- 0:00You are creative, you can create, it does not have to be perfect,
- 0:03it merely has to be an offering to the collective in service of the divine,
- 0:06in service of love, in service of communion, in service of our togetherness,
- 0:12our great oneness, our interdependence.
- 0:14Hello sunshine and welcome back to paradigm shift with I understood,
- 0:19a place where we reframe what is and reimagine what could be.
- 0:23I hope you enjoy today's episode.
- 0:25Let's paradigm shift together.
- 0:27I am so thrilled to be covering today's topic,
- 0:31because it is a struggle that I face almost daily in my creative life.
- 0:38And that is the struggle of overcoming creative resistance.
- 0:43First I want to tell you the story of how I came to this idea.
- 0:47How did I get to know her?
- 0:48Who is she?
- 0:49Okay, so I started my podcast, which was called reimagining at the time
- 0:55last September, 2022.
- 0:57And this is something that I had been conceiving of doing for months.
- 1:01And when I would picture this vision of creating this podcast,
- 1:05it always seemed like it was going to be nothing but fun and delight and playfulness.
- 1:11And I felt so excited and energized by what I could create.
- 1:15That was the ideation phase.
- 1:17Then came the putting into action or execution phase, which I don't like.
- 1:21You know, I don't like violent language, but whatever.
- 1:24And it was completely different from what I expected,
- 1:26because I didn't anticipate any obstacle,
- 1:29not least, an internal one.
- 1:31I didn't anticipate that I would feel this deep sense of avoidance,
- 1:36of perfectionism, oh, my word.
- 1:39The way I tried to start my first episode so many times,
- 1:43I would click record.
- 1:44It would get to like eight or ten minutes.
- 1:46I would say it's not good enough and I would start again.
- 1:48And I would do that again and again and again and again.
- 1:53And then I would cry and I'd be like,
- 1:54this is never going to be good enough.
- 1:56I'm never going to be able to include all the perspectives I want to include.
- 2:00Someone's going to cancel me.
- 2:01Someone's going to drag me.
- 2:03This isn't good enough.
- 2:04Who am I to have a podcast?
- 2:06And then I would avoid, okay?
- 2:08So I would put it off.
- 2:10So at some point in this journey,
- 2:12my best friend sent me an episode of Oprah's podcast,
- 2:16which I hadn't really listened to ever.
- 2:18And it was with someone called Stephen Pressfield
- 2:21and was on the idea of creative resistance.
- 2:26Now what's so interesting to me about ideas
- 2:29is what is so obvious to one person is completely new to another.
- 2:33And this is why I believe what is obvious to you is not obvious.
- 2:37And whatever you feel is so obvious is what you should be making content on.
- 2:41Okay?
- 2:42Either what you've come to learn or what you've always known.
- 2:45That's very powerful energy to draw from.
- 2:47But I digress.
- 2:49So I learned from this man, Stephen Pressfield,
- 2:52about this energetic force called resistance.
- 2:56And then I read his book, The War of Art.
- 2:58And I will say it's extremely self-helpy.
- 3:01It has a lot of you are the reason.
- 3:03I believe as you know, social structures,
- 3:05manufacture, shame, manufacture, perfectionism.
- 3:09We know that that's one of the tenets of white supremacy.
- 3:12All of these systems where we are made to feel like we are not good enough
- 3:17then make us very insecure artists.
- 3:19And that's why I claim that term.
- 3:21I am an insecure creative.
- 3:22I am creative. I know that.
- 3:23But I'm never going to be a confident creative.
- 3:25That's just never going to be me.
- 3:27That's just never going to be me.
- 3:28But that's actually beautiful because I can create from that energy.
- 3:31And we're going to be speaking about that today.
- 3:34So when I learned about this force and I love the idea of energy,
- 3:37I'm a very energy driven person.
- 3:39It's like I learned that wow,
- 3:41this is something that we all face.
- 3:43And it's not merely procrastination.
- 3:45That's the wrong word for it.
- 3:47There's something that seems to be bigger than us,
- 3:50where we say, okay, I really would love to write this.
- 3:52Or I would really love to create this.
- 3:55The love is there. The passion is there.
- 3:57But then comes what?
- 3:58The fear.
- 3:59The avoidance.
- 4:00The perfectionism.
- 4:01The shame.
- 4:02The self-doubt.
- 4:03Okay?
- 4:04The creative envy of other people.
- 4:05Oh, I could never be like them.
- 4:07Look at their body of work.
- 4:08How could I create this?
- 4:09How did they do this?
- 4:10I'll never get there.
- 4:11It's too late to start.
- 4:12I'm behind.
- 4:13I'm never going to get there.
- 4:15Other people studied this when they were 18.
- 4:17I could never learn to dance.
- 4:18I could never learn to sing.
- 4:20I could never learn to put this artistic project out there,
- 4:23to put this way of doing therapy into the world,
- 4:26to put this business idea, this project.
- 4:28Whatever it is,
- 4:30he gives so many different examples, okay, in the book,
- 4:33which I haven't written a long time, I will say.
- 4:35But I do know that if you're not ready for a tough love,
- 4:39pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop,
- 4:41then don't read it, okay?
- 4:43If you want to dance or vibes, read the Creative Act,
- 4:46or maybe the artist's way, but I haven't read the artist's way yet,
- 4:48it's almost like I'm saving it.
- 4:50I'm also I'm reading Creative Quest by Questlove anyways.
- 4:55So thank you best friend for sending me this podcast episode
- 4:58because it gave me language to understand that this force
- 5:02is something that every single artist faces.
- 5:05He speaks off the example of writers and how so many writers feel
- 5:09that it's more difficult to sit down and write
- 5:12than it is to actually start writing.
- 5:14But the resistance of like, there's the chair, I don't want to go there.
- 5:18There's the chair, I don't want to go there.
- 5:20That's how I feel often with this as well,
- 5:22is the resistance towards the act itself.
- 5:25Okay, so by now you may be asking, okay,
- 5:28I understand in general what this concept is,
- 5:30but let's give a little bit more of a tight definition
- 5:32of what is Creative Resistance.
