- 0:13Speaker 1: What defines a cult classic. According to Oxford Dictionary, a
- 0:17Speaker 1: cult classic is a movie or book that is popular
- 0:20Speaker 1: or fashionable among a particular group or section of society.
- 0:24Speaker 1: There are tons of films that earn the title of
- 0:27Speaker 1: a cult classic, but one of them stands out among
- 0:30Speaker 1: the rest as an almost certified example. Nineteen eighty eight's
- 0:34Speaker 1: Killer Clowns from Outer Space, directed by Stephen Kyoto and
- 0:37Speaker 1: written by brothers Charles and Edward Kyoto. Killer Clowns was
- 0:40Speaker 1: a passion project born from the love for a genre
- 0:43Speaker 1: and the bygone peak era of monster effects and plain
- 0:47Speaker 1: old fun at the movies. On this episode of Beyond
- 0:50Speaker 1: the Blood, myself, along with my co host Chuck Savage
- 0:53Speaker 1: and our guests Robbie Miles, will be breaking down the
- 0:56Speaker 1: audio commentary from the Kyoto brothers and composer John mazar I,
- 1:00Speaker 1: recorded in twos and eight and found on the Arrow
- 1:02Speaker 1: Blu Ray and Screen Factory four K releases. We'll be
- 1:05Speaker 1: talking about fan memories from our followers, our personal love
- 1:08Speaker 1: for the movie as we dive into the deep, deep
- 1:12Speaker 1: fun world of Killer Clowns. My name is Chris Higgins,
- 1:15Speaker 1: and I'll be your server on this trip. The Big
- 1:17Speaker 1: top burger. The lines are long, the beef is fresh,
- 1:20Speaker 1: but all meals are on the house, courtesy of Jumbo
- 1:23Speaker 1: and Shorty Strap in Welcome to Beyond the Blood Podcast.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Maybe they're just cruising through the galaxy and stopped here.
- 1:51Speaker 3: You need a police, you need a psychiatrist. They want
- 2:05Speaker 3: to play games. They're messing with the wrong guy.
- 2:10Speaker 4: What are you win for? Killer clowns from outer space?
- 2:14Speaker 5: It's crazy our gentle film, you know, and like I
- 2:21Speaker 5: tend to like those kinds of slasher, those kinds of
- 2:25Speaker 5: giallos more.
- 2:26Speaker 2: If that makes sense.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Yeah, no it does. And that's Umberto. That's Umberto Lindsay, right,
- 2:31Speaker 1: I think that one.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, it is right.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Yeah. So let me ask you guys a question. You
- 2:36Speaker 1: you walk into a burger spot, right, and I don't
- 2:38Speaker 1: know if anybody's vegetarian or anything like that. What's your ideal?
- 2:42Speaker 1: Your ideal burger? Whoever wants ago?
- 2:46Speaker 2: It's a great question.
- 2:48Speaker 4: I'll go first, Yeah, go ahead, go ahead, all right.
- 2:52Speaker 5: So here I'm I'm in the burger spot. I'm going
- 2:55Speaker 5: do we have a choice on bun here?
- 2:56Speaker 2: Like whatever you want? Man, Okay, all right.
- 3:01Speaker 5: I'm going medium, rare, patty okay, okay, bacon, onion rings,
- 3:10Speaker 5: barbecue sauce, that's it.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Maybe avocado.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Damn.
- 3:17Speaker 5: Yeah, that's my style, man. That like Western style, that
- 3:20Speaker 5: Western barbecue. Oh yeah, that's how I roll them in.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, Chuck, what about you?
- 3:25Speaker 4: I was basically going to say the same thing. I
- 3:27Speaker 4: really like getting those the burgers with the onion rings
- 3:30Speaker 4: on top of the barbecue sauce and all that. Maybe
- 3:32Speaker 4: a little couple of halapanios on there. Okay, the heat
- 3:36Speaker 4: a little bit.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Man. You guys are like I'm I'm like a straight
- 3:40Speaker 1: give me a good breush bun. Okay, medium, rare like
- 3:45Speaker 1: Angus beef blend, patty, uh, cheese, probably chottar cheese, pickle, lettuce, simple, very.
- 3:55Speaker 2: That's not my style.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Damn.
- 3:57Speaker 5: I expect it, man, I really do. It's just not
- 3:59Speaker 5: You're like the all the Maria styles and you know,
- 4:01Speaker 5: I don't know. I tend to go towards the Western
- 4:03Speaker 5: that like Mesquite barbecue. I don't know what it is.
- 4:05Speaker 2: It's my style.
- 4:06Speaker 1: When I go to if, like my wife and I
- 4:09Speaker 1: go to a burger place for the first time, I
- 4:11Speaker 1: always order as plane and cheeseburger as I can because
- 4:13Speaker 1: in my opinion, if you messed that up, I'm not
- 4:14Speaker 1: going to trust you with anything else on your menu.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Dude, that's fair.
- 4:17Speaker 1: I don't care what you're known for, right, you can't
- 4:20Speaker 1: mess that up, so I will.
- 4:22Speaker 5: I will say, like a lot of places, like their
- 4:25Speaker 5: defunct Default Burger is kind of like your style. It's
- 4:28Speaker 5: like that all American, you know, Like, so you got
- 4:31Speaker 5: that going for you.
- 4:32Speaker 1: I did have a glazed doughnut burger once and that
- 4:35Speaker 1: wasn't good. Just glazed doughnut was the bun?
- 4:40Speaker 4: Yeah, scared to try them?
- 4:43Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 4:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:43Speaker 1: It was like I was in Philly and I was like, oh,
- 4:45Speaker 1: this seems like a Philly thing to do.
- 4:48Speaker 2: What what was it?
- 4:50Speaker 5: I mean cause I'm thinking donut and burger like that's
- 4:52Speaker 5: that's you know.
- 4:53Speaker 1: It was like, I mean literally just take a glazed
- 4:55Speaker 1: donut and put it on top of a traditional So.
- 4:58Speaker 2: What was it?
- 4:58Speaker 4: Was?
- 4:59Speaker 5: It?
- 4:59Speaker 4: Like?
- 4:59Speaker 2: Just the sweetness wasn't good with the burger, Like.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like competing, you know what I mean. It's
- 5:04Speaker 1: like yeah, and you can't hold it either, It's it's slippery.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Ah okay, and then eventually like they served it to
- 5:11Speaker 1: you in a in like a bowl, so because they
- 5:14Speaker 1: knew it was gonna fall apart eventually because there was
- 5:16Speaker 1: just no stability to it. Yeah, and at that point,
- 5:18Speaker 1: I'm done, you know what I mean, Like, I'm.
- 5:20Speaker 5: Like mentally snapshotting all this in the event that i'd
- 5:23Speaker 5: ever come across one, and like, I really am gonna
- 5:25Speaker 5: want it. But I'm hearing your thoughts in my head.
- 5:27Speaker 5: It's like, don't do it, don't do it.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Well, good News is a big top burger. I don't
- 5:32Speaker 1: know if they sell glazed doughnut burgers. But Robbie, thank
- 5:37Speaker 1: you so much for coming on. Man, greatly appreciate you
- 5:39Speaker 1: having a guest. You jumped on the opportunity to come
- 5:42Speaker 1: on and talk killer clowns really really quickly. So what
- 5:46Speaker 1: is it about this movie that made you be like, yeah,
- 5:48Speaker 1: I gotta go hang out with these guys and bullshit
- 5:50Speaker 1: about this one. Yeah.
- 5:51Speaker 5: I mean again, thank you guys for having me on.
- 5:54Speaker 5: I mean, you guys are awesome, dudes. Appreciate the hangout.
- 5:57Speaker 5: Sash talking clowns. It's It's always been one of my
- 6:01Speaker 5: favorite movies since I was a kid. You know, I'm
- 6:03Speaker 5: big into children's horror and you know kind of uh,
- 6:06Speaker 5: the movies that really sparked my love of horror as
- 6:08Speaker 5: a kid. And Killer Clowns is like at the top
- 6:10Speaker 5: of that list. I wash it.
- 6:12Speaker 2: You know.
- 6:12Speaker 5: When I was young, we had the VHS in my
- 6:14Speaker 5: house and you know, I washed it. And for whatever reason,
- 6:20Speaker 5: that transformative horror of you know, the clowns turning turning
- 6:24Speaker 5: the citizens into the cocoons and the cotton candy cocoons
- 6:29Speaker 5: and whatever it is, it just it just, you know,
- 6:31Speaker 5: really stuck with me. And my me and my sister
- 6:33Speaker 5: were terrified of this movie as kids, like terrified, but
- 6:36Speaker 5: we couldn't stop watching it. And so you know, it
- 6:40Speaker 5: was just one of those movies that as a kid,
- 6:42Speaker 5: it just it drew me in with its whackingness and
- 6:45Speaker 5: its zaniness and it's just been one of my favorites
- 6:49Speaker 5: ever since. You know, my dad was big into horror.
- 6:52Speaker 5: My dad was a big fold chie fan, big argentle fan.
- 6:54Speaker 5: We had a Don of the Dead one sheet up
- 6:56Speaker 5: in our in our house growing up, and you know,
- 7:00Speaker 5: he he just introduced me to all these movies like
- 7:02Speaker 5: Killer Clowns and Evil Dead and Suspiria. You know, like
- 7:07Speaker 5: I watched these all these movies as a kid and
- 7:10Speaker 5: the type of horror that that Clowns is it just
- 7:13Speaker 5: it just drew me in and it just stuck with me.
- 7:15Speaker 2: You know, dude.
- 7:16Speaker 1: That is you grew up with a Don the Dead
- 7:18Speaker 1: one sheet on the wall.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Yeah, that I still have to this day.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Damn dud, that is that is awesome.
- 7:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:27Speaker 5: My dad was the kind of He was a writer also,
- 7:29Speaker 5: you know, I write middle grade horror fiction, and he
- 7:32Speaker 5: was the kind of he was. He wrote comic books
- 7:33Speaker 5: and he worked at Blockbuster growing up, you know, when
- 7:37Speaker 5: I was growing up, and uh, you know, he he
- 7:39Speaker 5: took me to Fangoria convention when I was young, so, like,
- 7:42Speaker 5: you know, the horror was there from a young age,
- 7:44Speaker 5: you know what I mean.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Yeah, So you know.
- 7:47Speaker 5: Again like Clowns was just one of those movies that
- 7:50Speaker 5: just I saw it as a kid and it just
- 7:52Speaker 5: stuck with me. Like I just absolutely adore it, and
- 7:55Speaker 5: it that transformative horror is really really what I love
- 7:59Speaker 5: my big body, you know.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, no, dude, I mean we will go over
- 8:05Speaker 1: them in a little bit. But I asked my followers
- 8:07Speaker 1: on Instagram to send me some like stories that they
- 8:10Speaker 1: have about Killer Clowns am Otter Space, and there seems
- 8:13Speaker 1: to be a pretty consistent theme to it, which is
- 8:17Speaker 1: it was it was at a transformative moment in their
- 8:19Speaker 1: life where I feel like Killer Clowns is a great
- 8:22Speaker 1: introduction into horror. It's not too scary, you know what
- 8:26Speaker 1: I mean, it's silly, it's not over the violent. You
- 8:29Speaker 1: don't have any nudity, like there's a there's a lot
- 8:31Speaker 1: of appropriateness. But it's a good gateway.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Yeah, oh yeah.
- 8:36Speaker 1: But I do feel like we come from a generation
- 8:39Speaker 1: of people who discovering these movies on VHS or even
- 8:44Speaker 1: late night TV was a different experience than people are
- 8:48Speaker 1: discovering them now in HD and in four K and
- 8:51Speaker 1: all that other cool stuff.
- 8:52Speaker 5: It's a really great point, Like you know, again, it's
- 8:56Speaker 5: like watching it as a kid late night VHS tape.
- 9:00Speaker 5: You know, the vibe was just different. Like you can
- 9:02Speaker 5: throw on the four K right now and it's amazing,
- 9:04Speaker 5: and it looks gorgeous from whoever you had. You know,
- 9:06Speaker 5: you have the even the blu ray looks amazing, The
- 9:08Speaker 5: arrow blue ray looks fantastic. But what you know, you
- 9:11Speaker 5: can watch it in high definition and it's a great movie.
- 9:13Speaker 5: But it's one of those it's one of those movies
- 9:16Speaker 5: that like it just hits differently, you know, it hits
- 9:18Speaker 5: differently when you're a kid growing up and you watch
- 9:20Speaker 5: it on the with the grain on a you know,
- 9:22Speaker 5: on a VHS tape, and it's just it's just one
- 9:25Speaker 5: of those movies.
- 9:25Speaker 3: Man.
- 9:26Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's funny because it makes me think of
- 9:28Speaker 1: I just finished reading the newest issue of Fangoria and
- 9:31Speaker 1: the newest issue of Room Morgue, and in that they
- 9:34Speaker 1: had spotlight articles on nos Faratu, and Robert Eggers talked
- 9:37Speaker 1: about how watching the original nineteen twenty two No Sparatu
- 9:42Speaker 1: on VHS or on TV, those early early copies were
- 9:46Speaker 1: different because it felt so real, and I think he
- 9:48Speaker 1: had actually watched it on a rip, so it was
- 9:50Speaker 1: even even more degradation to it than than what would normally.
- 9:55Speaker 1: And he talked about how, like, you know, this is
- 9:56Speaker 1: before the days where you could see the lining on
- 9:58Speaker 1: the makeup, so it felt so much more real. And
- 10:02Speaker 1: that's something that I do want to get into later.
- 10:05Speaker 1: But Chuck, what about you, man, what's your history with
- 10:07Speaker 1: this movie?
- 10:08Speaker 4: Yeah, so I didn't hear about this movie, and so
- 10:10Speaker 4: like maybe twenty twelve, twenty thirteen was when I was
- 10:13Speaker 4: first introduced to it, And yeah, I wasn't really a
- 10:17Speaker 4: big fan of it at first, but just because I
- 10:20Speaker 4: didn't really understand what they were going for. But obviously
- 10:23Speaker 4: I grew to appreciate it. I picked the movie because
- 10:24Speaker 4: I wanted to talk about it, you know, so I
- 10:27Speaker 4: grew to love it. I watch it multiple times a
- 10:29Speaker 4: year now. It's fantastic. It's so good, dude.
- 10:33Speaker 1: It's funny that we're covering this on the show because
- 10:35Speaker 1: this was your your pick for this season. But like you,
- 10:39Speaker 1: I discovered this movie late. Like I didn't grow up
- 10:41Speaker 1: with this one. Shockingly enough, I grew up with my
- 10:46Speaker 1: mom who was more like it was The Extorcist, the Omen,
- 10:50Speaker 1: the Original Friday at thirteenth. My mom wasn't really into
- 10:54Speaker 1: kind of the sillier like side of things, you know,
- 10:58Speaker 1: and killer clowns. One thing that we talk about in
- 11:01Speaker 1: the intro is how this is sort of like the
- 11:02Speaker 1: bona fide cult classic. Now you know what I mean.
- 11:05Speaker 1: You can't go into a spirit Halloween without seeing killer
- 11:08Speaker 1: clowns on every piece of it.
- 11:09Speaker 2: Is that amazing? Isn't that unbelievable?
- 11:12Speaker 1: Crazy dude?
- 11:13Speaker 2: It makes me so happy, Like I can't even tell you.
- 11:16Speaker 1: It's insane. I want to know. I would love to
- 11:18Speaker 1: put it out there. If there's a piece of merchandise
- 11:20Speaker 1: that anybody knows that there is not killer clowns printed on,
- 11:22Speaker 1: I want to know what it is, because like I've
- 11:25Speaker 1: seen underwear, I have killer clowns socks. There has to
- 11:29Speaker 1: be pretty much everything with killer clowns on it.
- 11:31Speaker 5: I'm sure, yeah, yeah, yeah, But it's funny, you know.
- 11:34Speaker 5: I know, I'm a seventh grade teacher and I mentioned
- 11:37Speaker 5: you know before that you know, kids are walking around
- 11:39Speaker 5: with terrifier shirts and all that good stuff, but the
- 11:42Speaker 5: clowns is big also, man, Like, kids are rocking the clowns.
- 11:45Speaker 5: I have a student this year, and I actually met
- 11:48Speaker 5: her last year when she was a sixth grader and
- 11:49Speaker 5: she was just walking the halls in sixth grade and
- 11:52Speaker 5: I didn't know who she was, but she was rocking
- 11:53Speaker 5: a clown shirt. And I have my jumbo tattoo on
- 11:56Speaker 5: my arm and I'm like and I'm like, I'm like hey,
- 11:58Speaker 5: and she's like this little six or walking by and
- 12:01Speaker 5: she's like, okay, whatever, man, and uh, but you know,
- 12:04Speaker 5: it was cool. It's cool, like there are kids that
- 12:06Speaker 5: that are vibe with it and are into it and
- 12:09Speaker 5: it's cool.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Man.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Yeah, so out of curiosity, I don't know. I don't
- 12:13Speaker 1: have any kids, Chuck, I know you don't. Do you
- 12:15Speaker 1: have kids?
- 12:15Speaker 2: Robably I do not. I do not. Okay, so as
- 12:18Speaker 2: no kids yet, no kids yet?
- 12:19Speaker 1: As childless adults, what age would you show killer clowns
- 12:23Speaker 1: of your kid?
- 12:25Speaker 5: Do you think it's funny? Because you know it's a
- 12:28Speaker 5: great question. And I watch it young, you know, I
- 12:31Speaker 5: watch it very young, and whether right or wrong, I
- 12:34Speaker 5: loved every second of it.
- 12:35Speaker 2: You know, I would say maybe ten, is that crazy?
- 12:44Speaker 1: No, I was taking like eight eight to ten.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, definitely right.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Yeah, it's not that. I mean I like to think
- 12:51Speaker 1: of how demented my taste in movies are, and how like,
- 12:57Speaker 1: at first thought, I think that's a bad thing that
- 12:59Speaker 1: I watched what I did at age I did. Now
- 13:02Speaker 1: now I'm like, it was a great thing. I wouldn't
- 13:04Speaker 1: be doing this if I didn't have that experience. So
- 13:07Speaker 1: so like Chuck, and I obviously saw this movie really late,
- 13:12Speaker 1: so we don't have that lifelong connection with it that
- 13:15Speaker 1: a lot of people do. For me, I had seen
- 13:20Speaker 1: it because there was a there was a whole bunch
- 13:21Speaker 1: of movies. I remember when I was I don't know,
- 13:25Speaker 1: I'm in my thirties now, so it was when I
- 13:27Speaker 1: was in like my mid twenties, I was like, these
- 13:29Speaker 1: are the horror movies I have to watch to like
- 13:32Speaker 1: consider myself a horror fan, right and at that time
- 13:36Speaker 1: still today, I try to approach things from like an
- 13:38Speaker 1: academic standpoint, which is very like I want to learn
- 13:41Speaker 1: and I want to kind of like dig deep and
- 13:43Speaker 1: do research and do all that stuff.
