- 0:03[SPEAKER_00]: Hello, hello, and welcome to another edition of the 9-Renoise podcast, part of the fan-sided podcast network.
- 0:09[SPEAKER_00]: My name is Robert Morrison, a contributor at 9-Renoise.com, and here with me, fresh off his post Super Bowl break.
- 0:17[SPEAKER_00]: Fellow contributor, Oksha's Dividula Oksha's, how are we doing?
- 0:22[SPEAKER_01]: Well, Robert, you've mentioned this thing called a Super Bowl.
- 0:27[SPEAKER_01]: I honestly, I don't really know it from my understanding.
- 0:31[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think the NFL had one this year, so.
- 0:34[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they just had a big, big, bad bunny concert at Levi's, I think, is what happened.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's what I remember.
- 0:40[SPEAKER_01]: No, I'm getting Robert.
- 0:42[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously as I think most well.
- 0:45[SPEAKER_01]: I want to see most neither fans.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_01]: I know some people can oftentimes get a little when it comes to like rooting interest in the Super Bowl.
- 0:52[SPEAKER_01]: Some people are like oh you root for the team that beat you because they're like root for the conference.
- 0:59[SPEAKER_00]: No.
- 0:59[SPEAKER_00]: No.
- 1:00[SPEAKER_01]: It's not said.
- 1:01[SPEAKER_01]: I disagree entirely.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_01]: That was those sad.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_01]: Those gifts creating.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_01]: But I mean,
- 1:10[SPEAKER_01]: credit were credits do I mean Seattle play it was I think statistically the best team.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and then I felt this year and absolutely like put on a show against I mean they made they made the patients look like they didn't belong.
- 1:26[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:26[SPEAKER_01]: Well, Patriots didn't belong.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:30[SPEAKER_01]: I mean it was it was dominant I think for the Niners it's frustrating because
- 1:37[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you've been close to the mount's a top, but your division rival gets, I mean, yeah, like if we take a step back from it being Seattle, like it's incredibly impressive, what they did.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_00]: Sure.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_01]: Right, like two years,
- 1:52[SPEAKER_01]: from like basically being aimless, there's Super Bowl champs.
- 1:56[SPEAKER_01]: And I mean, like, made all the right moves.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_01]: Super frustrating, I'm not a fan of it, but I mean, the game wasn't even very fun to watch.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_00]: No, so I, like, hand up, I watched the first half.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_00]: We were at my, at some family's house, and we had the kids and everything.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_00]: So we watched the first half, watched the half of them show, and it's like, all right, well, we gotta go, because at that point, it was like, nine and nothing or something, I was like, oh my gosh, this is the worst.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_00]: And I think I watched a little bits of it of the second half, but like was just kind of checking in on it.
- 2:30[SPEAKER_00]: Basically it looked like Seattle had run up was going to run away with it.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_00]: There was that small glimmer of hope when they both scored touchdowns finally.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_00]: And then Seattle's defense did well.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_00]: Seattle's defense is done all year.
- 2:43[SPEAKER_01]: It was frustrating because I think like Seattle's defense played well.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_01]: Don't get me wrong.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_01]: And not like as well.
- 2:51[SPEAKER_01]: I think we saw them play at other points in the year.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_01]: And you just, I don't know, for me, it kind of had the sense that it's like the paint, like if Drake made sort of had like his wits about him.
- 3:06[SPEAKER_01]: Like this, the defense was there for the taking.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_01]: They just like for whatever reason.
- 3:10[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I mean, like it just, he couldn't, he couldn't take advantage of the opportunity.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_01]: But I don't know, like, that's enough about the number that they're very bad.
- 3:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_00]: No, I mean, I think it's certainly, whichever, I think it's pretty safe to say, whichever one of the four semi-finalists that had come out of the NFC was probably going to win the Super Bowl.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_00]: I mean,
- 3:38[SPEAKER_01]: Especially once Denver.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, once right.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_01]: He was ankle right once.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_00]: Once Denver was out of the mix There wasn't another team in that because like Denver that would have been a gosh that could have been the world's most boring game of all time Can you imagine just Denver and Seattle just their respected defenses beating up on their relatively mediocre offenses and just like
- 4:00[SPEAKER_00]: That game could have been like nine to three or something like that, and that would have been the final score to have been hilarious.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_00]: Um, yeah, I think so on that front is also frustrating because you're like, I'm not just going to take it in that Patriots team.
- 4:12[SPEAKER_00]: Like, they were, they were certainly there ahead of schedule, right?
- 4:16[SPEAKER_00]: Um, like nobody anticipated that being the team that would get back, that would get to the Super Bowl.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_00]: Um, in that worst of first situation that they were in.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_00]: Um, yeah, I mean, it is what it is.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, we could talk about the sort of broader, um, impacts of, like, Seattle winning the game, and really even Seattle being there would have been enough, I think, to constitute a conversation.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_00]: But clearly, there's,
- 4:42[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, if they weren't already, if there wasn't already something to aim for with like Seattle in their improvements, the fact that they won the whole thing, like really gives, it's like a, obviously a target on their back for the entirety of league, but their NFC West compatriots, specifically the Rams and the 49ers, I think like it's like, how do we beat that version of this team has got to be the thought on their mind for the next two or three seasons, right?
- 5:09[SPEAKER_01]: And the fear is that, right?
- 5:11[SPEAKER_01]: Like, you can even argue frankly that Seattle was early too, right?
- 5:17[SPEAKER_01]: Like, they have so much cap space.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_01]: Like, it's a really well-oiled machine.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_01]: Now, I think the thing about Seattle for me that makes me be like, a little less worried is that while the defense was really, really good, I think like a healthier 49ers offense,
- 5:36[SPEAKER_01]: It has like opportunities against it.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_01]: You just like, like you got to match up.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_01]: And I think like because of that, you don't really have the worry.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_01]: Like I don't know.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think that defense is going to continue to be historic the way they go.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, there's a year.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_01]: But I think the worry is that that offense, like sort of like picks it up a little bit, gets better.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, maybe darn old.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_01]: develop a little further, they sort of get a better sense of what they want to do.
- 6:08[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's a little terrifying because, you know, their offense was like fine, and they want to Super Bowl.
- 6:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's crazy.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_01]: That like that being the case, either it's a blip, which I don't know, hopefully.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_01]: But, or like, they have to chance to build something really strong there, and I do
- 6:33[SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of pressure.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you have four games that are probably the hardest in the NFL, just by being in the NFC West.
- 6:41[SPEAKER_01]: And that's the reality is that in the same way that I think Seattle had the same issue in 2021 to 2023, where they were fine, they were okay.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_01]: But they weren't at the level of the Rams in the fore.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_01]: 49ers and it was just four games where they just they couldn't compete at that level think for the Niners knowing through the site retool Like you there's a state there's a physicality and like a quality to that defense that they on offense have to like match up to and it's hard to tell I mean
- 7:16[SPEAKER_01]: Seattle's defense wasn't, it's best in week one.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_01]: The manager's offense was at no point, like healthy, basically.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_01]: It's so, like you don't know, you don't know, like what Monoma really looks like.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_01]: What you do know is that in the three games, like Seattle took, took him behind the shed for two of them.
- 7:35[SPEAKER_01]: So that's, there's, there's an uphill battle, but I like that in so far as,
- 7:43[SPEAKER_01]: I think it forces the Niners to like be aggressive, right?
- 7:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, they have to do more.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_01]: They can't sort of like rest on some internal improvement, because like they have the NSC, the, what's called the NSC runner-ups and the Super Bowl champions and their division.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, um, yeah, I think that's all that's all really well said.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and it seems like from what little we've heard from the the coaching staff and the front office in the time since the nine years got eliminated.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I think Shannon had said something about like needing to get faster on offense and I think that's pretty that's pretty clear like the lack of a
- 8:25[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, we're going to talk about team, the needs of this team, sort of frequently throughout the next couple of months or weeks, I guess, really, but yeah, like finding ways to get better is really important.
- 8:43[SPEAKER_00]: I wanted to hold on a second, I lost my train of thought here momentarily, but I'll arrive at it.
