- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30So let me ask you a question. What do you believe happiness
- 0:34is? If I asked you to define
- 0:36happiness, what would you come up with?
- 0:40Have you ever actually sat and thought about it?
- 0:42Have you ever actually said to yourself, well how do I
- 0:44personally define happiness? I think this question is
- 0:49critical to our well-being because if we don't define
- 0:51happiness and we don't put ourselves in a position of
- 0:56regularly examining how we do this, what ends up happening is
- 1:01we start to focus on, as human beings, we all do it anyway,
- 1:05focus on what's wrong. And we say, well, I'm not happy
- 1:08because there's something that makes us unhappy or irritates
- 1:11us. And then we end up going to a
- 1:14position of being unhappy in the world.
- 1:17And I don't think that's necessary because is anybody
- 1:22ever happy 1000% of the time? Well, that depends on how you
- 1:26define it. And it everybody's got
- 1:29individual ways that they go through this.
- 1:32And I think that we're not taught this when we're little.
- 1:36I know we're not taught this when we're little.
- 1:38And I think that telling someone to just be happy is frustrating,
- 1:42especially if you are unhappy. The last thing you want is
- 1:45someone to walk up to you and say, we'll just be happy.
- 1:48Because if I knew how to be happy, don't you think I would
- 1:50be happy? But I'm not happy.
- 1:51So therefore I am in this state of despair and disgust about
- 1:56myself because I just can't do it.
- 1:57But you're saying. So I thought it would be an
- 2:00interesting, you know, jumping off point for us, if you will,
- 2:05to look at how you personally define happiness and tell you
- 2:08how I look at this in my own world.
- 2:10Because I've gone through this multiple times in my life at
- 2:13different points in time and read endless numbers of content
- 2:18on this. And I find it really fascinating
- 2:22how certain people tell you to do things and don't understand
- 2:28where you are, where you're beginning and what's going on.
- 2:30And I don't want to do that to you guys ever.
- 2:32So I'm going to give you some thoughts on how I do it and you
- 2:35can see if this works for you because I personally don't
- 2:39believe that we were meant to be happy all the time.
- 2:43That does not mean we were meant to be miserable as well.
- 2:45I believe emotions are a guidance system and I believe
- 2:49that they are here to give us information and what we do with
- 2:52it pulls us back. So we are supposed to be on a
- 2:55course in our lives. Overall.
- 2:59Our course is like, if you were thinking of it in terms of
- 3:01taking a trip, you are going to go from Boston to LA, let's say,
- 3:06and there's an intention to get on that plane and fly.
- 3:10But the whole time you're flying, of course, everything
- 3:12has to be redirected because of weather and conditions and all
- 3:15these other things that take place and there's constant
- 3:18corrections. Well, that's just like our life,
- 3:20right? We're supposed to, you know,
- 3:22work on seeing what makes us thrive, what gives us passion,
- 3:28if you will, what gives us, you know, that feeling of I'm doing
- 3:32well. And as we're on that course,
- 3:36happiness is part of it. Dalai Lama says the purpose of
- 3:39life is to be happy, and I believe that.
- 3:42I believe the purpose that we are here is to find our version
- 3:45of happy and to work into that every single day.
- 3:49Finding your version of happy, however, you know, because we're
- 3:55human beings and because things happen and because we develop
- 3:58with resistance, the more things that show up in our lives that
- 4:02help shape us, whether they're positive, negative, doesn't
- 4:06matter. We develop with resistance and
- 4:09we resist things naturally as human beings.
- 4:12It's crazy how we do it, but we just do it.
- 4:14And we'll often say, wow, this started out and it was a really
- 4:16crappy situation, but now I can see the benefits of it.
- 4:20But in the beginning, we resisted it.
- 4:22It's just our nature to be more cautious on that.
- 4:25But for me, happiness is something that I work towards
- 4:30every single day. Am I happy 1000% of the time?
- 4:35No, that would be silly and I would never say that that's the
- 4:39truth. But what I do look for is
- 4:42stringing happy moments together and remembering those happy
- 4:46moments because when I can string them together throughout
- 4:49a day, throughout a week, a month and capture things like
- 4:55that, then I can look back and say, wow, I actually do have
- 5:00happy things happening. Even if bad things happen.