- 13:44Speaker 2: But I love that about you and your channel. Man.
- 13:46Speaker 5: I just have to say, like I love how how
- 13:48Speaker 5: how you deep dive I left, how passion you are
- 13:50Speaker 5: and like you you are so sorry to interrupt you,
- 13:53Speaker 5: but like you're so passionate about the extras and like
- 13:56Speaker 5: learning about the the directors and you know, even like
- 13:58Speaker 5: the special facts, and it just it's just it's awesome
- 14:01Speaker 5: to see you.
- 14:02Speaker 1: No, dude, thank you. Man. That's the stuff that I love.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Like I'm I'm a sucker for information, like I want
- 14:08Speaker 1: to learn, and I feel like wanting to learn makes
- 14:13Speaker 1: viewing experiences and watching movies better. And I get that
- 14:16Speaker 1: not everybody wants to do that, not everybody's into it
- 14:18Speaker 1: to that level, but I feel like there's a lot
- 14:21Speaker 1: of people who pick up movies and then they don't.
- 14:23Speaker 1: They watch the movie, the movie's done, they hit stop,
- 14:26Speaker 1: they eject it, it goes on the shelf, it dies
- 14:29Speaker 1: until the next time they pick it up. I want
- 14:31Speaker 1: to do That's why this show is a commentary show, right,
- 14:34Speaker 1: Like that's why we do what we do because nobody, dude.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Like I remember months before, like talking about this with Chuck.
- 14:42Speaker 1: I put out a thing and I was like, who
- 14:43Speaker 1: watches audio commentaries? And I think I had the two
- 14:45Speaker 1: hundred responses and like eleven people were like, yeah I do.
- 14:49Speaker 1: I'm like, damn, dude, nobody likes this. Like it's interesting, Yeah,
- 14:53Speaker 1: it's weird.
- 14:54Speaker 2: I it's you know, it's funny.
- 14:55Speaker 5: I I'm both ways, Like I I absolutely love of
- 15:00Speaker 5: a good set of extras, like I listen, like that's
- 15:05Speaker 5: that's why I'm so passionate about these movies, right, Like
- 15:07Speaker 5: I love to learn about them, but I also there's
- 15:09Speaker 5: something also nice to me about like and again this
- 15:11Speaker 5: back to the VHS thing, right, like finding a deep cut,
- 15:14Speaker 5: finding a movie that I know nothing about and just
- 15:16Speaker 5: watching and like I don't know anything else other than
- 15:18Speaker 5: just just the movie. You know and like I for me,
- 15:22Speaker 5: it's like both sides, Like like the Blair Witch set right,
- 15:24Speaker 5: Like that was unbelievable, Like learning that that two and
- 15:26Speaker 5: a half hour documentary was everything you could possibly ever
- 15:30Speaker 5: want in a release, and learning so much about the
- 15:33Speaker 5: movie and all that good stuff, and it's we're in
- 15:37Speaker 5: truly a golden age of physical media, right, Like it's unbelievable.
- 15:40Speaker 5: But at the same time, for me, it's like I
- 15:42Speaker 5: love that, But sometimes I just want to pop the
- 15:44Speaker 5: tape in and like watch watch a movie and like
- 15:46Speaker 5: enjoy the shit out of it and like just be
- 15:48Speaker 5: done with it, you know.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Oh dude, Yeah, I mean there's times there's times where
- 15:52Speaker 1: I'll watch things and then I don't watch bonus features.
- 15:54Speaker 1: I end up making my way back to them. Ye yeah,
- 15:57Speaker 1: some way, somehow. My thing is like I feel like
- 16:00Speaker 1: sometimes and I get it's different, but they're like the
- 16:04Speaker 1: amount of effort that goes into bonus features and into
- 16:07Speaker 1: the extras, the booklets, the essays like.
- 16:11Speaker 2: To you know what I mean.
- 16:14Speaker 1: I follow so many people who write the essays for releases,
- 16:16Speaker 1: and the amount of work they put in is incredible,
- 16:18Speaker 1: and some of them are really some of them are fantastic.
- 16:22Speaker 1: I would argue most of them are fantastic. Some are not,
- 16:24Speaker 1: Like the visual essay on Deep Lucy, that's a mess.
- 16:29Speaker 1: I don't know who thought that was a good idea.
- 16:31Speaker 5: Yeah, no, I'm with you, dude. The extras are amazing,
- 16:33Speaker 5: and like it really is. It's it's a it's a
- 16:37Speaker 5: really you know, cool thing to be able to learn
- 16:40Speaker 5: more about these films and understand them in different light, right,
- 16:44Speaker 5: because you watch them and you enjoy them, and then
- 16:46Speaker 5: when you learn more about it and behind the scenes,
- 16:48Speaker 5: it makes you enjoy it so much more. Right, Or
- 16:50Speaker 5: you read the book that you read some of these
- 16:51Speaker 5: essays and you learn some things and it gives you
- 16:53Speaker 5: such a different appreciation for what these people created, right,
- 16:57Speaker 5: It's not they wasn't you know. You think of it
- 16:59Speaker 5: as a movie. It's nine minutes and you sit there
- 17:00Speaker 5: and then ends. But there's so much that's in that, right,
- 17:04Speaker 5: There's so much that goes into that and the process seson,
- 17:06Speaker 5: the creative behind it, right, And like, I think that's
- 17:09Speaker 5: what's so fascinating. And you know, one of the reasons
- 17:11Speaker 5: why it's so cool that you deep dive into this,
- 17:13Speaker 5: you know.
- 17:14Speaker 1: Yeah, dude, Well, thank you. First of all, I was
- 17:17Speaker 1: not expecting to, uh, to get that kind.
- 17:20Speaker 5: Of hey, you guys, you guys are done it. Man,
- 17:22Speaker 5: you guys, you guys are cussing it.
- 17:25Speaker 1: But yeah, I had this. I had this list of
- 17:27Speaker 1: movies that I was like, Okay, I gotta watch these.
- 17:29Speaker 1: This was on it. I watched it. I was like, dude,
- 17:33Speaker 1: a ton of fun with it. I get it. This
- 17:35Speaker 1: was really cool. The more I learned about the Kyoto Brothers,
- 17:38Speaker 1: what what, the more I appreciated this because I had
- 17:41Speaker 1: watched Critters gotten the Critters too. When I met my
- 17:46Speaker 1: now wife, she loved killer Clowns from outter Space, so
- 17:49Speaker 1: it became a little bit more prevalent in my life.
- 17:51Speaker 1: It was around more and that's when I really started
- 17:54Speaker 1: to love it. And on this rewatch I throw on
- 17:57Speaker 1: the blue ray and I just like had had so
- 18:01Speaker 1: much fun with it, Like there was no We were
- 18:04Speaker 1: actually just talking about it before before you hopped on.
- 18:07Speaker 1: In the pre show, we were talking about how like
- 18:09Speaker 1: going from House of a Thousand Corpses, which was littered
- 18:12Speaker 1: with drama, controversy, directors cuts, all this up to this
- 18:17Speaker 1: movie where they're this movie kind of worked out perfectly,
- 18:20Speaker 1: almost you know what I mean.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 18:23Speaker 5: And also you know, I don't I know I mentioned
- 18:24Speaker 5: that before, but like hearing you guys talk about House
- 18:27Speaker 5: one thousand, man, like I learned so much from that
- 18:29Speaker 5: from that episode, Like, so it's really cool. Then, I
- 18:31Speaker 5: only are you guys putting in the work and watching
- 18:33Speaker 5: and learning, but like you're sharing the information with oz Man,
- 18:35Speaker 5: Like I enjoyed that episode so much.
- 18:38Speaker 1: Dude, thank you. That's all Chuck's work, bro put together
- 18:41Speaker 1: all those commentary Dude, researching for that movie was like
- 18:44Speaker 1: researching for the college paper. There was so much information.
- 18:49Speaker 5: Also, every every time you guys spoke about baby masturbating
- 18:53Speaker 5: with the skeleton, I was dying.
- 18:54Speaker 2: I was I was laughing so hard, Like you guys
- 18:56Speaker 2: get it. These guys are having a good time.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Oh dude, well dude, it's so cool man. Because going
- 19:01Speaker 1: into this episode, you know, obviously we have our commentary notes.
- 19:04Speaker 1: But I posted on Instagram, I was like, hey, you know,
- 19:07Speaker 1: my followers like share some stories about killer clowns. So
- 19:10Speaker 1: we had some of my followers type in some or
- 19:13Speaker 1: reply to me with some stories about killer cons that
- 19:16Speaker 1: I want to cover real quick because there's a common theme.
- 19:19Speaker 1: But there's also some funny stuff here, so let's see
- 19:22Speaker 1: what I have here. So Ja Designs nine to one
- 19:26Speaker 1: replied to the story and said, this is great. The
- 19:29Speaker 1: first time I watched it, I thought it was the
- 19:31Speaker 1: dumbest movie ever. The second time I watched it, it
- 19:35Speaker 1: was the funniest thing ever.
- 19:36Speaker 2: There it is, So I don't know.
- 19:38Speaker 1: I still don't know if that means like he's a
- 19:40Speaker 1: fan or if you know, like I don't know. G
- 19:46Speaker 1: x vault replied and said, love that movie. Kill a
- 19:49Speaker 1: theme song too, do the Dickies?
- 19:50Speaker 2: Yeah, hell yeah, yeah.
- 19:53Speaker 1: He said. When I was a kid, I saw this
- 19:55Speaker 1: so many times a VHS of the movie. There's a
- 19:57Speaker 1: common theme. I feel like that's you know for sure?
- 20:00Speaker 2: Yeah yeah.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Plutonium Sure shared a story with me, and I'm going
- 20:04Speaker 1: to read this, he said. This guy set the scene,
- 20:08Speaker 1: so he said. Christmas nineteen ninety five, when I was
- 20:11Speaker 1: in fourth or fifth grade, my parents bought me a
- 20:13Speaker 1: thirteen inch tube television from my bedroom. I immediately started
- 20:16Speaker 1: staying up way later than I was allowed watching that TV.
- 20:19Speaker 1: As long as I can manager to stay awake, I
- 20:21Speaker 1: would keep the volume as low as possible while still
- 20:23Speaker 1: being able to hear the dialogue, and I would have
- 20:24Speaker 1: my thumb hovering over the power button the entire time,
- 20:27Speaker 1: ready to turn the TV off the second I heard
- 20:28Speaker 1: my parents' bedroom door open across the hall from mine.
- 20:31Speaker 1: I just want to say, it's so crazy that myself
- 20:35Speaker 1: and so many people, you guys, will have that same
- 20:37Speaker 1: exact experience. I love that so much, the finger hovering
- 20:41Speaker 1: over the power but yeah, like sweaty palm from holding
- 20:45Speaker 1: I was more than.
- 20:45Speaker 2: Eighty six man like I. I grew up like the
- 20:50Speaker 2: cable all that.
- 20:51Speaker 1: Yup yup, so he said. I got hooked on trying
- 20:54Speaker 1: to find horror moves that I hadn't seen, getting totally
- 20:56Speaker 1: creeped out by the fact that it was a dead
- 20:57Speaker 1: at night and everyone else was asleep in the house.
- 21:01Speaker 1: The adrenaline of knowing I can get in trouble at
- 21:03Speaker 1: any second added something to the experience as well. I
- 21:05Speaker 1: think the two most special to me that he discovered
- 21:08Speaker 1: was the original invasion of the body snatchers and killer clowns.
- 21:12Speaker 5: And it's so funny, like, like I think that it
- 21:16Speaker 5: like is important to think about with clowns, It's like
- 21:19Speaker 5: it is sort of like a forbidden fruit to a kid,
- 21:22Speaker 5: right like it's it's a forbidden fruit, like it's a
- 21:23Speaker 5: horror movie you shouldn't be watching. But at the same time,
- 21:26Speaker 5: it's like a fun movie. It's like I kind of
- 21:28Speaker 5: can be watching this because it's zany and fun and
- 21:30Speaker 5: you know what I mean?
- 21:31Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I absolutely do. I don't I know, like
- 21:36Speaker 1: things feel. Obviously, your interpretation of a movie when you're
- 21:40Speaker 1: you know, ten years old is different than when you're
- 21:43Speaker 1: thirty and you know things about movies. But like if
- 21:46Speaker 1: Killer Clowns came on when I was a kid, I
- 21:49Speaker 1: would feel like I was watching like that this hidden secret.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Yeah, you know what I mean, that's like forbidden It's like, oh,
- 21:57Speaker 2: I should.
- 21:57Speaker 1: Turn this off right now. You know you don't know. Oh,
- 22:00Speaker 1: you don't know the difference between this and one hundred tears,
- 22:04Speaker 1: you know what I mean?
- 22:04Speaker 2: Like, yesh, Yeahson's Sake.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Like you don't know so, but this one's cool. I
- 22:10Speaker 1: know you're gonna listen to the show, and I know
- 22:12Speaker 1: you're gonna get on me by your name. But I
- 22:14Speaker 1: think his name is Jotson, he said. First time we
- 22:16Speaker 1: watched it was nineteen ninety seven, but his childhood best friend,
- 22:19Speaker 1: he came from a Jehovah's witness household, and his mom
- 22:23Speaker 1: was pretty devout. He was trying to show me something
- 22:26Speaker 1: in his parents Uh wait, this story's wild, bro. He said,
- 22:30Speaker 1: he was trying to show me something in his parents closet. Immediately,
- 22:33Speaker 1: I thought, oh, he thought he was gonna show him
- 22:35Speaker 1: a playboy, But it was Tupac's album All Lies on Me.
- 22:38Speaker 1: And inside the box that he pulled that album out
- 22:40Speaker 1: of was a copy of Killer Clows from Matter Space Sick.
- 22:44Speaker 1: So let's say, uh, popped in Killer Clowns wasn't the
- 22:48Speaker 1: greatest experience because they were listening to Tupac over the movie.
- 22:52Speaker 2: That's a combo right there, he said.
- 22:55Speaker 1: We couldn't hear, but it felt awesome because it felt
- 22:57Speaker 1: so wrong. Look again, there's that forbidden.
- 22:59Speaker 2: Through the commo.
- 23:01Speaker 5: We never knew we needed was Tupac and Clowns Clowns
- 23:04Speaker 5: Matter Space.
- 23:05Speaker 1: We should do that as like an intra.
- 23:06Speaker 5: Yeah, upload the movie, which we got to bring him
- 23:08Speaker 5: on board though over we gotta get him back and back,
- 23:10Speaker 5: we gotta get him back for it.
- 23:12Speaker 1: But listen to this man. So he added at the
- 23:14Speaker 1: bottom that another memorable time is that he watched it
- 23:16Speaker 1: with his daughter in twenty twenty three when she turned ten.
- 23:19Speaker 2: Wow she it.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Yeah, she fell in love with it and dressed up
- 23:23Speaker 1: as Shorty that Halloween. Now it's a yearly watch for them.
- 23:26Speaker 2: Love it. I love that.
- 23:28Speaker 1: That's incredible, dude. Okay, so let's officially go with ten. Yeah.
- 23:33Speaker 2: Did they watch it with Tupac or was it just
- 23:35Speaker 2: like a straight watch?
- 23:36Speaker 1: No? I think they. I mean, I think the Tupac
- 23:38Speaker 1: album is more inappropriate than Killer Clowns.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Right, you're right? Yeah, yeah, I don't know if at.
- 23:43Speaker 1: Ten years old, I'm gonna play All Eyes on me,
- 23:44Speaker 1: but I'll definitely throw one Killer Clowns matter space.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Yeah, you know what I mean, definitely, man.
- 23:49Speaker 1: But again, like the reason I wanted to go over
- 23:51Speaker 1: those was because of the consistency, you know what I mean. Yeah,
- 23:55Speaker 1: it's amazing that we all share these same weird experiences.
- 23:58Speaker 1: You know, I grew up with that movie. I had
- 24:00Speaker 1: those same experiences of That's actually how I found Faces
- 24:04Speaker 1: of Death. My best friend, his dad had a whole
- 24:08Speaker 1: bunch of VHS movies in a and like a bure,
- 24:11Speaker 1: and we would go in and and he had a
- 24:12Speaker 1: bunch of horror movies and we would go in and
- 24:14Speaker 1: take them all the time, and one of them was
- 24:15Speaker 1: faces of Death. We would sneak in, take that tape,
- 24:18Speaker 1: you know, run to my house and throw that on
- 24:21Speaker 1: because you know, that felt like now you can buy
- 24:23Speaker 1: that that a Walmart, you know.
- 24:24Speaker 5: Which, yeah, apparently I don't know what the deals with that,
- 24:26Speaker 5: but like everyone's everyone's you know, popping off and showing
- 24:29Speaker 5: these faces of death of Walmart and I awesome.
- 24:31Speaker 4: Yeah, and now there's I was shocked when I saw that.
- 24:33Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, wild man, wild but yeah, just
- 24:37Speaker 1: those shared experiences, man, it's an incredible thing and especially
- 24:40Speaker 1: cool to be in this community to have that.
- 24:41Speaker 2: Shared totally totally.
- 24:44Speaker 1: Let's dive into the key players here, which is a
- 24:47Speaker 1: relatively short section because most of this movie is involving
- 24:55Speaker 1: three brothers and those are the Kyoto brothers. So the
- 24:58Speaker 1: direction was actually given to Stephen Kyoto. He had directed
- 25:03Speaker 1: a whole bunch of short films, some TV work. This
- 25:05Speaker 1: is the biggest thing in his directing filmography. The writing
- 25:10Speaker 1: of the movie goes to all three of them. So Charles,
- 25:13Speaker 1: Stephen n Edward Kyoto brothers who grew up in New
- 25:16Speaker 1: York cinematography. We have done here by Alfred Taylor. He
- 25:22Speaker 1: had been working in photography since early sixties, shooting all
- 25:25Speaker 1: kinds of movies. Most noticeably that I picked out was
- 25:29Speaker 1: Mutant from nineteen eighty four, and then he actually shot
- 25:31Speaker 1: also in nineteen eighty four Fatal Games, which Vinegar Syndrome
- 25:34Speaker 1: just put out. Yeah, yeah, yeah, not too long ago,
- 25:36Speaker 1: so we also shot that movie as well. I think
- 25:39Speaker 1: my favorite credit in this movie is the composer John Mazari,
- 25:45Speaker 1: who has composed over a one hundred and sixty pieces
- 25:48Speaker 1: of media. Wow, from television to video games. This guy's
- 25:53Speaker 1: work is extensive.
