone who follows this way of life are that extreme and people
- 19:11live in your society while not eating beet and not be that way.
- 19:18I think if if we extend it into like a more general area, the
- 19:22parents are there as an example of like, not everyone who makes
- 19:25the same lifestyle choice follows the same moral code or
- 19:29standard, right? So it's like that thing of not
- 19:32everyone who is Catholic is going to go to church every
- 19:35Sunday or like not everyone who is.
- 19:40I'm trying to think of other lifestyle choices other than
- 19:42veganism, but so far all I can think about is veganism.
- 19:45Do you know what I mean? Like, yes, you know, there is
- 19:48like not everyone who is vegan is going to like check the label
- 19:52and every bottle of wine they drink.
- 19:53Like, there is always Shades of Grey.
- 19:56And also not everyone who follows a life, a certain type
- 19:59of lifestyle is going to judge other people for not following
- 20:02it. And that, for me, feels like the
- 20:04moral boundary that they draw between good guys and bad guys.
- 20:08It's like, what is not OK is for you to choose a lifestyle and
- 20:12then in, like, force it on other people, but it's OK for you to
- 20:15choose a lifestyle and just share it with other people.
- 20:19And those two things are very, very different.
- 20:21Yeah. So I think that's the kind of.
- 20:24The role, like the role in the discourse that his parents are
- 20:27playing. And then do you know, there's a
- 20:32scene in this as well where obviously Charlie eats at the
- 20:36school because he's a student there and he has they realize
- 20:40that he picks a vegetarian meals or the vegan meals and they're
- 20:43like, oh, you're vegan. And then I've saw this, this two
- 20:48like bullies, the kind of jocks of the school and they come over
- 20:52and they say, oh, he's he's one of them vegans.
- 20:55And he's like one of these extremists or whatever in the
- 21:00start, like questioning, he's questioning his lifestyle.
- 21:04And why does that he's oh, well, I could eat meat if I want to,
- 21:07but I just, I just don't want to Like I physically can.
- 21:11And obviously because they don't know if he's got a different
- 21:14biology and it might be or it might make him sick, but he's
- 21:17like, Oh yeah, I could if I wanted to.
- 21:19And that's where the there's a weird question about a mouse
- 21:23carrying a plague. Would you?
- 21:25Would you? Kill.
- 21:26Would you kill a mouse? If there was a mouse that was
- 21:28carrying a plague that could wipe out humanity, would you
- 21:30kill the mouse? Yeah, but it was such an edgy,
- 21:33weird question. And it's a psych and.
- 21:37Actually, it's a gotcha question, isn't it?
- 21:40That's why. Kind of, but it's a crap one and
- 21:44but there is like there's a vegan in our in our discord and
- 21:49I remember asking stupid questions that as well.
- 21:52It's almost as if like I was trying to catch a road.
- 21:55I was just trying to be funny. To be fair, I think one of me
- 21:58questions was what about? Well, I think was honey?
- 22:03I asked and then I went breast milk and then I went to using
- 22:09oil products. Obviously if the fossil fuels
- 22:12and she was just like, look Chris, come on, like I'm.
- 22:18What are you hoping to get out of this?
- 22:20I know, I know, I don't know what I was hoping to get.
- 22:22Maybe he's like a ha ha, you have me now.
- 22:25I shall have a steak for some reason.
- 22:27So I have a lot of vegetarians and vegans in my family and for
- 22:31the first like I think I didn't have meat until I was about like
- 22:36either 8 or 10. Right.
- 22:38Then I tried bacon. Never turned back.
- 22:40Also I think school dinners didn't do vegetarianism effort
- 22:44any favours for me in my childhood.
- 22:46Because not in the 70s. How dare you?
- 22:52If I was born in the 70s and I'd look this good after a diet of
- 22:55vegetarianism, that'd be why. But I'm not an IE.
- 22:58Let's meet anyway. And but what I notice is
- 23:02sometimes in the dynamic of my own family and like, there is a
- 23:06kind of like, So I know that it is better for the planet just in
- 23:12general in most situations, if we all ate less meat, don't even
- 23:17have to eat no meat, just less meat, it would be much better.
