- 0:00Chapter 17 from the book of Jeremiah.
- 0:04Dear Lord, before we get started, we remind ourselves in
- 0:08second Timothy chapter 3 verse 16.
- 0:11All scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching,
- 0:15rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness so
- 0:20that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every
- 0:24good work. We ask that the Holy Spirit help
- 0:29us with this as we read through this chapter in Jesus name,
- 0:34Amen. This is the word of the Word
- 0:38that came to Jeremiah from the Lord.
- 0:40Go down to the Potter's house and there I will give you my
- 0:44message. Just starting out with that
- 0:47verse. Isn't it interesting, if you
- 0:50think about it, that this is how God starts speaking to Jeremiah?
- 0:55He just tells him this really strange message, like go to the
- 0:59Potter's house and I will give you my message.
- 1:04So isn't that just, it's so interesting.
- 1:06I, I think of how God communicates with people and he
- 1:12has his own way of communicating personally with each person.
- 1:15We see the different prophets in the Bible and how God
- 1:19communicated with them, sometimes through visions,
- 1:22sometimes through other people, sometimes directly like this.
- 1:28Like I can't imagine. And I know there are people who
- 1:30claim to get words from God like this today.
- 1:36And, and, and you know, according to testimonies that
- 1:41people have given, God still does this sort of thing.
- 1:46Like what we read, we've read about with Peter where he was up
- 1:51on a rooftop and then he received the word of God about
- 1:56clean and unclean foods. And he was told to meet with a
- 2:00certain person at the same time God was communicating with that
- 2:04person. And the two of them didn't know
- 2:06one another that that person was going to meet Peter.
- 2:11So God like arranges meetings between people that don't even
- 2:16know one another. And that's we see that in
- 2:19Scripture. And so again, this is just and
- 2:22like I said, there are still people today who have had this
- 2:27experience. So God is still communicating
- 2:31with people and he's still doing these kinds of amazing things
- 2:36when we are close to him, when people are close to him, or when
- 2:42God is has a purpose for a person, He will make that clear,
- 2:47just like he's making it for Jeremiah.
- 2:49He, you know, told Jeremiah, I formed you in the womb.
- 2:52I know every hair on your head. And God knows that about each of
- 2:57us. And God does have a plan and a
- 2:59purpose. And God had a specific purpose
- 3:03for Jeremiah. So the other thing about the way
- 3:08God said this, go down to the Potter's house and there I will
- 3:10give you my message. That's also a testing of
- 3:15Jeremiah. Is he going to respond to God or
- 3:17is he going to blow it off and just say, I don't feel like
- 3:20going down to the Potter's house, but he's obedient to God.
- 3:24And that's really important too, that when God communicates that
- 3:28we are obedient to him. And knowing if it's God's voice
- 3:35is another thing that I think over time maybe people find out
- 3:40when when good things happen as a result of following what you
- 3:45think might be God's word. And then also just knowing that
- 3:51whatever it is that it aligns with, it doesn't conflict with
- 3:56what's in Scripture, what we know about God through
- 3:59Scripture, like it doesn't change the way God would
- 4:02typically handle something, but just very interesting and, and
- 4:07something that we should all strive for to hear from God and
- 4:13to let God speak to us and be open to that and find the way
- 4:18that God communicates to us because he will communicate with
- 4:22every person. It, you know, it says in
- 4:24Scripture, if you seek him, you will find him.
- 4:28So continuing on in Scripture. So I went down to the Potter's
- 4:32house and saw him working at the wheel, but the pot he was
- 4:35shaping from the clay was marred in his hands.
- 4:39So the Potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as it as
- 4:44seemed best to him. Then the word of the Lord came
- 4:47to me. He said, Can I not do with you,
- 4:51Israel, as this Potter does, declares the Lord like clay in
- 4:57the hand of the Potter. So are you in my hand, Israel?
