- 0:00You're listening to Look Who's Talking.
- 0:18I'm your co-host, Simone McEvoy, and we're here with the lovely Jessica Coffie.
- 0:23Jessica, how are you doing this morning?
- 0:25I am good.
- 0:26How are you doing, Simone?
- 0:27I'm doing pretty good, Jessica.
- 0:28Good.
- 0:29What do you think about that eclipse that happened?
- 0:32Oh, the eclipse was amazing.
- 0:34It was amazing.
- 0:35I'll say that it was fun to kind of look at it and experience a celestial event you don't
- 0:41see every day.
- 0:42Yeah, I know.
- 0:43So the eclipse did, it was full in Paducah, which is where I'm from.
- 0:48Okay.
- 0:49So I was calling my parents and I was like, are y'all outside yet?
- 0:52Did it happen yet?
- 0:54But it was a big to do in Paducah.
- 0:56So they had glass, of course everybody had glasses, but they had the shirts, they made
- 1:02just different eclipse specials in the restaurants for that day.
- 1:06So it seemed like it was really exciting.
- 1:09Yeah.
- 1:10I think that it's pretty exciting to see and I've seen in a lot of places that were in
- 1:14direct line how dark it got.
- 1:16Yeah.
- 1:17Yeah.
- 1:18When I was, I was in Frankfurt at the time and it got a bit darker, but it wasn't as
- 1:21dark as I'd expected.
- 1:23Because we had all those rain clouds.
- 1:25Oh yeah.
- 1:26It was such a mess.
- 1:27And it never rained that day, I don't think.
- 1:29Yeah.
- 1:30It was just cloudy for cloudiness sake, I guess.
- 1:31But today I feel like we've gotten a tsunami.
- 1:35It's been raining all day.
- 1:36Oh, it's been raining constantly.
- 1:39I know there was the old saying, you know, April showers bring May flowers, but I'm tired
- 1:43of the rain already.
- 1:44Well, they bring allergies too.
- 1:46And I've been sneezing.
- 1:47So there's that.
- 1:49Yes, absolutely.
- 1:51Well, Jessica, you know, it might be, it might be time for a break, like perhaps a coffee
- 1:58break.
- 1:59So Jessica, what's our coffee break for today?
- 2:11So the coffee break today, what I want to tell everybody is because of the rain showers
- 2:17we're having today, life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass.
- 2:22It's about learning how to dance in the rain.
- 2:25So for me, that means no matter what obstacles you may face, the rain, with the rain, you're
- 2:32going to get wet.
- 2:34But that doesn't mean that you can't, you have to stop.
- 2:37That means just continue to go.
- 2:39No matter what you're doing, continue to go.
- 2:42To find the joy during the storm.
- 2:44Exactly.
- 2:45Exactly.
- 2:46I don't understand that.
- 2:47Because a lot of storms, hey, with storms, with the rain, that produces growth.
- 2:54And I think it's important for everyone to know in a storm, that could be your stepping
- 3:00stone to the next level.
- 3:02Okay.
- 3:03Okay.
- 3:04Yeah.
- 3:05Sometimes, you know, our challenges bring forth that growth that we really need to move
- 3:09forward.
- 3:10Yeah, exactly.
- 3:11Exactly.
- 3:12So what I want to do is introduce our special guest for today.
- 3:18Today we have a, again, a very special guest.
- 3:23Her name is Leah Williams, and she is a Head Start parent.
- 3:28So can we get a round of applause for Leah?
- 3:31Well, I'll clap.
- 3:35Or we'll get some horns.
- 3:39Of course.
- 3:40I'm excited to have Leah come to the podcast.
- 3:44I've been knowing Leah for a little bit, at least since her child has been in our Head
- 3:49Start program.
- 3:51And I got excited about interviewing Leah because, one, I think she has a great story.
- 3:59And I got to learn more about Leah during a parent event that we had, and we did vision
- 4:05boards.
- 4:06So we want to talk a little bit about that.
- 4:09Leah, how are you?
- 4:10I'm good.
- 4:11Hey, y'all.
- 4:12Hey.
- 4:13So, you know, I want to discuss you as a parent.
- 4:19How is it being a part of the Head Start program?
- 4:22I love it.
- 4:23Honestly, like, it's probably the most community that I've felt since I had a kid.
- 4:30You bump your head a lot when you learn how to parent, but I've also learned, like, over
- 4:35the past three years, nobody has a handbook, and being here, people constantly reassure
- 4:39you.
- 4:40And then it's such a great opportunity to be a part of just because you learn so much
- 4:47through other people.
