- 0:23chickens. Hey everybody.
- 0:28Good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30So, today I want to talk to you about being okay, with starting
- 0:36something off and being new at it and not being great at it.
- 0:39You know, we love to talk to our children about this and we
- 0:41always tell them hey, you know what you, of course, you don't
- 0:44know it, you have to learn it, blah, blah, blah.
- 0:46But what I find with adults is very interesting because we
- 0:49don't always do well, when we have to learn new things and we
- 0:53get very uncomfortable with learning new things and we could
- 0:55grumpy about it and we beat ourselves up.
- 1:00Now whether this A new thing for work.
- 1:01Like, let's say, you have to learn new software, or you have
- 1:04to learn a new skill like podcasting.
- 1:07I had nothing. No skill in the beginning of
- 1:10understanding, what it took to do podcasting, how to do the
- 1:13technicalities of it, and all of that.
- 1:15And I had to figure it out. And then, of course, me being
- 1:17me, I simplified at all because I didn't want it to be complex.
- 1:20But the thing that I can tell you about it is when you first
- 1:24go into it, we always have hesitation, we always have these
- 1:28waves of hesitation we as human beings because we don't like to
- 1:33necessarily jump in and say, oh my gosh, I know nothing about
- 1:37this, I'm so excited to learn it.
- 1:40We kind of go into it with. I want the end result but I
- 1:43don't necessarily want the process and that's where we get
- 1:47hung up. We can't want an outcome and not
- 1:51want the effort, it takes to get the outcome.
- 1:53And that is a really big thing here.
- 1:55What I just said the and I've talked about that specific
- 1:58subject before The psychological standpoint.
- 2:02But this is actually saying, I want to learn new things.
- 2:05Now, why are we talking about the learning new part of it?
- 2:07Well, because at the end of the year and as you start to think
- 2:11about how your year went or how you want your next year to go,
- 2:15it's always a great thing to say, well you know what,
- 2:18something new that I want to learn about what something new
- 2:21that I want to incorporate into my life.
- 2:23So for me, I'll tell you one. That's blank big on my list for
- 2:27next year. Really, really excited to do.
- 2:30Ooh, two things as far as my farming and growing things go.
- 2:34I really want to learn to make fermented items which I've never
- 2:39made fermented items. Before meaning, I could make
- 2:42kimchi or I could make kombucha or I could do any of those
- 2:45things. But fermented items in general
- 2:47and I really want to learn to do bread from scratch and I've
- 2:50never done bread from scratch. It has always been one of those
- 2:54things that like scared the hell out of me.
- 2:57And I always when I grew up at a time when those bread makers The
- 3:01bread maker that everyone had on their counter at one point in
- 3:04time had and you pour the mix in and you know the bread maker did
- 3:08the whole thing but I don't I I never ever remember my mother
- 3:13doing anything like that. She was not the best cook but we
- 3:16had the bread maker and I and she'd say oh making bread from
- 3:20scratch, is too hard. That's why we have the machine.
- 3:23So I grew up being told something was really too hard to
- 3:26do and that I shouldn't necessarily Endeavor into it but
- 3:30now Now, I see people all over the place online doing their
- 3:33sourdough Breads, and all their other birds and it excites me
- 3:36and I want to learn how to do it.
- 3:37So I've done canning before with my auntie Annie, who I
- 3:41absolutely adore and love that process.
- 3:44And she taught me all about canning so that I feel very
- 3:48confident in. But this other stuff is
- 3:51something that I really want to learn and that's going on my
- 3:53list. And the point of bringing this
- 3:56up today is what are the things that you want to learn.
- 4:00And what are the things that you're going to stop resisting
- 4:04learning? Like, you know, my husband is
- 4:07somebody. That is so talented at so many
- 4:10things and I look at it and I say, geez, he can whip out
- 4:13scientific names, like nobody's business and I'm a little
- 4:16jealous of the fact that he can do that and remember anything,
- 4:19all the scientific names of our plants and all the scientific
- 4:22names of animals, he's just a Science Guy.
- 4:25Now that's a skill. I don't possess but I really
- 4:27don't necessarily want it. I'm like yeah, I would Love it,
- 4:31but I'm not willing to put the effort in, but this other stuff,
- 4:33I'm willing to put the effort in.
- 4:35So what's something new that you want to learn?
- 4:37And you want to take it into your new year and say, hey this
- 4:41is something I really want to do and I'm willing to be
- 4:44uncomfortable. I'm willing to say, I don't know
- 4:46how I'm willing for the failure. Like my friends, I'm willing for
- 4:49the bread failure. Seriously, totally willing for
- 4:52it. So I'm like okay I know I'm
- 4:54going to have to put in a lot of effort.
- 4:55I know it's not going to work right away and I know I'm going
- 4:57to have to work hard at it. So think about that.
- 5:00Start to ask yourself, what, where were?
- 5:03You know, what things can I learn?
- 5:05What are the stuff that I love to learn?
- 5:06What am I afraid of letting go of.
- 5:09And, you know what, here's the great part.
- 5:12Let go of the fear, you know? Just stop wave man.
- 5:15Who cares? Like, I'm who cares.
- 5:16If I fail at bread? It's just like doing anything
- 5:19creative. I don't care if it fails.
- 5:22It's okay. It's totally okay.
- 5:24I made a wreath. The other night, I don't think
- 5:26it was the best one I've ever made, but you know what I was
- 5:30expecting. Excited.
- 5:30I made it out of okra that I grew and dried and I was like,
- 5:33okay this is not so bad. So in fact I should probably
- 5:37post that up on Facebook so everybody can see it and know is
- 5:41it, is it done? No, it's always a work in
- 5:43progress for me, but that's okay.
- 5:45So I'm going to challenge you to think about that.
- 5:47You know, what's the new thing you want to learn and welcome
- 5:51the discomfort of learning it? All right, my friends.
- 5:54I hope you have a wonderful day and I will see you all tomorrow.
- 5:58Bye. Excited.