- 5:03If at any time I announce that a nation or Kingdom is to be
- 5:08uprooted, torn down and destroyed, and if that nation I
- 5:12warned repents of its evil, then I will relent and not inflict on
- 5:20it the disaster I had planned. So this is really something that
- 5:26we should be aware of because an A nation, I mean, we're all
- 5:32connected to a our own nations. If we see the nation being
- 5:37ungodly, then that should be a concern because we'd be in the
- 5:41same situation as Jeremiah. If we see the nation turning
- 5:46towards God, that's a good thing because as a nation, as this
- 5:50says, as a nation turns toward God, God could relent some of
- 5:55his judgment that's coming. And this again is evidence of
- 6:00God's mercy, like justice would be to to destroy because the
- 6:07wages of sin is death. So that's like, if you go by the
- 6:12law, that's what would happen. Anybody who is disobedient, it
- 6:17would be death. But because God is merciful, he
- 6:22doesn't just automatically go to that.
- 6:24And he gives us the opportunity to repent, to change our ways,
- 6:30to seek Him, to stop doing evil, to ask for forgiveness, to turn
- 6:37to Him. That's what repentance really
- 6:39is, is turning away from the evil acts, the evil sin, the
- 6:44things that God doesn't approve of, and turning towards God for
- 6:49his help and his power to overcome the sin.
- 6:56So continuing in the Scripture. And if at another time I
- 6:59announce that a nation or Kingdom is to be built up and
- 7:03planted, and if it does evil in my sight and does not obey me,
- 7:10then I will reconsider the good I had intended to do for it.
- 7:16So here's another thing that we can all learn is that if we
- 7:20follow God and if we are obedient to God, he has good
- 7:26planned for us. If we turn away from God and we
- 7:31sin against God, we may not get the things that God had planned
- 7:37for us. God is a good God.
- 7:40He is the giver of good gifts. And we bring about stuff on
- 7:44ourselves when we turn away from God, when we disobey God, when
- 7:50we don't live the way God wants us to.
- 7:54We don't even know what God had planned.
- 7:58Maybe he was about to do something and then we, you know,
- 8:02offend him by disobeying him. And then he's like, well, I
- 8:07don't think I'm going to do that anymore because look what
- 8:09they're doing. So pretty much everything that
- 8:13comes upon us seems like is, you know, is justified, I guess,
- 8:19because we're all sinners. And so anything that does happen
- 8:24to us is justified in that way. But at the same time, God is
- 8:31also so merciful because the what our thoughts and our minds
- 8:37and our hearts, our desires, what we desire, God recognizes
- 8:41that. And when we desire to be close
- 8:43to him, God has mercy. And sometimes he blesses people
- 8:47in this life. And sometimes there is a promise
- 8:50in the eternal Kingdom where a person will be blessed.
- 8:54But I have not seen anywhere in Scripture where God does not
- 8:59reward people for doing good. So it may not come as we maybe
- 9:07want it to be in this life, but there is a promise.
- 9:10This is a promise that I see from God in all Scripture is
- 9:14that when you are obedient to Him, when you show love to Him,
- 9:18when you show love to others, that God sees that, He
- 9:21recognizes that and there will be a reward.
- 9:25We don't do it for the reward, but it should be comforting to
- 9:30know that even if things are not perfect in our lives right now,
- 9:33that God sees it. God knows the good that's being
- 9:36done. And God will reward at some
- 9:39point, and we can just trust in Him and believe that He will.
- 9:46He will make everything right. He, He's a God of justice.
- 9:50So if we are truly doing good things and having bad things
- 9:54come against us, it's only temporary and it will not be
- 9:58that way forever. We could see that Jeremiah
- 10:02experienced that too. So going back to verse 11.
- 10:07Now therefore, say to the people of Judah and those living in
- 10:10Jerusalem, this is what the Lord says, look, I am preparing a
- 10:15disaster for you and devising a plan against you.
- 10:20So God's talking to the people of Judah.