- 25:55Speaker 5: I actually I have the Clown soundtrack signed by him,
- 25:59Speaker 5: I like on a CD.
- 26:02Speaker 1: Damn. I have the Waxwork Records. Oh yeah, like vinyl
- 26:06Speaker 1: they put out. What do you guys think? So, uh,
- 26:10Speaker 1: you know, outside of the Dickey's main soundtrack, what do
- 26:13Speaker 1: you guys think of the music for this movie? Because
- 26:16Speaker 1: I think it's fantastic. Dude, the scene when the clowns
- 26:19Speaker 1: are walking into town and you have that shot on the.
- 26:22Speaker 2: Road clown march baby dude, so good man, that could
- 26:27Speaker 2: be my favorite shot of the movie.
- 26:28Speaker 5: Also, you know, they they mentioned the commentary some funny
- 26:32Speaker 5: things that yeah, they couldn't. They couldn't that you if
- 26:35Speaker 5: you notice, you don't see any of the clown's shoes,
- 26:38Speaker 5: and so because when they were filming they I forget
- 26:41Speaker 5: what the reason was, but they had to keep the
- 26:43Speaker 5: camera higher up. Oh I think because they were cripping
- 26:45Speaker 5: over their shoes or something, so they had to keep
- 26:47Speaker 5: keep the camera higher up so that none of their
- 26:49Speaker 5: shoes were in the shot. And they're just marching along
- 26:52Speaker 5: and it's sass before any of their shoes getting the shot.
- 26:55Speaker 5: But that that scene from about when I think right
- 26:57Speaker 5: before maybe Jumbo like sits up and then like pans
- 27:00Speaker 5: out and then they like they're all marching and the
- 27:02Speaker 5: music hits and it's I love it, man, totally, totally, totally, dude.
- 27:07Speaker 1: The score is so zany and what's cool is like
- 27:09Speaker 1: we have it as the first commentary note. But the
- 27:11Speaker 1: Dickey's actually wrote and recorded the theme song before the
- 27:15Speaker 1: movie was even done. So they did it. They wrote
- 27:17Speaker 1: that whole song strictly off of the title.
- 27:20Speaker 4: Just based off the title alone.
- 27:22Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, And how well it fits with this
- 27:25Speaker 1: movie and how well the rest of the music fits
- 27:27Speaker 1: with that theme song. It feels like a fake thing.
- 27:30Speaker 1: It was all meant to be. All his music's great,
- 27:34Speaker 1: there is a record out from Waxwork Records. It's incredible.
- 27:39Speaker 1: And then makeup effects was the only place I really
- 27:41Speaker 1: struggled with because we know the Kyoto brothers and their history.
- 27:45Speaker 1: You know, Critters one and two are the most noticeable
- 27:48Speaker 1: I think for them for their work.
- 27:50Speaker 2: This was a I'm impartial to Ernest, but that's just me.
- 27:55Speaker 2: I'm a big ye and I mean that like with
- 27:59Speaker 2: all my heart, like truly, truly, dude, I love Ernest.
- 28:03Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I used to watch them all the time.
- 28:05Speaker 1: Yeah, dude, he I just saw I'll have to post
- 28:09Speaker 1: it on my Instagram. I just came across like a
- 28:10Speaker 1: clip from an Earnest movie where the truck I forget
- 28:12Speaker 1: which movie it is, but he's working on the truck
- 28:14Speaker 1: in the truck. Uh the uh oh I got the
- 28:17Speaker 1: hood of the truck lands on his hand. Oh yeah,
- 28:20Speaker 1: and he just turns around and stairs at the camera
- 28:22Speaker 1: and it's like, maybe it took me back, man, took
- 28:25Speaker 1: me yea. They don't make movies like that anymore, they don't.
- 28:30Speaker 1: But makeup effects here also too. I will say that
- 28:32Speaker 1: my favorite effect the Kyoto brothers have ever done. Is
- 28:35Speaker 1: the Critters Ball, the Critter Ball and Critters two. Oh yeah,
- 28:38Speaker 1: and when it rolls over the guy and it's just
- 28:40Speaker 1: the skeleton left on the ground, it'screah.
- 28:43Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it's great.
- 28:45Speaker 1: But I was trying to do some research on It's
- 28:49Speaker 1: always tough looking up makeup effects because you have the
- 28:52Speaker 1: head of effects and then you have various ten, twelve, fifteen,
- 28:56Speaker 1: sometimes sixteen people on that team, so you don't really
- 28:59Speaker 1: know who's responsible for what. The credit goes to the
- 29:04Speaker 1: Kyoto brothers, but from what I read, they actually kind
- 29:07Speaker 1: of step back. I know these designs a word directly
- 29:12Speaker 1: from them, because I actually have the art book that
- 29:16Speaker 1: shows the original designs for the Killer Clowns from them,
- 29:20Speaker 1: but I don't know who exactly put in the work here.
- 29:24Speaker 1: So just so everybody's clear. If anybody does know, let
- 29:26Speaker 1: me know. But as of this recording, I'm not one
- 29:29Speaker 1: hundred percent sure. But outside of that, I mean, those
- 29:33Speaker 1: are pretty much, you know, the main people involved. There's
- 29:38Speaker 1: three or four producers who hadn't really done a whole
- 29:40Speaker 1: bunch at the time. This movie went by incredibly smooth,
- 29:46Speaker 1: like there's no director's cuts, there's no extended cuts, no
- 29:50Speaker 1: one rated cuts. There's no real drama. I would say
- 29:55Speaker 1: behind the scenes, everything about this movie is pretty straightforward.
- 30:03Speaker 5: I'm sure we'll get I'm sure we'll get to it.
- 30:04Speaker 5: They did mention that alternate ending at one point, which
- 30:06Speaker 5: I thought was kind of cool.
- 30:08Speaker 4: Yep, I do have that written down.
- 30:09Speaker 1: Yep, Chuck has that. But I mean, especially in comparison
- 30:12Speaker 1: to the House of a Thousand Corpses, we're not dealing
- 30:15Speaker 1: with one hundred and forty minute cuts and nobody's masturbating
- 30:17Speaker 1: with the skeleton hand.
- 30:20Speaker 2: In this at least one mention.
- 30:21Speaker 1: Yeah, we got to get that in somehow, because if
- 30:23Speaker 1: that was there, my kid is going to be a
- 30:24Speaker 1: certified adult with a driver's license by the times watching space.
- 30:31Speaker 1: So diving into the commentary here, I do want to
- 30:36Speaker 1: say that this commentary is fantastic. Like the Kyoto brothers,
- 30:41Speaker 1: you hear the passion in every sentence that comes out
- 30:45Speaker 1: of their mouth for this man.
- 30:46Speaker 4: They had a blast talking about this movie, and it
- 30:48Speaker 4: really just drew me and made me appreciate the film
- 30:51Speaker 4: that much more.
- 30:52Speaker 1: Yeah, and it makes me so sad that we don't
- 30:54Speaker 1: have a new commentary from them.
- 30:56Speaker 2: Ye.
- 30:56Speaker 1: Like with the release of the Screen Factory four K,
- 30:59Speaker 1: the multiple four K that they've put out.
- 31:02Speaker 2: It's funny. It's like it's like they're brothers too, Like
- 31:04Speaker 2: you have three How rare is that? Right?
- 31:07Speaker 5: Like you have three brothers on a commentary together, you know,
- 31:09Speaker 5: like that that's such a special thing.
- 31:11Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. And what's really cool is I had a
- 31:14Speaker 1: chance to I met all three of them at Monster Mania.
- 31:17Speaker 1: I was getting something signed from my wife because she
- 31:19Speaker 1: wasn't there. They were so cool, so nice. And then
- 31:22Speaker 1: I actually saw them. It was about a year later
- 31:26Speaker 1: at Mahoning Drive in. They were doing Critter Thon, So
- 31:29Speaker 1: they did Critters one and two original thirty five millimeter prints,
- 31:33Speaker 1: and the Kyodo brothers were there and it was the
- 31:35Speaker 1: first time since those movies had come out that they
- 31:38Speaker 1: had seen them on the original print.
- 31:40Speaker 2: Oh wow.
- 31:41Speaker 1: And they did like a little intro like they were talking,
- 31:44Speaker 1: kind of talking about their experience working on the movie
- 31:46Speaker 1: and stuff, and dude, they're like every time I looked
- 31:49Speaker 1: over at the booth where people were meeting them, they
- 31:51Speaker 1: just had these big smiles on their face. Nobody had
- 31:54Speaker 1: a negative thing to say. You couldn't even make one up.
- 31:57Speaker 2: Yeah, they're cool dudes.
- 31:58Speaker 5: Man, I mentioned before that you know, I have a
- 32:01Speaker 5: I have a scary closet slappy prop and it's you know,
- 32:05Speaker 5: it's it's movie quality, it's higher end and you know,
- 32:07Speaker 5: you it looks exactly like like the show prop. And
- 32:11Speaker 5: it was painted up by Charlie Kyoto and he did
- 32:13Speaker 5: the head and you know, he did a phenomenal job.
- 32:15Speaker 5: But when I when I picked it up, you know,
- 32:18Speaker 5: he signed the back and everything. So it's actually signed
- 32:20Speaker 5: by Charlie Kyoto and he did a shout out video
- 32:23Speaker 5: for me, and that that's how when I got the
- 32:25Speaker 5: h the Jama Sari signed soundtrack also, and he threw
- 32:28Speaker 5: in a few extras. I guess, uh, oh, I have
- 32:30Speaker 5: it right here. Actually this is my uh I thought
- 32:32Speaker 5: I bought out some way. It's a Charlie Kyoto signed
- 32:35Speaker 5: clown Zilla original print.
- 32:37Speaker 1: Oh my god.
- 32:38Speaker 5: And he looked he personalized it to Robbie from one
- 32:41Speaker 5: clown lover to another because you know, he was in
- 32:44Speaker 5: the clown suit at the end, and so with with
- 32:47Speaker 5: the prop.
- 32:48Speaker 2: He drew this up for me. He did a shout
- 32:50Speaker 2: out video and you.
- 32:53Speaker 5: Know through some of some through in some of those extras,
- 32:55Speaker 5: but you know, in in the shout out video. He
- 32:58Speaker 5: was just so genuine because you know, he he knew
- 33:01Speaker 5: I was a big fan of the movie, and he
- 33:03Speaker 5: just he was so appreciative of the support and the
- 33:06Speaker 5: love for his movie, and like he just loved talking
- 33:09Speaker 5: about it. You know, he loved talking about his clowns.
- 33:10Speaker 5: And he did this, you know, he did a sketchbook
- 33:13Speaker 5: of like celebrities as clowns, and he was going into
- 33:15Speaker 5: that and showing all his love of that. And it's
- 33:18Speaker 5: just like you said, you know, Chris, he's just he's
- 33:20Speaker 5: just a really him specifically is a really He's just
- 33:23Speaker 5: a cool dude, you know, and like he's so passionate
- 33:25Speaker 5: about about the fans and his whole universe he created.
- 33:28Speaker 2: It's just awesome.
- 33:30Speaker 1: Well how often is it that? You know, obviously in
- 33:34Speaker 1: music we hear about one hit wonders all the time,
- 33:36Speaker 1: and the Cuter Brothers kind of have that here. But
- 33:41Speaker 1: the one hit wonder was never forgotten and it's lived on.
- 33:43Speaker 1: And I feel like Killer Clowns gets so much more
- 33:47Speaker 1: love and appreciation than active franchises, do you know what
- 33:51Speaker 1: I mean? Like this movie just stays with people and
- 33:54Speaker 1: people appreciate it. Every time I've been to a convention
- 33:57Speaker 1: where the Cuder brothers are there. They have a line
- 34:00Speaker 1: people are waiting to meet them, young, old, everybody. So
- 34:04Speaker 1: this movie has a life of its own. That's pretty
- 34:06Speaker 1: Like we could probably do an episode alone just tracking
- 34:10Speaker 1: the trajectory.
- 34:11Speaker 2: Of it's fascinating. It really is.
- 34:13Speaker 1: Yeah, it's incredible, man. And I talk about an intro
- 34:15Speaker 1: how like you know what defines a cult classic, and
- 34:19Speaker 1: one of the one of the parts of the definition
- 34:20Speaker 1: was like a group of people like who have a
- 34:23Speaker 1: specific love for this movie. And I'm like, well, this
- 34:25Speaker 1: kind of transcends that. Yeah, I don't know anybody who
- 34:28Speaker 1: does not like this movie.
- 34:30Speaker 2: But like it was a cult classic, like you know,
- 34:33Speaker 2: it's so funny, Like it went from.
- 34:35Speaker 5: Like like bizarro late night creature feature, like it's it's
- 34:41Speaker 5: really the only movie that I could possibly think of
- 34:44Speaker 5: that it's it's its own genre, Like it really there's
- 34:46Speaker 5: there's nothing like it, you know, It's like it's really
- 34:49Speaker 5: is such a unique piece of cinema, and like it's
- 34:52Speaker 5: become this pop culture phenomenon, which is really fascinating. It's
- 34:56Speaker 5: it's not that late night monster movie that the cult
- 34:59Speaker 5: hor monster movie that it once was. You know they're
- 35:02Speaker 5: putting out Midnight Mayhem Monster VHS editions, Like that's not
- 35:05Speaker 5: what it is anymore, you know.
- 35:07Speaker 1: Yeah on DVD, this got an MGM Midnight Movies release.
- 35:10Speaker 1: Yeah the Movies Matter at the top, Yeah, which I
- 35:12Speaker 1: remember having, you know what I mean? Yeah, yeah, crazy dude,
- 35:17Speaker 1: Like I feel like it's it's incredible and the work
- 35:20Speaker 1: that Arrow did restoring it for the Blu ray looks fantastic.
- 35:23Speaker 1: I don't own the Screen Factory four K. I watched
- 35:26Speaker 1: the Arrow Blu Ray and I was like, this looks
- 35:28Speaker 1: good enough for me, so I didn't upgrade. But from
- 35:31Speaker 1: my friends in the space whody reviews and stuff, I
- 35:33Speaker 1: heard amazing things about the color, amazing things about that transfer.
- 35:37Speaker 5: Yeah, the the Arrow Blu Ray is fantastic, and which
- 35:40Speaker 5: says a lot. It says a lot that the Screen
- 35:43Speaker 5: Factory is even better, you know, because the Arrow Blu
- 35:45Speaker 5: rays is phenomenal. But it's a movie where it it's
- 35:51Speaker 5: like a four K. It was meant in many ways
- 35:54Speaker 5: for a four K because of the colors, right, and
- 35:56Speaker 5: there's so much pop and there's so much pop to it,
- 35:59Speaker 5: to the Hallett and all that really just it pops
- 36:02Speaker 5: on the four K. So while it's it's fantastic to
- 36:05Speaker 5: watch in the arrow Blu ray and even like on
- 36:07Speaker 5: a VHD, there's nothing like it. But that screen Fafty
- 36:10Speaker 5: four K is is really nice, man, it really they
- 36:12Speaker 5: did a great job.
- 36:14Speaker 1: I'll get my hands on it soon eventually, dude. I
- 36:17Speaker 1: just I have the FYE exclusive slip cover the giant
- 36:22Speaker 1: hand grabbing the girl in the front.
- 36:23Speaker 2: Oh yes, yeah, I think it goes through money.
- 36:26Speaker 1: Dude, bro. I found it after like, I found it
- 36:30Speaker 1: like two years after it came out dusty at an
- 36:33Speaker 1: f Ye and it came in a box. The manager
- 36:35Speaker 1: told me it came in a box and it must
- 36:37Speaker 1: have been found in the warehouse because it had a
- 36:39Speaker 1: one inch layer of dust on it.
- 36:40Speaker 2: Damn.
- 36:41Speaker 1: So it must have like fallen behind the shelf. And
- 36:43Speaker 1: then they found it and just threw it in their
- 36:44Speaker 1: shipment and.
- 36:45Speaker 2: I got it. Got cost Oh damn yet nineteen ninety nine.
- 36:48Speaker 1: I paid for it, dude.
- 36:49Speaker 2: That's fricking awesome.
- 36:50Speaker 1: So I would never be able to get rid of it.
- 36:51Speaker 2: I mean it when I say that thing goes for
- 36:53Speaker 2: big money.
- 36:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I know. I looked it up and I you know,
- 36:56Speaker 1: I'm not like a I'm not a reseller, and I
- 36:58Speaker 1: like it too much to ever get rid of it.
- 37:00Speaker 1: But sure, there's been some times where I'm kind of
- 37:02Speaker 1: like wondering if I want to buy something, and I'm like,
- 37:04Speaker 1: I can probably I did.
- 37:06Speaker 2: I get it.
- 37:07Speaker 5: Man, I'm not one of those people either, but like
- 37:09Speaker 5: every once in a while, I'm like, all right, well,
- 37:11Speaker 5: you know, like well, and uh, I have the I
- 37:14Speaker 5: have that arrow that you know that that's like my
- 37:16Speaker 5: favorite slip that that it's like a purple shimmery like
- 37:21Speaker 5: you know, you know the slip I'm talking about that
- 37:23Speaker 5: arrow art.
- 37:24Speaker 1: It's the one with the with the ten is the
- 37:26Speaker 1: one with the.
- 37:27Speaker 5: Ten and like all of them are on the front
- 37:29Speaker 5: end and it's a like a like a sparkly shimmery. Yeah,
- 37:33Speaker 5: like whatever it is. And I have that sealed, and
- 37:36Speaker 5: you know, I just when I when I bought it
- 37:38Speaker 5: at the time, I think, whatever, you know, listen, I
- 37:42Speaker 5: I this is like one of my favorite movies of
- 37:43Speaker 5: all time. I think I actually bought it sealed and
- 37:47Speaker 5: unsealed because I wanted both, like whatever reason, I wanted
- 37:50Speaker 5: to have like two editions of it. Yeah, And I
- 37:52Speaker 5: was like, hey, I'm gonna watch the regular standard and
- 37:55Speaker 5: I just never opened the slip and so like, I
- 37:58Speaker 5: have that sealed on my show.
- 38:00Speaker 1: Dude, that's such a cool piece to have.
- 38:02Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, so cool.
- 38:04Speaker 1: So chuck diving into your notes. We already talked about
- 38:08Speaker 1: obviously the Dicki's created the opening song without even watching
- 38:11Speaker 1: the movie, which is so cool. Fun fact just for everybody.
- 38:14Speaker 1: This song was the entrance music for my wife and
- 38:16Speaker 1: I had our wedding.
- 38:17Speaker 4: No awesome, yeah we are awesome.
