Speaker 1: The early HR visit is always a bad sign. She
0:03
Speaker 1: admitted that she forgot to disclose that she suffered from vertigo.
0:09
Speaker 2: That's crazy.
0:10
Speaker 3: He had essentially terminated himself the attendants. I generally had
0:13
Speaker 3: to mute the phone call because I was laughing out loud.
0:16
Speaker 1: At no way. This is the Bad Hire, the show
0:20
Speaker 1: with the best stories about the worst employees.
0:24
Speaker 3: We fired him.
0:24
Speaker 1: Of course, people are crazy. It's like an HR nightmare rife.
0:28
Speaker 2: One bad hire stole all of it crazy stuff. She
0:32
Speaker 2: got what she deserved.
0:34
Speaker 1: Oh, I'm your host, Ken Monroe, and every week we
0:37
Speaker 1: dive into real life stories from the wild world of
0:41
Speaker 1: work and what can happen when the wrong person gets
0:45
Speaker 1: the job. These stories aren't just crazy when their cautionary
0:49
Speaker 1: tales about lessons learned the hard way. Let's get started. Hey, everyone,
0:55
Speaker 1: welcome to The Bad Hire, the show with the best
0:58
Speaker 1: stories about the worst hires and maybe employees. So we're
1:05
Speaker 1: maybe maybe they make it to employees, so.
1:08
Speaker 3: We're sometimes sometimes the.
1:09
Speaker 1: First cool stories today And I hear that this entire
1:12
Speaker 1: show is all submission stories. It is, Yes, so that's fun,
1:16
Speaker 1: so which means all that traction marketing. But we're back
1:20
Speaker 1: again with Emma and Morgan welcome.
1:22
Speaker 2: Hey guys, sy you guys.
1:24
Speaker 1: You had some good stories last time.
1:26
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, for sure.
1:28
Speaker 2: Yeah, some of them were sad though.
1:29
Speaker 1: I was like, yea, some of the weird one with
1:32
Speaker 1: the ghost story, it was kind of that was.
1:34
Speaker 4: The ghost one, and then the girl running the house
1:36
Speaker 4: sound that one was my one. Yeah one, I think
1:41
Speaker 4: that was my favorite last episode as well.
1:44
Speaker 1: But as a responsible one in the room, the ones
1:48
Speaker 1: submitted by the professional had great insight on hiring.
1:51
Speaker 2: That was that was really good one too.
1:54
Speaker 3: Probably would have guessed that that one would have.
1:56
Speaker 1: Yeah, but hey, listen, don't forget we're running that ten
1:59
Speaker 1: thousand dollars time test. Send us your best bad hire
2:02
Speaker 1: story at thebadhire dot Com. The funniest, craziest, most outrageous story.
2:07
Speaker 1: Here's here's the deal, right, We know everyone's got a story.
2:12
Speaker 1: You got a story about a bad interview, a bad hire,
2:15
Speaker 1: someone flaming out early late who knows when. But we
2:20
Speaker 1: know that you have a story, right, and we love
2:23
Speaker 1: to hear your stories. We all love to listen to
2:26
Speaker 1: your story, So submit it to us. You can reach
2:30
Speaker 1: out to us and ask to be on a segment.
2:33
Speaker 1: We'll set up an interview you for the show. Play
2:36
Speaker 1: a clip of your interview right here on the show
2:38
Speaker 1: you begin to see more and more of that. Or
2:40
Speaker 1: you can submit it in writing. You can stay anonymous,
2:42
Speaker 1: or you can reveal yourself whatever you want to do. Well,
2:44
Speaker 1: just want to be easy to work with to get
2:46
Speaker 1: your story on the show. And so after really months
2:51
Speaker 1: of just consistently trying to promote the show, being here
2:55
Speaker 1: doing it, finding the stories ourselves, you know, we finally
2:59
Speaker 1: got a pipeline on a sixty some guests you told
3:02
Speaker 1: us in the last show, uh, you know, stacked up
3:04
Speaker 1: that continues to grow and we've got submissions coming in
3:09
Speaker 1: all the time now, and so that's really cool. So
3:11
Speaker 1: an entire I think this is the first time as
3:14
Speaker 1: show show twenty. It took twenty episodes for us to
3:18
Speaker 1: get a a show completely done by content from other people,
3:25
Speaker 1: content for people out.
3:26
Speaker 2: Yeah, so that's cool, that's awesome. I think that's great and.
3:29
Speaker 1: You guys love it because there's no more scouring the internet.
3:34
Speaker 3: Coffee and paste onto the stof.
3:35
Speaker 4: I should have like put my I should have put
3:37
Speaker 4: read it on my computer so then like everybody could
3:39
Speaker 4: see how many hours were spent on Reddit a day.
3:41
Speaker 2: Right, Yeah, I did a lot of time.
3:43
Speaker 1: Trying to find story and then you got it's just uh,
3:47
Speaker 1: you know, it's a it's a little bit of a
3:49
Speaker 1: testament to just not quitting and sticking to it. Right,
3:53
Speaker 1: it's just you know, figuring out a way to make
3:56
Speaker 1: it happen. You shoot twenty of these. You got a
3:59
Speaker 1: lot of hours into twenty episodes trying to build.