- 8:51[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, I mean, like, in a general sense, like having that in your division is gonna be rough, but we also know that there's the opportunity that if all three teams are fairly evenly matched, there's that, like they're gonna beat up on each other, kind of thing, we'll be happening.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_00]: Like they all, I think they were all one and one against each other in the regular season.
- 9:18[SPEAKER_00]: Is that right?
- 9:19[SPEAKER_00]: That sounds right, doesn't it?
- 9:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 9:20[SPEAKER_00]: So like that's gonna keep happening for the next couple of seasons.
- 9:23[SPEAKER_00]: And it's just, it's all about like, who can figure out how to sort of like get over the hump at the right time.
- 9:28[SPEAKER_00]: And we'll talk about a bunch of stuff as it relates to,
- 9:33[SPEAKER_00]: What's what's been happening over the course of the next, over the last couple of weeks since we've, since we recorded, so that will be good to do.
- 9:44[SPEAKER_00]: Do we have any final thought, anything else to say in terms of like, what is it that this means for the FOIA and honors?
- 9:52[SPEAKER_01]: I just like, what I think in really man is that they're initial thought like of their blueprint, like works, right?
- 10:03[SPEAKER_01]: That defense once he had a championship, it was a damn, I don't know if I'm allowed to sit in it, it's a damn good defense.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 10:14[SPEAKER_01]: And I think for the Niners, the biggest slip over the last couple of few years has been the defense, right?
- 10:24[SPEAKER_01]: It's gone from being in 2019.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_01]: Like that level, the 29 defense was at that level.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_01]: It just didn't, you know, didn't get the job done in the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl, but they haven't reached that level of dominance and they need, like, I think investing in that, like they've tried to do and sort of like on offense getting a little more speed like you said is, but really, like the defensive area is where
- 10:57[SPEAKER_01]: for this team and where likes Seattle showed.
- 11:00[SPEAKER_01]: Like if that is as good as it was in 2019, in the NFL right now, like this version of the NFL, that's good enough to win you a Super Bowl.
- 11:11[SPEAKER_01]: So, I don't know, I think if they weren't already gonna make sure they're gonna invest heavily in their defense, like I think that's definitely, it's an arms race.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_01]: And right now, they're probably third in the division,
- 11:26[SPEAKER_01]: But they should have a chance to catch up quickly in the off season.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_00]: All right, so we're going to run through a bunch of other things that have happened over the course of the last couple of weeks, again, since we recorded our last episode.
- 11:41[SPEAKER_00]: That was right off the top, because I was the official end of the 20, 25 season, and we're getting closer, like what, pretty much a month away from the start of the new
- 11:56[SPEAKER_00]: Um, so we're just going to run through a couple of things, talk about him and that sort of stuff.
- 12:00[SPEAKER_00]: So the first thing, this is the most recent piece of information that's happened.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if you saw this, um, Matt Barrow's, uh, incituating, uh, and and exactly, I just saw that he said this.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm not sure if you could shed further light on on the, this, what has been said, he's like apparently George Kittle being back for week one,
- 12:23[SPEAKER_00]: Is it, is that like, what George Kiddlestang or is that like actually a real thing?
- 12:32[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't know.
- 12:34[SPEAKER_01]: I wish I did, it's not super clear, I mean, I don't mean, is that like humanly possible?
- 12:42[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 12:43[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 12:43[SPEAKER_00]: I actually don't know, like physically speaking, that would be, that'd be cutting the time for him and let's see, he did it in what January, uh, week one is in September.
- 12:54[SPEAKER_00]: So February March, February March April, May June, July.
- 13:02[SPEAKER_00]: August is seven months.
- 13:05[SPEAKER_00]: So call it seven and a half months.
- 13:06[SPEAKER_01]: So he'd be like two and a half months ahead of the shortest end of the of the of the time frame now like he said that Supposedly the tear was a good one right.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_00]: We talked about that.
- 13:22[SPEAKER_01]: But like I don't know whatever that means.
- 13:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we don't know.
- 13:25[SPEAKER_01]: So it's so exact.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_01]: Like I like thankfully
- 13:31[SPEAKER_01]: I don't have a lot of exposure to like Achilles injuries as a fan or as a person.
- 13:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's wonderful.
- 13:38[SPEAKER_01]: So there's no sense in which I like, it's hard for us to tell sort of like, if we're at the tear happens really makes that much of a difference.
- 13:50[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I think, you know, tunnel in warners or if there are two guys on this team that would
- 14:00[SPEAKER_01]: cut down their like rehab times to get as soon as back as soon as possible.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_01]: It's those two.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm not particularly surprised that he'd like fight it aggressively.
- 14:11[SPEAKER_01]: I don't I don't know if like it's gonna happen.
- 14:14[SPEAKER_01]: I do think
- 14:16[SPEAKER_01]: If he's looked aiming for week one, that means he's probably going to get on to the field a lot sooner.
- 14:21[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 14:22[SPEAKER_01]: We thought like I was I thought like when I saw I was like oh, so he's he's just like missing the The 26 season.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but that doesn't seem to necessarily like that probably won't happen anymore, which is Well, huge for the 90.
- 14:35[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I don't know.
- 14:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, if you put it if you put it at the beginning at the front end of the nine to 12 month
- 14:46[SPEAKER_00]: That's still light end of September October.
- 14:52[SPEAKER_00]: But I mean, frankly, I think you take that, consider all things considered, right?
- 14:57[SPEAKER_00]: If he comes back for what, 10 games, 8 games, I think you'd be like, I'm all in, especially because it's like 8 games plus theoretically the playoff, which would be great.
- 15:07[SPEAKER_00]: Like, if then you have George Kittle of Full Strength, and he hasn't played football.
- 15:12[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, could you just imagine, like, like,
- 15:15[SPEAKER_00]: beyond excited to get out there and just be ready to just tear some people up.
- 15:19[SPEAKER_00]: So I would take that and if that's what we get, if that's what we get, then yes, bring it on.
- 15:27[SPEAKER_01]: So you mentioned something.
- 15:29[SPEAKER_01]: That's another thing that I think is, I don't know, worth highlighting about, like, just the way that NFC wish shook up.
- 15:36[SPEAKER_01]: Like, the miners still have a third place schedule again.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_01]: really really I mean like expectations for this team next year immediately like they should be in the play house really they should be super full contenders I think is like the default of what we're thinking anyway not really related to kittled but you mentioned a like sort of I don't know just like the schedule and games in the playoffs reminded me of like oh yeah he like foreshared
- 16:09[SPEAKER_01]: like they they should be in the playoffs.
- 16:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 16:12[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, ultimately, I think one of the things we'll talk about this offseason is they need to start thinking about what's the next plan at tight end after George Kittle.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_00]: But I also will take a couple more.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_00]: Like I'd be like let's draft that guy and let's have
- 16:26[SPEAKER_00]: George Ferd, a couple more seasons.
- 16:28[SPEAKER_00]: I'm full and on board.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_00]: But we'll see, hopefully, like, don't, don't, don't do any long-term damage to your self in order to get back for week one, George is what I would say.
- 16:39[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, he, like, like Kyle Janahan, John Lynch, avid listener to this podcast, of course.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_00]: Speaking of avid listeners to this podcast, a Christian McAfrey had a good night on
- 16:54[SPEAKER_00]: Wow, just ruin my segway.
- 16:57[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, sorry.
- 16:58[SPEAKER_02]: Sorry.
- 16:59[SPEAKER_00]: It's so good.
- 17:00[SPEAKER_00]: Christopher McAvery had a good night at NFL honors.
- 17:02[SPEAKER_00]: Those that there's an app before the Super Bowl took home three awards that night.
- 17:09[SPEAKER_00]: I come back player the year, which was kind of like a no brainer and like the other guys.
- 17:14[SPEAKER_00]: Most of the other guys just needed to not be on that list at all.
- 17:16[SPEAKER_00]: It's just a joke.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_00]: Um, Philip Rivers also receiving votes.
- 17:21[SPEAKER_00]: for that award, whatever.
- 17:24[SPEAKER_00]: He also received the Slute Service Award for the NFL, which is related to his relationship with the Armed Forces and such.
