- 0:00Speaker 1: Chapter thirteen. Two worshippers unto certain which trusted in themselves
- 0:05Speaker 1: that they were righteous and despised others. Christ spoke the
- 0:09Speaker 1: parable of the Pharisee and the Publican. The pharise goes
- 0:13Speaker 1: up to the temple to worship, not because he feels
- 0:15Speaker 1: that he is a sinner in need of pardon, but
- 0:18Speaker 1: because he thinks himself righteous and hopes to win commendation.
- 0:22Speaker 1: His worship he regards as an act of merit that
- 0:24Speaker 1: will recommend him to God. At the same time it
- 0:28Speaker 1: will give the people a high opinion of his piety.
- 0:31Speaker 1: He hopes to secure favor with both God and man.
- 0:34Speaker 1: His worship is prompted by self interest, and he is
- 0:38Speaker 1: full of self praise. He looks at he walks it,
- 0:41Speaker 1: he prays it, drawing apart from others, as if to say,
- 0:45Speaker 1: come not near to me, for I am holier than thou.
- 0:48Speaker 1: He stands and prays with himself wholly self satisfied. He
- 0:53Speaker 1: thinks that God and men regard him with the same complacency. God,
- 0:58Speaker 1: I thank THEE, he says, said, I I am not
- 1:00Speaker 1: as other men are extortioners, unjust adulterers, or even as
- 1:04Speaker 1: this publican. He judges his character not by the holy
- 1:08Speaker 1: character of God, but by the character of other men.
- 1:12Speaker 1: His mind is turned away from God to humanity. This
- 1:15Speaker 1: is the secret of his self satisfaction. He proceeds to
- 1:19Speaker 1: recount his good deeds. I fast twice in the week.
- 1:23Speaker 1: I give tides of all that I possess. The religion
- 1:26Speaker 1: of the Pharisee does not touch the soul. He is
- 1:29Speaker 1: not seeking god likeness of character, a heart filled with
- 1:33Speaker 1: love and mercy. He is satisfied with the religion that
- 1:36Speaker 1: has to do only with the outward life. His righteousness
- 1:41Speaker 1: is his own, the fruit of his own works, and
- 1:43Speaker 1: judged by a human standard. Whoever trusts in himself that
- 1:48Speaker 1: he is righteous will despise others. As the Pharisee judges
- 1:52Speaker 1: himself by other men, so he judges other men by himself.
- 1:56Speaker 1: His righteousness is estimated by theirs, and the worse they are,
- 2:00Speaker 1: the more righteous. By contrast, he appears his self righteousness
- 2:04Speaker 1: leads to accusing other men he condemns as transgressors of
- 2:09Speaker 1: God's law. Thus he is making manifest the very spirit
- 2:12Speaker 1: of Satan, the accuser of the brethren. With this spirit,
- 2:17Speaker 1: it is impossible for him to enter into communion with God.
- 2:20Speaker 1: He goes down to his house, destitute of the divine blessing.
- 2:25Speaker 1: The publican had gone to the temple with other worshipers,
- 2:28Speaker 1: but he soon drew apart from them, as unworthy to
- 2:30Speaker 1: unite in their devotions. Standing afar off, he would not
- 2:35Speaker 1: lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but
- 2:37Speaker 1: smote upon his breast in bitter anguish and self abhorrence.
- 2:42Speaker 1: He felt that he had transgressed against God, that he
- 2:45Speaker 1: was sinful and polluted. He could not expect even pity
- 2:48Speaker 1: from those around him, for they looked upon him with contempt.