4:02
Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean looking at Reddit for crazy stories is
4:05
Speaker 4: always entertaining. So it wasn't like it wasn't fun for us. Yeah,
4:10
Speaker 4: all right, dang it, I gotta go on Reddit read
4:13
Speaker 4: these crazy people stories again.
4:15
Speaker 1: So let me let me get let me get started.
4:18
Speaker 1: The story you know submitted. So we hired an accounting
4:22
Speaker 1: person who came highly recommended through a recruiter and references.
4:28
Speaker 1: After two weeks of full daily training, she stepped into
4:31
Speaker 1: HR and said she needed to talk. Okay, the early
4:36
Speaker 1: HR visit is always a bad sign. She admitted that
4:39
Speaker 1: she forgot to disclose that she suffered from vertigo and
4:45
Speaker 1: may need to stay at home when she would have
4:47
Speaker 1: an onset. Normally, this is something I would be concerned
4:51
Speaker 1: about and understand. But a red flag went up right
4:53
Speaker 1: away because of the way she introduced the conversation. After
4:59
Speaker 1: she left, told the head of HR, I guarantee you
5:02
Speaker 1: she will start taking off more and more time. I
5:06
Speaker 1: think that was just her setting the stage for needing
5:10
Speaker 1: to take some sick days. Sure enough, each week after
5:14
Speaker 1: that she was off a day or two here there,
5:17
Speaker 1: she hadn't even accrue enough PTO to cover the time off.
5:21
Speaker 1: Over the next month or so, her time off got
5:23
Speaker 1: longer and longer. Her work was suffering, and the other
5:27
Speaker 1: members of the team felt she wasn't there enough to
5:29
Speaker 1: continue giving the training for the department that was needed.
5:34
Speaker 1: The head of HR called her at her home to
5:36
Speaker 1: check on her and said, hey, since she had been
5:39
Speaker 1: out too much more than three days in a row,
5:41
Speaker 1: we would need her to bring in a doctor's note.
5:44
Speaker 1: She never showed up again and didn't call when she
5:48
Speaker 1: was sick. When we finally did hear from her, she
5:50
Speaker 1: said she was in the hospital. As it turns out,
5:54
Speaker 1: that same evening, I was headed to a tributa game
5:56
Speaker 1: to a trivia game night, and at a stoplight I
5:59
Speaker 1: happened to glance in my rearview Mirra I took a
6:02
Speaker 1: double take and realized she was driving the suv directly
6:05
Speaker 1: behind me. Oh no, she was laughing and carrying on
6:09
Speaker 1: with her preteen son, who was in the passenger seat
6:13
Speaker 1: as we drove away. I knew it was her because
6:16
Speaker 1: the front of the vehicle is personalized nameplate with her
6:19
Speaker 1: unique first name. When I arrived at Trivia, my friend said,
6:24
Speaker 1: you look ticked off, and what's going on. I told
6:26
Speaker 1: her about the situation and the stoplight incident, and when
6:29
Speaker 1: I mentioned the coworker's unique first name, she said, what,
6:33
Speaker 1: Oh no, this is going you kidding me. Wait a minute.
6:38
Speaker 1: I had my nails done today at my salon and
6:40
Speaker 1: the woman next to me had a tattoo on her
6:42
Speaker 1: chest with that same name, and the nail tech and
6:46
Speaker 1: the nail tack called her by that name. Busted, needless
6:51
Speaker 1: to say. After letting my boss in on this, the
6:54
Speaker 1: head of HR contacted her the next day to say,
6:56
Speaker 1: if you don't get your doctor's note by the end
6:58
Speaker 1: of today, we will need to start termination paperwork. Later
7:01
Speaker 1: the following day, we still had not heard from her,
7:04
Speaker 1: but we saw on our office cameras that she slipped
7:07
Speaker 1: in after hours and left her laptop and badge on
7:10
Speaker 1: her in her top dress drawer. A desk drawer. We
7:13
Speaker 1: overnighted the termination paperwork. That's a quiet resignation. Yeah, that's
7:20
Speaker 1: my only story for today.
7:21
Speaker 2: That's crazy.
7:22
Speaker 3: I'm like, y'all love your name that much across that's
7:26
Speaker 3: so funny.
7:27
Speaker 1: I just read the next line, that's my only story today,
7:29
Speaker 1: like it was a part of her story.
7:30
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, She's like.
7:34
Speaker 1: I got like, that's my only story today, Morgan, what
7:36
Speaker 1: have you guys?
7:37
Speaker 3: After doing that, after doing this for so long, it's
7:39
Speaker 3: crazy to see the excuses that people come up. We're
7:44
Speaker 3: trying to get like days off.
7:46
Speaker 1: Hr pros are warriors, man HR pros are managers, are
7:49
Speaker 1: warriors just from putting up with this stuff.
7:52
Speaker 2: She told them that though I thought this.
7:54
Speaker 1: Was headed down.
7:55
Speaker 3: She had two jobs, did too, real story.
8:00
Speaker 2: She was living her best life getting paid from the
8:02
Speaker 2: one jobs.
8:03
Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, she's she's out getting her nails done.
8:07
Speaker 3: One of the odds that she was sitting right next
8:09
Speaker 3: to her at the nails, Yeah, that one of the
8:17
Speaker 3: odds that she's right behind the other person in the
8:20
Speaker 3: car too.