- 23:20We'd be able to feed more people and there would be less.
- 23:27Yeah. There'd just be less vadnais.
- 23:30Yeah. Yeah.
- 23:30Lots of different reasons. And because of that, sometimes I
- 23:37feel like like a just a little gremlin mode of me wants to like
- 23:41hook a vegan in and drag them down to my moral level of like,
- 23:45like, yeah, but how, how far would you go?
- 23:48How far? Like, you know, sure you have,
- 23:50you have a level of strength and discipline that I don't have
- 23:53because I, I can't resist bacon and cheese.
- 23:56But like, how far does that really go?
- 23:59You like surely you're just human like me.
- 24:00There is a, there is like a kind of gremlininess.
- 24:03So I do kind of recognise the urge.
- 24:05I have overtime realised that that's more about me than it is
- 24:08about other people and their decisions though.
- 24:10So. Oh yeah.
- 24:13Yeah, definitely. I think it's how honey is a.
- 24:16Honey is a good example of like like a a moral grey area for
- 24:22vegans. Do people get down on different
- 24:24different sides of the fence? Eggs is another one as well.
- 24:28Yeah, yeah, I mean, yeah, you're still steep.
- 24:32Isn't utterly anyway besides called into veganism because
- 24:35it's. Different.
- 24:36She couldn't hear it. Yeah, it's not fertilized.
- 24:38You're not killing anything. Delicious.
- 24:40Stimuli anyway, there's it's actually not that like it's not
- 24:44as impactful to farm chickens as it is to say like farm cows in
- 24:48terms of like environmental impact.
- 24:50There are lots of arguments for and against stuff like that.
- 24:54So, yeah, like I think it there is a kind of, but I think it
- 24:58also, it kind of represents that thing of like you can have the
- 25:01same lifestyle. Like you can have the same
- 25:03lifestyle choice in that it will show up in the same way as in
- 25:06like these people don't eat meat.
- 25:09The reasons why they don't eat meat could be vastly different.
- 25:13Yeah, yeah. Because for some people it's a
- 25:15health choice. For some people, it's a moral
- 25:17choice. For some people it's it's I, my
- 25:20family never eat meat. So I just don't eat meat.
- 25:24Well, yeah, I get that. I mean, even do you know what
- 25:27some tablets and stuff there's, there's meat products like
- 25:32paracetamols and and vaccines and stuff like that.
- 25:35This is the and this is the thing about money.
- 25:38So when they changed, you know, they changed the banknotes to
- 25:40that plasticky. They're not vegan that that
- 25:44they've got like a meat product in them that give them that
- 25:47particular texture. So there's something in them
- 25:52that makes them. I can't remember what it is.
- 25:54It might even be something like cochine or, you know, like the
- 25:56ground up beetle dye or something.
- 25:58There's nothing in those particular banknotes because
- 26:00there was like this whole thing about like, but if I, it's like
- 26:05if my religion forbids me from from using animal products
- 26:10because there are some religions.
- 26:11Whereas it's like a, it's like a religious choice.
- 26:14Yeah. Like Jainism, for example.
- 26:19Yeah. Then you couldn't technically
- 26:21use British currency. Oh.
- 26:24I didn't know that. I didn't know about my money
- 26:27anyway, but I'm sure there's the.
- 26:28Same with like the COVID vaccine, because that's
- 26:31horseshoe crabs. They've got something in their
- 26:33blood plasma that is, is a particular chemical that is used
- 26:38to manufacture the the COVID vaccine.
- 26:40And how many lives did that save?
- 26:43This is what I mean. Like it's a really complex
- 26:47thing, but if, if a mouse was carrying a plague, would you
- 26:50kill it? And more importantly, if I was
- 26:52carrying a plague and you could save all of humanity by killing
- 26:55me, would you kill me? I would stomp on you.
- 27:00And then I would be like, hey, why are you stamping on me?
- 27:05Why is there? A tiny boot on my shoulder.
