- 0:21Speaker 1: The great Mike Golick Sr.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Is with us.
- 0:23Speaker 3: Golick and Golick, 10 to noon Eastern on ESPN Radio.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Before we get to football, Mike, college football, NFL. You're
- 0:31Speaker 3: a baseball fan. You love the Guardians. You're from Cleveland. Taylor,
- 0:35Speaker 3: why don't you go ahead and share the take that
- 0:36Speaker 3: you had with us earlier about the meaning of the
- 0:39Speaker 3: Guardians of White Sox series.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Go ahead.
- 0:42Speaker 4: Yeah, Mike, I was just saying the Guardians and the
- 0:44Speaker 4: White Sox could play this series out, but don't even
- 0:47Speaker 4: bother showing up for the ALCS.
- 0:52Speaker 2: See, you know what, Taylor? That's why you play the games, right?
- 0:56Speaker 2: I mean, look at, and it's going to be Cleveland
- 0:59Speaker 2: because the White Sox, the White Sox, I equate to
- 1:04Speaker 2: Ole Miss. Ole Miss had a big win against LSU,
- 1:07Speaker 2: then went and got stomped on the road by Florida. Chicago,
- 1:11Speaker 2: I mean, everybody playing the interviews in the locker room
- 1:15Speaker 2: of them all getting drunk, which is cool. They should
- 1:18Speaker 2: have a good time. But now they've got to go
- 1:21Speaker 2: to Cleveland. Cleveland's got, obviously, home field in this. And
- 1:25Speaker 2: they're going to lose. Cleveland will be playing either the
- 1:28Speaker 2: Yankees or Tampa Bay. I don't know who or I
- 1:31Speaker 2: don't care who wins that series.
- 1:33Speaker 3: What Taylor and Mikey are saying is whoever wins the
- 1:35Speaker 3: Yanks-Rays series is going to the World Series.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Whatever. Whatever. Whatever. Okay.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Taylor also seems to think that the Yankees, he doesn't
- 1:46Speaker 3: want to say it, but they might just be better
- 1:49Speaker 3: without Aaron Judge in the lineup.
- 1:50Speaker 1: I mean....
- 1:53Speaker 2: Well, what's the shifting that's going to go on if
- 1:56Speaker 2: Aaron Judge comes back and can't play the field if
- 2:00Speaker 2: he comes back?
- 2:01Speaker 4: Mike, I didn't say the Yankees are better.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Without Aaron Judge. You were thinking about it.
- 2:05Speaker 4: I just said when Aaron Judge isn't in the lineup,
- 2:08Speaker 4: the rest of the lineup probably looks at it saying,
- 2:10Speaker 4: Aaron Judge isn't coming to save us, so we have
- 2:12Speaker 4: to step up our performances.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Hmm.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Yeah, and plus, coming back from being out as long
- 2:18Speaker 2: as he's been out, you love that bat in the lineup,
- 2:21Speaker 2: but man, how much does it take to get him going?
- 2:25Speaker 1: Yep.
- 2:26Speaker 3: Mike, when you were playing in the NFL, did you
- 2:29Speaker 3: want Reggie White in the lineup or not?
- 2:32Speaker 2: Yeah. Definitely wanted Reggie in the lineup.
- 2:35Speaker 1: It makes your job easier, right?
- 2:37Speaker 3: There is something to what Taylor is saying, that when
- 2:39Speaker 3: the star is out, the other guy's got to pick
- 2:40Speaker 3: up the slack, but you want your stars in the game.
- 2:44Speaker 2: It did cost me a lot of sacks because I
- 2:46Speaker 2: got there about a second and a half late when
- 2:48Speaker 2: Reggie would get a sack where it could have been
- 2:50Speaker 2: my sack had the quarterback held onto the ball for
- 2:53Speaker 2: like six seconds.