8:21
Speaker 1: It was it was, it was bad, Karl crazy. She
8:25
Speaker 1: just no, oh my gosh, all right, good story though, Yeah,
8:32
Speaker 1: I think I think when a lot of people hear
8:34
Speaker 1: that story or story stories like that, it just resonates
8:37
Speaker 1: with them because they all got that lady in their life.
8:40
Speaker 1: They've all had that person. Yeah who showed up. You know.
8:43
Speaker 1: I had somebody working for me one time, and she
8:48
Speaker 1: was just you know, uh, she needed all these flex
8:50
Speaker 1: time hours, you know. And she's like, well, I got
8:52
Speaker 1: to leave a three to go get my son, and
8:54
Speaker 1: then I got to do this, and and and and
8:57
Speaker 1: she said, but there's no pride. I come in after
8:59
Speaker 1: I get back, I give them in. Then I worked
9:01
Speaker 1: for a couple of hours. Yeah, okay, So she's rolling
9:04
Speaker 1: in late because she has to handle something with her son,
9:07
Speaker 1: and and then then she leaves every day at two
9:11
Speaker 1: thirty three, and she's like, hey, I'm making the time up,
9:14
Speaker 1: and you know, our systems keep up with all that.
9:16
Speaker 1: And eventually, you know, you look and you're because something's
9:19
Speaker 1: not right, work's not getting done. You just you know,
9:21
Speaker 1: you're looking for the results of the of the roles
9:23
Speaker 1: not happening, so you have to start looking closer, which
9:26
Speaker 1: is I hate doing that. Yeah, and then she she
9:31
Speaker 1: leaves every day at two thirty. She never signs back on,
9:33
Speaker 1: never does anything on the computer. Just every day and then.
9:36
Speaker 1: But what was crazy is the number of times she
9:38
Speaker 1: was saying, oh my gosh, I worked so late last night.
9:42
Speaker 1: It was just terrible. I just worked it late. I
9:43
Speaker 1: just hardly got to sleep because I worked so late.
9:45
Speaker 1: You know. So she began to build these stories how
9:48
Speaker 1: hard she's working after hours, not knowing we could see
9:53
Speaker 1: that she wasn't logging in at all. Yeah, and you know,
9:58
Speaker 1: or you know, do the quick email log in where
10:00
Speaker 1: you like log in at nine o'clock, smin the.
10:03
Speaker 2: Two emails for a little bit.
10:05
Speaker 1: Yeah, so it was but that's uh, it's I guess
10:09
Speaker 1: that's part of part of allowing hybrid or homework now
10:13
Speaker 1: today is it's very very difficult situation in terms of
10:17
Speaker 1: keeping up a poke with folks. One day, we'll have
10:19
Speaker 1: to do a whole, a whole show on like work
10:23
Speaker 1: from home. Yeah, you know, work from home complete blow ups.
10:26
Speaker 2: That would be cool.
10:27
Speaker 3: Yeah, we need a separate segment on that. Yeah, this
10:31
Speaker 3: is the work from home segment of our show.
10:33
Speaker 1: Yeah, where everyone everyone who worked from home fight's like
10:36
Speaker 1: crazy that it's the greatest thing for the most productive yeah. Ever. Yeah,
10:41
Speaker 1: and the reality is people just got horror story after
10:44
Speaker 1: horror story. He's just getting abused by people who work
10:48
Speaker 1: from home. So I'm not saying it doesn't happen and
10:50
Speaker 1: they can't be good for some people, but companies absolutely,
10:55
Speaker 1: My experience with it hasn't been super awesome. Yeah, So

Speaker 1: ex dot io. All right, here we go the story.
11:44
Speaker 2: This story was submitted, Yes, so I'll let you go.
11:47
Speaker 4: Story was submitted by Patrick Johnson, and he's the director
11:50
Speaker 4: of client support at E Show. So thank you Patrick
11:52
Speaker 4: for submitting your story.
11:54
Speaker 2: He said.
11:54
Speaker 4: In May of twenty twenty four, I was tasked with
11:57
Speaker 4: implementing a new tier one support department for our software company.
12:01
Speaker 4: This was a seed of our pants type decision. I've
12:04
Speaker 4: never heard that expression before. We knew we needed this
12:07
Speaker 4: support level, but no time was provided to properly develop
12:10
Speaker 4: the needs of the team and scope out their work.
12:12
Speaker 4: My VP of technology had an offshore agency in discussions
12:15
Speaker 4: already for coding type resources.
12:18
Speaker 2: They advise a provided.
12:19
Speaker 4: Resources to do simple work, so we took a shot
12:21
Speaker 4: at it. Something that was a vultan vult volunteered type decision.
12:27
Speaker 2: Never heard that either volunteered. Is that it volunteered? Yeah?
12:32
Speaker 2: Is that? I've never heard that.
12:34
Speaker 1: I don't know.
12:34
Speaker 3: I don't know if the connection were, but I've definitely
12:37
Speaker 3: used it before.
12:38
Speaker 2: Definitely looking that up.
12:39
Speaker 4: After this, the agency sets up a zoom to meet
12:42
Speaker 4: a few available candidates.
12:43
Speaker 2: Lo and behold.
