- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for another episode of Learn German with Fexingo? Luna: Absolutely, Lucas. I've been practicing my fruits from last time. Apfel, Banane, Orange — got 'em. Lucas: Nice work. Today, we're moving to the vegetable aisle. We'll learn three common veggies in German. Luna: Oh, I love veggies. Let's do it. Lucas: First up: carrot. In German, it's die Karotte. Say it with me: die Karotte. Luna: Die Karotte. That's pretty close to English, right? Lucas: Exactly. Carrot, Karotte. Easy one. Let's hear it again: die Karotte. Luna: Die Karotte. Lucas: Good. Next: tomato. In German, die Tomate. Repeat: die Tomate. Luna: Die Tomate. That's almost the same too! Lucas: Yeah, German loves cognates. One more: cucumber. In German, die Gurke. Say it: die Gurke. Luna: Die Gurke. Hmm, that one's different. Gurke. I like it. Lucas: Now let's put them in a sentence you can use at a market. To say 'I would like a carrot,' you say: Ich möchte eine Karotte. Luna: Ich möchte eine Karotte. So 'eine' for feminine nouns? Lucas: Right. All three are feminine, so it's always eine. Try the tomato: Ich möchte eine Tomate. Luna: Ich möchte eine Tomate. Lucas: Perfect. And cucumber: Ich möchte eine Gurke. Luna: Ich möchte eine Gurke. That's a mouthful, but I got it. Lucas: Let's do a quick role-play. I'm a vendor at a market. You come up and say you want a carrot. Luna: Okay. Guten Tag. Ich möchte eine Karotte. Lucas: Sehr gut. Here's your carrot. Now say you want a tomato. Luna: Ich möchte eine Tomate. Lucas: Excellent. And a cucumber for good measure. Luna: Ich möchte eine Gurke. Lucas: You're ready for the vegetable stand. Let's review all six phrases one more time. First the words: die Karotte, die Tomate, die Gurke. Repeat after me. Luna: Die Karotte, die Tomate, die Gurke. Lucas: Now the sentences: Ich möchte eine Karotte, Ich möchte eine Tomate, Ich möchte eine Gurke. Luna: Ich möchte eine Karotte, Ich möchte eine Tomate, Ich möchte eine Gurke. Lucas: You did it. Remember, next time you're at a market, you can use these. And if you want an apple instead, you can say Ich möchte einen Apfel — because Apfel is masculine, so it's einen. Luna: Oh, right! So gender matters. Got it. Thanks, Lucas. Lucas: That's it for today. Practice these veggies until we meet again. Auf Wiedersehen! Luna: Tschüss! Bis zum nächsten Mal!
