• 5:18
Speaker 1: The house right is an ancient but fine and well
• 5:22
Speaker 1: preserved structure of the old homestead type. There is a porch,
• 5:27
Speaker 1: windows with vines, plants, et cetera, a cross back of stage,
• 5:32
Speaker 1: a fence with open gate centre at left, a small
• 5:38
Speaker 1: arbour or summer house on the edge of an orchard
• 5:41
Speaker 1: at back, a road leading to right and left beyond fence,
• 5:46
Speaker 1: and on flat the glimpse of rolling fields, a church spire,
• 5:51
Speaker 1: and the roofs of a few houses scattered in the distance.
• 5:56
Speaker 1: It is the afternoon of a day in the latter
• 5:59
Speaker 1: part of August. At rise, Aaron Flint is heard whistling
• 6:04
Speaker 1: off left upper entrance. Missus Brewster is discovered in hammock
• 6:10
Speaker 1: or chair in arba, left asleep, her book fallen to
• 6:14
Speaker 1: the ground enter. Aaron Flint left upper entrance beyond fence
• 6:21
Speaker 1: to gate center. Almost at the same moment, Lilian appears
• 6:26
Speaker 1: on porch of house. Aaron carries several letters sealed, addressed
• 6:31
Speaker 1: and stumped, a newspaper or two, and a good sized
• 6:36
Speaker 1: parcels post package of books addressed Lilian comes down to.
• 6:41
Speaker 2: Write center that the mail erin Let's see why a
• 6:46
  Speaker 2: lot ain't they?
• 6:48
Speaker 3: She takes letters from him, should say they was most awful.
• 6:53
Speaker 3: Missus Brewster, though, and a letter for her daughter. Seems
• 6:57
Speaker 3: to me tain't nothing but them around here one way
• 7:00
Speaker 3: or another. I wonder how much longer they gonna stay land.
• 7:05
  Speaker 3: I don't know.
• 7:06
Speaker 2: Looks like we got them saddled on to us for life.
• 7:09
Speaker 2: Been here since June, and here tis most September.
• 7:13
Speaker 1: She is closely inspectable.
• 7:15
Speaker 3: Let us tis wonder to me, Miss Newcomb, don't get
• 7:19
Speaker 3: tired of boarding them for nothing and having them putting
• 7:22
Speaker 3: on such airs and all, even if they are our
• 7:25
Speaker 3: own sister and niece. All fire cheeky I call.
• 7:29
Speaker 2: It, well, you know her easy as all get out.
• 7:33
Speaker 2: Guess I'm the one to do most of the kicking
• 7:35
Speaker 2: when you come right down to it. All the extra
• 7:38
Speaker 2: work they make with coffee took up to their rooms
• 7:40
Speaker 2: at night in the morning luncheon as they call it,
• 7:42
Speaker 2: about half past one, and dinner full meal, mind you,
• 7:46
Speaker 2: at seven at night, when it's most time for sensible
• 7:49
Speaker 2: folks to be going to bed. Keeps me up all ours.
• 7:52
Speaker 2: I must say, I'm getting pretty tired of it.
• 7:55
Speaker 3: I guess you'd be, and no wonder, But as you say,
• 7:59
Speaker 3: Miss this new come's that easy. She wouldn't say a word,
• 8:03
Speaker 3: even if they stay till Kingdom come. If there ever
• 8:07
Speaker 3: was a saint on earth, she's won.
• 8:10
Speaker 2: Well. Even saints get imposed on. But I suppose being saints,
• 8:14
Speaker 2: it's up to them not to find any fault even
• 8:17
Speaker 2: when it's rubbed in. For my part, I think even
• 8:20
Speaker 2: a saint ought to have a little gumption. That's more
• 8:23
  Speaker 2: books for her.
• 8:25
Speaker 3: Yep, some more of them, Sherlock Holmes detecative stories she's
• 8:29
Speaker 3: always reading. I reckon must be four or five here
• 8:33
Speaker 3: from the heft of the bundle.
• 8:36
Speaker 2: Well, it beats all the amount of that trash. She does,
• 8:38
Speaker 2: read them, terrible yarns, all about murders and mysteries land.
• 8:43
Speaker 2: I should think she'd be so full of murder clues
• 8:46
Speaker 2: and everything, and she couldn't sleep nights. They'd give me
• 8:48
Speaker 2: the creeps if I was to read them the way
• 8:50
  Speaker 2: she does.
• 8:51
Speaker 3: Oh, I don't know. I sort of like them myself.
• 8:56
Speaker 3: Miss Newcomb lent me a few, aren't They certainly are hummers.
• 9:00
Speaker 3: I sure would like to be one of them detectives
• 9:02
Speaker 3: they tell about with all the excitement they have tracing
• 9:06
Speaker 3: up murderers and such.
• 9:08
Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a pretty detective. You'd make you better be
• 9:11
Speaker 2: getting along detecting a few chores instead of standing here
• 9:14
Speaker 2: talking murder clues. Here, I'll take that bundle in the
• 9:18
Speaker 2: house with these letters.
• 9:20
Speaker 1: She takes package. They do not notice Missus Brewster, who's
• 9:24
Speaker 1: still asleep. Aaron gets closer to Lilian, making up to her.
• 9:30
Speaker 1: She seems unconscious of his intention. About to go to porch.
• 9:35
  Speaker 1: He detains her.
• 9:37
Speaker 3: Say Lilyanne, what you gonna do after supper?
• 9:41
Speaker 2: Wash your dishes? I suppose as usual dinner I guess
• 9:45
Speaker 2: you mean, though, and a pile of dishes it makes
• 9:48
  Speaker 2: too makes me.
• 9:50
Speaker 3: Sick, I say, lilianne. If if I wipe them, then
• 9:55
Speaker 3: we all go and take.
• 9:56
Speaker 2: A walk walk land. I feel more like walk in
• 10:00
Speaker 2: a bed than anywhere is else. Once I get through,
• 10:03
Speaker 2: what do I want to take a walk for?
• 10:05
  Speaker 4: Well?
• 10:06
Speaker 3: I thought, maybe you and me just go for a
• 10:08
Speaker 3: little straw if you like. Seeing as it's moonlight and all,
• 10:13
Speaker 3: anywa ain't looks like it's gonna be a nice evening.
• 10:17
Speaker 2: I declare. Aaron flint. You're old enough to have more
• 10:20
Speaker 2: sense getting sentimental at your age? How many times have
• 10:24
  Speaker 2: I told you?
• 10:25
Speaker 3: Hmmm, well you know the old saying them that loves
• 10:29
Speaker 3: last loves best. So I guess it ain't too late
• 10:32
Speaker 3: for you and me.
• 10:34
Speaker 1: He attempts to kiss her. She gives them a playful
• 10:37
Speaker 1: slap and starts to go up steps. Missus Brewster wakes
• 10:42
Speaker 1: up and sees them. They pause, turning as she speaks.
• 10:47
Speaker 1: Missus Brewster rising, coming towards center.
• 10:51
Speaker 5: Perhaps when you have finished your most unbecoming behavior, you
• 10:55
Speaker 5: will inform me whether any of those letters are for me?
• 10:59
Speaker 1: Aaron an awkward bow of apology.
• 11:02
Speaker 3: Yes, ma'am, several of them.
• 11:05
Speaker 1: Lilian looking over letters, quite unperturbed.
• 11:10
Speaker 2: I guess some of these are for you. If your
• 11:11
  Speaker 2: name's Miss Brewster.
• 11:13
Speaker 1: Hold type letters exeteron left, up, exit, Missus Brewster as
• 11:20
Speaker 1: she takes letters, thanks.
• 11:23
Speaker 2: They look mostly like Belle's. Ma'am. Seems to me.
• 11:26
Speaker 5: You are entirely too familiar for a servant. I shall
• 11:30
Speaker 5: speak to my sister about.
• 11:31
Speaker 2: It, humph. I ain't afraid of anything you'll say to
• 11:34
Speaker 2: Miss Newcome about me. I guess I ain't lived with
• 11:37
Speaker 2: her the past fourteen years without her knowing me well
• 11:39
Speaker 2: enough to not let anything you could say count, even
• 11:42
Speaker 2: if you are her own sister and from the city.
• 11:46
Speaker 2: I should think the way you've been staying here all summer,
• 11:48
Speaker 2: you and your daughter, and been waited on and everything
• 11:51
Speaker 2: without paying a cent for it, that you wouldn't have
• 11:53
Speaker 2: so very much to say. That's my opinion, if I
• 11:57
Speaker 2: was to express it.
• 11:59
Speaker 1: Lilian is on in a huff. Missus Brewster has crossed
• 12:03
Speaker 1: back to left near seat, almost overcome by her indignation.
• 12:09
Speaker 5: Oh, this is more than I can be expected to stand.
• 12:13
Speaker 2: Well, then you can sit down to it. There's a
• 12:16
Speaker 2: seat right behind you.
• 12:18
Speaker 1: Missus Brewster sinks into chair, apparently about to faint. Lilian
• 12:23
Speaker 1: disdains her enter right upper entrance Helen Brewster and Leonard Fillmore.
• 12:31
Speaker 1: She carries a parasol and a bunch of wild flowers.
• 12:35
Speaker 1: Leonard stays up by gate. Helen coming down.
• 12:39
Speaker 6: Why mother, what's the matter are you ill?
• 12:43
Speaker 1: Goes to missus Brewster.
• 12:45
Speaker 5: I have been insulted by that person.
• 12:48
Speaker 1: There, indicating Lilian. Leonard looks at Lilian with a knowing smile.
• 12:55
Speaker 2: Leanne I ain't heard her any just saying a few
• 12:58
Speaker 2: things to ease my man. I guess she'll live through it.
• 13:02
Speaker 1: Exsit Lily onto house with a touss of her head
• 13:05
Speaker 1: and an indignant sniff. Leonard fil coming down to write center.
• 13:12
Speaker 4: You mustn't take Lilyanne too seriously, missus Brewster. She's a
• 13:16
Speaker 4: privileged character around here again, know I.
• 13:19
Speaker 5: Should say she is. It's insufferable the way my sister
• 13:22
Speaker 5: permits that woman to dominate and make herself so offensive.
• 13:26
Speaker 5: I shall have her dismissed.
• 13:29
Speaker 4: Hmm, well, I'm inclined to think even you couldn't have
• 13:32
Speaker 4: that done, Missus Brewster. I'm sorry if she's been rude,
• 13:35
Speaker 4: and I'll speak to miss Newcombe about it. But well,
• 13:38
Speaker 4: I imagine it would be about as easy to dismiss
• 13:41
Speaker 4: the uh pump or the barn as Lily Anne. The
• 13:45
Speaker 4: farm wouldn't be complete without her.
• 13:47
Speaker 1: Missus Prewsta. Changing the subject.
• 13:50
Speaker 5: Helen, I should like to know where you have been
• 13:53
  Speaker 5: all this time?
• 13:54
Speaker 6: We have been for a stroll, mister Filmore, and I
• 13:58
Speaker 6: are any of those letters for me?
• 14:00
Speaker 1: One gives Helen little.
• 14:03
Speaker 4: I am afraid it was largely my fault. I believe
• 14:06
Speaker 4: I am veigled Miss Brewster into walking rather farther than
• 14:10
Speaker 4: she otherwise would have done.
• 14:12
Speaker 5: Indeed, the persuasive powers of a promising young legal light.
• 14:18
Speaker 5: How interesting, Helen, smiling.
• 14:21
Speaker 6: Mother, promising he has already quite arrived. You know, he
• 14:27
Speaker 6: was telling me of one of his cases. What was it,
• 14:30
Speaker 6: mister Fillmore, defending a yokel whose cow is accused of
• 14:34
Speaker 6: infringing upon another man's property and destroying some cabbages.
• 14:38
Speaker 4: Yes, quite as important as that. I think I shall
• 14:41
Speaker 4: win my case too, after a hard judicial struggle. And
• 14:45
Speaker 4: when I do, I shall come and claim your congratulations.
• 14:49
Speaker 4: That steps Now, if you will excuse me, I will
• 14:53
Speaker 4: look for miss Newcombe. I have a little business to transact,
• 14:56
Speaker 4: and at the same time I will speak to her
• 14:58
Speaker 4: about the offending Lily Anne.
• 15:01
Speaker 1: Exit Leonard's house with a show of good natured dignity, Helen.
• 15:07
Speaker 5: I believe he was half laughing at.
• 15:08
Speaker 1: Us, Helen, who is reading her letter, No doubt, missus
• 15:14
Speaker 1: Brewster again seated laughed.
• 15:17
Speaker 5: And I should like to know what you mean by
• 15:19
Speaker 5: such a show of intimacy with him, a mere country
• 15:22
Speaker 5: lawyer taking a stroll with him.
• 15:24
Speaker 6: And oh well, one has to have a little amusement
• 15:28
Speaker 6: in this forsaken place. Do let me entertain myself in
• 15:32
Speaker 6: some way. Besides, look what a reward I reaped, this
• 15:36
  Speaker 6: beautiful bouquet.
• 15:38
Speaker 1: Quots flowers in Missus Brewster's lap, Missus Brewster throwing flowers
• 15:43
Speaker 1: to ground, And what of me?
• 15:45
Speaker 5: I hope you don't think I stay here from choice.
• 15:48
Speaker 5: Surely it is better than shutting ourselves up in the
• 15:51
Speaker 5: city or going to some cheap boarding house, as we
• 15:55
Speaker 5: would have had to do. You know, bar Harbor and
• 15:59
Speaker 5: Newport were quite out of the question. Look at these bills, bills, bills, threats, lawsuits.
• 16:09
Speaker 5: We dare not go back to New York for fear
• 16:11
Speaker 5: of our creditors. I don't know what is to become
• 16:15
  Speaker 5: of us.
• 16:16
Speaker 6: We can't stay and live on Aunt Sarah much longer,
• 16:19
Speaker 6: that's certain. It is becoming unbearable.
• 16:23
Speaker 5: If only we could have kept up appearances one more season,
• 16:27
Speaker 5: you might have well, something might have turned up, Helen.
• 16:32
Speaker 1: She has gone up by gate now comes down.
• 16:36
Speaker 6: I suppose you mean I might have sold myself or
• 16:39
Speaker 6: you might have sold me. Why not say it. I
• 16:43
Speaker 6: am in the market for the highest bidder, even you
• 16:46
Speaker 6: were not beyond possibilities.
• 16:49
Speaker 5: Helen, How can you say such things to me? Your
• 16:52
Speaker 5: own mother I'm sure I have enough to bear without that.
• 16:57
Speaker 6: I guess I am about as desperate as you are,
• 17:00
Speaker 6: for it seems to be up to me.
• 17:03
Speaker 5: I don't know why you need to put it in
• 17:05
Speaker 5: that vulgar way, but as you say, we cannot stay
• 17:09
  Speaker 5: here much longer.
• 17:11
Speaker 1: Look at these showing bills.
• 17:14
Speaker 5: If we go back to New York.
• 17:16
Speaker 6: There's Dick. If only he could do something.
• 17:20
Speaker 5: Dick, you know how much good he is to me.
• 17:24
Speaker 5: I did hope when he secured that position in the
• 17:26
Speaker 5: bank at forty dollars a week, that he might at
• 17:28
Speaker 5: least cease to be a worry to me.
• 17:30
Speaker 6: But no, nevertheless, he is still your son and my
• 17:35
  Speaker 6: brother much good.
• 17:37
Speaker 5: Such a son as to me, I have practically disowned him,
• 17:42
Speaker 5: you know, it is nearly a year since we've even
• 17:44
Speaker 5: seen him. No, we must think of something more reliable
• 17:49
Speaker 5: than Dick. My dear. Now there was.
• 17:55
Speaker 6: Mister Deering, Yes, one of the likely bidders. Well, if
• 18:00
Speaker 6: it will be any satisfaction to you, this letter is
• 18:04
Speaker 6: from him, Helen, And does he Yes, Mother, I believe
• 18:09
Speaker 6: you really have a chance to sell me at a
• 18:11
  Speaker 6: very good price.
• 18:13
Speaker 5: Helen. I refuse to listen to such talk, you know,
• 18:17
Speaker 5: he is a gentleman. He is worth millions. You should
• 18:21
Speaker 5: consider yourself a very lucky girl.
• 18:23
Speaker 6: I suppose I am so far as your idea of
• 18:26
Speaker 6: luck is concerned. But that man, old gross, the fairy
• 18:32
Speaker 6: thought of him repels me.
• 18:34
Speaker 5: Why mister Daring is not more than forty five? Well,
• 18:39
Speaker 5: or eight or nine perhaps, And think of all you
• 18:42
Speaker 5: could command as his wife. But the question is at present,
• 18:48
Speaker 5: how are we to manage to get back to New York,
• 18:50
Speaker 5: pay our bills, and keep up appearances until I can
• 18:53
Speaker 5: be brought about. I know of just one way, my sister.
• 19:00
Speaker 6: What aunt Sarah, that simple, countrified old maid? Pray? What
• 19:06
  Speaker 6: could she do?
• 19:08
Speaker 5: She could help us out of our difficulties if she would.
• 19:12
Speaker 5: You may not know it, my dear, but Sarah Newcombe
• 19:15
Speaker 5: is rich. At least she must have a great deal
• 19:19
Speaker 5: of money. When our father died, Sarah and I came
• 19:23
Speaker 5: in for everything he had. He had run this farm
• 19:25
Speaker 5: for many years, and his father had before him, and
• 19:28
Speaker 5: had made money which he invested and increased. When he
• 19:33
Speaker 5: made his will, I chose cash, and in time received
• 19:37
Speaker 5: ten thousand dollars. Sarah kept the farm as her share
• 19:41
Speaker 5: and has rusticated here ever since. Well, I well, I
• 19:47
Speaker 5: went to the city, met your father, married him, and
• 19:51
Speaker 5: entered upon the life that appealed to me. Your father's
• 19:55
Speaker 5: death left me well provided.
• 19:56
  Speaker 7: For, but.
• 19:58
Speaker 5: Oh well vanished well, Sarah, her money must have accumulated
• 20:05
Speaker 5: and increased, so you see, my dear, she is rich.
• 20:10
Speaker 6: Well. I must say, it is the last thing I
• 20:13
Speaker 6: ever would have thought of. But even so, do you
• 20:16
Speaker 6: think you could manage it or her?
• 20:19
Speaker 5: It would have to be carefully done. Of course, by
• 20:23
Speaker 5: the way, that mister Fillmore is her legal adviser, I
• 20:26
Speaker 5: believe he has charge of all our affairs. He'd know
• 20:30
Speaker 5: just how much she is worth, and she would accept
• 20:33
  Speaker 5: his advice.
• 20:35
  Speaker 8: Hmm.
• 20:36
Speaker 5: Perhaps, after all, you'd better be a bit nice to him.
• 20:40
Speaker 6: You want me to pump him, to exert an insidious
• 20:43
Speaker 6: influence as it were, Oh very well, leave it to me.
• 20:47
Speaker 6: He's rather too nice a fellow to be made a
• 20:50
Speaker 6: fool of, even if I can do it. But as
• 20:53
Speaker 6: you say, something must be done. Anything is better than
• 20:57
Speaker 6: the poor house and oblivion.
• 21:00
Speaker 5: And in the meantime, don't forget that it would be
• 21:03
Speaker 5: good policy to keep on the right side of all
• 21:05
Speaker 5: these people, to make as good an impression as possible.
• 21:09
Speaker 6: Oh yes, we may as well begin to do the
• 21:12
Speaker 6: thing upright, even if it is rather late in the day.
• 21:15
Speaker 5: Helen. Sometimes you shock me by your absolute vulgarity. Please
• 21:20
Speaker 5: do not use such expressions. We shall do nothing dishonorable.
• 21:26
Speaker 6: I hope not, but I must say the very idea
• 21:30
Speaker 6: is repellent to me. I wish it were well over And.
• 21:34
Speaker 1: To Lilian from house to porch, her hands rolled up
• 21:38
  Speaker 1: an apron.
• 21:39
Speaker 2: Say, Miss Newcombe wants to know what you think you'd
• 21:42
Speaker 2: like to have for supper or dinner. I suppose you'd
• 21:44
  Speaker 2: call it.
• 21:46
Speaker 5: It's very kind of you to consult us, isn't it, Helen.
• 21:50
Speaker 5: Can you think of anything you should like to have? Dear?
• 21:53
Speaker 2: Well, of course, this ain't no first class hotel. We
• 21:56
  Speaker 2: ain't got everything.
• 21:58
Speaker 6: I'm sure anything Aunt Sarah ruh it is kind enough
• 22:01
Speaker 6: to provide will be most acceptable.
• 22:03
Speaker 2: Yes, of course, Land you're getting mighty In particular, all
• 22:07
Speaker 2: of a sudden seems to me, well, how at a good
• 22:10
Speaker 2: boiled dinner? Do you?
• 22:12
Speaker 5: I'm afraid I don't know just what you mean.
• 22:15
Speaker 2: Huh, I guess you know what a boiled dinner is,
• 22:18
Speaker 2: all right? Used to live here on the farm yourself
• 22:20
Speaker 2: till you went away to boarding school and got in
• 22:22
Speaker 2: with city folks in their high notions. I guess you've
• 22:25
Speaker 2: at boiled dinners before now.
• 22:27
Speaker 6: Indeed, but I never lived on the farm, you know, Lilyane,
• 22:32
Speaker 6: So perhaps you will inform me just what a boiled
• 22:35
Speaker 6: dinner is. Something boiled, of course.
• 22:39
Speaker 2: Sure, cabbage, turnips, potatoes and so forth, boiled in with
• 22:43
Speaker 2: a nice hunk of salt pork part lean hmm. It
• 22:47
Speaker 2: just touches the spot with us. But well, miss Nuko,
• 22:50
Speaker 2: ain't let me have one all summer, thinking it wouldn't
• 22:52
Speaker 2: be stylish enough for you. But I guess you'd manage
• 22:55
  Speaker 2: to eat it.
• 22:56
Speaker 6: I am sure it sounds quite alluring.
• 23:00
Speaker 2: Well it sounds good in filling anyhow, squash Pie goes
• 23:03
Speaker 2: fine with it. And as I said to Miss Newcombe,
• 23:06
Speaker 2: if they don't like it, let him go without tenny rate.
• 23:08
Speaker 2: It's what we're going to have, because I got it over.
• 23:12
Speaker 1: Missus Brewster, as if unable to control herself, has gone
• 23:16
Speaker 1: up by gate, is looking off left. Helen shrugs her
• 23:20
Speaker 1: shoulders good naturedly. Lilian goes to the door, meeting Leonard,
• 23:26
Speaker 1: who enters from house. He passes her and comes down
• 23:30
Speaker 1: to write center exit Lilian to house Leonard looking back
• 23:36
  Speaker 1: at Lilian.
• 23:37
Speaker 4: I hope she hasn't been letting out again. I've tried
• 23:40
Speaker 4: to get here in time to ward her off, but
• 23:42
Speaker 4: was talking to Miss Newcombe.
• 23:44
Speaker 6: We have been ordering our dinner, that's all. It's to
• 23:47
Speaker 6: be a boiled one. Quite a feast, I believe.
• 23:51
Speaker 4: Yes, indeed, you have a treat in store, one of
• 23:55
Speaker 4: Lilyanne's boiled dinners and squash pie for dessert.
• 23:58
Speaker 6: I hope, yes, I believe that is to be a
• 24:01
Speaker 6: part of the banquet.
• 24:02
Speaker 1: Going part way up center?
• 24:04
Speaker 6: Mother, aren't you going to take a little nap in
• 24:08
Speaker 6: preparation for such a gastronomical.
• 24:11
  Speaker 1: Smiling to Leonard.
• 24:13
Speaker 6: Is that a good word feast?
• 24:17
Speaker 5: No, I napped quite sufficiently this afternoon while you and
• 24:21
Speaker 5: mister Fillmore were taking a stroll and picking wildflowers.
• 24:25
Speaker 1: I believe Leonard has crossed the left. Notice is the
• 24:29
  Speaker 1: flowers on ground?
• 24:31
  Speaker 2: Now?
• 24:31
Speaker 1: Glances rather ruefully at them.
• 24:34
Speaker 5: I wish to go in and see Miss Newcombe if
• 24:37
Speaker 5: you can spare me for a few moments.
• 24:40
  Speaker 4: Oh, yes, certainly.
• 24:42
Speaker 6: Perhaps we will go in the orchard for a little while.
• 24:45
Speaker 6: I just love those early red apples.
• 24:48
Speaker 1: Missus Brewster on steps about to go in the house.
• 24:52
Speaker 5: But my dear, just before dinner, and such a dinner.
• 24:57
Speaker 6: Don't worry, only a nibble, you know, Oh.
• 25:01
Speaker 5: Very well, then I will leave her in your care.
• 25:05
  Speaker 5: Mister Fillmore.
• 25:07
Speaker 1: Thanks trust me, Helen going left.
• 25:11
  Speaker 6: Will you come?
• 25:13
  Speaker 4: Ask me?
• 25:14
Speaker 6: I do, but beware I might tempt you with an apple?
• 25:19
  Speaker 6: You know?
• 25:20
Speaker 4: Oh what a willing adam Am.
• 25:22
Speaker 1: I they are about to go out left. He surrenders
• 25:27
  Speaker 1: to her mood.
• 25:29
Speaker 4: But poor Adam had only an apple to tempt him,
• 25:31
  Speaker 4: while I I.
• 25:32
  Speaker 1: See a peach.
• 25:34
Speaker 6: Oh, mister Fillmore, is that worthy of you? He lawyer too.
• 25:40
Speaker 1: Missus Brewster has stood on steps or porch, watching them
• 25:44
Speaker 1: with a crafty smile. As they excellent left. She turns
• 25:50
Speaker 1: and is about to go into house, but meets Sarah
• 25:53
Speaker 1: and comes back to center and to Sarah and new
• 25:56
Speaker 1: come from house down steps to right center.
• 26:00
Speaker 9: Oh here you are, em, I was looking for you.
• 26:04
Speaker 9: Lily Anne tells me you have ordered a boiled dinner.
• 26:07
Speaker 9: I hope your headache is better or I am afraid.
• 26:11
Speaker 5: It is, thank you, But I ordered nothing. It was
• 26:15
Speaker 5: entirely the maid suggestion. I assure you. I simply thought
• 26:18
Speaker 5: it best to submit. She has pretty much her own way.
• 26:22
  Speaker 5: It strikes me.
• 26:24
Speaker 9: Well, I suppose she has. I guess I've let her
• 26:27
Speaker 9: have it so long there is no breaking her of
• 26:29
Speaker 9: it now. Then, Filmore has just been telling me she
• 26:33
Speaker 9: said something that offended you. You mustn't mind her. Em
• 26:37
Speaker 9: I really couldn't get along without her, You know.
• 26:40
Speaker 5: I am willing to overlook a great deal, Sara. But
• 26:43
Speaker 5: she actually had the presumption to insinuate that Helen and
• 26:47
Speaker 5: I are imposing upon you by remaining here as if
• 26:51
Speaker 5: you my own dear sister.
• 27:00
Speaker 1: Wiping eyes, pretending to be near tears.
• 27:04
Speaker 9: The idea why you're welcome to stay here as long
• 27:08
Speaker 9: as you please. You know that I feel honored to
• 27:11
Speaker 9: think it's good enough for you. After all, you are
• 27:14
Speaker 9: city grandeur and everything. Lilian just bloots things out. You
• 27:19
Speaker 9: mustn't pay any attention to her.
• 27:20
Speaker 5: M Well, I'll try not to do so hereafter. But
• 27:25
Speaker 5: please don't call me em Sarah. It quite annoys me,
• 27:29
  Speaker 5: does it.