- 17:33[SPEAKER_00]: And that's another honor that he got.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_00]: He also was the FedEx ground player of the year.
- 17:39[SPEAKER_00]: Drake May was the Air Player and Jackson Smith, Nijigba, also the part of the air.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not really sure how that works because the quarterback in the receiver, but you know what I mean.
- 17:50[SPEAKER_00]: And then he just missed offensive player the year by two first place votes over JSN.
- 17:55[SPEAKER_00]: I wasn't terribly surprised that was the direction that they went offensive player the year.
- 17:59[SPEAKER_00]: If he had won both those out of him like pretty shocked.
- 18:04[SPEAKER_00]: Again, we talked about this.
- 18:04[SPEAKER_00]: I think the thousand thousand thing might have bumped him over the edge.
- 18:08[SPEAKER_00]: when it was all said and done and just missing out on that might have been enough for people to be like all right well that wasn't quite historic and so this guys season was ultimately more impressive but big night for him uh pretty cool after the the bad season that 2024 was for him for him to see all those honors come his way yeah i mean the one thing to i is that he was like if i have
- 18:36[SPEAKER_01]: We're calling fifth and MVP voting, yeah, so that's also I think ready me just like It's kind of off that he was an ad of Jason for MVP, but below for OPO, why, but I think he was he was fourth and MVP voting actually wow, so that's what I mean, like, that's pretty neat and I think
- 19:06[SPEAKER_01]: not dint win opioid for that, but I don't know, like different awards, I get it, like, you can, I don't know, I understand the difference, but in any case, yeah, I get what you're saying.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_00]: It is a little strange to be the fourth best overall player, but not the best offensive player.
- 19:25[SPEAKER_00]: That's, that's kind of what you're alluding to, right?
- 19:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, I, but like, I mean, he was, he was, they basically said
- 19:36[SPEAKER_01]: But not the offensive.
- 19:37[SPEAKER_00]: But not the offensive.
- 19:38[SPEAKER_00]: I go to sin.
- 19:38[SPEAKER_01]: I really think it's one of those like, oh, you care a lot because of like just like importance to the team.
- 19:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, if it's an hiring value, they're right.
- 19:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, exactly.
- 19:51[SPEAKER_01]: But oh, our thug notes, just like, it was a great, it was a great season for like CMC.
- 19:57[SPEAKER_01]: And I think particularly we saw sort of how the offense relied on him in a way that
- 20:05[SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't really rely on a player, like to the, and to the Niners' detriment, I think, to be yeah, to be fair, but I mean, like he, like he really, he will then to a lot of wins that they should have had when they were barely like taped together as a team and I think so great season, hopefully he stays, stays healthy and manages to do another one.
- 20:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that would be nice.
- 20:32[SPEAKER_00]: Kyle Shanahan finished fifth in Coach of the year voting.
- 20:37[SPEAKER_00]: Despite having more first place votes, then Ben Johnson, he did not.
- 20:42[SPEAKER_00]: He was in last.
- 20:44[SPEAKER_00]: There's a point system depending on like first, second, third, et cetera.
- 20:48[SPEAKER_00]: That's how they ended up.
- 20:49[SPEAKER_00]: The talent goes.
- 20:50[SPEAKER_00]: Mike Rable won, Liam Cohen was second, Mike McDonald, third, and Ben Johnson fourth.
- 20:55[SPEAKER_00]: And then Kyle Shanahan somehow fifth.
- 20:58[SPEAKER_01]: that one is a little like more into like in defense for only because i think like my could don't know when the super boat right so great for now no coach see i was like a good team yeah when he can get it's not like they were in the doldrums when he showed up really wow like for last year this year i think last year they were like a 10 when team that didn't make the playoffs and then they like yeah they got barefoot like i don't know like i'm i don't i don't i don't i don't think
- 21:26[SPEAKER_01]: He like McDonald should have gotten over Shanna Han, just sort of given the respective things.
- 21:33[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's also an indication that coach the years, like a Delaware because Super Bowl winning coach was not the coach of the year.
- 21:39[SPEAKER_01]: So I mean, like, you know, but if you're playing the game based off the way that these voters tend to do it, it seems internally inconsistent, but whatever, I don't know.
- 21:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, not my brain.
- 21:56[SPEAKER_00]: Well said.
- 21:57[SPEAKER_00]: All right, so that's this is some some big things.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_00]: Also on that night, we'll we'll talk about the last thing that was really to NFL honors.
- 22:07[SPEAKER_00]: announced the proof of the Hall of Fame class of 2026, two 49er greats were up in the running one in the seniors class one in the modern era.
- 22:20[SPEAKER_00]: Roger Craig finally a Hall of Famer after gosh, I mean.
- 22:24[SPEAKER_00]: years, like 30 something on years that he's been retired, I think.
- 22:29[SPEAKER_00]: So big, big, awesome, awesome, awesome opportunity to get him in.
- 22:34[SPEAKER_00]: He was like one of the only players on those 80s teams.
- 22:38[SPEAKER_00]: That was not
- 22:39[SPEAKER_00]: in the Hall of Fame that should have been.
- 22:41[SPEAKER_00]: And so that's really cool.
- 22:43[SPEAKER_00]: Frank Gore, missed being a first ballot Hall of Famer.
- 22:48[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, I am going to say I'm not surprised.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_00]: I think some of it was just like bad timing, like jubries and uh,
- 22:57[SPEAKER_00]: Larry Fitzgerald were like nailed on first ballot guys and that just leaves that just didn't leave enough spots for the modern era guys, right?
- 23:08[SPEAKER_00]: Because of the way that they do, because of the way the voting works, it just made it, it's just going to make it difficult.
- 23:16[SPEAKER_00]: And then you had, you know, guys who'd been in the running in years before in Luke Keakley and Adam Bitton Teary who got in as
- 23:24[SPEAKER_00]: I think Franco get there but it's just some of it's going to be a timing thing like is he going to be able to find a slot where he fits in where the the the the the guys that are coming in on the ballot are not so overwhelming.
- 23:39[SPEAKER_00]: that there will be opportunities.
- 23:40[SPEAKER_00]: It also sounds like there are a lot of the voters are a little bit like perturbed with the way the new voting system works and they're concerned that it's leaving some important players out in opportunities.
- 23:52[SPEAKER_00]: So awesome for Roger Craig, bummer for Frank Gore, but I think he'll get there.
- 23:58[SPEAKER_00]: It just may take a little time.
- 24:00[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 24:01[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I don't know.
- 24:03[SPEAKER_01]: I agree.
- 24:03[SPEAKER_01]: I think the thing with Gore is,
- 24:07[SPEAKER_01]: But I think voters had a sort of like a preconceived notion of like him being a compiler or whatever.
- 24:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, like, you know, night was at 1600 yards over 16 seasons.
- 24:20[SPEAKER_00]: So pretty consistent.
- 24:22[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that like 16,000 yards.
- 24:25[SPEAKER_00]: Sorry.
- 24:26[SPEAKER_01]: That's a hard thing to to be.
- 24:30[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, like, I think he'll get an interventionally, it's one of those, like, just he's in the record book too much.
- 24:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's the third or third leading retro all the time.
- 24:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like, if that goes out of the Hall of Fame, your Hall of Fame is broken.
- 24:46[SPEAKER_01]: For Roger Craig, it's a, it's a phenomenal, like, well-deserved achievement.
- 24:52[SPEAKER_01]: I think for those of you who have listened to the podcast enough, you're well aware of not actually,
- 24:56[SPEAKER_01]: scene Roger Clayer Craig played football, but I mean, like his legacy permeates, this the Niners, but also like the NFL.
- 25:05[SPEAKER_01]: I think he really redefined the running back position for an incredible offensive.
- 25:09[SPEAKER_01]: It was like a culture center, or those 80s teams, which is one of the greatest dinosaur, then, if else ever seen.
- 25:17[SPEAKER_01]: So, while deserved, I was really cool in the Super Bowl to see him get the love from the crowd, which was a
- 25:23[SPEAKER_01]: pretty Niners heavy crowd, thankful even those the Super Bowl.
- 25:27[SPEAKER_01]: I think I'm excited for them today.