- 5:35Let's give a definition from this man.
- 5:38I really want to be calling these people this man.
- 5:40Let's get the definition of Creative Resistance
- 5:43from Stephen Pressfield, okay?
- 5:45Resistance, he just calls it Resistance.
- 5:47I'm calling it Creative Resistance.
- 5:50Per an innovator.
- 5:53Okay, Resistance is an energy field
- 5:57radiating from a work in potential.
- 6:00It is a repelling force, it is negative.
- 6:03Its aim is to shove us away, distract us and prevent us
- 6:07from doing our work.
- 6:09Okay, so this got me thinking.
- 6:11I, in high school, remember learning about Newton's third law
- 6:14and also kind of in college, I was a math minor.
- 6:16In fact, first I was a math major,
- 6:19then I switched to philosophy when I took my first philosophy class
- 6:21and then I switched to a math minor.
- 6:23But in any case, I learned about this idea of Newton's laws.
- 6:28Okay, and I really never thought about them again
- 6:30because again, why are we being made to learn useless things?
- 6:33This had me connecting two things
- 6:35that I had never thought of together.
- 6:37And it came to me when I was thinking of creating a TikTok video
- 6:40on this idea.
- 6:42There is a law in physics called Newton's Third Law.
- 6:46You know, Newton had laws and we were made to learn about this
- 6:48instead of actually learning about black history
- 6:50or society or indigenous genocide
- 6:53or maybe like how to relate to other human beings,
- 6:55how to make friends, all the important things
- 6:57we learned Newton's Third Law.
- 6:59But he has this Third Law, which is that every action
- 7:02has an equal and opposite reaction.
- 7:05So, how does this link to creative resistance?
- 7:08Well, actually, very beautifully.
- 7:09Thank you to that man for creating that law
- 7:12because it was all for this.
- 7:13Like, I know that Isaac Newton was like,
- 7:15I have this goal who's going to show up
- 7:19because this ties perfectly into the idea of creative resistance, right?
- 7:24So, you have an idea.
- 7:25What are you inspired?
- 7:27You feel the inspiration.
- 7:28It's propelling you.
- 7:30Inspired, inspired, inspired.
- 7:32You're like, wow, look at what I could create.
- 7:34Look at how inspiring the world is.
- 7:36I have this idea and I want to bring it to life, okay?
- 7:40But, who's not going to let you be great?
- 7:42Well, resistance.
- 7:44It's saying no, no.
- 7:46So, every action has an equal and opposite reaction.
- 7:48Er, per, and er, and per, and er, okay?
- 7:52So, it's not going to let you be great.
- 7:55So, just as the inspiration is pushing you this way,
- 7:58the resistance is pulling you this way.
- 8:01And so, now, what do you do?
- 8:03Well, you stand still.
- 8:04You're stagnant because you're overcome.
- 8:07Your inspiration is overcome by your resistance.
- 8:09So, you have stagnancy or stagnant.
- 8:11I don't even know what the word is.
- 8:13But, let's just call it stagnation.
- 8:15No one knew she was going to say that next.
- 8:17It was not obvious.
- 8:21So, now, you're standing still, babe.
- 8:23You're not making the progress you want to be making.
- 8:26And, as you know, this is not about productivity culture.
- 8:28We're having a very spiritual conversation.
- 8:31There's something in you, a dream,
- 8:34that wants to be spoken in alignment with the universe,
- 8:37with the cosmos, because you are nature.
- 8:39You know that this idea could help people
- 8:41or could help yourself, could help your younger self,
- 8:43could help someone in the world.
- 8:45But, you're scared, you're terrified.
- 8:47And, let's pause on this for a second
- 8:49and talk about the resistance side of the field, okay?
- 8:52So, the resistance side of the field
- 8:54is very much imposed on you by society.
- 8:57You didn't grow up in an environment that was conducive
- 9:00to you feeling free to create.
- 9:03Because we live in a society that's opposite of free.
- 9:06The people whose voices are most urgent to hear
- 9:09experience the most resistance, okay?
- 9:11And, that's why I want you to know
- 9:13if you experience resistance, your voice is needed.
- 9:15Why? Because your voice is going to be made to be the shadow
- 9:18because they don't want you to have a voice.
- 9:19So, that's why you need to create, okay?
- 9:21Love you.
- 9:22So, anyways, so I digress.
- 9:24The point is resistance is this energetic force
- 9:28that's not acting on you pulled out of thin air.
- 9:31It's acting on you from a society
- 9:33that creates and manufactures
- 9:35and sustains the idea of shame,
- 9:37especially if you have any identity that's marginalized.
- 9:40But, I think especially because we live in a culture
- 9:42of these ratings and reviews and feedback
- 9:45and this criticism.
- 9:46And then, there's also comparison and not good enough
- 9:49ism and feeling like you're unworthy.
- 9:52There's so much unworthiness.
- 9:53There's so much conditional worthiness
- 9:55where we don't even tell ourselves,
- 9:56oh, if I create this, that's amazing.
- 9:58We say, if I create this and it goes viral
- 10:00or it does well or it sells well, that's amazing.
- 10:03But, that's out of our control
- 10:04and I have an episode on this
- 10:05or two actually called insecure creatives unite or gather.
- 10:09And, anyway, so I won't talk about feedback right now.
- 10:11But, I just want to say, you are not alone.
- 10:15Like, you alone didn't create this energetic field
- 10:18of resistance that's keeping you stagnant.
- 10:20Obviously, hopefully you know that.
- 10:22But, I want to affirm that because I do think
- 10:23when I read the word of art, it didn't discuss that.
- 10:25It didn't talk about society, obviously.
- 10:28It didn't talk about how we from a very young age
- 10:31are made to be very self-conscious.
- 10:33So, for example, when I'm dancing,
- 10:35I feel the sense of self-consciousness
- 10:37and that is resistance, right?
- 10:39That is not letting me be great.
- 10:40That's not letting me be my fullest self.
- 10:42And it's only when I feel really comfortable
- 10:45that I don't feel that resistance.