• 27:31
Speaker 9: Land. It never occurred to me. I can't seem to
• 27:34
Speaker 9: think of Emmeline somehow, you see, it sort of seems
• 27:38
Speaker 9: just the same to me as it did when we
• 27:39
Speaker 9: was girls here together, and we used to always call
• 27:42
Speaker 9: you m in those days.
• 27:45
  Speaker 2: My.
• 27:45
Speaker 9: But it's a long time since then, isn't it, em Meelyne?
• 27:51
Speaker 5: Quite too long to mention or even think about?
• 27:54
  Speaker 9: I should say, I don't see why tain't noticed grace
• 27:57
Speaker 9: to be getting old, as I can see all the
• 28:00
Speaker 9: best people are doing it, you know. Besides, you ain't
• 28:03
  Speaker 9: more than Sarah.
• 28:05
  Speaker 5: Please.
• 28:06
Speaker 9: Oh well, then I won't but think how long it
• 28:10
Speaker 9: is since you were here that other time, when Helen
• 28:12
Speaker 9: was about four years old and your boy was only
• 28:15
Speaker 9: a baby. Ah, what a cute little thing he was,
• 28:19
Speaker 9: your dicky, Emmeline. Why he must be almost a man
• 28:22
Speaker 9: now and a real joy to you?
• 28:25
Speaker 5: A joy, my son? Ha little you know him or
• 28:30
Speaker 5: what he is to me? A trial, a tribulation, I
• 28:36
Speaker 5: might even say, a disgrace. Sometimes I think it would
• 28:41
Speaker 5: have been better had he never been born.
• 28:43
Speaker 9: Why, Emmeline, what do you mean? I've wondered why you
• 28:47
Speaker 9: never said much about him, Why you never seem to
• 28:50
Speaker 9: want to tell me. But Emmeline, your boy, little dick,
• 28:55
  Speaker 9: your own son.
• 28:57
Speaker 5: How can you say such a thing? Because it is true? Well,
• 29:02
Speaker 5: has he ever considered me? He spends what he earns
• 29:05
Speaker 5: on right, is living in the company of persons who
• 29:08
Speaker 5: are called fast and who tempt him to misdeeds and
• 29:11
Speaker 5: forgetfulness of what is honest and upright. That is the
• 29:15
Speaker 5: kind of son I have, Sarah, My little Dick as
• 29:18
  Speaker 5: you call him.
• 29:19
Speaker 9: Dick, the baby boy I used to hold in these
• 29:23
Speaker 9: arms and cuddle up to me and wish was mine.
• 29:27
Speaker 9: And then that summer you let him come here and
• 29:29
Speaker 9: stay with me when he was ten years old because
• 29:32
Speaker 9: he wasn't very well. The summer that was like heaven
• 29:35
Speaker 9: to me, because I had him just like he was mine,
• 29:39
Speaker 9: my very own. Oh how I loved him, and he
• 29:43
Speaker 9: learned to love me too, And then I had to
• 29:46
Speaker 9: give him up, let him go back to you, who
• 29:50
Speaker 9: can say such things about him, that he's a trial
• 29:54
Speaker 9: and a tribulation. Oh, Emmeline, Emmeline Brewster, What kind of
• 29:59
Speaker 9: mother had you've been if you have let him grow
• 30:01
Speaker 9: up to be that kind of man?
• 30:04
Speaker 5: I dare say you think I am to blame little
• 30:07
Speaker 5: you know of such matters of the world of life.
• 30:11
Speaker 9: Maybe I know more about some things than you think
• 30:13
Speaker 9: I do. At any rate, I know enough about the
• 30:17
Speaker 9: world and life to know what a real mother ought
• 30:20
Speaker 9: to be, and that the right kind never would talk
• 30:22
Speaker 9: that way about her own son, no matter what he
• 30:25
Speaker 9: was or what he had done. Mother, you you never
• 30:30
Speaker 9: was fit to be one. It wasn't in you. Forgive me, em,
• 30:34
Speaker 9: but I'm going to speak the truth if it does hurt.
• 30:37
Speaker 9: When you was a girl, it was all for dressing
• 30:39
Speaker 9: up and looking pretty, with you going away to boarding
• 30:43
Speaker 9: school and getting educated, as you called it, well you did.
• 30:48
Speaker 9: They're in the real world you talk about, and that
• 30:51
Speaker 9: you say, I don't know what understand then I thank
• 30:55
  Speaker 9: Heaven I don't, and I wish you didn't. A world
• 30:58
Speaker 9: that makes a woman so hard that she calls her
• 31:00
Speaker 9: own son a tribulation and a disgrace instead of the
• 31:04
Speaker 9: blessing he ought to be to her.
• 31:06
Speaker 5: I refuse to listen to any more of your abuse.
• 31:10
Speaker 5: Even my own sister has no right to say such
• 31:12
  Speaker 5: things to me.
• 31:14
Speaker 1: She crosses to exit left, but Sarah bars her way.
• 31:18
  Speaker 1: She pauses.
• 31:20
Speaker 9: I guess you'll have to listen, Emmeline, for I'm going
• 31:23
Speaker 9: to say what I've got to say. I've had it
• 31:25
Speaker 9: on my mind for some time, and I might as
• 31:27
Speaker 9: well let it out right now. I thought it was
• 31:30
Speaker 9: bad enough the way you've let your girl grow up
• 31:32
Speaker 9: to be proud and vain, though I can't see. She
• 31:35
Speaker 9: has her soft side and might make a good woman
• 31:37
Speaker 9: if she had a chance. But when you talk that
• 31:40
Speaker 9: way about your boy, about Dick, who was so sweet
• 31:44
Speaker 9: and cunning when he was a baby, and such a
• 31:47
Speaker 9: manly little fellow when he was only ten years old,
• 31:50
Speaker 9: why that's more than I can listen to and not
• 31:53
Speaker 9: say something, Oh, Emmeline, why wasn't he my boy? Why
• 31:57
Speaker 9: was he given to you that doesn't care for him
• 32:00
Speaker 9: instead of to me, who has wanted him and could
• 32:03
Speaker 9: have been a real mother to him and loved and
• 32:06
Speaker 9: protected him and helped him to be a good, true man,
• 32:10
Speaker 9: instead of what you say he is. It's me that
• 32:13
Speaker 9: has had the mother feeling in me all these years
• 32:16
Speaker 9: instead of you. Though I'm nothing but a poor little
• 32:19
Speaker 9: old maid with a soul that has starved toward what
• 32:23
Speaker 9: you have neglected and thrown away.
• 32:26
Speaker 1: Missus Brewster has listened, at first disdainfully, even angrily, Then
• 32:33
Speaker 1: in a gradually somewhat softened mood, she now shows some
• 32:38
Speaker 1: tenderness for her sister, though still obviously thinking of herself
• 32:43
Speaker 1: and her own advantage.
• 32:46
Speaker 5: I I am sorry, Sarah, if you have missed what
• 32:50
Speaker 5: you think would have been your happiness. But my life
• 32:55
Speaker 5: has been one that you could not understand. You have
• 32:58
Speaker 5: no right to upbraid me. Perhaps you'll have fared better
• 33:03
Speaker 5: than I have. After all, you at least have a
• 33:06
Speaker 5: home to shelter you and after live in comfort, even luxury,
• 33:10
Speaker 5: if you wished the remainder of your life. Well, I
• 33:14
Speaker 5: am at the end of my resources. Unless you help me,
• 33:18
Speaker 5: I see nothing but ruin to spare ahead.
• 33:21
Speaker 9: Why, Emmeline, what do you mean? I thought you had
• 33:24
Speaker 9: a grand home. Everything.
• 33:28
Speaker 5: We have been trying to keep up appearances, Helen and I.
• 33:32
Speaker 5: She has prospects of marrying a very rich man if
• 33:36
Speaker 5: we can manage to go back and resume our accustomed
• 33:40
Speaker 5: way of living for another season at least. But unless
• 33:43
Speaker 5: you can help me, everything I have must go. House,
• 33:47
Speaker 5: furniture all a few thousand dollars, which I feel sure
• 33:53
  Speaker 5: you can spare.
• 33:54
Speaker 9: A few thousand dollars land. I never saw more than
• 33:59
Speaker 9: a twenty dollar all at one time in my life
• 34:02
Speaker 9: as I know of. It was you had the money
• 34:04
Speaker 9: after father died. If you used it up and got
• 34:07
Speaker 9: in debt, why it seems to me that's your fault,
• 34:11
  Speaker 9: not mine.
• 34:12
Speaker 5: Oh, Sarah, I didn't think you could be so hard
• 34:17
Speaker 5: so you refuse to help me. You would let me
• 34:20
Speaker 5: starve your own sister.
• 34:23
Speaker 9: Well, I guess you won't need to do that as
• 34:25
Speaker 9: long as I have a home and plenty for you too.
• 34:28
Speaker 9: But of course, if you are so poor and I'm
• 34:30
Speaker 9: what you call rich, why well, I'll speak to lend
• 34:34
Speaker 9: Fillmore about it. He knows how much I've got and everything.
• 34:38
Speaker 9: I always take his advice.
• 34:40
Speaker 5: I should think you need not conform to the opinions
• 34:43
Speaker 5: of a mere country lawyer.
• 34:45
Speaker 9: Well, lem may be a country lawyer, but he's a
• 34:47
Speaker 9: good one, and I reckon that's a few city ones.
• 34:50
Speaker 9: He could give a few pointers too when it comes
• 34:52
Speaker 9: to that. You know, all the smart folks don't live
• 34:55
Speaker 9: in the city. I guess maybe it's so full it's
• 34:58
Speaker 9: run over and a few of them have to stay
• 35:00
Speaker 9: in the country at any rate. It's Lenn Filmore. I'll
• 35:03
Speaker 9: have a talk with and maybe we can fix things
• 35:06
Speaker 9: up for you. Do you know I've sort of thought
• 35:08
Speaker 9: I'd like to go to the city for a spell
• 35:10
Speaker 9: myself and see real life, as you call it. If
• 35:15
Speaker 9: Lane thinks I can afford it, I might go home
• 35:17
Speaker 9: with you, set you on your feet and see a
• 35:19
Speaker 9: little style. My self got a room you could spare
• 35:22
Speaker 9: me in that grand mention of yours.
• 35:25
Speaker 5: Why I hadn't thought of that. I hardly think you
• 35:29
Speaker 5: would care for our method of living, Sarah, Dear, it
• 35:33
Speaker 5: is so different, you know, so.
• 35:37
Speaker 9: So you needn't get fidgety about it yet. Awhile, I
• 35:41
Speaker 9: ain't begun to pack my trunk yet. Now I'll have
• 35:44
Speaker 9: to go in the house and see how Lily Anne's
• 35:46
Speaker 9: getting along with that supper or dinner as you call it.
• 35:50
  Speaker 1: Going to write.
• 35:52
Speaker 9: If you see Lenn Fillmore, you might tell him I
• 35:54
Speaker 9: want to see him before he goes home.
• 35:57
Speaker 1: Very well, Sarah, on port about to enter house.
• 36:02
Speaker 9: And by the way, if you want that rich man
• 36:05
Speaker 9: you spoke about to have a chance, it's my opinion
• 36:08
Speaker 9: you'd better keep an eye on that daughter of yours.
• 36:10
Speaker 9: And that plain country lawyer going to court sort of
• 36:13
Speaker 9: in his line, you know, and they do say he's
• 36:16
Speaker 9: pretty good at pleading a case.
• 36:19
Speaker 1: Exit Sarah at a house. Missus Brewster looks slightly alarmed,
• 36:24
Speaker 1: starts left as if to go and seek Helen and
• 36:26
Speaker 1: Leonard and to Aaron left upper entrance with milking pails,
• 36:33
Speaker 1: Aaron coming down through gate.
• 36:36
Speaker 3: Why is she looking for anybody? Miss Brewster? No, Oh,
• 36:41
Speaker 3: thought maybe you was, And I was gonna say if
• 36:44
Speaker 3: twice your daughter and Lynn Fillmore. I've seen him out
• 36:48
Speaker 3: in the orchard there, eating enough apples to give him
• 36:51
Speaker 3: a stomach ache, sitting pretty close to each other too,
• 36:55
Speaker 3: on the sun wall.
• 36:57
Speaker 7: I beg of you.
• 36:59
Speaker 5: Spare me your plea being observations.
• 37:02
Speaker 3: Gosh, I didn't know any such high falutin fixings ain't
• 37:06
  Speaker 3: in my line.
• 37:08
Speaker 1: He crosses to right, puts pails on porch, comes back
• 37:12
  Speaker 1: to write center.
• 37:14
  Speaker 3: Say, ma'am, if you don't mind, I wish you'd tell
• 37:18
Speaker 3: me something. I'm getting kind of tired of this country life.
• 37:22
Speaker 3: I like to go to the city and do something.
• 37:26
Speaker 3: Think they'd any chance for a fellow like me down there?
• 37:30
Speaker 5: Scarcely? Your place evidently is where you are.
• 37:35
Speaker 3: Well, I don't know. Sometimes we country fellas fool you.
• 37:41
Speaker 3: Would you think it now to look at me that
• 37:43
Speaker 3: I got the makings of a first class detective in me?
• 37:47
  Speaker 3: Would you?
• 37:48
  Speaker 10: No?
• 37:50
Speaker 5: It is the last thing I should be willing to believe.
• 37:53
Speaker 3: That's what I thought, But there is, yes, serim, ma'am.
• 37:58
Speaker 3: Miss Newcom. She gets all them books about crimes and such,
• 38:02
Speaker 3: you know, detecative stories, Sherlock, Holmes, Ashton Kirk and all them,
• 38:09
Speaker 3: and sometimes she lets me read them. They certainly do
• 38:13
Speaker 3: give a fellow an insight into the way things are
• 38:16
Speaker 3: among you city folk. Must be a pretty hard lock.
• 38:19
  Speaker 3: Come right down.
• 38:20
Speaker 1: To it, missus Brewster, about to go out left.
• 38:25
Speaker 5: I have no desire to listen to your opinions. I
• 38:30
Speaker 5: understand that miss Newcomb is in the habit of reading
• 38:32
Speaker 5: those lurid romances, and I am much surprised that you
• 38:36
Speaker 5: should burden her mind with such sensational trash.
• 38:40
Speaker 3: Oh, she just don'ts on them, says the biggest men
• 38:44
Speaker 3: read them, even Len the Fillmore. He says they help
• 38:48
Speaker 3: him in his law business.
• 38:51
Speaker 5: Indeed, I must say that is about the opinion I
• 38:55
Speaker 5: had of him and his legal ability, calling as she
• 39:00
Speaker 5: goes off left, Helen, Helen, where are you.
• 39:06
Speaker 1: Exit? Missus Brewster? Left? Second exit, Aaron going to left,
• 39:11
  Speaker 1: calling after.
• 39:12
Speaker 3: Her better tell her Land to stop eating them apples,
• 39:16
Speaker 3: cause Lilyan says, we're going to have a board dinner
• 39:19
Speaker 3: and they won't have room for it.
• 39:22
Speaker 1: Aaron goes to right, takes pails and is about to
• 39:25
Speaker 1: enter house when he turns, glances off left upper exit, stops, looks,
• 39:33
Speaker 1: then sets down pails and goes up to gate, looking
• 39:36
Speaker 1: off left with a show of interest. Harries off left
• 39:40
Speaker 1: upper exit, and after a pause, re enters, leading Dick
• 39:46
Speaker 1: Brewster by the arm. Dick is dusty, pail and almost exhausted.
• 39:52
Speaker 3: Who beyre what do you want?
• 39:55
Speaker 1: Leads Dick left to seat. Dick sinks down Aaron regards
• 40:01
  Speaker 1: him suspiciously.
• 40:03
Speaker 3: Why don't you speak?
• 40:05
Speaker 11: You're sick, no, only tired about played out? I I've
• 40:11
Speaker 11: walked a long distance and I haven't had anything to
• 40:13
Speaker 11: eat since since last night.
• 40:16
Speaker 3: He ain't gosh, I should think you would be weak. Hmm,
• 40:22
Speaker 3: you don't look just like a tramp dick with some spirit.
• 40:27
  Speaker 3: I'm not.
• 40:28
Speaker 11: You needn't think I'm anything like that. I is this
• 40:32
Speaker 11: where miss Newcomb lives?
• 40:34
  Speaker 5: Why?
• 40:34
Speaker 3: Yes, this is her place. You don't want to see her,
• 40:38
  Speaker 3: do you?
• 40:39
Speaker 11: I want to know if missus Brewster is here? Missus
• 40:42
  Speaker 11: Brewster and.
• 40:45
Speaker 3: Miss Brewster, Oh you know them, do you? Yes? They're
• 40:50
Speaker 3: right here. I should say they be have been since
• 40:54
Speaker 3: I don't know when, And it looks like they're going
• 40:57
Speaker 3: to keep running on being.
• 41:00
Speaker 11: I want to see missus Brewster right away. Will you
• 41:04
  Speaker 11: tell her? Please?
• 41:05
Speaker 3: Hm? Why yes, I guess so, looks off left. She's
• 41:12
Speaker 3: out in the orchard there with her daughter and limb fillmore.
• 41:16
Speaker 3: I see him coming now.
• 41:18
Speaker 1: Dick rising, almost tottering, starting to go right.
• 41:23
Speaker 11: I don't want to see anybody else, just my just
• 41:27
Speaker 11: Missus Brewster or Helen.
• 41:30
Speaker 3: Well, then you just come up here and wait a minute,
• 41:33
Speaker 3: and I'll see if I can fix it.
• 41:37
Speaker 1: There and assists Dick off right beyond house, then.
• 41:40
Speaker 3: Returns stay right there till I tell you, and to.
• 41:45
Speaker 1: Helen and Leonard left second entrance, Helen laughing evidently forgetting
• 41:52
Speaker 1: herself at the moment and acting with a natural manner
• 41:55
  Speaker 1: of good humor.
• 41:57
Speaker 6: I'm afraid we're in for it. At least I am
• 42:00
Speaker 6: for a good scolding. I must have eaten at least
• 42:03
Speaker 6: half a dozen of those apples. It's all your fault.
• 42:07
Speaker 4: Oh say, come now, that's reversing scripture and will never
• 42:11
Speaker 4: do the woman did tempt.
• 42:13
Speaker 6: Me, you know nothing of the sort. It was the
• 42:16
Speaker 6: man who did the tempting. This time all the.
• 42:20
Speaker 4: Better since you yielded. I didn't know I had the power.
• 42:23
Speaker 4: Thanks for the compliment.
• 42:25
Speaker 6: You might be welcome had I intended to pay you one,
• 42:28
  Speaker 6: but I didn't.
• 42:30
Speaker 4: Alas, poor Adam, he's bound to get the worst of it.
• 42:33
Speaker 4: Thus does he have another fall from the heights of
• 42:36
Speaker 4: expectation to the depths of despair?
• 42:39
Speaker 6: My, what an ancient joke. Going back to the first.
• 42:43
Speaker 4: Pair and the first apple.
• 42:45
Speaker 6: Oh, worse and worse.
• 42:48
Speaker 1: And to missus Prewstow left second entrance, crossing to.
• 42:52
Speaker 5: Right, Helen, I'm going to my room, and you'd better
• 42:56
Speaker 5: come too. After your walk and such a feast of apples,
• 43:01
Speaker 5: I should think you would need a little rest and
• 43:03
  Speaker 5: quiet before dinner.
• 43:05
Speaker 6: Very well, mother, I'll come right in.
• 43:08
Speaker 1: Helen crosses to right. Leonard goes up center.
• 43:12
Speaker 4: And I think i'll say good afternoon.
• 43:15
Speaker 5: Up by the way, mister Fillmore. Miss Newcomb wished me
• 43:18
Speaker 5: to inform you that she would like to see you
• 43:20
Speaker 5: again for a moment before you leave.
• 43:22
Speaker 4: Thanks. Then i'll wait.
• 43:24
Speaker 1: Exit Missus Brewster to house.
• 43:27
Speaker 6: Yes, you'd better you might get invited to stay and
• 43:31
Speaker 6: have some of that biled dinner.
• 43:32
  Speaker 7: You know.
• 43:34
Speaker 4: That's so guess I had squash pie too. Garden of
• 43:39
Speaker 4: Eden was nothing like this.
• 43:42
Speaker 1: Exit Helen to house, followed by Leonard and to Aaron.
• 43:46
Speaker 1: Wright looks about, then summons Dick, who enters and stands
• 43:50
Speaker 1: by fence, writes, center.
• 43:53
Speaker 3: You stay right here, I'll see if I can get her.
• 43:57
Speaker 1: Dick stands, leaning on fence and showing some agitation. Aaron
• 44:03
Speaker 1: goes over my porch, looks in house, making motions.
• 44:08
Speaker 3: She sees me she's coming.
• 44:11
Speaker 1: Aaron goes and helps Dick to center, partially concealing him
• 44:15
Speaker 1: as Helen enters, did.
• 44:17
Speaker 6: You want me erin?
• 44:19
Speaker 3: M Yes, miss Brewster, there is somebody here wants to
• 44:24
  Speaker 3: see you.
• 44:25
Speaker 1: It's Dick, disclosing himself.
• 44:29
Speaker 5: Helen, Dick, Dick, what are you doing here?
• 44:33
Speaker 11: Where's mother? I want to see her?
• 44:37
Speaker 1: He totters. Helen goes and supports him.
• 44:41
Speaker 6: But Dick, how did you happen to come here? We
• 44:43
Speaker 6: didn't expect you? You are ill? Is anything the matter?
• 44:48
Speaker 11: Yes? Lots is the matter? I I'm in trouble, Helen. I.
• 44:53
Speaker 1: He looks about, as if not wishing to speak before Aaron.
• 44:58
Speaker 1: Helen motions to who nods and exits right beyond house,
• 45:03
  Speaker 1: taking pails.
• 45:05
Speaker 6: There we are alone. Now tell me, Dick, what is it?
• 45:09
Speaker 6: What is the trouble?
• 45:11
Speaker 1: She has assisted him to seech left. He sits. She
• 45:15
Speaker 1: stands by him, showing more surprise than tenderness, but is
• 45:20
Speaker 1: not wholly without sympathy.
• 45:23
Speaker 6: I've run away, run away, But why from what?
• 45:29
Speaker 11: I can't tell you now. I've got to have money,
• 45:32
Speaker 11: that's all, plenty of it to get away out of
• 45:35
Speaker 11: the country. Where's mother?
• 45:38
Speaker 6: She couldn't help you any more than I can. What
• 45:41
Speaker 6: do you mean? What have you done?
• 45:43
Speaker 11: Never mind that there isn't time. I'm your brother, that's all,
• 45:48
Speaker 11: and her son, and you've got to help me. It's
• 45:51
Speaker 11: for your sake as well as for mine. I guess
• 45:53
Speaker 11: if you don't want.
• 45:55
Speaker 6: Oh, Dick, will you never learn to behave yourself to
• 45:58
Speaker 6: be a man? Mother? He is almost desperate, already with
• 46:02
Speaker 6: ruins staring her in the face. And now to have
• 46:05
Speaker 6: you come here in this condition, you who ought to
• 46:08
Speaker 6: help her instead of bringing disgrace upon her, you ought
• 46:12
Speaker 6: to be ashamed of yourself.
• 46:14
Speaker 11: And so would you be if you were any kind
• 46:16
Speaker 11: of a sister, instead of turning on me. Now, when
• 46:19
  Speaker 11: I'm facing.
• 46:20
Speaker 1: And to Sarah from house to porch, Dick sees her
• 46:24
Speaker 1: and shrinks down as if to hide.
• 46:27
  Speaker 4: Who's that?
• 46:28
Speaker 1: I don't want to see Helen disclosing.
• 46:31
  Speaker 6: Him at Sarah.
• 46:33
Speaker 1: This is my brother, Sarah coming down, looking at Dick,
• 46:38
Speaker 1: at first uncomprehendingly, and then with gradual recognition and dawning tenderness.
• 46:45
Speaker 9: You don't mean that that it is, Dick, Little Dick,
• 46:51
Speaker 9: Why you if you haven't grown up into a man?
• 46:55
Speaker 9: The last time I saw you, you were just a
• 46:57
Speaker 9: little fellow. That was it was twelve years ago, and
• 47:01
Speaker 9: you are only ten years old? And now why you're sick?
• 47:06
Speaker 9: Something is the matter?
• 47:09
  Speaker 1: Dick breaking down.
• 47:11
  Speaker 11: Oh I can't stand any more. I'm played out. I
• 47:14
Speaker 11: can't go any further.
• 47:16
Speaker 1: He has tried to rise, but sinks back on to seat.
• 47:20
Speaker 1: Sarah goes to him, sits puts on about him affectionately.
• 47:26
Speaker 9: Why of course you can't. You needn't. You've got home, Dick.
• 47:31
Speaker 9: You've come right here where we've been waiting for you,
• 47:35
Speaker 9: and are glad to see you.
• 47:37
Speaker 11: Oh, you don't know, you don't know.
• 47:40
  Speaker 6: I hope mother doesn't come.
• 47:42
Speaker 9: You go in the house and see that she doesn't.
• 47:45
Speaker 9: I'll talk to Dick and see if I can find
• 47:47
Speaker 9: out what's the matter.
• 47:49
Speaker 1: Helen goes left to steps. Dick starts up but sinks
• 47:54
Speaker 1: back as Sarah gently draws him down beside her.
• 47:57
Speaker 11: But I must see her. I want to tell her.
• 48:01
Speaker 9: Maybe it would be just as well if you told
• 48:03
Speaker 9: me I'm your aunt, Sarah. Though you've sort of forgotten me,
• 48:07
  Speaker 9: haven't you? But I haven't forgotten you, and I I
• 48:12
Speaker 9: guess maybe it would be bitter if you told me
• 48:14
Speaker 9: about it first. Then we'll see.
• 48:17
Speaker 11: You'll help me to get away.
• 48:20
Speaker 1: Sarah to Helen, who still stands.
• 48:22
Speaker 9: Left you go, Helen, he will be all right.
• 48:26
Speaker 1: Exit Helen left the house now.
• 48:29
  Speaker 11: Dick tell me, Oh, I can't. I can't. I don't
• 48:34
Speaker 11: know what to do. They may be after me by
• 48:37
  Speaker 11: this time.
• 48:38
Speaker 9: Who who is after you?
• 48:41
Speaker 11: The police? They may have found out by this time
• 48:44
  Speaker 11: I didn't do it. I didn't, but they will think
• 48:46
Speaker 11: I did. They'll find out I was there some way.
• 48:49
Speaker 11: And then unless I can get away where they can't
• 48:52
  Speaker 11: find me.
• 48:54
Speaker 9: But tell me about it? What was it? How did
• 48:56
Speaker 9: you happen to come here?
• 48:58
Speaker 11: Why? I had heard Mother and Helen speak of you,
• 49:01
Speaker 11: and I remembered you too, about the summer I stayed
• 49:04
Speaker 11: here so long ago, and how good you were to me,
• 49:08
Speaker 11: And then I thought they or you could help me
• 49:11
Speaker 11: in some way. I didn't know where else to go.
• 49:14
Speaker 11: I've got to have money. She's my mother. If I
• 49:17
Speaker 11: haven't done just right, and she's got to help me.
• 49:20
Speaker 11: Where is she? I must see her.
• 49:23
Speaker 9: Pretty soon maybe, But tell me first. What do they
• 49:26
Speaker 9: think you have done?
• 49:28
Speaker 11: It's murder, that's what they'll say. But I didn't do it. No, No,
• 49:33
Speaker 11: I didn't. It was somebody else. But they'll have it
• 49:36
Speaker 11: on me if they find out I was there, I
• 49:39
Speaker 11: was found with the gun. I'm innocent, but they'd never
• 49:41
Speaker 11: believe it. I'll have to go away.
• 49:44
Speaker 1: He starts up as if to go. Sarah again detains him.
