• 1:27
  Speaker 1: What is SEO?
• 1:29
Speaker 1: First, a quick refresher.
• 1:31
Speaker 1: Seo, or search engine optimization, is the strategy of optimizing signals both on your website and off of your website, to influence how it appears in search results online.
• 1:46
Speaker 1: When most people think of SEO, they immediately tend to think of traditional SEO.
• 1:54
Speaker 1: This works great if you're targeting a global or national audience or you don't really have a physical location tied to your business.
• 2:03
Speaker 1: But here's where things get interesting.
• 2:06
Speaker 1: Google doesn't have just one algorithm.
• 2:09
Speaker 1: It actually has multiple algorithms tailored to different kinds of searches.
• 2:17
Speaker 1: When a user enters a search query, google works to understand the intent behind the query, the query being what.
• 2:27
Speaker 1: They either type into Google or speak into Google.
• 2:30
Speaker 1: Asking, for example, is someone looking for information, an online product or a nearby service?
• 2:38
Speaker 1: If Google determines the search has local intent, it then switches to its local algorithm to deliver results that are relevant to a specific geographical area.
• 2:55
Speaker 1: Local intent means that the person searching is likely looking for something near them, whether that's a restaurant, a plumber, a chiropractor or another service.
• 3:09
Speaker 1: And here's the kicker Local intent does not always require a geographical modifier in the search.
• 3:20
  Speaker 1: Let me explain.
• 3:22
Speaker 1: Let's use an example.
• 3:24
Speaker 1: If you type pizza delivery into Google from your office, you will see a list of pizza places near your office.
• 3:33
Speaker 1: Now, if you're at home and you type pizza delivery from your home address, you'll see a completely different list of results, even though you entered the same exact query or search term.
• 3:49
  Speaker 1: That's Google's algorithm at work.
• 3:52
Speaker 1: It knows you're searching for a pizza place closer to your current location without you needing to add that near me or city name or zip code in your query.
• 4:05
Speaker 1: So how do you know if your business really needs local SEO If you see the map pack, the little map with three businesses located underneath it and the search results for your targeted keyword.
• 4:20
Speaker 1: Google is usually using local algorithms for that query.
• 4:24
Speaker 1: This is extremely important for businesses like chiropractors, massage therapists, acupuncturists, physical therapists, clinic owners of all sorts restaurants, coffee shops, retail stores, home service providers like electricians, plumbers and more.
• 4:44
Speaker 1: Essentially, if you do a face-to-face business at a physical location or serve customers in a specific geographical area, then you absolutely need local SEO.
• 5:00
Speaker 1: And my guess is, if you're listening today, you fall in that category when the local algorithm applies.
• 5:08
Speaker 1: Now, local SEO isn't just about showing up in the map pack.
• 5:13
Speaker 1: The local algorithm influences several areas of search results the map pack this is the most obvious place where the local algorithm is at work.
• 5:25
Speaker 1: The local finder when you click the view all at the bottom of that map pack, you'll see an expanded list of local businesses.
• 5:35
Speaker 1: You have Google Maps.
• 5:38
Speaker 1: The search results in Maps app are entirely powered by the local algorithm and localized organic results.
• 5:48
Speaker 1: Even the regular organic search results below the map pack are often localized for queries with intent.
• 5:58
Speaker 1: It's important to note that the radius for a local search results can vary a lot.
• 6:04
Speaker 1: If you're in a highly competitive area, the search results might be smaller.
• 6:09
Speaker 1: For example, a big city like New York, someone searching for a chiropractor might only see options within a couple of miles, but in a rural area, the search radius could extend much, much further.