12:44
Speaker 4: About ten gentlemen pour into the call, all packed behind
12:47
Speaker 4: one screen, with what I believe was an old supervisory
12:50
Speaker 4: type at the front conducting. Knowing how many people I
12:54
Speaker 4: was going to meet, I immediately had to shorten my
12:56
Speaker 4: questions down to two to three. They rotated through awkward
12:59
Speaker 4: carousels with their names. The language barrier came. We were
13:02
Speaker 4: already overcoming technology issues on their end microphone issues, which
13:06
Speaker 4: was delaying the meeting about ten minutes, and by the
13:09
Speaker 4: time we began conversing, I was hearing word soup. They
13:12
Speaker 4: would have to translate for most of the candidates. I
13:15
Speaker 4: was able to little down to the large group about
13:17
Speaker 4: four with one question, essentially taking anyone out with could
13:22
Speaker 4: understand me. Period or two had absolutely no answer to
13:25
Speaker 4: my question, which was tell.
13:26
Speaker 2: Me about yourself.
13:27
Speaker 4: This stock which yeah, it should be home run for
13:31
Speaker 4: anyone language barrier was absolutely rough for everyone. We walked
13:35
Speaker 4: away with two resources hired, but we were told immediately
13:39
Speaker 4: two additional supervisors would also be required to attend training
13:42
Speaker 4: and have platform access. The supervisors were mostly leeches on
13:46
Speaker 4: the trainings. I would bet money at least one of
13:48
Speaker 4: them slept for a portion from what I was told.
13:51
Speaker 4: The relationship with the agency lasted about six months, but
13:54
Speaker 4: I learned a lot about what not to do from
13:56
Speaker 4: that experience. Most importantly, never hold an interview where you
13:59
Speaker 4: can give yourself the same baseline you would give any
14:02
Speaker 4: other candidate. The buckshot approach felt grimy, and in the
14:04
Speaker 4: end it absolutely was. Had we taken a more traditional route,
14:08
Speaker 4: potentially we would have identified candidates that were true fits
14:11
Speaker 4: rather than making gut check decisions because the leadership needed resources.
14:14
Speaker 4: Moving since then, we've moved into strictly independent hiring and
14:18
Speaker 4: yielding tons more success outside.
14:20
Speaker 2: Of typical US hires.
14:22
Speaker 4: That's an agency bad higher kind of yea, more than
14:25
Speaker 4: a single one.
14:25
Speaker 1: That's a way interesting story. You know.
14:28
Speaker 4: They also think about all the people lining up to
14:31
Speaker 4: like interview, how weird that would feel if you were
14:33
Speaker 4: in that situation where you're like on a zoom call
14:35
Speaker 4: with like ten of your other coworkers and like, I
14:37
Speaker 4: hope I get shod.
14:38
Speaker 1: Yeah, for the control like differences there where they think
14:43
Speaker 1: that's okay, we're just kind of rolling through and yes,
14:46
Speaker 1: and you know, great here at the end he's you know,
14:49
Speaker 1: he's like, hey, I learned a lot in this process.
14:52
Speaker 1: And you know, I've had some experience like this of
14:57
Speaker 1: trying to hire workers that aren't in the United States,
15:02
Speaker 1: and it's it's, uh, it's challenging to get right. And
15:07
Speaker 1: you know, you cannot treat them like just a third
15:12
Speaker 1: world disposable employees that are cheap. And so when you
15:16
Speaker 1: know the whole idea of trying to do a group
15:19
Speaker 1: interview is starting in the wrong frame of mind that
15:22
Speaker 1: not everyone deserves their individual time to talk to you.
15:25
Speaker 1: You're trying to hire fast, and you know, there's this
15:28
Speaker 1: a little bit of this currency that comes with that
15:30
Speaker 1: of like yeah, yeah, this is not the same. And
15:35
Speaker 1: I think he in the end he comes to the
15:37
Speaker 1: same conclusion that we need to apply the same processes,
15:41
Speaker 1: have the same kind of standards, and if you do,
15:44
Speaker 1: you can find great talent anywhere in the world.
15:47
Speaker 4: I also think interviews alone are nerve wracking, and then
15:50
Speaker 4: if you have a language barrier, you're even more worried
15:52
Speaker 4: about what you're going to say. And then imagine like
15:54
Speaker 4: you're worried about in your English with also like your
15:58
Speaker 4: co workers around you, like who also can have a
16:01
Speaker 4: language barrier to I don't know if he saw.
16:03
Speaker 1: The supervisors as a net negative, which I was surprised at,
16:07
Speaker 1: which means he was using some type of agency wherever
16:10
Speaker 1: he was doing, they were bringing in people for him.
16:12
Speaker 1: And then and the way those companies typically work that
16:17
Speaker 1: you know, their partnership companies, is they do you get
16:19
Speaker 1: the employee, but a part of the employee cost includes supervision.
16:25
Speaker 1: And you know, in this case it was a net negative,
16:29
Speaker 1: and other cases I've seen it is a super big
16:31
Speaker 1: positive Yeah, you know, and so you just I think
16:34
Speaker 1: the two lessons here treat everyone like an individual, you know,
16:39
Speaker 1: at the same standards, higher with as much meaningful approach
16:46
Speaker 1: in that space. But also find the right partner for sure. Yeah. Awesome,
16:52
Speaker 1: great story. Loved it all right.