- 10:23These are His chosen people and He's telling them, hey, he's
- 10:28giving them a heads up, you know, through this prophet
- 10:32Jeremiah, he's telling them this is what's going to come about.
- 10:36Like how clear can you communicate?
- 10:38Like God is giving these people every opportunity to change the
- 10:45outcome. That's something you know, look
- 10:48at how loving that is, how God is.
- 10:54So turn from your evil ways, each one of you, and reform your
- 11:00ways and your actions. That's what repentance is.
- 11:04It's turning away from sin and changing, having a change of the
- 11:10way we live. But they will reply, it's no
- 11:15use. We will continue with our own
- 11:17plans. We will all follow the
- 11:20stubbornness of our evil hearts. So they don't listen.
- 11:26Their hearts are hardened to God.
- 11:27They want to do what they want to do.
- 11:30They want to stay in their sin. Their sin is causing judgment to
- 11:34come upon them. But instead of getting rid of
- 11:38the sin, they keep the sin and take on the judgment.
- 11:42And that's what we do in our lives too.
- 11:44When we stay in sin, we're just bringing judgement on ourselves.
- 11:49And we can't blame anybody else because it's just, you know,
- 11:54it's very clear in the Bible. This is what happens when you
- 11:57stay in sin. There will be consequences for
- 12:00it. And it's not good stuff, not
- 12:03good consequences. Therefore this is what the Lord
- 12:07said. Inquire among the nations who
- 12:10has ever heard anything like this?
- 12:12A most horrible thing has been done by virgin Israel.
- 12:17Does the snow of Lebanon ever vanish from its rocky slopes?
- 12:21Do its cool waters from distant sources ever stop flowing?
- 12:25Yet my people have forgotten me, they burn incense to worthless
- 12:31idols which made them stumble in their ways in the ancient paths.
- 12:38So this part makes me think about like this is like the same
- 12:44deception as from long ago about other things, other entities,
- 12:51other beings being God and not the true God, detracting from
- 12:59God with something that is not God and people that are
- 13:04worshiping it. We see that today with people
- 13:06like worshiping nature and honestly, anyone who is not
- 13:11worshiping the true God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
- 13:18So anybody who's not worshiping that God is worshiping something
- 13:22false some some other being. And the Bible is very clear
- 13:27about that. So today we because we have
- 13:30other religions, that means these other religions are
- 13:33worshipping a false God. There's only one creator.
- 13:40So they made them walk in byways, on roads not built up.
- 13:44Their land will be an object of horror and of lasting scorn.
- 13:49All who pass by will be appalled, and will shake their
- 13:52heads like a wind from the east. I will scatter them before their
- 13:56enemies. I will show them my back and not
- 14:00my face. In the day of their disaster,
- 14:04they said, Come, let us make plans against Jeremiah.
- 14:08For the teaching of the law by the priest will not cease, nor
- 14:13will counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophets.
- 14:17So come, let's attack him with our tongues and pay no attention
- 14:21to anything he says. So what Jeremiah is experiencing
- 14:26from them is verbal attacks. And they're ignoring him too.
- 14:31They're just going to speak about him and they're just going
- 14:34to ignore whatever he says. But that's not the wisest thing
- 14:38to do. But again, they are following
- 14:41their hearts. They're being deceived.
- 14:44They're in idolatry. And you know, the like we read
- 14:49at the beginning of this, actually, that's not at the
- 14:53beginning of this, but the word is like a, a sword and how it
- 14:58divides between the bone and the marrows and the joints.
- 15:01I, I read that the other day and I, I don't really recall the
- 15:05words of that verse, but that just came to mind where the word
- 15:10of God is very convicting and, and it's uncomfortable for
- 15:14people. It really like cuts and people
- 15:18don't want to hear it, but if they listen to it, they will
- 15:23benefit. They will benefit themselves and
- 15:26others around them when they obey God.
- 15:29Obedience to God is not an option.
- 15:31And for it's just so important to be in God's Word.