- 27:08Yeah, what are you trying to do? Stop stamping on my shins down
- 27:18there. But then moving on from
- 27:22insulting me. Who's your favorite character?
- 27:25Oh my, that's my favorite bit. I would like Charlie the
- 27:29Humanzu. I believe he was weird.
- 27:32I found him uncomfortable to look at in a kind of uncanny
- 27:35valley way. It's eyes, I think.
- 27:38It's it's the very detailed eyes in an otherwise very blank face.
- 27:43And also he just has an unsettling presence.
- 27:47And but I have known children for a while.
- 27:50I worked at a like volunteered at a drama school before I went
- 27:53to uni. It's like something to like bump
- 27:55my uni application. And there were some kids who
- 27:59just had an unsettling presence. And Charlie reminded me of those
- 28:04children where they're like, hello, Mrs. Panther.
- 28:10I see you have returned. Yes, do drama.
- 28:14Yeah, please. Mine was mine.
- 28:20Was the dad or the the the adopted dad?
- 28:24I think he was kind of the most normal.
- 28:26Adopted that. Yeah, he seems nice, but the
- 28:32adopted dad, not the dad who fucked a chimpanzee.
- 28:35Not that one. Not that one, yeah.
- 28:38Just to be really clear. Yeah, the the the animal, the
- 28:45veterinary surgeon one, not the the other one who operates with
- 28:49animals and yeah. The guy looks like the 70s actor
- 28:53because he's got a beard and a bowl cut.
- 28:56Yeah, yeah, I really liked him just because he was like the
- 29:00normal person. He was like when he's talking
- 29:03about Charlie, because the mom was like AI don't know assault
- 29:08really like happy for her when she was like going through the
- 29:12emotions of when Charlie gets a friend and she's like he's grew
- 29:15up his whole life and he's just had us to talk to and he's
- 29:18bringing around like a like a friend now.
- 29:21And I'm really happy that he's becoming a person and a little
- 29:25bit empathy because obviously he's stone faced, especially
- 29:28when he talks about he's he's the the woman who birthed her
- 29:32birthed him, the chimpanzee. And that's why I was at Eaton
- 29:37told any much emotion. But yeah, invites us straight
- 29:42around for for dinner. And I'm like, oh, that's nice.
- 29:45Yeah, yeah, He was a nice. He's a nice guy.
- 29:49He's good Dad. Yeah, yes.
- 29:54Right. So I don't know.
- 29:56I don't know if I I might leave this in, but should I ask about
- 30:00them the the elephant in the room?
- 30:05About I'm trying to lose weight, Chris, I don't think you can
- 30:08refer to me as an elephant. That's not like.
- 30:11I'm taking that out because it makes us look bad.
- 30:17We talk about. Do you think this says anything
- 30:25about animal testing? Obviously, yeah, I but I think
- 30:33it is that complex issue around anal testing that's the thing.
- 30:38I did ask you for that. We started if we're for or
- 30:42against, I'll see that I am alive because of many medicines
- 30:48that are and that have been tested on animals.
- 30:53So I think we both came to the conclusion, medically, yes, but
- 30:59lipstick, yeah, shampoo in the eyes, all that sort of stuff.
- 31:04No, no. And I have seen some very
- 31:08disturbing films when I was a student that stopped me eating
- 31:12meat for like a good two years, like films like Hakan Phoenix.
- 31:19Now it's a film called Earthlings, which is the most
- 31:22traumatic film I have ever seen. And it's just it goes through
- 31:27stuff like animal testing, etcetera.
- 31:29But it also just does like it's just pure like the moments where
- 31:32humans are just cruel for sport with animals.
- 31:35And it's it's horrible. I do not actually recommend it
- 31:38to anyone. But if you're someone who's
- 31:41feels like you like are called to watch films that ask you to
- 31:46be better as a human being, they fill your boots.
- 31:49But like, I warned you not to watch it.
- 31:53It's bad. So and like, like, and there are
- 31:57moments like that where I'm like, oh, because I also have
- 32:01this thing about like, you know, is that question of if you like,
- 32:07if you eat meat, would you be willing to kill the animal
- 32:10yourself in order to survive? I think I would.