16:53
Speaker 4: My next story is also a submitted story, and it's
16:55
Speaker 4: titled free Money. Unfortunately, I was laid off in February
16:59
Speaker 4: twenty twenty, around the time when COVID was hitting and
17:01
Speaker 4: being spread. I was laid off on a Monday morning,
17:04
Speaker 4: February seventeenth. I have a very strong technical skill set,
17:07
Speaker 4: so I wasn't too worried about finding a new job.
17:09
Speaker 4: Little did I know I would find a new job
17:11
Speaker 4: the same day via a recruiter. I interviewed and was
17:14
Speaker 4: hired the same day by a company who had lost
17:16
Speaker 4: a long term employee and needed to fill this position
17:19
Speaker 4: asap with the uncertainty of COVID. I started two weeks later,
17:23
Speaker 4: and after a couple of days in the job, the
17:25
Speaker 4: company sent everyone home due to COVID nineteen. I'd spent
17:28
Speaker 4: one day at the job completing paperwork and rolling in benefits, etc.
17:32
Speaker 4: And another day sitting with someone trying to learn my
17:35
Speaker 4: role before everyone was sent home. I was provided with
17:38
Speaker 4: a laptop and a ton of documentation to start looking at,
17:40
Speaker 4: but that's about it. The role I was in was
17:42
Speaker 4: very technical but required a great deal of hands on
17:45
Speaker 4: and live training. I was not given any task for
17:48
Speaker 4: the first six months and only was required to attend
17:51
Speaker 4: a few meetings here and there when I couldn't add
17:53
Speaker 4: any value whatsoever. Around July August of twenty twenty one,
17:57
Speaker 4: like between there, they started slowly bring us back into
18:00
Speaker 4: the office, but only for a day or two a week,
18:02
Speaker 4: and the only guy who had the ability to train
18:05
Speaker 4: me was unable to come into the office due to
18:07
Speaker 4: some illness.
18:07
Speaker 1: Old Fronts February twenty twenty Yes, July twenty twenty one,
18:12
Speaker 1: So it's a year and a half later when they
18:14
Speaker 1: start bringing people back.
18:15
Speaker 2: It sounds yeah, sounds like it.
18:17
Speaker 4: So the only person who could train her was this
18:20
Speaker 4: guy who's unable to come into the office due to
18:22
Speaker 4: illnesses with his children, and they had to they were
18:25
Speaker 4: like high risk. So literally two years on payroll salary
18:28
Speaker 4: around one hundred and fifty k and nothing being asked
18:31
Speaker 4: of me. Many people would jump at such an opportunity,
18:34
Speaker 4: but it was driving me crazy. After twenty six months,
18:37
Speaker 4: I decided that I'd had enough and left the company
18:39
Speaker 4: to pursue another interest. I am a hard worker, but
18:42
Speaker 4: it didn't feel right sitting on the bench and not
18:44
Speaker 4: being able to contribute.
18:46
Speaker 3: Wow.
18:46
Speaker 1: Wow, I don't know that. It's not really feels like
18:51
Speaker 1: a really good higher story. Yeah, I mean they're like bad.
18:54
Speaker 1: That's like a bad higher story in reverse, right, fifty
18:57
Speaker 1: K salary. We hired somebody I was talking.
18:59
Speaker 3: About they were so hard working and like they literally
19:02
Speaker 3: felt bad that they were being paid so much not
19:04
Speaker 3: even doing anything right.
19:05
Speaker 1: The bad hire was the fact that you hired someone
19:08
Speaker 1: and then just set them there and didn't do anything
19:11
Speaker 1: with them.
19:11
Speaker 2: Yeah, you know.
19:13
Speaker 1: Wow, And and the person themselves turns out to be
19:16
Speaker 1: a great hire. I mean, they're just like I wanted
19:19
Speaker 1: and frustrated that. There's a lot of people that would
19:22
Speaker 1: have There's a lot of people would have gone out
19:24
Speaker 1: and decided to apply for another job and keep that one. Yeah,
19:27
Speaker 1: they're not going to ask anything of me. I'm gonna
19:28
Speaker 1: take their paycheck and going to go get another job
19:31
Speaker 1: and work for them.
19:32
Speaker 2: For sure.
19:32
Speaker 1: Yeah, that happens all the time. There was there was
19:35
Speaker 1: a company. I want to make sure I remember reading
19:39
Speaker 1: the story back in back, you know, post COVID, right
19:42
Speaker 1: after COVID, and it was a company that that verifies
19:47
Speaker 1: where people work, right, And they decided to verify their
19:51
Speaker 1: own employees where they worked and discovered that there was
19:56
Speaker 1: not an insignificant percentage of them who were currently employed
19:59
Speaker 1: some where else while working for them.
20:02
Speaker 2: Wow, that's crazy.
20:05
Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it's I don't know, goody good story
20:08
Speaker 1: about it.
20:09
Speaker 3: They should get away with. Yeah, it's crazy what some
20:12
Speaker 3: people think I can get away it's nuts.
20:13
Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know how people would juggle the two
20:16
Speaker 4: tasks without like, I mean, feeling like a chicken with
20:20
Speaker 4: his head cut off. I'd be like, oh my gosh,
20:21
Speaker 4: that's a lot. Or they just start failing at the
20:25
Speaker 4: other job.
20:25
Speaker 1: Will justify it, right, They tell themselves they're doing a
20:30
Speaker 1: good job for for both and then they're both getting value.