- 2:53Speaker 1: He knew that he had no merit to commend him
- 2:55Speaker 1: to God, and in utter self despair, he cried God
- 2:58Speaker 1: be merciful to me. A sinner, he did not compare
- 3:02Speaker 1: himself with others. Overwhelmed with a sense of guilt, he
- 3:06Speaker 1: stood as if alone in God's presence. His only desire
- 3:09Speaker 1: was for pardon and peace. His only plea was the
- 3:12Speaker 1: mercy of God, and he was blessed. I tell you,
- 3:16Speaker 1: Christ said, this man went down to his house justified
- 3:19Speaker 1: rather than the other. The pharisee and the publican represent
- 3:24Speaker 1: two great classes into which those who come to worship
- 3:27Speaker 1: God are divided, their first two representatives are found, and
- 3:31Speaker 1: the first two children that were born into the world.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Cain thought himself righteous, and he came to God with
- 3:37Speaker 1: a thank offering. Only he made no confession of sin
- 3:41Speaker 1: and acknowledged no need of mercy. But Abel came with
- 3:44Speaker 1: the blood that pointed to the lamb of God. He
- 3:47Speaker 1: came as a sinner, confessing himself lost. His only hope
- 3:51Speaker 1: was the unmerited love of God. The Lord had respect
- 3:55Speaker 1: to his offering, but to Cain and his offering, he
- 3:57Speaker 1: had not respect. The sense of need. The recognition of
- 4:01Speaker 1: our poverty and sin is the very first condition of
- 4:04Speaker 1: acceptance with God. Blessed are the poor in spirit, For
- 4:08Speaker 1: theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. For each of the
- 4:11Speaker 1: classes represented by the Pharisee and the publican. There is
- 4:14Speaker 1: a lesson in the history of the apostle Peter. In
- 4:18Speaker 1: his early discipleship, Peter thought himself strong like the Pharisee.
- 4:23Speaker 1: In his own estimation, he was not as other men are.
- 4:26Speaker 1: When Christ, on the eve of his betrayal, forewarned his disciples,
- 4:30Speaker 1: all ye shall be offended because of me. This night,
- 4:33Speaker 1: Peter confidently declared, although all shall be offended, yet will
- 4:37Speaker 1: not I. Peter did not know his own danger. Self
- 4:42Speaker 1: confidence misled him. He thought himself able to withstand temptation.
- 4:47Speaker 1: But in a few short hours the test came, and
- 4:49Speaker 1: with cursing and swearing, he denied his Lord. When the
- 4:53Speaker 1: crowing of the cock reminded him of the words of Christ.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Surprised and shocked at what he had just done, he
- 5:00Speaker 1: turned and looked at his master. At that moment, Christ
- 5:03Speaker 1: looked at Peter, and beneath that grieved look in which
- 5:06Speaker 1: compassion and love for him were blended, Peter understood himself.
- 5:11Speaker 1: He went out and wept bitterly. That look of Christ's
- 5:15Speaker 1: broke his heart. Peter had come to the turning point,
- 5:18Speaker 1: and bitterly did he repent his sin. He was like
- 5:21Speaker 1: the publican in his contrition and repentance, and like the
- 5:24Speaker 1: publican he found mercy. The look of Christ assured him
- 5:28Speaker 1: of pardon. Now his self confidence was gone. Never again
- 5:33Speaker 1: were the old boastful assertions repeated Christ. After his resurrection
- 5:38Speaker 1: thrice tested Peter Simon, son of Jonas, he said, lovest
- 5:42Speaker 1: thou me more than these? Peter did not now exalt
- 5:46Speaker 1: himself above his brethren. He appealed to the one who
- 5:49Speaker 1: could read his heart. Lord, he said, thou knowest all things,
- 5:52Speaker 1: Thou knowest that I love thee. Then he received his commission,
- 5:57Speaker 1: a work broader and more delicate than had he heretofore
- 6:00Speaker 1: been his was appointed him. Christ bade him feed the
- 6:04Speaker 1: sheep and the lambs, in thus committing to his stewardship
- 6:07Speaker 1: the souls for whom the Savior had laid down his
- 6:10Speaker 1: own life. Christ gave to Peter the strongest proof of
- 6:13Speaker 1: confidence in his restoration. The once restless, boastful, self confident
- 6:18Speaker 1: disciple had become subdued in contrite. Henceforth he followed his
- 6:23Speaker 1: Lord in self denial and self sacrifice. He was a
- 6:27Speaker 1: partaker of Christ's sufferings, and when Christ shall sit upon
- 6:30Speaker 1: the throne of his glory, Peter will be a partaker
- 6:33Speaker 1: in his glory. The evil that led to Peter's fall,
- 6:37Speaker 1: and that shut out the Pharisee from communion with God,
- 6:40Speaker 1: is proving the ruin of thousands today. There is nothing
- 6:43Speaker 1: so offensive to God or so dangerous to the human
- 6:46Speaker 1: soul as pride and self sufficiency. Of all sins, it
- 6:50Speaker 1: is the most hopeless, the most incurable. Peter's fall was
- 6:55Speaker 1: not instantaneous, but gradual self confidence led him to the
- 6:59Speaker 1: belief that he was saved, and step after step was
- 7:02Speaker 1: taken in the downward path until he could deny his master.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Never can we safely put confidence him self or feel
- 7:10Speaker 1: this side of heaven that we are secure against temptation.
