- 0:00Speaker 1: Back here in the Dunkin Music Lounge at iHeart Radio

- 0:08Speaker 1: guests and our staff here at iHeartRadio hard for Thursday Night,
- 0:13Speaker 1: Yukon Notre Dame six point thirty on the radio from
- 0:16Speaker 1: Percell Pavilion. We joined us for all the action spread
- 0:19Speaker 1: here in the Yukon Sports Network, the Varsity Network App,
- 0:21Speaker 1: in the Varsity Network dot Com. You're trying to sign
- 0:24Speaker 1: football's right, we have ninety seven to nine Fox Sports.
- 0:27Speaker 2: You do it, you know when you're a basketball coach, right, footballs.
- 0:30Speaker 3: That's right, and you're well there they're nerve footballs.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Like you used to have as kids. Their footballs are
- 0:36Speaker 1: in the seventies, right yeah. Us you played with their footballs.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Yeah right, yeah, with the basket you hang in the
- 0:41Speaker 2: back of your on the door.
- 0:42Speaker 3: Oh nerf basketball? Oh yeah, oh for sure. Yeah.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Every parent's nightmare.
- 0:46Speaker 3: That's right, because you know something's gonna get broken. Absolutely,
- 0:49Speaker 3: that's right. Well. Sarah Strong's off to a fabulous start.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Eight games in back to back twenty point games, Biggiest
- 0:55Speaker 1: Player and Rookie of the Week, third time she's been
- 0:58Speaker 1: Rookie of the week. But all that aside, I saw
- 1:02Speaker 1: something that we have yet to see, and that was
- 1:05Speaker 1: the last play of the first half. Sarah had the
- 1:08Speaker 1: ball top of the key between the circles. You two
- 1:12Speaker 1: are going back and forth when to go, and then
- 1:15Speaker 1: she goes and she puts up a three ball. Now
- 1:18Speaker 1: the end result ball goes out of bounds then as
- 1:20Speaker 1: he hit the three to and in the half. But
- 1:22Speaker 1: that's something different. Usually it's Page with the ball in
- 1:24Speaker 1: her hands making the play. This time it was Sarah,
- 1:27Speaker 1: and I'm sure that's not the last time we're going
- 1:29Speaker 1: to see that happen.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Well, I think Page was on the bench at the time.
- 1:32Speaker 2: I'm not sure. I don't know whether I had taken
- 1:35Speaker 2: her out, okay, but any either way, the best defender
- 1:39Speaker 2: on the team was on Page, and so that means
- 1:44Speaker 2: Sarah had someone other than the best defender. So you know,
- 1:49Speaker 2: the guys that are you know, Jason's a practice player
- 1:53Speaker 2: over there, and they know she's really a handful of
- 1:59Speaker 2: trying to guard her one one. It's not easy. So
- 2:05Speaker 2: I wanted her to just take her man in the
- 2:09Speaker 2: lane and they're either going to have to foul her
- 2:11Speaker 2: or they're gonna let her score one or the other.
- 2:13Speaker 2: And she looked at me like what And I never understood,
- 2:21Speaker 2: you know, why a good player would ask her coach
- 2:25Speaker 2: what should I do with the ball? You know, Sveta
- 2:29Speaker 2: would have gotten three shots up in those thirteen seconds,
- 2:35Speaker 2: so Maya would have gotten five shots up in those
- 2:38Speaker 2: fifteen seconds. But she's just a young kid who just
- 2:42Speaker 2: wants to do the right thing. And that's what's so
- 2:44Speaker 2: beautiful about her. She's just an innocent kid who just
- 2:49Speaker 2: is trying to fit in and in the meantime, she
- 2:51Speaker 2: just you know, there isn't a facet of the game
- 2:55Speaker 2: that she isn't pretty good at. And her best gill
- 2:59Speaker 2: might be her past sing ability.
- 3:02Speaker 3: She's got sneaky quick hands too.
- 3:03Speaker 2: And she's got great hands. She reminds me of Nikisha
- 3:06Speaker 2: Sales in that respect, Nikeisha might be. We've had a
- 3:10Speaker 2: couple of players that had great, great, great, great great
- 3:12Speaker 2: hands when it came to that, Nakeisha, Rita Williams, Renae Montgomery,
- 3:19Speaker 2: Sarah Strol. They were the ones that you know, really
- 3:23Speaker 2: stood out for me.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Gin know what about her basketball IQ. You haven't had
- 3:27Speaker 1: many freshmen that have had the IQ that she has
- 3:30Speaker 1: at such a young age.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Yeah, there's been a couple, but it's it's rare where
- 3:37Speaker 2: they see the whole floor and they know where all
- 3:40Speaker 2: their teammates are and more importantly, they know where the
- 3:42Speaker 2: defense is. So growing up in the basketball family, I
- 3:47Speaker 2: think she was around basketball a lot and she had
- 3:51Speaker 2: a chance to see it live firsthand from the time
- 3:54Speaker 2: she was born. And you know, she's got the great
- 3:58Speaker 2: DNA and she's got the right skill set, so she
- 4:03Speaker 2: knows the game and she can do things that you
- 4:07Speaker 2: know a lot of kids can't do. So put all
- 4:09Speaker 2: that together and that's pretty it's pretty good combination.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Yeah, as she had a nice game coming off the bench,
- 4:16Speaker 1: right off the bat seven points in the first quarter
- 4:18Speaker 1: of the twenty eight you had in the first quarter,
- 4:20Speaker 1: and she seems very comfortable. But when she's get that,
- 4:23Speaker 1: when she has that pull up, that elbow, that mid range,
- 4:26Speaker 1: I mean, that's a lost art in this day and age.