- 38:20Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, we came out to uh so at our
- 38:23Speaker 1: At our wedding, there was there was like fifteen minutes
- 38:25Speaker 1: before we came out because we we had already been
- 38:27Speaker 1: married and we threw a party and when we came
- 38:29Speaker 1: out to go into our dance, which our dance was
- 38:32Speaker 1: the Ice Dance from from Edward Scissorhands, but our entrance
- 38:37Speaker 1: music to come out into the crowd was Killer Clowns.
- 38:39Speaker 4: So that's cool.
- 38:41Speaker 1: Yeah, you want to talk about vibe.
- 38:42Speaker 2: I thought you were a cool dude before that, but
- 38:44Speaker 2: now you're like you just like.
- 38:47Speaker 1: Yeah, dude, So this movie or this song forever is
- 38:51Speaker 1: being played on car rides and everything else. My wife
- 38:53Speaker 1: and I both love it so much.
- 38:55Speaker 5: You gotta have the you should have had the clown
- 38:57Speaker 5: March is your your first dance, you know, your actual wedding.
- 39:00Speaker 1: So exactly, listen, Van, you gotta have We We had
- 39:04Speaker 1: some ideas of like what we could do, and then
- 39:06Speaker 1: like every time we got too cheesy, we changed up.
- 39:09Speaker 1: And then one day I think we were we. I
- 39:13Speaker 1: had on I love movie scores and stuff, so both
- 39:16Speaker 1: my wife and I do and I had on like
- 39:18Speaker 1: a Spotify playlist and the ice Dance came on from
- 39:21Speaker 1: Edwards's Heir Hands And this was like two weeks before
- 39:24Speaker 1: our wedding. Yeah, and we both looked at each other
- 39:26Speaker 1: and we're like, well, there it is, you know.
- 39:27Speaker 2: Like, yeah, it's beautiful. Yeah.
- 39:29Speaker 1: Yeah. So, Chuck, you want to dive into the second
- 39:32Speaker 1: note that you have about the title.
- 39:34Speaker 4: Yeah, so the movie was originally supposed to be just
- 39:37Speaker 4: titled Killer Clowns, but they thought that it sounded too
- 39:40Speaker 4: much like a slasher film, which isn't what they were
- 39:42Speaker 4: trying to go for. That they added from Outer Space
- 39:44Speaker 4: to add that medic feel to it, which is what
- 39:47Speaker 4: they were going for.
- 39:49Speaker 1: So for I'm going to steal note three from you, Chuck,
- 39:52Speaker 1: because you mentioned Mike Tobacco and the Trenzi brothers were
- 39:56Speaker 1: based off of the Kyoto Brothers childhood friends and this
- 40:00Speaker 1: this is like the perfect introductory point for this movie.
- 40:05Speaker 1: Up on Lover's Point when the Turnzi brothers pull up
- 40:10Speaker 1: in the ice cream truck, which is like the greatest
- 40:15Speaker 1: little I'm trying to remember what he says when he
- 40:18Speaker 1: pulls up. Dude, they're these two characters are insane for
- 40:24Speaker 1: this movie. Dude, did you guys have, like Chuck, I
- 40:27Speaker 1: know where we grew we did not have a lover's lane,
- 40:28Speaker 1: Robbie where you're at. Did you guys ever have like
- 40:30Speaker 1: a lover's point or anything like that?
- 40:32Speaker 2: No, definitely not.
- 40:33Speaker 1: Okay, all right. I just wanted to make sure it's
- 40:36Speaker 1: like there was unrealistic thing about this movie to me.
- 40:38Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it's killer clowns.
- 40:40Speaker 1: I'm like, yeah, but who has this like who goes
- 40:42Speaker 1: to the separate places?
- 40:44Speaker 5: Funny they mentioned like that was like directly from the Blob, right,
- 40:48Speaker 5: that whole scene, that whole shooting star like crashdown like
- 40:52Speaker 5: lover's point type situation.
- 40:54Speaker 4: Yeah, it's fun that you bring that up, because that's
- 40:56Speaker 4: actually the next commentary note I had is that they
- 40:58Speaker 4: said that they modeled the movie off of The Blob
- 41:01Speaker 4: from nineteen fifty eight, so there's a lot of similarities,
- 41:04Speaker 4: especially you know, the shooting star going through the woods
- 41:07Speaker 4: to go see where it landed and all that.
- 41:10Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, it's a pretty perfect movie to model
- 41:13Speaker 1: your movie off of.
- 41:15Speaker 2: Absolutely, yeah.
- 41:17Speaker 1: I would think if there's any the Blob is pretty
- 41:19Speaker 1: much like the definitive fifties monster movie, I think, agreed.
- 41:25Speaker 1: Another fun fact about my wife and I we took
- 41:27Speaker 1: our engagement photos at the Colonial Theater where The Blob
- 41:30Speaker 1: was filmed. Just we have a lot of like marriage
- 41:34Speaker 1: around killer clowns from matter Space. I don't know how,
- 41:37Speaker 1: but my favorite part of all of this is, Chuck,
- 41:42Speaker 1: do you want to talk about the reason Mike has
- 41:43Speaker 1: a raft in the back of his truck?
- 41:46Speaker 4: Yeah, So there was supposed to be a bit of
- 41:48Speaker 4: dialogue where Mike was supposed to go into the story
- 41:51Speaker 4: of why he had the raft, but they kind they
- 41:53Speaker 4: cut it out just to like keep the movie going.
- 41:56Speaker 4: But the reason he had the ramped in the back
- 41:57Speaker 4: of his car was because he took it at this
- 42:00Speaker 4: ended up getting lost at sea, so we actually had
- 42:03Speaker 4: to get rescued by the Coastguard and after he was rescued,
- 42:06Speaker 4: his dad was so pissed off that he just stabbed it.
- 42:10Speaker 4: So when you see all the patches and stuff on
- 42:12Speaker 4: the raft, that's because that just went ape shit crazy
- 42:15Speaker 4: on it.
- 42:17Speaker 1: I want to add real quick, my wife just texted
- 42:20Speaker 1: me it's called Top of the World. Yes, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 42:25Speaker 1: she can hear us in the other room, and she
- 42:27Speaker 1: said it's called.
- 42:29Speaker 2: Actually, I'm actually mad. I didn't know that.
- 42:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I dude, I literally I was like, I know
- 42:34Speaker 1: there's something and I couldn't find the Top of the World. Okay,
- 42:37Speaker 1: so thank you, thank you, thank you for that. Save
- 42:41Speaker 1: Live here on the podcast Saving Our Life here. Yeah that.
- 42:48Speaker 1: I don't know why. That's so funny to me, the
- 42:49Speaker 1: whole story.
- 42:50Speaker 5: I also just love how like there's three mega three
- 42:54Speaker 5: clown mega fans on here that don't know the name
- 42:56Speaker 5: of this day and your wife just calls out, like
- 42:58Speaker 5: Lover's Point or whatever, it's the top of the World,
- 43:01Speaker 5: the World.
- 43:02Speaker 1: I know, yeah, yeah. It popped up on the top
- 43:04Speaker 1: of my thing like a text, and I'm like, oh,
- 43:06Speaker 1: of course, I'm like, of course she knows.
- 43:08Speaker 2: Of course, dude.
- 43:10Speaker 1: If I could get if I could get her on
- 43:12Speaker 1: for this I absolutely would. Man, she probably knows more
- 43:14Speaker 1: about this movie than all of us. Oh yeah, my
- 43:17Speaker 1: wife has this amazing power though, to remember. Like when
- 43:21Speaker 1: I watch movies, I remember visual I can tell you
- 43:23Speaker 1: the way a camera moved, the way a cut a
- 43:25Speaker 1: visual effect. I can tell you all of the technical stuff.
- 43:28Speaker 1: I can't tell you character names, I can't remember dialogue.
- 43:33Speaker 1: Terrible at that stuff. She has this ability to remember
- 43:36Speaker 1: like the background actor who walks by and what movie
- 43:39Speaker 1: they're from, you know what I mean, like that level
- 43:42Speaker 1: of detail.
- 43:43Speaker 5: I'm pretty good with quotes, Like that's like a superpower.
- 43:47Speaker 5: I have like quotes and like random movies you.
- 43:49Speaker 1: Know, Okay, okay, yeah that's Herner Brothers. Yeah yeah, even
- 43:53Speaker 1: like they'll quote a movie I've seen a thousand times.
- 43:55Speaker 1: I still don't pick up on it. Yeah, I'm like, wait,
- 43:57Speaker 1: whate movie. But if you went but if you to,
- 43:59Speaker 1: if you said, hey, man, what was that scene, I
- 44:01Speaker 1: could tell you how the camera moved and how they edit.
- 44:03Speaker 1: I don't know why.
- 44:05Speaker 2: It's a weird, weird power.
- 44:07Speaker 1: I'm like that superhero that got Like I'm like in
- 44:09Speaker 1: Mystery Men, like the.
- 44:12Speaker 2: Yeah, the Waffler.
- 44:18Speaker 1: But yeah, I just love the story of the raft
- 44:20Speaker 1: in the back, him getting lost, the coastguard, the dad
- 44:24Speaker 1: stabbing it, taping it back up, putting it in the
- 44:26Speaker 1: back of the truck. It's just like one of those
- 44:28Speaker 1: cool little like to me, that's character, even though it's
- 44:31Speaker 1: not explained, because I remember when I was just watching
- 44:34Speaker 1: this and every single time I was like, man, why
- 44:36Speaker 1: is it? Why are they on the back? Why are
- 44:37Speaker 1: they in a raft? I mean, I mean, it's probably
- 44:40Speaker 1: more comfortable than blankets in the back of your suv though,
- 44:43Speaker 1: you know what I mean, in the back of your truck.
- 44:46Speaker 1: Shout out that, Yeah, shout out to that. I love
- 44:51Speaker 1: the Tarenzi brothers constantly blaming each other for everything of
- 44:54Speaker 1: whose ideas who? And their failed ice cream truck business
- 44:58Speaker 1: doesn't help the fact that they have two ladies in
- 45:00Speaker 1: the back just eating all their ice cream that they
- 45:02Speaker 1: offered to them.
- 45:03Speaker 5: I'm sure who are who were townies? By the way,
- 45:05Speaker 5: those were local, local townies.
- 45:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I one hundred percent believe it. Yeah, oh for sure.
- 45:14Speaker 1: So what's cool about this is obviously the shooting star.
- 45:18Speaker 1: They go and they chase it. We are this is
- 45:22Speaker 1: how do I how do I explain this? I remember
- 45:25Speaker 1: reading about Royal Dano and this was his final appearance.
- 45:30Speaker 1: He plays farmer Jean Green. He is the first one
- 45:33Speaker 1: to come across him and his dog that the first
- 45:36Speaker 1: one is to come across the tent, And I love
- 45:38Speaker 1: his enthusiasm when he comes across it and he's like, oh,
- 45:41Speaker 1: he's like, I had no idea that there was a
- 45:43Speaker 1: circus set up out here. Yeah, He's so excited. And
- 45:47Speaker 1: I just love that the classic carnival style, Like everything
- 45:53Speaker 1: in this movie is just that traditional. When I think
- 45:56Speaker 1: of Carnival, I think of killer clowns. It's so authentic
- 46:00Speaker 1: to down to even like, I know, it's stupid, little
- 46:02Speaker 1: detail you think, Yeah, clearly they're aliens. Even the detail
- 46:06Speaker 1: of the the rope like pinned down in the ground
- 46:10Speaker 1: to keep the ten grounded.
- 46:11Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, you know what I mean.
- 46:12Speaker 1: Little. Yeah.
- 46:13Speaker 5: One of the things that, like they mentioned throughout the
- 46:16Speaker 5: commentary that that makes this movie so fascinating is that
- 46:20Speaker 5: they they really did their best to create a fun
- 46:23Speaker 5: vibe and a welcoming vibe from the clowns, and they
- 46:26Speaker 5: then they they you know, mentioned this a few different times,
- 46:30Speaker 5: like they wanted every time the clowns came on screen
- 46:33Speaker 5: or anytime there's an interaction with the clown to be like,
- 46:35Speaker 5: at first, at first glance, they're welcoming, right, and then
- 46:39Speaker 5: upon further inspection or you know, upon further interaction with
- 46:42Speaker 5: the clowns, then you start to realize that they're actually
- 46:45Speaker 5: you know, these these monsters matter space. But upon you know,
- 46:48Speaker 5: they they lure you in because it's a clown, right,
- 46:51Speaker 5: and clowns are supposed to be friendly.
- 46:52Speaker 2: And I thought that was a really interesting, you know,
- 46:55Speaker 2: kind of.
- 46:57Speaker 5: Thought process to have in developing these characters. You know,
- 47:00Speaker 5: like it was really cool, well that.
- 47:02Speaker 1: I can't think of another clown, like in direct contrasts
- 47:06Speaker 1: I think of Art. You know, Art is terrifying from
- 47:09Speaker 1: the get go. There's nothing about Art the clown that's welcoming,
- 47:12Speaker 1: you know what I mean. So that is, immediately if
- 47:16Speaker 1: I saw Art the clown, there would be no question
- 47:18Speaker 1: of I would not be like, oh, this guy's probably
- 47:21Speaker 1: got good attentions. He needs to do something to trick
- 47:23Speaker 1: me otherwise.
- 47:24Speaker 5: While everyone in the Terrifier franchises come across him on
- 47:27Speaker 5: like the boss and like, hey, hell are you, They're
- 47:30Speaker 5: all like waving high to him, Like he's just like,
- 47:33Speaker 5: I'm not waving heard of that guy.
- 47:34Speaker 4: But what mind the sketchy garbage bag, Oh yeah, that
- 47:37Speaker 4: he carries around.
- 47:39Speaker 1: What's fun about this movie though, is after we get
- 47:42Speaker 1: into once they're in the town, the movie becomes just
- 47:45Speaker 1: a series of gags, you know what I mean, And
- 47:48Speaker 1: there is we'll talk about them. But there's two moments
- 47:51Speaker 1: in this movie that I think are terrifying because of
- 47:53Speaker 1: the contrast between how fun and lighthearted the rest of
- 47:55Speaker 1: the movie is. There is two scenes in particular that
- 47:59Speaker 1: really get scary to me and kind of show that
- 48:03Speaker 1: evil side really well. But you're right, even when they're
- 48:07Speaker 1: ringing doorbells with the pizza box at first people, I mean,
- 48:10Speaker 1: I would be confused if I opened the door and
- 48:12Speaker 1: there was a clown, but there's no immediate threat, and
- 48:14Speaker 1: then the threat comes yep, And that seems to happen
- 48:17Speaker 1: over and over and over again. I love to go
- 48:22Speaker 1: as far as like their ship is a tent and
- 48:25Speaker 1: even on the inside the buttons on the doors, like
- 48:29Speaker 1: it feels like a funhouse. You know, when you get
- 48:32Speaker 1: to the end of the movie and they're actually navigating
- 48:33Speaker 1: the ship, everything is a funhouse, and that is so
- 48:38Speaker 1: cool to me. It's one of my favorite design choices
- 48:41Speaker 1: about this movie, and we talked about how or they
- 48:47Speaker 1: talked about in the commentary how the woods were done
- 48:49Speaker 1: inside of warehouse, so that was a set. Obviously the
- 48:52Speaker 1: circus stuff was a set, but it was created with
- 48:54Speaker 1: sailboat sails to actually design. So it looks like that
- 49:01Speaker 1: you know, thin fabric that they would do the circus
- 49:03Speaker 1: tents out of, which is really really cool. But Chuck,
- 49:07Speaker 1: one thing you mentioned in this is the clowns were
- 49:10Speaker 1: not supposed to show up till later, which they show
- 49:13Speaker 1: up really early in this cut, So why what happened there?
- 49:22Speaker 4: So yeah, they originally wanted to had the clowns like
- 49:25Speaker 4: not show up until later on in the film, but
- 49:28Speaker 4: one of the executive producers approached them and was like, look,
- 49:32Speaker 4: bounds need to be in the first reel. We need
- 49:34Speaker 4: to show it. Then first thing ended up switching that around.
- 49:40Speaker 1: Interesting that they I don't know, man, that's one I like,
- 49:45Speaker 1: how I mean this movie is what eighty eight minutes long?
- 49:48Speaker 1: I like how briskly things start. I mean fifteen minutes
- 49:53Speaker 1: in they're coming into the town, you know what I mean,
- 49:56Speaker 1: It's very quick.
- 49:58Speaker 5: I'm curious what it would have looked like if they
- 50:00Speaker 5: went the other route, you know, like how they would
- 50:02Speaker 5: have introduced the clowns, like maybe clown March at the
- 50:05Speaker 5: first time we see the clowns, you know, like who knows.
- 50:08Speaker 5: But yeah, I mean I agree, like it works on
- 50:12Speaker 5: all cylinders the way they do it.
- 50:13Speaker 2: But it is quick. It is super quick, you know.
- 50:16Speaker 1: Yeah, it's very fast because you have the I say
- 50:19Speaker 1: with air quotes like the death of the Farmer.
- 50:23Speaker 2: And you know he gets there.
- 50:25Speaker 1: Yeah, man, don't I hate that.
- 50:30Speaker 2: Don't touch dogs and movies. Yeah with Michael Myers, I'm
- 50:34Speaker 2: talking to you. They gave him a little shout out
- 50:36Speaker 2: at the end with the little cocoon.
- 50:37Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 50:38Speaker 1: Yeah, but you know, we get into obviously they Mike,
- 50:46Speaker 1: they see the shooting Star, they go and they chase
- 50:48Speaker 1: it down, they come across it. This is when we
- 50:50Speaker 1: start getting those first shots of the interior, which are
- 50:53Speaker 1: awesome that I call it, like the power room that
- 50:56Speaker 1: they come into when they go through the one door
- 50:59Speaker 1: and it's the it's that wide shot of the Matte
- 51:02Speaker 1: painting with the orb It's it's so cool because it's
- 51:07Speaker 1: the This is how I picture like the clown cars,
- 51:11Speaker 1: like this is how much room is in them. That's
- 51:12Speaker 1: why forty clowns can climb out of a car. But
- 51:15Speaker 1: the room in this ship is crazy big.
- 51:19Speaker 2: That's a great shot. That that orb. It's almost like
- 51:21Speaker 2: Star Wars esque flight, you know what I mean? Yeah,
- 51:24Speaker 2: it is, and it's.
- 51:25Speaker 1: Cool because, like I look at it, it's clearly a
- 51:27Speaker 1: matte painting, you know what I mean, outside the platform
- 51:29Speaker 1: that they're standing on. But then you have that orb
- 51:31Speaker 1: and you have the lightning sparks kind of shooting off
- 51:35Speaker 1: of it. So I think technically it's a really and
- 51:37Speaker 1: it never changes an angle. We only see the room
- 51:39Speaker 1: from that single angle. So I think that's really cool,
- 51:43Speaker 1: and I think that's a cool way to kind of
- 51:44Speaker 1: introduce the inside of the ship into that room because
- 51:48Speaker 1: then from there we go into the cocoon room, which
- 51:52Speaker 1: is one of the coolest sets ever. I want to
- 51:55Speaker 1: hang out there.