- 32:14I think I'd be comfortable with certain animals more than
- 32:17others. I think fish are easier.
- 32:22Fish are easy. I could gut a fish without
- 32:24really much thought other than the fact that this is kind of
- 32:26gross because it's slimy. But that's like the biggest feel
- 32:30I feeling I have towards it. Whereas I think if I had to skin
- 32:35an animal, I would struggle, but like, I'd get it done.
- 32:40So like when it comes to animal cruelty, I'm like, I'd rather
- 32:42not, I'd rather not think about it.
- 32:44I'd rather not have to think about the moral dilemma of it,
- 32:47but ultimately, when it comes down to it, I would like to
- 32:50avoid it as much as possible. And sometimes it's not
- 32:53avoidable. I I am also being kept alive by
- 32:56certain medication which a 100% has been tested on animals and
- 33:01I'm really grateful for that medication.
- 33:04I'm sorry that the animals had to suffer in order for me to
- 33:07live, but I'd rather live. It's, it's hard.
- 33:13It's a hard question. I know.
- 33:15That's why I asked it. It's why we're doing.
- 33:17It. It's.
- 33:19Another thing which I think I want to make Club a cheerful
- 33:22show all about anime, but here's another thing is how many anime
- 33:26do you have you watched that force you to ask those kind of
- 33:29questions? Because I can only think of like
- 33:31one or two others. Yeah, yeah, very few.
- 33:40I can't think of Mehdi and Mehdi's amalgamist when the
- 33:45experiment. Obviously, there's the famous
- 33:48Doug Gill. Shao Tucker.
- 33:49Shao Tucker I mean, obviously that's horrible, but that's the
- 33:56first one that came. To my mind, Chimera Attack on
- 34:03Titan is a film, is a series that I think like asks big moral
- 34:08questions specifically around things like eugenics and like
- 34:15race, because it's basically an allegory for second, like ethnic
- 34:22cleansing. Actually, it's what it's it's
- 34:26what it boils down to. It's kind of horrifying.
- 34:29When you seen the first season last?
- 34:33Huge spoilers. The other one was moving quickly
- 34:36over that, sorry. Well, you start to get hints of
- 34:41that in the first season. I don't think I've actually
- 34:43spoiled anything for you. It's fine, I know stuff now.
- 34:48Yeah, it's also been out for a while, Chris, so do you know
- 34:51what I mean? Like, there's only so much I can
- 34:53protect you from. The other one is Grave of the
- 34:56Fireflies, which asks which like it like honestly leaves you
- 35:01feeling like like, I think it asks a lot of you in terms of
- 35:05like emotion emotion, like what do we do to each other in war?
- 35:10And like how do we how do we look after the most vulnerable
- 35:13in our society? Tokyo Godfathers is another one,
- 35:16although it does it with a lot more humour at play and I think
- 35:21that makes it much more comfortable.
- 35:22Watch. I think this could have done
- 35:24with a few more jokes you think just to like.
- 35:28I think I think a few jokes might have balanced out some of
- 35:32the heaviness and made it just a bit more binge able because
- 35:35actually what I was thinking is I want to spread this out.
- 35:38I don't want to watch it all in one go.
- 35:41I mean as a as a recording. Heavy.
- 35:44There is 7 episodes of We'll watch 3 at least.
- 35:48Have you watched any more or? I started watching the 4th
- 35:51episode and I was like I think I've hit my threshold for
- 35:54watching it all in one day but I probably will go back to it and
- 35:58finish it as a series. There, there, I I think I'm in
- 36:02the same boat. Where, yeah, I want to watch it,
- 36:05I kind of want to see what happens, but I'm not in a rush.
- 36:10Like I'll do it in between if I've got nothing to do but Oh
- 36:12yeah, watch that There's 20 episodes now.
- 36:15I'll watch that now I'll watch some more, but I'm I'm not in a
- 36:19rush to do it. And where do you think it's
- 36:23going to go from here? Because it has quite a lot of
- 36:26issues. That's really, it's like
- 36:29obviously the the animal test and there's the veganism and
- 36:33extremism. Where do you think it's going to
- 36:37go in the story in the in the future?