- 25:30[SPEAKER_01]: The final thing I'll say about this, the Hall of Fame.
- 25:34[SPEAKER_01]: It's really two things.
- 25:35[SPEAKER_01]: One, Luki Kikling, getting inducted, is a reminder of like,
- 25:40[SPEAKER_01]: what what we were robbed of with Navarro Bowman just because of what I mean it's just I those two felt very like similar to me and I think you know but Bowman's entry it's the shame like he really he was on that trajectory the other thing is like particularly getting in on a second try in Willis needing like three or four look at Willis mm-hmm
- 26:02[SPEAKER_01]: Not a fan don't like that, but it's okay, everyone's worthy supposed to be eventually, but yeah didn't love that and if all of fame voters.
- 26:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean at the end of the day, I don't think anybody really most people don't remember like what ballot they got in for the most part, it's just like who's in there and who's not.
- 26:21[SPEAKER_01]: So it's I think it's really one.
- 26:25[SPEAKER_01]: or like the floor you got in at some point or like if this is the last one I think you might remember a little bit because you'll be like oh man like yeah oh yeah it's gonna your teeth yeah yeah but yeah I mean they're all whole fingers at the end of the day yeah absolutely um speaking of Roger Craig we'll finish up the first segment here and we'll talk about a couple other things
- 26:47[SPEAKER_00]: not related to awards and whatnot.
- 26:49[SPEAKER_00]: So I got a chance to watch the Fortanners doc that was the rise of the Fortanners on AMC+.
- 27:01[SPEAKER_00]: I was, you know, produced and
- 27:04[SPEAKER_00]: They said it narrated by Tom Brady, but it's like, that's a little bit true, but also like he just kind of pops in and gives his, like he grew up in the area during the time when the, the teams that they were talking about.
- 27:16[SPEAKER_00]: He's from San Mateo and he talks about going to some of these games like he was at the game.
- 27:21[SPEAKER_00]: He was at the catch game and he was at, you know, several of the other games that they talked about through the 80s and it's just like his perspective on it.
- 27:30[SPEAKER_00]: I actually didn't know you said you hadn't had a chance to watch it, but I just wanted to drop in a few thoughts about it.
- 27:37[SPEAKER_00]: Mostly that it was cool.
- 27:40[SPEAKER_00]: It's not terribly long.
- 27:41[SPEAKER_00]: It's for 45 to 50 minute episodes.
- 27:44[SPEAKER_00]: I watched the whole thing in one sitting.
- 27:46[SPEAKER_00]: You can get a seven day free child A and C plus if you don't want to pay for it.
- 27:51[SPEAKER_00]: So I
- 27:52[SPEAKER_00]: I did the trial and then immediately canceled it, just, you know, being totally candid, um, watch the whole thing and enjoy it.
- 27:59[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I, I will say, I'll just might want to take away.
- 28:01[SPEAKER_00]: You want to want to take away this?
- 28:03[SPEAKER_00]: Well, obviously, it was cool because like I was born in the early 80s and so I didn't get to experience a lot of this.
- 28:09[SPEAKER_00]: So I learned a lot of interesting things about like the team that I didn't really aware.
- 28:13[SPEAKER_00]: Like I wasn't really aware of like how deep the quarterback
- 28:21[SPEAKER_00]: Like, he was like, Walsh was literally like broating, Montana and young out from week to week at times.
- 28:26[SPEAKER_00]: Like, it was just kind of crazy.
- 28:28[SPEAKER_00]: And then like later in the season, Montana obviously took control of the team and ended up leading with the Super Bowl.
- 28:34[SPEAKER_00]: But like, Stevie, I think played in like four or five, maybe six, like several games that season.
- 28:39[SPEAKER_00]: Both as a starter and then just like coming in and using him as like a gadget guy, which is kind of funny.
- 28:44[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you think that was invented with like,
- 28:47[SPEAKER_00]: I cordil stewarders or something like that.
- 28:49[SPEAKER_00]: But no, Steve Young, I was doing that in the late 80s, so there we go.
- 28:54[SPEAKER_00]: But my other, so lots of cool things, lots of interesting to relive things that I have only heard stories about and didn't get to watch very much of as a young young kid.
- 29:04[SPEAKER_00]: But my other non-specific takeaway, or takeaway from the, from the doc that wasn't actually related to the 1980s, 40 dinners,
- 29:17[SPEAKER_00]: uh, please.
- 29:19[SPEAKER_00]: The Niners made a huge mistake not signing Tom Brady when he was a free agent.
- 29:23[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah.
- 29:23[SPEAKER_01]: 100%.
- 29:24[SPEAKER_01]: 100%.
- 29:25[SPEAKER_00]: That man would have been the most ecstatic human being on the face of the planet to win a Super Bowl for this franchise.
- 29:33[SPEAKER_00]: It was like pouring out of him in this documentary.
- 29:38[SPEAKER_00]: And the fact that Kyle Shannon was like, now we got Jimmy Garoppolo, is an absolute travesty because he would not have blocked anyone.
- 29:45[SPEAKER_00]: He would have been there for two years and then he would have been gridnaught in the sunset having won the 49 as Super Bowl and it would have been perfect.
- 29:53[SPEAKER_00]: Like it was a mistake, like bar none, like no doubt in my mind.
- 29:59[SPEAKER_01]: I cannot agree with you more.
- 30:03[SPEAKER_01]: That is probably one of the, I mean, outside of like being really pedantic about like play calls and the Super Bowl or whatever, like I think this one of the three biggest missteps that this like,
- 30:15[SPEAKER_01]: This like group of John Lynch and Kyle Shannon done is like it was like, if they, I think he reached out to them to the like he probably to come for very little money like oh yeah what he want like what he got like I just want to win a championship with my childhood team.
- 30:35[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know why, but that was the thing, like he's just like beaming with pride over the like being at these games and watching these players and he at one point he plays catch with Jerry Rice at the end of like it's like ah man like yeah, it's it's it's it's bad like it's really bad like I realize that Grapple was coming off a super bowl birth and everything but everybody on the planet knew that he didn't get them there like
- 31:04[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, it was, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a real big miss.
- 31:08[SPEAKER_00]: Like they would have had the six, like, I, what they have won in 2020.
- 31:13[SPEAKER_00]: Probably not because they got like devastated by injuries that season.
- 31:17[SPEAKER_00]: But I feel like.
- 31:19[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it changes the trajectory of a lot of things, right?
- 31:21[SPEAKER_00]: Cause in 20, I mean, you know, if they wait until 21, if they don't win until 21, they definitely don't get trailance.
- 31:28[SPEAKER_00]: Do they end up picking Brock Birdy event?
- 31:30[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, like it changes a lot of things, but man, they have a super bowl.
- 31:33[SPEAKER_01]: They'd have the six super bowl if you had already won in the sixth super bowl.
- 31:40[SPEAKER_01]: Oh man, yeah, it's a it's a it's a real miss.
- 31:45[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I it's a real miss.
- 31:46[SPEAKER_01]: I think they know to real miss too.
- 31:48[SPEAKER_01]: This isn't like when it does like, like it was a real like process was bad approach to yeah, I mean, it is what it is it's frustrating, but I agree with you.
- 31:59[SPEAKER_01]: Like I haven't even seen the thing, but I just I still agree with you that like,
- 32:04[SPEAKER_01]: When I like I know that with like in professional football, it's like professional sports in general, you oftentimes sort of like remove the whole like you were a fan of this team before, but like I don't know, I don't know if you saw Mike McCarthy's like,
- 32:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, just like intro press conference with the Steelers like people still can really care about these things and I like there's a real energy I feel like When players and coaches have that like personal affinity for the team that they've joined like It really like it changed it really changes sort of the vibe and I don't know like yeah, I
- 32:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, darn.
- 32:45[SPEAKER_01]: Now I'm sad.
- 32:46[SPEAKER_00]: Sorry, uh, yeah, I didn't mean to make any of these sad, but like that was my non 49ers from the 80s, specific takeaway was was definitely should it should assign Tom Brady like, uh, you know, imagine that like, then you're three super, you're six super wolves, but a one by Joe Montana, Steve Young and Tom Brady.