- 2:55Speaker 3: Mike, we're headed, not surprisingly, we are headed towards a
- 2:58Speaker 3: 2014 playoff, I think, in college football.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Your thoughts? Oh, 2014. I thought you said 2014. I'm like, yeah,
- 3:08Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know why you don't let it
- 3:10Speaker 2: be in 12 teams for a while.
- 3:12Speaker 1: I agree.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Let it marinate. I mean, my God, why are we
- 3:15Speaker 2: so now I get it. You know, coaches will love
- 3:19Speaker 2: it because now you can be one of 24 and say, hey,
- 3:21Speaker 2: we made the playoffs and I can save my job. Right.
- 3:24Speaker 2: But I'm not sure why they have to just jump
- 3:27Speaker 2: it so quickly. Every conference then is going to be
- 3:30Speaker 2: looking for automatics. Let 12 marinate for a little bit.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Well, you know the answer, Mike. The answer is money.
- 3:38Speaker 1: It's always money. Oh, absolutely.
- 3:41Speaker 2: It's always money. Listen, right now college sports, and we'll
- 3:48Speaker 2: say college football, is directionless. Yes, right. I mean, they're
- 3:53Speaker 2: going to the government for action. They can't make decisions
- 3:58Speaker 2: on their own. They ran away from decisions when NIL
- 4:02Speaker 2: and the portal got going. I mean, it's a mess.
- 4:05Speaker 2: And the adults, I've said this a thousand times, the
- 4:08Speaker 2: adults have all caused this. Don't blame the kids for
- 4:11Speaker 2: going to court, the kids. Don't blame the players for
- 4:14Speaker 2: going to court to win because they got handed the
- 4:17Speaker 2: chance to make a lot of money. You don't think
- 4:20Speaker 2: they're going to hang on to that any chance they can?
- 4:23Speaker 2: Hell yeah, they are, and I don't blame them.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Why'd you pull back on kids? They're still kids, Mike.
- 4:28Speaker 1: I mean.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Ah, you know, once you start getting paid a ton
- 4:32Speaker 2: of money to do something, can you call them kids anymore?
- 4:36Speaker 1: Put it on the poll, Taylor.
- 4:38Speaker 3: Once you start getting paid a lot of money to
- 4:41Speaker 3: do something, anything, can you call them a kid anymore?
- 4:45Speaker 1: I wish I could stop calling my kids kids. How
- 4:47Speaker 1: about you?
- 4:48Speaker 2: Boy, you're not kidding. I mean, my kids are my,
- 4:51Speaker 2: especially my one kid, my daughter in her thirties. Yeah.
- 4:54Speaker 2: She's still a kid because I'm, you know, The money
- 4:57Speaker 2: leaving my pocket is still immense.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Substantial. Yes, it is. Mike, what's the college football matchup
- 5:03Speaker 1: you're most excited for? Is it an easy answer? Is
- 5:05Speaker 1: it Alabama, Mississippi State?
- 5:07Speaker 2: Yeah, it really is. I mean, the two quarterbacks there,
- 5:11Speaker 2: the way Mississippi's wide receivers can kind of take the
- 5:15Speaker 2: top off of a defense, but the lines of scrimmage,
- 5:19Speaker 2: you kind of look at Bama in those. I think
- 5:22Speaker 2: that's going to be a really, really, really good matchup.
- 5:25Speaker 3: How impressed were you with Florida last week beating Mississippi?
- 5:28Speaker 3: You mentioned them earlier, but that was an impressive victory
- 5:30Speaker 3: for Florida.
- 5:33Speaker 2: I wasn't buying into the fact that Ole Miss was
- 5:35Speaker 2: going to have a letdown. I saw Florida. Florida had the–
- 5:41Speaker 2: they were favored. Their coach was even like, what kind
- 5:43Speaker 2: of drugs are people taking, favoring us? And then they
- 5:47Speaker 2: just stomped Ole Miss. I was surprised. saying you can't
- 5:52Speaker 2: get up two weeks in a row like that. And boy,
- 5:55Speaker 2: it certainly seemed to be pretty true.