- 4:29Speaker 3: She's she's been able to master it pretty well.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Yeah, a lot of a lot of coaches, you know,
- 4:33Speaker 2: the analytics, it's just I guess the you know, the
- 4:38Speaker 2: new way of coaching is you just look at the
- 4:40Speaker 2: analytics and you do it, you know, like in baseball,
- 4:44Speaker 2: how many pitches is that guy thrown? Or I get
- 4:46Speaker 2: him out? Why? Well, because the numbers say you have
- 4:48Speaker 2: to get him out. I meanwhile, the guy's throwing a
- 4:50Speaker 2: no hitter, Well, you got to take him out. That's
- 4:52Speaker 2: what it says, you know. And the same thing in basketball,
- 4:56Speaker 2: that's a bad shot and I never understood why. And
- 4:59Speaker 2: wide open by a really good shooter from fifteen feet
- 5:02Speaker 2: is a bad shot. So I don't believe in it.
- 5:05Speaker 2: And Ash That's that's why we recruited her because she's
- 5:09Speaker 2: got a fabulous mid range game, and you know, I
- 5:14Speaker 2: encourage her to do it even more often. I don't
- 5:17Speaker 2: think she does it often enough. And it is a
- 5:20Speaker 2: lost art people don't, you know, people don't value it
- 5:25Speaker 2: anymore as much as before.
- 5:27Speaker 3: But we do.
- 5:28Speaker 2: And she's terrific at it. And you know.
- 5:32Speaker 3: We're lucky.
- 5:32Speaker 2: We've got two kids coming off the bench that started
- 5:34Speaker 2: thirty five games or something like that for us last year.
- 5:37Speaker 2: So you know, I think when we sub and the
- 5:40Speaker 2: other team subs, I think we have a huge advantage.
- 5:43Speaker 2: I like to think.
- 5:44Speaker 3: G know, do you get involved in analytics much? Do I? Yeah?
- 5:48Speaker 3: With your team.
- 5:51Speaker 2: I mean, I like to know what they are. I
- 5:54Speaker 2: like to know what the data says. Even in the
- 5:58Speaker 2: weight room, you know who I mean, there's charts and
- 6:01Speaker 2: graphs and all this stuff. Yeah, I want to know
- 6:04Speaker 2: what it is. But you know, we go by the constitution.
- 6:11Speaker 2: You know, one man, one vote. I'm the only man.
- 6:14Speaker 2: My vote counts.
- 6:19Speaker 1: What about stuff that you're running this year, is it
- 6:22Speaker 1: any different than last year based on the personnel that
- 6:25Speaker 1: you have, in the depth that you have.
- 6:27Speaker 2: M I don't know that anything's way different. I think
- 6:31Speaker 2: we have the ball in the middle of the floor
- 6:34Speaker 2: more with Sarah and Ice because I think they're pretty
- 6:41Speaker 2: good ball handlers. We added Asy, which is another good
- 6:48Speaker 2: ball handler and another good offensive player. Caitlyn chan is
- 6:53Speaker 2: another good ball handler and another you know, aggressive offensive player.
- 6:59Speaker 2: So the pieces are a little bit different. And we
- 7:03Speaker 2: haven't changed that much as to what the scheme is
- 7:07Speaker 2: the overall big picture, but there's been a slight adjustment
- 7:12Speaker 2: as to you know, where we want the ball to
- 7:15Speaker 2: go more times than not, let's put it that way,
- 7:20Speaker 2: and how we're gonna how we're going to be able
- 7:24Speaker 2: to play space the floor and take advantage of that.
- 7:30Speaker 2: You know, we have players that are pretty good with
- 7:32Speaker 2: the ball and can get to the basket, and so far,
- 7:36Speaker 2: so good.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Yeah, and the crazy thing is getting to the free
- 7:39Speaker 1: throw line is still a task, is what it's getting
- 7:43Speaker 1: to the free throw line. We talked about this on
- 7:45Speaker 1: the Coach on the Show last week about I mean,
- 7:47Speaker 1: you're only making seven free throws a game, and I
- 7:49Speaker 1: think maybe ten opportunities a game.
- 7:53Speaker 2: I know, you know, they're they're all doing these photo shoots,
- 7:58Speaker 2: you know, so they all got makeup on and nails
- 8:00Speaker 2: and lip gloss and all this other crap. So none
- 8:04Speaker 2: of them want to get hit, so they avoid contact
- 8:08Speaker 2: at all costs. As matter of fact, I think I
- 8:12Speaker 2: think some of them have it in their contract. I'm
- 8:14Speaker 2: not sweating. So yeah, we're we're not going to the
- 8:20Speaker 2: free throw line very much.
- 8:21Speaker 1: No, no, no, that's for sure. No, but the team
- 8:24Speaker 1: that you're playing Thursday does. And we'll preview the Notre
- 8:26Speaker 1: Dame game when we come back. You don't really. I'm
- 8:28Speaker 1: a head coach of the Huskies with this live at
- 8:30Speaker 1: the Duncan Music Lunch. If you're listening to the Women's
- 8:32Speaker 1: Basketball Coaches Show on their Fields,