- 10:47So, that's why I love this quote,
- 10:49on procrastination by Julia Cameron,
- 10:51the author of the artist's way,
- 10:53where she says procrastination is not laziness.
- 10:55It is fear, call it by its right name,
- 10:58and forgive yourself.
- 10:59I love that, forgive yourself, babe.
- 11:00That's always going to be the case.
- 11:02Like, we're always going to be trying to forgive ourselves.
- 11:04Okay, anyways.
- 11:05So, now we see we have these two opposing forces
- 11:08of resistance and of someone needs to teach me
- 11:12how the screen can like not ever go off.
- 11:16Okay, so we have these two forces of inspiration,
- 11:20pulling us forward, resistance immediately pulling us back
- 11:23and not letting us move forward.
- 11:25Okay, so what are we going to do?
- 11:27What are we going to do about this?
- 11:28How do we create motion in this equation?
- 11:31Well, we have to make sure that our inspiration
- 11:34can exceed our resistance, right?
- 11:38That's the only way we'll move forward
- 11:40is if we get our inspiration to be more than our resistance.
- 11:44We can do this in one of two ways,
- 11:46assuming all things are equal.
- 11:47Either we can increase our inspiration
- 11:51or we can reduce our resistance.
- 11:53Those are the two options,
- 11:55which can either happen by lowering the one
- 11:56or increasing the other or doing both, right?
- 11:59Today, we're going to focus on increasing inspiration
- 12:02because that's where I feel like my conversation
- 12:04with the universe and with you is going.
- 12:06So, we're going to focus on increasing inspiration
- 12:08and I made a tick talk about this and it did really well,
- 12:10but really, I made the video and I was proud of it
- 12:13because I was like, I need to hear this.
- 12:14So, someone needs to hear this
- 12:15and that was my offering to the flea market of life,
- 12:17which we'll talk about soon and it was made
- 12:19and it was received and I love that, okay?
- 12:21So, let's talk about how can we increase our inspiration?
- 12:25You know, it's not obvious.
- 12:27So, I want you to think of two bodies of water.
- 12:30Let's let the water trickle in
- 12:32and let's use this as a representation of inspiration.
- 12:37So, imagine on the one hand, you have a dried up lake.
- 12:41It's struggling, it's dry.
- 12:43It has a little bit of water, but like not enough,
- 12:45you know, to sustain life.
- 12:46The animals are coming in there like,
- 12:48what's up, like there's nothing for us to drink here.
- 12:50The earth is dry, it's drying up.
- 12:53That's you when you're stagnant, okay?
- 12:56It's that you're not feeling the juiciness of your inspiration.
- 13:00You're feeling a little bit dried up.
- 13:02And so, now we would ask, okay,
- 13:03where do we want to draw inspiration from?
- 13:05The dried up lake or the ocean?
- 13:08The endless, vast, never-ending ocean, okay?
- 13:13That's where we want to move.
- 13:14We want to move from a dried up lake,
- 13:16which is the individual, the self,
- 13:18which is always going to be limited and afraid
- 13:21and ashamed to the ocean we need to tap into forces.
- 13:28That was so fun to do, I have to do it again.
- 13:31That are bigger than us.
- 13:33Okay, so we have the lake on one side, the dried up lake.
- 13:36Oh, limited, drying up, nothing much more to give.
- 13:40Waiting for the rain, but how often does the rain
- 13:42in a dried up desert versus the ocean, endless, vast?
- 13:46So grand, so big, divine, never-ending,
- 13:51impossible to become completely dried up.
- 13:54Okay, tap into forces that are bigger than you.
- 13:58Three forces we're going to be talking about
- 13:59tapping into our number one spirituality.
- 14:03Number two, the collective and number three nature.
- 14:06They're all actually in reality very connected,
- 14:09but let's split it up in this way
- 14:10so that we can really understand what it would mean
- 14:13to draw inspiration from forces that are bigger than us.
- 14:16Okay, first let's go to spirituality.
- 14:19Okay, now I am not telling you to become a spiritual person.
- 14:23I'm telling you about what I've learned
- 14:26when it comes to overcoming resistance
- 14:28is that I need to lean on a force on an energy.
- 14:32Remember resistance is an energy.
- 14:34I need to rely on an energy that is bigger
- 14:37than my own resistance and therefore bigger than me.
- 14:40And that for me is spirituality.
- 14:42It's the universe.
- 14:43It's the idea of magic.
- 14:45These are the things that I draw from.
- 14:47The idea that I am in constant conversation
- 14:50with the universe.
- 14:52I am of the universe.
- 14:54And if I allow my ideas to manifest through me,
- 14:57then I am serving something much bigger than me.
- 15:01This is very difficult to explain to you as well
- 15:04unfriendly to the idea of mysticism, okay?
- 15:08The mystical dimension of life.
- 15:10If you do not believe in the mystical dimension of life,
- 15:12this won't resonate with you,
- 15:13but the other two ideas might.
- 15:15And that's okay.
- 15:16I'm really speaking to people who want to have
- 15:18a magical connection to their art
- 15:20and to their creations in this segment, in this section.
- 15:23Because that's who I am and I can't help being any other way
- 15:26and I wouldn't be able to create
- 15:27if I didn't have this mystical property within me.
- 15:31Like I literally want to be in touch with the divine.
- 15:33I want to feel like, oh my word, I created magic today
- 15:37or I let magic pass through me today.
- 15:39That to me feels deeply fulfilling
- 15:41and feels like I am drawing on something
- 15:43that is much bigger than me.
- 15:44You come from a lineage, you live on a universe,
- 15:47you had less than a 400 trillion chance of surviving.
- 15:49There's something incredibly magnificently random
- 15:53about the human experience.
- 15:55And we have always, throughout time,
- 15:57throughout ancient traditions,
- 15:58there's been a insistent on believing in something bigger.
- 16:03With this idea of spirituality,
- 16:04let's talk about Bell Hooks.
- 16:06All about love, there is a chapter on spirit
- 16:08and what she says is, when we begin to experience
- 16:11the sacred in our everyday lives,
- 16:14we bring to mundane tasks a quality of concentration
- 16:19and engagement that lifts the spirit.