- 15:39So then it says, listen to me Lord, hear what my accusers are
- 15:43saying. Should good be repaid with evil?
- 15:47Yet they have dug a pit for me. Remember that I stood before you
- 15:52and spoke in their behalf to turn your wrath away from them.
- 15:57So Jeremiah's talking to God and he's like, what?
- 16:00But why are they doing this to me?
- 16:02I was trying to plead their case in front of you, and he was
- 16:06concerned about them. But now they are turning against
- 16:10him, and then Jeremiah is saying so.
- 16:14Give their children over to famine.
- 16:16Hand them over to the power of the sword.
- 16:18Let their wives be made childless, and widows.
- 16:21Let their men be put to death, their young men slain by the
- 16:25sword in battle. Let a cry be heard from their
- 16:27houses when you suddenly bring invaders against them.
- 16:30For they have dug a pit to capture me, and have hidden
- 16:34snares from my feet. But you, Lord, know all their
- 16:37plots to kill me. Do not forgive their crimes or
- 16:41blot out their sins from your sight.
- 16:43Let them be overthrown before you deal with them in the time
- 16:47of your anger. So this brings about a lot of
- 16:53thoughts and discussion. Is it right to pray for others
- 16:59to be harmed? So I'm going to go to that part
- 17:04of it and have this is from the study Bible.
- 17:07Is it right to pray for revenge? Now this is in the study Bible
- 17:16in the one I have it's it's in the psalms and a lot of the
- 17:19Psalms they do ask for the same thing.
- 17:21So I'm going to read this. Several Psalms call on God to
- 17:25take revenge on an enemy. Yet Jesus taught that we should
- 17:30love our enemies. Matthew chapter 5 and the
- 17:34apostle Paul wrote, Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but
- 17:39leave room for God's wrath. That's in Romans 12, verse 19.
- 17:44How then do we interpret Psalms that call a curse on the enemy?
- 17:50Several points can help to put this question into perspective.
- 17:54Number one for the psalmist cursing the wicked was a plea
- 17:58for God's justice more than a cry for personal revenge.
- 18:04They may have reasoned that sinners show contempt for God's
- 18:08honor when they cause the innocent to suffer.
- 18:12Since the psalmist could not tolerate the idea of God
- 18:16standing by permitting these wrongs to go unpunished, they
- 18:20begged for His justice and His wrath to be carried out.
- 18:25Number two through date. Though David asked God to show
- 18:29no mercy to the wicked like in Psalm 59 verse five, he himself
- 18:35showed mercy to the guilty several times when he could have
- 18:39taken revenge on them. To Saul in first Samuel chapter
- 18:4424 and chapter 26. To shimmy high in second Samuel
- 18:50chapter 16. To Absalom in Second Samuel
- 18:55chapter 18. In those cases, David left the
- 18:59judgement of these sinners in the hands of God the judge of
- 19:04the earth. And that referenced Psalm 94.
- 19:09For psalmist though they had the benefit, the psalmist, though
- 19:14the psalmist though they had the benefit of the Old Testament
- 19:18law, had not experienced the freedom and grace that God gave
- 19:22us through Christ. It is hardly fair to expect Old
- 19:27Testament people to act quote Christian before Jesus Christ
- 19:32even came. We should not pray for revenge
- 19:36like the psalmist. We should trust God to right the
- 19:40wrongs of this world and with Christ's help we can love and
- 19:45pray for those who mistreat us. So there's another verse that I
- 19:52think is very applicable here. And for people who have been
- 19:57wronged by other people, there's a few, a couple verses actually,
- 20:01it starts in Proverbs, which is, you know, pretty much the book
- 20:07of wisdom. So in Proverbs chapter 25, verse
- 20:1122, it says in doing this you will heap burning coals on his
- 20:17head and the Lord will reward you.