- 7:14Speaker 1: Those who accept the Savior, however, sincere their conversion, should
- 7:18Speaker 1: never be taught to say or to feel that they
- 7:20Speaker 1: are saved. This is misleading. Every one should be taught
- 7:24Speaker 1: to cherish hope and faith. But even when we give
- 7:27Speaker 1: ourselves to Christ and know that He accepts us, we
- 7:30Speaker 1: are not beyond the reach of temptation. God's word declares
- 7:35Speaker 1: many shall be purified and made white and tried. Only
- 7:39Speaker 1: he who endures the trial will receive the crown of life.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Those who accept Christ and in their first confidence say
- 7:46Speaker 1: I am saved are in danger of trusting to themselves.
- 7:50Speaker 1: They lose sight of their own weakness and their constant
- 7:53Speaker 1: need of divine strength. They are unprepared for Satan's devices,
- 7:57Speaker 1: and under temptation, many like Peter, fall into the very
- 8:01Speaker 1: depths of sin. We are admonished. Let him that thinketh
- 8:05Speaker 1: he standeth, take heed lest he fall Our only safety
- 8:09Speaker 1: is in constant distrust of self and dependence on Christ.
- 8:14Speaker 1: It was necessary for Peter to learn his own defects
- 8:17Speaker 1: of character and his need of the power and grace
- 8:19Speaker 1: of Christ. The Lord could not save him from trial,
- 8:23Speaker 1: but he could have saved him from defeat. Had Peter
- 8:26Speaker 1: been willing to receive Christ's warning, he would have been
- 8:29Speaker 1: watching unto prayer. He would have walked with fear and
- 8:32Speaker 1: trembling lest his feet should stumble, and he would have
- 8:35Speaker 1: received divine help so that Satan could not have gained
- 8:38Speaker 1: the victory. It was through self sufficiency that Peter fell,
- 8:43Speaker 1: and it was through repentance and humiliation that his feet
- 8:46Speaker 1: were again established. In the record of his experience, every
- 8:50Speaker 1: repenting sinner may find encouragement. Though Peter had grievously sinned,
- 8:55Speaker 1: he was not forsaken. The words of Christ were written
- 8:58Speaker 1: upon his soul. I have prayed for thee that thy
- 9:01Speaker 1: faith fail not in his bitter agony of remorse. This
- 9:05Speaker 1: prayer and the memory of Christ's look of love and pity,
- 9:08Speaker 1: gave him hope. Christ, after his resurrection, remembered Peter and
- 9:12Speaker 1: gave the angel the message for the women go your way.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Tell his disciples, and Peter, that he goeth before you
- 9:19Speaker 1: into Galilee, there shall ye see him. Peter's repentance was
- 9:24Speaker 1: accepted by the sin pardoning Savior, and the same compassion
- 9:29Speaker 1: that reached out to rescue Peter is extended to every
- 9:31Speaker 1: soul who has fallen under temptation. It is Satan's special
- 9:35Speaker 1: device to lead man into sin and then leave him
- 9:38Speaker 1: helpless and trembling, fearing to seek for pardon. But why
- 9:42Speaker 1: should we fear when God has said, let him take
- 9:45Speaker 1: hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me.