- 5:58Speaker 4: Mike, we had news in the NFL today where the
- 6:00Speaker 4: Steelers send cornerback Joey Porter Jr. to the Cowboys in
- 6:04Speaker 4: exchange for a second round and a six-round pick. What
- 6:07Speaker 4: did you make of that trade?
- 6:08Speaker 2: Well, I mean, look, I'll give Jerry Jones credit for
- 6:13Speaker 2: making moves, right? I mean, I still... Never would have
- 6:18Speaker 2: traded Micah Parsons. Never would have traded him. But they did.
- 6:24Speaker 2: And I said this in the offseason. There's on paper,
- 6:29Speaker 2: and their defense looked really good on paper, and then
- 6:32Speaker 2: there's practical application of it actually looking good on the field.
- 6:36Speaker 2: And right now it doesn't. I mean, they're third worst
- 6:39Speaker 2: in total defense, second worst. They're giving up 179 yards
- 6:43Speaker 2: against the run. I mean, it's just they have, I think,
- 6:46Speaker 2: two sacks. I don't think they have an interception. I'm
- 6:50Speaker 2: not positive. They have a couple of fumble recoveries. But
- 6:54Speaker 2: the defense really isn't doing a ton. But I'll give
- 6:58Speaker 2: Jerry Jones credit. He's going out and acquiring talent, which
- 7:02Speaker 2: he knew he was going to have to do. Once
- 7:04Speaker 2: he traded Micah Parsons away, he knew he was going
- 7:07Speaker 2: to have to stack that defense. And he stacked them
- 7:10Speaker 2: on paper. But again, you have a collection of guys
- 7:14Speaker 2: playing together. for the first time under a first-time play-calling
- 7:18Speaker 2: defensive coordinator in Christian Parker. Oh, by the way, 2027 draft,
- 7:24Speaker 2: you have four draft picks, and you'll have 20 unrestricted
- 7:30Speaker 2: free agents. So you have basically burnt all the boats.
- 7:35Speaker 2: You have set all the boats on fire for now
- 7:38Speaker 2: because what are you looking at in the future?
- 7:41Speaker 4: Mike, it's funny that he traded away Micah Parsons because
- 7:45Speaker 4: he didn't want to pay him.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Then he trades for Quinnen Williams. Quinnen Williams. He trades
- 7:51Speaker 2: for Joey Porter, and he's paying all these guys.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Well, yeah.
- 7:56Speaker 2: I mean, but his thought is I'm paying multiple players,
- 8:01Speaker 2: you know, what I would have paid or more, a
- 8:03Speaker 2: little more than what I would have paid one player.
- 8:07Speaker 2: But you know what? That one player is an absolute
- 8:11Speaker 2: difference maker. They don't have anybody on that defense. Maybe
- 8:17Speaker 2: Quinn and Williams on the inside, but certainly not to
- 8:20Speaker 2: the degree of Micah Parsons. that you're game planning for,
- 8:23Speaker 2: that you have to know absolutely every single play where
- 8:27Speaker 2: Micah Parsons is.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Mike, he is a great player, but in Jerry's defense,
- 8:31Speaker 3: he hasn't played in eight games.
- 8:33Speaker 1: I mean, he's been injured.
- 8:35Speaker 2: No, that's true. Yes. He's been injured. He got hurt.
- 8:38Speaker 2: And he won't be back until at least— Week six,
- 8:41Speaker 2: so there certainly is that. I'm with you there. Again,
- 8:45Speaker 2: Jerry is doing exactly what he needed to do by
- 8:48Speaker 2: giving up a generational player like Micah Parsons.
- 8:51Speaker 3: Mike, we've been asking this question for years now, and
- 8:54Speaker 3: I'm wondering if we finally arrived at yes.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Are the Raiders for real?