- 20:22So doing what? If your enemy is hungry, give
- 20:25him food to eat. If he is thirsty, give him water
- 20:30to drink. Now what my study Bible just
- 20:33said, they didn't have the Old Testament law, but they had
- 20:36Proverbs back then, and in Proverbs is teaching them to do
- 20:43exactly what Christ teaches. If your enemy is hungry, give
- 20:47him food to eat. If he is thirsty, give him water
- 20:51to drink. So in doing this, you will heap
- 20:55burning coals on his head and the Lord will reward you.
- 20:59So this is really again another part where my study Bible, it's
- 21:05great, but I also think there's when we really like pay
- 21:09attention to Scripture. It's always good to be LED
- 21:12somewhere, but then like double check it because in reality,
- 21:17people did have this Old Testament knowledge.
- 21:20I don't know when exactly the Proverbs.
- 21:22I'm going to go to the study Bible because it gives you an
- 21:24idea of when they were actually written.
- 21:27The proverbs were compiled and edited around 7:15 to 686 BC.
- 21:37So almost, you know, like, well, 700 years or more before Jesus
- 21:43was even born, this was being, this was compiled.
- 21:47This is the, the word of God. God doesn't change.
- 21:51So I, I've heard people before say, Oh, the God of the Old
- 21:54Testament is mean and revengeful and, and then Jesus is loving
- 21:58and kind. That is such a bad
- 22:01interpretation of Scripture. God is so merciful and loving
- 22:05even in the Old Testament, but he is also a God of justice and
- 22:10what the people in that say those things about Old and New
- 22:14Testament God, God is the same and they must be forgetting that
- 22:18Jesus will return one day and he's going to bring about
- 22:22justice. He came for the sinners.
- 22:25He came to wake everybody up and and then it's documented.
- 22:29So we all have the benefit of reading what Jesus said, but
- 22:34when he returns, he's not going to be easy going on the people.
- 22:40He is coming back for wrath. Now He is gathering the people
- 22:45who have, who obey him, you know who are believers who obey Him,
- 22:50and they will, they will not be subject to his wrath.
- 22:54But when he returns, there's going to be this period of wrath
- 22:57for all the people who are unrepentant, those who don't
- 23:00turn away from their sin. This is the same thing we're
- 23:03reading about in Jeremiah right now.
- 23:06Unrepentant people are going to reach reap judgment.
- 23:10Judgement is going to be brought on them.
- 23:14So let's go back to this burning coals thing about South.
- 23:19Paul reiterates this in Romans chapter 12 verse 20.
- 23:23It says, On the contrary, if your if your enemy is hungry,
- 23:27feed him. If he is thirsty, give him
- 23:29something to drink. In doing this, you will heap
- 23:32burning coals on his head. So Paul is repeating what was
- 23:37written in Proverbs, and then he says do not be overcome by evil,
- 23:42but overcome evil with good. So that brought about a question
- 23:48like, what's the significance of burning coals in the Bible?
- 23:53Like, that seems pretty harsh. Like if you're doing something
- 23:56good, but then there's going to be burning coals on somebody's
- 23:59head. And there was a time in my life
- 24:02where it was like, we're early in my Christian faith, I found
- 24:09this verse. And so I was like, OK, so
- 24:12anybody who's like evil, who's wronged me or whatever, I'm just
- 24:14going to pray for them because this will be like burning coals
- 24:17on their head. And so my motivation probably
- 24:20wasn't the best motivation for that.
- 24:23But I think that this explanation of it that is found
- 24:28with within gotquestions.org, you can search what is the
- 24:34significance of burning coals in the Bible?
- 24:36And it it ties all the scripture that we were just talking about
- 24:39together. So I'm going to read this
- 24:41because I think this is a really good explanation of how we can
- 24:46justify doing good things and the burning coals on somebody's
- 24:51head because this really helps it makes sense and ties it to
- 24:56truth that's found in the Bible. Burning coals are mentioned
- 25:01several times in scripture, usually referring to the literal
- 25:05red hot coals of a fire, like as in John 2921 verse nine.