- 5:04And it doesn't matter who you are, it doesn't matter what you
- 5:08know, a bounty you have in your life, you're going to have
- 5:11things that happened that aren't fun, that aren't good.
- 5:14And that's OK. It's totally OK because that's
- 5:17the human condition. That's what we do.
- 5:20And you know, we all figure out our way through it one way or
- 5:23another. But stringing these happy events
- 5:26together is a process of training your brain to look for
- 5:32them in the 1st place. So you can start to say, OK,
- 5:36these micro happy events, as I like to call them, these tiny
- 5:39things that happen, You know, your dog is out on a walk with
- 5:44you and your dog happens to look up at you while you're walking
- 5:47because your dog is just here to remind you of how much you're
- 5:50loved. I mean, I'm convinced of that.
- 5:51Dogs are here to remind us how much we're loved.
- 5:54You're walking, your dog looks up at you.
- 5:57That's a happy moment. You know, you're getting
- 6:00unconditional love in that moment.
- 6:01And you might not get any other unconditional love in the day,
- 6:04but from that dog in that moment, he gave it to you.
- 6:08Did you even notice? Well, that's a question.
- 6:10Did you notice? I tend to use my camera.
- 6:14Those of you who are regular listeners know that I do this.
- 6:17I tend to use my camera to take pictures of little things that I
- 6:20find that are my happy moments. Flowers, butterflies walking
- 6:26around, things that are cool, pictures, angles of trees,
- 6:29architecture, anything during my day.
- 6:32And I legitimately have way too many photos in my iPhoto.
- 6:36My husband would be the first one to tell you this, but they
- 6:39are for me the road map of did I find anything, you know,
- 6:42visually today that brought me those little moments of joy.
- 6:45And I do it every day. And that's why you're hearing me
- 6:49out in the chicken coop because they bring me so much joy.
- 6:51You know, I brought them out this morning, bananas and
- 6:54shredded zucchini. And you should have seen how
- 6:56excited they were. They were just going crazy.
- 6:59And I know that that's a joy for them.
- 7:02So I bring that to them and it brings me joy and happiness.
- 7:05And I can string that moment together.
- 7:08And at the end of the day, I have all these moments I can
- 7:11refer back to that say, wow, today I strung a nice thread of
- 7:16happy moments. And I don't have to focus on the
- 7:19fact that it has to be 24/7 because that's ridiculous.
- 7:25It's the beginning of the school year.
- 7:26I know I'm going to have resistance and have things that
- 7:29show up with my son because, oh, back to school, right?
- 7:34That's going to happen. For those of us that have kids
- 7:36that are back in school, some of them are excited, but the
- 7:38majority of them are like, I don't want to do this and it's
- 7:42OK because we're going to work our way through it and we will
- 7:46find happy things. And I will say to him, tell me
- 7:48something happy that happened today.
- 7:50Tell me something great that happened today.
- 7:52Give me those little threads so that I can start to weave
- 7:55something that puts people in a better place and puts myself in
- 7:59a better place. So your challenge is going to be
- 8:03to go out and start to string together some happy thoughts,
- 8:08happy moments, happy recognitions, just those little
- 8:12tiny droplets. And remember, don't fault
- 8:15yourself for not being happy all the time, because nobody is.
- 8:19And if they're telling you that they're full of shit because
- 8:21they're not and it's OK. What we want to do is just
- 8:26constantly navigate ourselves back to a place where we're
- 8:30neutral and where we can take in and where we can notice and
- 8:34where we can be at peace and centered and choose happiness
- 8:39throughout it. Now, do I believe the purpose of
- 8:42life is to be happy? Yes, I do 'cause I think that
- 8:45why would any anybody want to do anything but that?
- 8:49But that is a process that you have to work at and work at and
- 8:54work at and work at. So go string some happy thoughts
- 8:58together today, go find some happy moments and I will see you
- 9:01guys tomorrow. Bye.