- 33:11[SPEAKER_00]: deal with that anybody like tell us what you got we got nothing we don't care that we might have been able to we probably wouldn't have arrived pretty high on that one for several seasons of course anyway all right well all that nonsense let's uh we got more things to talk about because there's been more news there's probably some things that you're thinking why haven't they talked about that yet but we're gonna get into that uh with the second
- 33:38[SPEAKER_00]: from underdog fantasy.
- 33:40[SPEAKER_00]: Fast breaks, buzzer beaters, and block parties are back, and underdog is the best place to get in on all the action.
- 33:47[SPEAKER_00]: Playing on underdog is easy.
- 33:48[SPEAKER_00]: Just pick whether your favorite players will go higher or lower on stats like points, rebounds, steals, and more get your picks right, and you could win up to 5,000 times your cash.
- 33:58[SPEAKER_00]: And we'll send it over to Oksha's to tell us a little bit about its experience using the underdog fantasy app.
- 34:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, everyone.
- 34:05[SPEAKER_01]: You know, like I've mentioned whenever we talk about football, I really enjoyed it.
- 34:10[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's a lot of fun.
- 34:12[SPEAKER_01]: There's really intuitive to use.
- 34:14[SPEAKER_01]: And I think one of the things I really like about it is just the sheer number of sports you have access to.
- 34:19[SPEAKER_01]: We've we've entered what I like near the doldrums of sports.
- 34:25[SPEAKER_01]: I think just the reality for a lot of people that you know, you don't have.
- 34:30[SPEAKER_01]: Like, especially with the Olympics, you're going on.
- 34:32[SPEAKER_01]: You don't have the NHL, that Olympic school.
- 34:34[SPEAKER_01]: But you don't have the NHL.
- 34:36[SPEAKER_01]: It's just an NBA, like spring training is just started.
- 34:40[SPEAKER_01]: So like, I think with underdog, it's really, really easy to like just find ways to get excited and into sort of the sports that are going on.
- 34:51[SPEAKER_01]: It's super intuitive, like I say.
- 34:53[SPEAKER_01]: It's a great way to sort of peak your interests, so to speak.
- 34:57[SPEAKER_01]: It is what's happening.
- 34:58[SPEAKER_01]: in the sports world.
- 35:00[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm a big fan of it.
- 35:01[SPEAKER_01]: I really like you just open it up.
- 35:03[SPEAKER_01]: This sports right there.
- 35:04[SPEAKER_01]: You can click the statue want.
- 35:05[SPEAKER_01]: You can build your build out what you want to do.
- 35:09[SPEAKER_01]: And like super intuitive, super easy to use.
- 35:11[SPEAKER_01]: So you can download the app today and use promo code noise to score $75 in bonus entries.
- 35:17[SPEAKER_01]: When you play your first five dollars, that's promo code noise.
- 35:21[SPEAKER_01]: Underdog makes picks with money.
- 35:23[SPEAKER_01]: Must be 18 years older and I
- 35:26[SPEAKER_01]: And the Braskin ITA is all in Colorado for some games.
- 35:29[SPEAKER_01]: When your nearest older near zone of Massachusetts in a Virginia and present in the state where an arc of fantasy operates, turns up while I consume with your play called 100.
- 35:36[SPEAKER_01]: My reset or visit www.insupegamewith.org and Arizona, you can call 1-800 next step, 1-800-639-873 or text next step to 5342.
- 35:46[SPEAKER_01]: And New York called the 27th of April, and 1-800-718, open wire, takes hope of 9, 467-369.
- 35:53[SPEAKER_00]: All right, we got two other things that we need to talk about that are pretty big, um, fairly important.
- 35:59[SPEAKER_00]: We'll start with, uh, the one that is, um, not, I don't understand this exercise.
- 36:06[SPEAKER_00]: They do this every year where they hire, they have to,
- 36:09[SPEAKER_00]: higher somebody and it's like everyone knows that it's happened, but the team is not officially announced it and I do not understand this.
- 36:16[SPEAKER_00]: It's the strangest thing.
- 36:17[SPEAKER_00]: But all indications seem to be that Rahim Morris will be the 49ers next defense of coordinator.
- 36:25[SPEAKER_00]: after Robert Sala departed to take over as the headman with the tendency Titans.
- 36:31[SPEAKER_00]: Interestingly enough, it seems as if Sala will be taking Gus Bradley with him, who did not get the 49ers defensive coordinator job, which is interesting because I think pretty much everybody anticipated that that was what was going to happen, right?
- 36:48[SPEAKER_00]: Gus Bradley came in on
- 36:53[SPEAKER_00]: for the defense, I guess.
- 36:54[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know exactly what this title was.
- 36:55[SPEAKER_00]: And the anticipation was, Robert Sallow will be here and he'll probably leave after a year and Gus Bradley will just step right into the role.
- 37:01[SPEAKER_00]: And then I know he's going to have a different direction.
- 37:04[SPEAKER_00]: For him, Morris and Kyle Shanahan go way back.
- 37:07[SPEAKER_00]: They've been worked together in several places throughout their careers.
- 37:16[SPEAKER_00]: It will be interesting to see if this is actually going to be a departure from what the 49ers have done and whether or not Janna Handfield is comfortable with more is just being like go do your thing and let the defense run.
- 37:29[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't know, thoughts on this higher access.
- 37:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know, initially I was quite a big fan, but I've sort of sowered on it a little bit.
- 37:42[SPEAKER_01]: And I think the reason why is, or he Morris has like a fairly strong reputation, I would say, but like if you take a look at like his teams,
- 37:54[SPEAKER_01]: he hasn't really had like dominant defenses.
- 37:58[SPEAKER_01]: Like they were pretty good.
- 37:59[SPEAKER_01]: I think the one exception is you look back to Super Bowl winning Ram's defense.
- 38:03[SPEAKER_01]: But that defense was particularly like qualified in having gone Jalen Ramsey and Aaron Donald were, you know, like maybe that means like with Nick Bosa and Fred Warner things are different.
- 38:16[SPEAKER_01]: But I don't know, like I
- 38:18[SPEAKER_01]: have sort of mentioned on the podcast that Jim Schwartz was the guy I was most interested in, Jim Schwartz is now available on the market.
- 38:26[SPEAKER_01]: So I would have liked Jim Schwartz was the defense coordinator, however, like putting that aside, I do think there's a, it's interesting because I do think Morris is going to change the schema lot.
- 38:41[SPEAKER_01]: I think the reality is,
- 38:44[SPEAKER_01]: There's no way they could have done the Steve Wilkes like scenario and essentially like not understood like like you do Steve Wilkes and it doesn't work out for the reason you think that I think you have to realize either you let a coach like coach the defense the way he wants to coach it or you get someone who has the scheme you want to run and I just I can imagine shanahan after what seemed to be his biggest frustration with sorenson.
- 39:14[SPEAKER_01]: was sort of this like handholding those necessary and this inability to adapt that he's gonna like be really hands on or he more is which I think gives more is a lot of leeway.
- 39:26[SPEAKER_01]: Is that gonna be good or bad?
- 39:28[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, that's the part I'm like excited to see.
- 39:31[SPEAKER_01]: I think it'll be different.
- 39:33[SPEAKER_01]: I think you're gonna get one of the biggest things I think you're gonna get is you're gonna get more people up on the line of scrimmage.
- 39:40[SPEAKER_01]: you probably are going to get a little more aggressive secondary play, but so much of the 49ers defense is unique because of two guys, really in particular.
- 39:51[SPEAKER_01]: Like, schematically, I don't actually know if the 49ers have been unique or like particularly like novels since like
- 40:03[SPEAKER_01]: You have the best middle line background football in like one of the best ad pressures in football.
- 40:09[SPEAKER_01]: And I think what they do is they just change the way defensive coordinators can like run their defenses.
- 40:15[SPEAKER_01]: I think.
- 40:17[SPEAKER_01]: What good defense coordinators for the 49ers have done is they've realized particularly with Fred Warner that he gives you the opportunity to do something different and like change the way that you like call the game and I think what bad defense coordinators do, not bad, less opportunistic, I don't know, I don't know what the right phrase you wanna use here is that they essentially treat Fred as if he's just another like middle linebacker.