- 9:47Speaker 1: And he shall make peace with me. Every provision has
- 9:51Speaker 1: been made for our infirmities, every encouragement offered us to
- 9:55Speaker 1: come to Christ. Christ offered up his broken body to
- 9:58Speaker 1: purchase back God's hearing to give man another trial. Wherefore
- 10:03Speaker 1: he is able also to save them, to the uttermost
- 10:05Speaker 1: that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth
- 10:08Speaker 1: to make intercession for them by his spotless life, his obedience,
- 10:14Speaker 1: his death on the cross of Calvary, Christ interceded for
- 10:17Speaker 1: the lost race. And now not as a mere petitioner
- 10:21Speaker 1: does the captain of our salvation intercede for us, but
- 10:24Speaker 1: as a conqueror, claiming his victory. His offering is complete,
- 10:29Speaker 1: and as our intercessor, he executes his self appointed work,
- 10:33Speaker 1: holding before God the censer containing his own spotless merits,
- 10:36Speaker 1: and the prayer's confessions and thanksgiving of his people, perfumed
- 10:41Speaker 1: with the fragrance of his righteousness. These ascend to God
- 10:44Speaker 1: as a sweet savor. The offering is wholly acceptable and
- 10:48Speaker 1: pardon covers all transgression. Christ has pledged himself to be
- 10:53Speaker 1: our substitute and surety, and he neglects no one. He
- 10:57Speaker 1: who could not see human beings exposed to eternal ruin
- 11:00Speaker 1: without pouring out his soul into death in their behalf,
- 11:03Speaker 1: will look with pity and compassion upon every soul who
- 11:06Speaker 1: realizes that he cannot save himself. He will look upon
- 11:10Speaker 1: no trembling suppliant without raising him up. He who, through
- 11:14Speaker 1: his own atonement, provided for man an infinite fund of
- 11:17Speaker 1: moral power, will not fail to employ this power. In
- 11:20Speaker 1: our behalf. We may take our sins and sorrows to
- 11:24Speaker 1: his feet, for he loves us. His every look and
- 11:27Speaker 1: word invites our confidence. He will shape and mold our
- 11:30Speaker 1: characters according to his own will. In the whole Satanic force,
- 11:35Speaker 1: there is not power to overcome one soul, who in
- 11:38Speaker 1: simple trust casts himself on Christ. He giveth power to
- 11:42Speaker 1: the faint, and to them that have no might. He
- 11:44Speaker 1: increaseth strength if we confess our sins. He is faithful
- 11:49Speaker 1: and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse
- 11:51Speaker 1: us from all unrighteousness. The Lord says, only acknowledge thine iniquity,
- 11:56Speaker 1: that thou hast transgressed against the Lord Thy God. Then
- 12:00Speaker 1: will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall
- 12:03Speaker 1: be clean from all your filthiness, and from all your idols.
- 12:06Speaker 1: Will I cleanse you. But we must have a knowledge
- 12:09Speaker 1: of ourselves, a knowledge that will result in contrition, before
- 12:13Speaker 1: we can find pardon and peace. The Pharisee felt no
- 12:17Speaker 1: conviction of sin. The Holy Spirit could not work with him.
- 12:22Speaker 1: His soul was encased in a self righteous armor, which
- 12:24Speaker 1: the arrows of God, barbed and true aimed by angel hands,
- 12:28Speaker 1: failed to penetrate. It is only he who knows himself
- 12:32Speaker 1: to be a sinner that Christ can save. He came
- 12:35Speaker 1: to heal the broken hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives,
- 12:39Speaker 1: and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at
- 12:42Speaker 1: liberty them that are bruised, But they that our whole
- 12:45Speaker 1: need not a physician. We must know our real condition,
- 12:49Speaker 1: or we shall not feel our need of Christ's help.
