- 0:00Hey y'all, it's friendly. Happy Friday.
- 0:04We made it to the end of another week and I'm really looking
- 0:09forward to what we're diving into today.
- 0:12One of my specific prayers on my prayer walk this morning was
- 0:16just that the Lord would show me more of His heart through
- 0:20different attributes and characteristics in this passage.
- 0:24And so whenever I came to read the verses that He had me in for
- 0:28my quiet time, he definitely answered that prayer.
- 0:31And I'm really looking forward to just sharing with y'all what
- 0:35he taught me. So with that, we're going to be
- 0:38in First Thessalonians chapter 2, verses 7 through 12.
- 0:45Even though we could have imposed upon you our demands as
- 0:49apostles of Christ, instead we showed you kindness and we're
- 0:53gentle among you. We cared for you in the same way
- 0:57that a nursing mother cares for her own children.
- 1:00With a mother's love and affectionate attachment to you.
- 1:04We are very happy to share with you not only the gospel of God,
- 1:08but also our lives because you had become so dear to us.
- 1:13Beloved brothers and sisters, surely you remember how hard we
- 1:17labored among you. We worked night and day so that
- 1:21we would not become a burden to you while we preached the
- 1:23wonderful gospel of God with God as our witness.
- 1:28You saw how we lived among you in holiness, in godly
- 1:33relationships, and without fault.
- 1:37And you know how affectionately we treated each one of you like
- 1:41a loving Father cares for his own children.
- 1:44We comforted and encouraged you and challenged you to adopt A
- 1:49lifestyle worthy of God who invites you into his Kingdom and
- 1:53glory. OK, before we zoom in, something
- 1:58helpful to understand that I found fascinating was the
- 2:02difference between an apostle and a disciple.
- 2:05Because obviously we hear those terms a lot throughout
- 2:08Scripture, but there is a difference.
- 2:10So an apostle, they are specifically chosen and sent out
- 2:15with authority. They're commissioned to go out.
- 2:19And a disciple, they are a follower and a student of Jesus,
- 2:23someone who hears and listens and then follows.
- 2:27So all the apostles are disciples, but not every
- 2:31disciple is an apostle. As believers, as Christians, we
- 2:37are disciples of Jesus, but we're not necessarily apostles
- 2:41in the way that Paul was. And Paul knew that he had
- 2:45special authority. He could have really pressed
- 2:49into that title and emphasized his status, but he really
- 2:54didn't. He knew his identity, but it was
- 2:57not rooted in his position. It was rooted in being a
- 3:01follower of Jesus who had been commissioned and entrusted to
- 3:05share the truth specifically with the Gentiles or non Jews.
- 3:10He existed to lift the name of Jesus, not his own.
- 3:15And this is a common theme all throughout the Bible.
- 3:19But a leader in the Kingdom is ultimately A servant.
- 3:24So we see Paul describe himself among them like young children
- 3:29and he's implying gentleness here.
- 3:32And I think gentleness today can get a bad rap because it might
- 3:36appear weak or less than because we're so used to loud,
- 3:42dominating voices. But biblically, gentleness is
- 3:46one of the most powerful attributes and characteristics.
- 3:50I want us to think about John the Baptist for a second.
- 3:54We see in John 3:30 that he says he must become greater.
- 4:00I must become less. That's him saying, Gee, he wants
- 4:04more of Jesus and less of himself.
- 4:07And this is the same John who was the messenger preparing the
- 4:11way for Jesus in the wilderness. Yet he understood so clearly who
- 4:17was greater than him. He even said that he was
- 4:20unworthy of untying Jesus's sandals.
- 4:24Now that is humility. That is strength under control.
- 4:29And put simply, gentleness is love in action and it springs
- 4:35forth from humility. So practically in everyday life,
- 4:40gentleness can be seen as being a thoughtful person, being
- 4:44considerate. You're putting others needs
- 4:47above your own, being slow to anger like we see in Exodus 34,
- 4:52six through 7. God describes himself as a
- 4:55compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger and abounding in
- 5:00love. James 119 emphasizes to be quick
- 5:04to listen and we're to be eager to learn.
- 5:07So gentleness is not about trying to build your personal
- 5:11image, it's about building and exalting the image, above all
- 5:17Jesus Christ. So Paul then gives us this
- 5:21beautiful combination of what leading like Christ actually
- 5:26looks like. Paul says he was like a child
- 5:30when he came to Thessalonica. This implies dependency.
- 5:34He was vulnerable and he was approachable.
- 5:37And in Matthew 18, four, Jesus says that whoever humbles
- 5:41themselves like a child is greatest in the Kingdom.
- 5:46Paul also says that he was like a nursing mother.
- 5:50This shows his tender heart. He was nurturing and he was
- 5:54genuinely affectionate towards them.
- 5:57And Psalm 131, this is the passage that was really the
- 6:01inspiration for my podcast, but it paints that same picture of a
- 6:06quiet trust and closeness with the Lord and just picturing a
- 6:11mother with a tender heart. And then we see Paul also
- 6:15mention a father who is encouraging and comforting and
- 6:20urging them to live lives worthy of God in the calling that they
- 6:23have received. And Hebrews 12/6 reminds us that
- 6:27the Lord actually disciplines those he loves.