• 49:50
Speaker 9: But how where was it when?
• 49:54
Speaker 11: Never mind? Let me go. It may be too late.
• 49:57
Speaker 11: They may have followed me. Where can I go?
• 50:00
Speaker 9: You can't go anywhere. You're in no condition. You'll have
• 50:04
Speaker 9: to stay right here till we can fix you up
• 50:06
Speaker 9: and decide what to do. What I want now is
• 50:10
Speaker 9: for you to tell me all about it, just what happened,
• 50:14
Speaker 9: what you had to do with it and everything, and
• 50:18
Speaker 9: if it's possible, I'll help you.
• 50:21
  Speaker 1: You will.
• 50:22
Speaker 11: You'll give me money to get away.
• 50:25
Speaker 9: I don't know about that, but I'll do just the
• 50:28
Speaker 9: best I can. You can trust me, Dick, trust me
• 50:31
Speaker 9: with your very life.
• 50:33
Speaker 11: It's worth a lot just to hear somebody talk like that,
• 50:37
Speaker 11: to know somebody believes in me a little bit and
• 50:39
Speaker 11: wants to help me. It's an old story, the way
• 50:43
Speaker 11: I've been made a fool of by a woman. But
• 50:45
Speaker 11: I loved her, trusted her. I thought she was as
• 50:49
Speaker 11: good as she was beautiful. She thought I was a
• 50:51
Speaker 11: rich man's son. That was all she cared. And then
• 50:55
Speaker 11: when she found out I was spending every cent I
• 50:57
Speaker 11: had just to buy her flowers and supper. And then
• 51:01
Speaker 11: she tried to throw me over. That made me desperate,
• 51:05
Speaker 11: and one night, three nights ago, I insisted on going
• 51:08
Speaker 11: home with her. She tried to get rid of me,
• 51:11
Speaker 11: but I went, and when we got there, she told
• 51:15
Speaker 11: me she had no more use for me, that I
• 51:17
Speaker 11: wasn't worth bothering with. Then I threatened her, I'll admit that,
• 51:22
Speaker 11: though I didn't really mean it, I only thought perhaps
• 51:24
Speaker 11: I could make her change her mind. Then another man came,
• 51:28
Speaker 11: a really rich one, I suppose, and she told me
• 51:31
Speaker 11: to get out. I wouldn't, so she made me go
• 51:34
Speaker 11: in another room behind some curtains. She was afraid he'd
• 51:38
Speaker 11: be jealous too, And when he came in. He suspected
• 51:42
Speaker 11: there was somebody else there, and they had a row.
• 51:45
Speaker 11: I stood looking through the curtains, watching them, and all of.
• 51:49
Speaker 9: A sudden, y is then all of a sudden.
• 51:54
Speaker 11: There was a shot, and Laura, miss Navarre fell dead.
• 52:00
Speaker 9: Did she was killed? But who who did it?
• 52:05
  Speaker 8: Dick?
• 52:06
  Speaker 9: Not?
• 52:07
  Speaker 11: No, you needn't think I did it. I didn't. I
• 52:10
Speaker 11: don't know who did. All I know is that I
• 52:14
Speaker 11: was alone there in that room behind those curtains, and
• 52:17
Speaker 11: that it was dark in there so that I couldn't see,
• 52:20
Speaker 11: and I didn't hear anyone. But a hand reached over
• 52:23
Speaker 11: my shoulder there in the dark and fired that shot.
• 52:27
Speaker 9: Did you see the hand?
• 52:30
Speaker 11: No, but I felt something for an instant. It just
• 52:35
Speaker 11: seemed to touch my shoulder.
• 52:37
  Speaker 1: That was all.
• 52:38
Speaker 9: But there must have been somebody else there in that room.
• 52:42
Speaker 11: Yes, when I went in, but I didn't see anyone
• 52:46
Speaker 11: as there was no light in there. They must have
• 52:48
Speaker 11: been waiting there all the time for her.
• 52:52
Speaker 9: And after after that shot was fired, what did you do?
• 52:57
  Speaker 3: Why?
• 52:58
Speaker 11: At first I just stood there for a minute. I
• 53:01
Speaker 11: was so frightened and dazed.
• 53:03
Speaker 9: But that other man that was there with her, what
• 53:06
  Speaker 9: did he do?
• 53:08
Speaker 11: I just caught a glimpse of him kneeling down by her.
• 53:11
Speaker 11: He held her up a little, and just then Miss
• 53:14
Speaker 11: Navarre's maid rushed in from the hall, came across and
• 53:17
Speaker 11: threw apart the curtains where I was, and there on
• 53:20
Speaker 11: the floor, just by my feet was the gun. She
• 53:23
Speaker 11: picked it up, stared at me and cried, you have
• 53:26
Speaker 11: killed her and the man. I didn't notice. I don't remember.
• 53:32
Speaker 11: All I know is that the maid went to the
• 53:34
Speaker 11: telephone to call up the police, I suppose, and before
• 53:37
Speaker 11: they could stop me, I rushed out and got away.
• 53:40
Speaker 11: Then I came here. It was all I could do.
• 53:43
Speaker 11: And oh, you don't think I did it. You don't
• 53:46
Speaker 11: believe I'm a murderer. You're my aunt, my mother's own sister.
• 53:50
Speaker 11: You won't let them hang me.
• 53:52
Speaker 9: No, no, Dick, I want to believe you. I want
• 53:56
Speaker 9: to help you if you are innocent, and I can.
• 54:00
Speaker 9: You're the same as my own boy. I want to
• 54:03
Speaker 9: save you. Look at me, Dick, look me straight in
• 54:08
Speaker 9: the face and tell me God seeing you and hearing
• 54:11
Speaker 9: every word you say that you didn't kill that woman.
• 54:15
Speaker 9: You don't know who did. Can you do that, Dick?
• 54:19
  Speaker 11: Yes, I can?
• 54:20
Speaker 1: I do he straightens up and with a clear, candid expression,
• 54:26
Speaker 1: finding sudden courage and determination, looks her squarely in the eyes, and,
• 54:33
Speaker 1: in slightly wavering but honest, convincing tones, speaks.
• 54:39
  Speaker 11: I swear to you, I didn't kill that woman. I
• 54:42
Speaker 11: don't know who did, as I hope her eternal salvation,
• 54:47
Speaker 11: So help me God, I am innocent.
• 54:52
Speaker 1: Sarah stands motionless for a moment, one hand on each
• 54:56
Speaker 1: of Dick's shoulders, looking searchingly into his eye, her face
• 55:01
Speaker 1: showing infinite tenderness and pity. His gaze never falters. After
• 55:08
Speaker 1: an eloquent pause, she suddenly clasps him in her arms,
• 55:13
Speaker 1: holding him closely. He buries his face against her shoulder,
• 55:18
Speaker 1: sobbing gently. Curtain end of Act one, Act two scene

Speaker 1: Missus Brewster, handsomely furnished. An alcove or hallway across left.
• 55:39
Speaker 1: Upper entrance shows staircase and leads to front door off left.
• 55:45
Speaker 1: There is a hall wrack in alcove door left second entrance,
• 55:50
Speaker 1: another in flat right center, and one right table down

Speaker 1: of electric call bell, Davenport, left chairs, et cetera. At
• 56:12
Speaker 1: rise door bell is ringing off left upper entrance. Enter.
• 56:17
Speaker 1: Henson right crosses exits left upper exit. As he exits enter,
• 56:25
Speaker 1: Missus Brewster downstairs comes down to right center just in
• 56:30
Speaker 1: time to receive Ralph Dearing, who is shown in by Henson.
• 56:36
Speaker 1: He hands light, top coat, hat and cain to Henson,
• 56:40
Speaker 1: who leads them on rack and exits right. Deering comes
• 56:45
  Speaker 1: down to center.
• 56:47
Speaker 5: Mister Dearing. How good of you to call so soon.
• 56:51
Speaker 5: I am delighted to see.
• 56:52
Speaker 7: You, delighted to be here, I assure you. Miss Brewster
• 56:57
Speaker 7: was kind enough to write me when you were to return.
• 57:00
Speaker 7: And you see I have lost little time in coming.
• 57:05
Speaker 5: And you are a welcome visitor, the first we have had.
• 57:09
Speaker 5: We returned much earlier than usual, you know, I had
• 57:12
Speaker 5: some business to attend to, and well we were satiated
• 57:15
Speaker 5: with rural felicity, for we were quite in the country,
• 57:19
Speaker 5: you know, and a farm.
• 57:21
Speaker 7: In fact, quite a change, I should imagine from former seasons.
• 57:26
  Speaker 1: They are seated.
• 57:28
Speaker 5: Decidedly, but just what we required after a strenuous social season,
• 57:33
Speaker 5: and very beneficial to both Helen and myself neither of
• 57:36
Speaker 5: us felt equal to bar Harbor or Newport, and they
• 57:40
Speaker 5: have become such an old story summer after summer, So
• 57:44
Speaker 5: I thought it an excellent opportunity to visit my sister
• 57:46
Speaker 5: back at our old home. Oh yes, a decided change.
• 57:52
Speaker 5: Quite the thing, however, you know, for tired nerves and all.
• 57:56
Speaker 7: That, but rather irksome, no doubt, after a while.
• 58:01
Speaker 5: Terribly so. But then it was years since I had
• 58:05
Speaker 5: seen my sister, and I felt guilty having so long
• 58:08
Speaker 5: neglected her. So I summoned courage to go and make
• 58:12
Speaker 5: her a little visit. It did her so much good,
• 58:16
Speaker 5: dear soul, I felt fully rewarded. I have brought her home.
• 58:20
Speaker 7: With me, ah for a little glimpse of city life,
• 58:24
  Speaker 7: I suppose.
• 58:26
Speaker 5: Yes, her first. I had quite a task persuading her
• 58:29
Speaker 5: to come. She has always been such a homebody, formally
• 58:33
Speaker 5: resisted all my opportunities to come and stay with me.
• 58:37
Speaker 5: Of course, she is quite out of her element here,
• 58:40
Speaker 5: not that she is not a deer, but such a
• 58:43
Speaker 5: little country mouse. So shy, I am sure you understand.
• 58:49
Speaker 1: She rises, he does the same.
• 58:52
Speaker 5: I will call Helen. She will be delighted to see you.
• 58:56
Speaker 1: Goos up presses button.
• 58:58
Speaker 7: You think so, I am sure of it, and to Henson.
• 59:03
Speaker 5: Right, Henson, inform miss Brewster that mister Dearan is here.
• 59:08
Speaker 5: You will find her in her room.
• 59:11
Speaker 1: Exit Henson left upper exit up the stairs.
• 59:15
Speaker 7: I think you understand what my feelings are toward your daughter,
• 59:18
Speaker 7: missus Brewster. At least I hope you will not be
• 59:22
Speaker 7: displeased if I tell you that it is my desire
• 59:24
Speaker 7: to make her my wife.
• 59:27
Speaker 5: Nothing could give me greater happiness, Ah, to be sure
• 59:30
Speaker 5: of my dear child's future in your care. It would
• 59:34
Speaker 5: indeed be a blessing.
• 59:37
Speaker 7: The greater share would be bestowed upon me. I am sure.
• 59:41
Speaker 7: But may I hope that miss Brewster Helen.
• 59:46
Speaker 5: You will meet with no discouragement in that direction? I
• 59:48
  Speaker 5: am sure.
• 59:51
Speaker 1: She pauses as she sees Helen, who comes downstairs. Dearing
• 59:56
Speaker 1: also sees her, goes part way up center to meet her.
• 1:00:00
Speaker 1: Helen comes down, greets him with politeness, but little show
• 1:00:04
  Speaker 1: of wolf.
• 1:00:06
Speaker 7: Miss Brewster, it has been a long time.
• 1:00:09
Speaker 1: Henson comes downstairs, exits right.
• 1:00:13
Speaker 6: How do you do, mister Dearing? It is very kind
• 1:00:15
Speaker 6: of you to call so soon after our return.
• 1:00:19
Speaker 7: I was only too glad to have the opportunity in
• 1:00:22
Speaker 7: fact I came up from my country place expressly for
• 1:00:25
Speaker 7: the purpose of being the first to welcome you.
• 1:00:28
Speaker 5: How very very kind of you, was it, not, Helen?
• 1:00:33
  Speaker 6: Most kind?
• 1:00:34
Speaker 1: I am sure, missus Brewster, who has gone upright?
• 1:00:39
Speaker 5: I hope you'll stay to dinner, mister dearing, and take
• 1:00:41
Speaker 5: such as we can offer you. Things are not wholly
• 1:00:44
  Speaker 5: in running order.
• 1:00:45
Speaker 7: Yet, but thank you, But I scarcely think I shall
• 1:00:49
Speaker 7: be able to do so to day. May I not
• 1:00:52
Speaker 7: hope to come again soon?
• 1:00:55
Speaker 5: Indeed, yes, only let us know, And now, if you
• 1:00:59
  Speaker 5: will excuse.
• 1:01:00
Speaker 1: Me, he assents, She exits.
• 1:01:04
Speaker 7: Right, I hear you had a very quiet summer, miss Brewster,
• 1:01:09
Speaker 7: quite in the midst of rural felicity.
• 1:01:12
Speaker 6: Oh that is what mother calls it? Is it? I
• 1:01:15
Speaker 6: am afraid she would speak in less poetic terms if
• 1:01:17
Speaker 6: she were to express her real opinion. We were unutterably bored.
• 1:01:22
Speaker 6: I thought it would never end.
• 1:01:25
Speaker 7: I think I understand you were not in the right
• 1:01:28
Speaker 7: setting there, you who were made for big places, for
• 1:01:31
Speaker 7: brilliant crowds, regal surroundings, where you can reign as queen.
• 1:01:37
Speaker 1: Helen smiling with a lift of her eyebrows.
• 1:01:40
Speaker 6: Dear me, who is getting poetic now you honor me
• 1:01:44
  Speaker 6: too much.
• 1:01:46
Speaker 7: No, No, I could not do that.
• 1:01:50
Speaker 1: He gets close to her, speaking with a warmth of feeling,
• 1:01:53
Speaker 1: which repels her, though she means to encourage him in
• 1:01:58
Speaker 1: spite of herself, however, drawing away.
• 1:02:02
Speaker 7: You know my feelings for you. This is not the
• 1:02:05
Speaker 7: first time I have tried to express them, Miss Brewster. Helen,
• 1:02:11
Speaker 7: tell me, I don't hope in vain that I may
• 1:02:13
Speaker 7: make you the happiest woman in the world.
• 1:02:16
Speaker 6: Ah, that is a pretty big order. Do you think
• 1:02:20
Speaker 6: you could fill it?
• 1:02:21
Speaker 7: Only? Let me try. I can give you all that
• 1:02:24
Speaker 7: a woman can wish. A beautiful home, gorgeous clothes, jewels.
• 1:02:29
Speaker 7: You shall have everything that money can buy. You shall
• 1:02:32
Speaker 7: lead them all, have what you will do, what you choose.
• 1:02:37
Speaker 6: I am afraid it takes more than all that to
• 1:02:39
Speaker 6: make a woman happy, mister Daring.
• 1:02:41
Speaker 7: Some women but devotion, love all my heart?
• 1:02:47
Speaker 6: And isn't that what you would expect in return? Love? Devotion?
• 1:02:52
Speaker 6: And if I could not give them.
• 1:02:55
Speaker 7: You could give yourself, your radiant, beautiful self. That is
• 1:02:59
Speaker 7: what I want you you.
• 1:03:02
Speaker 1: He is about to take her in his arms. She
• 1:03:06
Speaker 1: shows at first some shrinking, but makes an effort to yield.
• 1:03:10
Speaker 1: Is about to do so when the doorbell rings. This
• 1:03:14
Speaker 1: gives her the opportunity to turn from him. He is
• 1:03:18
Speaker 1: compelled to release her with some annoyance. Enter Henson right, crosses,
• 1:03:24
Speaker 1: exits left upper exit.
• 1:03:27
Speaker 6: Will you go in the library? I will join you.
• 1:03:30
Speaker 1: There, deering again, approaching her, but she goes part way
• 1:03:35
Speaker 1: up center. He desists, goes.
• 1:03:38
Speaker 7: Right, very well, I will wait for you there anxiously.
• 1:03:43
Speaker 6: Don't belong no, I will come to you at once.
• 1:03:49
Speaker 1: Exit, dearing right. Helen shudders slightly with evident repulsion and
• 1:03:54
Speaker 1: relief in his absence. She is right center, Enter Henson left.
• 1:04:01
Speaker 10: Upper entrance, mister Fillmore.
• 1:04:05
Speaker 1: Helen's attitude changes. Her expression brightens, denoting pleasure which she
• 1:04:11
Speaker 1: is unable to conceal.
• 1:04:14
Speaker 6: You may show him in Henson.
• 1:04:17
Speaker 1: Exit, Henson left up exit. Helen stands looking up left
• 1:04:22
Speaker 1: upper entrance, expectantly for the moment she becomes her natural self,
• 1:04:28
Speaker 1: greeting Leonard Fillmore cordially when he appears. Enter Leonard Fillmore
• 1:04:35
Speaker 1: left upper entrance, followed by Henson, who exits right.
• 1:04:40
Speaker 6: Mister Fillmore, this is quite a surprise. How do you do?
• 1:04:46
Speaker 4: Fine? Thanks and feeling better still now needn't ask how
• 1:04:50
Speaker 4: you are. You are looking scrumptious my all of.
• 1:04:55
Speaker 6: That m while apples agree with me, you know?
• 1:04:59
Speaker 4: And by dinners, squash pie say the farm lost all
• 1:05:03
Speaker 4: its charm after you left. Excuse me, I guess there's
• 1:05:07
Speaker 4: no law against paying a few compliments. I'm a lawyer,
• 1:05:10
Speaker 4: and I know you see if a fellow means em
• 1:05:13
Speaker 4: with you and Miss Newcomb both gone, well, it was
• 1:05:16
Speaker 4: too much for me.
• 1:05:18
Speaker 6: One cannot imagine the farm without Aunt Sarah. How glad
• 1:05:22
Speaker 6: she will be to see you?
• 1:05:24
Speaker 4: I suppose she will. How is she?
• 1:05:26
Speaker 6: She's well, a bit homesick though I fear, but brave
• 1:05:30
Speaker 6: as I also try to be. But it's hard with
• 1:05:34
Speaker 6: all we have on our minds, and trying to keep
• 1:05:37
  Speaker 6: it from mother.
• 1:05:38
Speaker 4: So she doesn't know yet.
• 1:05:40
Speaker 6: No, I want to keep it from her as long
• 1:05:43
Speaker 6: as possible. She has enough to bear. Oh, mister Fillmore,
• 1:05:47
Speaker 6: what is going to happen? Do you think they will
• 1:05:49
Speaker 6: find my brother convict him? I cannot think of it.
• 1:05:53
  Speaker 6: I dare not.
• 1:05:55
Speaker 4: We're going to do everything there is to be done
• 1:05:59
Speaker 4: for him, and I feel it in my bones everything
• 1:06:03
Speaker 4: will come out all right. Why I don't see how
• 1:06:05
Speaker 4: fate itself could defeat such a spirit, as your aunt
• 1:06:08
Speaker 4: Sarah shows. She's just bound to save her boy as
• 1:06:11
Speaker 4: she calls him, and in spite of all obstacles, I
• 1:06:14
Speaker 4: feel that she'll do it, and I mean to help.
• 1:06:17
Speaker 4: Just you leave it to us and try to look
• 1:06:19
Speaker 4: on the bright side. I can't bear to see you worry.
• 1:06:23
Speaker 6: You are very kind. You do help me. You make
• 1:06:27
Speaker 6: me feel better, do.
• 1:06:29
  Speaker 4: I That's great? If I well, I'd like to feel
• 1:06:34
Speaker 4: better too, if you just say the word. I know
• 1:06:38
Speaker 4: I haven't the right to ask it, just a plain
• 1:06:41
Speaker 4: country lawyer like me. But you're not mad?
• 1:06:44
  Speaker 5: Are you mad?
• 1:06:46
  Speaker 7: Why?
• 1:06:46
Speaker 6: Of course not? How could I be? Besides, being poor
• 1:06:50
Speaker 6: is no disgrace. And as for playing well, there might
• 1:06:54
Speaker 6: be two opinions about that.
• 1:06:57
  Speaker 1: Leonard impulsively forgetting.
• 1:06:59
Speaker 4: Himself miss Er Helen.
• 1:07:04
Speaker 1: Helen suddenly realizing that she is encouraging him too much,
• 1:07:09
Speaker 1: changing her mood, repulsing him, though not too pronouncedly.
• 1:07:14
Speaker 6: But Dick, you haven't told me what about him? Where
• 1:07:18
  Speaker 6: is he?
• 1:07:20
Speaker 4: That's right, we have no right to think of other
• 1:07:22
Speaker 4: things now. But you you see, I sort of forgot
• 1:07:25
Speaker 4: and why he's here? I brought him with me here. Yes,
• 1:07:30
Speaker 4: we stayed there in Brookville, nearly a week, you know,
• 1:07:32
Speaker 4: after you all left, And then I decided the only
• 1:07:35
Speaker 4: thing to do was to bring him here, have him
• 1:07:37
Speaker 4: give himself up and stand the chances. Miss Newcombe thought
• 1:07:40
  Speaker 4: so too.
• 1:07:41
Speaker 6: But if they convict him.
• 1:07:44
Speaker 4: Well, there doesn't seem to be much use running away.
• 1:07:46
Speaker 4: He wants to. Thinks they'd never find him, but they
• 1:07:50
Speaker 4: always do, and it would be all the worse when
• 1:07:52
Speaker 4: they did. They'd hold it against him that he was afraid.
• 1:07:56
Speaker 6: Afraid. Of course he's afraid. So am I afraid of
• 1:08:00
Speaker 6: the horror, the disgrace. Oh, it seems too terrible to
• 1:08:04
Speaker 6: be true. How can I ever bear it?
• 1:08:07
  Speaker 1: Oh?
• 1:08:08
Speaker 4: Say now, don't give way like that. I can't bear
• 1:08:11
Speaker 4: to see you, know.
• 1:08:12
Speaker 1: I Helen looking left of Frenchians.
• 1:08:16
  Speaker 6: Is he there?
• 1:08:19
  Speaker 1: Yes?
• 1:08:19
Speaker 4: Your man remembered him, it seems Henson.
• 1:08:23
Speaker 6: Yes, he has been with us for.
• 1:08:25
Speaker 4: Years and he's keeping him out there for the present.
• 1:08:28
Speaker 4: Do you want to see him?
• 1:08:30
  Speaker 6: No, not yet, I can't. I have a caller. He
• 1:08:34
Speaker 6: is waiting for me in the library.
• 1:08:36
  Speaker 4: Hmm.
• 1:08:38
Speaker 6: Oh a he caller, yes, and a very important he.
• 1:08:44
Speaker 6: So I ask you to excuse me. I will have
• 1:08:47
Speaker 6: Henson tell Aunt Sarah you are here.
• 1:08:50
Speaker 1: Gazup is about to press button.
• 1:08:53
Speaker 4: Oh all right, and then after a while, will you
• 1:08:56
Speaker 4: er have him inform you that I am still here?
• 1:09:00
Speaker 6: Perhaps if I can get rid of that other.
• 1:09:03
Speaker 1: He She smiles, not wholly able to conceal her real
• 1:09:09
Speaker 1: feelings for him. He looks relieved thanks, and to Henson
• 1:09:15
  Speaker 1: left upprnchance.
• 1:09:17
Speaker 6: Henson tell Miss Newcombe that mister Fillmore is here. You
• 1:09:21
Speaker 6: will find her in her room. I think the blue.
• 1:09:24
Speaker 1: Room, exit Henson, upstairs, blue room pretty appropriate.
• 1:09:30
Speaker 4: Seems to me kind of in that state myself unless
• 1:09:34
  Speaker 4: you change it.
• 1:09:36
Speaker 1: Helen ignores this remark, though she looks back with a
• 1:09:39
Speaker 1: faint smile as she exits. Right, Leonard looks after her adoringly,
• 1:09:45
Speaker 1: goes upright, then comes back, shaking his head doubtfully, but
• 1:09:50
Speaker 1: with an expression of determination, And to Henson, coming downstairs,
• 1:09:56
  Speaker 1: partly to center.
• 1:09:58
Speaker 10: Miss Newcombe will be right down, sir, about to go
• 1:10:03
Speaker 10: lingers beg pardon, sir, but Master Dick, he looks very
• 1:10:11
Speaker 10: down and sick like. Is anything the matter, may I
• 1:10:15
  Speaker 10: ask sir?
• 1:10:17
Speaker 4: I I guess he just isn't feeling his best.
• 1:10:21
Speaker 10: No, sir, that's how it struck me, Sir. I hope
• 1:10:25
Speaker 10: you will pardon me if I seem too familiar. But
• 1:10:29
Speaker 10: Master Dick always was a favorite of mine, and I
• 1:10:33
Speaker 10: have wondered, often without daring to mention it, what had
• 1:10:37
Speaker 10: become of him, so to speak, and how he was.
• 1:10:41
Speaker 10: He's been absent for the great part of a year,
• 1:10:44
Speaker 10: if I remember rightly.
• 1:10:47
Speaker 4: Yes, he's been away. I believe you say, Miss Newcombe
• 1:10:51
Speaker 4: will be right down.
• 1:10:52
Speaker 10: Yes, sir, to be sure, sir, I beg pardon.
• 1:10:57
Speaker 1: Exit handsome left up exit. Leonard stands down, writes by table,
• 1:11:03
Speaker 1: not seeing Sarah as she comes downstairs, enters left up
• 1:11:08
Speaker 1: her entrance. Sarah sees him with a pleased expression, comes down,
• 1:11:15
Speaker 1: stands close to him a moment before she speaks. Well,
• 1:11:19
Speaker 1: Leonard starts slightly, turns, sees her, speaks in an assumed,
• 1:11:26
Speaker 1: matter of fact manner.
• 1:11:28
Speaker 4: Fair meddline, ma'am, and I hope I see you the
• 1:11:31
Speaker 4: same first class. I mean, how are.
• 1:11:34
Speaker 1: You, Sarah? As they shake hands warmly.
• 1:11:38
Speaker 9: Oh, Len, it's good for sore eyes to see you.
• 1:11:41
Speaker 9: I've been waiting and hoping and praying, expecting you every minute,
• 1:11:46
Speaker 9: and now you're here, I declare I could almost hug you.
• 1:11:51
Speaker 4: Why all most make it a real one?
• 1:11:53
  Speaker 2: Oh?
• 1:11:54
Speaker 9: Len, I've almost died here this last week, with six
• 1:11:57
Speaker 9: or eight months in it. It's been too.
• 1:12:01
Speaker 4: ShW that'll never do. I thought you were the brave one.
• 1:12:04
Speaker 4: It won't do for you to give.
• 1:12:06
Speaker 9: Up, no, of course, and I don't mean to, but well,
• 1:12:11
Speaker 9: it's the lonesomeness of it. I'm like a cat in
• 1:12:14
Speaker 9: a strange garret and as homesick as anything. At least
• 1:12:18
Speaker 9: I suppose that's what the feeling is. I've got here
• 1:12:21
Speaker 9: and here and oh all over me. But sit down,
• 1:12:26
Speaker 9: Lennon and tell me everything.
• 1:12:29
Speaker 1: They sit Leonard, pretending to misunderstand her.
• 1:12:34
Speaker 4: Well, when I left, the brindle cow was beginning to
• 1:12:37
Speaker 4: wean her calf. The pigs were fatter never and just
• 1:12:40
Speaker 4: fit to kill. Aaron Flint seemed to be getting along
• 1:12:42
  Speaker 4: a little better in a certain direction. I guess they're
• 1:12:45
Speaker 4: being left there alone sort of softens the obdurate lady
• 1:12:48
  Speaker 4: and anything.