- 51:56Speaker 5: Yeah, I just want to talk real quickly about that
- 51:57Speaker 5: that other spot again, that yeah, you know, that room.
- 52:00Speaker 5: It also just adds to the allure of who these
- 52:02Speaker 5: clowns are like because we just don't know, like especially
- 52:05Speaker 5: at this point in the movie, like we just we
- 52:07Speaker 5: we just don't know what they are, and we still
- 52:09Speaker 5: don't know what they are right after the movie and
- 52:11Speaker 5: it's been out for you know, however long. We just
- 52:13Speaker 5: don't know what they are. And like I know, there's
- 52:15Speaker 5: talks of a sequel and all these things for a
- 52:17Speaker 5: million times over, but like, one of the things that's
- 52:19Speaker 5: so special about this movie is that we just don't
- 52:21Speaker 5: know who these these clowns are, right, Like, we don't
- 52:23Speaker 5: know where they came from, what the deal is, and like,
- 52:25Speaker 5: like you mentioned that shot specifically, I mean, this thing
- 52:28Speaker 5: is massive inside right, and it's just it's it's another
- 52:31Speaker 5: example of the Kyioder Brothers and just the universe that
- 52:35Speaker 5: this thing has, you know what I mean.
- 52:38Speaker 1: Yeah, And it's super cool that there's been no I
- 52:40Speaker 1: actually think it's so much better with no explanation.
- 52:42Speaker 2: Yes, yes, I don't totally.
- 52:44Speaker 1: I don't really care to know, you know, anything else.
- 52:47Speaker 1: Like we know so much about I would say, let's
- 52:50Speaker 1: pick another iconic up Pennywise. You know, we know that
- 52:54Speaker 1: that that he is some sort of supernatural being in
- 52:57Speaker 1: Pennywise is just one of his interpretations of himself. He
- 53:00Speaker 1: can be anything that he wants. We know him as Pennywise. Yeah,
- 53:03Speaker 1: because that's what he chooses. That adds to the lure
- 53:08Speaker 1: of it, and that whole world Killer Clowns is so
- 53:12Speaker 1: contained I don't need anything.
- 53:14Speaker 5: Else, I agree, And like it's interesting that you bring
- 53:16Speaker 5: that up because Halloween's my favorite movie of all time,
- 53:19Speaker 5: and Killer Clowns is number two on that list. And
- 53:22Speaker 5: it's the same reason why I adore Michael Myers, right Like,
- 53:25Speaker 5: we don't know why he can get up after any
- 53:26Speaker 5: shot six times, right like they always there's always a
- 53:29Speaker 5: very particular balance between is Michael Myers human or is
- 53:33Speaker 5: he not?
- 53:33Speaker 2: Right?
- 53:33Speaker 5: Like no one knows, And the reason why this franchise
- 53:36Speaker 5: is so special is because they always walk that fine
- 53:38Speaker 5: line really well and you never truly know what he is.
- 53:41Speaker 5: Same thing with the Clowns, right, like, we just don't know,
- 53:43Speaker 5: and like it's just better off that way.
- 53:45Speaker 1: Yeah, And I don't know what a sequel. I was
- 53:47Speaker 1: gonna bring up a sequel later, and I'm happy it
- 53:50Speaker 1: hasn't come to fruition yet because I don't think you know.
- 53:53Speaker 1: I'm all for filmmakers and creators telling their stories however
- 53:58Speaker 1: they seem fit. But I feel like if if the
- 54:01Speaker 1: Kyoto Brothers really felt like they needed it, it would have
- 54:03Speaker 1: been done somehow, you know what I mean, like I
- 54:06Speaker 1: think so, but that's just me. But this cocoon room set,
- 54:11Speaker 1: this cotton candy cocoon set is one of my favorites ever.
- 54:16Speaker 1: It's so much fun. And I think I read that
- 54:18Speaker 1: they did. Does anybody know how many of those cocoons
- 54:21Speaker 1: they built, because I think I read over one hundred.
- 54:24Speaker 4: Yeah, they mentioned about over one hundred cocoons they did
- 54:26Speaker 4: in that room.
- 54:27Speaker 2: Wow, crazy, dude.
- 54:29Speaker 1: That room is so cool.
- 54:30Speaker 5: It's a warehouse, right that that that's it? Yeah, yeah,
- 54:34Speaker 5: that room is uh yeah.
- 54:36Speaker 1: It's it's such a cool room and there's so much
- 54:38Speaker 1: depth and even like you know, even when when when
- 54:42Speaker 1: the clown comes in he's playing with the little.
- 54:44Speaker 2: Knobs and oh yeah, yeah.
- 54:46Speaker 1: It's just so silly, dude, and it never like takes
- 54:49Speaker 1: you out of it. I never once was like, Okay,
- 54:51Speaker 1: this is too silly for me. And the cocoon idea
- 54:55Speaker 1: is terrifying, dude.
- 54:56Speaker 5: So I think I think that's what it is for me,
- 54:59Speaker 5: Like that transfer formative horror, like that body horror aspect,
- 55:02Speaker 5: like same thing with Ernest Man. And regardless of the
- 55:04Speaker 5: Kyoto brothers are not you know, the fact they worked
- 55:06Speaker 5: on both films, those were two very influential films for me.
- 55:09Speaker 5: And I think it's because it's that that transformative horror,
- 55:12Speaker 5: like when you're a kid and like the idea of
- 55:15Speaker 5: getting you know, like condensed down to these red syrupy
- 55:21Speaker 5: juices and those cocoons, you know, is is terrifying. The
- 55:25Speaker 5: same thing with in Earnest, like being turned into a
- 55:27Speaker 5: little wooden doll, right like, and that's the brilliance of
- 55:30Speaker 5: the Kyoto Brothers. Like it's just that to me was
- 55:33Speaker 5: so gripping, you know, and so terrifying. And I really
- 55:36Speaker 5: feel like the reasons why these movies in particular were
- 55:39Speaker 5: so impactful for me, you know, like that look no
- 55:42Speaker 5: further than that cocoon room, like that that's everything.
- 55:44Speaker 1: And also the simplicity of like if this movie came
- 55:47Speaker 1: out today, when they peel the cocoon layer, you would
- 55:51Speaker 1: have like the face would come off, it would be
- 55:54Speaker 1: really gross. No, in this they peel it off and
- 55:56Speaker 1: it's just a face painted red.
- 55:58Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, you know what I mean.
- 55:59Speaker 1: Like it's literally that simple. They're like, how can we
- 56:02Speaker 1: show this? They're like, just paint their face red. You're like, okay, cool,
- 56:04Speaker 1: that's it. So it's not graphic, but it sells the
- 56:07Speaker 1: horror of what is happening inside of these cocoons, you know, definitely,
- 56:12Speaker 1: But Chuck, do you want to go over because we
- 56:13Speaker 1: have a couple of notes here about some of the
- 56:15Speaker 1: productions and stuff like this, some of like the set
- 56:18Speaker 1: pieces for the circus tent, the cocoon room and stuff.
- 56:20Speaker 1: Do you want to go over that stuff?
- 56:22Speaker 4: Yeah, So on topic of the cocoon, that was actually
- 56:25Speaker 4: one of the bigger sets that they said they had,
- 56:27Speaker 4: and uh, definitely has that creepy feeling because when we
- 56:29Speaker 4: see it in the beginning of the film, there's nothing
- 56:31Speaker 4: in there. It's just completely empty for the most part.
- 56:34Speaker 4: Then later on in the film we see just how
- 56:36Speaker 4: many people they actually end up killing in this town.
- 56:39Speaker 4: So there is that weird vibe. But they said that
- 56:42Speaker 4: the set pieces for the circus tents were made in
- 56:47Speaker 4: a way so that they can easily rearrange them on
- 56:49Speaker 4: set to make it look like a different scene each time.
- 56:53Speaker 4: Those kind of like you know, lego in a way,
- 56:56Speaker 4: I guess you can say. But that whole interior was
- 57:01Speaker 4: based off of something called the Memphis Design and Doctor
- 57:04Speaker 4: Seuss Now, were you guys familiar with Memphis design, Like
- 57:09Speaker 4: prior to listening to the audio commentary, because I'd never
- 57:11Speaker 4: even heard of it until then.
- 57:14Speaker 1: I feel like I feel like I do. I was
- 57:21Speaker 1: watching the behind the scenes of a music video where
- 57:26Speaker 1: they mentioned using Memphis design to do like an ever
- 57:30Speaker 1: changing set. So when I was in high school, I
- 57:34Speaker 1: was on the like production team for plays, and you
- 57:39Speaker 1: know in plays, it's all like smoking mirrors. It's quickly
- 57:42Speaker 1: like diverting attention to swap out a set, or like
- 57:45Speaker 1: the stage the curtain closes and you quickly are swapping
- 57:49Speaker 1: out sets. I was watching behind the scenes of this
- 57:51Speaker 1: music video where the camera was spinning and every single
- 57:54Speaker 1: time something went out of frame, they were flipping everything
- 57:57Speaker 1: around to like make it a new set, so that
- 57:59Speaker 1: way when a camera is spun back around, it would
- 58:01Speaker 1: be new and different. And they had mentioned Memphis design,
- 58:05Speaker 1: but he didn't say what it was.
- 58:07Speaker 4: Yeah, So as soon as he brought the Kyoto brothers
- 58:10Speaker 4: brought up the Memphis design, I debouted to go on
- 58:12Speaker 4: Google and do a little bit of research on it
- 58:15Speaker 4: and come to find out that it was actually an
- 58:17Speaker 4: Italian design and architecture movement back in the eighties that
- 58:20Speaker 4: used bold colors, geometric shapes, playful patterns and unconventional combinations.
- 58:26Speaker 4: And also going through that, I found out that another
- 58:29Speaker 4: example that used Memphis design was actually Peem's Playhouse. That
- 58:34Speaker 4: was like actually the first instance I've ever seen it,
- 58:36Speaker 4: and I just never knew the name.
- 58:38Speaker 1: Is that like the that's like the the Tim Burton
- 58:42Speaker 1: doorways with like the odd shape on the door, with
- 58:45Speaker 1: like that kind of stuff you're talking about.
- 58:46Speaker 4: Iteay, just weird, weird shapes, very colorful.
- 58:51Speaker 1: Yeah, my brain instantly just goes to Tim Burton for that.
- 58:54Speaker 1: That's what I think about. Immediately watch any movie with that.
- 58:57Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, it looks like Tim Burton.
- 58:59Speaker 4: Yeah, you can play his movie's out immediately.
- 59:02Speaker 1: Wait what did you just say?
- 59:04Speaker 2: Another door? Another another another door. That's sad. It's just
- 59:09Speaker 2: like the doors are like another door, it's smaller.
- 59:15Speaker 4: Such a good bit.
- 59:16Speaker 1: Yeah yeah yeah so a hunter. Yeah, so later you
- 59:19Speaker 1: said hunter or Hunter cocoons set up later in the movie.
- 59:22Speaker 1: Took four fog dry ice machines to fill the floor
- 59:25Speaker 1: of a fog which that's a massive set. Yeah. And
- 59:30Speaker 1: the cocoons my wife and I were talking about last
- 59:32Speaker 1: time we watched it, what we thought they were made
- 59:33Speaker 1: up out of to kind of get that look. And
- 59:36Speaker 1: it was polyester batting and cardboard and then painted pink
- 59:40Speaker 1: yep so, which was cool. One of my most like
- 59:44Speaker 1: fun things learning about this commentary and one of the
- 59:46Speaker 1: most shocking in my opinion. I couldn't wait to bring
- 59:48Speaker 1: it up now I can. Is the popcorn gun, which.
- 59:52Speaker 5: Was really yeah, real real, that's like the most expensive prop,
- 59:54Speaker 5: right I think that's.
- 59:55Speaker 2: Seven Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 59:59Speaker 1: Oh my god, dude, for to make a gun to
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: shop popcorn.
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: Yeah, that's insane, samee, dude.
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: I mean I look, look, man, how many how many
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: years out are we from this movie? I can go
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: to Spirit Halloween buy fifty bucks.
- 1:00:10Speaker 5: I have that. Yeah, it's mass I don't know. It's
- 1:00:13Speaker 5: like sitting in my closet. I have nowhere to put it.
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: Yeah, dude, we I know my wife last time we
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: were at Spirit she wanted it and I was like,
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: I don't know where to put it, Like I don't
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: know what to do with it.
- 1:00:22Speaker 5: I had to get it, like there's no there's no
- 1:00:24Speaker 5: option for me, Like I had to get it. But
- 1:00:25Speaker 5: like I it's literally sitting in my closet.
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: Yeah, but the popcorn gun is so cool and we'll
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: talk about it in a little bit like exactly what
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: the uses. But this brings up one of my favorite
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: little pieces from the commentary, which is the balloon dogs. Yeah,
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: it's just so funny to me. So they run, they're
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: being chased by the clowns, they run out, they get
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: into the woods, they get just out of the sight
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: of the clowns, and they put together a balloon animal
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: dog who then can track the scent.
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: Doesn't it like bark too? I think, like, yeah, that's
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: like a barking noise.
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, So Chuck, you want to talk
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: about how that was made.
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: Yeah, so this was they just used actual balloons to
- 1:01:07Speaker 4: make the balloon dogs, and uh. They talked about how
- 1:01:10Speaker 4: they were going through so many because any little brick
- 1:01:13Speaker 4: from the pine needles on the ground would make the
- 1:01:15Speaker 4: dogs pop, so they ended up having to cover the
- 1:01:19Speaker 4: legs with multiple layers of latex to prevent that from happening.
- 1:01:23Speaker 5: My absolute favorite bit from that scene, and I'm sure
- 1:01:26Speaker 5: you're gonna you you'd already know what I'm gonna say,
- 1:01:29Speaker 5: but it's the fact that as the in that scene,
- 1:01:32Speaker 5: there's a cutshot when it turns to I don't know,
- 1:01:34Speaker 5: is it Slim or Spike or whoever it is that
- 1:01:36Speaker 5: that it has the uh the uh the the balloon
- 1:01:40Speaker 5: animal and blue animal is not there. It's just it's
- 1:01:43Speaker 5: just yeah, just literally, it's just the leash of the
- 1:01:46Speaker 5: blue animal, not the animal. It's just it's so unbelievable
- 1:01:50Speaker 5: and it just works because this movie is just so zany,
- 1:01:53Speaker 5: you know.
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I just thought that was so clever, Like, yeah,
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: you know, obviously clearly they can't run and keep up
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: with them, but pulling out a balloon animal dope, Like
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: I said, it just leans into the bit over and
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: over and over again, you know what I mean, It
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: just leans into it. And the fact that the popcorn
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: sticks to them that then allows them to kind of
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: not really track them, but later kind of make duplicates
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: of the clowns and make these little monsters out of
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: them in the shower scene.
- 1:02:23Speaker 5: Yeah, and then that's another like just like a great
- 1:02:28Speaker 5: you know, a great bit from the movie that like
- 1:02:32Speaker 5: they have the popcorn right, and like it it's like
- 1:02:37Speaker 5: you don't know what it is, right, Like you shoot
- 1:02:38Speaker 5: the popcorn gun and you just you don't know what
- 1:02:40Speaker 5: it is, right, And like she has done her at
- 1:02:42Speaker 5: her sweat and everything, and like again, it's not told
- 1:02:44Speaker 5: much later that we find out what it is, but
- 1:02:46Speaker 5: like you're in suspense that whole time. You're like, you know,
- 1:02:48Speaker 5: the popcorn something right, there's a gun shooting popcorn or
- 1:02:51Speaker 5: you think the popcorn something right. You don't know the
- 1:02:53Speaker 5: first time you see it, and it is something, but
- 1:02:56Speaker 5: it's just it's just, you know, that foreshadowing is fantast
- 1:03:00Speaker 5: like that, that whole concept of like the popcorn gone
- 1:03:03Speaker 5: and what it could possibly mean.
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: It's just great, yeah it is, and it doesn't come
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: up until way later.
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it pays off eventually, but not you know,
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: it's not it's not soon. But originally, Chuck, you mentioned
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: how the car chase scene was supposed to be the
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: beginning of the movie.
- 1:03:22Speaker 4: Yeah, so they talked about how that was originally supposed
- 1:03:24Speaker 4: to be the opening of the movie and it was
- 1:03:26Speaker 4: the inception of the entire concept of the film.
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: So cut out everything start. So I wonder it was
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: it supposed to be like them seeing the star and
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: then coming here or no, it just starts with them
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: running with popcorn stuck on them from the clowns, and
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: then they follow them into town and that's opening credits, like.
- 1:03:49Speaker 4: Yeah, they didn't really go too much into it. Just
- 1:03:51Speaker 4: as soon as that scene came on, they said like, yeah,
- 1:03:54Speaker 4: this is where the concept came was incepted from, and
- 1:03:57Speaker 4: it was supposed to be the original opening, so I'm
- 1:03:59Speaker 4: guess and maybe we saw like the comic come downs
- 1:04:02Speaker 4: the Darkest Tent.
- 1:04:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: The idea was like that.
- 1:04:07Speaker 5: They were having conversations about at inception, what is the
- 1:04:10Speaker 5: scariest thing you possibly see if you're driving along at night,
- 1:04:13Speaker 5: and what's the scariest thing you can possibly see out
- 1:04:15Speaker 5: your window? And they were like, if you saw a
- 1:04:18Speaker 5: clown driving alongside you and that that's that was like
- 1:04:21Speaker 5: kind of how that started.
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: Oh, that was oh on the motorcycle. Well I call
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: it the motorcycle.
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:04:27Speaker 5: And then they were like, let's take it a step further.
- 1:04:29Speaker 5: What if this clown was not even driving anything?
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: Right?
- 1:04:31Speaker 5: If it was just like hovering or in the air.
- 1:04:33Speaker 5: That was kind of like that the seed idea that
- 1:04:36Speaker 5: that spawned, like all of it.
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: Dude, that's so that's so cool man, that's awesome. You
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: know when I think of like I would be concerned
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: about I was driving along at night and I did fine, Well,
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: if a clown drove up next to me, I'd be
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: pretty terrified. It makes me think of if anybody's from
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: anybody listenings from the East Coast. I don't know. I
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: would I say, ten years ago, we had a clown incident.
- 1:05:02Speaker 5: Yes, yeah, yep, all over Staten Island, right, that was
- 1:05:05Speaker 5: like a big Staten Island thing, and then it like spread.