- 4:50And there's always somebody you can look to for advice when it comes to parenting.
- 4:54Right.
- 4:55Right.
- 4:56I like that.
- 4:57I like the fact that you said a community, because we all know it takes a village to
- 5:01raise a child.
- 5:02Oh, yes.
- 5:03It definitely takes a village, but we at Community Action and with Head Start love the community
- 5:11aspect because, you know, as a parent, you trust us to guide your child while you're
- 5:18away.
- 5:19Oh, yes.
- 5:20Working, going to school, whatever parents are doing, you all trust us with your children.
- 5:26And I can say for me, I don't have any children.
- 5:29However, I have over 1800 children within the program.
- 5:34So you know, I might not be a parent at home, but I definitely feel like I have that influence
- 5:39to the kids who are in our program.
- 5:44What I want to know is how long has your child been a part of the program?
- 5:49I think, let's see, it's 2024.
- 5:52So he started attending here in August of 2023.
- 5:59And have you seen, like talk about some of the differences in which you see within him
- 6:04by being a part of the program?
- 6:07So my son, he's an only child.
- 6:11So he stayed home with me for pretty much like the first two years of my life.
- 6:15So he wasn't really that social when it came to like other kids.
- 6:20He didn't really know how to interact with them.
- 6:22And he's a COVID baby, isn't he?
- 6:24He is.
- 6:25Oh my gosh.
- 6:26Wow.
- 6:27He was already so intelligent before he enrolled.
- 6:30But also I watched him grow in that aspect.
- 6:32And then just socially, he's become a butterfly.
- 6:36He loves school.
- 6:37He loves hanging out with friends because mama does not want any more kids.
- 6:42So I love that he has a place to come and be around people his age.
- 6:46Yeah.
- 6:47Yeah.
- 6:48What about within his education?
- 6:51And have either you all have learned together about just what he learns in school?
- 6:59Does that spill over to home?
- 7:02Tell us a little bit about that.
- 7:03Well, he is early head start.
- 7:05So I don't know if they're like so far into the core of core learning, but he does really
- 7:10well with, I was shocked actually this morning.
- 7:13We've been working on counting and I don't know what the people do here to get him to
- 7:17sit down.
- 7:18But when we're at home, he will not sit and do like letters and numbers with me.
- 7:21So we work on it spotty.
- 7:23But this morning we were in his room actually getting ready and I was like, hey, where are
- 7:27your shoes?
- 7:28Are they downstairs?
- 7:29He said, no, I have one, two, three, four, five, six pairs of shoes on that shelf over
- 7:33there.
- 7:34I said, oh wow.
- 7:35Like it surprised me every day.
- 7:37Yeah.
- 7:38Yeah.
- 7:39That's good because I hear all the time parents say, well, my kid doesn't do this at home
- 7:45or they don't eat this at home.
- 7:48I'm like, no, they eat everything here or they do this.
- 7:53And you know, I see that parents get surprised when children bring up certain things.
- 7:58Oh yes.
- 7:59I had one kid and a couple of years ago and she was like, do you know what photosynthesis
- 8:06mean?
- 8:07And I was like, shocked.
- 8:08Oh my goodness.
- 8:09Like I didn't know that, you know, you know, the kids, some of the things that they know
- 8:17it's amazing to a lot of people.
- 8:20It is.
- 8:21It's shocking.
- 8:22It's always a surprise.
- 8:23When your two year old comes up and says, mom, that's a velociraptor.
- 8:26I was like, how did you even pronounce that?
- 8:28You were just born.
- 8:30Right.
- 8:31So what about, let's talk about some of the positive changes that have happened, whether
- 8:38in your son's life or in your life since you've been a part of the Head Start family.
- 8:44So since I've been a part of the Head Start family, it actually gave me like motivation
- 8:49to go back to college.
- 8:51So it's great that I have a safe space to like have for my son when I work on school
- 8:55work or do my internships or anything like that.
- 8:59So I just feel like that's really great.
- 9:01That's a positive change for us.
- 9:04And that's really like the gist of things.
- 9:06I'm focused on college and just trying to create a better place than what I grew up
- 9:13in for my son to grow up in.
- 9:15Right.
- 9:16Right.
- 9:17One thing that stood out to me when we had the vision board, I still talk about it today
- 9:21because that's been one of my favorite family engagement events.
- 9:27We didn't have a large turnout of parents, but you definitely came.
- 9:32We had another person.
- 9:35But I think what you did for staff is really like let us know, hey, our work is not in
- 9:44vain.
- 9:46What we do does work.
- 9:49But what really stood out is your vision board because I still remember it.