• 1:12:49
Speaker 9: Else, Leonard feel more. You know, it isn't all that
• 1:12:54
Speaker 9: I want to know. Of course, it's that too, And
• 1:12:58
Speaker 9: I'm glad if Lillianne has begun given a little, though
• 1:13:01
Speaker 9: goodness knows its time. But it's my Boylen Dick, how
• 1:13:06
Speaker 9: is he? Where is he?
• 1:13:08
Speaker 4: And Oh, he's well and safe and not far off.
• 1:13:12
Speaker 4: But first I want to hear about you. How do
• 1:13:14
Speaker 4: you like it here?
• 1:13:16
Speaker 9: Ah, as well as could be expected, I suppose me
• 1:13:20
Speaker 9: in this high falutin place, but I've wished I was
• 1:13:23
Speaker 9: back home every minute. Such foolishness, such extravagance.
• 1:13:29
Speaker 4: Well it was your own doings. You would do it,
• 1:13:33
  Speaker 4: you know, Yes.
• 1:13:34
Speaker 9: I know, and I'm not sorry as I know of.
• 1:13:37
Speaker 9: But it's something terrible the way em has lived and
• 1:13:40
Speaker 9: got into debt trying to keep up appearances, as she
• 1:13:45
Speaker 9: calls it. It's simply scandalous. A butler and everything land.
• 1:13:50
Speaker 9: He's the stiffest thing in the shape of a man
• 1:13:52
Speaker 9: I ever did see. I was fairly afraid of him
• 1:13:55
Speaker 9: at first, the way he puffed himself up and said yes, Madam, no, madam,
• 1:14:02
Speaker 9: and Madam this and Madam that, till I up and
• 1:14:06
Speaker 9: told him I want them madam, and had no desire
• 1:14:09
Speaker 9: to be And wouldn't he please just call me miss
• 1:14:11
Speaker 9: newcom I'm beginning to get a little bit used to
• 1:14:16
Speaker 9: him now, and to a few other things. But I declare,
• 1:14:21
Speaker 9: I guess the farm's the place for me.
• 1:14:23
Speaker 4: Nonsense, I trust you with the best of them they
• 1:14:27
Speaker 4: can't make a fool of you too late.
• 1:14:30
Speaker 9: Maybe, but maybe it'd be just as well to let
• 1:14:33
Speaker 9: some folks think they can. Who Why, Well, some of
• 1:14:38
Speaker 9: the city folks kind of think us from the country
• 1:14:42
Speaker 9: are all as green as grass. Maybe I can get
• 1:14:46
Speaker 9: the best of some of them and find out a
• 1:14:48
Speaker 9: few things all the easier if I let him think
• 1:14:51
  Speaker 9: I don't know a streetcar from a steamboat. Not but
• 1:14:54
Speaker 9: what I do. And I guess I can see through
• 1:14:57
Speaker 9: a barn door when it's wide open.
• 1:15:00
Speaker 4: Well, I should say you can.
• 1:15:03
Speaker 9: But if some of the big bug detectives and all
• 1:15:06
Speaker 9: that are trying to find Dick and prove he's what
• 1:15:10
Speaker 9: they'll say he is, think I'm but a poor, simple,
• 1:15:14
Speaker 9: little old maid from the country, why, I guess it'll
• 1:15:18
Speaker 9: make the way all the clearer for me when I
• 1:15:20
Speaker 9: try to show him a thing or two.
• 1:15:22
Speaker 4: Well, now, I don't know, but there's something in that.
• 1:15:26
Speaker 9: I'm here to save my boy, and it's any means
• 1:15:29
Speaker 9: to that end. You know how crazy I've always been
• 1:15:32
Speaker 9: about reading those detective stories, lynn murder mysteries and such trash.
• 1:15:39
Speaker 4: You call him mah, Yes, I guess you've read a hundred.
• 1:15:43
Speaker 9: Say seven hundred and you'll be nearer to it. Well,
• 1:15:46
Speaker 9: I'm glad I have. They've sort of given me an
• 1:15:49
Speaker 9: insight into things, clues and such. I feel as if
• 1:15:53
Speaker 9: I could beat the best detective in New York City
• 1:15:56
Speaker 9: at his own game.
• 1:15:58
  Speaker 1: Uh.
• 1:15:58
Speaker 9: I'd like the chance, and maybe i'll have it before
• 1:16:01
  Speaker 9: we get through.
• 1:16:02
Speaker 4: I guess you'll find it a hard job, Miss Newcomb.
• 1:16:05
Speaker 4: They're a slick lot, and I'm afraid in this instance
• 1:16:08
Speaker 4: they'll have it pretty much their own way to tell
• 1:16:11
Speaker 4: the truth. I don't see a loophole as yet, but
• 1:16:13
  Speaker 4: there must.
• 1:16:14
Speaker 9: Be one, Len, There's got to be there, always is
• 1:16:19
Speaker 9: in all those detective stories, the one you're sure did
• 1:16:23
Speaker 9: it and that everything's against never did. It's when they
• 1:16:27
Speaker 9: come up against a blank wall and you think there's
• 1:16:30
Speaker 9: no way around, through or over that A way opens
• 1:16:34
Speaker 9: up after all, and there will this time, Len.
• 1:16:38
Speaker 4: There must, I hope.
• 1:16:40
  Speaker 1: So.
• 1:16:41
Speaker 4: But don't you think you need a bigger man than
• 1:16:43
Speaker 4: I am to help you, Miss Newcombe. I'm only a
• 1:16:45
Speaker 4: country lawyer, after all, you know, without much experience.
• 1:16:49
Speaker 9: Now see here, Len fillmore, don't you begin that all
• 1:16:52
Speaker 9: over again? You know my opinion, and that ends it.
• 1:16:56
Speaker 9: If you're not what they call a big man. Yet
• 1:16:59
Speaker 9: you go to be and maybe this is your chance
• 1:17:02
Speaker 9: to prove it. I want you to show him what
• 1:17:05
Speaker 9: you can do, you and me together in spite of
• 1:17:08
Speaker 9: the best of them. They may think we are two
• 1:17:11
Speaker 9: greenies from the country and as easy as pie. Well
• 1:17:16
Speaker 9: let them think so till we open their eyes and
• 1:17:19
Speaker 9: show them a thing or two.
• 1:17:21
Speaker 1: Leonard giving her his hand, we will put it there.
• 1:17:26
Speaker 9: That's the way to talk. Go ahead, don't leave a
• 1:17:29
Speaker 9: stone unturned till we've overthrown that stone wall we're up against.
• 1:17:34
Speaker 9: I'm back of you with all I've got to my
• 1:17:36
Speaker 9: last scent. All I can beg borrow or I was
• 1:17:41
Speaker 9: going to say steal, and I don't know, but I
• 1:17:44
Speaker 9: do even that to save Dick. But where is he?
• 1:17:48
  Speaker 9: Can't I see him?
• 1:17:49
Speaker 4: Sure he's right here here in.
• 1:17:52
Speaker 9: This house, and you haven't told me all this time.
• 1:17:56
Speaker 1: Going up looking off left up r entrance, excited?
• 1:18:00
Speaker 9: Where is he? I want to.
• 1:18:01
Speaker 4: See him, and so you shall. But I want to
• 1:18:05
Speaker 4: be sure his mother doesn't know he is here. Helen Uh,
• 1:18:09
Speaker 4: Miss Brewster thinks it best for her not to know
• 1:18:12
  Speaker 4: about it.
• 1:18:12
Speaker 9: Yet there is no danger. She's gone to her room
• 1:18:16
Speaker 9: and won't come down till dinner's ready. Probably where's Helen?
• 1:18:20
Speaker 9: Have you seen her?
• 1:18:22
  Speaker 1: Mm? Why?
• 1:18:23
Speaker 4: She just went in what they call the library to
• 1:18:25
Speaker 4: see a caller A he one?
• 1:18:28
Speaker 9: Oh, I suppose it's that rich mister Dearing. Her mother's
• 1:18:31
Speaker 9: trying to catch for her. She can't endure him, and
• 1:18:35
Speaker 9: I know it since she saw a certain other.
• 1:18:38
Speaker 4: He I could mention, Miss Newcombe, you're on the wrong scent.
• 1:18:43
Speaker 4: There isn't a chance in the world for me who.
• 1:18:47
Speaker 9: Said anything about you? I guess there's more than two
• 1:18:50
Speaker 9: he's in the world at any rate. She ain't good
• 1:18:54
Speaker 9: enough for you vain stuck up thing.
• 1:18:57
Speaker 4: No, she isn't that you wrong her?
• 1:19:01
Speaker 9: Oh? Sticking up for her? Are you sure a sign?
• 1:19:05
Speaker 9: I guess you can't fool me. I've read too many
• 1:19:09
Speaker 9: detective stories, you know, not to see a clue when
• 1:19:12
Speaker 9: it's laying around loose. And I've found a pretty good
• 1:19:15
Speaker 9: one some time ago in that direction.
• 1:19:18
Speaker 4: But don't you think you're up against another stone wall?
• 1:19:22
Speaker 9: Well only if I am. I'm pretty good at climbing over,
• 1:19:25
Speaker 9: and I might give you a boost if necessary.
• 1:19:29
Speaker 4: Thanks, I guess I'll need it.
• 1:19:31
Speaker 1: He has gone up to left upper exit.
• 1:19:34
Speaker 4: She is close to him, and now I'll get deck exit.
• 1:19:38
Speaker 1: Leonard left up exit. Sarah stands looks off anxiously. There
• 1:19:44
Speaker 1: is a short pause that Dick enters left upper entrance, cautiously,
• 1:19:49
Speaker 1: looking about as if afraid. He looks much neater than
• 1:19:54
Speaker 1: in first act, but is still pale, showing signs of
• 1:19:58
Speaker 1: his fear and worry. Sarah welcomes him, joyously, taking him
• 1:20:04
Speaker 1: in her arms in silence. He brightens a bit as
• 1:20:08
Speaker 1: he sees her. Sarah, after a moment's pause.
• 1:20:13
Speaker 9: Dick, my boy, my poor boy.
• 1:20:17
Speaker 11: Is nobody else here? Mother, Helen?
• 1:20:21
Speaker 9: Not now? You can see Helen in a few minutes.
• 1:20:24
Speaker 9: Maybe I don't know about your mother. She doesn't know yet.
• 1:20:28
Speaker 9: And uh, but we'll see. Just now. I want you
• 1:20:31
Speaker 9: to talk to me a little.
• 1:20:33
Speaker 1: She has led him to Davenport left sits by his side.
• 1:20:39
Speaker 9: How are you, Dick? Keeping up bravely?
• 1:20:42
Speaker 11: I'm trying to aunt Sarah, but it's hard. It's been
• 1:20:46
Speaker 11: almost more than I could stand. If it wasn't for
• 1:20:49
Speaker 11: you and mister Fillmore, I guess i'd end it all.
• 1:20:53
  Speaker 11: I couldn't face it alone. I don't know as I
• 1:20:56
Speaker 11: can anyway. There doesn't seem to be a chance for me.
• 1:20:59
  Speaker 11: Not a chance.
• 1:21:00
Speaker 9: Why, yes, there is, Dick, there's always a chance. I
• 1:21:06
Speaker 9: believe in you, so does he. And there's sure to
• 1:21:09
Speaker 9: be some way of proving your innocence. We're going to
• 1:21:13
Speaker 9: find it too and save you, aren't we.
• 1:21:16
Speaker 1: Lenn Leonard has been standing right, not listening to them.
• 1:21:21
Speaker 1: He has looked off right in a manner that shows
• 1:21:25
Speaker 1: he is thinking of Helen and her companion. He now
• 1:21:29
Speaker 1: turns comes to Santa.
• 1:21:31
Speaker 4: Sure, of course we are.
• 1:21:34
Speaker 11: You say that, but if you meant it, if you
• 1:21:36
Speaker 11: really wanted to save me, you'd let me get away.
• 1:21:39
Speaker 11: You wouldn't ask me to stay here and face it. No,
• 1:21:43
Speaker 11: nor you either, Aunt, Sarah. I tell you I can't.
• 1:21:47
Speaker 1: He springs up as if to go. Sarah detains him.
• 1:21:51
Speaker 4: Dick, my boy, there there, you'll be all right. You
• 1:21:55
Speaker 4: must listen to reason.
• 1:21:58
Speaker 11: Reason, reason you call it, reason for me to stay
• 1:22:01
Speaker 11: here and give myself up without a chance in the world.
• 1:22:05
Speaker 11: I tell you they've got it on me. But if
• 1:22:07
Speaker 11: I don't give myself up, they'll never find me. They can't.
• 1:22:10
Speaker 11: They don't know my name or anything. I'll be safe
• 1:22:14
Speaker 11: if you'll only let me go away.
• 1:22:17
Speaker 9: Are you sure they don't any of them.
• 1:22:20
Speaker 11: No, No, of course they don't. Miss Navarro was the
• 1:22:23
Speaker 11: only one. The maid never saw me before, nor that man.
• 1:22:28
Speaker 11: I got away before anybody else came. I tell you,
• 1:22:31
Speaker 11: they haven't got a chance in the world. Let me go,
• 1:22:34
Speaker 11: you will, you must. You don't want me to stay
• 1:22:37
Speaker 11: here and get hanged for what I never did. You
• 1:22:40
Speaker 11: can't make me do that, You can't.
• 1:22:42
Speaker 1: He breaks down, sinking on couch and covering face with hands.
• 1:22:48
Speaker 1: Sarah sits by him, striving to comfort him.
• 1:22:52
Speaker 4: You're sure nobody knows that it was you in that
• 1:22:55
Speaker 4: woman's room when she was killed. Not the man nor
• 1:22:58
  Speaker 4: the maid.
• 1:22:59
Speaker 11: No, Oh, neither of them ever saw me before. I
• 1:23:03
Speaker 11: used to meet miss Navarre at the stage door and
• 1:23:05
Speaker 11: take her out to supper. But that night was the
• 1:23:07
Speaker 11: first time she ever let me go home with her.
• 1:23:10
Speaker 11: She didn't want to ben, but I went, so, you see,
• 1:23:14
Speaker 11: her maid never had seen me. And as for that
• 1:23:16
Speaker 11: man who was there, he was a perfect stranger to me.
• 1:23:20
Speaker 4: If that's so, why the police haven't a thing to
• 1:23:23
Speaker 4: go by, no name, no picture, so long as neither
• 1:23:27
Speaker 4: of those two sees you.
• 1:23:29
Speaker 9: But would you want him to run away?
• 1:23:31
Speaker 4: If we believe him innocent and that is his only chance,
• 1:23:35
Speaker 4: as it seems to be. I don't know, but it
• 1:23:38
Speaker 4: would be the best thing for him to do.
• 1:23:40
Speaker 11: Yes, Yes, of course it is. That's what I've been
• 1:23:44
Speaker 11: trying to tell you all along, only you wouldn't listen
• 1:23:46
Speaker 11: to me. If I go away somewhere, it'll be all right.
• 1:23:51
Speaker 11: But if they find out who I am and catch me,
• 1:23:54
Speaker 11: I tell you everything is dead against me. Unless you
• 1:23:56
Speaker 11: let me go away, you will, won't you, don't you see,
• 1:24:01
Speaker 11: Aunt Sarah. It's my only chance.
• 1:24:04
Speaker 9: I must be some way of finding out the truth.
• 1:24:07
Speaker 9: You're innocent, Dick. I believe that, and I mean to
• 1:24:11
Speaker 9: go to work and prove it.
• 1:24:13
Speaker 11: But if you couldn't, if you failed.
• 1:24:17
Speaker 4: Yes, miss Newcombe, we've got to think of that, if
• 1:24:20
Speaker 4: you failed, and I'm afraid the chances are that you would.
• 1:24:24
Speaker 4: I've been looking into the matter thoroughly, trying to see
• 1:24:26
Speaker 4: what defense we could put up, and I must confess
• 1:24:30
Speaker 4: it looks pretty dubious. The police say all they have
• 1:24:33
Speaker 4: to do is find their man. They've put their machine
• 1:24:35
Speaker 4: to work to find them, and it's more than likely
• 1:24:38
Speaker 4: they'll succeed if Dick stays here.
• 1:24:41
Speaker 11: When can I go tonight?
• 1:24:44
  Speaker 7: Now?
• 1:24:45
  Speaker 8: Oh?
• 1:24:45
Speaker 9: Not? Tonight. You can't go tonight, Dick. You must stay
• 1:24:49
Speaker 9: here till tomorrow morning. Then mister Fillmore can see that
• 1:24:52
  Speaker 9: you get away. If that's what's best. And I don't
• 1:24:56
Speaker 9: know what it is.
• 1:24:57
Speaker 11: You must be saved, Dick, But I can't wait.
• 1:25:02
Speaker 4: I'm afraid he's right. He must go tonight. You keep
• 1:25:06
Speaker 4: him here for an hour or so, Miss Newcombe, and
• 1:25:09
Speaker 4: in the meantime, I'll go and get some things ready,
• 1:25:11
Speaker 4: buy a ticket, and then come back for him. But
• 1:25:14
Speaker 4: where to Where shall he go?
• 1:25:16
Speaker 9: Why not to the farm? Lily Anne and Aaron would
• 1:25:19
  Speaker 9: look after him.
• 1:25:21
Speaker 4: No, not yet. They might trace him there through his mother.
• 1:25:24
Speaker 4: They do all sorts of unlikely things. You know, he'll
• 1:25:26
Speaker 4: have to go farther away, say to the west. I'll
• 1:25:29
Speaker 4: buy a ticket. He can leave late tonight.
• 1:25:32
Speaker 11: Yes, I know I can do it.
• 1:25:35
Speaker 1: He braces up, looking more hopeful. Rising, Leonard starts up left.
• 1:25:42
Speaker 9: All right, just as you say, Lenn, you go and
• 1:25:45
Speaker 9: make the arrangements. I'll take Dick up to my room.
• 1:25:48
Speaker 9: Nobody will see him there. But I suppose we'd better
• 1:25:52
  Speaker 9: tell Helen.
• 1:25:53
Speaker 4: Yes, it would be best to let her know. We
• 1:25:56
Speaker 4: can still keep it from his mother.
• 1:25:58
Speaker 1: Leonard goes up about to exit, but Paus's looks off right.
• 1:26:03
Speaker 4: They are coming, miss Brewster, and.
• 1:26:06
Speaker 1: Dick starts to go. Sarah holds him, then leads him
• 1:26:10
Speaker 1: to left, second exit.
• 1:26:12
Speaker 9: Here, come in here till he goes, then I'll get
• 1:26:15
  Speaker 9: you upstairs.
• 1:26:17
Speaker 1: Excellent. Sarah and Dick left second exit. Leonard glances right,
• 1:26:23
Speaker 1: then goes up, gets hut and coat exits left up
• 1:26:27
Speaker 1: exit and to Helen and dearing right. She seems somewhat disturbed.
• 1:26:35
Speaker 1: He shows evidence of anger and chakra.
• 1:26:39
Speaker 7: Do you mean to say that this is your final answer?
• 1:26:42
  Speaker 7: You refuse me?
• 1:26:43
Speaker 6: Yes, I cannot be your wife, mister Daren. I don't
• 1:26:48
  Speaker 6: love you.
• 1:26:49
Speaker 7: But if I am willing to wait, to run the
• 1:26:52
Speaker 7: chance of being able to win your.
• 1:26:53
Speaker 6: Love, love does not come like that.
• 1:26:56
  Speaker 1: I hesitates meaningly.
• 1:27:00
Speaker 7: I see you don't think I am fit.
• 1:27:03
Speaker 6: It is sufficient that I say I do not care
• 1:27:06
Speaker 6: to be your wife.
• 1:27:08
Speaker 7: It was not so long ago, not many weeks or
• 1:27:11
Speaker 7: days since you seemed rather inclined to consider the transaction.
• 1:27:16
Speaker 7: Perhaps you have met the man whom you can regard.
• 1:27:20
  Speaker 7: I think I understand.
• 1:27:22
Speaker 6: I cannot help what you think. There is no more
• 1:27:24
  Speaker 6: to be said.
• 1:27:26
Speaker 1: Starts right about to go out.
• 1:27:29
Speaker 7: You may change your mind. A woman does sometimes, you know.
• 1:27:33
Speaker 7: If so, you may find the the proposition still open.
• 1:27:39
Speaker 6: No, please, you will excuse me.
• 1:27:43
Speaker 1: She turns from him, rings bell and goes up right,
• 1:27:47
Speaker 1: after slight pause and to hensome left, apprenchans.
• 1:27:52
Speaker 6: The gentleman's hat and coat.
• 1:27:54
Speaker 1: Please, Henson, She bows coolly and exits right. Hearing stands
• 1:28:01
Speaker 1: looking after her resentment, then anger, with a mean, vindictive
• 1:28:06
Speaker 1: expression dawning upon his face. Then he smiles derisively, stops, listens,
• 1:28:13
Speaker 1: and goes and looks off left. Second Exit stands looking
• 1:28:18
Speaker 1: off with growing interest. Henson has gone out left up.
• 1:28:23
Speaker 1: Exit now returns with Deering's hat and coat. Stands up
• 1:28:28
  Speaker 1: left waiting.
• 1:28:30
Speaker 7: Look who is that in there?
• 1:28:33
Speaker 1: Henson coming down looking off left?
• 1:28:36
Speaker 7: You mean, sir, there the young man talking to miss
• 1:28:41
Speaker 7: Newcombe and the others.
• 1:28:43
Speaker 10: That sir, Why that's mister Richard.
• 1:28:47
Speaker 7: You mean missus Brewster's son, Miss Helen's brother.
• 1:28:51
Speaker 10: Why, yes, sir, I.
• 1:28:54
Speaker 7: See that will do? Thank you. You needn't wait.
• 1:28:59
Speaker 1: Very well, sir, exitense and right. Deering is still looking
• 1:29:06
Speaker 1: off left with renewed interest, which becomes repressed excitement with
• 1:29:11
Speaker 1: something of exultation. He pauses a moment, then, with a
• 1:29:17
Speaker 1: gloating smile, goes up and takes the telephone receiver.
• 1:29:22
Speaker 7: Hello, Hello, give me police headquarters. Yes, the Bureau of Police,
• 1:29:30
Speaker 7: the Chief of Police at once, please waits feverishly.
• 1:29:36
Speaker 1: There is an appreciable pause. Then he speaks again, with
• 1:29:40
Speaker 1: tones that thrill with tense impatience.
• 1:29:44
Speaker 7: Yes, Yes, is this police headquarters? Yes, the chief, It
• 1:29:51
  Speaker 7: is most important.
• 1:29:53
Speaker 1: There is another pause, during which, holding the receiver to
• 1:29:57
Speaker 1: his ear, deering glances towards lef aft with a look
• 1:30:01
  Speaker 1: of vengeful triumph.
• 1:30:03
Speaker 7: Hello, is this the chief of police? All right? Never
• 1:30:09
Speaker 7: mind who this is. You are looking for the man
• 1:30:11
Speaker 7: who killed miss Navarre, Laura Navarre, the actress, about two
• 1:30:16
Speaker 7: weeks ago. Well, his name is Brewster, Richard Brewster. You
• 1:30:22
Speaker 7: will find him at his home one seven six Ellington Avenue. Yes,
• 1:30:27
Speaker 7: Ellington one seven six. He is there now, But lose
• 1:30:33
Speaker 7: no time. Send at once, or it will be too late.
• 1:30:37
Speaker 1: He hangs up receiver, takes coat and hat, glances once
• 1:30:42
Speaker 1: more towards left second exit with a smile of wicked satisfaction,
• 1:30:48
Speaker 1: tosses his head slightly knowingly, and exits quickly left Napper
• 1:30:54
Speaker 1: exit curtain. End of Act two Act three, scene parlor
• 1:31:03
Speaker 1: of a small apartment uptown, New York, well but not
• 1:31:07
Speaker 1: elaborately furnished. There is it all right? Leading to a
• 1:31:12
Speaker 1: small entry with another door beyond to hall door or
• 1:31:17
Speaker 1: narrow archway left with sick draperies parted in center, telephone,
• 1:31:22
Speaker 1: et cetera. Discover Dick Brewster sitting center. He is ghastly pale,
• 1:31:29
Speaker 1: looking exhausted, his head drooping, eyes nearly closed, hands hanging
• 1:31:35
Speaker 1: limply over sides of chair. He has just been put
• 1:31:39
Speaker 1: through the third degree and is almost a mental and
• 1:31:44
Speaker 1: physical wreck. He is muttering in a final gasp of
• 1:31:49
Speaker 1: denial to the demands that he confess. Henry Markham, the detective,
• 1:31:56
Speaker 1: stands at his left, looking sternly down at him. Higgins,
• 1:32:01
Speaker 1: an officer in uniform, write senta somewhat back Dick, shaking
• 1:32:08
Speaker 1: heads slowly and speaking in wavering tones.
• 1:32:12
  Speaker 11: No, No, I didn't, I didn't do it.
• 1:32:16
Speaker 1: Markham sternly seizing his shoulder, shaking him roughly.
• 1:32:21
Speaker 12: Come now, stop that faking. You've got life enough in
• 1:32:26
Speaker 12: you if you wanted to show it. You can't fool me.
• 1:32:30
Speaker 12: The sooner you make a clean breast of this thing,
• 1:32:32
Speaker 12: the better it'll be.
• 1:32:33
Speaker 11: For you. No, no, I can't.
• 1:32:37
Speaker 12: You stood behind those curtains and fired the shot that
• 1:32:41
Speaker 12: killed that woman, the woman that threw you over. And
• 1:32:45
Speaker 12: we can prove it if you own up to it
• 1:32:48
Speaker 12: and tell us all about it, so we know what
• 1:32:51
Speaker 12: your provocation was. Why, then you'll get some mercy. But
• 1:32:56
  Speaker 12: if you.
• 1:32:56
Speaker 1: Don't, Dick still shakes his head weakly, murmuring a refusal.
• 1:33:03
Speaker 4: Pluggy, little guy, eighty bus.
• 1:33:06
Speaker 1: You don't look as if you'd The doorbell rings.
• 1:33:09
Speaker 12: Right, that'll do for you. No remarks from the gallery.
• 1:33:13
Speaker 12: See who that is and whoever it is, tell him
• 1:33:16
Speaker 12: they can't come in, and to left.
• 1:33:19
Speaker 1: Delphine the French maid, without looking to right or left,
• 1:33:23
Speaker 1: she goes to right to open the door, but Higgins
• 1:33:27
Speaker 1: is ahead of her. He opens door, goes into entry.
• 1:33:31
Speaker 1: Delphine goes back to left, exits that stands behind curtains,
• 1:33:36
Speaker 1: peering through listening. Markham sees her glances in her direction,
• 1:33:42
Speaker 1: and she disappears, pulling curtains together. Higgins enters right, cautiously,
• 1:33:49
Speaker 1: holding the door slightly open. Here's that young lawyer.
• 1:33:53
  Speaker 4: Feller and Fillmore.
• 1:33:55
Speaker 12: Don't know what right he has here.
• 1:33:58
Speaker 1: Tell them he can't come Inhiggins is about to go
• 1:34:01
Speaker 1: out right when the door is pushed open and Leonard enters,
• 1:34:05
Speaker 1: thrusting him aside. He is followed by Sarah, who at
• 1:34:10
Speaker 1: once sees Dick and goes to him, kneeling by his
• 1:34:14
Speaker 1: side in spite of Markham, who is too surprised to
• 1:34:18
  Speaker 1: prevent her.
• 1:34:19
Speaker 9: Dick, Oh, Dick, what have they been doing to you?
• 1:34:23
  Speaker 8: Dick?
• 1:34:24
Speaker 9: I am here, your aunt, Sarah, look at me, Dick.