- 16:23We recognize divine spirit everywhere.
- 16:27That is so beautiful.
- 16:28The sacred in our everyday lives.
- 16:30I actually have a daily ritual that I started about
- 16:34four weeks ago called the magic of today.
- 16:37It's a journal exercise.
- 16:38I do it every single night
- 16:39and I write down moments that felt like magic that day.
- 16:42When my best friend's voice just makes me feel so warm
- 16:45and full magic, when I create a video
- 16:47that I feel so spiritually aligned to magic,
- 16:50when my other best friend sends me a poem
- 16:52that is so delectable and I'm just like,
- 16:54you are such a genius.
- 16:55How do you do this magic?
- 16:57One day I was at a cafe and this woman was next to me
- 17:00and she was like, I don't want the other half
- 17:01of this pastry, do you want it?
- 17:03And she was like, I haven't bitten it or anything.
- 17:05And I was like, oh, my word, magic.
- 17:06So things like that, sometimes I put things
- 17:08that I wish didn't happen.
- 17:10You know, some days I feel so lost
- 17:11and I have no idea what I'm doing
- 17:13or I feel anxious or I feel like I'm not doing enough
- 17:15or I feel behind.
- 17:17And I'll try to extract some sort of magic
- 17:19from that experience just so I'm having kind of a holistic,
- 17:22you know, life, okay?
- 17:24The idea that joy and sorrow are connected.
- 17:27So here we have this idea of bringing to mundane tasks
- 17:31a quality of concentration and engagement.
- 17:35This is really beautiful because it speaks
- 17:37to the opposite of our distracted era
- 17:39where we don't bring our fullest engagement to everything
- 17:42and as such this creates some disease in our daily lives.
- 17:46Now, first and foremost, the onus is on the tech companies
- 17:49to not create addictive technologies
- 17:52that literally aim to survey and extract our attention
- 17:55in very exploitative ways.
- 17:57And also I think, for example,
- 17:58when you have coffee with someone
- 18:00and you give them your full engagement,
- 18:01like you don't look at your phone, you like are with them.
- 18:05I think that's such a beautiful way
- 18:06of giving to mundane tasks or to daily experiences
- 18:09your full presence.
- 18:11The second quote that I want to bring
- 18:13into this idea of spirituality is Julia Cameron
- 18:17in the artist's way says, do what intrigues you.
- 18:21Explore what interests you.
- 18:23Think mystery, not mastery, oh, my word.
- 18:28Four words that I actually want you to sit with.
- 18:31Think mystery, not mastery, powerful.
- 18:39Okay?
- 18:40What if you made your creative life or work or projects
- 18:46about the mystery?
- 18:47Oh, I wonder if, wouldn't it be interesting if
- 18:50I've always wondered why mystery versus this has to be perfect?
- 18:56I have to get better at this.
- 18:57This many views tomorrow, I want that many views.
- 18:59And next day I want that many views.
- 19:00Get a reward, get an accolade, 5.0 stars.
- 19:03You know what I mean?
- 19:04Mystery versus mastery.
- 19:08A duty may numb us out.
- 19:10She says, turn us off and tune us out.
- 19:14Whereas, which is implied, a mystery will in live in us,
- 19:19remember the erotic, will turn us on,
- 19:22will tune us in to the magic of the mundane,
- 19:27the magic of everyday life, the magic of mystery, you know?
- 19:34I think that's so powerful.
- 19:35Tune into mystery, not mastery, tune into mystery,
- 19:40not mastery, tune into mystery, not mastery,
- 19:44tune into mystery, not mastery.
- 19:47One thing about me, I'm gonna make a song so that it sticks.
- 19:50All day after this, I'm gonna be like tune into mystery,
- 19:54not mastery, okay?
- 19:56Tune into mystery, not mastery, yeah.
- 20:00Let's move on.
- 20:01So I loved this little bit of a quote from Miss Shonda Rhymes,
- 20:05the creator of what Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, Bridgerton.
- 20:09Oh, my word, it goes on, I can't even remember all of them.
- 20:12Queen Charlotte, how to get away with murder?
- 20:15Like it goes on and then it goes on inventing Anna, okay?
- 20:19Where do you think she gets inspiration from?
- 20:22Is it working hard?
- 20:23Is it discipline?
- 20:24Listen to what she says.
- 20:25A lot of the stuff that comes to me,
- 20:28comes when I'm lying in bed.
- 20:30Ha, sexy, beautiful, powerful,
- 20:32or after I've gone to sleep.
- 20:34If the things I'm thinking about at night,
- 20:36stick with me through the day, I know there's something there.
- 20:41So when she says there's something there.
- 20:43Oh, powerful, sexy, spiritual, magical, mystical,
- 20:48mysterious, there's something there.
- 20:51She doesn't say what?
- 20:52She doesn't know what?
- 20:53She's curious about the mystery.
- 20:55That wow, this idea has stuck with me.
- 20:58This idea came to me in my sleep, in my dreams,
- 21:01in my visions, in my rested mind.
- 21:04So rest is a similar connection to the divine.
- 21:07When you take a nap, when you sleep,
- 21:10you get to have these lucid dreams, these visions,
- 21:13the subconscious mind-wondering that can connect you
- 21:16with something that has to be mystical.
- 21:18Like, where does it come from?
- 21:19Okay, right.
- 21:22So I think that's very, very powerful.
- 21:24And if you want to learn more about the connection
- 21:26between the spiritual and the creative,
- 21:28I think the creative act, a way of being,
- 21:30is a beautiful, beautiful book that you can read,
- 21:33that I just loved and I reread it
- 21:35because, oh, I'm rereading it,
- 21:36because it's just like reminders that you always, always need.
- 21:39And let me just say one more thing
- 21:41about this idea of spirituality.
- 21:44The practice that we need in order to access this consciousness
- 21:48is silence, is meditation, is stillness,
- 21:51because, and is awareness,
- 21:53because the artist is the one who notices, okay?
- 21:57Because if you are always letting like things
- 22:00into your consciousness that don't serve it,
- 22:03you don't have as much space to notice.