- 40:45[SPEAKER_01]: And so I like that's the real thing I'm going to want to see as how is Fred Warner utilized because I think that's going to decide so much of whether or not this works out.
- 40:57[SPEAKER_01]: But I mean, I'm excited.
- 40:59[SPEAKER_01]: He's a well-respected name.
- 41:01[SPEAKER_01]: And I think if you had to hire like a defensive coordinator, he's not the worst guy to end up with.
- 41:09[SPEAKER_01]: But I think there are a lot of questions right now
- 41:16[SPEAKER_01]: how exactly is this going to look like and I don't know if anyone really knows so it's a real question mark and I think we're not going to find out until we get towards like the three agency and see who the miners are bringing in on defense to augment the team.
- 41:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, um I think that's all right and fair.
- 41:36[SPEAKER_00]: Um
- 41:38[SPEAKER_00]: It's to be honest with you, I think the scheme could use a shake up.
- 41:43[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not sure that this, you know, Seattle...
- 41:49[SPEAKER_00]: cover to defensive, like, to high, it's double high, safety, it's all that all that nonsense, like, it's fine, but it also, it just feels like it could use some jazz enough.
- 42:02[SPEAKER_01]: So, I mean, Seattle doesn't even run, right, quote and quote Seattle, defense, any race.
- 42:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, I mean, so, yeah, I mean, I think team, it's been long enough.
- 42:13[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, what would the, well, that was,
- 42:15[SPEAKER_00]: 15 years ago almost when they were doing that like the early days of that like it's it's not
- 42:23[SPEAKER_00]: It's not like catching anybody by its price anymore.
- 42:26[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it still can be effective and that's sort of thing, but and it still needs, you know, any scheme needs quality players to get it done, I think that's obvious, but the good news, as you said, is that Raheem Morris has two pretty good ones, and then some solid pieces and other places, and it will be,
- 42:47[SPEAKER_00]: up to him to build the rest of this defense.
- 42:50[SPEAKER_00]: The defense blind is going to need pretty massive rebuilding, not only between, and they're standing, you know, there's a lot of players on this defensive line that are going to be gone.
- 43:00[SPEAKER_00]: Hopefully Bosa and Michael Williams will be back and ready to go early in the season if not to start it.
- 43:06[SPEAKER_00]: If Red Warner will definitely be back at the start of the season because he was ready to play, you know, three weeks ago.
- 43:11[SPEAKER_00]: So,
- 43:13[SPEAKER_00]: You know, at least in his mind, but he, yeah, I think a little shake up would be good, like, even if it's not like a complete departure, I hope that part of this move is about shanahan going, I know this guy, I trust this guy, I've seen him do good work and I'm going to let him do it and not only would that be great for Kyle shanahan because it will not like take something off its plate as you talked about like the
- 43:39[SPEAKER_00]: Nick Sorenson season in the Steve Wilkes season.
- 43:41[SPEAKER_00]: It's just like, I think the constant need to I'm going to use the word babysit, which is not exactly right, but but with Sorenson, I think it really was.
- 43:52[SPEAKER_00]: With Wilkes, I think it was more like, hey, what are you doing?
- 43:55[SPEAKER_00]: Like, are you doing the thing I want you to do?
- 43:57[SPEAKER_00]: I think that probably taught him the lesson of I need to find a guy that I trust and he obviously trusts
- 44:05[SPEAKER_00]: Because he was a guy that he worked with for a long time, and I think that's the same similar relationship we're going to see here.
- 44:10[SPEAKER_00]: I think there's a lot of Reemores are very similarly kind of, you know, a big As a similar, not the same personality, but a lot of that same similar personality to Solion that way too, which is I think good because that It balances out Shanahan's More like stoic
- 44:33[SPEAKER_00]: point of view on the early like not stoic, but he's a little more like not as gregarious as Robert Sol is and it's hard for most people to be, but I think that'll be good.
- 44:44[SPEAKER_00]: The balance of that.
- 44:45[SPEAKER_00]: So, as you said, it's a wait and see kind of thing to really know exactly what this is going to be, but it I think the change could be good.
- 44:53[SPEAKER_00]: And I'd be good for two reasons, one because of the the change
- 44:59[SPEAKER_00]: needs, I think it needs to be had, like the system needs to shake up, but also just like it would show that Shanna Han is not so, like, deathly tied to this one way of playing defense, and it's just like we can, we can be multiple if we need to.
- 45:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so totally agree.
- 45:17[SPEAKER_01]: One thing that I did sort of was thinking about when you were talking about, like sort of what would be the changes.
- 45:23[SPEAKER_01]: I think one thing for sure that's going to happen is the 49ers are going to get and spend a decent bit of money or a hydrific on a safety.
- 45:33[SPEAKER_01]: Like the one thing I'm not going to pretend like this is my idea of
- 45:39[SPEAKER_01]: I think I saw this from either in Matt Barrel's or Victor for on the athletic and like they're they basically argued that The biggest thing where he Morris has always had and his defenses as he's had like a playmaking sort of safety like player like in
- 45:57[SPEAKER_01]: Atlanta, he had Xavier Wast, the rookie who was a ball hockey, Jesse Bades, like that's that is something that matters to his defense, that is not something the 49ers have cared much at all about really so far.
- 46:11[SPEAKER_01]: So I think that's going to be a major difference for sure.
- 46:15[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't know, like I agree with you.
- 46:17[SPEAKER_01]: I think, um,
- 46:18[SPEAKER_01]: I think the scheme's old.
- 46:20[SPEAKER_01]: I really do.
- 46:20[SPEAKER_01]: I think solid did a fine job.
- 46:23[SPEAKER_01]: I think solid's one year here return.
- 46:26[SPEAKER_01]: It's hard to get gauge because the defense was not super talented to begin with and then basically lost all its teeth like within five weeks.
- 46:35[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 46:35[SPEAKER_01]: Like, and then like the fact that they were doing what they did, I thought was admirable, but no one would call it like a great
- 46:47[SPEAKER_01]: But it's hard to judge because you know and we've we've had discussions about this in our Niner Noes Slack channel like after Werner and Bosa and like Michael Williams were out Honestly like that defense talent was probably like a bottom five 10 defense into NFL if that like there was just not a lot there
- 47:12[SPEAKER_01]: And the fact that they were playing, as well as they were, it was a testament to sort of coaching.
- 47:17[SPEAKER_01]: But, you could definitely take you so far.
- 47:21[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, like, I expect the difference.
- 47:25[SPEAKER_01]: If the difference is not better next year, that's a real problem because it's going to be healthier and more talented next year.
- 47:32[SPEAKER_01]: So, I don't know, I'm excited.
- 47:33[SPEAKER_01]: I am.
- 47:35[SPEAKER_01]: I think going back to how we started off the podcast, talking about like the Super Bowl, right?
- 47:43[SPEAKER_01]: Like Seattle's defense got after you.
- 47:48[SPEAKER_01]: Like that defense attacked.
- 47:51[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't think the 49ers have attacked on defense in a while.
- 47:56[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that's something that's missing.
- 47:58[SPEAKER_01]: And hopefully Morris can bring that aggression back to this defense.
- 48:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that would be good.
- 48:04[SPEAKER_00]: And I think, like you said, from last year, it's hard to gauge anything because the group was so injured and probably only a middle of the packed defense to start, right?
- 48:18[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, this season will be really important to see.
- 48:22[SPEAKER_00]: Um, have this thing shake out and I would not be at all surprised to see, um, they're going to have some money to spend this off season.
- 48:29[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I think something, some estimates, something like $80 million against the cap, uh, that they'll have available with lots of money coming off the brain and I look stuff.
- 48:40[SPEAKER_00]: Well, the dead money that's going off the books after this season or, yeah, once the season resets in just 2026.
- 48:50[SPEAKER_00]: So I have some money to spend.
- 48:52[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, they're going to have to dull that out between offense and defense, but the defense is going to need some some work.
- 49:00[SPEAKER_00]: And some of it is just going to be like the things we talked about was like internal upgrades by getting injured players back will be helpful.
- 49:08[SPEAKER_00]: But I'm excited.