- 36:40Good question, sorry I was just playing with Eddie like he's a
- 36:43toy rather than a living. You come.
- 36:45You come for animals. My comfort animal yeah I was
- 36:49feeling a bit sad about animals so he needed to get kisses.
- 36:54What do where do I think it's going?
- 36:56I so I really hope they answer some questions around like what?
- 37:01First of all, why no one explains why this like professor
- 37:07scientist guy wanted to make a child with a chimpanzee.
- 37:11No one explains that other than that was just his work.
- 37:13I want to find out more about Charlie's origins, the origin of
- 37:17the species, but a Darwin incident, get it?
- 37:21I also want you. I will say what that was such a
- 37:25reluctant laugh. It was.
- 37:30That was such an obligation laugh.
- 37:32You're like, oh, here we go again.
- 37:36I also want to find out about the Ala because I feel like
- 37:39there's something SUS going on there and I kind of want to see
- 37:45Charlie like form some emotional bonds with people.
- 37:49I want to see him live a good life.
- 37:52Also, the third episode leaves you.
- 37:55Oh, no. Well, actually the beginning of
- 37:56the fourth episode, it is incredibly tense and.
- 38:02OK. And it leaves you on a bit of
- 38:05like, so there is part of me that's like, what the fuck is
- 38:07going on with the Ala? What the fuck are they up to?
- 38:10Because they seem to be doing the not all is not as it seems
- 38:17and I don't want to give it away.
- 38:19So I've. Let me go pan out then.
- 38:22I've got a theory, right? Yeah, I think Doctor, Doctor Bad
- 38:26Touch or whatever he's called, and Doctor Chimp Lover, I think
- 38:32he was trying to make some sort of do some eugenics.
- 38:36He was trying to combine the best of human trait and the best
- 38:40of our closest living relatives, the chimpanzee, to make some
- 38:44sort of super race on ice. I think it's going to go down
- 38:49that road, some kind of maybe mustache old man thing.
- 38:58That's why I think the Ala are all ex some kind of forces and I
- 39:07think that's why he burnt all of his research before he went into
- 39:12Hayden or whatever happened to him.
- 39:16Because that's the other thing, we don't even know what he looks
- 39:18like. So he could literally be in the
- 39:20story already. We just don't know.
- 39:24Maybe he is Charlie. He's inserted his own clone into
- 39:32the chimpanzee. Have you seen the film Spliced?
- 39:36Yes. Sorry, that's a tangent waiting
- 39:37to happen. All of our film we had though.
- 39:41It is. Had sex with that as well.
- 39:44That's another film with this. Yeah.
- 39:46Like what? What?
- 39:48Someone needs to help these scientists, like, get a date.
- 39:52Just a normal date. Yeah, yeah.
- 39:58I think there's all sorts of mysteries and stuff going on,
- 40:00and I do feel like they've paced it in a way that makes you feel
- 40:03like they're going to give it to you bit by bit, and it will be
- 40:06quite satisfying in the end. So because of that I definitely
- 40:09will finish it, but I just won't do it in one big.
- 40:12Chunk And then what do you think about it being on Amazon Prime?
- 40:18Yeah, great. I've got an Amazon Prime account
- 40:20that's convenient. I know, I'm just I did not
- 40:23expect it to be there. Yeah, do you know Amazon are
- 40:28sneaking up with some additional anime?
- 40:30Lately I've been getting anime into my Prime algorithm.
- 40:33Usually it's just Housewives and Bravo TV like reality TV.
- 40:38Oops, sorry Inter. Yeah, I'm the king I'm getting
- 40:43from the normal streaming services.
- 40:45I'm getting a lot of anime sneaking in, obviously because I
- 40:49watched it like Netflix is chock full of it.
- 40:52I was on Prime. So Netflix has been chocked.
- 40:55Netflix has been chocked still a bit for a while.
- 40:57Disney I would expect it because they are employing more
- 41:01animators I think than any other.