- 25:12However, Proverbs 25, verses 21 through 22 has a reference to
- 25:18burning coals that is probably not literal.
- 25:21If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat.
- 25:24If he is thirsty, give him water to drink.
- 25:27In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head, and
- 25:32the Lord will reward you. That's always an interesting
- 25:35thing. So you will heap burning coals
- 25:37on his head, and the Lord will reward you for that.
- 25:41But Paul quotes this passage again in Romans 12/20.
- 25:46It is probably that neither passage is Speaking of literal
- 25:50coals. Paul's choice of this metaphor
- 25:53explained by the context of Romans 12.
- 25:57He is addressing the proper response of a Christian when
- 26:01treated wrongly. Verse 21 explains the idea of
- 26:05heaping burning coals on someone by saying do not be overcome by
- 26:10evil, but overcome evil with good.
- 26:15Anyone can return evil for evil, but when a Christian does so,
- 26:20the watching world sees nothing different about our lives.
- 26:25It is not even clear who is right and who is wrong when we
- 26:29respond the same way to the one who wronged us.
- 26:34But when we follow Jesus's instruction to love our enemies,
- 26:38found in Matthew chapter 5, verse 43, four, 344 and return
- 26:45good for evil, the contrast is stark.
- 26:49Our kind and gentle reaction to hatred spots spotlights the
- 26:55depravity of the one who treated us poorly and leaves the hurtful
- 27:01person alone in his or her hatefulness.
- 27:06Nothing the conscience of a hateful person like a soft,
- 27:11forgiving spirit. In the 1 he is wronged and
- 27:16that's a reference to Proverbs 15 verse one.
- 27:20The burning coals that are heaped on his head could be a
- 27:23reference to the burning shame he will feel as his conscience
- 27:28works upon him. Burning coals in the Bible also
- 27:33symbolize judgment, Psalm 140 verse 10, and spiritual
- 27:39purification. We can find that in Isaiah
- 27:42chapter 6 verse 6, Leviticus chapter 16 verse 12, God is
- 27:48compared often to fire and is described in terms that relate
- 27:55to fire's heat, brightness, and power.
- 27:59So another understanding of burning coals in Proverbs 2522
- 28:04is that our right response to those who do us harm allows
- 28:08God's own power and judgement to fall on that person.
- 28:14We must leave room for God's wrath.
- 28:17That's Romans 12/19 it says, which says, beloved, never
- 28:23avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God.
- 28:27For it is written, vengeance is mine.
- 28:30I will repay, says the Lord. So and wait for the vengeance
- 28:36God brings in his own time. When we relink relinquish to God
- 28:43our right to take revenge, we show faith in his justice.
- 28:50God will bring conviction upon the sinning heart.
- 28:55Responding the way Jesus did to his enemies allows the Brancoals
- 29:01in quotations of God's righteousness and justice to
- 29:06operate within the soul of the person and hopefully bring him
- 29:11or her to repentance. And that's second Peter chapter
- 29:173, verse 9. Then the Lord is not slow to
- 29:20fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient
- 29:25toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all
- 29:30should reach repentance. So again, this ultimately shows
- 29:34God's mercy and shows that God knows the person.
- 29:39He knows the thoughts, He knows the motives, He knows what's
- 29:42going on in the head of the person.
- 29:44God can judge that person fairly.
- 29:47We may not, we may not know all the facts around it.
- 29:52So when we leave it to God, we can trust that judgement will
- 29:56prevail at some point, whether it's something we get, we see,
- 30:00we are witnesses to, or it's something that happens eternally
- 30:06for them or are to them because of their unrepentants, or they
- 30:12repent and turn to God, which is really ultimately what God
- 30:15wants. And then we also have to think
- 30:17about this in terms of ourselves.
- 30:19We are not perfect. We are not good in front of God.
- 30:23There's many things that God could have been very harsh with
- 30:27us about in our lives, in all people's lives.