- 6:31So I believe there's something so significant about this entire
- 6:35combination. We see a mother's genuine
- 6:40connection and we see a father's protection, plus a childlike
- 6:44faith and vulnerability. This is communicating softness
- 6:49with strength and care with conviction.
- 6:53But it reflects our Heavenly Father so beautifully.
- 6:57And I'm personally so blessed and so thankful for loving,
- 7:02faithful parents. But I do just want to say,
- 7:05regardless of your background, where you come from, what your
- 7:10relationship with your earthly parents looks like, that never
- 7:14defines or limits your relationship with your Heavenly
- 7:17Father because he is perfect in tenderness and perfect in
- 7:23guidance. So another thing that stood out
- 7:26to me is how Paul went from being a total stranger to this
- 7:30church. Like he planted this church, it
- 7:33did not exist before and then it becomes a unified family.
- 7:38And honestly, in real time, like I've experienced that because
- 7:43there are friendships in my life now that I haven't even had for
- 7:47that long of a time, but because they're so rooted in the Lord,
- 7:53and we have prayed together through seasons and grown in our
- 7:57faith together. We've sharpened one another.
- 7:59We've had difficult conversations but called each
- 8:03other higher. I feel so deeply invested in
- 8:06their own walk with Jesus too. And there's something different
- 8:10about relationships rooted in Christ versus relationships that
- 8:14are only rooted in just history or convenience and years of
- 8:20knowing someone. And Paul even worked as a tent
- 8:24maker. He did this so that he wouldn't
- 8:27burden the Thessalonians financially or cause them to
- 8:32even question his motives for preaching.
- 8:35So yes, it's biblical to support church leaders, of course, but I
- 8:40think that this is showing Paul's heart because he did not
- 8:43want anything, absolutely anything to hinder people from
- 8:48receiving the gospel. That is how much it meant to
- 8:51him. And he lived in such a way that
- 8:53he could say, look at my life like, imitate me as I imitate
- 8:59Christ. This obviously was not because
- 9:02he was sinless. He was still human, but because
- 9:06he made it his aim to live above reproach and relied on the
- 9:11Spirit daily, he had this credibility.
- 9:15So I'm going to bring y'all a few questions that I was
- 9:18reflecting on and asking myself through this quiet time.
- 9:22Are you a living example of Christ for others through your
- 9:26active pursuit of holiness and godly relationships?
- 9:31With that, who are you spending the most time with?
- 9:34What is filling your free time? And if Jesus returned right now,
- 9:42today, is there anything in your life that would make you shrink
- 9:46back in embarrassment and think, oh, that would not make my
- 9:50Father proud? Are there sins in your life that
- 9:53you're justifying, or are you actually learning from those
- 9:58mistakes, repenting and turning away from them?
- 10:03Y'all a loving father. He would not want his child to
- 10:07walk into danger, especially knowing the fatal deathly
- 10:11results. And Deuteronomy 10/12 through 13
- 10:16reminds us that we are to fear the Lord, to serve Him with all
- 10:21of our heart, with all of our soul, to walk in obedience with
- 10:25Him, and to observe His commands and decrees that He gave through
- 10:29Moses. The 10 commandments, we are to
- 10:32observe those because they're for our own good.
- 10:36And y'all this is because God wants to protect us.
- 10:39He desires to give us good things, but it does take action
- 10:44on our part, choosing what He wants over what we want, even
- 10:49when it takes longer or the blessing is delayed.
- 10:53Maybe it looks different than what we originally planned in
- 10:56our head, but we also cling to the fact that His way will
- 11:01always be better than what we could ever imagine.
- 11:05So as we all head into the weekend, I just want to say, let
- 11:09us be encouraged and comforted and continue to urge one another
- 11:15to live for what truly matters. And may we let our gentleness
- 11:19and humility and love make people curious about the church
- 11:24and about Jesus because that is why we are here.
- 11:28So let's move into prayer right now.
- 11:32Father God, thank you for your gentle heart towards us.
- 11:38Thank you that you are so tender, but you're also so
- 11:43strong, and you nurture us and you discipline us because you
- 11:48love us. It's for our protection.
- 11:52So would you make us more humble and more gentle?
- 11:56Would you help us to care more about lifting your name than
- 11:59building our own name and title? Would you protect us from pride
- 12:05and guard us from hidden sin? Would you provide us with
- 12:11friendships that sharpen us and that refresh our souls and
- 12:17ultimately just align our desires with yours?
- 12:20As we delight in you, give us the desires of our heart that
- 12:25are your desires and Your will for us.
- 12:28Help us live lives that reflect you fully and just well.
- 12:35We love you and we praise Your name.
- 12:39We ask this all in your name, Jesus.
- 12:40Amen. OK, well I hope you'll have a
- 12:43wonderful start to your weekend, a great Friday and I will see
- 12:47y'all on the next pod.