- 49:11[SPEAKER_00]: I'm excited too.
- 49:11[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's going to be good and I think I hope that this is a sign of shanning and being like it's yours man like I don't like obviously.
- 49:20[SPEAKER_00]: Do what I can to help but it's your your your.
- 49:26[SPEAKER_00]: you're in charge of that and I don't want to.
- 49:29[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to have to run that if I as much as I don't if I don't have to.
- 49:33[SPEAKER_00]: So all right.
- 49:35[SPEAKER_00]: So the last thing we're going to talk about in this episode is, well, the international game, it was announced.
- 49:44[SPEAKER_00]: before the Super Bowl, yeah, that the foreign miners had been selected as the visiting team for a neutral site gain in Melbourne, Australia hosted by the Los Angeles Rams, who are so scared of the foreign miners taking over their actual stadium, they're going 16 hours away
- 50:13[SPEAKER_00]: Very interesting.
- 50:14[SPEAKER_00]: It'll be the first time that the NFL's been played in Australia.
- 50:18[SPEAKER_00]: So pretty cool for our guy, Jeremy Wolfart, who we'll talk to.
- 50:23[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sure at some point leading up to the draft and we'll also get his feelings on this particular game.
- 50:28[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sure.
- 50:32[SPEAKER_00]: But it's pretty cool, but also like, that's,
- 50:36[SPEAKER_00]: crazy flight.
- 50:37[SPEAKER_00]: It seems I saw something today.
- 50:40[SPEAKER_00]: There's no actual confirmation of this obviously until the schedule comes out in like three months.
- 50:48[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, they might confirm it a little bit early on this particular situation, but this has got to be a week one game, right?
- 50:56[SPEAKER_00]: Actually, that's like there's no way they can just plot this thing in the middle of the season.
- 50:59[SPEAKER_00]: It just doesn't
- 51:02[SPEAKER_01]: Like, week one Friday, yeah, Saturday, 100%.
- 51:06[SPEAKER_01]: Like, it's, I mean, the travel loan puts you at a disadvantage.
- 51:13[SPEAKER_01]: Just coming back, going there, it's fine.
- 51:15[SPEAKER_01]: Just starting off the season, coming back, I mean, like.
- 51:19[SPEAKER_00]: And then yeah, it's got to be, it's got to be they play like Friday night.
- 51:23[SPEAKER_00]: And then they have like Sunday night football or Monday night football.
- 51:26[SPEAKER_01]: I'm thinking, I think, honestly,
- 51:30[SPEAKER_01]: You know, then I thought it was not big on like equity when it comes to scheduling, but what I think you put the Niners in the Rams on a modern day night double header, I think after that it's just it's unprecedented the amount of travel to do.
- 51:45[SPEAKER_01]: I so one thing I think is interesting and like, you know, I've nothing to verify this, but.
- 51:52[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just going off vibes here.
- 51:54[SPEAKER_01]: So the ramps have the marketing rights to Australia.
- 51:57[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know what that means in a Phil parlance, but they have them.
- 52:01[SPEAKER_01]: But I really do feel like that's a market that the 49ers have a pretty good, like, foothold then.
- 52:08[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe it's because of Jeremy, yeah.
- 52:11[SPEAKER_01]: And so I assume that that's like, most pants, but I'll be interested.
- 52:17[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, nobody really interested in seeing what life
- 52:19[SPEAKER_01]: That game looks like when it gets played.
- 52:23[SPEAKER_01]: I think like if you look at some of these like a broad games People show up regardless because the NFL is showing up early Maybe the only time ever but I'll be really excited to see what the What the split is It would be the funniest thing ever if the Rams.
- 52:46[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I was kind of joking
- 52:48[SPEAKER_00]: about the so if I think about the so if I say anything but it's also kind of not a joke like it's been like since they moved there it's been pretty much like the Niners have taken over that place every time they've gone and it would be hilarious if they flew 8000 miles or whatever it is and then it still happens in Australia and they're still like overwhelmed by foreign Niners fans for whatever reason that would just be like objectively hilarious to me.
- 53:15[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know why it would just be funny.
- 53:18[SPEAKER_01]: Oh yeah, yeah, so fun.
- 53:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but I mean, I certainly agree, like it has to be week one.
- 53:27[SPEAKER_00]: I know the Super Bowl champions get that Thursday night game, but let's be honest, the NFL is trying to figure out ways to play football every day of the week.
- 53:38[SPEAKER_00]: So there's no reason they couldn't play the game because the other thing you gotta keep in mind
- 53:46[SPEAKER_00]: almost a full day difference time wise or it's the opposite right so whatever it's like I guess depends on what part of Australia they're in but but it's a big a big time difference so they're gonna have to play the game.
- 54:01[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know how it would work like they'd play probably on Friday night in the in the US right but they'd actually be it actually be
- 54:15[SPEAKER_00]: and then they'd have to come back.
- 54:17[SPEAKER_00]: And I think, yeah, I think the Namanini double header would be an interesting idea.
- 54:22[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, the main issue there would be the play to probably two West Coast Monday night games, which would be a little impressive.
- 54:29[SPEAKER_00]: Like the way they've usually done that, that Monday and a double header is they've had the late game be a West Coast game.
- 54:37[SPEAKER_00]: and they're early in the earlier game via an East Coast game, but they're gonna have to suck it up, like this is a decision that they made.
- 54:42[SPEAKER_00]: Cause either way, if you make it like Sunday night and one team gets Sunday night, one team gets Monday night, then one of those teams is getting a little shafted.
- 54:51[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that's a good pretty good solution.
- 54:53[SPEAKER_00]: And then they then they have a little bit of a short week, but that's probably the best way to handle this, I would think.
- 55:00[SPEAKER_00]: So NFL schedulers, you should listen to us.
- 55:07[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 55:08[SPEAKER_00]: Though I care if it's the late game or not, I don't do it or we got to do it, but make it happen.
- 55:13[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, then the other part of this is, and I know Jed York sort of alluded to this, I think Alguido was talking
- 55:22[SPEAKER_00]: to Matt Meoko and he alluded to this as well that the Australian Australia game is not the only game international game that they're likely to play this season and it appears there's not been again not no official confirmation from the league but there has been some
- 55:42[SPEAKER_00]: some journalism floating around from people in Mexico that the 49ers are going to be returning to Mexican City.
- 55:51[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, that stadium has been under renovation for the last couple of seasons.
- 55:55[SPEAKER_00]: The 49ers and Cardinals play there.
- 55:58[SPEAKER_00]: Is it three years ago, four years ago?
- 56:00[SPEAKER_00]: It's been a while.
- 56:01[SPEAKER_00]: Another renovation took a long time.
- 56:03[SPEAKER_00]: I want to say three years ago.
- 56:04[SPEAKER_00]: Is that's on right?
- 56:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think so.
- 56:07[SPEAKER_01]: So that's it.
- 56:11[SPEAKER_01]: That game was on our knocks for the Cardinals.
- 56:16[SPEAKER_01]: And that's one of my favorite clips.
- 56:19[SPEAKER_00]: They got like boat race, right?
- 56:21[SPEAKER_01]: And so the preview for that game on Heartknocks is hilarious, because it's just these like,
- 56:29[SPEAKER_01]: coaches talking basically like about like big bad players it's so funny like you just see like them be like 23 man you've got to watch out for him 19 he's a beast 85 three guys to the ball then you get to the game and it's just they don't do any of the things it's so demoral I say further cardinal so anyway if anyone if anyone wants a little nanners pick pick me up
- 56:59[SPEAKER_01]: highly recommend watching that hard knocks episode from the season air zone to hand.
- 57:05[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, um, they've had a rather poor run of things recently haven't they?
- 57:10[SPEAKER_00]: Um, but yeah, so this would be a niner's home game.
- 57:14[SPEAKER_00]: Um, so the way that it works with the 17 games is obviously that's an uneven number.
- 57:18[SPEAKER_00]: So they, they, the league flips back and forth between which, which divisions get nine home games, which division gets eight home games.
- 57:27[SPEAKER_00]: Now the, the weird part is is because that this whole like international,
- 57:31[SPEAKER_00]: push.