- 9:00Speaker 2: Well, I mean, as far as... Being one of the
- 9:05Speaker 2: top teams in the AFC for the season, I don't
- 9:08Speaker 2: think so. I still don't think so. I think that
- 9:13Speaker 2: cream will rise to the top in the form of obviously,
- 9:19Speaker 2: you got to start with Buffalo and Kansas City, right?
- 9:21Speaker 2: I mean, Kansas City now has a frigging running game.
- 9:24Speaker 2: It's really those two. Jacksonville looked great last week, but
- 9:28Speaker 2: Not so much the week before when they lost the
- 9:30Speaker 2: lead to the Denver Broncos. I love what the Raiders
- 9:34Speaker 2: are doing. Obviously a monster test this week. Well, this
- 9:39Speaker 2: is a good gauge. Week four at home against the Chiefs.
- 9:43Speaker 2: If they can slow down the Chiefs running game, which
- 9:46Speaker 2: has been an unbelievable find with Kenneth Walker. I would
- 9:50Speaker 2: buy more into it, but certainly they're exceeding expectations. But,
- 9:55Speaker 2: you know, what are you talking about a success? You know,
- 9:58Speaker 2: they were awful last year. They're going to have more
- 10:01Speaker 2: wins than last year, but what's deemed successful for them?
- 10:04Speaker 1: Making the playoffs, maybe?
- 10:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, as bad as, you know, everybody thought
- 10:09Speaker 2: the Chargers were going to be a team, but they
- 10:12Speaker 2: are falling on hard times. I still like the Broncos
- 10:17Speaker 2: more than the Raiders. I certainly like the Chiefs more
- 10:20Speaker 2: than the Raiders. So are three teams going to make
- 10:22Speaker 2: it out of that division? We'll see.
- 10:35Speaker 3: Mike, one of the surprising teams has been the Minnesota
- 10:38Speaker 3: Vikings off to a 3-0 start. I'm wondering, in your opinion,
- 10:40Speaker 3: who deserves, which coach deserves more credit? Is it Brian
- 10:44Speaker 3: Flores or Kevin O'Connell?
- 10:46Speaker 2: Brian Flores. Without a doubt. Listen, you've got to make do.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Brian Flores not getting a head coaching job obviously has
- 10:54Speaker 2: to do with the suit and everything, right? Because once
- 10:59Speaker 2: that's squared away, who's not going to want to hire him? Now, again,
- 11:04Speaker 2: him as a head coach or him as a D coordinator,
- 11:06Speaker 2: there have been more than a few D coordinators or
- 11:08Speaker 2: O coordinators that became head coaches. that weren't very good, i.e.
- 11:12Speaker 2: see basically every coordinator who left the Patriots and became
- 11:15Speaker 2: a head coach.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Spagnuolo, too. I mean, there's a ton of them. Yeah.
- 11:20Speaker 2: It's not guaranteed that it's going to happen, but that
- 11:24Speaker 2: Minnesota defense is absolutely keeping Minnesota where they are. Yes.
- 11:30Speaker 2: Without a doubt. I mean, you have so much to
- 11:34Speaker 2: game plan for that you have to not only before
- 11:38Speaker 2: the game but during the game to try and put
- 11:41Speaker 2: a dent in that defense.
- 11:42Speaker 4: Mike, I'm looking at blitz rates, and Minnesota's blitz rate
- 11:45Speaker 4: is 71.1%. The next closest team is 46.7%. It would
- 11:51Speaker 4: be the highest blitz rate in a season since at
- 11:53Speaker 4: least 2016. Is that sustainable, or as Brian Flores just
- 11:58Speaker 4: kind of figured out, there's not enough good quarterbacks in
- 12:01Speaker 4: the NFL to process what I'm doing if I send
- 12:04Speaker 4: blitzes at this high of a clip?