• 1:34:28
  Speaker 6: Dick.
• 1:34:29
Speaker 1: Dick falls over lifelessly into her arms. She fondles him.
• 1:34:35
Speaker 12: What's all this? Where did this woman come from? She
• 1:34:39
  Speaker 12: has no right.
• 1:34:40
Speaker 1: Here, addressing Leonard nor you either.
• 1:34:44
Speaker 4: I don't know no law against coming in. I guess
• 1:34:47
Speaker 4: seeing we rang the bell and somebody opened the door. Anyhow,
• 1:34:51
  Speaker 4: we're here.
• 1:34:52
Speaker 12: So I see, and I'd like to know what it means.
• 1:34:56
Speaker 12: How'd you find out? It wasn't given out down a
• 1:34:59
Speaker 12: headquart orders are reckoned?
• 1:35:01
Speaker 4: I found out though. It seems I heard you were
• 1:35:04
Speaker 4: going to put this boy through your villainous third degree,
• 1:35:07
Speaker 4: and I would have managed to prevent it some way
• 1:35:10
Speaker 4: if i'd known it in time.
• 1:35:12
Speaker 12: Oh, you would think you've got a lot of influence,
• 1:35:15
Speaker 12: don't you. Well maybe you have back in that Jayburg
• 1:35:19
Speaker 12: where you come from. But I guess you can't very
• 1:35:22
Speaker 12: well upset the whole New York Police Department and the
• 1:35:25
Speaker 12: Detective Force. We haven't got through with this young fellow yet,
• 1:35:29
Speaker 12: and you won't find it wise to interfere.
• 1:35:33
Speaker 1: Sarah placing Dick's head against backutcher and springing up facing
• 1:35:38
  Speaker 1: Markham boldly, Well.
• 1:35:41
Speaker 9: I'll interfere. I won't let you torture this poor boy anymore.
• 1:35:45
Speaker 9: Look at him, what sheep he's in. It's wicked, shameful.
• 1:35:51
Speaker 9: How can you do it? And it's cruel. It isn't fair.
• 1:35:56
Speaker 12: Excuse me, madam, but I guess we know our business
• 1:36:00
Speaker 12: and what's riding fair. Without any advice from anybody, we
• 1:36:04
Speaker 12: brought this young fellow here where he committed that crime,
• 1:36:08
Speaker 12: to make him confess, and if he knows what's best
• 1:36:10
Speaker 12: for him, he'll do it.
• 1:36:12
Speaker 9: Confess confess to something he never did. No, never, He
• 1:36:19
Speaker 9: shan't do that. You can't make him do it.
• 1:36:22
Speaker 4: I wouldn't interfere, Miss Newcomb if I were you to welcome.
• 1:36:27
Speaker 4: I don't believe you want to do anything unjust m inadvisable.
• 1:36:32
Speaker 4: I mean you must see that my client is in
• 1:36:34
Speaker 4: no condition to stand anymore. It looks like you'd put
• 1:36:38
Speaker 4: him through a pretty severe ordeal. Already. Give the poor
• 1:36:41
Speaker 4: boy a chance, huh.
• 1:36:44
Speaker 12: Yes, he had a chance, all right, a chance to
• 1:36:47
Speaker 12: skip with your help. It seems if we hadn't gotten
• 1:36:50
Speaker 12: a tip and been a little too quick for you.
• 1:36:53
Speaker 12: We got there just in time. It seems to catch
• 1:36:55
Speaker 12: the bird almost on the wing. What kind of business
• 1:36:59
Speaker 12: you call that? For a lawyer helping a murderer to escape.
• 1:37:03
Speaker 4: We believe the boy to be innocent. I am his attorney.
• 1:37:07
Speaker 4: I wanted time to look up evidence, to prepare a defense.
• 1:37:11
Speaker 12: To get him away. You mean, because you know there
• 1:37:14
Speaker 12: ain't a chance for him. Well, you see you didn't
• 1:37:17
  Speaker 12: do it.
• 1:37:19
Speaker 1: Seize his hold of dick, trying to make him rise.
• 1:37:22
Speaker 12: Come come along. You needn't try any more of that,
• 1:37:25
Speaker 12: pretending I know all about that?
• 1:37:28
Speaker 9: What what are you going to do with him?
• 1:37:31
Speaker 12: Going to finish our job?
• 1:37:33
  Speaker 11: Of course?
• 1:37:34
Speaker 12: You don't think we ever give up, do you?
• 1:37:37
  Speaker 7: Yes not.
• 1:37:38
Speaker 12: We got just a little more to say to this chap,
• 1:37:41
Speaker 12: just as soon as you'll be so oblige and as
• 1:37:43
Speaker 12: to leave beg Pardon madam for seeming impolite, But business
• 1:37:48
Speaker 12: is business, and duty's duty.
• 1:37:51
Speaker 9: But can't you see he isn't able to stand any more?
• 1:37:55
Speaker 9: Look at him. He's nothing but a poor, weak, scared boy.
• 1:38:00
Speaker 12: I guess I know what he is. All right, you'll
• 1:38:03
Speaker 12: have to stand aside, Madam.
• 1:38:05
Speaker 1: Sarah has sunk down by chair, holding Dick in her
• 1:38:09
Speaker 1: arms as if to shield him. Markham starts to take
• 1:38:13
Speaker 1: hold of him. Leonard, who stands right center, looks on
• 1:38:17
Speaker 1: as if doubtful. Just what to do. Higgins comes down,
• 1:38:22
Speaker 1: stands near Markham left center.
• 1:38:25
Speaker 12: Come, you might as well get up. I got a
• 1:38:28
Speaker 12: few things to say to you yet.
• 1:38:30
Speaker 4: See here, mister Markham, don't you think you can call
• 1:38:33
Speaker 4: it off for the present.
• 1:38:35
Speaker 12: I know when it's time to call things off. What
• 1:38:38
Speaker 12: I want you to do is take this lady and
• 1:38:40
Speaker 12: get out. This is serious business and we're losing time.
• 1:38:45
Speaker 4: Very well. I suppose we must submit, patting Dick on back,
• 1:38:50
Speaker 4: Brace up, my boy, don't give in. We will have
• 1:38:53
Speaker 4: to go now, but we shan't forget you a minute.
• 1:38:56
Speaker 1: Remember that Dick reaching up his hand, which Leonard grasps.
• 1:39:02
  Speaker 11: Thanks. I know, I'll try.
• 1:39:06
Speaker 1: Leonard dropping Dick's hand, taking Sarah by arm, assisting her
• 1:39:11
  Speaker 1: to rise.
• 1:39:12
Speaker 4: Come, miss Newcombe we'll have to go now. I'm sorry,
• 1:39:15
Speaker 4: but we'll have to.
• 1:39:16
Speaker 1: I guess Sarah wants more appealing to Malcolm.
• 1:39:20
Speaker 9: Oh, sir, won't you stop trying to make him say
• 1:39:23
Speaker 9: what he never means to say unless you drive him
• 1:39:26
Speaker 9: to the point where he doesn't know it. He's not
• 1:39:29
Speaker 9: a murderer, that boy. Look at him, can't you tell
• 1:39:33
Speaker 9: he Isn't that kind? Promise me if we go, you'll
• 1:39:37
Speaker 9: let him alone for tonight anyway, and take him back
• 1:39:41
Speaker 9: and let him have some sleep. Why he's all played out,
• 1:39:45
  Speaker 9: just a rag.
• 1:39:47
Speaker 12: I know what to do, madam. You leave it to me.
• 1:39:50
Speaker 9: I'm not madam. I'm just Miss Newcomb from the country
• 1:39:54
Speaker 9: where folks have hearts, and give them that I in
• 1:39:57
Speaker 9: troubled chance instead of kicking him at, grinding him down
• 1:40:01
Speaker 9: and never giving him a fair show. I'm this boy's aunt,
• 1:40:04
Speaker 9: his mother's sister, and I love him as much as
• 1:40:07
Speaker 9: his own mother ever did I guess more? And I
• 1:40:11
Speaker 9: want to help him. Won't you do what I ask?
• 1:40:15
  Speaker 9: Let him?
• 1:40:15
Speaker 12: Excuse me, tain't no use your talking, madam or miss
• 1:40:20
Speaker 12: because I got orders and I'm going to carry him out.
• 1:40:24
Speaker 12: We can't here for a purpose, and we're going to
• 1:40:26
  Speaker 12: stick to it.
• 1:40:27
Speaker 5: So the sooner you.
• 1:40:28
Speaker 12: Get out of the way, the better it'll be for
• 1:40:30
  Speaker 12: all concerned.
• 1:40:32
Speaker 1: Sarah standing over Dick, her hand on his shoulder.
• 1:40:36
Speaker 9: Then you'll have to carry me away, for I'm here
• 1:40:39
Speaker 9: and I won't budge a step, Miss Newcombe.
• 1:40:42
Speaker 12: See here, ma'am. This won't do. It's all foolishness, us
• 1:40:47
Speaker 12: losing time this way. You step aside and let us
• 1:40:50
  Speaker 12: do our duty.
• 1:40:52
Speaker 9: Is it your duty to crush the very life out
• 1:40:55
Speaker 9: of this poor boy? Well, then it's my duty to
• 1:40:59
Speaker 9: stand between him and you and protect him. And I
• 1:41:03
Speaker 9: mean to do it as long as there's a mute
• 1:41:05
Speaker 9: of strength left in my body.
• 1:41:07
Speaker 1: Markham seizing hold of her arm.
• 1:41:10
Speaker 12: See here, I've had enough of this. Either you step
• 1:41:13
Speaker 12: aside or I'll place you.
• 1:41:14
Speaker 4: Under rest, mister Markham.
• 1:41:17
Speaker 12: That's what I said. What do you think I am?
• 1:41:20
Speaker 12: She is interfering with the law.
• 1:41:23
Speaker 1: Sarah wrenches herself free from his grasp, facing him defiantly.
• 1:41:28
Speaker 1: For a moment, he seems too taken aback to interrupt her.
• 1:41:33
Speaker 9: You talk about the law that the likes of you
• 1:41:35
Speaker 9: are chosen to enforce. You, you who are not men
• 1:41:40
Speaker 9: but great ravenous beasts, looking for something to tear to
• 1:41:44
Speaker 9: pieces and devour. You want a victim, What do you
• 1:41:48
Speaker 9: care if it is a poor, weak boy who hasn't
• 1:41:50
Speaker 9: the strength to defend himself. It's all the better for you,
• 1:41:55
Speaker 9: all the easier. It's somebody for you to shake and
• 1:41:58
Speaker 9: choke and grind under your heel till they haven't life
• 1:42:02
Speaker 9: enough left to do anything but give up. What if
• 1:42:05
Speaker 9: he is innocent? You don't think of that. All you
• 1:42:09
Speaker 9: want is to show that you represent the law and
• 1:42:12
Speaker 9: to hold your jobs and prove what great detectives you.
• 1:42:14
Speaker 12: Are, madam, you'd better.
• 1:42:17
Speaker 1: He approaches her menacingly. Leonard also makes an attempt to
• 1:42:23
Speaker 1: silence her, but she thrusts them both aside, still a
• 1:42:27
  Speaker 1: sailing Markham law.
• 1:42:30
Speaker 9: Don't you know there's a law of pity and mercy
• 1:42:33
Speaker 9: and justice as well as one of might and terror,
• 1:42:37
Speaker 9: the kind that puts folks behind prison bars and hangs
• 1:42:40
Speaker 9: them maybe for something they never did. Is it justice
• 1:42:44
Speaker 9: to try to prove a person committed a crime and
• 1:42:47
Speaker 9: never try to prove they didn't. Why don't you look
• 1:42:50
Speaker 9: for something that might help this poor boy instead of
• 1:42:53
Speaker 9: saying he's guilty and letting it go with that? Proofs
• 1:42:58
Speaker 9: you say you have proofs, but you don't mean to
• 1:43:01
Speaker 9: let him prove that you are wrong. You don't want
• 1:43:04
Speaker 9: him to. You're afraid he will. Even if you saw
• 1:43:07
Speaker 9: a chance to save him, you wouldn't take it, cause
• 1:43:10
Speaker 9: then you'd have to go to work all over again.
• 1:43:13
Speaker 9: All you want is a victim, someone to hang. Well,
• 1:43:18
Speaker 9: you shan't have my boy, You shan't. You shan't.
• 1:43:23
Speaker 1: She finally gives up, partly exhausted again, sinks down on
• 1:43:29
Speaker 1: floor by Dick shielding him, still looking up at Markham defiantly,
• 1:43:34
Speaker 1: though with wavering strength. He has stood, looking at her,
• 1:43:40
Speaker 1: at first angrily, then dumbfounded, finally with a half good
• 1:43:46
Speaker 1: natured expression. He now shakes his head murmurs, well, I'll
• 1:43:52
Speaker 1: be Leonard to Markham.
• 1:43:55
Speaker 4: She'll be all right, mister Markham, if you'll just let me, oh.
• 1:43:59
Speaker 12: Horror, go ahead. I guess we won't bother any more today.
• 1:44:04
Speaker 4: You mean you'll call it off?
• 1:44:06
Speaker 12: Yes, I guess so for the present, Leonard.
• 1:44:10
Speaker 1: To Sarah, helping her to rise.
• 1:44:13
Speaker 4: Miss Newcombe. It'll be all right now, mister Markham says
• 1:44:16
Speaker 4: they won't carry it any further today.
• 1:44:19
Speaker 1: Sarah, in a sort of days to Markham, you mean you.
• 1:44:24
Speaker 9: Let him rest sleep.
• 1:44:28
Speaker 12: Yes, I guess we can fix it. It's getting laid
• 1:44:31
Speaker 12: and see here, Higgins, we'll take him back now and
• 1:44:35
Speaker 12: postpone this business till tomorrow.
• 1:44:38
Speaker 1: Markham and officer are write center somewhat back Leonard Wright,
• 1:44:43
Speaker 1: Sarah and Dick center. She with armor about him.
• 1:44:47
Speaker 9: Do you hear, Dick? They're going to let you have
• 1:44:50
Speaker 9: some rest now. It'll be all right. You're trying to
• 1:44:54
Speaker 9: be brave, and don't forget I'm not giving up for
• 1:44:58
  Speaker 9: a minute.
• 1:45:00
Speaker 1: With a show of better courage.
• 1:45:02
Speaker 11: I will aunt Sarah. I'm going to brace up and
• 1:45:05
Speaker 11: make the best of it. I didn't mean to give
• 1:45:08
Speaker 11: way like that, but I couldn't help it. They drove
• 1:45:11
  Speaker 11: me to it.
• 1:45:13
Speaker 9: I know, Dick boy, I know. Come now, you'll have
• 1:45:18
Speaker 9: to go, but keep up your courage and we'll save
• 1:45:21
Speaker 9: you yet, you see, if we don't.
• 1:45:25
Speaker 1: She leads him up, he goes with the officer with
• 1:45:28
Speaker 1: an attempt at braveness, smiling faintly at Sarah as she
• 1:45:33
Speaker 1: kisses him with a pat on the shoulder. The officer
• 1:45:37
Speaker 1: takes him out right, followed by Markham, who shakes his
• 1:45:41
Speaker 1: head slightly, as if it were all too much for
• 1:45:44
  Speaker 1: him Leonard Lingers.
• 1:45:47
Speaker 4: Well, I must say no, you mustn't.
• 1:45:51
Speaker 9: You needn't say a word. I know what you think,
• 1:45:55
  Speaker 9: But I ain't crazy, and I wouldn't care if I was.
• 1:45:58
Speaker 9: I got the best of that detective and gave him
• 1:46:00
Speaker 9: a piece of my mind that I hope he won't forget.
• 1:46:03
Speaker 4: Well, I should say you did a pretty generous piece.
• 1:46:07
Speaker 4: But I'm afraid you have a wrong idea as to
• 1:46:09
Speaker 4: what you did to him.
• 1:46:11
Speaker 9: But I made him give up. You think he'll keep
• 1:46:15
Speaker 9: his words, don't you.
• 1:46:16
Speaker 4: Oh? Yes, so far as that goes. But I don't
• 1:46:19
Speaker 4: see as we've gained much except a brief respite for Dick.
• 1:46:22
Speaker 4: Of course that's something, but we might as well face
• 1:46:25
Speaker 4: the facts. We haven't found a clue yet, not a
• 1:46:29
Speaker 4: thing to refute their evidence, not even who gave them
• 1:46:32
Speaker 4: that tip, which upset all our plans. That certainly was
• 1:46:35
  Speaker 4: a blow.
• 1:46:37
Speaker 9: Yes, I almost gave up for a while. It certainly
• 1:46:41
Speaker 9: is a mystery. Somebody knows, somebody who has an object
• 1:46:45
Speaker 9: in causing Dick's arrest, but who who?
• 1:46:50
Speaker 4: He declares. Nobody knew his name but miss Navarre. Nobody
• 1:46:54
Speaker 4: else saw him there except those two. The man in
• 1:46:57
Speaker 4: this French maid deh ever her name is.
• 1:47:01
Speaker 9: Then it was one of them that notified the police.
• 1:47:05
Speaker 9: But how did they know. You haven't found out who
• 1:47:07
  Speaker 9: the man was.
• 1:47:09
Speaker 4: No, there seems to have been a lot of them.
• 1:47:12
Speaker 9: My, she must have been one of them vampire things
• 1:47:15
Speaker 9: it tells about in some of those detective stories, the
• 1:47:18
Speaker 9: kind they have in the movies. Poor thing. Maybe her
• 1:47:22
Speaker 9: fate was no more than she deserved. But to say that, Dick, Len,
• 1:47:28
Speaker 9: something's got to be done for one thing. I'm going
• 1:47:32
Speaker 9: to stay here and talk to that frenchwoman. I may
• 1:47:34
Speaker 9: be able to get something out of her.
• 1:47:37
Speaker 4: I doubt it. She seems to have told all she knows.
• 1:47:40
Speaker 4: The police say her story hangs together. Oh, we can't
• 1:47:43
Speaker 4: get away from it. Everything points to young Brewster, but
• 1:47:47
  Speaker 4: points wrong.
• 1:47:48
Speaker 9: I know it. There's something strange about all this. I
• 1:47:53
Speaker 9: mean something. We haven't even got an inkling off yet. Len,
• 1:47:58
Speaker 9: I want you to go away and leave me. I
• 1:48:00
Speaker 9: want to look around a little and talk to that woman.
• 1:48:04
Speaker 4: I don't see the use. The police have examined everything here,
• 1:48:08
  Speaker 4: so have I.
• 1:48:09
Speaker 9: Yes, I know the police have, and you have, but
• 1:48:14
  Speaker 9: I haven't. I may think I'm too smart then, but
• 1:48:18
Speaker 9: it won't do any hurt for me to try. Something's
• 1:48:21
Speaker 9: got to be done. We are right up against that
• 1:48:24
Speaker 9: blank wall, and I'm going to make a desperate effort
• 1:48:27
Speaker 9: to find a loose stone in it. There must be
• 1:48:30
Speaker 9: a hole in it somewhere, if it's only a chink,
• 1:48:34
Speaker 9: and I shan't give up till I see at least
• 1:48:36
Speaker 9: a speck of light shining through.
• 1:48:38
Speaker 4: Well, I suppose, being a woman, you'll have to have
• 1:48:42
  Speaker 4: your own way.
• 1:48:44
Speaker 9: You ought to know that by this time. So I
• 1:48:47
Speaker 9: want you to go and leave me here for a while.
• 1:48:49
Speaker 4: Hm, I don't know about that. Not so sure it
• 1:48:53
  Speaker 4: would be safe.
• 1:48:54
Speaker 9: Pshah, I guess I can take care of myself. Of course,
• 1:48:58
Speaker 9: you can wait downstairs for me if you want to.
• 1:49:01
Speaker 9: You might come up, say in fifteen minutes or so,
• 1:49:05
Speaker 9: and see if I'm still alive or need any help.
• 1:49:09
Speaker 4: Well, I suppose if you say so, I do so.
• 1:49:14
Speaker 9: Supposing you vanish. I want a chance to look around
• 1:49:17
Speaker 9: and take things in. There may be a clue here somewhere,
• 1:49:21
Speaker 9: just waiting for me to pick it up, and maybe
• 1:49:24
Speaker 9: I can beat the great Markem at his own game.
• 1:49:27
Speaker 9: Tenny rate. I'll feel bitter satisfied to try.
• 1:49:30
Speaker 1: Learn it at door.
• 1:49:32
Speaker 4: Right, very well, there's a telephone. I'll be down in
• 1:49:35
Speaker 4: the office. If you need me, phone down and I'll
• 1:49:38
Speaker 4: come right up. Otherwise I'll wait fifteen minutes.
• 1:49:42
Speaker 9: Wat twenty. You needn't be in such an awful hurry.
• 1:49:45
Speaker 4: Oh all right, take your time. Only remember there's the telephone,
• 1:49:50
  Speaker 4: and be careful.
• 1:49:52
Speaker 9: Oh go on, I know what to do.
• 1:49:55
Speaker 1: Exit, learn it right. Sarah goes and closes door after him,
• 1:50:00
Speaker 1: stands for a moment nob in hand, looking about, then
• 1:50:05
Speaker 1: comes to center, stands gazing around to right to left, up, down,
• 1:50:11
Speaker 1: who's about examining everything closely. She does not appear to
• 1:50:16
Speaker 1: notice the curtains across door left, but gradually working her
• 1:50:21
Speaker 1: way in that direction, suddenly flings them apart, disclosing Delphine,
• 1:50:27
Speaker 1: who has been watching her.
• 1:50:29
Speaker 9: Come right in. I was just going to call.
• 1:50:31
Speaker 1: You, Delphine, entering a bit confused but still self possessed.
• 1:50:37
Speaker 8: Wei, Madame, I I was about to inquire if I
• 1:50:41
Speaker 8: could be of assistance.
• 1:50:43
Speaker 9: That's very kind of you. Seem real anxious, don't.
• 1:50:47
Speaker 8: You, angsos Oh we is such a more madame.
• 1:50:53
Speaker 9: M You've cut it a little different from the rest
• 1:50:55
Speaker 9: of em, haven't you. I suppose that's French madame, meaning
• 1:51:00
Speaker 9: the same as just plain madame in New York language. Well,
• 1:51:05
Speaker 9: I ain't either of them. I'm just miss plain, miss Newcombe,
• 1:51:11
Speaker 9: I see mademoiselle m damselle land sounds like swearing, don't it.
• 1:51:19
Speaker 9: I always heard you French women won't be very particular
• 1:51:21
Speaker 9: how you talked? Come all the way from France, did you?
• 1:51:25
  Speaker 1: Oh?
• 1:51:26
Speaker 8: We a very long time ago, since I am quite patie.
• 1:51:30
Speaker 9: So must feel quite at home here by this time.
• 1:51:34
Speaker 9: Kind of strange you still jab of French talk, seems
• 1:51:38
Speaker 9: so you might know all United States by this time.
• 1:51:42
Speaker 8: Oh, But always I am of my own language, so
• 1:51:45
Speaker 8: fond I don't so much seek to speak the anglais I.
• 1:51:50
Speaker 9: See to memory, dear, as the old song says. Well, anyway,
• 1:51:56
Speaker 9: supposing we sit down for a while and have a
• 1:51:58
Speaker 9: little talk, I'd kind of like to ask you a
• 1:52:01
Speaker 9: few things, if you don't mind.
• 1:52:03
Speaker 8: So so Teman, if Madame wish, but I will stand
• 1:52:08
Speaker 8: to sit also with Madame would not be what you say.
• 1:52:13
  Speaker 8: The thing?
• 1:52:14
Speaker 9: So I suppose maybe it wouldn't, if that's the way
• 1:52:18
Speaker 9: you look at it. Still working here are you?
• 1:52:22
Speaker 8: I stay for a time? Ah, My poor mistress Mademoiselle Nevarre, wiping.
• 1:52:29
Speaker 1: Her eyes, appearing grief stricken.
• 1:52:32
Speaker 8: O pardon, but it is so terrible, such shock as
• 1:52:37
Speaker 8: you say, I have not yet of myself the control.
• 1:52:41
Speaker 8: She was so kind. I am of her so fond.
• 1:52:46
Speaker 9: How long had you worked for her?
• 1:52:48
Speaker 8: Oh? Not for so long a time, a Treemont, Maybe
• 1:52:52
Speaker 8: before I am with her. I cannot now just remember.
• 1:52:57
Speaker 8: Also she treats me as a friend, My poor poor mistress,
• 1:53:01
Speaker 8: who have been so cruelly murdered by that mister Brewster.
• 1:53:06
Speaker 9: Stop don't say that he's my nephew and no murderer.
• 1:53:12
Speaker 9: Oh I know they say he is. You may think
• 1:53:15
Speaker 9: he did it, but I don't. And all the detectives
• 1:53:18
Speaker 9: in New York and the whole police department to boot
• 1:53:21
Speaker 9: couldn't make me believe it.
• 1:53:23
Speaker 8: I beg of Madame de pardon. I mean not to offend,
• 1:53:27
Speaker 8: but it is so plain. There can be no doubt
• 1:53:31
Speaker 8: what I see, I see, what I know.
• 1:53:34
  Speaker 2: I know.
• 1:53:35
Speaker 9: Well, sometimes folks think they see more than they do,
• 1:53:39
Speaker 9: and don't know quite so much as they think they do.
• 1:53:43
Speaker 1: Rising looking about, do.
• 1:53:45
Speaker 9: You mind sort of pointing out just what you did
• 1:53:48
Speaker 9: see what happened here that day that your mistress was killed.
• 1:53:54
Speaker 9: You didn't see it done, did you?
• 1:53:56
Speaker 8: Ah? But yes, almost it was the same I heard.
• 1:54:01
Speaker 8: I saw her, poor miss neval lying there, oh so
• 1:54:06
Speaker 8: cruelly murdered, lying in a little pool of of blood,
• 1:54:11
Speaker 8: her blood. And then then.
• 1:54:15
  Speaker 1: She pauses, shuddering.
• 1:54:18
Speaker 9: But ain't you getting a little ahead of your story? First?
• 1:54:21
Speaker 9: You say you heard heard what a pistol go off?
• 1:54:27
Speaker 8: Go off? Oh we eat make the bang noise? So
• 1:54:33
Speaker 8: just as I come up in the elevator and get
• 1:54:35
Speaker 8: off here at this floor.
• 1:54:37
Speaker 9: So you didn't come on home with miss Nevalre that day.
• 1:54:42
Speaker 8: No, seldom I would do that. Always she would have
• 1:54:46
Speaker 8: some friend, some gentlemen, who would take her out to
• 1:54:50
Speaker 8: suppert escort her home. I am to stay at the
• 1:54:54
Speaker 8: theater in a dressing room, to put away her costumes,
• 1:54:58
Speaker 8: to arrange everything. You no, I come later by and
• 1:55:02
Speaker 8: by when I am true, that is how. But seldom
• 1:55:06
Speaker 8: it is that I come with her.
• 1:55:08
Speaker 9: She had quite a lot of gentlemen friends, didn't she.
• 1:55:12
Speaker 8: Oh we it was Minnie. She was so popular that day.
• 1:55:18
Speaker 8: It seems it was the young man mister brewsteraire as
• 1:55:22
Speaker 8: you say, your how is it.
• 1:55:24
  Speaker 9: My nephew?
• 1:55:25
Speaker 8: OHI but I did not know him. Never would she
• 1:55:29
Speaker 8: tell me the names. It is sometimes the one, sometimes
• 1:55:32
Speaker 8: it is another. I ask no questions. I know my place.
• 1:55:37
Speaker 9: You had never seen my nephew, mister Brewster before that day.