- 22:05Space is very important.
- 22:06Listen to this quote by Rick Rubin
- 22:08in the creative act, a way of being.
- 22:11Most of the time as creative people,
- 22:13which he believes we all are, which I believe we all are,
- 22:16we are gathering data from the world through the five senses,
- 22:19or whatever we have access to.
- 22:21With the information that's being transmitted
- 22:23on higher frequencies, we are channeling energetic material
- 22:27that can't be physically grasped.
- 22:30Remember Sean Derheim saying,
- 22:31I know there's something there.
- 22:33We are channeling energetic material, something
- 22:38that can't be physically grasped.
- 22:41It defies logic in the same way that an electron
- 22:45can be in two places at once.
- 22:47This elusive energy is of great worth,
- 22:50though so few people are open enough to hold it.
- 22:56So many people will listen to this and say,
- 22:58ugh, that's not true.
- 22:59That's not fact, that's not science.
- 23:01You know what I mean?
- 23:03But you're not open, so you'll never experience
- 23:05what I'm trying to describe to you,
- 23:06unless you are open to it.
- 23:09He says, how do we pick up on a signal
- 23:11that can neither be heard nor defined?
- 23:15The answer is not to look for it,
- 23:17nor do we attempt to predict or analyze our way into it.
- 23:22Instead, we create an open space that allows it.
- 23:26And to me, this open space is the open awareness.
- 23:29It's the silence, it's the journaling, it's the meditation.
- 23:32It's the practices that are going to open up your awareness
- 23:36and your, therefore, your connection,
- 23:37your energetic field between you and the divine.
- 23:40A space so free of the normal, overpacked, overstimulated,
- 23:45condition of our minds, that it functions as a vacuum,
- 23:48drawing down the ideas that the universe is making available.
- 23:52So the idea, he says, doesn't come from you.
- 23:56It comes from the universe, which is also your experiences
- 24:01and your collective understanding of those experiences.
- 24:03But you know, you're just walking
- 24:04and you're like, this happened to me this morning.
- 24:06I was walking in, I was like, oh, my word.
- 24:07And I wrote it down.
- 24:08I wrote the idea down.
- 24:10And that's another thing.
- 24:11You need a practice of recording the things
- 24:13that turn you on in life, your ideas, your inspiration.
- 24:16You need a note on your phone where you can store
- 24:19these random bursts of insight.
- 24:22I have a notion, a notion page where I just keep
- 24:25the ideas that come to me.
- 24:27Maybe I'll never do anything with them.
- 24:28But the fact that that energy was so potent
- 24:31that I noticed it and that I cared enough to write it down
- 24:33to me is very important, especially to my future self,
- 24:36who may be seeking ideas.
- 24:39Let's quickly go back to Bell Hooks
- 24:41and let's read another quote from her unspirituality,
- 24:44because I think what she has to say here is so important.
- 24:47OK, so Bell Hooks says, living life in touch with divine spirit
- 24:52lets us see the light of love in all living beings.
- 24:57That light is a resurrecting life force.
- 25:00Remember, inspiration, resistance.
- 25:02That light of love in all living beings
- 25:05and being able to see it is a resurrecting force,
- 25:08an inspiring force, a propelling force,
- 25:11an in-living force, an erotic force.
- 25:13Go listen to the erotic episode.
- 25:15A culture that is dead to love can only
- 25:18be resurrected by spiritual awakening.
- 25:21This is so interesting.
- 25:23A culture, a loveless culture, which she says often.
- 25:26A culture that is dead to love can only
- 25:28be resurrected by spiritual awakening.
- 25:31And then she goes on to say, because we are spiritually empty,
- 25:35we try fill up on consumerism.
- 25:38It is a response to lovelessness.
- 25:40I think we've had a great time discussing
- 25:42this idea of spirituality and magic.
- 25:45And I've left you three resources
- 25:46that you can lean on to further your connection to this realm.
- 25:51The second idea I want to talk to,
- 25:52remember we're talking about tapping into forces
- 25:55that are bigger than you, like the ocean of life,
- 25:57the ocean of inspiration, the endless abundance
- 26:00of nature and of spirituality and of the collective
- 26:03that can inspire you, an endless force
- 26:05that can act against the repelling force of resistance
- 26:09so that we can grow our inspiration and serve that inspiration.
- 26:13The second force is the collective.
- 26:16And I absolutely love this one because it's one that I have not
- 26:21really heard as much discussed,
- 26:23or maybe I've just been looking in the wrong places.
- 26:25But the idea that this art is here to speak
- 26:28to something in someone else,
- 26:30and that this part of you that is curious about this idea,
- 26:34that is affected by this idea, that is turned on,
- 26:38that is intrigued, that finds the mystery in this idea,
- 26:43is connecting you to someone else,
- 26:46to others who similarly experience that mystery,
- 26:50that inspiration, that curiosity, that calling,
- 26:54and something that is alive in you can awaken something
- 26:57that could be alive in someone else,
- 26:59or that is already alive and seeking further enlightenment.
- 27:03So in making your art about serving the collective,
- 27:06you tap into a force bigger than you.
- 27:09You say, wow, let me step into the flea market of life.
- 27:14And the flea market of life is each of us bringing an offering.
- 27:19And an offering is just that.
- 27:20It does not have to be perfect.
- 27:22It does not have to be picked up.
- 27:23It does not have to be received.
- 27:25The idea, the thought, the love is in the offering itself.
- 27:31It's that I showed up and I offered something to others.
- 27:34And I recognize that I have benefited, I have been enriched,
- 27:37I have been in live end by the offering of the collective,
- 27:42by that poem that saved my life, by that book that kept me going,
- 27:48by that show that delighted me, by that movie that in live end me,
- 27:53by that business that inspired me,
- 27:57whatever it is, I am being served each and every single day
- 28:01by the imagination and the willingness to commit to that imagination
- 28:06of other beings, of the collective.
- 28:08The collective is what is serving my consciousness,
- 28:11each and every day through their offerings on and offline.
- 28:15You know what I mean?