- 12:52Speaker 1: We must understand our danger, or we shall not flee
- 12:55Speaker 1: to the refuge. We must feel the pain of our wounds,
- 12:58Speaker 1: or we shall not desire healing. The Lord says, because
- 13:03Speaker 1: thou sayest I am rich and increased with goods, and
- 13:06Speaker 1: have need of nothing, and knowest not that thou art
- 13:09Speaker 1: wretched and miserable, and poor, and blind and naked, I
- 13:12Speaker 1: counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire,
- 13:15Speaker 1: that thou mayest be rich and white. Raiment that thou
- 13:18Speaker 1: mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness
- 13:21Speaker 1: do not appear, and anoint thine eyes with thy save
- 13:24Speaker 1: that thou mayst see The gold tried in the fire
- 13:27Speaker 1: is faith that works by love. Only this can bring
- 13:31Speaker 1: us into harmony with God. We may be active, we
- 13:34Speaker 1: may do much work, But without love such love as
- 13:37Speaker 1: dwelt in the heart of Christ, we can never be
- 13:40Speaker 1: numbered with the family of heaven. No man can of
- 13:44Speaker 1: himself understand his errors. The heart is deceitful above all things,
- 13:48Speaker 1: and desperately wicked. Who can know it? The lips may
- 13:52Speaker 1: express a poverty of soul that the heart does not acknowledge.
- 13:56Speaker 1: While speaking to God of poverty of spirit, the heart
- 13:59Speaker 1: may be swelling the conceit of its own superior humility
- 14:02Speaker 1: and exalted righteousness. In one way only can a true
- 14:06Speaker 1: knowledge of self be obtained. We must behold Christ. It
- 14:11Speaker 1: is ignorance of Him that makes men so uplifted in
- 14:14Speaker 1: their own righteousness. When we contemplate His purity and excellence,
- 14:19Speaker 1: we shall see our own weakness and poverty and defects
- 14:22Speaker 1: as they really are. We shall see ourselves lost and hopeless,
- 14:26Speaker 1: clad in garments of self righteousness like every other sinner.
- 14:30Speaker 1: We shall see that if we are ever saved, it
- 14:33Speaker 1: will not be through our own goodness, but through God's
- 14:36Speaker 1: infinite grace. The prayer of the Publican was heard because
- 14:40Speaker 1: it showed dependence, reaching forth to lay hold upon omnipotence self.
- 14:45Speaker 1: To the Publican appeared nothing but shame. Thus it must
- 14:48Speaker 1: be seen by all who seek God by faith, faith
- 14:53Speaker 1: that renounces all self trust. The needy suppliant is to
- 14:56Speaker 1: lay hold upon infinite power. No outward obsord servances can
- 15:00Speaker 1: take the place of simple faith and entire renunciation of self.
- 15:05Speaker 1: But no man can empty himself of self. We can
- 15:08Speaker 1: only consent for Christ to accomplish the work. Then the
- 15:12Speaker 1: language of the soul will be Lord, Take my heart,
- 15:15Speaker 1: for I cannot give it. It is Thy property. Keep
- 15:18Speaker 1: it pure, for I cannot keep it. For THEE Save
- 15:21Speaker 1: me in spite of myself, my weak, un christ like self.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Mold me, fashion me, Raise me into a pure and
- 15:28Speaker 1: holy atmosphere where the rich current of Thy love can
- 15:31Speaker 1: flow through my soul. It is not only at the
- 15:35Speaker 1: beginning of the Christian life that this renunciation of self
- 15:38Speaker 1: is to be made. At every advanced step heavenward, it
- 15:41Speaker 1: is to be renewed. All our good works are dependent
- 15:45Speaker 1: on a power outside of ourselves. Therefore, there needs to
- 15:48Speaker 1: be a continual reaching out of the heart after God,
- 15:52Speaker 1: a continual earnest, heart breaking confession of sin and humbling
- 15:56Speaker 1: of the soul before Him. Only by constant renunciation of
- 16:00Speaker 1: self and dependence on Christ can we walk safely. The
- 16:04Speaker 1: nearer we come to Jesus, the more clearly we discern
- 16:07Speaker 1: the purity of his character, the more clearly we shall
- 16:10Speaker 1: discern the exceeding sinfulness of sin, and the less we
- 16:13Speaker 1: shall feel like exalting ourselves. Those whom Heaven recognizes as
- 16:18Speaker 1: holy ones are the last to parade their own goodness.