• 1:55:42
Speaker 8: No, never had I seen him until I enter after
• 1:55:45
Speaker 8: the shot, find my mistress dead. Run here to this door,
• 1:55:50
Speaker 8: put aside these curtains. So and there there stand the
• 1:55:53
Speaker 8: young man, your mister brewsteriir, his eyes bulged, his faces
• 1:55:58
Speaker 8: off the crazy look. And there there on the floor
• 1:56:01
Speaker 8: right by him, I see the pistol with which he
• 1:56:06
Speaker 8: had just fired the shot that killed my mistress.
• 1:56:10
Speaker 1: Delphine is holding back the curtains, looking within the room.
• 1:56:14
Speaker 1: Off left. Sarah stands near her, looking at same spot.
• 1:56:20
Speaker 9: The pistol laid right there.
• 1:56:22
Speaker 8: We I pick it up.
• 1:56:25
Speaker 9: Oh, he picked it up and looked at it.
• 1:56:28
Speaker 8: Oh we then I think it is too horrible. I
• 1:56:33
Speaker 8: drop it in the same spot. We in the same
• 1:56:38
  Speaker 8: spot right there?
• 1:56:39
Speaker 9: You see? Yes, I see hm. And in the meantime,
• 1:56:45
Speaker 9: what else happened? Where was dick Ah?
• 1:56:48
  Speaker 8: But he escape?
• 1:56:50
Speaker 5: I am so excited.
• 1:56:52
Speaker 8: He go quick there, points right and disappear. I am
• 1:56:57
Speaker 8: at the telephone when again I look, he is gone.
• 1:57:02
Speaker 9: What about that other man that was here? What became
• 1:57:05
  Speaker 9: of him?
• 1:57:06
  Speaker 8: Then?
• 1:57:07
  Speaker 1: Why?
• 1:57:07
Speaker 8: He also? He is gone?
• 1:57:10
Speaker 9: Oh he skipped too. Where did he go?
• 1:57:13
Speaker 8: I do not see. When I have called the police,
• 1:57:17
Speaker 8: I am alone alone with her, my mistress dead.
• 1:57:22
Speaker 9: But it seems that man showed up. Afterwards they have
• 1:57:25
  Speaker 9: his testimony, but.
• 1:57:27
Speaker 8: Then it is too late. The murderer, he is gone.
• 1:57:32
Speaker 9: Yes, whoever, it was not the one you think, But
• 1:57:36
Speaker 9: we won't argue that question. Now I want to look
• 1:57:39
Speaker 9: around a little. I'll see what this room looks like.
• 1:57:43
Speaker 1: Exit Sarah left. Delphine holds back curtain, looking in at her.
• 1:57:48
  Speaker 1: Sarah calls from.
• 1:57:49
Speaker 9: Within, where does this door go to?
• 1:57:53
Speaker 8: The door? Oh? That door? It leads to the dining room.
• 1:57:57
Speaker 8: Then it is the kitchen. It as the There is.
• 1:58:01
Speaker 1: A slight pause. Delphine drops curtain, comes to center, looking
• 1:58:07
Speaker 1: towards left, showing some annoyance, scowls with a vindictive expression.
• 1:58:14
Speaker 1: Sarah enters, holding curtain aside, looking back off left.
• 1:58:19
Speaker 9: There's just that one door, you say. It leads into
• 1:58:22
Speaker 9: the dining room and on into the kitchen.
• 1:58:25
Speaker 8: So the kitchen we seldom use when I have the
• 1:58:29
Speaker 8: meals here. It is the kettleer that would come in.
• 1:58:32
Speaker 9: Oh, that was the way you never did the cooking?
• 1:58:36
Speaker 8: I cook, but no, never, I am not a cook,
• 1:58:41
  Speaker 8: mon dieu.
• 1:58:42
Speaker 9: No, I don't see what you're staying here all this
• 1:58:45
Speaker 9: time for anyway? No work for you to do. Not
• 1:58:49
Speaker 9: getting any pay, are you?
• 1:58:52
Speaker 8: But my mistress already she have paid me in advance,
• 1:58:56
Speaker 8: and the apartment also for some time it is paid.
• 1:59:00
Speaker 8: The police, they say, I shall stay for the presents
• 1:59:04
Speaker 8: till they have been here.
• 1:59:05
Speaker 9: Sometimes, yes, and brought that poor boy to torture him.
• 1:59:10
Speaker 9: But don't you get lonesome here? Feel kind of sort
• 1:59:13
  Speaker 9: of creepy.
• 1:59:14
Speaker 8: Like creepy like I do not know it is the
• 1:59:19
Speaker 8: strange word, but I need not to creep.
• 1:59:24
Speaker 9: Well, never mind, only I wondered. Now, let me see,
• 1:59:29
Speaker 9: couldn't somebody have come in through that door in there
• 1:59:33
  Speaker 9: and done it?
• 1:59:35
Speaker 8: But it is not pos siebel. The door always it
• 1:59:38
  Speaker 8: is locked.
• 1:59:40
Speaker 9: Locked, that door between that room and the dining room.
• 1:59:44
  Speaker 9: That's funny.
• 1:59:46
Speaker 8: Why no the other door beyond the one that opens
• 1:59:50
Speaker 8: to the hall, the other entrance you see, always that
• 1:59:54
Speaker 8: is locked. Nobody could come in besides mister Brewsterai he
• 1:59:59
Speaker 8: was there in this room. He see nobody. It is
• 2:00:03
Speaker 8: he that says, so he was alone. Quite When I
• 2:00:06
Speaker 8: come the door beyond, I find it still locked.
• 2:00:11
Speaker 1: Sarah puzzled, looking about, thinking deeply.
• 2:00:16
Speaker 9: Hm. And that other man who was here, the one
• 2:00:21
Speaker 9: who skipped out too, You don't know who he was.
• 2:00:25
Speaker 8: But no, as I have told Madam, I believe some
• 2:00:29
Speaker 8: friend of miss Navarre who also come that day for
• 2:00:31
Speaker 8: the first time here She know him as so jealous,
• 2:00:35
Speaker 8: is afraid. She tell mister Brewstair to hide there, and
• 2:00:39
Speaker 8: then when he suspects the quarrel, perhaps and in from
• 2:00:43
Speaker 8: there behind the curtain. Mister Brewstair wild jealous too of
• 2:00:48
Speaker 8: the other one, crazy with the anger.
• 2:00:50
Speaker 9: He Oh, that's how you figure it out? Is it? Well,
• 2:00:56
Speaker 9: there may have been somebody in there, crazy and wild
• 2:00:59
Speaker 9: with the aw there, but you needn't tell me you
• 2:01:02
Speaker 9: have named the right person.
• 2:01:04
Speaker 8: I know better, Madam? Is it that you would say,
• 2:01:08
Speaker 8: I do not tell all that. It is not true
• 2:01:11
Speaker 8: what I have said, But it is what you call corobiite.
• 2:01:16
Speaker 8: The police they believe, of course they do. They'll believe
• 2:01:21
Speaker 8: anything that suits their side. He won't catch them trying
• 2:01:25
Speaker 8: to make it look any other way. But what does
• 2:01:27
  Speaker 8: Madam think.
• 2:01:29
  Speaker 9: I don't think I know that it wasn't Dick Bruce
• 2:01:33
Speaker 9: that had shot that woman, no matter if everybody else
• 2:01:36
Speaker 9: in the world says he did. But to prove I'm right,
• 2:01:41
Speaker 9: that's another thing. You'd like to help me.
• 2:01:44
Speaker 8: Wouldn't you, I but I cannot. It is not that
• 2:01:49
Speaker 8: I would not, but but what I know it is,
• 2:01:53
Speaker 8: of course I sympathize.
• 2:01:55
Speaker 1: Beginning to tire of interview.
• 2:01:58
Speaker 8: Now, if Madame would care to go.
• 2:02:00
Speaker 9: Thanks, but I'm in no hurry. Guess I'll stay a
• 2:02:04
  Speaker 9: while longer.
• 2:02:05
  Speaker 1: Sets left center.
• 2:02:07
Speaker 9: But you needn't wait. I know the way out.
• 2:02:11
Speaker 1: Delphine goes DRM left.
• 2:02:14
Speaker 9: And if Madame should wish for me, she will call yes,
• 2:02:19
Speaker 9: but say, I wish you'd call me miss. I hate
• 2:02:23
  Speaker 9: that madame business.
• 2:02:26
  Speaker 8: Oh Certamon, Miss.
• 2:02:28
Speaker 9: Thanks, that's more like it just Miss Newcombe. It makes
• 2:02:33
Speaker 9: me feel like a dressmaker or a woman that tells
• 2:02:36
Speaker 9: fortunes or fixes finger nails to be called madam all
• 2:02:40
  Speaker 9: the time.
• 2:02:42
Speaker 1: She sits in deep thought, seeming not to notice Delphine,
• 2:02:46
Speaker 1: who is about to exit left. She looks towards door
• 2:02:50
Speaker 1: right and speaks just as Delphine parts curtains left and
• 2:02:55
Speaker 1: is about to exit.
• 2:02:57
Speaker 9: HM. By the way, that door.
• 2:03:01
Speaker 1: There pointing to right.
• 2:03:04
Speaker 9: There's another one and a little entry between, isn't there.
• 2:03:08
Speaker 1: Delphine coming part way back to left center?
• 2:03:12
Speaker 8: Try oh oi vestibule, Yes, if that's what.
• 2:03:18
  Speaker 9: You call it.
• 2:03:19
Speaker 1: She goes right open store, looking out that.
• 2:03:23
Speaker 9: Door, the one into the hall that's kept locked.
• 2:03:27
Speaker 8: I suppose we always it is locked. It is the
• 2:03:32
  Speaker 8: spring lock.
• 2:03:33
Speaker 9: Then it was locked that day of the that it happened.
• 2:03:40
Speaker 9: But you burst right in after you heard that shot.
• 2:03:43
Speaker 9: Had a key, I suppose why?
• 2:03:46
Speaker 8: Of course, miss NEvAr I both we have the key,
• 2:03:51
Speaker 8: the same one. No, no, each we have one.
• 2:03:56
Speaker 9: Then when you got off the elevator, just as you
• 2:03:59
Speaker 9: heard the shot, you unlocked the door and rushed right in.
• 2:04:04
Speaker 1: Delphine makes a sent.
• 2:04:06
Speaker 9: I see, And when you came in, you saw miss
• 2:04:10
Speaker 9: Navarre there on the floor.
• 2:04:13
Speaker 8: Yes, yes, as I have said, my poor mistress.
• 2:04:17
Speaker 9: Yes, yes, you mean we oi, don't you? Well? Anyway,
• 2:04:23
Speaker 9: you rushed right across this room and pulled aside those curtains.
• 2:04:28
Speaker 9: How did you know there was anybody behind them?
• 2:04:31
Speaker 8: But I have held the shot. I look, I see
• 2:04:35
Speaker 8: a hand, a face there in the curtains. I look,
• 2:04:40
Speaker 8: it is he hmm.
• 2:04:43
Speaker 9: It didn't take you long to unlock the door and
• 2:04:45
Speaker 9: get in after you got off the elevator. Did it
• 2:04:48
Speaker 9: had the key already? I suppose?
• 2:04:51
Speaker 8: Why? Of course, it is so easy it to take.
• 2:04:54
Speaker 9: But a second now, of course, that's just one of
• 2:04:58
Speaker 9: my foolish questions. But I'd like to see the key.
• 2:05:03
Speaker 8: The key. It is nothing, just the key, I.
• 2:05:07
Speaker 9: Know, but I'm sort of curious, just like to look
• 2:05:12
Speaker 9: at it. If it ain't too much trouble.
• 2:05:14
Speaker 8: It is strange, but of course it is in my bag.
• 2:05:18
Speaker 8: I will get it.
• 2:05:20
Speaker 1: Exit Delphine left, Sarah has closed door, right, comes to center,
• 2:05:26
Speaker 1: stands squinting her eyes with a keen, suspicious look. After
• 2:05:31
Speaker 1: Delphine seems to be putting two and two together. After
• 2:05:37
Speaker 1: a slight pause, enter Delphine left. Thatt it Delphine indicating
• 2:05:43
Speaker 1: yale key one of two tied together. This Sarah taking keys,
• 2:05:50
  Speaker 1: examining one indicated.
• 2:05:53
Speaker 9: Yes, and what is this other one?
• 2:05:56
Speaker 8: The other one? Why it is that we have two?
• 2:06:01
Speaker 9: Sure? Of course, so if you should lose.
• 2:06:04
Speaker 8: One, as one might so easily, you see, sure.
• 2:06:09
Speaker 9: Easy as anything. I've lost things myself, lots of times,
• 2:06:13
Speaker 9: keys too, But it seems kind of funny to have
• 2:06:17
Speaker 9: them tied together like this. If you lose one, you
• 2:06:20
Speaker 9: lose both, then how do you get in?
• 2:06:25
Speaker 1: She has placed one key on top of the other,
• 2:06:28
Speaker 1: comparing and examining them closely, feeling of Nixon them.
• 2:06:34
Speaker 8: It is not that I keep them, so I have
• 2:06:37
  Speaker 8: just tie them.
• 2:06:38
Speaker 9: Since, oh, I see, of course, now you've got the
• 2:06:43
Speaker 9: other one, the one that she had.
• 2:06:47
  Speaker 1: Delphine somewhat relieved.
• 2:06:49
Speaker 9: O hui, why of course if you lose these, you
• 2:06:54
Speaker 9: have that one? Now? All very plain? You say these
• 2:06:57
Speaker 9: are both to that door?
• 2:06:59
  Speaker 1: Indicate door? Right?
• 2:07:01
  Speaker 8: We both.
• 2:07:03
Speaker 1: She holds out her hand to take keys. Sarah is
• 2:07:07
Speaker 1: about to give them to her when the doorbell rings, right,
• 2:07:10
Speaker 1: and she keeps them there.
• 2:07:12
Speaker 9: That's Lenn Fillmore. He said he'd come up after me.
• 2:07:16
Speaker 1: Starts to door. I. Delphine is about to open door, right,
• 2:07:21
Speaker 1: but Sarah intercepts her.
• 2:07:23
Speaker 9: Never mind, I'll let him in.
• 2:07:26
Speaker 8: But Madame pot On, it is my place, land.
• 2:07:30
Speaker 9: I guess I've been to doors.
• 2:07:32
Speaker 1: She is too quick for Delphine, open store and quickly
• 2:07:36
Speaker 1: goes out, pulling door shut behind her. Delphine seems annoyed
• 2:07:42
Speaker 1: after pause, open store, cautiously peering out Sarah outside.
• 2:07:49
Speaker 9: All right, Lynn, go right in.
• 2:07:51
Speaker 1: Delphine closes door quickly goes to Santa, just as Leonard enters.
• 2:07:57
Speaker 4: Right, Oh you're here, are you dead?
• 2:08:00
  Speaker 2: Well?
• 2:08:00
Speaker 8: Pen del fine? Monsieur?
• 2:08:03
Speaker 4: Oh, yes, fene new one on me. French, isn't it?
• 2:08:07
  Speaker 6: Oh?
• 2:08:08
Speaker 4: We nice name all right? Suits you Mercy Mercy. Oh yes,
• 2:08:14
Speaker 4: that means much obliged. You're welcome. Nice name, nice girl.
• 2:08:20
  Speaker 4: You were Miss Navar's maid. I understand O I am
• 2:08:24
Speaker 4: her maaide am. Oh, I see that's your way of saying,
• 2:08:29
Speaker 4: was a sort of hired girl you were.
• 2:08:32
Speaker 8: I suppose I knew not that RLD girl. If it
• 2:08:37
Speaker 8: is the seventh that you mean.
• 2:08:39
Speaker 4: No, well, you're a girl and you got paid. I
• 2:08:44
Speaker 4: guess it's about the same thing. But I suppose you
• 2:08:47
Speaker 4: didn't do much housework.
• 2:08:49
Speaker 8: Monsieur would joke with me? I beg to be excuse.
• 2:08:54
Speaker 1: Oh bye, tw exit left.
• 2:08:56
Speaker 4: Sure you needn't get mad about it. You and miss
• 2:08:59
Speaker 4: Nwcom have been having quite a chat here, haven't you.
• 2:09:02
Speaker 8: Oh indeed, the mauch it is that she is so inquisitive.
• 2:09:08
Speaker 4: You mustn't mind her. She means all right, looking right,
• 2:09:12
Speaker 4: I wonder if she's got lost. Guess i'd better.
• 2:09:15
Speaker 1: Look Delphine at door right, I will see she is
• 2:09:20
Speaker 1: about to open door when Sarah.
• 2:09:22
Speaker 4: Enters ready, Lynn, well, I should say you.
• 2:09:27
Speaker 9: Yes already now yes, you think it's about time?
• 2:09:32
Speaker 1: Looking about in search of something in back then on floor, Ah, I.
• 2:09:38
Speaker 9: Declare I've lost my handkerchief.
• 2:09:39
Speaker 1: Must have dropped it to Delphine.
• 2:09:43
Speaker 9: Maybe it's in that room there? Would you mind looking?
• 2:09:46
  Speaker 8: No store?
• 2:09:48
Speaker 1: Exit? Delphine left. The curtains are closed. Sarah glancing left,
• 2:09:55
Speaker 1: then going and looking through curtains, closing them, coming back,
• 2:10:00
Speaker 1: speaking cautiously to Leonard, Lynn, yes, sh glancing laughed.
• 2:10:07
Speaker 4: You know that stone wall, the blind one.
• 2:10:10
Speaker 9: Yes, well there is a chink in it, a hole ah,
• 2:10:17
  Speaker 9: and it's a key hole.
• 2:10:20
Speaker 1: Going right about to exit, He follows her curiously.
• 2:10:26
Speaker 9: Yes, Lenn, a key hole, and I think I've got
• 2:10:30
Speaker 9: the key that fits it.
• 2:10:33
Speaker 1: Exit Sarah at door right. Leonard at door, holding it
• 2:10:38
Speaker 1: part way open, looks out after her with wrinkled brows,
• 2:10:42
Speaker 1: then smiles indulgently. Exit Leonard right that same instant, enter
• 2:10:49
  Speaker 1: Delphine left.
• 2:10:51
Speaker 8: I did not find.
• 2:10:53
Speaker 1: She looks surprised, puzzled, hastens to door right, just as
• 2:10:58
Speaker 1: Leonard closes it behind him. She opens it.
• 2:11:02
  Speaker 8: Madame the key.
• 2:11:06
Speaker 1: The outer door is heard to slam. Delphine stands with
• 2:11:11
Speaker 1: knob of inner door in her hand, looking out a
• 2:11:15
Speaker 1: perplexed expression, then one of apprehension. Fright dawns upon her face.
• 2:11:24
Speaker 1: Curtain end of Act three, Act four scene the same
• 2:11:31
Speaker 1: as Act two. About three weeks later, discover Aaron Flint
• 2:11:37
Speaker 1: standing up by left upper entrance, with cheap suit case
• 2:11:40
Speaker 1: in one hand, a rolled up umbrella in the other,
• 2:11:44
Speaker 1: his hat on pushed back. Lilianne is part way down center.
• 2:11:50
Speaker 1: She wears hat coat, et cetera, has handbag and a
• 2:11:54
Speaker 1: good sized package of brown paper well tied with string.
• 2:11:59
Speaker 1: They are both looking at Hanson, who is posed in
• 2:12:03
Speaker 1: left upper entrance in his most pompous attitude.
• 2:12:07
Speaker 3: Well, I guess you can tell miss Newcombe we're here,
• 2:12:10
Speaker 3: can't you? I should think you might do that much
• 2:12:14
Speaker 3: to oblige. She's staying here, ain't she?
• 2:12:18
Speaker 1: Hanson gives a stiff bow in a sent.
• 2:12:21
Speaker 3: Well, then can't you go and tell her?
• 2:12:24
Speaker 2: Aaron? You keep still and take your head off. Where's
• 2:12:27
  Speaker 2: your manners?
• 2:12:28
Speaker 1: Aaron removes his hut, sheepishly murmuring, oh.
• 2:12:33
Speaker 2: I suppose seeing you let us in that maybe you
• 2:12:36
Speaker 2: worked here. But if I'd made a mistake, I beg
• 2:12:38
  Speaker 2: your pardon.
• 2:12:40
Speaker 3: I am the butler any relation to Sam Butler up
• 2:12:44
  Speaker 3: in Warren.
• 2:12:44
Speaker 2: County Lynn Aaron Flint, ain't you got a bit of sense?
• 2:12:49
  Speaker 2: He means he's a waiter.
• 2:12:51
Speaker 3: Oh that's it. Then maybe he's waiting for a tip.
• 2:12:56
Speaker 1: Feeling in pockets. Henson shows offended dignity.
• 2:13:00
Speaker 3: That's the way they all be down this way. Won't
• 2:13:04
Speaker 3: budge an inch, unleash you tip.
• 2:13:05
Speaker 10: Them if you will present me with your cards.
• 2:13:10
Speaker 1: He has cardtree, which he now holds out. Aaron places
• 2:13:15
Speaker 1: a coin on it. Hensome pays no attention to this, though,
• 2:13:19
Speaker 1: assuming an even more pompous manner.
• 2:13:23
Speaker 2: Man, we ain't got no cards. We ain't that stylish.
• 2:13:27
Speaker 2: I guess it'll be all right if you just go
• 2:13:29
Speaker 2: and tell her some friends of hers are here.
• 2:13:31
  Speaker 10: What name, please?
• 2:13:34
  Speaker 2: Newcombe? Sarah Newcombe?
• 2:13:36
Speaker 10: Pardon me the names I am to announce?
• 2:13:40
Speaker 2: Oh you mean her names? Ner Man? Just tell her
• 2:13:43
Speaker 2: what I said, some friends of hers. We want a surprise.
• 2:13:46
Speaker 1: Hence turns and, in a most dignified manner, goes upstairs.
• 2:13:53
Speaker 1: Aaron going to foot of stairs, looking up after him.
• 2:13:57
Speaker 3: Well, now I'll be gum swizzled. If he ain't the
• 2:14:00
Speaker 3: durndest thought. Maybe twas the King of Egypt or somebody
• 2:14:05
Speaker 3: here making them a visit.
• 2:14:07
Speaker 2: Yes, of course you had to go and show your greenness. Land.
• 2:14:11
Speaker 2: I should think you'd know what a butler is, after
• 2:14:13
Speaker 2: all them story books you've read. It's only another name
• 2:14:16
Speaker 2: for hired man, same as.
• 2:14:18
Speaker 3: You me like that, Gosh, strangle me. Seems to me
• 2:14:24
Speaker 3: you didn't know much more about it, and I did, though,
• 2:14:27
Speaker 3: when it come to that. Guess if I'm green, you're
• 2:14:31
Speaker 3: a pretty good match for me.
• 2:14:34
Speaker 1: They have come partway down, Aaron has placed grip et
• 2:14:38
Speaker 1: cetera at one side. Both go about examining furniture, pictures, etc.
• 2:14:44
Speaker 3: Guy Itt fixed up pretty swell here, ain't they? Guess
• 2:14:48
Speaker 3: this is what you'd call style.
• 2:14:51
Speaker 2: Yes, the kind of style. Miss Brewster and her daughter
• 2:14:54
Speaker 2: keep up and then come and live on Miss nukeomb
• 2:14:56
Speaker 2: all summer. I guess if the truth was known, she's
• 2:14:59
Speaker 2: butting up for some of this too, though she never
• 2:15:01
Speaker 2: lets on. I know her tis pretty grand though, ain't
• 2:15:06
Speaker 2: nothing in Brookville like it, even at the hotel.
• 2:15:09
Speaker 3: Dang knows we'll know how to act.
• 2:15:12
Speaker 2: Huh. They can't scare me with their high looting things
• 2:15:15
Speaker 2: and stuck up ways. I'm as good as they are
• 2:15:18
Speaker 2: when it comes to that, And you needn't go to
• 2:15:20
Speaker 2: apologize nearon flint, hold your head up and act as
• 2:15:24
Speaker 2: if you as good as anybody.
• 2:15:26
Speaker 3: Gosh, I never could act as if I was such
• 2:15:29
Speaker 3: a big bug as that butler fellow.
• 2:15:32
Speaker 2: The idea hen here she comes.
• 2:15:37
Speaker 1: Sarah appears at the top of stairs. They see her
• 2:15:41
Speaker 1: and draw back to one side so that she does
• 2:15:43
Speaker 1: not see them as she comes down, enters and to center.
• 2:15:48
Speaker 1: They then approach her, one on each side. Henson comes downstairs,
• 2:15:55
Speaker 1: exits right. Sarah turns, sees them in a bewilderment, almost
• 2:16:01
  Speaker 1: unable to speak.
• 2:16:04
Speaker 9: Why if it isn't it can't be, But.
• 2:16:07
Speaker 2: It is, Miss nukeamb H's us. We found you at
• 2:16:11
Speaker 2: last thought we never would talk about your needle in
• 2:16:14
  Speaker 2: a woodpile.
• 2:16:16
Speaker 3: Guess we wouldn't yet if it hadn't been from my
• 2:16:18
  Speaker 3: detecative instinct.
• 2:16:21
  Speaker 9: But I don't understand. I can't believe it. You, Lily
• 2:16:25
Speaker 9: Ann and Aaron way down here in New York and together.
• 2:16:31
Speaker 9: What does it mean?
• 2:16:32
Speaker 3: Oh, we just thought we'd take a little trip.
• 2:16:36
Speaker 2: Thought maybe you'd be glad to see us?
• 2:16:38
Speaker 9: Why I am, of course, But it don't seem respectable.
• 2:16:44
Speaker 9: What will folks say? Do they know about it? There
• 2:16:48
  Speaker 9: in Brookville?
• 2:16:49
  Speaker 1: Sure?
• 2:16:50
Speaker 3: Regular crowd there to see us off?
• 2:16:54
Speaker 9: Lily An? What does it mean? Are you crazy?
• 2:16:58
  Speaker 2: I don't know, but I am, Miss nukemb I guess
• 2:17:00
Speaker 2: you'll think so when I tell yer the truth is
• 2:17:04
Speaker 2: we're married, married, you and Aaron Flint good Lane. You
• 2:17:11
Speaker 2: don't suppose i'd be taking a trip with em to
• 2:17:13
Speaker 2: New York if I wouldn't you know me better'n that
• 2:17:16
Speaker 2: Miss Newcombe? We been married three days, ain't it? Aaron?
• 2:17:20
Speaker 2: Seems more like three weeks? A month's to me?
• 2:17:24
Speaker 3: Oh it does? Does it?
• 2:17:26
  Speaker 4: Much?
• 2:17:26
  Speaker 3: Obliged?
• 2:17:28
Speaker 9: But how did it ever happen? After the way you
• 2:17:31
Speaker 9: always vowed? Lilianne? But I declare I'm so upset I
• 2:17:35
Speaker 9: forgot to be polite, set down, Lily Anne, and you
• 2:17:39
Speaker 9: too erin Land's sakes, lily Anne, I suppose I ought
• 2:17:43
Speaker 9: to call you missus Flint.
• 2:17:46
Speaker 2: Mercy me, don't you do it? I wouldn't know the answer,
• 2:17:50
Speaker 2: lilian I was Lilian I am and Liliana always will be.
• 2:17:55
Speaker 9: I guess you will be to me anyway, but tell.
• 2:18:00
Speaker 2: Me, oh well, Aaron. He kept pestering me till I
• 2:18:03
Speaker 2: couldn't stand it any longer. So all of a sudden
• 2:18:06
Speaker 2: I open said yes, had to do it to get
• 2:18:08
Speaker 2: rid of him. Made up my mind it'd be easier
• 2:18:11
Speaker 2: to handle a husband than a feller. It wanted to be. Besides,
• 2:18:14
Speaker 2: the inducements was too much for me. I couldn't hold
• 2:18:17
Speaker 2: out any longer when he said we'd come to New
• 2:18:19
Speaker 2: York and see you and all the.