- 9:54You put change and stability on the board.
- 9:56That was your theme.
- 9:58And hearing you say you all are positive people, that made me want to change some things in
- 10:08my life.
- 10:09And I think whether you know it or not, that really reached a lot of our staff.
- 10:13Oh, I'm happy for that.
- 10:15Honestly, when I put change and stability on my board, some people just say it, words
- 10:21are words for some people, but that's something I'm constantly living by.
- 10:25I had my son when I was 19, Buckwild.
- 10:29That's what I was.
- 10:30And I can't even say that it changed immediately.
- 10:32Some people are like, oh, I had a kid and it sat me down.
- 10:35No, I had a kid and I was 19 and I was still firm set on I'm not going to let having a
- 10:40kid just because I do that, my life's not just going to stand still.
- 10:44So although I always focused on being a parent, there was like just stuff.
- 10:48I was into like partying and stuff like that that maybe should have calmed down a bit.
- 10:52So this year and then like the back half of last year, it was so important to me to like
- 10:58start honing in on my intelligence and also just create a safe space.
- 11:03That's not something I really grew up in with the parents that I was dealt.
- 11:07So that's where the change part comes in.
- 11:10Hey, it's time to buckle down.
- 11:11You don't want to look up and be 30 years old, nothing going.
- 11:15My kid would be 23.
- 11:18He would be 10 by that time.
- 11:20So like, why would I look up then and not be a positive example?
- 11:24So that was just something very important for me to put on my vision board because I'm
- 11:29big into like that that you call that buzzword that's been in manifesting like, yeah, write
- 11:36it down.
- 11:37It's going to come true.
- 11:38It's going to come to fruition.
- 11:39Yeah, just keep saying it.
- 11:40Yeah, I like that.
- 11:41I like that.
- 11:42I like I mean, I just love your story.
- 11:45I love it because and I probably don't even know the half.
- 11:49Oh, no, not even a quarter.
- 11:50You know, but it is so encouraging to know that, you know, everybody's dealt cards and
- 12:00there are only two decisions you can make.
- 12:03You can either make like run with it and make your life better or you can run with it and,
- 12:09you know, follow whatever that card is.
- 12:13And you know, you have flipped it.
- 12:15You like, you know what?
- 12:17I control this.
- 12:18Let me flip these cards.
- 12:20So it's an easy thing to say.
- 12:21Honestly, it really is.
- 12:23But it took me a long time.
- 12:25Like I used to live in like self pity for like a long, long time.
- 12:30And then I just had to like snap out of it one day.
- 12:32And honestly, you know, I was scrolling down my phone and this is like really what snapped
- 12:37me out of it and made me do a 360.
- 12:40I was scrolling and it's like, have you ever watched a video?
- 12:44I'm like, wow, this is a harsh reality.
- 12:46Are they talking to me?
- 12:47You know, the man on the video was like, your story is not significant.
- 12:51It's not unique.
- 12:52You don't get to just sit there and pity yourself and say, well, it's okay that my life turns
- 12:57out like this because this is how I was raised or these are the cards I was dealt.
- 13:01But it's like, your story is not unique.
- 13:03Everyone goes through a lot.
- 13:04It's up to you to make a change.
- 13:06And that quote you read on coffee break, that's actually throughout my high school, that was
- 13:12like the sticker that was outside of my shower.
- 13:15It's still up in my dad's house to this day.
- 13:17And I used to like read it every single day because it's really a motivator that no matter
- 13:22what's going on around you, like you have to push through.
- 13:25Right, right.
- 13:26And so many times people see the storm and they think that it's bad.
- 13:31You know, I got to get an umbrella out.
- 13:33I can't get wet.
- 13:35But what if you lost the umbrella?
- 13:37What if you got wet?
- 13:39You know, what if the very thing that people think like, oh, storm.
- 13:45Break.
- 13:46That's the very thing that helps the grass and the trees grow.
- 13:49Absolutely.
- 13:50You know, so.
- 13:51Storms build character.
- 13:52Like, I don't think I'd be half the person I am today if I didn't have to like go through
- 13:57all the adversity that I did.
- 13:59So even though I wouldn't have liked some of the stuff that happened, I appreciate it
- 14:03because it's made me much stronger.
- 14:05Right, right.
- 14:06It builds resilience.
- 14:08Absolutely.
- 14:09So I think it's time for us to take a break.
- 14:12What we'll do is come back and talk to our Head Start parent, Miss Leah Williams, and
- 14:18we'll be right back.

- 15:55Welcome back to Look Who's Talkin'.