20:35
Speaker 1: But that's that's that's not true. The person who hired
20:39
Speaker 1: you expected to hire your you know, the first person
20:41
Speaker 1: who hired you want to work for They expected to
20:44
Speaker 1: get your full energy and thought and heart of you know. Yeah,
20:48
Speaker 1: I mean that's what you're trying to get and not
20:51
Speaker 1: you know.
20:51
Speaker 3: And yeah, and also with that that particular story being
20:55
Speaker 3: like the very beginning of COVID, where people they probably
20:59
Speaker 3: weren't used to having people work remotely, and so they
21:03
Speaker 3: you know, some people just didn't know how to handle
21:06
Speaker 3: having that many people working at home, how to hand
21:09
Speaker 3: because oh it.
21:10
Speaker 1: Was a great Yeah, that's when you were reading that story.
21:12
Speaker 1: There was a couple of dates that that stuck out
21:15
Speaker 1: as like, I are just these are days like in
21:17
Speaker 1: my brain. Yeah, yeah, February seventeenth, twenty twenty. I mean
21:21
Speaker 1: it was a day that like the world was like yeah,
21:24
Speaker 1: and then two days later.
21:25
Speaker 2: Schools didn't go back.
21:26
Speaker 1: Yeah, February February seventeenth, you know.
21:29
Speaker 3: And it's crazy when you look at it now of
21:30
Speaker 3: how how people have evolved their process.
21:34
Speaker 1: I started a COVID task force. We were so locked
21:37
Speaker 1: down and secure here. We didn't have laptops, we didn't
21:40
Speaker 1: have anything, you know, with the idea of someone you know,
21:43
Speaker 1: and so we started a COVID Task force in January,
21:47
Speaker 1: I think late January maybe maybe early whatever, and immediately
21:52
Speaker 1: made some decisions to try to ready ourselves for potential
21:57
Speaker 1: home deployment. Yeah, and then February nineteenth rolls around and
22:03
Speaker 1: the just the bottom fell out. Yeah, and I remember,
22:06
Speaker 1: you know, the same type of going through. That was
22:09
Speaker 1: kind of crazy listening to that story. It was a
22:11
Speaker 1: little reminiscent there. Yeah, what a lucky How lucky were
22:14
Speaker 1: they to go get a job really really quickly? Yeah,
22:17
Speaker 1: and in the midst of everybody being laid off, this
22:20
Speaker 1: person was hired. Like yeah, yeah, got to believe they
22:22
Speaker 1: have like a really great risk.
22:24
Speaker 2: Yeah for sure.
22:25
Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, you're up.
22:27
Speaker 3: Okay, I've got one story for today. It's really really long.
22:33
Speaker 4: A lot of these submitted stories are, which we appreciate it.
22:36
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I appreciate it.
22:38
Speaker 1: Attention to detail, Yeah, do some detail and tell the story.
22:43
Speaker 1: It's awesome. Yeah.
22:44
Speaker 3: So this was submitted for our contest, but they wanted
22:46
Speaker 3: to remain anonymous.
22:48
Speaker 1: So anonymous you are. Yep.
22:50
Speaker 3: This story is called Sudden Amnesia. I worked for a
22:54
Speaker 3: manufacturing plant back around twenty twenty one and we hired
22:58
Speaker 3: this gentleman as a forklift driver. He was a little odd,
23:02
Speaker 3: but so are many people in our area, so we
23:04
Speaker 3: decided to take a chance on him. I love the
23:07
Speaker 3: way the story is told. It is so funny.
23:09
Speaker 1: Yes, some other people in our area.
23:12
Speaker 3: New higher orientation comes around. Ours is about three days long.
23:16
Speaker 3: He shows up bright adam bushytailed and successfully. He made
23:19
Speaker 3: it through all three days with no issue. Great, Now
23:21
Speaker 3: it's time to get him to the floor. Day one
23:24
Speaker 3: on the floor arrives. He is scheduled to be there
23:26
Speaker 3: at six fifty five am. No show. Okay, I'll give
23:30
Speaker 3: him a call and see what happened. We call the number.
23:32
Speaker 3: He provided, no answer. We give him two hours, still
23:35
Speaker 3: no show. I try to call again and a female
23:37
Speaker 3: answers the phone. I tell her that I'm looking for
23:39
Speaker 3: this gentleman, and I ask if he's available. She responds
23:42
Speaker 3: he's not there yet. He left two hours ago. My
23:45
Speaker 3: heart drops. I've seen horror stories, so I wonder I
23:49
Speaker 3: are worried that something had happened to him. She tells
23:52
Speaker 3: me that she's his girlfriend and that she will try
23:54
Speaker 3: to call him, and then she'll call.
23:56
Speaker 2: Me about phone at home.
23:57
Speaker 4: Then I guess I don't.
24:00
Speaker 3: He'll see Okay, So two minutes later my phone rings
24:04
Speaker 3: and it's the girlfriend again. He's almost there. Here's his
24:07
Speaker 3: number if you want to call him.
24:08
Speaker 2: Great.
24:09
Speaker 3: Relieve to hear he's okay. I thank her and call
24:11
Speaker 3: the number she gave me, and he picks up right away.