• 2:18:20
Speaker 3: Sights I've been saving up for a considerable spell with
• 2:18:25
Speaker 3: this ere trip in view. And when I set my
• 2:18:28
Speaker 3: mind to a thing, well I most generally get it.
• 2:18:32
  Speaker 9: I must say I admired your perseverance erin m I'm
• 2:18:36
Speaker 9: glad you took him, Lilian only. I hope it don't
• 2:18:39
Speaker 9: mean you're going to desert me.
• 2:18:41
Speaker 2: No, indeed, Miss nukembe not much a calai. We'll stick closer,
• 2:18:46
Speaker 2: never just run away for a little wedding tower, so
• 2:18:49
Speaker 2: to speak. Saal Bennett and Fidelia looking after things at
• 2:18:52
Speaker 2: the farm. We attended that all right, we're just taking awake.
• 2:18:56
Speaker 3: Yes, and CrowdIn a heap into it. You bet been
• 2:19:00
Speaker 3: stopping at the Astor.
• 2:19:02
Speaker 2: House sounds real flowery. Don't it tis too an expensive?
• 2:19:07
Speaker 3: Appropriate too for a newly married brided couple, he asked her,
• 2:19:12
Speaker 3: and she said she would.
• 2:19:15
Speaker 2: Aaron Flint, don't try to be smart land Sakes, Miss Nukem.
• 2:19:19
Speaker 2: I have my hands full with him, honest, I didn't
• 2:19:21
Speaker 2: know anybody could be so green?
• 2:19:24
  Speaker 9: Why, Lily Anne?
• 2:19:26
Speaker 2: Well, he is the man at the hotel told us
• 2:19:29
Speaker 2: a good show to go to. It'd be the Hippodrome.
• 2:19:32
Speaker 2: And Aaron, he says, is that where they have trained hippopotamuses,
• 2:19:37
Speaker 2: as if they could.
• 2:19:39
Speaker 3: I guess you needn't talk. When a policeman told us
• 2:19:43
Speaker 3: that tall slim building was a flat iron building, Lily Anne,
• 2:19:48
Speaker 3: she says right out, Oh, let's go in and see
• 2:19:52
Speaker 3: him make some flat irons.
• 2:19:55
Speaker 2: I was just joking. I guess that wouldn't no worse
• 2:19:58
Speaker 2: than you trying to blow out the electric.
• 2:20:01
Speaker 3: Say then, do don't you believe we're Miss Newcombe? I
• 2:20:06
Speaker 3: guess I ain't such an old hay seed as all that.
• 2:20:10
Speaker 3: It t weren't me at any rate. When we was
• 2:20:12
Speaker 3: up in Central Park and they pointed out that big
• 2:20:16
Speaker 3: statue they called Cleopatra's Needle, it said needle. What do
• 2:20:21
Speaker 3: they call it a needle, for they ain't no eye
• 2:20:24
  Speaker 3: hole in it.
• 2:20:26
Speaker 1: They begin to show signs of a real tiff. Sarah
• 2:20:30
Speaker 1: tries to pacify them when it.
• 2:20:32
Speaker 9: Comes to that, I guess we ain't no green and
• 2:20:35
Speaker 9: the city folks are in the country. Remember that girl
• 2:20:38
Speaker 9: from New York that borded with Miss Orchard last summer
• 2:20:42
Speaker 9: wanted to know which cow it was gave buttermilk gosh?
• 2:20:47
  Speaker 1: I remember her.
• 2:20:49
Speaker 3: She just thought it was cute to pretend she didn't
• 2:20:52
  Speaker 3: know nothing.
• 2:20:53
Speaker 2: Well, there's plenty of them, don't have to pretend. But
• 2:20:56
Speaker 2: my goodness, Miss Newcombe, we ain't asked you how you are?
• 2:21:00
Speaker 2: And how about that boy your nephew, and all? How's
• 2:21:03
  Speaker 2: it coming here?
• 2:21:04
Speaker 9: We're hoping for the best, Lily Anne. I'll tell you
• 2:21:07
Speaker 9: all about it later on. You must be tired now
• 2:21:10
Speaker 9: and want to get brushed up a little. I'll see
• 2:21:13
Speaker 9: about a room now.
• 2:21:14
Speaker 2: You needn't bother Miss Newgam. It might put you out
• 2:21:17
Speaker 2: some sads, what Miss Brewster think.
• 2:21:20
Speaker 9: Oh I can fix it all right, you leave it
• 2:21:22
  Speaker 9: to me.
• 2:21:24
Speaker 1: She starts up center as if to show them upstairs.
• 2:21:28
Speaker 1: Lily Anne pauses center. Aaron is left center where we.
• 2:21:33
Speaker 2: Might stay one night looks real stylish here, don't it.
• 2:21:37
Speaker 2: But I suppose you're getting used to it.
• 2:21:39
  Speaker 9: No, I can't say, I am. I can't hardly wait
• 2:21:42
Speaker 9: to get back to the farm. But come on and
• 2:21:46
Speaker 9: we'll see where you can sleep. I guess in the
• 2:21:48
Speaker 9: room right next to mine.
• 2:21:50
Speaker 2: Oh that'll be fun. Aaron, where's that bundle?
• 2:21:54
Speaker 1: Aaron taking package from chair where she had placed it.
• 2:21:58
Speaker 3: Here it is eerie.
• 2:22:01
Speaker 1: Lilian, sniffing at his display of sentiment, takes package.
• 2:22:07
Speaker 2: Here's a few things I brought you, miss Newcombe. Just
• 2:22:09
Speaker 2: two or three of my fried cakes, a little bottle
• 2:22:11
Speaker 2: of that preserved watermelon Rne you're so fond of, and
• 2:22:15
Speaker 2: two or three other little things.
• 2:22:17
  Speaker 1: Sarah taking package.
• 2:22:20
Speaker 9: Oh, Lily Anne, how good of you, my? But they'll
• 2:22:24
Speaker 9: taste good. I'm so tired of their fancy cooking here,
• 2:22:29
Speaker 9: huh in some of your fried cakes.
• 2:22:31
Speaker 2: Course they may be a little dry.
• 2:22:34
Speaker 3: And I got a dozen or so red apples for
• 2:22:36
Speaker 3: Linn fillmore in my grip. Thought he might want to
• 2:22:39
Speaker 3: treat miss Brewster. Is he still shining up to.
• 2:22:43
Speaker 2: Her, Aaron flint, as if she'd have them? Not? But
• 2:22:48
Speaker 2: what he's too good for her? And how is Lynn?
• 2:22:51
  Speaker 2: Miss Newcombe.
• 2:22:52
Speaker 9: Oh he's well bout, played out though with the struggle
• 2:22:55
Speaker 9: to save my boy. But we'll do it, we will.
• 2:23:00
Speaker 9: I'd better show you your room now.
• 2:23:02
Speaker 1: She is about to lead the way upstairs. When Helen
• 2:23:06
Speaker 1: enters right she sees them, shows surprise.
• 2:23:10
Speaker 9: Why if it isn't mister and missus Aaron Flint, what.
• 2:23:16
  Speaker 6: Married you too?
• 2:23:18
Speaker 3: Sure ain't two enough?
• 2:23:22
Speaker 2: Don't mind him, Miss Brewster, he ain't responsible. Yes, we're married,
• 2:23:27
Speaker 2: not on our trip. Just call to see miss Newcomb
• 2:23:29
Speaker 2: and she's kind enough to want us to stay on
• 2:23:31
Speaker 2: that if it won't put you out.
• 2:23:34
Speaker 1: Helen, with a display of cordiality, shaking hands with them.
• 2:23:38
Speaker 6: Why, no, of course it won't. We have plenty of room.
• 2:23:42
Speaker 6: Please accept my congratulations.
• 2:23:45
Speaker 3: Thank you, am wishing you the same.
• 2:23:49
Speaker 9: I was just going to take him up stairs, Helen.
• 2:23:51
Speaker 9: I thought i'd put them in the room next to mine.
• 2:23:54
Speaker 9: I guess he'll be all right, won't it?
• 2:23:56
Speaker 6: Of course it will. But I'll call Hanson presses button.
• 2:24:01
Speaker 3: Ah, I guess he ain't much stuck on waitin on
• 2:24:05
Speaker 3: us if we'd be a newly married brided couple on
• 2:24:08
  Speaker 3: our weddin tower.
• 2:24:10
Speaker 1: Helen smiles good naturedly, Liliane frowns at Aaron with an
• 2:24:15
Speaker 1: admonishing shake of the head.
• 2:24:18
Speaker 3: Oh well that's what we be, and I ain't ashamed
• 2:24:21
Speaker 3: of it. By the way, we brung something for you,
• 2:24:25
Speaker 3: miss Brewster, something for me. Yep, right from the farm.
• 2:24:31
Speaker 3: Some of them red apples, least wires our brun beIN
• 2:24:35
Speaker 3: fillmore s and I reckon he'll be willin to divide
• 2:24:38
  Speaker 3: him with you.
• 2:24:40
Speaker 1: Helen looks somewhat confused.
• 2:24:43
Speaker 6: Enter Henson, right, Henson show mister and missus Flint to
• 2:24:47
Speaker 6: the room next to Miss Newcombe's.
• 2:24:50
Speaker 1: Aaron has taken up grip, but now yields at Henson,
• 2:24:54
Speaker 1: who handles it with extreme caution, as if fearing contamination.
• 2:25:00
Speaker 3: You needn't be afraid of it, mister Butler, it won't bite.
• 2:25:04
Speaker 1: Henson, in his stiffest manner, goes up the stairs carrying
• 2:25:08
Speaker 1: the suitcase. Aaron takes the umbrella package, et cetera. He
• 2:25:14
Speaker 1: and lilian are following Henson upstairs, she preceding him. Part
• 2:25:20
Speaker 1: way up. Aaron turns and speaks.
• 2:25:24
Speaker 3: Hope you'll like the apples, Miss Brewster thought maybe they'd
• 2:25:27
Speaker 3: seem like old times, them red ones.
• 2:25:30
Speaker 6: You know, thank you, you are very kind.
• 2:25:34
Speaker 2: Aaron Flint, you come up here. They ain't the same
• 2:25:37
Speaker 2: apples at all, Miss Brewster. They're all gone long ago,
• 2:25:40
Speaker 2: them summer ones. But these are red and twice as
• 2:25:43
  Speaker 2: sweet Erin.
• 2:25:46
Speaker 1: At top of stairs, as he is about to follow Lillian,
• 2:25:49
Speaker 1: who has made her exit and.
• 2:25:51
Speaker 3: Not half the apt to give you the stomach ache.
• 2:25:55
Speaker 1: Exit Aaron, Helen, paying no attention to his remark, crosses
• 2:25:59
Speaker 1: to Centa. Sarah comes down to Santa.
• 2:26:04
Speaker 9: You mustn't mind them, Helen. They mean all right. I
• 2:26:07
Speaker 9: hope you don't mind their coming. I was just as
• 2:26:10
Speaker 9: much surprised as you were. They never let me know
• 2:26:12
Speaker 9: a thing about it.
• 2:26:14
Speaker 6: Why should I care? I am glad if you are
• 2:26:16
Speaker 6: pleased to see them.
• 2:26:18
  Speaker 9: Well, I don't know what Emma's say.
• 2:26:21
  Speaker 1: Henson comes downstairs.
• 2:26:23
Speaker 6: Exit right, She has no right to object. Isn't this
• 2:26:27
Speaker 6: practically your house now?
• 2:26:29
Speaker 9: Surely, Helen, you know I don't want you to feel
• 2:26:33
Speaker 9: that way. Don't you think with all we've got to bear,
• 2:26:36
Speaker 9: we might be a little closer together? You and me, Helen.
• 2:26:41
Speaker 9: I'm your aunt. I want to see you happy, if only.
• 2:26:45
Speaker 6: I'm afraid there's not much happiness in store for me,
• 2:26:48
Speaker 6: Aunt Sarah, even if you succeed in saving Dick as
• 2:26:52
Speaker 6: you seem to think you can, you can't save me.
• 2:26:56
Speaker 9: Why, Helen, girl, what do you mean You've giving up
• 2:27:00
Speaker 9: that man? And now isn't there another one? Someone?
• 2:27:04
  Speaker 2: You?
• 2:27:05
  Speaker 9: Really?
• 2:27:06
Speaker 6: There is no one else. I have sent for him
• 2:27:09
Speaker 6: to ask his forgiveness for what I said to him.
• 2:27:13
Speaker 6: He is coming this afternoon. I am to be his.
• 2:27:17
Speaker 9: But Helen, you can't marry that man, even if he
• 2:27:21
Speaker 9: still wants you. You mustn't.
• 2:27:24
Speaker 6: I can, I must. It is the only way I
• 2:27:28
Speaker 6: have made up my mind.
• 2:27:30
Speaker 9: Well, I guess you're woman enough to change it, to
• 2:27:33
Speaker 9: make it up all over again. If you knew what
• 2:27:36
Speaker 9: that man is, what he has done, it would make
• 2:27:40
  Speaker 9: no difference.
• 2:27:41
Speaker 1: She kindly but firmly puts Sarah aside and goes up.
• 2:27:45
Speaker 1: Right there, she meets Missus Brewster, who enters right upper entrance.
• 2:27:52
Speaker 1: Sarah goes towards Missus Brucenter speaks with vehemence. Helen pauses, M.
• 2:27:59
Speaker 9: Bruce, what kind of woman are you? What kind of mother?
• 2:28:04
Speaker 9: A woman that thinks of nothing but herself, of having
• 2:28:07
Speaker 9: a fine house to live in, grand clothes to put
• 2:28:10
Speaker 9: on her back, and jewelry to hang around her neck.
• 2:28:13
Speaker 9: And dangle in her ears A mother who would sell
• 2:28:16
Speaker 9: her own daughter to get those things, sell her to
• 2:28:19
Speaker 9: a man who isn't fit to wipe a decent girl's shoes.
• 2:28:23
Speaker 9: Is that what you are, my sister? Then I'm ashamed
• 2:28:27
Speaker 9: of you. Sorry, we had the same mother. Look what's
• 2:28:31
Speaker 9: come to you? A son, and now you want to
• 2:28:33
Speaker 9: bring your daughter to something worse. He's innocent, while you
• 2:28:37
Speaker 9: you want to make this girl the property of a
• 2:28:40
Speaker 9: man who has who But you shan't do it. You shan't.
• 2:28:46
Speaker 1: Missus Brewster, who has stood apparently too dumbfounded to speak,
• 2:28:52
Speaker 1: or as if trying in vain to do so.
• 2:28:55
Speaker 5: How dare you talk to me like this?
• 2:28:58
  Speaker 6: How dare you?
• 2:29:00
Speaker 9: Dear? Do you think I'm afraid of you of anything
• 2:29:05
Speaker 9: when it comes to this, No, what I'm afraid of
• 2:29:09
Speaker 9: is to trust you with your own child, and I'm
• 2:29:12
Speaker 9: going to save her from you, from her own mother.
• 2:29:17
Speaker 1: She has gone up right and now exits missus Brewster,
• 2:29:22
Speaker 1: and Helen seemed too surprised to speak. Missus Brewster quivering
• 2:29:27
Speaker 1: with anger, standing center. Helen, who has gone to left center,
• 2:29:32
Speaker 1: overcome with grief and shame, sinks into chair, covering her
• 2:29:36
  Speaker 1: face with hands.
• 2:29:38
Speaker 5: I will not put up with it. I shall turn
• 2:29:41
Speaker 5: her out of the house. Even if she is my sister.
• 2:29:45
Speaker 6: Perhaps it is she who can turn us out. Don't
• 2:29:48
  Speaker 6: forget that.
• 2:29:50
Speaker 5: She with her pottery money. We'll see how far she
• 2:29:53
Speaker 5: can go. She shall leave this house.
• 2:29:56
Speaker 6: But wait soon she may have no further claim upon her.
• 2:30:00
Speaker 5: Yes, Helen, what do you mean that you have reconsidered?
• 2:30:06
Speaker 1: That is not too late, Helen. She has risen stuns center.
• 2:30:13
Speaker 6: It means that I have sent for him, that he
• 2:30:15
  Speaker 6: is coming.
• 2:30:16
Speaker 1: Back missus Brewster, as if to caress her, but desisting
• 2:30:21
Speaker 1: as Helen drawls away coldly.
• 2:30:25
Speaker 5: My daughter, my own darling child.
• 2:30:29
Speaker 6: No, please, let there be no false sentiment between us.
• 2:30:34
Speaker 6: I am going to sacrifice myself. He is coming to
• 2:30:37
Speaker 6: gloat over me, over the woman who, after all humbles
• 2:30:41
Speaker 6: herself at his feet. Let us understand each other. Mother,
• 2:30:45
Speaker 6: tell the truth this once. Then I will seal it
• 2:30:49
Speaker 6: up in my heart forever and bear it all in silence.
• 2:30:53
Speaker 5: Helene. No, if you feel that way about it, I
• 2:30:59
  Speaker 5: won't let you.
• 2:31:00
Speaker 6: Oh, you needn't upbraid yourself. I know what I am doing.
• 2:31:04
Speaker 6: It may mean that we can free Dick too, hide
• 2:31:07
Speaker 6: our disgrace money can do anything like that. I needn't count.
• 2:31:13
Speaker 6: It doesn't matter that I shall be living a lie.
• 2:31:16
Speaker 6: I shall not be the first woman that has sold
• 2:31:19
Speaker 6: herself for money to a man. She loathes when she
• 2:31:24
  Speaker 6: loves another.
• 2:31:26
Speaker 5: Helen, you don't mean you can't, not that you.
• 2:31:31
Speaker 1: Love Helen turns to her in a sudden, brief surrender
• 2:31:36
Speaker 1: to her real feelings.
• 2:31:39
Speaker 6: Yes, let me own it this once, though not to him.
• 2:31:43
Speaker 6: He shall never know. But I love him. I love him,
• 2:31:48
Speaker 6: I have from the very first, though I didn't realize it.
• 2:31:51
Speaker 6: Then he is a man, a true noble man, worthy
• 2:31:56
Speaker 6: of my love, of any woman's love. But I I
• 2:32:00
Speaker 6: am not worthy of his.
• 2:32:03
Speaker 1: She breaks down. Missus Brewster looks at her with some
• 2:32:07
Speaker 1: show of compassion, but still evidently rejoicing that she has
• 2:32:12
  Speaker 1: gained her point.
• 2:32:14
Speaker 5: But that uncouth countryman.
• 2:32:18
Speaker 1: Helen, throwing off her real feelings with a forced air
• 2:32:22
Speaker 1: of hardness and indifference, though still with a trace of
• 2:32:26
  Speaker 1: deeper emotion.
• 2:32:28
Speaker 6: We will not speak of it any more ever again. Remember,
• 2:32:33
Speaker 6: but you needn't fear. I shall keep my word.
• 2:32:37
Speaker 1: She is about to go upright, but suddenly pauses.
• 2:32:41
Speaker 6: Oh, by the way, I forgot. We have some guests. Guests, yes, whom,
• 2:32:47
Speaker 6: no doubt you will be overjoyed to see old friends
• 2:32:51
Speaker 6: of yours, mister and missus Flint.
• 2:32:55
Speaker 5: Flint, you cannot mean Erin.
• 2:32:59
Speaker 6: And his blushing bride, Lilianne, from the fair domain of
• 2:33:04
Speaker 6: the Newcombe Farm in Brookville. They are here on their
• 2:33:07
Speaker 6: wedding trip, and have honored us with their presence for
• 2:33:10
Speaker 6: a brief sojourn. I must confess I was quite pleased
• 2:33:15
  Speaker 6: to see them.
• 2:33:16
Speaker 5: I shall not submit. How could Sarah presume to invite
• 2:33:20
  Speaker 5: them here?
• 2:33:21
Speaker 6: She didn't. They took her by surprise also, But I
• 2:33:25
Speaker 6: shouldn't worry. Doubtless they will be sufficiently entertained without our assistance.
• 2:33:31
Speaker 1: The doorbell rings. Helen starts with a suppressed shudder.
• 2:33:36
Speaker 6: That may be I cannot see him just yet. I
• 2:33:40
Speaker 6: will be in the library.
• 2:33:42
Speaker 1: Exit Helen Wright, enter, Henson Wright, Gozatt left up. Exit.
• 2:33:49
Speaker 1: Missus Brewster stands right center with an expectant look denoting triumph.
• 2:33:56
Speaker 1: After a pause, Henson chosen Leonard Fillmore, Exit Henson Wright,
• 2:34:02
Speaker 1: Missus Brewster suddenly, assuming a cold, distant manner.
• 2:34:07
Speaker 5: Good afternoon, mister Fillmore. You will pardon me. I was
• 2:34:13
  Speaker 5: expecting a gentleman.
• 2:34:15
Speaker 1: Starts to go upright, disdaining him. He has entered expectantly
• 2:34:21
Speaker 1: with a cordial look, but Wilt's half good naturedly at
• 2:34:25
  Speaker 1: her attitude.
• 2:34:26
Speaker 4: Oh, I see, sorry if I don't fit the bell.
• 2:34:31
Speaker 1: Missus Brewster, realizing her rudeness, speaking a bit more cordially.
• 2:34:36
Speaker 5: Of course, I meant another gentleman.
• 2:34:39
Speaker 4: Thanks, I feel better, but I call to see miss
• 2:34:42
  Speaker 4: Newcombe if I.
• 2:34:44
Speaker 5: May, who will have her informed that you are here?
• 2:34:48
Speaker 1: Exit? Missus Brewster. Right. Leonard is down right center by table,
• 2:34:54
Speaker 1: does not notice Aaron and Lilian who appear at top
• 2:34:58
Speaker 1: of stairs. They have tied it up. Aaron with hair
• 2:35:03
Speaker 1: shinily sleeked, et cetera, Lilian with change to brighter dress
• 2:35:08
Speaker 1: or shirt waist or with an added gay ribbon or
• 2:35:11
Speaker 1: something of the sort. They see Leonard steal down close
• 2:35:16
Speaker 1: to him, one on either side.
• 2:35:18
Speaker 10: How do you do?
• 2:35:20
Speaker 1: Leonard turns, sees them, almost overcome by surprise.
• 2:35:25
Speaker 3: What Aaron, lilyan mister and missus Aaron Flint?
• 2:35:31
  Speaker 1: If you please?
• 2:35:34
  Speaker 4: Never?
• 2:35:35
Speaker 3: You don't mean sure thing, asked my blushing bride.
• 2:35:40
Speaker 2: Yes, Lynne, that's us.
• 2:35:42
Speaker 4: Well, I'll be switched. You've put one over on us
• 2:35:46
Speaker 4: this time and no mistake.
• 2:35:48
Speaker 1: Shake gives one hand to each they shake most cordially.
• 2:35:54
Speaker 4: Wonders never cease. So you gave in at last, Lily Anne.
• 2:35:59
Speaker 2: Land Lynn, I just had to. They wouldn't no other
• 2:36:02
Speaker 2: ways I could see as ever get into New York.
• 2:36:05
Speaker 2: I just had to come and see you and Miss
• 2:36:06
Speaker 2: Newcomb and find out everything if you're going to save
• 2:36:09
Speaker 2: that boy, and all just couldn't stand it, and.
• 2:36:12
Speaker 4: A little thing like having erin here for a husband
• 2:36:15
  Speaker 4: didn't count.
• 2:36:17
Speaker 3: She's got me, though, and I'll keep even after we
• 2:36:21
Speaker 3: get back to the farm. Then my part will come in.
• 2:36:25
Speaker 2: I ain't worrying. Tell me, Lynn, how are you? What's
• 2:36:29
Speaker 2: the prospects? And everything?
• 2:36:31
Speaker 4: I can't tell you now. I'm almost too overcome and
• 2:36:35
Speaker 4: so glad to see you that I can hardly talk.
• 2:36:38
Speaker 4: Hope you'll stay long enough for us to give you
• 2:36:40
Speaker 4: the best time anybody ever had. But just at present,
• 2:36:43
Speaker 4: I'm up to my neck in the job of my life.
• 2:36:46
Speaker 4: The trial comes off day after tomorrow, and there's a
• 2:36:49
Speaker 4: lot to do before then.
• 2:36:51
Speaker 2: Oh, Lynn, you going to save him?
• 2:36:53
Speaker 4: Well, I can tell you this much. If I do,
• 2:36:57
Speaker 4: it will be owing to Miss Newcomb to what if
• 2:37:00
Speaker 4: he has done that? Woman's a wonder what she can't
• 2:37:04
Speaker 4: see through and figure out.
• 2:37:06
Speaker 3: De check is in instinct just like mine.
• 2:37:10
Speaker 2: You couldn't detect a clues big as an elephant unless
• 2:37:13
Speaker 2: it bit you. I ain't surprised at miss newcom though
• 2:37:16
Speaker 2: all their mystery stories and such.
• 2:37:19
Speaker 4: I'm waiting to see her. It's most important. So if
• 2:37:23
Speaker 4: you don't mind, will you just leave us alone for
• 2:37:25
Speaker 4: a few minutes. I'm sorry, but you understand.
• 2:37:29
Speaker 3: Sure we do. We'll just snoop around a little and
• 2:37:32
Speaker 3: see what we can see. Come along, sweetie.
• 2:37:38
Speaker 1: Lilian sniffing at his show's sentiment as she follows him
• 2:37:42
Speaker 1: to left second exit.
• 2:37:44
Speaker 2: H all right, len, maybe we'll find the kitchen so
• 2:37:47
Speaker 2: that I can see what kind of hired girl they got.
• 2:37:50
Speaker 2: I might get a few pointers on real style. So
• 2:37:53
Speaker 2: when you and your city bride come to Brookville on
• 2:37:55
  Speaker 2: your wedding trip.
• 2:37:56
Speaker 3: Oh come, Lily, Bud. I bet he rather haad you're
• 2:38:00
Speaker 3: cooking any day, wouldn't you, Lenne, You've said it erin,
• 2:38:06
Speaker 3: but I ain't objecting. To get a sniff of what
• 2:38:09
Speaker 3: we're going to get here for supper. I as hungry
• 2:38:12
Speaker 3: as seven beers in a wood chuck.
• 2:38:15
Speaker 1: Exit Aaron left second exit, so not to tell truth.
• 2:38:20
Speaker 2: I don't see his being married spoils your appetite. A
• 2:38:22
Speaker 2: bit sceptain for being married.
• 2:38:25
Speaker 1: Exit. Lilian left second exit. Len It smiles, turns of
• 2:38:30
Speaker 1: meet Sarah, who enters right.
• 2:38:33
Speaker 9: Oh, Lynne, here you are at last. I've been almost
• 2:38:36
Speaker 9: crazy waiting for you. Tell me? Did you fix it?
• 2:38:40
Speaker 9: Will that woman be here?
• 2:38:42
  Speaker 1: Yes?
• 2:38:43
Speaker 4: I had quite a time, but at last convinced Markham
• 2:38:46
Speaker 4: that it was of crucial importance. She has left the apartment,
• 2:38:50
Speaker 4: and at first he said we must come to headquarters
• 2:38:53
Speaker 4: where she is detained as a material witness. But finally
• 2:38:56
Speaker 4: he consented to bring her here. It looks like things
• 2:39:00
Speaker 4: were playing in our hands at last.
• 2:39:03
Speaker 9: Didn't I tell you they would? They are sure to
• 2:39:06
Speaker 9: come right in the end.
• 2:39:08
Speaker 4: Well, it's a good thing to hope anyway, and ask
• 2:39:12
Speaker 4: for hope. Do you think there's any I mean, do
• 2:39:16
  Speaker 4: you think.
• 2:39:17
Speaker 9: Sure there is? Lyn But you've got to fight for
• 2:39:20
Speaker 9: that too. It's her mother. If it wasn't for.
