Charleston County’s overdose crisis is hitting hard this summer, with 39 overdoses and 7 deaths in July alone — a grim pattern that worsens with warmer weather. Though drug-related deaths dropped 19% from last year (153 total), the epidemic remains deadly, especially as fentanyl lurks in unexpected places and can kill even in tiny doses. Older adults are increasingly affected, and organizations like Wake Up Carolina are distributing free Narcan kits and training to combat this.