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: It was like no, I mean it happened at a
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: park like near my house at the time. Yeah, And
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: for people listening, They're like, what the hell are you
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: talking about? There was like this random out of nowhere.
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: Suddenly there were clowns everywhere.
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: That was wild. That was a wild thing.
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: Yeah, And people were like reporting occurrences, are being chased
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: by them, some had weapons, and then clearly there was
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: some exaggeration, you know what I mean, there were some
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: fake videos going around, but this was a real thing
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: that occurred. And then one day it just stopped. It
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: just never yeah, it just nobody ever talked about it again.
- 1:05:39Speaker 4: So it was weird, weird times.
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: Yeah, it was a weird, weird, weir weird thing. But
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: every single time I think of any clown movie, I
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: just think, like I remember living through the era of
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: the Mysterious.
- 1:05:50Speaker 5: I I that I did not remember that until just now,
- 1:05:53Speaker 5: and like that was a terrifying event. That was like
- 1:05:56Speaker 5: really scary, Like you see these stories like I'm not listening.
- 1:05:59Speaker 5: I love killer clowns out of shase, but like I think,
- 1:06:01Speaker 5: deep downside, I'm scared of clowns, like truly, and like
- 1:06:04Speaker 5: that it's just it's it was, It's horrifying.
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, so real quick, because I'll put my vote
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: out there. One of my least favorite clown costumes is
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: the clown design from hell House. That scares the hell
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: out of me.
- 1:06:17Speaker 5: What about you, guys, least favorite isn't like it scares
- 1:06:21Speaker 5: you the most? Yeah, yeah, okay, yeah, I listen. I'm
- 1:06:24Speaker 5: I'm a big fan of that franchise. I I watched
- 1:06:27Speaker 5: it for the first time with that umbrella set, and
- 1:06:31Speaker 5: that was my release of the year last year. Truly,
- 1:06:34Speaker 5: I thought that was fantastic and that clown fucked me up.
- 1:06:38Speaker 5: That clown really messed me up. Man, Like I watched that.
- 1:06:41Speaker 5: I watched that first movie alone. It was a Saturday night.
- 1:06:45Speaker 5: I watched it alone in my apartment.
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: No one was here. It was just me and I
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: lights off.
- 1:06:51Speaker 5: Like in the perfect condition, and I that clown fucked
- 1:06:54Speaker 5: me up, dude, like I I'm not, I'm with you
- 1:06:57Speaker 5: on that.
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: It was. It was.
- 1:06:58Speaker 5: I couldn't sleep, Like I can't even tell you how
- 1:07:00Speaker 5: rare it is. I'm thirty eight years old, Like for
- 1:07:03Speaker 5: me to watch a scary movie and I've seen it listen,
- 1:07:05Speaker 5: like you you know, I'm not. I'm not like this
- 1:07:08Speaker 5: is my first rodeo. You know, I've seen a lot
- 1:07:10Speaker 5: of horror movies. And I couldn't sleep. I kept seeing
- 1:07:13Speaker 5: that clown everywhere. It was, it was, it was bad, dude,
- 1:07:16Speaker 5: what about you, Chuck, what's this?
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:07:19Speaker 4: I named right there with you guys, like, yeah, penny
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: Wise is creepy, uh, but yeah, that hell House clown.
- 1:07:26Speaker 4: I'm not afraid of clowns, but that thing terrified me. Dude.
- 1:07:29Speaker 5: There's one scene in the basem where he just like
- 1:07:30Speaker 5: looks over and like it just you knew it was
- 1:07:34Speaker 5: that movie. That movie moves with such precision. I can't
- 1:07:37Speaker 5: even tell you like it. It's it's surgical, the way
- 1:07:40Speaker 5: that movie operates. It's it's and I'm.
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: Sure somebody's gonna say that was barely a clown. I disagree.
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: That was just it was a dark clown.
- 1:07:48Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, very very very creepy, absolutely horrifying.
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah. I'm glad we were able to get
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: a House of a Thousand Corpses and hell House and
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: this episode of yeah oh yes. But one of the
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: notes that I'm here reading is that the idea of
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: the clowns was for them to be an alien race
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: of slugs that looked like our Earth clowns. Yeah, so
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: we are going back to the Pennywise thing where like
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: they have a form, they have an original form, and
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: then they My thing about that though, is like they
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: I don't think the ship would be so circus based
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: if they were slugs, you know what I mean? I
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: think clowns are what they are. I'm gonna go with that,
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: at least for me.
- 1:08:36Speaker 5: So was it like I remember hearing that also, but
- 1:08:38Speaker 5: was it? Do you think it was like a situation
- 1:08:39Speaker 5: where we understood that they were slugs and like there
- 1:08:44Speaker 5: was like a transformative scene or like like where was
- 1:08:47Speaker 5: you know, where was the slug understanding?
- 1:08:52Speaker 4: I'm not even sure. They just kind of brought it
- 1:08:54Speaker 4: up and they're like, yeah, so Bounds were supposed to
- 1:08:56Speaker 4: be an alien racest slugs and the face paint wasn't
- 1:08:59Speaker 4: actually like you know, makeup like we would use. It
- 1:09:02Speaker 4: was just their skin.
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: Yeah yeah yeah.
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: Then adds like a whole another layer to this movie. Okay,
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: slugs that came down, they're like, you know what, you
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: know what earth, we would work really well here if
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: we became giant clowns.
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: You know I haven't had in a while, big chew.
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: Yeah yeah yeah yeah.
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: So yeah, now we get into where I think this
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: movie really shines, which is when the clowns are in town.
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: You have that incredible clown march music kick in, see
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: all the clowns coming into town, and then from here
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: on this movie just becomes an endless gag, whether it's
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: Officer Marony just being pissed off at all the nine
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: one one calls, which is so funny to me, his
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: that character and that performance from John vernon Is. I said, Marony,
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: it's Mooney.
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah, I said, Maroni, it's Mooney.
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: That's my favorite performance of the whole movie, because his doubt,
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: like I'm it's just it's crazy to me. All these
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: people are calling and are like, oh, clowns are you
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: know in my house? And he's like, oh, the whole time,
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: because first he thinks, like you're washed by the Trenzy Brothers. Yeah,
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: and then he's just like, oh, everybody's losing their mind
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: and it's so good and I'm gonna bring up something
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: that we we might talk about later. But the when
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: I talked about one of two scenes that are genuinely terrifying,
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: the scene with his.
- 1:10:35Speaker 5: Death, Yeah, it's tough in nightmares. I think that's it's
- 1:10:38Speaker 5: tough for me at Yeah, one of the scenes that
- 1:10:40Speaker 5: really stands out. But also he it's like he he's
- 1:10:43Speaker 5: his performance unbelievable and like he's so perfect in that role.
- 1:10:46Speaker 5: Like he it really was like the perfect storm for
- 1:10:50Speaker 5: that role. But it's also like the dichotomy of like
- 1:10:53Speaker 5: the clowns being these zany, kooky characters and like him
- 1:10:57Speaker 5: being this absolutely like quintessential serious, like you don't fuck
- 1:11:03Speaker 5: with me right, and like that that like opposition was
- 1:11:05Speaker 5: like just the perfect match, you know what I mean.
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean even at the beginning of his introduction
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: when he brings in the two punks drinking in the park,
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: you know, on their way to college or on the
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: way to the college, he's so serious. I mean, even
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: that introduction of him when the guys walking across the
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: street drinking the I love the beer label.
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: Yeah, and he's like looking around like trying to play
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: it cool.
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: Yeah, he's like hiding it behind the bag across the
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: street because he knows, like that's pure jail time with
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: Moody there. It's so good and it makes his I
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: call it the death scene. It makes his scene so
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: terrifying because there's something like the music, the mood just changes,
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: it changes. And when Dave Hansen played by John Allen
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: Nelson is tracking the footsteps, you know, you have the
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: big sticker footsteps on the ground, which is which my
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: wife was like, I love that that which just reminds
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: me of fun how and he comes into that room
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: and he's like puppetized almost. It's so scary, and that's
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: the first time I get it. Up until this point,
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: people are being wrapped up in cocoons, they're being vacuumed up,
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: like all this crazy zany stuff is happening with these clowns.
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: When they say we just want to kill you, that
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: is terrifying.
- 1:12:25Speaker 5: Yeah, that's the line right there, one hundred percent. It's
- 1:12:28Speaker 5: it's that and it's also that the the for me
- 1:12:31Speaker 5: it's also the big top scene when Jumbo has the
- 1:12:35Speaker 5: hammer behind his head and he's like he's luring the
- 1:12:38Speaker 5: little girl in, you know what I mean. Yeah, that
- 1:12:41Speaker 5: to me is like super sorry. Yeah, you were going
- 1:12:43Speaker 5: to say two scenes. I'm sorry.
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: Yeah, no, you're good dude, that's the other scene.
- 1:12:47Speaker 5: It's just so sinister to me, you know, like that
- 1:12:49Speaker 5: that and also they're using those dark, ominous tones in
- 1:12:52Speaker 5: that scene where it's not like the fun kookie even
- 1:12:55Speaker 5: the clown mars like zany kind of vibe. It's very
- 1:12:57Speaker 5: sinister and like that that's what it tells you, like
- 1:13:00Speaker 5: shit's getting real, Like these clowns are not here fuck
- 1:13:03Speaker 5: around like they are.
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: Yeah, and the movie never like once the movie hits
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: these tones, there's a rapid tonal shift and it never
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: stays that way. We go right back to the fun
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: Zaney afterwards. But when he's luring in that little girl, immediately,
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: because of the context of the scene, I immediately am unsettled,
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: like all of a sudden, I'm not having fun anymore.
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: And you know, especially living like today's world is very
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: different than the world in eighty eight, you know what
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: I mean.
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: Like for sure, Yeah, that is.
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: Much scarier and a much more like unfortunate reality that
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: that sort of situation. And as a parent, I can
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: imagine that watching that scene is very.
- 1:13:50Speaker 5: You know, it's it's also like for me, and again
- 1:13:53Speaker 5: one of the reasons why I love this movie so
- 1:13:54Speaker 5: much being a child of the nineties, right like in
- 1:13:56Speaker 5: the nineties, and again I know this movie was wasn't
- 1:13:59Speaker 5: me in the nineties, but that isolation hard right for kids,
- 1:14:02Speaker 5: because in that scene, you know, the girl is kind
- 1:14:05Speaker 5: of staring out at Jumbo, but no one.
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: Else sees him.
- 1:14:08Speaker 5: So it's like you have this really interesting, you know
- 1:14:12Speaker 5: scene where it's just the girl in Jumbo, and like
- 1:14:15Speaker 5: in the nineties, you know, the girl was isolated completely
- 1:14:17Speaker 5: and like, you know, I'm sure if she told her parents,
- 1:14:20Speaker 5: Jumbo would be gone, right, Like It's the kind of
- 1:14:22Speaker 5: thing where, like, especially in the nineties, right, like that
- 1:14:24Speaker 5: trope of like kids feeling isolated, right and then going
- 1:14:29Speaker 5: to the people who can help, like their parents, the police,
- 1:14:32Speaker 5: and then them not either not believing them or that
- 1:14:34Speaker 5: you know, whatever the threat was disappears. That was like
- 1:14:37Speaker 5: a precursor to to that whole trope of the nineties.
- 1:14:40Speaker 5: You know that that idea of like the girl is
- 1:14:42Speaker 5: the only one that can see it, you know, and
- 1:14:44Speaker 5: like no one else saw it, and then she doesn't
- 1:14:47Speaker 5: end up going out there. The mom grabs her hand eventually,
- 1:14:49Speaker 5: but like there was a whole moment between the two
- 1:14:52Speaker 5: and it's just the two of them, you know.
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: Yeah, and this there's a couple of things that it
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: makes me think about. There is a Supernatural episode. I
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: don't know if you guys are fan of that show.
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: Not really, there is a Supernatural episode early on. I
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: think it's season one. My wife will probably text me
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: saying what season it is. But one of the spirits
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: or one of the demons that they fight in an
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: episode is a clown and only the kid can see
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: the clown, and the kids let the clown into the
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: house where the clown slaughters the family. So there's a
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: recurring theme. And then it also needs to think of it.
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: Chapter two. There's a scene in it chapter two, which
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: features two terrifying scenes with children, where penny Wise lures
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: a little girl under the bleachers and she has a
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: birthmark on her cheek which he uses to lure her in,
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: saying he can get rid of that. Oh, he has
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: no friends, She says, she has no friends he can
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: get rid of that. It's a very terrifying like scenario
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: that this movie unexpectedly brings up, you know what I mean.
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: And it's so out of left field. Same with the
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: Mooney death scene. It's so at a left field because
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: there's this, like I said, complete tonal shift where all
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: of a sudden, it's almost like we're in a different
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: movie totally.
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: Yeah, it's so scary.
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: And going back to the Mooney thing, when that demonic
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: voice comes out and just says, we just want to
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: kill you, it feels like we're in a different, like
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: I said, different.
- 1:16:16Speaker 5: Movie, and also like that no one's safe here, like
- 1:16:19Speaker 5: because Mooney was like the protector, right, he was supposed
- 1:16:22Speaker 5: to be like the enforcer, and it just it was
- 1:16:25Speaker 5: really powerful, and not just the deliverance, but like in
- 1:16:28Speaker 5: the message, right it's like we how easily we just
- 1:16:31Speaker 5: took out this this police officer, right, like how easily
- 1:16:34Speaker 5: I just handled and he did it then like the
- 1:16:36Speaker 5: way that he toys with him in the jail cell
- 1:16:38Speaker 5: scene right, like that to me was equally terrifying because
- 1:16:42Speaker 5: Mooney pulls out a gun and he does all these
- 1:16:44Speaker 5: things and the clown is just is just toying with him.
- 1:16:47Speaker 5: And you know when the hands pop back out and
- 1:16:49Speaker 5: he always his head turns around. It's it's really like
- 1:16:52Speaker 5: it's frightening, it's horrifying.
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: Yeah, and I'm sure there's something to the puppet thing,
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: the fact that he was so mooney, was so doubtful
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: of this ever happening, just for him to turn around
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: to be a vessel yeah them, you know what I mean?
- 1:17:05Speaker 5: Yeah, you know what else it is for me, Like
- 1:17:07Speaker 5: tell me if you guys agree, But like the slap
- 1:17:10Speaker 5: of the blood as it hits the floor, when he
- 1:17:13Speaker 5: just like goes and then that slap of the blood
- 1:17:16Speaker 5: like that, that is also equally as terrifying as like
- 1:17:20Speaker 5: the dialogue in that scene, and you know his flop
- 1:17:23Speaker 5: on the floor and all of that.
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: Yeah, that's and I couldn't wait to talk about these
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: scenes because when I think about this movie, and there's
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: so much fun that I think about, but these stand
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: out so heavily. And then in all of this, because
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: clowns entered the town, it becomes you have the pharmacy gag,
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: which is great, the farm. The the guy who works
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: at the pharmacy is just so lost. He's like uh
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: uh no. Yeah. Yeah, So you have sitting outside and
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: then in the pharmacy with them playing around with everything
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: on the shelves and tech.
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: It's just so like, and I'm talking about that too
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: in the commentaries, are like, we don't even know what
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: we were doing when he starts like piling everything up
- 1:18:05Speaker 2: on the counter, Like we had reached a level that
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: we like didn't even intend to and we're like, what
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: what what is he even doing?
- 1:18:11Speaker 4: Real?
- 1:18:11Speaker 5: We don't even know what the clown is doing, but
- 1:18:13Speaker 5: he's just like piling stuff on the counter.
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it's so it's so fun. And then you
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: have the knock on the door with the pizza box
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: where Shorty comes out of the pizza box. You know,
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: it's like it's just gag after gag. My wife's favorite
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: being when Shorty pulls up on the cart to the
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: motorcycle gang. Yeah outside of the Barye Big Bad Jojoe
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: coming into town. That the guy walks over and says, oh,
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: could I could I ride your bike? And he chakes
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: his head. He's like no, can I honk the horn?
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: He's like yeah, he destroys his bike.
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: What are you gonna do? Knock my block?
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: Off. Yeah. Yeah. But here's what's funny about the scene.
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: So my wife is always like, done the boxing. You know,
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: when he comes back when he smashes the bike, he
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: shoots up in the air, Hey, where do you go?
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: And then he comes back down he's got the gloves on.
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: We would always go because we thought it was we
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: thought he said bobbity boop when he's doing the thing.
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: When we were watching the movie, we had the subtitles on,
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: and he actually says put up your dukes. Yeah yeah, yeah,
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: which never noticed before. And it's so funny him with
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: the boxing gloves and he does the spin.
- 1:19:22Speaker 5: He's ready to f that's like his claim to fame. Man,
- 1:19:24Speaker 5: that's like Shorty's like big scene.
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, and then what are you gonna do? Knock
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: my block off and bow just uppercuts some knocks the
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: head right on. It's so great, dude.
- 1:19:33Speaker 5: It's also interesting like the names have changed over the years,
- 1:19:38Speaker 5: like and especially in the commentary, like I think they
- 1:19:40Speaker 5: mentioned that he started out as tiny I think, and
- 1:19:43Speaker 5: now he's like now he's Shorty for whatever the reasons
- 1:19:45Speaker 5: are that they've evolved and changed over the years, and
- 1:19:48Speaker 5: like even even like like they all had different names
- 1:19:53Speaker 5: at one point, like they've just kind of evolved, you know.
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: Yeah, and I don't. I'm really bad at knowing. So
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: I have what do we have up on our in
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: front of our TV? We have four of the Funko Pops.
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: We have Jumbo, we have Shorty, we have Spike Slim
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: I think it's Slim. Maybe is the other one that's
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: in front of our TV?
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: Fatso?
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: It wasn't Fatso. I have a Fatso. But he's sealed
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: somewhere in here, somewhere in this room. He's sealed. But
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: the Funko Pop line of this was so cool. They
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: did the they did the toilet clown, the popcorn or
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: the popcorn clown, which I do want to talk about
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: that scene because we have the payoff of the popcorn
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: when she goes home, gets in the shower, and you
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: just have the laundry basket begins shaking and we see
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: that the popcorn is in fact like little clowns.
- 1:20:44Speaker 5: I always love the boots she's wearing after she gets
- 1:20:46Speaker 5: dressed and then she comes out of the shower and
- 1:20:48Speaker 5: she puts on these like massive fur boots.
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: You know, I'm talking about what it is about its
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: cracks me up.
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, dude, it's such a cool scene too.
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: I mean this movie is is an absolute love letter
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: to the better era of practical effects totally and doing
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: practical monsters. And dude, I'm telling you, it looks so
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: much better than any CGI you could possibly muster up nowadays. Agree,
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: And I'll stand by that ten of the time, because
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: there's like a certain charm to it. And it's almost
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: like when I was watching a movie, I was kind
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: of looking for the strings and stuff and I just
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: couldn't see them. And obviously the Kyoto brothers are this
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: is what they do. They're masters at this craft. Every
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: design is so cool, especially like the one that comes
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: out of the toilet.