- 57:32[SPEAKER_00]: There have it.
- 57:33[SPEAKER_00]: Is it 16 the number of international games are playing next year?
- 57:36[SPEAKER_00]: Is that sound right to you?
- 57:37[SPEAKER_00]: It's a lot.
- 57:38[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I think.
- 57:38[SPEAKER_00]: So I think.
- 57:39[SPEAKER_01]: Get one every week essentially now.
- 57:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 57:43[SPEAKER_00]: So it's I think 16 is the right number.
- 57:46[SPEAKER_00]: Um, so that means that.
- 57:48[SPEAKER_00]: Well, most of the teams that get an extra home game are probably
- 57:56[SPEAKER_00]: in favor of an international game.
- 57:58[SPEAKER_00]: And that's always the case.
- 57:59[SPEAKER_00]: Like I think the Jacksonville Jaguars are gonna play in England more frequently than other teams because their ownership is based in England and that sort of like there's some there's some caveats to some of this.
- 58:09[SPEAKER_00]: But it seems like the 49ers are bound for hosting that Mexico City game.
- 58:16[SPEAKER_00]: That's great because it, while they lose the gate, the gate receipts at Levi's Stadium and all that stuff, it really is like a 49er, like that is a 49ers.
- 58:26[SPEAKER_00]: territory right there.
- 58:28[SPEAKER_00]: It seems like December is what the time frame so they could possibly start the season in Australia have a regular most of the year.
- 58:39[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not crazy about like the December thing because that's starting to get to the end of the season and you don't want things like international travel.
- 58:48[SPEAKER_00]: to now it's it's a considerably shorter trip than good flying to Melbourne, but it's still impactful like they they play a high altitude and things like that and they're still and it's still a relative a decent trip probably it's obviously closer than flying to these coast for the
- 59:15[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I don't think they give up another division game.
- 59:17[SPEAKER_00]: So it'll be interesting to see what direction they go.
- 59:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I wonder if it'll be the the AFC team.
- 59:26[SPEAKER_01]: The actual one.
- 59:26[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, the extra team.
- 59:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 59:29[SPEAKER_00]: Who knows.
- 59:29[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 59:30[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 59:31[SPEAKER_00]: I imagine they want to find some kind of some way to make it.
- 59:38[SPEAKER_00]: some, you know, another team that might have some sort of international intrigue, um, that would probably be one direction they could go.
- 59:49[SPEAKER_00]: Um, it could also just be a doubt.
- 59:55[SPEAKER_00]: I doubt it will be a division of opponent.
- 59:57[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I don't think that's that's going to happen.
- 1:00:01[SPEAKER_01]: Um, it could be Dallas.
- 1:00:03[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, I don't think Dallas is on the list.
- 1:00:06[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if the Dallas is on their schedule.
- 1:00:08[SPEAKER_00]: Their home games, their home games are as follows.
- 1:00:10[SPEAKER_00]: They play the cardinals where I'm C Hawks, obviously.
- 1:00:12[SPEAKER_00]: Eagles commanders, Broncos, Raider.
- 1:00:15[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, Raiders, interesting.
- 1:00:16[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that would be.
- 1:00:18[SPEAKER_00]: And then Vikings and Dolphins.
- 1:00:19[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's going to be the Raiders.
- 1:00:21[SPEAKER_01]: I think so too.
- 1:00:22[SPEAKER_01]: That's, um, yeah, almost almost 100%.
- 1:00:26[SPEAKER_00]: That feels like
- 1:00:30[SPEAKER_00]: That feels like the most likely outcome to me.
- 1:00:32[SPEAKER_01]: That is also maybe the only other team that could like, I don't know, I don't have logistics for this, but it's a closer travel situation.
- 1:00:47[SPEAKER_01]: Also that when it comes to a fan, they split.
- 1:00:51[SPEAKER_01]: That's a team that could make that not ever loudly advantage.
- 1:01:01[SPEAKER_01]: after what happened when like in the preseason games.
- 1:01:04[SPEAKER_01]: It's not the worst thing in the world to not have a home game for other teams.
- 1:01:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like you can make sure that that soap.
- 1:01:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, honestly, yeah, man.
- 1:01:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that that does make sense.
- 1:01:16[SPEAKER_00]: I would be surprised if they take another division game away, right?
- 1:01:25[SPEAKER_00]: The only other team that that kind of makes me go interesting
- 1:01:31[SPEAKER_00]: No, but I think, but I think that's probably, that probably has like, you know, they probably want that for a Sunday night football or, you know, something like that.
- 1:01:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think, I think the Raiders, I don't think any of those other Broncos maybe, but probably not.
- 1:01:50[SPEAKER_00]: Who is the fifth?
- 1:01:51[SPEAKER_00]: Who is the extra team?
- 1:01:54[SPEAKER_00]: Is this the Dolphins?
- 1:01:54[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's the Dolphins.
- 1:01:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the Dolphins are the extra team.
- 1:01:57[SPEAKER_00]: So that's not happening.
- 1:02:01[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm with you.
- 1:02:02[SPEAKER_00]: I think the Raiders' Niners in December sometime in Mexico City makes a lot of sense.
- 1:02:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you'll remember that they went to Colorado, I think, for the week leading up to it to like get used to the
- 1:02:19[SPEAKER_00]: to the altitude last time.
- 1:02:22[SPEAKER_00]: So maybe that will happen again.
- 1:02:24[SPEAKER_00]: So all right.
- 1:02:26[SPEAKER_00]: Arxas, that is, that's all the news.
- 1:02:28[SPEAKER_00]: It's fit to print, do you have any, any final thoughts on all this?
- 1:02:33[SPEAKER_00]: We will obviously be throughout the season.
- 1:02:36[SPEAKER_00]: We'll start getting into,
- 1:02:38[SPEAKER_00]: Because here we are mid-February, and before we know it, it will be time for that everyone's favorite time of the year, the legal tantering period.
- 1:02:48[SPEAKER_00]: So we've got a couple of weeks to talk about reagency and what they can do.
- 1:02:54[SPEAKER_00]: And maybe some trade action that could go on, and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:02:59[SPEAKER_00]: But we'll do that in the next couple of weeks.
- 1:03:08[SPEAKER_00]: fun hodgepodge, but ultimately, good episode, I think.
- 1:03:15[SPEAKER_01]: Just that, you know, I think Robert, you gave our like, thanks at the end of the, like, I don't know, season recap, last episode, but I didn't get a chance to chime in.
- 1:03:28[SPEAKER_01]: So I'll just throw in my thanks to everyone who listens to the podcast.
- 1:03:33[SPEAKER_01]: It's a lot of fun to,
- 1:03:34[SPEAKER_01]: get on here and chat with you Robert about like the miners.
- 1:03:38[SPEAKER_01]: The episodes like these are really fun, it's nice to just sort of like go around and sort of, you know, talk about different things about the team that we find interesting, they're going down.
- 1:03:48[SPEAKER_01]: And it couldn't be possible without like everyone listening to here.
- 1:03:50[SPEAKER_01]: So thank you for listening.
- 1:03:53[SPEAKER_01]: I hope we're
- 1:03:55[SPEAKER_01]: you know, keeping you informed and giving you something interesting to chew on.
- 1:03:59[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, like Robert said, you know, the offseason means that there's a lot to talk about.
- 1:04:04[SPEAKER_01]: It's a big one.
- 1:04:05[SPEAKER_01]: I think until like, I don't know, come full circle in this episode.
- 1:04:11[SPEAKER_01]: And something that we kind of stress repeatedly.
- 1:04:15[SPEAKER_01]: Seattle winning the Super Bowl just adds pressure to this team to like figure it out and like take those next steps and I think it's going to be really exciting to see how exactly they gear up to, you know, try to win a win Super Bowl number six, but yeah, just thank everyone for listening in hopefully you tune in next time.
- 1:04:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, opportunity to do to the rams with the sea hox just to them next next year.
- 1:04:44[SPEAKER_00]: So that'd be cool.
- 1:04:45[SPEAKER_00]: All right, with that, I will say thanks to you as always for listening to this episode of the 9 or noise podcast part of the fancited podcast network.