- 41:04But it's never been as well. I've never noticed it being as
- 41:09prevalent. Do we?
- 41:11I'll be mainstream now? Have we been doing this for so
- 41:14long that eventually it's just become mainstream?
- 41:17I think so. I mean stuff like put.
- 41:20Them into that. One Piece is like mainstream in
- 41:23that. Yeah, for sure.
- 41:25I mean, even maybe it's not narrow at all because that was
- 41:27like a meme, wasn't it? It wasn't really.
- 41:32But yeah, I know lots of people. That isn't is a moment.
- 41:37It, it was in like the 2000s. Now it's like a classic.
- 41:45It's it's like, it's like when you turn the turn the old
- 41:49wireless on and you TuneIn to classic radio and yeah, Linkin
- 41:53Park. Oh no.
- 41:57Yeah, yeah, that is now classic rockin it.
- 42:01Evanescence in that necessary. What's this classic?
- 42:04Shut up. I was listening to the
- 42:05Evanescence literally last night.
- 42:07I tuned like I phoned up. I got my boyfriend and he
- 42:13sometimes shares what music he's listening to so that we like,
- 42:16listen to music together. We're cool.
- 42:20Yeah, Grace, But he was playing Evanescence that I got so
- 42:23excited because I was like, I know every single.
- 42:25Word to wake me up or. He was actually not playing that
- 42:30one as well and he was playing like another one of them.
- 42:33Wasn't like my immortal was it? No, no.
- 42:40Was it maybe it was it was the one that's like no, that's no,
- 42:46that's wake me up. It wasn't that one because if it
- 42:49had been that one I would have lost my shit and done that.
- 42:52OK, wake up. Same now.
- 42:57From the side of the building. Yeah, iconic.
- 43:04Oh oh store. I'm coming up to my last
- 43:09question. Would you recommend this to
- 43:12anyone? Yeah, I would.
- 43:15I'd recommend it with a bit of a caveat of like, you know, it
- 43:20depends up what I tell you what though if if they have just a
- 43:23bit more fighting I need I need to see a bit more action.
- 43:27I definitely recommend this to. I definitely recommend this to
- 43:30Lee IF, but I worry it might be a bit preachy in the first few
- 43:33episodes that he wouldn't be able to like stick it out for
- 43:37the action. Yeah, yeah, me too do.
- 43:41You know what I mean? I definitely recommend it to
- 43:45Jake. He's living it.
- 43:49He is Charlie. He's Jake's way more emotional
- 43:54than Charlie. Yeah, true, true.
- 43:58But of Jake Goodwill, friends not have to meet me too.
- 44:06That your impression of Jake. Yeah, Jake as Jake as a human Z,
- 44:12Human Z. But yeah, I would definitely.
- 44:22Recommend it, yeah. So yeah, I would recommend it.
- 44:24There's two people I probably would recommend it to.
- 44:27I probably would also recommend it to Soph.
- 44:28I think Soph might enjoy it, yeah.
- 44:33Monkey. Yeah, so.
- 44:37Technically not monkey though, is it?
- 44:38He's a great ape, so. Well anyway, it's I'm going to
- 44:46say it's can. You show your T-shirt.
- 44:50Oh, nice. Oh, I had a good choice.
- 45:03Talking of do you want to do? You haven't seen Devil May Cry
- 45:09yet though, have you? No.
- 45:13Is that the one with Limp Bizkit?
- 45:15This ain't raw. Yes.
- 45:18OK, I'll give it a call. Are.
- 45:20You up for doing that Yeah let's go down Deep Throat the very
- 45:33long straw they. My crisp may cry they.
- 45:41Yeah, that's a short Chris dying.
- 45:46Chris may die. Devil may crunch.
- 45:49Chris may die. Ah yeah, I'm good for I'm happy
- 45:54with Devil May Cry. Well, until next week and we'll
- 45:59come back next week where we will talk about.
- 46:01Devil May. Cry.
- 46:06That's where I first learned the word melanchory playing that
- 46:09game. Anyway, bye.