- 28:16And so as someone who's been a beneficiary
- 28:18of the collective's offering in the flea market of life,
- 28:21I am going to add to that offering and I'm going to say,
- 28:24hey, I also have something to give and I want to give it.
- 28:27And it's not about how it's received.
- 28:29It's about the fact that in an act of love,
- 28:32in an act of mutual connection, in an act of service,
- 28:36I'm here to provide this offering.
- 28:39And the mechanism that makes the offering possible
- 28:42is the emotion from which we create.
- 28:45What do I mean by that?
- 28:46The mechanism of connection is emotion.
- 28:49When you feel connected to someone,
- 28:51it's because they made you feel something
- 28:54or they spoke to something you already feeling.
- 28:56They made you feel less alone.
- 28:58They made you feel more alive.
- 29:00They made you feel seen.
- 29:01They made you feel inspired.
- 29:03They made you feel sad.
- 29:04They made you feel angry.
- 29:06They made you feel something.
- 29:07So if you create from an emotion, it could be inspiration.
- 29:12It could be like as in you want to inspire.
- 29:14It could be love, pain, grief.
- 29:17Oh, let grief have a word.
- 29:18Grief has so much to say and it isn't being given
- 29:21enough space to speak.
- 29:22So if you create from an emotion,
- 29:24you are going to find or connect with each and every other person
- 29:28who has experienced that emotion.
- 29:31And your vulnerability is what's going to connect you to that person.
- 29:34It could be through your voice, but also through a song.
- 29:37How many songs speak to something we've all experienced?
- 29:40And they catch on because it's like so moving.
- 29:44Whether it be sad or happy, grief, pain, whatever it is,
- 29:47it's moving us and therefore we're connecting to it and through it.
- 29:52So when you think about the flea market of life,
- 29:54you take away the pressures, the resistance of perfectionism.
- 29:59No one at the flea market wants things to be perfect.
- 30:02They want to see us as a collective, mutually serving each other,
- 30:06giving each other the ingredients that we need
- 30:08to enrich and in life in our lives.
- 30:10You know what I mean?
- 30:11The spices, the flavors, the vegetables, the fruits
- 30:15of our visions, of our dreams, and yes, of our labor.
- 30:19Okay, because it's not always fun and roses.
- 30:22It's often very, very difficult.
- 30:23That's what resistance is.
- 30:25It's not that fun to overcome.
- 30:26It's quite painful.
- 30:27It can be very rewarding when it's been overcome.
- 30:30But often it's suffering.
- 30:31And I don't glorify suffering.
- 30:33I wish there was no suffering on earth,
- 30:34but I cannot seem to find a way to create things that people like
- 30:38without in some way suffering.
- 30:40That's the vibe.
- 30:41You know whether it be the fear before,
- 30:42but then they may be delight during.
- 30:44But often there's fear the whole time.
- 30:46You know what I mean?
- 30:47So we are serving the collective
- 30:49through our mutual offerings to one another.
- 30:52Okay, recognizing that everything,
- 30:55with the think of insecure, we loved insecure.
- 30:58We don't know how is a suffered
- 30:59in that making of that show.
- 31:00We have no idea.
- 31:02You know, we don't know how these artists,
- 31:06how do they have the ability,
- 31:09but not only the ability, the devotion to their audience
- 31:13to bring ideas into life and to see them through.
- 31:15And of course the resources, which is huge
- 31:17and very, very crucial in our world,
- 31:19is that often we have dreams
- 31:21that we don't have the resources to bring into life.
- 31:23Okay, that's very important as well.
- 31:25So serving the collective can help us
- 31:27rethink what we are on earth to do.
- 31:30Because I'm gonna die and no one can die for me.
- 31:32I might as well use my consciousness
- 31:34to serve other people while I'm here.
- 31:36The other day I actually wrote my eulogy
- 31:39because it's an exercise that helps bring me back
- 31:41to my aliveness and bring me back to,
- 31:43am I living in accordance with my values?
- 31:45And I was like, actually I am.
- 31:47And obviously I'm not perfect or anything like that.
- 31:49But when I wrote down what people in my life
- 31:51and people who I've tried to serve would say about me,
- 31:54I was like, I like this girl.
- 31:56I like this person.
- 31:57This is great.
- 31:58You know what I mean?
- 31:59And bringing in death for me helps me just take away
- 32:04the shit that I'm worrying about that doesn't matter
- 32:05and bring back and to focus the things that really do matter.
- 32:08Not only my own death, but the death of people in my life.
- 32:11Like being like, oh wow.
- 32:13Am I gonna do this?
- 32:14Oh yes, because this person is gonna die someday.
- 32:16You know what I mean?
- 32:17Literally that's how I think.
- 32:19So yes, you know what I mean?
- 32:20Especially when it's like your parents or things like that.
- 32:22But obviously no pressure.
- 32:23Every family dynamic is different.
- 32:25And family is a source of pain and trauma
- 32:27for so many people sustaining you love.
- 32:28But what I mean to say is this,
- 32:31when I think of the idea of service,
- 32:33the reason I think of death is I can't serve anyone
- 32:36while I'm dead.
- 32:37The only reason I would be able to is because I've left things
- 32:41that will live beyond me.
- 32:42So my time to serve is my aliveness.
- 32:45Is my time while I'm alive.
- 32:48And there's this delicious circularity,
- 32:50this delicious wholism or integrity,
- 32:53actually the word integrity means whol.
- 32:55When we use our energy to serve people, why?
- 32:57Because the universe, ah, it gives you that energy back.
- 33:00It's a very energizing experience
- 33:03to know that you are helping people.
- 33:05And you shouldn't do that for that reason,
- 33:06but it's very, very holistic and integral, integral.
- 33:10So let's talk about bell hooks again
- 33:12because when we think about the collective,
- 33:15we wanna bring in communion by bell hooks and she says,
- 33:18the communion in love, our soul's seek,
- 33:21is the most heroic and divine quest any human can take.
- 33:26So once we seek communion in love,
- 33:29which is the flea market of life, communion,
- 33:31the idea that we are serving the collective,
- 33:33we are doing this out of love for the collective,
- 33:36for other people, and we are part of the collective.