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: Yeah, well that's that's exactly it.
- 1:21:40Speaker 5: Like you said, it's the charm, right, And like this
- 1:21:42Speaker 5: thing was meant to be a late night creature feature,
- 1:21:45Speaker 5: you know, extravaganza, and it was meant to be watched
- 1:21:48Speaker 5: with your friends once you watch with popcorn. It meant
- 1:21:51Speaker 5: to be watched, you know, late at night, lights off
- 1:21:53Speaker 5: and all this stuff, and you know, CGI just wouldn't work.
- 1:21:56Speaker 5: It just wouldn't work with a movie like this. And
- 1:21:58Speaker 5: so like the practical effects are part of what make
- 1:22:01Speaker 5: this movie so special. Like this movie is special, it
- 1:22:05Speaker 5: really is, and like it is such a unique, unique thing,
- 1:22:09Speaker 5: and like I said before, it really is its own genre.
- 1:22:12Speaker 5: And like this movie was a perfect storm of events
- 1:22:15Speaker 5: like this, this cannot be replicated, you know what I mean?
- 1:22:17Speaker 5: Like this this, there are other perfect storms that happened,
- 1:22:21Speaker 5: like The Substance, which was beyond phenomenal, right, ten out
- 1:22:25Speaker 5: of ten, my favorite movie of the year by far,
- 1:22:27Speaker 5: and like that that it's almost seemingly impossible that a
- 1:22:30Speaker 5: movie like that can come out today, but it did,
- 1:22:32Speaker 5: and it worked and it won awards and all this
- 1:22:33Speaker 5: stuffs same thing with Killer Clowns, right that that movie
- 1:22:36Speaker 5: should not work, yet it does and it should not.
- 1:22:39Speaker 5: It just everything came together to create this incredible, you know,
- 1:22:44Speaker 5: genre piece that has just stood the test of time
- 1:22:47Speaker 5: and has found an audience over so many years. And
- 1:22:51Speaker 5: it's it's just fascinating, it really is. And those practical
- 1:22:55Speaker 5: effects have as big of a role in that as anything,
- 1:22:57Speaker 5: you know.
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: Yeah, And I think a big standout for the effects
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: is the shadow puppet scene at the bus stop where
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: that that officer Dave Hanson and my tobacco roll up
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: to which is so. First of all, sitting at a
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: bus stop and looking to your left and seeing a
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: clown is terrifying in itself. But the shadow puppet scene
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: is so cool and I have no idea how they
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: did that. I don't know was that mentioned at all?
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: They did mention it. I mean, I have it on
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: my notes here.
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: Because I was trying to pick up on if it
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: was stop motion, if it was like a rear projection.
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: I thought like, hey, maybe they had shot it on
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: a plate and then rear projected it on, because clearly,
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: you know it's doing unrealistic shadow puppet designs. But it's
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: like such a fun effect no matter how they did it,
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: it's just it's so cool and it works, and when
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: it becomes the t Rex, it's so it just swallows
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: up everybody. Yeah, yeah, it's so good. And it's just
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: that variety of effects that are used here that are
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: so great. Another scene that is very scary to me
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: is the giant vacuum when we're on the main strip
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: of the town. Oh yeah, and they're just rolling down
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: and sucking up all these you know, cocoons and chuck.
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: You mentioned how it was built using a wooden facade
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: around a pickup truck.
- 1:24:18Speaker 4: Yeah, so they said they just took a pickup truck,
- 1:24:20Speaker 4: built a wooden facade around it, and then just added
- 1:24:22Speaker 4: small items for like the dials and stuff like that
- 1:24:25Speaker 4: by using bowls and trash can lids.
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: Creative, man, Definitely, they don't make.
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: Movies like that anymore. You know. I feel like movies
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: the lower budgets to you have to get creative and
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: do stuff like this, you know what I mean.
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: Yeah, you have to.
- 1:24:41Speaker 5: I love when the guy tries to get away and
- 1:24:43Speaker 5: they're just like, nope, the guy with like the guy
- 1:24:45Speaker 5: with like the awkwardly cut hair like just turns like
- 1:24:48Speaker 5: turns her out.
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: That's such. That guy cracks me up. He's got like
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: the weird haircut I guess seventies, like like porno like
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: disco kind of haircut.
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, but I want to talk about one of
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: my favorite moments. And also I keep bringing up my
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: wife because she loves this movie and I love talking
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: about her stuff that she loves. But getting towards the end,
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: the amusement park scene, which was shot on Santa Cruz,
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: was a shot on the amusement peer in Santa Cruz.
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: Obviously lost Boys Us. Those are the two big ones
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: that come to mind for me, Lost Boys especially, but
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: us and us, you know, was that was a purposely
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: purposeful call back to the Lost Boys. Jordan Peele has
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: talked about many times how it felt shooting on that
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: pier knowing that the Lost Boys shot there. But one
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: of my favorite scenes, which is the clown car rolls
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: up and they the security guard is just watching all
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: of these clowns get out of this car, which is
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: such a great gag, like you had to bring that up. Eventually.
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: There had to be a clown car, It just had to.
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: They all climb out, and then you have the incredible
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: line delivery of what are you going to do with
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: those pies? Boys? And then we learned what the pies are,
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: and it's pretty sinister, man, because they go to the
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: drench him in pies, which I would love to know
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: the number of how many pies this guy got thrown
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: on him.
- 1:26:22Speaker 2: I don't take also, if if I'm not mistaken, oh man.
- 1:26:29Speaker 4: And those were actual pies too that they used.
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: It's so many pies, dude, It's just I wish I counted.
- 1:26:35Speaker 4: It was like cherry pies, lemon pies, like all of it, and.
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: I think I read I read that they wanted to
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: use I don't know his names.
- 1:26:43Speaker 2: Super sales, super sales.
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: Yeah, but they didn't want to fly him out right,
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: they didn't want.
- 1:26:48Speaker 2: To pay for it.
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: Yeah, but they littered the sky in pies, which if
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: you are ever at any of my family parties with
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: my in laws, you're gonna hear what are you going
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: to do with those pies? Boys? At least once from
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: some at some point. But we learned what those pies are,
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: and they're acid, and what you get is a pile
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: of human pie that Shorty places the massive cherry.
- 1:27:11Speaker 5: On y right, Like that scene is amazing and like
- 1:27:16Speaker 5: it's it's iconic, it really is, and like that that
- 1:27:18Speaker 5: that cherry on top is perfect. But the music makes
- 1:27:22Speaker 5: that scene for me, like that, as soon as that
- 1:27:24Speaker 5: music kicks in and it's like you know again, it's
- 1:27:26Speaker 5: like one of those things. It's like a perfect storm,
- 1:27:28Speaker 5: right that, as soon as that music kicks in and
- 1:27:30Speaker 5: it like it's it was meant to be, you know
- 1:27:32Speaker 5: what I mean?
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, music, It's such a fun thing, man, because
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: as I dive more into scores and I'm listening to them,
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: I mean I listened to scores for movies and TV
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: shows from composers that I love that I've never seen
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: just because I love, you know, the music. We were
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: talking about some scores the other night because we watched
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: David Lynch's The Elephant Man, which you have the AudioGo
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: for strings for that, also known in Platoon. Like the
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: a lot of scores transcend and the music they go
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: bigger into popcorn drum mean, Jurassic anything by Hans Zimmer,
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: John Williams, anything, those guys do, James Horner, you know,
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: they transcend and Killer Clowns. Music needs to be it
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: needs to fit the movie, but I feel like it
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: also needs to be able to stand on its own.
- 1:28:17Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, which is why.
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: Tracks like Time from Interstellar work so well in the
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: context of the movie but worked as a beautiful piece
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: of music when separated from it. And Killer Clowns, in
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: my opinion, listening to the score does that. It works.
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: It's so fun on its own.
- 1:28:36Speaker 5: That clown march like kick in is just incredible and
- 1:28:39Speaker 5: like it was the perfect spot to kick it in,
- 1:28:41Speaker 5: and it's just it's also like, again, as serious as
- 1:28:44Speaker 5: the movie is, like right on the heels of that
- 1:28:47Speaker 5: that movie scene, right, we have another zany kick in
- 1:28:50Speaker 5: of the score with a zany cherry on tops. Like
- 1:28:53Speaker 5: it's just it's They do a phenomenal job of balancing
- 1:28:57Speaker 5: the two, you know, like if the serious and the
- 1:28:59Speaker 5: fun the zany and it's it's yeah yeah.
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: And I bring this up because just the other day
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: I got an order from Waxwork Records of the Wayne
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: Belt Texas Chainsaw Massacre score, which is the first time
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: it was ever isolated and remastered, and I was listening
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: to that. I was actually sitting in this room exactly
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: how you guys see me now, this is. I was
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: sitting in the room like this, and I had it
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: on my CD player system is much better than my
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: record system, so I prefer CD in a lot of cases.
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: And it was creeping me out, and I was like, God,
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: I'm listening to it, and I'm like, this is so
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: scary on its own, but holy hell, it works so
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: well with the movie, like so well, and I feel
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: like I can play any of the tracks, any of
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: Jamasari's tracks from this score and just have fun with it,
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: like dude, the Clomworth Dead.
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's perfect, you know what I mean.
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: There's been a million times since we're recording this that
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: in my head I might a thought because this is playing.
- 1:29:57Speaker 5: You know, like you think about like it's perfect for
- 1:30:00Speaker 5: this movie and had it not been clown March, this
- 1:30:04Speaker 5: movie might not be what it is. Again, it's like that.
- 1:30:06Speaker 5: It's that scene is so perfect because of the kick in, right,
- 1:30:09Speaker 5: because in my opinion, because of the kick and of
- 1:30:10Speaker 5: the music. So like it just there's so many little
- 1:30:15Speaker 5: things that create a perfection like killer clowns. And to me,
- 1:30:20Speaker 5: this movie, you know, at the heart of it is
- 1:30:21Speaker 5: the practical fact the music and even you know, the
- 1:30:24Speaker 5: dialogue too, it's all it all comes together.
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: Well, if you take that scene where the clown March
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: pops in and you replace that with like very serious,
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: scary music, it'll change that tone drastically, which actually kind
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: of an interesting experiment. I would love to like find
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: another score that's much more serious and put it over
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: some scenes in this movie and see how it plays out,
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: just to be you know, just to see just.
- 1:30:47Speaker 5: Or or do like zany music over like the Mooney Kill,
- 1:30:51Speaker 5: you know, and see, yeah, how.
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: That plays out. I'm not that technologically savy. I'm sure
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: somebody out there has done it in some way. I'll
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: try to I'll try to find it.
- 1:31:00Speaker 5: Also, something I learned in this movie, and I guess
- 1:31:03Speaker 5: it's because the cocoons, but they were credited with a
- 1:31:07Speaker 5: much higher death count than any of the Friday at
- 1:31:09Speaker 5: Thirteen's anything along those lines, which I thought was pretty cool.
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: Do you remember did they say a specific count.
- 1:31:14Speaker 2: They didn't say a number.
- 1:31:15Speaker 5: No, but like because there were so many cocoons and
- 1:31:19Speaker 5: so many deaths in the Warehouse of Cocoons that uh yeah,
- 1:31:23Speaker 5: they were actually credited with more more deaths.
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: That's it. Did I wonder if the Dead Meat ever
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: do a kill count for this movie. I wonder. I'm
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: not sure, say, oh they did, Okay, so according to
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: the Dead Meat wiki, they did sixteen men, six women,
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: four clowns, and fourteen unknown cocoon victims, so I think
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: clearly they were off.
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: I love that fourteen unknown cocoon victims.
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's it. And I don't know how
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: they got that, but they did that back in twenty eighteen,
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: because I'm sure the death count for this movie is
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: well over one hundred, yeah, well over a hundred. So
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: at this point in the movie, obviously we ran out
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: to the end and this is where we get into there. Well,
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: now I think at this point we figured out how
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: to kill them, right they figured out obviously, shoot him
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: in the nose and a confetti explode, which is really cool.
- 1:32:17Speaker 5: Also, by the way, the same animation in Earnest. It's
- 1:32:21Speaker 5: that that's the same animation as when the trolls get
- 1:32:24Speaker 5: you know, when when they milk the trolls or whatever
- 1:32:27Speaker 5: it is, they use the same animation.
- 1:32:29Speaker 2: That's the same thing, dude.
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: You just unlocked like a nostalgic memory for me.
- 1:32:35Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, same thing, man. And even like some of
- 1:32:38Speaker 5: the effects, like if you remember when trantor finally, like
- 1:32:43Speaker 5: towards the end, he's like in the tree and he's like,
- 1:32:46Speaker 5: you know, he's like trying to like harness a higher power.
- 1:32:49Speaker 5: They are these little ghosts that that are like floating around.
- 1:32:52Speaker 5: It's very similar to the things that they do in clowns.
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: Damn, dude, I need to get off this podcast and
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: just go watch them. You just unlocked like a core
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: memory of.
- 1:33:03Speaker 2: Two of my favorites. Man.
- 1:33:04Speaker 5: I'm a big Ernest guy, big time. I have a
- 1:33:07Speaker 5: I have a Ernest like a limited limited edition print.
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: The artist is not. His name's not coming to me, great, dude,
- 1:33:15Speaker 2: But I have a framed Arnest print in my office.
- 1:33:18Speaker 2: I love it, dude.
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: That's so cool, dude. This whole scene inside of the
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: tent or inside of the ship is so cool. Like
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: we said earlier, the another door, another door. The doors
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: just get smaller and smaller and smaller. It's so good.
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: All the little gags droughout this are so much fun.
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: But my favorite of this is the ending when we
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: get into the bigger room I call it a big room.
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: We get into the big room and we have eventually
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: the introduction of clown Zilla, which is, you know, I
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: think one of the biggest effects in the movie. There
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: you go, Robbie's currently according a drawing of clown Zilla.
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: You want to talk about kind of some production notes
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: on clown Zilla.
- 1:34:04Speaker 4: Yeah, So, originally they were going to shoot clown Zilla
- 1:34:06Speaker 4: in the style of stop motion, but unfortunately they ran
- 1:34:10Speaker 4: out of the funds and the time to do that.
- 1:34:13Speaker 4: So what they opted for was to shoot it in
- 1:34:15Speaker 4: the style of Godzilla, So a person in a costume
- 1:34:19Speaker 4: set out on the stage with smaller objects and stuff
- 1:34:21Speaker 4: like that. And Charles Kyoto was actually the one to
- 1:34:24Speaker 4: don the clown Zilla outfit.
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: It's so cool, such a cool effect, dude. Yeah, it's
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: even when it picks up the ice cream truck and
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: tosses it. It's so cool. Man. There's something about that.
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: May are the guy in a rubber suit miniature set
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: that is timeless.
- 1:34:42Speaker 5: Totally, and it's like it's Final Boss, dude, like they
- 1:34:45Speaker 5: you wonder how they're gonna top like the amazingness that
- 1:34:48Speaker 5: that preceded, you know, clown Zilla, and then they just
- 1:34:51Speaker 5: I mean it's it's like the perfect final Boss, you know.
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, no, it is. It's very video game yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: because you have you know, they're in this room. They're
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: surrounded by all the clowns and I mean there's clowns with.
- 1:35:03Speaker 5: Like there it's only like a baseball bat with and
- 1:35:05Speaker 5: they have them on lock like they they're surrounding them
- 1:35:08Speaker 5: like they're not going anywhere, they're not getting out of this.
- 1:35:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: My favorite my wife brought up is all the clowns
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: have some sort of like melee weapon and then in
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: the background there's one clown with a gun that he's
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: got the clown gun. There's just one cloud with a
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: gun pointing at them. It's like they just pull the trigger. Bro,
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: that movie is over.
- 1:35:28Speaker 2: Like like a handgun, like an a like.
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: Their clown like their gun. Yeah, but it's like everybody
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: has a melee weapon. There's just one just with a gun.
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: All right, I got this, don't worry, I brought the
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: real weapon.
- 1:35:42Speaker 2: Take like in uh, it's like in uh Halloween Kills
- 1:35:48Speaker 2: or how is it kills?
- 1:35:49Speaker 5: At the end, like I think one of them has
- 1:35:51Speaker 5: a gun and they're all like they're all holding like
- 1:35:52Speaker 5: the by four. It's like, oh, what should we do now?
- 1:35:55Speaker 5: And they all start like batting him, and the one
- 1:35:56Speaker 5: girl's like pointing the gun.
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: Oh that's so good man. No, I love this whole
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: end scene and chuck if you want to talk about
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: the explosion for the Clownzilla as well.
- 1:36:12Speaker 4: Yeah, so when Clownzilla throws the ice cream truck and
- 1:36:14Speaker 4: is like that big explosion, it was done by a
- 1:36:16Speaker 4: guy called well, guy named Joe viscosol I hope I
- 1:36:21Speaker 4: said that correctly, and he's was an Academy Award winner
- 1:36:25Speaker 4: for Visual effects, so he worked on things like Independence Day,
- 1:36:29Speaker 4: The Blob nineteen eighty eight. So a nice little callback.
- 1:36:32Speaker 4: What inspired the Kyota brothers to do this movie, Ghostbusters, Texas,
- 1:36:36Speaker 4: Chainsaw three, Terminator two, and Star Wars four A New
- 1:36:40Speaker 4: Hope damn.
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: I mean, this is the guy responsible for the incredible
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: like white House miniatures in Independence Day. YEAHI is incredible.
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: I mean when I think of miniatures, I think Miniager
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: says this stuff. The first thing my brain goes to
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: is Independence Day and that wide shot of the white
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: House totally.
- 1:37:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:37:00Speaker 4: Yeah, it's just so iconic.
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: So good, dude, so good. And then the Blob, which
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: it's actually really funny that the Blob remake came out
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: the same year as Killer Clowns. It's another The Blob
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: is another incredible piece of practical effects from the Ages,
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: you know what I mean. Yeah, and one of the
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: best remakes ever.
- 1:37:20Speaker 2: It might be the best remake ever to be honest.
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I think you might be right.
- 1:37:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I would probably It's or the Thing. It's yeah, yeah,
- 1:37:27Speaker 2: the things up there.
- 1:37:27Speaker 5: It's a movie that for me, I mean, I the
- 1:37:30Speaker 5: Thing is incredible, like I but I I'm for whatever reason,
- 1:37:32Speaker 5: like I'm a little impartial to the Blob. I don't know,
- 1:37:35Speaker 5: Like again, I think it's like that like that child,
- 1:37:40Speaker 5: that kid Horror, like one Kid eats it in that movie,
- 1:37:43Speaker 5: and like, it's just I don't know what it is, man,
- 1:37:45Speaker 5: it's just that those movies that like that like attack
- 1:37:48Speaker 5: kids and like, you know, you don't feel like safe.
