- 0:00OK, so as an autistic person, here is like the number one
- 0:03skill that I lack completely. And I'm guarantee you do too.
- 0:09Oh yeah, I'm on a boat. OK, so right now I'm in the
- 0:16middle of the Irish Sea. I'm on a boat, I'm on a vessel,
- 0:20and I'm going to Canada. But that's not important right
- 0:23now. What's important is
- 0:25understanding the concept of this video.
- 0:27And I'm going to place you guys down here and we're going to
- 0:30we're going to sit and talk. OK, So I doesn't have a crazy
- 0:34video, but you get the idea. Autism comes with many different
- 0:39things. One of them is like, you know,
- 0:41the tribe of impairment, which is like social imagination and
- 0:43social communication and then just communication in general,
- 0:45right? Which we all know, like autism
- 0:46is a communication disorder and it's kind of integrity.
- 0:51What, what is really interesting is that there are certain
- 0:53fractions that encompass that really make a difference to how
- 0:56somebody communicates. So one of the things I've learnt
- 1:00about recently is the rejection sensitive dysphoria, which is
- 1:05basically that there's there's a few different components and I'm
- 1:08learning more about it every single day.
- 1:10One is that you are trying to always impress people.
- 1:15So you become a people please it so that you get people to like
- 1:18you because you have a predetermined idea that people
- 1:21don't like you, which is basically the number one issue
- 1:24that I have. One of the things that I lack is
- 1:26the ability to know if another person likes me, if another
- 1:31person is interested in what I'm talking about, if another person
- 1:34is cool with me. And so because of that, my
- 1:37default is that I just feel like everybody doesn't like me.
- 1:42But what what does this do? What what kind of complications
- 1:45does this implement? Well, for a star, if you go with
- 1:48the narrative that nobody likes you, we're going to make a cup
- 1:50of tea. If you think or if you believe
- 1:54that everybody default doesn't like you, then you always come
- 1:58from a place of trying to keep up, trying to do your best.
- 2:01And by doing this, you're always trying to just prove somebody
- 2:04something that's never going to be proven because A, if they
- 2:06don't like you, they're never going to like you.
- 2:08B, maybe they do like you and you're thinking they don't like
- 2:12you, which makes no sense, right?
- 2:14Let's have a look. How do you work this machine?
- 2:19Oh, a dash of milk. Check.
- 2:20We can try and get just milk. That would work.
- 2:24Let's try this. See what happens.
- 2:31Here's the milk. Oh my God, it's doing it.
- 2:38Wow. It's warm.
- 2:44Warm milk. Yes.
- 2:47OK, so I'll have my warm milk like a baby.
- 2:53It's really interesting. I never realized that I lacked
- 2:56the ability to understand people's intentions about me
- 3:00until somebody pointed out to me.
- 3:03I was having a discussion with somebody and they basically said
- 3:07that they didn't like me. And I was like, Dang it, why
- 3:09don't you like me? And that's beside the point.
- 3:13The point was this person said that they didn't like me.
- 3:16And I was like, Dang. And then I was like trying to
- 3:19figure out, like, all the reasons why why wouldn't
- 3:20somebody like me? What's wrong with me?
- 3:21What what do I do that's wrong? What Why wouldn't someone want
- 3:24to like me? Why even, you know, what can I
- 3:26do to improve that someone does like me?
- 3:28And I realized the feedback from other people, my peers, my
- 3:31family, my my partner, everyone was saying to me, Dan, who cares
- 3:34if somebody doesn't like you? Well, this person's a nobody.
- 3:38And if they don't like you, So what?
- 3:40I'm like, yeah. But they didn't understand why I
- 3:43was so obsessed with wanting to figure out why this person
- 3:45didn't like me. And I didn't know why this
- 3:47person didn't like me. And that it was an issue that
- 3:50people typically don't obsess over the fact that people don't
- 3:54like them. And then it got me into thinking
- 3:57about people pleasing. We're always trying to keep up
- 4:00kind of like, if somebody doesn't like you and they're
- 4:02being mean to you, you're always trying to like be nice with
- 4:05them. And it's kind of like so weird,
- 4:06isn't it? Why would you be nice to
- 4:07somebody? Or why would you strive to try
- 4:09and be nice to somebody who's just a, a hole with you?
- 4:14That makes no sense either. And so then I realised this
- 4:19rejection sensitive dysphoria actually encompasses the number
- 4:23one thing that I lack or the skill that I lack from just a
- 4:26person, which is being able to judge how someone perceives me
- 4:31and be able to be OK with that because I don't know.
- 4:34But my default is wrong. It's a really weird educator.
- 4:37It might be a, sounds like a crazy concept, but this is how
- 4:41it is. And it's so fascinating to me
- 4:44because like people say, what's the biggest struggle?
- 4:46What I didn't realise, but this is the biggest struggle I have
- 4:50along with OCD, because when you combine sensitive or rejection
- 4:55sensitive dysphoria with OCD, you get a combination which is
- 4:59kind of like, oh, like it's a, it's not a good combination.
- 5:05I want to know what your thoughts are on it.
- 5:07And also, guys, if you haven't already, please check out my
- 5:10latest autism confidence building program, the

- 5:22I think the news is on. There's like a North Korean
- 5:25parade or something, but I'm going to have my warm milk.
- 5:29Relax. I'll get another 4 hours on this
- 5:32boat and then I get on a plane for seven hours.
- 5:36So that's fun. All right guys, I'll see you
- 5:38soon. Peace.