- 33:39It's not out there.
- 33:40That's why I say the curiosity in you lives in others
- 33:43because you are of the collective.
- 33:45Your consciousness is both unique and not unique at all.
- 33:48Your fears are not unique at all.
- 33:50Your experiences are not unique at all.
- 33:52But you are, as Rick Rubin says, the prism,
- 33:57the specific array or arrangement of experiences,
- 34:00of ideas, of thoughts, of also of talents
- 34:04that can bring that perspective into the world
- 34:06in a way that I believe only you can,
- 34:08but also in a way that will serve many others
- 34:11because we are so alike.
- 34:13We're so alike.
- 34:14How many TikTok comment section?
- 34:16I thought I was the only one.
- 34:17I never knew other people did this.
- 34:19I never knew, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 34:21Oh, my word, I've never had a unique thought in my life.
- 34:23Oh, my gosh, nothing I do is unique to me ever.
- 34:26I do that all the time.
- 34:27I'm always so shocked.
- 34:28I'm like, wow, damn.
- 34:29My fellow beings and I were actually the same species, yes.
- 34:32Well, actually the same, yes, you know what I mean?
- 34:34Wild, crazy, delicious and ridiculous.
- 34:36Okay, so the communion and love our soul's seek
- 34:39is the most heroic and divine quest
- 34:41our any human can take.
- 34:44So that's why it's linked,
- 34:45that's why I said all of these things are linked,
- 34:46the collective spirituality nature
- 34:48because it's a divine quest to serve
- 34:51and to seek communion with others.
- 34:54And our art can be one mechanism we do that through.
- 34:57I wanna read you something else from all about love
- 35:01by Bell Hooks, where she's quoting someone else,
- 35:03it's a longer quote, so said,
- 35:04backlessing up, cue the music babes,
- 35:07to me I'm babes, ah!
- 35:09Okay, look at my socks, aren't they so delightful?
- 35:11Okay, so this is by someone called Thomas Merton,
- 35:15quoted in all about love by Bell Hooks.
- 35:18She says, love is in fact an intensification of life,
- 35:25a completeness, remember integrity,
- 35:27a fullness, a wholeness of life.
- 35:31Life curves upward to a peak of intensity,
- 35:35a high point of value and meaning
- 35:38at which all its latent creative possibility
- 35:41go into action and the person transcends themselves
- 35:45in encounter, response and communion with another.
- 35:51So this is this idea of transcendence,
- 35:53of reaching this place where all the creative possibility
- 35:57that we couldn't before access,
- 35:58the latent creative possibility go into action,
- 36:01so become potent, okay?
- 36:03And the person transcends themselves
- 36:06in encounter, in response and in communion with another.
- 36:10So the creative act is in conversation,
- 36:13it's in the encounter with someone else
- 36:15or it's in the response to someone else
- 36:17or it's in this divine communion with someone else.
- 36:21It is for this that we came into the world,
- 36:23this communion and self transcendence,
- 36:26this is really important.
- 36:28It links to the idea of the dried up well
- 36:30versus the ocean.
- 36:32He's saying that it is for this reason
- 36:34that we are on earth, is to be in communion with others
- 36:37which Bellhooks also says is the most divine quest
- 36:39any spirit can take and also to transcend the self,
- 36:43to go beyond the self, that's what I'm trying to say,
- 36:46tapping into forces bigger than the self
- 36:48means we lose track of our self, that is the flow state,
- 36:52is losing track of the ego, losing track of the self,
- 36:55you know what I mean?
- 36:56Finally, we do not become fully human
- 37:01until we give ourselves to each other in love.
- 37:07So precious, we do not become fully human
- 37:10until we give ourselves to each other in love.
- 37:15And this connects to the quote on how nature is always serving.
- 37:19The sun is shining so that we may experience life
- 37:23and experience enlivenment, the flowers are blossoming
- 37:26so that we may, it's not so that,
- 37:28but I'm saying without which we could not, you know what I mean?
- 37:31Experience beauty, experience smell, experience fruits,
- 37:35so this blossoming, this serving, this abundance,
- 37:37it's our nature and it is nature.
- 37:40And there's nothing that can make us more fully human
- 37:42than giving ourselves to each other in love.
- 37:45This episode, it's an act of love, it's not for me,
- 37:48it's not for I, it's not for my ego
- 37:51because it's gonna get 200 views on YouTube
- 37:52and that's okay, it's gonna get whatever, it's okay.
- 37:56Whoever's listening to this, if it reaches one person,
- 37:58I'm thrilled, I gave to you, I gave of myself,
- 38:02I gave of my experience and my perspective to you in love.
- 38:05This is what I'm bringing to the flea market of life.
- 38:09And I hope that you enjoy it.
- 38:11This connects beautifully to the third and final force
- 38:14that we can tap into that is bigger than us
- 38:17in order to overcome creative resistance
- 38:20and move forward into inspiration is nature.
- 38:23Nature is always going to be much bigger than us.
- 38:26And if we become students of nature,
- 38:28if we allow nature to become our teacher,
- 38:31there's an endless abundance of ideas,
- 38:33of understandings, of stillness that we can tap into,
- 38:38of calm and of integrity, again, of wholeness
- 38:41that we can tap into because nature is inherently creative,
- 38:45nature is always creating, nature shows us,
- 38:48for example, when you look at a tree, it doesn't make sense
- 38:51and it's so vast, it's not linear, it makes no sense.
- 38:54The branch is, and you're like, how is this possible
- 39:00because it doesn't have to always make sense
- 39:03and yet it's fortifying, it's strong.
- 39:05And also in the hidden life of trees,
- 39:08there's such beautiful quotes about nature
- 39:11and about the way that trees exist as a collective.
- 39:14And when one tree is not doing well,
- 39:16the other trees conspire to protect and serve that tree
- 39:18and help it and that trees underneath the ground
- 39:21have a communal network, they're not just a lone tree.
- 39:24So this teaches us we need community as well
- 39:26in order to create, we need a support system.
- 39:29And if we don't have that in our real lives,
- 39:31we need to lean on voices like hopefully I'm helping you with
- 39:34such that we can be enlivened by a virtual support system.