• 2:39:23
Speaker 4: Her, why what has she done now?
• 2:39:27
Speaker 9: I hate to tell you, Lene, but the truth is
• 2:39:31
Speaker 9: Helen has sent for that man to come back to
• 2:39:33
Speaker 9: take back what she said to him, to tell him.
• 2:39:36
  Speaker 9: She'll be his.
• 2:39:38
Speaker 4: But how can she when she knows.
• 2:39:42
Speaker 9: You mustn't let her assert your rights. She thinks she
• 2:39:46
Speaker 9: must sacrifice herself. But do you mean to stand back
• 2:39:50
Speaker 9: and let that man have her? Huh? I'd grab her
• 2:39:54
Speaker 9: up and carry her off by main force first.
• 2:39:57
  Speaker 1: Hmm.
• 2:39:57
Speaker 4: Caveman stuff a good idea.
• 2:40:00
Speaker 9: Yeah, well, I don't know about any cave part, but
• 2:40:03
Speaker 9: I guess you're just a man that could do it
• 2:40:05
Speaker 9: once you got your spunk up. But tell me, I'm
• 2:40:09
Speaker 9: dying to know. How is dick bearing.
• 2:40:12
Speaker 4: Up like a man? He has new courage thanks to you.
• 2:40:16
  Speaker 4: We can't fail now, we mustn't, But I guess it's
• 2:40:19
Speaker 4: still up to you, Miss Newcomb. The woman sticks to
• 2:40:22
Speaker 4: her story, hasn't budged an inch. The police believe her,
• 2:40:26
Speaker 4: and if you can't shake her, I don't know who
• 2:40:29
Speaker 4: or what can. She's a pretty slick one.
• 2:40:32
Speaker 9: All I want is one more chance at her. What
• 2:40:34
Speaker 9: we've found out in the past three weeks may be
• 2:40:37
Speaker 9: a little surprise for her and a few others. It
• 2:40:40
Speaker 9: takes a woman to see through a woman, and I
• 2:40:43
Speaker 9: began to see through that one in just about two minutes.
• 2:40:46
Speaker 9: That French accent didn't sound quite like the real thing
• 2:40:49
Speaker 9: to me, little as I know about it. She slipped
• 2:40:52
Speaker 9: back into plain American without noticing it once or twice.
• 2:40:56
Speaker 9: And I noticed what none of you men did. That
• 2:40:59
Speaker 9: her eyes don't match that black hair, and that that
• 2:41:02
Speaker 9: hair has been dyed. And she was a little too
• 2:41:05
Speaker 9: ready to explain things like she'd thought him out beforehand.
• 2:41:09
Speaker 9: And those two keys, two keys that fit the same lock,
• 2:41:13
Speaker 9: don't have different knicks to him. My fingers soon told.
• 2:41:17
Speaker 1: Me that the doorbell rings.
• 2:41:19
Speaker 9: Ah, there's the bell again. I guess that's about the
• 2:41:22
Speaker 9: busiest little doorbell in New York lately. Henson is earning
• 2:41:26
Speaker 9: his wages for once, and I mean to see that
• 2:41:29
  Speaker 9: he gets him.
• 2:41:30
  Speaker 1: Enter Henson, right.
• 2:41:32
Speaker 9: Henson, whoever that is, keep him out there in the
• 2:41:35
Speaker 9: hall till you let us know who it is.
• 2:41:37
Speaker 1: Exit Henson left up Exit. There is a slight pause.
• 2:41:43
Speaker 1: Sarah goes up and looks off left up exit.
• 2:41:46
  Speaker 9: It's them.
• 2:41:47
Speaker 4: They now vanish for the present. Now's your chance, er.
• 2:41:53
Speaker 9: I sort of dread it, after all.
• 2:41:55
Speaker 1: Exit Leonard left second exit. Sarah is going write center
• 2:42:01
Speaker 1: as Markham enters left up exit. He comes down, looking
• 2:42:06
Speaker 1: somewhat puzzled and not altogether pleased.
• 2:42:09
Speaker 9: Good afternoon, mister Markham.
• 2:42:12
Speaker 12: Well, I've brought the woman. What are you going to
• 2:42:15
  Speaker 12: do about it?
• 2:42:17
Speaker 9: Talk to her a few minutes, if you'll let me.
• 2:42:20
Speaker 12: I don't see what for That woman's talked and ben
• 2:42:23
Speaker 12: talked to till there's nothing more to be said. Don't
• 2:42:27
Speaker 12: you suppose we got everything out of her? She's got
• 2:42:29
  Speaker 12: to tell all.
• 2:42:30
Speaker 9: She's got to tell you, maybe, but not all she's
• 2:42:34
Speaker 9: got to tell if I can make.
• 2:42:37
Speaker 1: Her tell it, Markham, snaring with a sarcastic laugh.
• 2:42:42
Speaker 12: Queer kind of business, this anyway, sort of irregular. But
• 2:42:47
Speaker 12: Filmore told me it was for something that couldn't be
• 2:42:49
Speaker 12: done in any other way. And I don't want to
• 2:42:51
  Speaker 12: be contrary.
• 2:42:53
  Speaker 2: Now.
• 2:42:53
Speaker 12: I suppose it's all right. It's only fair to give
• 2:42:56
Speaker 12: you your chance. I suppose, though I must say, I don't
• 2:43:00
Speaker 12: see what you think you're going to do.
• 2:43:02
Speaker 9: What I'm going to do first, mister Markham, is to
• 2:43:04
Speaker 9: ask you to leave me alone with her.
• 2:43:07
Speaker 12: I don't see an objection to that, but of course
• 2:43:10
Speaker 12: I'll have to stick around.
• 2:43:12
Speaker 1: I want you to indicating left second exit in that room.
• 2:43:18
Speaker 9: I want you to hear every word that is said,
• 2:43:20
Speaker 9: and to act accordingly.
• 2:43:23
Speaker 12: That's satisfactory. She's out in the hall there. I told
• 2:43:26
Speaker 12: her to wait. Oh, Higgins is outside. I told him
• 2:43:31
Speaker 12: to trail along and keep his eyes pealed.
• 2:43:34
Speaker 1: Going to left second exit in.
• 2:43:36
Speaker 9: Here, Yes, you'll find mister Fillmore in there. He understands.
• 2:43:42
Speaker 12: Well, that's more than I do, but I'll chance it.
• 2:43:46
Speaker 1: Exit Malkham, left second exit. Sarah stands a moment as
• 2:43:50
Speaker 1: if to gain courage, then goes and looks off left
• 2:43:54
Speaker 1: up her exit. She makes a slight motion. Henson appears
• 2:43:59
Speaker 1: and left up entrance.
• 2:44:01
Speaker 9: Bring the woman in here? Henson exit.
• 2:44:04
Speaker 1: Henson, he reappears, shows in Delphine, and again exits. Delphine
• 2:44:11
Speaker 1: appears in left upper entrance. Paul's's looks about curiously, with
• 2:44:17
Speaker 1: a manner denoting some suspicion. She wears a long black
• 2:44:22
Speaker 1: veil over her hat, which she now throws back. Sarah,
• 2:44:26
Speaker 1: having withdrawn to write center, stands watching her. Delphine comes down,
• 2:44:33
Speaker 1: turns see. Sarah starts, so it.
• 2:44:38
  Speaker 8: Is you, madam.
• 2:44:40
Speaker 9: Won't you sit down?
• 2:44:41
Speaker 1: Delphine? She does not sit as yet.
• 2:44:45
Speaker 8: But why am I brought here? I do not understand.
• 2:44:50
Speaker 8: I was not told that it was to see you?
• 2:44:53
Speaker 8: What house is this Why do I come here?
• 2:44:57
Speaker 9: Well, you see, I thought you must think it kind
• 2:44:59
Speaker 9: of funny the way I left you so suddenly that day.
• 2:45:03
Speaker 9: And I haven't been feeling very well lately, so I
• 2:45:07
Speaker 9: thought it would be real kind of you to come
• 2:45:09
Speaker 9: and see me so I could apologize for carrying off
• 2:45:12
Speaker 9: your keys the way I did. You see, I was
• 2:45:15
Speaker 9: so excited after what I'd been through that I really
• 2:45:18
Speaker 9: didn't know what I was doing. I guess you understand.
• 2:45:23
Speaker 8: Oh, we satimon, Madame, But to come here it is strange. However,
• 2:45:30
Speaker 8: I am here, Yes.
• 2:45:32
Speaker 9: I do sit down. Might as well be comfortable. I
• 2:45:36
Speaker 9: hear you not staying at that flat anymore.
• 2:45:39
Speaker 8: No, it was so, as you said, gloomy, lonesome, and
• 2:45:45
Speaker 8: a thought of poor miss Nevarre. Oh it is too much,
• 2:45:50
Speaker 8: but I must not go away. They detain me as
• 2:45:53
Speaker 8: a witness. Oh, it is so terrible. I must tell
• 2:45:58
Speaker 8: it all in court.
• 2:46:00
Speaker 9: I don't wonder you dread it, but think of me
• 2:46:03
  Speaker 9: and my boy.
• 2:46:05
Speaker 8: It is too bad. I sympathize, but I must tell all.
• 2:46:10
Speaker 9: Yes, you must tell all. Aren't there a few things
• 2:46:15
Speaker 9: you haven't told yet?
• 2:46:18
Speaker 8: I do not understand. Does Madame intend to insinuate.
• 2:46:23
Speaker 9: No, that's a good plain English word, insinuate, And you
• 2:46:29
  Speaker 9: didn't say it a bit frenchy. But I wasn't insinuating.
• 2:46:34
Speaker 9: I'm just asking, couldn't you tell a few more things.
• 2:46:37
Speaker 8: If you would, Madame? What is it that you mean?
• 2:46:41
  Speaker 2: Oh?
• 2:46:41
Speaker 9: I wish you wouldn't keep calling me madame. What I
• 2:46:45
Speaker 9: meant was to maybe you could help me a little
• 2:46:47
Speaker 9: as to why those two keys were different. When you
• 2:46:50
Speaker 9: say they were for the same lock.
• 2:46:53
Speaker 8: Then I mistake, it does not matter, or we have
• 2:46:56
  Speaker 8: many keys.
• 2:46:58
Speaker 9: That those two were enough for me. They proved a
• 2:47:00
Speaker 9: pretty good fit to what I was trying to open.
• 2:47:03
Speaker 9: One fit the front door to your apartment, the other
• 2:47:07
Speaker 9: the back door to the kitchen at or whatever they
• 2:47:11
  Speaker 9: call it.
• 2:47:12
Speaker 8: But of course there must be a key to that
• 2:47:14
  Speaker 8: door also.
• 2:47:16
Speaker 9: Of course, Or how could you, after you came up
• 2:47:19
Speaker 9: in the elevator that day, have slipped around first to
• 2:47:22
Speaker 9: that back door, gone into the kitchen, through the dining room,
• 2:47:27
Speaker 9: into that other room, and.
• 2:47:29
Speaker 1: Then Delphine becoming alarmed but making a good effort to
• 2:47:35
Speaker 1: conceal her growing suspicion and fear.
• 2:47:39
Speaker 8: What do you mean I came in the front door
• 2:47:42
Speaker 8: directly to the room where miss Neval lay dead. Shot
• 2:47:45
Speaker 8: the boy your nephew, direct from the hall I entered
• 2:47:48
Speaker 8: after getting off the elevator.
• 2:47:51
Speaker 9: So you said, But it happens I didn't quite see
• 2:47:54
Speaker 9: it that way, So I found out which elevator boy
• 2:47:58
Speaker 9: brought you up. He remembers very well. You say you
• 2:48:02
Speaker 9: got off the elevator just as the shot was fired.
• 2:48:06
  Speaker 6: You didn't.
• 2:48:07
Speaker 9: He let you off at the fourth floor, went on
• 2:48:09
Speaker 9: up to the tenth and it was when he got
• 2:48:12
Speaker 9: back to the fourth floor that the gun was fired.
• 2:48:16
Speaker 9: He heard it. You had been off the elevator for
• 2:48:19
Speaker 9: five minutes or more.
• 2:48:21
Speaker 1: Delphine, who has sprung up beginning to lose control of herself.
• 2:48:26
  Speaker 5: It is not.
• 2:48:27
Speaker 8: True, he lies. Lies.
• 2:48:29
Speaker 9: I say, you had plenty of time to go around
• 2:48:32
Speaker 9: to the other door, look in to see who was there,
• 2:48:36
Speaker 9: see you a chance of having your revenge with somebody
• 2:48:39
Speaker 9: else to be suspected of your deed. Fire the shot,
• 2:48:43
Speaker 9: go back, come in.
• 2:48:45
Speaker 1: And Delphine in a furious rage.
• 2:48:49
Speaker 8: How dare you say such things? Accuse me of such
• 2:48:53
Speaker 8: an infamous act. It is an outrage. So that is
• 2:48:57
Speaker 8: why you've had me brought here to insult me, to
• 2:49:00
Speaker 8: accuse me of killing my dear mistress, who was all
• 2:49:04
Speaker 8: kindness to me, whom I loved. Oh, it is infamous.
• 2:49:09
Speaker 8: You shall pay for this. You will see. You will see.
• 2:49:13
Speaker 9: I see that you talk United States much better than
• 2:49:16
Speaker 9: you put on a French accent. For all, you are
• 2:49:19
Speaker 9: a very clever actress, Miss Bateman.
• 2:49:23
Speaker 8: What what do you mean?
• 2:49:25
Speaker 9: My name is Eliza Bateman. Of course it is your
• 2:49:31
Speaker 9: real name. Quite a well known actress too, and a
• 2:49:34
Speaker 9: pretty good one. French maids are quite a specialty of yours,
• 2:49:38
Speaker 9: and so your impersonation came in very handy when you
• 2:49:42
Speaker 9: went and hired out to Miss Navarre. Even she didn't
• 2:49:45
Speaker 9: see through your neat disguise and your assumed accent. It happens,
• 2:49:50
Speaker 9: I did, though I was sort of looking too. That
• 2:49:54
  Speaker 9: was the difference.
• 2:49:55
Speaker 8: Lies, lies, I say, you lie. It is all lies,
• 2:50:00
Speaker 8: an infamous, vile plot. I will not stay here.
• 2:50:04
Speaker 1: She is about to leave, But Sarah bas her Way
• 2:50:08
Speaker 1: so determinedly that she is compelled to stay though, fuming
• 2:50:12
Speaker 1: with rage and illy disguised fear.
• 2:50:16
Speaker 9: You see, I haven't been losing any time. Me and
• 2:50:20
Speaker 9: that plain country lawyer, the smart New York lawyers and
• 2:50:24
Speaker 9: great detectives have made so much fun of. We have
• 2:50:27
Speaker 9: done a little detective work on our own hooks and
• 2:50:30
Speaker 9: found out a few things about you, Miss Bateman.
• 2:50:35
Speaker 8: I know not that name. It is false.
• 2:50:38
Speaker 9: You mean Delphine is about that pistol too. It was
• 2:50:43
Speaker 9: Miss Navarrez. She kept it there. You knew where it
• 2:50:46
Speaker 9: was in that room. It was easy enough for you
• 2:50:50
Speaker 9: to get in the way. You did shoot over Dick
• 2:50:53
Speaker 9: Brewster's shoulder. Slip out and.
• 2:50:56
Speaker 8: Be still, Be still, I say, I will not listen.
• 2:51:00
Speaker 8: It is false. I did not do it. No, no,
• 2:51:04
Speaker 8: you lie, you lie.
• 2:51:07
Speaker 9: It is that truth.
• 2:51:09
Speaker 8: You say I killed my mistress, Miss Novar No, no,
• 2:51:14
Speaker 8: it was not she.
• 2:51:15
Speaker 1: I she stopped, suddenly, confused, trying to cover her mistake.
• 2:51:21
Speaker 8: I mean I could not she who was so good
• 2:51:25
  Speaker 8: to me?
• 2:51:26
Speaker 1: How can you say, Sarah going close to her, looking
• 2:51:31
Speaker 1: straight into her face and speaking very deliberately and distinctly.
• 2:51:38
Speaker 9: A woman seldom hits what she aims at. You didn't.
• 2:51:42
Speaker 8: What do you mean?
• 2:51:44
Speaker 9: I there was a man in that room also, I know, yes,
• 2:51:49
Speaker 9: but to me he was a stenger. Maybe a woman
• 2:51:53
Speaker 9: has the right to kill the man who has wronged her,
• 2:51:56
Speaker 9: the man who has promised to marry her and then
• 2:51:59
Speaker 9: thrown her over for another. Maybe she has a right
• 2:52:03
Speaker 9: to put on a disguise so she can follow him
• 2:52:06
Speaker 9: and prove just how false he is to her. I
• 2:52:09
Speaker 9: don't know. Maybe there is some excuse for a woman
• 2:52:13
Speaker 9: doing that. There may be some for you. You didn't
• 2:52:17
Speaker 9: mean to kill miss Navarre. I believe that, But you
• 2:52:21
Speaker 9: meant to kill him. It was him you shot at
• 2:52:25
Speaker 9: and you killed her.
• 2:52:27
Speaker 8: No, no, you shall not say that. It is not true.
• 2:52:31
Speaker 8: I did not know him. I never saw him.
• 2:52:34
Speaker 1: Before the door bell rings, Sarah goes to left up entrance,
• 2:52:38
Speaker 1: looks off. After a slight pause, enter Ralph Dearing. He
• 2:52:44
Speaker 1: comes part way down santer stops as he sees Delphine,
• 2:52:48
Speaker 1: surprised but not recognizing her.
• 2:52:52
Speaker 7: I beg, pardon, I did not know.
• 2:52:55
Speaker 9: Mister Dearing. Permit me to introduce miss Eliza Bateman.
• 2:52:59
Speaker 1: Dear too much taken aback to conceal his amazement.
• 2:53:04
Speaker 7: Eliza, you, what does this mean?
• 2:53:08
Speaker 9: So you recognize her?
• 2:53:11
Speaker 7: Why? Yes? I do now, though she is not the same.
• 2:53:17
Speaker 7: I never thought, of course you didn't.
• 2:53:20
Speaker 9: How could you have blonde turned into a brunette.
• 2:53:24
Speaker 1: Daring looks dumbfounded, but recognizes Delphine, who is unable longer
• 2:53:30
Speaker 1: to conceal her identity, she still tries desperately to brazen
• 2:53:35
  Speaker 1: it out.
• 2:53:36
Speaker 8: However, this gentleman is a stranger to me, you will excuse.
• 2:53:42
Speaker 1: She starts to go left up her exit, but Daring
• 2:53:45
Speaker 1: steps in her way, so she is compelled to remain.
• 2:53:49
Speaker 7: Wait. I begin to understand a very clever disguise, my girl.
• 2:53:55
Speaker 7: It's no wonder I didn't recognize you, so you were
• 2:53:59
Speaker 7: tracking me down seeking revenge. Eh. I see it was
• 2:54:06
Speaker 7: you who fired that shot at me.
• 2:54:10
Speaker 8: It is not true. It's a lie, a lie, I say,
• 2:54:14
  Speaker 8: let me pass.
• 2:54:15
Speaker 7: Not so fast. I guess your little game is up,
• 2:54:19
Speaker 7: miss Bateman. It didn't work, did it? And she took
• 2:54:24
  Speaker 7: my place?
• 2:54:25
Speaker 1: Delphine at first, seeming about to attempt to brazen it out,
• 2:54:31
Speaker 1: Then as Daring continues looking steadily at her, showing fright,
• 2:54:36
Speaker 1: which turns to despair and desperation, it's no use.
• 2:54:42
  Speaker 8: I see now it's true.
• 2:54:46
  Speaker 6: True.
• 2:54:47
Speaker 8: I can deny it no longer. Yes, it was you,
• 2:54:52
Speaker 8: you who man love to me, led me on till
• 2:54:56
Speaker 8: I gave all all, and then deserted me for another.
• 2:55:02
Speaker 8: It drove me mad. I was alone, outcast, all because
• 2:55:09
Speaker 8: of you and I resolved to have revenge. But it
• 2:55:13
Speaker 8: was not to kill you. No, no, not that. But
• 2:55:18
Speaker 8: that day when I saw you with her, heard what
• 2:55:21
Speaker 8: you said, I was mad, mad, and in that one
• 2:55:27
Speaker 8: moment of desperation, I tried to end at all. The
• 2:55:30
Speaker 8: pistol was there where she kept it, and he, the boy,
• 2:55:35
Speaker 8: he was there. I fired at you almost before I
• 2:55:40
Speaker 8: knew what I was doing. I didn't know I was mad, insane,
• 2:55:46
Speaker 8: I say, But I fired at you, I thought, but
• 2:55:51
Speaker 8: I killed her, the one who had been kind to me,
• 2:55:55
Speaker 8: whom I loved. Oh it was terrible. Take me away.
• 2:56:02
Speaker 8: I don't care now what becomes of me. You are
• 2:56:05
Speaker 8: not fit to live. But I didn't mean to be
• 2:56:08
Speaker 8: a what you say.
• 2:56:10
  Speaker 9: I am?
• 2:56:12
  Speaker 8: No?
• 2:56:13
Speaker 1: No, She breaks down, sobbing hysterically. Markham, who has entered
• 2:56:23
Speaker 1: second left entrance, goes to her, taking hold of her
• 2:56:27
  Speaker 1: not ungently.
• 2:56:29
Speaker 12: Leave her to me. I'll look after her.
• 2:56:32
Speaker 1: Helen has entered right in time to hear part of
• 2:56:35
Speaker 1: the foregoing unnoticed by the others. Markham supports Delphine and
• 2:56:41
Speaker 1: takes her up left. He pauses as Sarah goes up,
• 2:56:45
Speaker 1: speaking to him, what will.
• 2:56:47
Speaker 9: They do with her? Do you think?
• 2:56:50
  Speaker 4: No?
• 2:56:51
Speaker 12: Not so bad man's laughder temporary insanity.
• 2:56:55
Speaker 9: Perhaps, oh I'm glad, perhaps she had some excce.
• 2:57:01
Speaker 1: She turns, looks accusingly, scornfully at Dearing, who has a
• 2:57:06
Speaker 1: defiant attitude, paying no attention to her.
• 2:57:10
Speaker 12: And as to that other your boy, ma'am, why this
• 2:57:15
  Speaker 12: changes things?
• 2:57:16
Speaker 9: You think now that that he that thick.
• 2:57:21
Speaker 12: Well you and fillmore might come down to headquarters as
• 2:57:24
Speaker 12: soon as you can. It'll be all right for the
• 2:57:27
  Speaker 12: boy now.
• 2:57:29
Speaker 1: He goes out left, up her exit with Delphine, who
• 2:57:32
Speaker 1: is still sobbing and moaning, though more quietly than before.
• 2:57:38
Speaker 1: Deering follows them. After one look at Helen, whom he
• 2:57:42
Speaker 1: has discovered standing upright. She freezes him with a contemptuous glance.
• 2:57:49
Speaker 1: He shrugs his shoulders and exits left up exit. Sarah
• 2:57:55
Speaker 1: stands left center, looking after them, her hands clasped, almost weeping,
• 2:58:01
Speaker 1: but with a rapt joyful expression. After a slight pause,
• 2:58:07
Speaker 1: she turns sees Helen, who is still standing right, pale, emotionless,
• 2:58:14
Speaker 1: staring straight ahead as if dazed. Sarah going to Helen,
• 2:58:20
Speaker 1: taking hold of her gently, Helen.
• 2:58:24
Speaker 9: You have heard, you understand.
• 2:58:27
Speaker 6: He is the man who who.
• 2:58:30
Speaker 9: Yes, Helen, the one who was there that night the
• 2:58:33
Speaker 9: man who for revenge on you told the police that
• 2:58:37
Speaker 9: it was Dick. Oh, Helen, did you need this to
• 2:58:40
Speaker 9: show you what he is?
• 2:58:42
  Speaker 2: No?
• 2:58:43
Speaker 6: But this ends it.
• 2:58:45
Speaker 9: It was ended before, dear, Only you wouldn't believe it,
• 2:58:49
Speaker 9: aren't you? Glad? Thankful? It means that Dick will be free,
• 2:58:54
  Speaker 9: that you.
• 2:58:55
Speaker 6: Yes, and you have saved him, saved me. Oh, aunt, Sarah,
• 2:59:00
Speaker 6: can you ever forgive us? Forgive me?
• 2:59:03
Speaker 9: There there, my dear, there's nothing to forgive, not a thing.
• 2:59:09
Speaker 1: Helen is weeping. Sarah, with an arm about her, leads upright,
• 2:59:15
Speaker 1: but pauses as Leonard enters left second entrance. He pauses left.
• 2:59:22
Speaker 1: Sarah sees him, leaves Helen and goes to him, holding
• 2:59:26
Speaker 1: out both hands, which he takes.
• 2:59:29
Speaker 9: Oh Lene, isn't it wonderful?
• 2:59:32
Speaker 4: Wonderful? Yes, it is all wonderful, and you are the
• 2:59:36
Speaker 4: most wonderful of all. I declare you are a regular
• 2:59:40
  Speaker 4: Miss Sherlock Holms.
• 2:59:42
Speaker 1: Helen, at Leonard's entrance, gives him one glance, her face
• 2:59:46
Speaker 1: showing deep emotion, indicating that she dare not trust herself
• 2:59:51
Speaker 1: to speak to him. She exits right, pshah.
• 2:59:55
Speaker 9: I haven't done anything to any rate If I have.
• 2:59:58
Speaker 9: I've had pretty good help, and now I'm going to
• 3:00:02
Speaker 9: to him, and you are going with me?
• 3:00:06
Speaker 1: Yes, but looking right longingly Sarah looking round.
• 3:00:13
Speaker 9: Oh, I see she's run away. Wait, going right, and
• 3:00:18
Speaker 9: don't forget what I told you Len.
• 3:00:20
Speaker 4: About Oh, I don't think that will be necessary now
• 3:00:24
Speaker 4: that cave staff. I have something better than that. Look
• 3:00:30
Speaker 4: what Erin gave me.
• 3:00:32
Speaker 1: Takes a red apple from his pocket, holds it up.
• 3:00:36
Speaker 4: I don't think she'll be able to resist that, do you?
• 3:00:41
Speaker 9: No? Not? When you go with it?
• 3:00:44
Speaker 1: Exit Sarah right, looking back at him with an encouraging smile.
• 3:00:49
Speaker 1: He goes over to left Center, stands there waiting, looking
• 3:00:54
Speaker 1: eagerly towards right, the hand in which is the apple
• 3:00:58
Speaker 1: behind him. After a slight pause, enter Sarah right, leading Helen,
• 3:01:05
Speaker 1: who comes timidly looking down. Sarah urges her on to center. Helen,
• 3:01:12
Speaker 1: she looks up at him, then her glance again falls,
• 3:01:16
Speaker 1: and she turns as if to go, but Sarah holds her,
• 3:01:20
Speaker 1: pushing her gently towards Leonard. Helen yields slowly. Leonard advances
• 3:01:28
Speaker 1: a step, holds out the apple, smiling with an adoring
• 3:01:32
  Speaker 1: look at her.
• 3:01:34
Speaker 4: Look from the old orchard our Eden Will you share
• 3:01:39
  Speaker 4: it with me?
• 3:01:42
Speaker 1: She falters, looking down, then up again, meeting his gaze
• 3:01:47
Speaker 1: with a tender smile, yields. He takes her in his arms,
• 3:01:53
Speaker 1: puts apple to her lips, kisses it where her lips were,
• 3:01:57
Speaker 1: then kisses her Sarah. Her face radiant has gone upright,
• 3:02:04
Speaker 1: and exits quietly just as the curtain falls. Curtain end
• 3:02:11
  Speaker 1: of Act four,