- 16:21Speaker 1: The apostle Peter became a faithful minister of Christ, and
- 16:25Speaker 1: he was greatly honored with divine light and power. He
- 16:28Speaker 1: had an active part in the upholding of Christ's Church.
- 16:31Speaker 1: But Peter never forgot the fearful experience of his humiliation.
- 16:36Speaker 1: His sin was forgiven. Yet well he knew that for
- 16:38Speaker 1: the weakness of character which had caused his fall, only
- 16:42Speaker 1: the grace of Christ could avail. He found in himself
- 16:45Speaker 1: nothing in which to glory. None of the apostles or
- 16:49Speaker 1: prophets ever claimed to be without sin. Men who have
- 16:52Speaker 1: lived nearest to God, men who would sacrifice life itself
- 16:56Speaker 1: rather than knowingly commit a wrong act. Men whom God
- 16:59Speaker 1: had honored with divine light and power, have confessed the
- 17:02Speaker 1: sinfulness of their own nature. They have put no confidence
- 17:06Speaker 1: in the flesh, have claimed no righteousness of their own,
- 17:10Speaker 1: but have trusted wholly in the righteousness of Christ. So
- 17:13Speaker 1: will it be with all who behold Christ. At every
- 17:16Speaker 1: advanced step in Christian experience, our repentance will deepen. It
- 17:21Speaker 1: is to those whom the Lord has forgiven, to those
- 17:24Speaker 1: whom he acknowledges as his people. That he says, then
- 17:27Speaker 1: shall ye remember your own evil ways and your doings
- 17:30Speaker 1: that were not good, and shall loathe yourselves in your
- 17:32Speaker 1: own sight. Again, he says, I will establish my covenant
- 17:37Speaker 1: with THEE, and thou shalt know that I am the Lord,
- 17:40Speaker 1: that thou mayst remember and be confounded, and never open
- 17:43Speaker 1: thy mouth any more because of thy shame. When I
- 17:46Speaker 1: am pacified toward THEE for all that thou hast done,
- 17:48Speaker 1: saith the Lord God. Then our lips will not be
- 17:52Speaker 1: opened in self glorification. We shall know that our sufficiency
- 17:56Speaker 1: is in Christ alone. We shall make the apostles can
- 18:00Speaker 1: fashion our own. I know that in me that is
- 18:03Speaker 1: in my flesh dwelleth no good thing. God forbid that
- 18:07Speaker 1: I should glory save in the cross of our Lord
- 18:09Speaker 1: Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me
- 18:13Speaker 1: and I unto the world. In harmony with this experience
- 18:17Speaker 1: is the command work out your own salvation with fear
- 18:20Speaker 1: and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you
- 18:23Speaker 1: both to will and to do of His good pleasure.
- 18:26Speaker 1: God does not bid you fear that He will fail
- 18:28Speaker 1: to fulfill his promises, that his patience will weary or
- 18:32Speaker 1: his compassion be found wanting. Fear lest your will shall
- 18:36Speaker 1: not be held in subjection to Christ's will, Lest your
- 18:39Speaker 1: hereditary and cultivated traits of character shall control your life.
- 18:43Speaker 1: It is God which worketh in you both to will
- 18:45Speaker 1: and to do of His good pleasure. Fear must self
- 18:49Speaker 1: shall interpose between your soul and the great Master worker.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Fear must self will shall mar the high purpose that
- 18:56Speaker 1: through you God desires to accomplish. Fear to try us
- 19:00Speaker 1: to your own strength. Fear to withdraw your hand from
- 19:03Speaker 1: the hand of Christ, and attempt to walk life's pathway
- 19:05Speaker 1: without His abiding presence. We need to shun everything that
- 19:10Speaker 1: would encourage pride and self sufficiency. Therefore we should beware
- 19:14Speaker 1: of giving or receiving flattery or praise. It is Satan's
- 19:18Speaker 1: work to flatter. He deals in flattery as well as
- 19:21Speaker 1: in accusing and in condemnation. Thus he seeks to work
- 19:26Speaker 1: the ruin of the soul. Those who give praise to
- 19:29Speaker 1: men are used by Satan as his agents. Let the
- 19:32Speaker 1: workers for Christ direct every word of praise away from themselves.