24:13
Speaker 3: I ask him if everything is okay and he plans,
24:16
Speaker 3: and if he plans to get to work. He assures
24:18
Speaker 3: me that he's on the way and that he's about
24:20
Speaker 3: to pass the McDonald's that is one mile from the plant. Wonderful.
24:24
Speaker 3: I thank him and hang up and let his super
24:26
Speaker 3: supervisor know that he is almost there, and then go
24:28
Speaker 3: on with my day. Two hours later, I passed the
24:31
Speaker 3: supervisor in the hallway and ask if his new hire
24:33
Speaker 3: made it and how he was doing. He looked at
24:36
Speaker 3: me with a puzzled look and tells me that he
24:37
Speaker 3: never showed up. Surprised and a little annoyed that they
24:41
Speaker 3: didn't tell me sooner, I call the new hire back.
24:43
Speaker 3: He answers right away. Admittedly I was annoyed at the time,
24:47
Speaker 3: so I was a little more sarcastic than I preferred
24:49
Speaker 3: to admit. But I ask him, do you need any
24:52
Speaker 3: help finding the place? He tells me that he thought
24:55
Speaker 3: he knew how to get there, but asked if I
24:57
Speaker 3: can give him direction.
24:57
Speaker 2: Oh my god, mind.
24:58
Speaker 3: You, he was just there for orientation to three days
25:01
Speaker 3: prior to this day. So she so she like, she
25:07
Speaker 3: even like shares her what she was thinking to herself, because, okay,
25:11
Speaker 3: take a deep breath, your.
25:12
Speaker 1: Professional, this professional hr prison.
25:17
Speaker 3: Yes, she just wants to be seep breath. You're a professional,
25:20
Speaker 3: I say to myself Before responding to him, I ask
25:23
Speaker 3: him where he is, and he tells me. I give
25:26
Speaker 3: him some general directions to get there and provide the
25:28
Speaker 3: address for him to use maps if needed. He assures
25:31
Speaker 3: me he will be there shortly and apologizes for the inconvenience.
25:34
Speaker 3: I again tell the supervisor to be on the lookout
25:37
Speaker 3: and to please let me know if he doesn't arrive
25:39
Speaker 3: within the hour. Two more hours later, I reach out
25:43
Speaker 3: to the supervisor and ask how it's going. I assume
25:46
Speaker 3: he arrived since I never heard otherwise. Nope, supervisors said
25:49
Speaker 3: he never showed up. It's about one pm at this
25:52
Speaker 3: point and his shift ends at three point thirty. I
25:55
Speaker 3: call him again, definitely agitated. This time. He answers right away.
25:59
Speaker 1: She answers.
26:00
Speaker 3: He answers right away and tells me that he is
26:03
Speaker 3: on his way and will be there in two minutes.
26:07
Speaker 3: I advise. I advise him that he missed the majority
26:11
Speaker 3: of his shift and to just not even come in
26:13
Speaker 3: at all today and to come in at his normal
26:15
Speaker 3: time on Monday at sixty five am.
26:19
Speaker 1: Craziness. We're just going to forget today.
26:22
Speaker 2: Yeah, come back tomorrow, he agrees.
26:24
Speaker 3: We hang up. Do you think he showed up again? No? No,
26:28
Speaker 3: no call, no show again on Monday. At this point,
26:31
Speaker 3: we have a very strict attendance policy, and he had
26:34
Speaker 3: essentially terminated himself through attendants. So I get the approvals,
26:38
Speaker 3: I write his letter, and I give him a call.
26:40
Speaker 3: I asked him if he was aware that he was
26:42
Speaker 3: supposed to come into work today at six fifty five am.
26:45
Speaker 3: He said he didn't know. I advised him that he
26:47
Speaker 3: had pointed himself out and we were so already know
26:50
Speaker 3: him at that.
26:52
Speaker 1: There the schedule.
26:54
Speaker 3: He says, he understands. I ask him if he has
26:57
Speaker 3: any questions. He says no. We hang up, and I
27:00
Speaker 3: washed my hands of him, or so I thought, if
27:03
Speaker 3: only this was the true end. Fifteen minutes later, I
27:07
Speaker 3: get a call from this guy. Hey, I was just
27:09
Speaker 3: calling to see if.
27:10
Speaker 1: You were hiring.
27:11
Speaker 2: No way, are you kidding me?
27:14
Speaker 3: I genuinely had to mute the phone call because I
27:16
Speaker 3: was laughing out loud at the situation, no way. I
27:19
Speaker 3: decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. We
27:22
Speaker 3: are a large company and we have many locations. Maybe
27:24
Speaker 3: he meant to call another one. I unmute myself and
27:27
Speaker 3: ask if he meant to call our location, our location,
27:30
Speaker 3: or one of our others. He replied with, oh, yours
27:33
Speaker 3: is fine. It is closer for me. This dude no words.
27:37
Speaker 3: I have no words I can describe my shock at
27:39
Speaker 3: this moment. I mean, was he hit on the head
27:42
Speaker 3: after orientations some sorry, some short term amnesia. I'd probably
27:51
Speaker 3: tell him that I had separated with him earlier that
27:54
Speaker 3: day and advised him that he's not eligible for rehire
27:58
Speaker 3: and hung up the phone.
27:59
Speaker 1: He was so nice this job. I didn know who
28:02
Speaker 1: he was employee.
