Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Right, As I mentioned the government's pumping more money into
- 0:03Speaker 1: schools to prop up our struggling construction sector fifty eight
- 0:06Speaker 1: million and new funding and one hundred and seventy five
- 0:09Speaker 1: million brought forward funding. We'll go into maintenance work and
- 0:11Speaker 1: fast tracking school infrastructure. Nationwide constructions in deep decline down
- 0:17Speaker 1: nearly ten percent over the past years, so the tradees
- 0:19Speaker 1: will be celebrating. Malcolm Fleming, certified builder's chief executive, joins me.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Now morning Malcolm, Good morning, Francesca, thank you for inviting
- 0:28Speaker 2: me on your program.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Oh that's all right. Hey, Look is this was this
- 0:31Speaker 1: good news yesterday? How needed is this?
- 0:34Speaker 2: It is very much needed and follows up from last
- 0:37Speaker 2: week when we're talking about gd Do you think it's
- 0:39Speaker 2: across the country eroading and constructions downward? Trend of that
- 0:45Speaker 2: was two point two percent, So we're talking about a
- 0:48Speaker 2: good jolt of investment coming quite quickly. While the sound
- 0:53Speaker 2: of it as well is very welcome news.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Indeed, what difference do you think it will make to
- 0:58Speaker 1: the construction industry and can we measure how many jobs
- 1:01Speaker 1: it might create?
- 1:03Speaker 2: We can't measure how many jobs it will we pay,
- 1:05Speaker 2: but I think it's fair to say that it will
- 1:07Speaker 2: allow builders and sub trades as well. So this is
- 1:10Speaker 2: the plumbers and electricians and so forth to get a
- 1:13Speaker 2: sort of forward workload of of projects ahead of them
- 1:17Speaker 2: that I can start relying on depending on where you
- 1:20Speaker 2: are in the country, and it can vary on what
- 1:23Speaker 2: that forward workload looks like. It is very very variable.
- 1:26Speaker 2: So for those who are thinking about their businesses, I
- 1:30Speaker 2: can keep the current staff levels. This is an opportunity say, yes,
- 1:34Speaker 2: the economy is starting to shift and here some work
- 1:36Speaker 2: that they can start quoting on coming up really quick.
- 1:40Speaker 1: And look, there's talk about the fact trade is going
- 1:42Speaker 1: to be working over summer, but I imagine that the
- 1:44Speaker 1: impact of this will be longer than just the summer.
- 1:48Speaker 1: I mean, how long do you think it will keep
- 1:50Speaker 1: the industry going for?
- 1:52Speaker 2: Well, it's schoolwork. Traditionally is a lot of it is
- 1:56Speaker 2: done over the summer period because no easier. Yep, yeah,
- 2:02Speaker 2: around school teeds, around all the rest of it. So
- 2:04Speaker 2: they are the trains are quite used to that type
- 2:07Speaker 2: of work. I just really want to emphasize that it's
- 2:10Speaker 2: a good push of work now that is very much
- 2:15Speaker 2: needed and will start giving a bit more confidence back
- 2:19Speaker 2: into the market. So even though I'm going to conference
- 2:21Speaker 2: as our own ones don't Certified Buildings Conference a few
- 2:24Speaker 2: months ago. Now in a place like Zie Built so
- 2:27Speaker 2: Buildings Jet, there is a sort of quite confidence around
- 2:29Speaker 2: there that better days are coming on the track and
- 2:31Speaker 2: this is an example that the better day is starting
- 2:34Speaker 2: to emerge.
- 2:35Speaker 1: So, Malcolm, it sounds like it's a good short term solution.
- 2:39Speaker 1: What about you know, are there other ways that the
- 2:41Speaker 1: government could be giving the constructed construction industry a bit
- 2:46Speaker 1: of a boost.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Well, I think this is an example that the government
- 2:49Speaker 2: is starting to listen to the concerns of industry that
- 2:52Speaker 2: the pipeline of work for some areas like school works,
- 2:57Speaker 2: like community housing have been a co stuff over the
- 3:01Speaker 2: last couple of years and starting to see the impact
- 3:05Speaker 2: that that has had that we've had people exiting our business,
- 3:08Speaker 2: so our industry going overseas or just leaving the industry
- 3:11Speaker 2: and priority. And if we'll continue to go as we are,
- 3:15Speaker 2: there's going to be a real issue in the industry
- 3:18Speaker 2: beund a gear up again when the work starts coming in,
- 3:21Speaker 2: and that's already been a rat main concern of ours
- 3:23Speaker 2: as well. The other good news about all this just
- 3:25Speaker 2: putting aside. It's a construction industry. It's good news for schools.
- 3:29Speaker 2: It's critical our country's children be educating in the classrooms
- 3:33Speaker 2: that are fit for purpose, that are warm, dry and
- 3:36Speaker 2: healthy spaces, and that they need good designers and good
- 3:40Speaker 2: builders to make that happen.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Absolutely. I was a little bit rude before Markman I said,
- 3:44Speaker 1: I've really struggled to get tradees to work over summer,
- 3:46Speaker 1: but I suppose needs must.
- 3:49Speaker 2: It is very much a case Francisca. I think that
- 3:55Speaker 2: if Tholls aren't going on the holiday this summer, they'll
- 3:59Speaker 2: be pleased to be able to put that aside.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Malcolm Fleming, thanks so much for your time this morning.
