Transcript
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Daily Writer, where we share a lesson each day to help you cultivate the habits for creative success.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: How do you typically cope with getting stuck in your writing?
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: Do you sit there staring at the screen?
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: Do you avoid the hard work and switch over to a Netflix show?
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: Do you put your face in your hands and start sobbing uncontrollably?
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Well, if you do any of these things or something like it, there's a better way.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: The historical fiction writer Hilary Mantel shared some great advice.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: She said, If you get stuck, get away from your desk.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Take a walk, take a bath, go to sleep, make a pie, draw, listen to music, meditate, exercise.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Whatever you do, don't just stick there scowling at the problem.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: But don't make telephone calls or go to a party.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: If you do, other people's words will pour in where your lost words should be.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Open a gap for them.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: Create a space.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Be patient.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: This idea of opening a gap is really helpful.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Whenever you feel stuck, that's your creative brain telling you it's time to take a break from staring at the screen and to get involved in another activity.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Your subconscious mind is always there working for you.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: When you switch to something different, it gives your mind some breathing room to work on the problem.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: That opens a gap so the words can start flowing again.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: So the next time you feel stuck, give it a try and see if it helps you break through those creative blocks.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much for listening to today's episode.