- 39:38So both times spent with nature, both in stillness,
- 39:42but also in observation, as a teacher,
- 39:44don't only look to books and to scholars,
- 39:46but also look to trees, to mountains, to rivers,
- 39:51to lakes, and the wisdom of these bodies, okay?
- 39:55The wisdom of animals, the wisdom of trees,
- 39:59the wisdom of the ocean, the wisdom of stillness
- 40:04and of recognizing that you are a part of nature.
- 40:07The birds chirping in the morning,
- 40:09trip, trip, trip, trip, trip, trip, that's what they do.
- 40:13So how can we find our birdsong and sing it?
- 40:17Without judgment, nature's not ugly, nature is.
- 40:21And nature's only purpose is to be itself.
- 40:24And you are nature, my darling, you are nature.
- 40:27Many things that are unnatural have been done to you
- 40:30and are being done to you.
- 40:32And you are living in an unnatural environment
- 40:34that is poisoning you, daily, both your actual physical being
- 40:39in terms of pollution and such,
- 40:40but also your spiritual being,
- 40:42your spiritual life is being poisoned.
- 40:45One of the things you can do to come to your truest nature
- 40:49and to be in touch with nature is to find moments of stillness
- 40:53and also to find moments of connection,
- 40:56but that deeper connection, you know,
- 40:58where you're connecting with, you're full of self,
- 41:00you're deeper self, you're higher self,
- 41:01whatever you wanna call it, your truest nature.
- 41:04And I think this idea of meditation and stillness
- 41:07it comes in because there's a lot of unnatural forces
- 41:10acting on you.
- 41:12So it's important to reconnect with that which makes us feel
- 41:17like we are being our truest nature,
- 41:19which for me is often dancing, singing, being.
- 41:26It's not natural to judge yourself based on what you make.
- 41:30That's not nature.
- 41:32It's not natural to be on our phones all the time.
- 41:35This was created to serve the Mark Zuckerbergs
- 41:38and the Elon Musk's of the world.
- 41:40Like that's who we're serving through our consciousness.
- 41:42Is that who we want to serve?
- 41:43If Mark Zuckerberg came to your door
- 41:45and was like, could I have your attention
- 41:46for seven hours a day, you'd be like, what the fuck?
- 41:49Get the fuck out of my house and give your money over
- 41:52to the poor and to the people.
- 41:54So anything that can connect you with nature
- 41:57and with your nature, like who actually are you?
- 42:00This is something that we can take for granted that we know,
- 42:03but it's actually a daily act of knowing,
- 42:05I'm coming to know and understand
- 42:06because we're always also evolving just like nature.
- 42:09Okay, so I hope that you enjoyed today's conversation, okay?
- 42:14We spoke about how we could overcome creative resistance.
- 42:18This force that's acting against us, this energetic field.
- 42:21And we said, what if we tap into forces
- 42:23that are bigger than us that can propel our inspiration
- 42:26such that is so much greater than any resistance we may feel?
- 42:29We say that there are at least three ways to do this.
- 42:32It is through connection to spirituality, to the divine,
- 42:35to God, to whatever your faith is,
- 42:37to something bigger than you in terms of the mystical dimension of life,
- 42:41the magic of life.
- 42:42Number two, we said it is in serving the collective.
- 42:45It is in stepping into the flea market of life.
- 42:48The idea that your art is an offering
- 42:50and that your art connects you to other people
- 42:52and that the curiosities that you have connect you to other people.
- 42:56The itch you have is going to scratch someone else.
- 42:58The fear you have is going to relieve someone else.
- 43:01The excitement you have is going to excite someone else.
- 43:03This emotional mechanism is what's going to connect us,
- 43:06to each other, and that our highest purpose,
- 43:09there's nothing more divine that we could do
- 43:11than give ourselves to each other.
- 43:13Give to each other.
- 43:14Give the offering in love in this flea market of life.
- 43:20Number three is nature, being in nature,
- 43:22learning from nature, letting nature teach us
- 43:25the wisdom of nature, right?
- 43:27That is going to connect us to the fact that we are also nature.
- 43:31It's going to connect us to a deeper self within us.
- 43:33If we take the time to not do anything
- 43:35that our ancestors couldn't do,
- 43:37so to be with nature, to be in silence,
- 43:39to look at the stars, to look at the moon,
- 43:42just to observe.
- 43:44In Creative Quest by Quest Love,
- 43:45he speaks about micro-meditations
- 43:47that if you struggle to do longer meditations
- 43:50or even as an addition,
- 43:51you could do like a 60 second moment
- 43:53where when you experience something profound,
- 43:55just be still with it.
- 43:59Let it affect you.
- 44:01Cultivate the awareness, the space,
- 44:03to be affected by life, the childlike wonder, the awe.
- 44:08These are forces that are bigger than you.
- 44:09They connect you to the universe.
- 44:11They connect you to the divine.
- 44:13They connect you to nature and to yourself as nature.
- 44:16They connect you to the collective
- 44:17and to yourself as the collective.
- 44:20You are a creator, you are creative,
- 44:22you can create, it does not have to be perfect.
- 44:25It merely has to be an offering to the collective
- 44:27in service of the divine, in service of love,
- 44:29in service of communion, in service of our togetherness,
- 44:33our great oneness, our interdependence.
- 44:36I need you, you need me, I am your other you,
- 44:38you are my other me, the aliveness within me,
- 44:41sees the aliveness within you
- 44:43and hopes to further enliven it.
- 44:45Okay, I love you so much.
- 44:47I hope you enjoyed my offering to the flea market of life.
- 44:50It is here, I'm standing with it and I'm proud
- 44:53and I'm grateful and I'm blessed
- 44:55to have other people within this market with me,
- 44:58doing the same, being brave with their life
- 45:00and with their art, knowing that we each have a limited time
- 45:02on earth, we are here to serve others,
- 45:04we are here to serve each other
- 45:06and we are here to serve the divine.
- 45:08I hope some paradigms have been shifted
- 45:09for you in today's conversation.