- 15:58We're here with our host Jessica Coffey as well as our special guest.
- 16:05So, how was the vision board project for you?
- 16:13You want me to answer?
- 16:16I love it.
- 16:17Honestly, I feel like more people should have participated.
- 16:23To be involved with the staff, I feel like that's very important.
- 16:27I don't know who wouldn't want to be personable with people that are around your child every
- 16:31day.
- 16:32Also, it was just a great motivator.
- 16:33A lot of us don't have that positivity in our life.
- 16:35We feed into negativity.
- 16:38I feel like it was a really important event and it was something that was definitely there.
- 16:42The food was fire.
- 16:45We did.
- 16:46We had a great little brunch that the site director here, Tracy Norwood, did for us.
- 16:54You know what, I was just excited to get out of the office because usually I'm stuck in
- 17:00the office doing all kinds of stuff.
- 17:02But I intentionally was like, nope, I'm getting up.
- 17:06I'm leaving.
- 17:07I want to participate with this family event.
- 17:09So that's what I'm going to do.
- 17:11I just think it was divine intervention that we were there.
- 17:18Everybody was opening up.
- 17:19It was just the perfect environment for me.
- 17:24The energy was great.
- 17:26I loved it.
- 17:28It was great.
- 17:29So I want to get into, again, with your vision board, your thing was stability and change.
- 17:37That literally has stuck with me.
- 17:38That's good.
- 17:39I love that.
- 17:40It literally has stuck with me.
- 17:42So in that, you mentioned that you were going to school.
- 17:46Tell us about that change in your life.
- 17:49So to get the full gist of it, you'll have to understand square one before I had a kid.
- 17:56So I graduated high school when I was 17.
- 17:58I was one of the youngest in my class.
- 18:01When I was a kid, my grandma used to drill into me, like, you have to go to school.
- 18:06When your parents overdrill something, you're like, shoot.
- 18:09You're going to do the opposite of that.
- 18:11So when I graduated, I had enrolled in college.
- 18:16So I ended up attending, and I think my problem is I stayed in my hometown.
- 18:22So everything and my friends that weren't in school, it was just too accessible.
- 18:27So I couldn't focus, left school, got pregnant, went back, had a son, adversity struck again,
- 18:35couldn't focus, left school.
- 18:37So this year I picked it back up.
- 18:39And now that I've got my footing, and I can't even say completely, but I've got my foot
- 18:44in parenting, it's been going great.
- 18:48And then my advisor at school, she's great.
- 18:51She's constantly just encouraging.
- 18:53So school's top tier right now.
- 18:56Good.
- 18:57Good.
- 18:58So what are your aspirations?
- 18:59What are you going to do with your degree?
- 19:01And what degree are you getting?
- 19:02Okay, I'm getting my degree in LPN.
- 19:05So I decided to do that just because it's like a cheaper route.
- 19:08So I'll be done with that by December of next year, and then whichever hospital I attend,
- 19:15I'm going to go through them to get my BS in.
- 19:17So I'm going to be RN, and that's what I'm going for.
- 19:20So do you have a natural...
- 19:24Because when I think of a nurse, I think of someone who is caring for people.
- 19:29Is that like your personality?
- 19:31Yeah.
- 19:32So I love people.
- 19:34That's one thing, except for mean people, I don't like them.
- 19:37But other people, I flock to people.
- 19:40I'm very social.
- 19:41I'm a butterfly.
- 19:42And then also, I like to provide help to those that are in need.
- 19:50Even if it's medically, socially, I've always been the fix it person.
- 19:55It's been a downfall a lot, but I still, I'm going to die on that horse because I like
- 20:00to be the fix it person for other people.
- 20:02And I would also like to, with my nursing, go into pediatrics and just mix that together
- 20:07because I feel like kids sometimes are very underserviced and they're ignored.
- 20:12And then a lot of parents also, with the financial struggles everybody's going through nowadays,
- 20:18they can't be there with their kid and they can't be present 24 seven for a sick child.
- 20:22So that's my aspiration to work with kids or also L and D with moms.
- 20:27Got you.
- 20:28Did your past or how you grew up influence this direction and how?
- 20:36Absolutely.
- 20:37Just because in my past, I feel like as a child that grew up how I did, people weren't
- 20:44always as attentive to me as they should have been.
- 20:47And I grew up like just a frustrated, like angry person.
- 20:51And I feel like if someone would have intervened and had that like maternal feeling towards
- 20:56me or if I just felt like someone's child 24 seven as you should.
- 21:00Yeah, absolutely.