- 30:29Everybody has something. So we need to remember that that
- 30:33God didn't destroy us. If we're alive right now, we're
- 30:38still living. God's being merciful to us.
- 30:41He's allowing us to change our ways to be, you know, to conform
- 30:46to his commands, to obey him. So we have this time, we have
- 30:50this opportunity right now to obey God and there are blessings
- 30:54that come along with it. So that's pretty much the all
- 30:58that I have to add to this chapter, but there's still a few
- 31:01more questions and answers that are in the study guide, so I
- 31:04will read those and then conclude this.
- 31:07So chapter 18, what sort of wheel this Potter's wheel was
- 31:12this? This was a Potter's wheel which
- 31:14made which was made of either wood or stone and consisting of
- 31:18two discs, a lower disc turned by the Potter's foot and an
- 31:21upper disc attached to an axle to the lower disk.
- 31:27Clay placed on the upper disk could be shaped into round bowls
- 31:31or pots as it turned. Does God steal deal with entire
- 31:36nations? God rewards and judges
- 31:40individuals today, but nations also can benefit from His
- 31:46blessings or suffer under His judgement.
- 31:50When most citizens are wicked, God considers their nation to be
- 31:55wicked and vice versa. But no simple formula can tell
- 31:59us what to expect. Sometimes a righteous few may
- 32:03prevent God's judgement on a nation.
- 32:07Kind of like when Abraham prayed for a lot.
- 32:11Perhaps more often, as in Jeremiah's case, the righteous
- 32:15suffer with the nation, though they may receive spiritual
- 32:20rewards as individuals. So God always has a reward if
- 32:25they're suffering. You can know through God's
- 32:28history, through the history found in the Bible about God,
- 32:32through God's character, God rewards.
- 32:35If there is suffering, that suffering will be turned to a
- 32:38reward of some kind. That's just the goodness of God.
- 32:42So why does God seem to change his plans?
- 32:45God is not being capricious or indecisive when He changes his
- 32:48course of action. In fact, mercy is entirely
- 32:52consistent with his nature, which is why he promises to
- 32:56respond when people pray. His mercy, even in the face of
- 33:00Judah's deserved judgement, demonstrates his true character.
- 33:06Why did God call the people virgin Israel?
- 33:08This phrase showed how radically God's people had changed.
- 33:12Israel had once been pure and chosen by God.
- 33:16But Israel, that is, the people of Judah, for they were all that
- 33:20remained of the nation of Israel, had lost had, quote,
- 33:24lost her virginity by prostituting herself with other
- 33:27lovers. Jeremiah chapter 3 verses one
- 33:30through 3. Israel was unfaithful to the
- 33:33Lord, giving her love and affection to false gods and
- 33:38idols. Why would God show His back?
- 33:42This was a figurative way to say that God would not help the
- 33:45people out of their coming troubles.
- 33:47They would see him walking away from them instead of toward
- 33:51them, which is the same treatment they had given him.
- 33:55Why did Jeremiah react so vehemently to his accusers?
- 33:59Jeremiah had suffered tremendous internal distress because of his
- 34:04accusers. He had prayed that God would
- 34:06save them, but they returned his efforts with hatred.
- 34:10After all he'd done for them, they did all they could to hurt
- 34:15him. It is no wonder Jeremiah asked
- 34:18God to punish them. Did Israel persecute all its
- 34:23prophets? Israel persecuted many of its of
- 34:27its prophets. That's found in Matthew 23 and
- 34:31Luke Chapter 11, though not necessarily all of them.
- 34:36When it was necessary, God sent prophets to confront the people
- 34:40about their failures. So it was inevitable that
- 34:43prophets were unpopular and suffered persecution.
- 34:48Jeremiah seemed to suffer even more acutely than most because
- 34:53of his sensitive personality and his genuine concern for the
- 34:58accusers who despised him. Now that concludes chapter 18
- 35:04from the book of Jeremiah. Hope you come back for chapter
- 35:0719.