- 1:37:51Speaker 2: I don't know, it just it just hits me in
- 1:37:53Speaker 2: the right ways.
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: I remember before seeing the Blob, the eighty eight Blob,
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: seeing that image with the hand out and thinking, like
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: in my head, I never you never thought like it's
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: a kid, and then when you see the movie, you
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: realize it's a kid, you know.
- 1:38:07Speaker 2: What I mean.
- 1:38:08Speaker 5: Yeah, Yeah, it's just I fucking love that movie so much.
- 1:38:11Speaker 5: Like Crazy, It's hard to like really pinpoint where I
- 1:38:14Speaker 5: put it in like my all time list, but it
- 1:38:17Speaker 5: that movie is like in my pantheon of greats, no
- 1:38:20Speaker 5: question about it.
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, So we're rounding out to the last note.
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: There's only eighty eight minute movie, so there's not a
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: whole bunch you know going on. We got we don't
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: have as many notes as we did our House of
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: a Thousand Corpses. But Chuck, do you want to talk
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: about the last note that we have here about Dave.
- 1:38:38Speaker 4: Yeah. So, in the original script or the original green
- 1:38:42Speaker 4: end of the film, Dave actually didn't even survive the
- 1:38:45Speaker 4: incident with clown Zilla. He was supposed to be dead,
- 1:38:48Speaker 4: but an executive producer came in and said that he
- 1:38:50Speaker 4: wanted to a more upbeat end into the film, so
- 1:38:54Speaker 4: after production wrapped up, they ended up reshooting this scene
- 1:38:59Speaker 4: just to add it to the film.
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: It is like a very I mean, it's one of
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: those endings where just like everything's happy, you know what
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: I mean. You got the Trenzi brothers coming out.
- 1:39:08Speaker 5: Not necessarily yeah, not yeah, at the very end, are
- 1:39:12Speaker 5: we not at the go ahead?
- 1:39:14Speaker 2: At the little twist? Yeah, I mean we have that pie,
- 1:39:17Speaker 2: that twist pie ending at the very end, which.
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: I asked my wife, I'm like, I'm like, right when
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: the movie cuts and it goes into credits, I'm like,
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: did they melt?
- 1:39:24Speaker 2: Did they die?
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: Right?
- 1:39:25Speaker 5: And that's like another another like interesting piece about this
- 1:39:29Speaker 5: movie is like you don't know what is it? Like,
- 1:39:31Speaker 5: you don't know what happens, Like what are they gonna melt?
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: You know?
- 1:39:35Speaker 2: And it's like it just open ended like that, which
- 1:39:36Speaker 2: is a lot of fun.
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: Well, I wonder like, now that the ship exploded, does
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: it like take away the powers of.
- 1:39:41Speaker 2: The pie exactly.
- 1:39:42Speaker 5: There's so many little things you could think about with
- 1:39:44Speaker 5: that scene. And you know what, I don't even think
- 1:39:46Speaker 5: the Kyoda Brothers.
- 1:39:47Speaker 3: No.
- 1:39:47Speaker 5: I think it was just meant to be like open ended,
- 1:39:50Speaker 5: like that we want pies to come down, and then
- 1:39:52Speaker 5: that is what it is. Let people kind of have
- 1:39:53Speaker 5: their fun.
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I agree. Look this movie, man, I mm hmm.
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: I think when I when I again, we talked about
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: this before, Cult Classic, When I when my brain when
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: somebody says to me, hey, cold classic movie, I immediately
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: go to a rocky horror picture show. But I think
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: very close, like secondary is Killer Clowns from Outer Space.
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: I it's amazing that there's a video game that's.
- 1:40:22Speaker 2: I still haven't played that. I gotta play it.
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: I haven't played it either. It's just amazing that it exists. Docked.
- 1:40:28Speaker 4: When that trailer dropped for that, I was like, there's
- 1:40:30Speaker 4: no way, hell we're getting this read.
- 1:40:32Speaker 5: My Uh do you guys follow Shane Murphy theater Creeps?
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: I do?
- 1:40:37Speaker 2: Yes, Yeah, he's my tattoo artist.
- 1:40:39Speaker 5: Okay and great dude, and uh you know he's doing
- 1:40:42Speaker 5: his thing and he was playing at Big Time. He
- 1:40:45Speaker 5: said it was great and so uh, but I never
- 1:40:48Speaker 5: really got into it. But you know, on his recommendation,
- 1:40:50Speaker 5: I wanted to try it.
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: I remember thinking about for a bit, Oh did you okay,
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: so what did you think?
- 1:40:56Speaker 4: It's it's fun. I didn't play online. I just played
- 1:40:58Speaker 4: him against the bots. Okay, it's okay. It's fun playing
- 1:41:02Speaker 4: as the clowns and trying to kill the people.
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: Because I know we have like Friday the thirteenth kicked
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: off this multiplayer horror game. Then you have Texas Chainsaw Masker. Yeah,
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: I thought it was gonna be I was like, oh,
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: just you know, seems to be just part of that
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: that trend. But I've heard really great things about it,
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: you know, and I've heard that it keeps getting updates,
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: so it keeps getting better and better.
- 1:41:23Speaker 2: And better for sure.
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: But it's incredible to even say that this has a
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: video game, you know. And as the years goes on,
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: like like when Spirit Halloween opens this year, twenty twenty five,
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: guess what, it's still gonna be little of a killer
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: clown stuff. And I bet you there will be an
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: exclusive funk Go. There will probably be another premium collectible
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: like the Popcorn Gun, like the laser Gun. They'll figure
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: out something to put out. They always have the masks
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: which look incredible. Trigger Treat Studios always doing cool stuff
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: with killer clowns. It is alive and in the modern
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: days like Geist, it's so incredibly real. Event Screen Factory
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: putting out of four K last year was phenomenal. We
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: even got we got a standard release of it, or
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: the Collector's edition release, and then we got a steel
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: book as well, which.
- 1:42:11Speaker 2: I'm still brought up.
- 1:42:13Speaker 5: I'm still hoping, hoping upon hope that we get some
- 1:42:16Speaker 5: kind of a hard box edition at some point. It's
- 1:42:18Speaker 5: gotta happen, man, Like, come on.
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm a little shocked to error it and do
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: that hard box the same tame, you know, but I'm
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: sure somebody at some point it's probably gonna be overseass
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: working on some sort of deluxe Yeah.
- 1:42:31Speaker 5: I mean if we get it, if we get an
- 1:42:33Speaker 5: arrow UK box at like, I'm all for it, Like
- 1:42:36Speaker 5: let's do it, you know.
- 1:42:37Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, absolutely, man, I think that would be so
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: cool with the hard outer box. Yeah yeah, yeah, give me,
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: give me everything.
- 1:42:44Speaker 5: Yeah, And like I I don't even it'll be the
- 1:42:47Speaker 5: same four K transfer from Scream.
- 1:42:48Speaker 2: It'll look great. And just to be honest with.
- 1:42:51Speaker 5: You, like I I'm I'm sure the Kyoto Brothers would
- 1:42:55Speaker 5: do a new interview, Like I don't know why they wouldn't,
- 1:42:57Speaker 5: but like, just give me the four K give me.
- 1:43:00Speaker 5: Really at this point, it's like I've seen the movie
- 1:43:03Speaker 5: so many times. I've seen so many extras on the movie.
- 1:43:06Speaker 5: I just want a collector's piece, you know. It's more
- 1:43:08Speaker 5: about just having the collector's piece for me, you know
- 1:43:10Speaker 5: what I mean? Yeah, and having the packaging, and I know,
- 1:43:13Speaker 5: say what you want about packaging, I'm a sucker, Like
- 1:43:16Speaker 5: I just want that horror box, you know.
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: Yeah. No, definitely as physical media nerds.
- 1:43:20Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah yeah.
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: And I think this is a great commentary track. I
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: definitely think if you're a fan of Killer Clowns from
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: Otter Space, you know you need to visit this just
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: just to get the energy and the excitement from the
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: Kyoto brothers. Absolutely an immense passion project for them, and
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: it's incredible that it exists in the form it does
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: and still relevant to this day. So before we close
- 1:43:42Speaker 1: this out, I do want to bring this up. We
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: talked briefly about a sequel that we don't want or
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: I don't want. I said, I don't want what do
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: you guys think, Because this is still an active conversation,
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: I actually found a bloody disgusting article from twenty twenty
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: four talking about some rumors. Again of I think it
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: was supposed to be like a streaming exclusive. It was
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: like shutter or screaming. Somebody was working with them, but
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: nothing had come to fruition. If tomorrow an announcement came out,
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: Yoda Brothers are down, We're getting a sequel, what would
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: you guys.
- 1:44:18Speaker 2: Think, Jock, you want to go first?
- 1:44:21Speaker 4: Oh that's tough, because I mean, it would be cool
- 1:44:25Speaker 4: to have, you know, more clowns. But then again, I
- 1:44:28Speaker 4: don't know if I would really want it to be
- 1:44:30Speaker 4: brought back. Like they said, they're actively still trying to
- 1:44:33Speaker 4: pitch the idea to studios and stuff like that, but
- 1:44:39Speaker 4: just nothing came of fruition to it. But maybe, yeah,
- 1:44:44Speaker 4: I don't I don't know how I would feel about
- 1:44:45Speaker 4: a sequel, Like I wouldn't be opposed to it, but
- 1:44:48Speaker 4: I don't know if I would really want it.
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: I think I heard something about the Kyoto Brothers were
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: not interesting and we're not interested in directing. They were
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: interested in being a part of it, and that to
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: me would be like the nail in the coffin for me,
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: you know, But Robbie, what would you think?
- 1:45:06Speaker 5: Yeah, it's it's a tough question first first instinct, like
- 1:45:11Speaker 5: I'm on board, but if they weren't directing it, I'd
- 1:45:14Speaker 5: probably say no, I'd want I'd want it to be
- 1:45:18Speaker 5: a new passion project for them. And I know Chuckley
- 1:45:20Speaker 5: had mentioned, I've read everywhere that they've pitched this thing
- 1:45:23Speaker 5: they wanted to happen. They're on board for it, and
- 1:45:26Speaker 5: they have like a laundry list of new clown gags
- 1:45:29Speaker 5: and new circus gags for a sequel, and they have
- 1:45:32Speaker 5: they have it ready to go and all that. So
- 1:45:34Speaker 5: I don't know what the hold up is. Maybe it
- 1:45:36Speaker 5: is the directorial ship or whatever it is that they
- 1:45:39Speaker 5: you know, that they either want or don't want. But
- 1:45:43Speaker 5: I would be totally on board for it if we
- 1:45:45Speaker 5: under the right circumstances, if they were directing, if it
- 1:45:48Speaker 5: was a three of them back practical effects, no CGI,
- 1:45:51Speaker 5: of course, and the studio wouldn't be okay with that.
- 1:45:53Speaker 5: There had to be some CGI, which I don't. I
- 1:45:56Speaker 5: think it would be okay, but you know, and then
- 1:46:00Speaker 5: again like listen, I'm I'm a big hocus Pocus fan,
- 1:46:03Speaker 5: and like that second one was so terrible, like it
- 1:46:08Speaker 5: in so many ways, like just it it was really
- 1:46:11Speaker 5: difficult to watch. So I wouldn't want that same thing
- 1:46:15Speaker 5: to happen with clowns. Ultimately, I would say, yeah, I'm
- 1:46:17Speaker 5: on board, final answer, but I just I would want
- 1:46:19Speaker 5: them involved, you know.
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: I think I would be scared of like a critics
- 1:46:22Speaker 1: attack situation.
- 1:46:23Speaker 2: You know, I didn't see that one.
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: That was the fifth one that was yeah, don't avoid it.
- 1:46:28Speaker 2: Okay, Yah, it's very bad.
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: I don't know. I mean, do I think it's ever
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: actually gonna happen. No, Every news story that I read
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: about is conflicting another news story in some way, you
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: know what I mean.
- 1:46:40Speaker 5: And I will say there there are so many things
- 1:46:42Speaker 5: that are getting treatments these days, like so many things
- 1:46:44Speaker 5: that are getting remade, and so many like bizarre sequels
- 1:46:47Speaker 5: like Gremlins, like like you know, like it's it's actually
- 1:46:51Speaker 5: pretty interesting what's happening in the world of horror, you know.
- 1:46:54Speaker 5: So I don't know, I like, I think it could happen.
- 1:46:57Speaker 2: I don't. I wouldn't say it's the craziest thing.
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: As a recording this yesterday news broke that the Texas
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: Chainsaw Masker rights are being shopped and Glenn Powe is
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: interested in starring in a in a Texas Chainsaw Masker movie.
- 1:47:10Speaker 2: There you go.
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: It's crazy, man, there's so much happening, which I'm not
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: as what do you call it on that news because
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: you know, Rene Zellweger and Matthew McConaughey did star in
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: a Texas Chainsaw Masker movie that they want their name
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: removed from. That they forget from. But we forget sometimes
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: that these franchises were a bit massive kickoff points for
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: massive stars, you know what I mean. Yeah, yeah, back
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: in the day. But I don't think they hold the
- 1:47:35Speaker 1: same resonance anymore. But yeah, I don't know. I mean,
- 1:47:40Speaker 1: I think it would be cool if it was like
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: if you had like somebody like shut her behind it,
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: you know, like a production company that like actually or like,
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: can you mention an a twenty four Killer Clowns movie?
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: There's like some blot twists at the end.
- 1:47:55Speaker 2: Yeah, like Coralie Fargate to direct it.
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: Oh my god, dude, that's actually like her dream projects.
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: She's like, yeah, right, a substance so I can direct
- 1:48:03Speaker 1: the remake of Killer Clowns from out her space. All practical.
- 1:48:06Speaker 2: We have like some young like hotty like like drink
- 1:48:10Speaker 2: something and starts turning into like a clown.
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: Yeah, Jumbo is Mark Marcot quality.
- 1:48:15Speaker 2: Starring in Killer Clowns too, Margaret quality.
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: Well, guys, thanks for thanks for hanging out. Robbie dude,
- 1:48:24Speaker 1: thank you so much for being a part of this.
- 1:48:27Speaker 1: You're dude. One of the things I'm most stoked about is,
- 1:48:30Speaker 1: you know, with this first season, we only have two
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: episodes left, and we've been very lucky to get guests
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: of people who are incredibly passionate about the movies that
- 1:48:40Speaker 1: we're talking about, and it's it drives this so much. Man.
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: Last episode we had Brian from Last Movie standing on
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: and he, like the He is the reason that episode
- 1:48:53Speaker 1: came out so great, you know what I mean that
- 1:48:56Speaker 1: we were all able to chat about it and really
- 1:48:59Speaker 1: kind of show that every guest we've had on has
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: been incredible man, and your love for this movie, you know,
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: has driven this conversation so forward. YEA.
- 1:49:08Speaker 5: Let me just say, from the moment you guys put
- 1:49:10Speaker 5: this feeler out there, it was something I wanted to do,
- 1:49:13Speaker 5: and you know, for those of you that are watching this, like,
- 1:49:17Speaker 5: thank you guys for hanging out, Thank you guys for watching.

- 1:51:31Speaker 1: episodes left of season one of the show, so this
- 1:51:35Speaker 1: is coming out April first, as of if you're listening
- 1:51:37Speaker 1: to us on day one, this is April first. We
- 1:51:40Speaker 1: are covering Mary Lambert's Pet Cemetery two for the month
- 1:51:44Speaker 1: of May, which is a very underrated sequel in my opinion,
- 1:51:47Speaker 1: which a lot of check it out. Yeah, a lot
- 1:51:50Speaker 1: of people don't even know. Is directed by the director
- 1:51:52Speaker 1: of the first Pet Cemetery, so fun fact for everybody listening.
- 1:51:55Speaker 1: And then we are rounding out season one in June
- 1:51:59Speaker 1: with everybody from Tales from the Shelf as we talk
- 1:52:01Speaker 1: about the Burning, one of the most underrated slashers of
- 1:52:05Speaker 1: the eighties, one of the best campground slashers. That would
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: be official wrap up for season one. We are though,
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: doing a summer special which Robbie, I hope we get
- 1:52:14Speaker 1: you back for man. We are doing Arts Christmas in July,
- 1:52:19Speaker 1: so in July we will have three episodes coming out
- 1:52:23Speaker 1: as we cover the Terrifier trilogy.
- 1:52:27Speaker 2: Oh yeah, i'd be down, dude.
- 1:52:28Speaker 1: I'm hoping to get I want to get like four
- 1:52:30Speaker 1: or five guests on per episode of just make Make
- 1:52:32Speaker 1: It like a rock party, you know what I mean?
- 1:52:33Speaker 2: Yeah, Oh for sure. Yeah that was fun.
- 1:52:36Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. We'll be using the audio commentaries that are
- 1:52:38Speaker 1: featured on the Umbrella release because for Terrifier three there
- 1:52:41Speaker 1: is an exclusive commentary with the makeup effects artist who
- 1:52:44Speaker 1: was not Damian Leoni for that third one. CO so
- 1:52:48Speaker 1: very excited to dive into those. I'm sure there' are
- 1:52:50Speaker 1: going to be long ass episodes. I mean, Terrifier two
- 1:52:52Speaker 1: is two hours and twenty six minutes. Yeah, and that's
- 1:52:56Speaker 1: how long we talked longer than that about House of
- 1:52:59Speaker 1: a Thousand Corpses. That's ninety minutes long. Yeah, So you
- 1:53:03Speaker 1: know that'll be fun, yeah, dude, a lot of notes
- 1:53:09Speaker 1: and a lot of fun. There's gonna be some whiskey
- 1:53:10Speaker 1: on that one. I'm gonna have some fun in that episode.
- 1:53:15Speaker 1: But then after arts Christmas in July, we'll be putting
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: out the slate for season two, which will be running
- 1:53:20Speaker 1: the rest of the year. Chuck and I will be
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: doing our round up episode where we kind of cover
- 1:53:25Speaker 1: the first six months of the show. Where the show
- 1:53:27Speaker 1: is going. We're also hoping to for season two, which
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: would be the August episode, kick off the video portion
- 1:53:35Speaker 1: of the podcast, so we will be posting video episodes
- 1:53:39Speaker 1: over on YouTube on a Beyond the Blood channel. Those
- 1:53:43Speaker 1: will be available all week after the audio drops, so
- 1:53:46Speaker 1: for people who prefer watching and just want to stare
- 1:53:47Speaker 1: at our beautiful faces while listening to us talk way
- 1:53:51Speaker 1: too much about these movies, that'll be going on too.