- 21:01So if I can be there for anyone at any time for anything, I'm going to do that because
- 21:07I know how it feels to like feel just neglected or not viewed.
- 21:11Right, right.
- 21:13And did that influence like you becoming a parent?
- 21:19Not necessarily becoming a parent, but how you parent your child.
- 21:24Absolutely.
- 21:25Like I promised myself that I would never like put my kid through some of the stuff
- 21:30that I went through, like even in my grandmother raising me.
- 21:34And I hope she doesn't see this because she likes to.
- 21:38But she was like I was the only girl in a three kid household.
- 21:44So it was my older brother, me and my younger brother.
- 21:46And it always seemed that they were coddled.
- 21:49And then I was the person that got like Rod and Steph just like always brought down on
- 21:53me.
- 21:54And then my mom, she was just never there like in and out of jail, on and off drugs.
- 21:59So I was like I just will never be that person for my kid.
- 22:01And when I birthed my son and like I held him for the first time, I was like, wow, I
- 22:05just can't imagine putting a child through anything like the way I was raised.
- 22:10Gotcha.
- 22:11Gotcha.
- 22:12Wow.
- 22:13That's good that you took as Beyonce would say lemons and made lemonade.
- 22:19You know, on some of I want to talk about the opportunities you would like to see.
- 22:29Through the Head Start program, you know, we try to do an array of events or kind of
- 22:37education for our parents, whether that's how to cook or possibly financial things.
- 22:44What are some of the things that you would like for to see us do in the financial aspect?
- 22:51I think it would be a beautiful idea to bring in a financial coach.
- 22:54I know as a parent, it is really hard to like it's really hard to allocate funds and stuff
- 23:02like that.
- 23:03And then also, when I spoke to you all and then just like any step, any of the higher
- 23:10up staff, it's very motivating to see people that look like me.
- 23:13Yeah, because most of the people that I've met have been people of color, regardless,
- 23:18speak about their higher education.
- 23:19And it's very motivating to see where you are in life.
- 23:23So I feel like that would be a great event to host for parents just speaking on higher
- 23:27education and motivating them to get credentials, whether it's technical credentials, degree
- 23:32certifications.
- 23:33I think that would be a great idea.
- 23:34Yeah, I didn't you know, I didn't think about that because, you know, I do believe everyone
- 23:40has a story and a journey that they've traveled.
- 23:44You know, no one knows.
- 23:46But I went to community college first because I wasn't I wasn't ready to leave home because
- 23:52I knew if I left, oh, honey, because I was about to be in these streets.
- 23:57Okay.
- 23:58However, I went to community college first.
- 24:02And I hear so many people like, kind of down in community college, like, that's not a university.
- 24:08But guess what?
- 24:10You know, going all for even a university isn't always for everyone.
- 24:15No, it's not.
- 24:16You know, the technical field is important.
- 24:18And you know, they make money, money, depending on what what you do.
- 24:22So everybody's out here trying to be rappers and we need plumbers.
- 24:25Right.
- 24:26Exactly.
- 24:27Exactly.
- 24:28But you know what?
- 24:29I want to get into what do you see or what how would you encourage whether it's a woman
- 24:40or a man or just someone or parents that have kids in the Head Start program, whether early
- 24:48head start or head start, what kind of encouragement would you give?
- 24:53I would just say, like, stay constantly involved in your kids development.
- 24:59Don't be too hard on your child, because I mean, that's something I have to work on because
- 25:03they make mistakes.
- 25:04They're like little bitty people.
- 25:06And we watch them grow so fast and they become so communicative that we think that they know
- 25:11what's going on all the time.
- 25:13That's not it.
- 25:14And then also to all the parents, don't lose yourself in being a parent, because I know
- 25:19a lot of people become parents and then they don't have any goals and aspirations for themselves
- 25:23anymore.
- 25:24But I'd say also focus on yourself because focusing on yourself in turn will create a
- 25:29better lifestyle for you and your children.
- 25:34And also, like Jessica said, don't take shame in going to community college.
- 25:37Like they literally pay me to go to school.
- 25:39So if you want higher education, go and get it.
- 25:42They are paying her to go.
- 25:44Listen, this has been a great show.
- 25:47What I want to say is the word of the day is change.
- 25:53I think that's a fitting and a great word of the day.
- 25:57We want to thank Ms. Leah Williams, one of our Head Start parents who has, whether she
- 26:04knows it or not, made a difference in my life because I, from our situations communicating
- 26:12with you, have seen a brighter way of being able to get parents involved in communicating.
- 26:20So I thank you for coming to the show.
- 26:23And this is Look Who's Talking.