- 19:36Speaker 1: Let self be put out of sight. Christ alone is
- 19:39Speaker 1: to be exalted unto Him that loved us and washed
- 19:43Speaker 1: us from our sins in his own blood. Let every
- 19:46Speaker 1: eye be directed, and praise from every heart assent. The
- 19:50Speaker 1: life in which the fear of the Lord is cherished
- 19:53Speaker 1: will not be a life of sadness and gloom. It
- 19:56Speaker 1: is the absence of Christ that makes the countenance sad
- 19:59Speaker 1: and the life of pilgrimage of size. Those who are
- 20:02Speaker 1: filled with self esteem and self love do not feel
- 20:05Speaker 1: the need of a living personal union with Christ. The
- 20:09Speaker 1: heart that has not fallen on the rock is proud
- 20:11Speaker 1: of its wholeness. Men want a dignified religion. They desire
- 20:16Speaker 1: to walk in a path wide enough to take in
- 20:18Speaker 1: their own attributes. Their self love, their love of popularity,
- 20:22Speaker 1: and love of praise exclude the Savior from their hearts.
- 20:25Speaker 1: And without him there is gloom and sadness. But Christ
- 20:30Speaker 1: dwelling in the soul is a well spring of joy
- 20:32Speaker 1: for all who receive Him. The very keynote of the
- 20:35Speaker 1: Word of God is rejoicing. For thus saith the high
- 20:39Speaker 1: and lofty one that inhabiteth Eternity, whose name is Holy.
- 20:43Speaker 1: I dwell in the high and holy place with him.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to
- 20:49Speaker 1: revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the
- 20:51Speaker 1: heart of the contrite ones. It was when Moses was
- 20:56Speaker 1: hidden in the cleft of the rock that he beheld
- 20:58Speaker 1: the glory of God. It is when we hide in
- 21:00Speaker 1: the riven rock that Christ will cover us with his
- 21:03Speaker 1: own pierced hand, and we shall hear what the Lord
- 21:06Speaker 1: saith unto his servants. To us, as to Moses, God
- 21:09Speaker 1: will reveal himself as merciful and gracious, long suffering, and
- 21:14Speaker 1: abundant in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving
- 21:18Speaker 1: iniquity and transgression and sin. The work of redemption involves
- 21:23Speaker 1: consequences of which it is difficult for man to have
- 21:26Speaker 1: any conception. I hath not seen nor ear heard, neither
- 21:31Speaker 1: have entered into the heart of man the things which
- 21:34Speaker 1: God hath prepared for them that love Him. As a sinner,
- 21:37Speaker 1: drawn by the power of Christ, approaches the uplifted cross
- 21:41Speaker 1: and prostrates himself before it. There is a new creation,
- 21:45Speaker 1: a new heart has given him. He becomes a new
- 21:48Speaker 1: creature in Christ. Jesus holiness finds that it has nothing
- 21:52Speaker 1: more to require. God himself is the justifier of him
- 21:56Speaker 1: which believeth in Jesus, and whom he justified, than he
- 22:00Speaker 1: also glorified. Great as is the shame and degradation through sin,
- 22:05Speaker 1: even greater will be the honor and exaltation through redeeming love.
- 22:09Speaker 1: To human beings striving for conformity to the divine image.
- 22:13Speaker 1: There is imparted an outlay of Heaven's treasure, an excellency
- 22:16Speaker 1: of power that will place them higher than even the
- 22:19Speaker 1: angels who have never fallen. Thus saith the Lord, the
- 22:23Speaker 1: Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One, to him whom
- 22:26Speaker 1: man despiseth, to him whom the nation abhorth kings shall
- 22:31Speaker 1: see and arise princes also shall worship. Because of the
- 22:34Speaker 1: Lord that is faithful and the Holy One of Israel.
- 22:37Speaker 1: And he shall choose thee. For every one that exalteth
- 22:41Speaker 1: himself shall be abased, and he that humbleth himself shall
- 22:45Speaker 1: be exalted. End of Chapter thirteen.