28:03
Speaker 3: Literally, I sat at my desk with my head in
28:06
Speaker 3: my hands and laughed hysterically for about twenty minutes. Two
28:10
Speaker 3: days later, I get a call from our warehouse supervisor
28:14
Speaker 3: at our off site warehouse. He asked me if I
28:16
Speaker 3: knew a guy and say to his name, I kid
28:18
Speaker 3: you not. It was the same guy. He went to
28:21
Speaker 3: our offsite warehouse, where there are no offices, by the way,
28:24
Speaker 3: and asked if we were hiring again unless speak.
28:28
Speaker 2: On that place. Yeah, for really, how'd you find that place?
28:32
Speaker 3: I tell him that's the new hire that we just
28:34
Speaker 3: ended on Monday. Because of attendance, I asked him to
28:36
Speaker 3: go outside and tell him that he is not an
28:38
Speaker 3: employee anymore and is not to be on company property
28:42
Speaker 3: without prior approval. Thank goodness, that was the last time
28:45
Speaker 3: that he graced us with his presence. He applied online
28:48
Speaker 3: for a few more roles, but shockingly, we never called
28:51
Speaker 3: him that surprise surprise.
28:54
Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, this is hilarious. Love.
28:57
Speaker 2: I love this straight.
28:59
Speaker 3: I love the way this person wrote it to It's
29:01
Speaker 3: so funny.
29:02
Speaker 1: Yeah, oh that's my story for today. I bet there's
29:08
Speaker 1: just like so many of those. I bet just so
29:10
Speaker 1: many great stories of just people are just like no show.
29:13
Speaker 1: It's like a complete disconnect from reality, like.
29:18
Speaker 2: I just alluded.
29:19
Speaker 3: What got it for me was him calling literally fifteen
29:21
Speaker 3: minutes after they fired him. He said, hey, are you hiring?
29:26
Speaker 1: He was working hard to get a job. He immediately
29:29
Speaker 1: went to the did you.
29:30
Speaker 3: Call it this location or another one? This is the one.
29:33
Speaker 1: It's called local companies hiring. Apparently they're a big company,
29:38
Speaker 1: just calling the big companies.
29:39
Speaker 3: I guess I don't know.
29:40
Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, what a great story.
29:43
Speaker 2: That's a really good one. I really liked that one.
29:45
Speaker 1: I love that. Why we continue to get more like that?
29:49
Speaker 3: Yeah, that was a great, really big contender for our
29:52
Speaker 3: Yeah right there, sure, I really I really love that.
29:55
Speaker 1: Oh my gosh. Yeah. So you know we're we're but
30:00
Speaker 1: I just want to say, you know, we need to
30:02
Speaker 1: remind people submit stories. Submit stories. Submit stories. Today's we
30:07
Speaker 1: said before, it's the first time has been all submitted stories.
30:10
Speaker 1: Loved it. Some of the best stories for sure. I
30:13
Speaker 1: think when people write the stories for this kind of presentation,
30:18
Speaker 1: you know they can. I think they're kind of cool
30:20
Speaker 1: and they're probably a little better than what we can
30:23
Speaker 1: find that wasn't necessarily meant for it to be told
30:25
Speaker 1: by someone like us. So if you if you got
30:28
Speaker 1: a story, and we know you've got a story, tell
30:31
Speaker 1: us send it to us. You can go to the
30:32
Speaker 1: badhire dot com. You can submit it online. You can
30:35
Speaker 1: I think, you can reach out by via email. You
30:38
Speaker 1: can tell us you want to be on the show.
30:39
Speaker 1: You can do a video segment and have you can
30:41
Speaker 1: tell your own story or talk with a producer. We've
30:45
Speaker 1: had some really cool interactions from really cool. I think,
30:48
Speaker 1: you know, how is that going? Is it? Nathan's doing
30:52
Speaker 1: most of them.
30:52
Speaker 2: Yeah, it's been great.
30:53
Speaker 4: We've gotten great feedback. Everybody's love being on the show
30:56
Speaker 4: so far. They're excited when their episode comes out. So
30:59
Speaker 4: I think it's great and we've had a lot of interest,
31:02
Speaker 4: so we're excited to have you guys on the show.
31:04
Speaker 3: Yeah.
31:04
Speaker 1: So we get a long pipeline of people, but that
31:06
Speaker 1: doesn't mean we'll get in because as we work through them,
31:08
Speaker 1: some people will not. We'll set you know, we'll change
31:10
Speaker 1: their mind or whatever and so. And then also the
31:13
Speaker 1: intent is to try to ramp it up the amount
31:15
Speaker 1: of interviews that we can do, so we can replace
31:17
Speaker 1: stories with video interviews as much as possible. But you
31:21
Speaker 1: can always not do that and submit a story like
31:24
Speaker 1: this one. Yeah, and there were a couple I think today.
31:26
Speaker 1: One today was anonymous. Another person's yeah, I.
31:28
Speaker 2: Don't care if you share my information. Yeah.
31:30
Speaker 1: Yeah. But at the end of the year, we'll give
31:32
Speaker 1: away ten thousand dollars to the best to the best
31:35
Speaker 1: to the to the best story of the year, and
31:37
Speaker 1: so I'm looking forward to that. That's going to be fun. Yeah,
31:40
Speaker 1: and I'm excited about you know, kind of the the
31:43