- 12:06Speaker 2: Well, no, his blitzing is disguised, right? So you're not
- 12:14Speaker 2: sure who's coming and who's not. There's a lot of
- 12:16Speaker 2: times there's six guys at the line, only four come,
- 12:19Speaker 2: so it's really not considered a blitz. But other times
- 12:22Speaker 2: they are going to blitz. But if you blitz five,
- 12:25Speaker 2: it should still, especially if you have a back in
- 12:28Speaker 2: the backfield and 5-0 linemen, it should get picked up.
- 12:31Speaker 2: But they have free rushers. I mean, he's scheming and
- 12:35Speaker 2: incredibly does a great job of scheming and understands, listen,
- 12:40Speaker 2: it's a game of short passes anyway in the NFL,
- 12:45Speaker 2: but if you make the quarterback throw it quickly, then
- 12:48Speaker 2: you can cover it up by the guys you have
- 12:50Speaker 2: that are dropping back, right? If you know the ball's
- 12:53Speaker 2: coming out, you can cover closely on a receiver and
- 12:58Speaker 2: and not give them yards after the catch. You know,
- 13:01Speaker 2: you'll give a team a few yards, and their key
- 13:05Speaker 2: is they keep teams in the second and third and long,
- 13:08Speaker 2: where then the blitz is really going to work well,
- 13:10Speaker 2: because now you're getting home and making a quarterback throw
- 13:13Speaker 2: short when it's third and long.
- 13:16Speaker 3: Mike, kind of an interesting game tonight. We did not
- 13:18Speaker 3: expect this game to be interesting, but the Browns are 2-1.
- 13:21Speaker 3: I do love in the NFL, Miles Garrett left to
- 13:23Speaker 3: the Rams. to try to win a Super Bowl.
- 13:26Speaker 1: He's hurt. He's injured. They're 1-2.
- 13:28Speaker 3: The Browns, the team he left, is 2-1. No one
- 13:31Speaker 3: expected it. Deshaun Watson looks better and better with each
- 13:34Speaker 3: passing week. So it's an intriguing game tonight. I'm wondering,
- 13:38Speaker 3: do you think Shador Sanders starts a game for the
- 13:40Speaker 3: Browns this year if Watson stays healthy?
- 13:42Speaker 2: Well, I'll tell you what. Think of where we've gone.
- 13:45Speaker 2: We had Shador Sanders starting the first home game because
- 13:49Speaker 2: Deshaun Watson wouldn't do well on the first two road games.
- 13:52Speaker 2: And Mike and I were just talking about that on
- 13:54Speaker 2: our show, saying, has that all quieted down? I mean,
- 13:58Speaker 2: the fact that Deshaun– now, Deshaun's not– let's not get
- 14:02Speaker 2: crazy and say he's going to be offered a new
- 14:04Speaker 2: contract by Cleveland. I do not think that's going to
- 14:07Speaker 2: happen at all. But he's playing well enough to stay
- 14:10Speaker 2: on the field. So I think that is all kind
- 14:13Speaker 2: of muted talk right now. And you look at Pittsburgh
- 14:17Speaker 2: is 0-9 on the road on Thursday night against AFC
- 14:21Speaker 2: North opponents. That doesn't bode well, even though Aaron Rodgers
- 14:25Speaker 2: is going to try and tie Tom Brady for 14
- 14:28Speaker 2: wins on Thursday night. To me, this is the two
- 14:31Speaker 2: tackles for Cleveland, Fano and Howard. They, as a combination,
- 14:40Speaker 2: are giving up, I think, the most pressures in the league.
- 14:44Speaker 2: And all you have to deal with is T.J. Watt
- 14:46Speaker 2: and Highsmith, who are great edge rushers, right? So that
- 14:50Speaker 2: is going, and their center's out. Jenkins is out with
- 14:53Speaker 2: a concussion-incussion protocol for Cleveland. So they had basically a
- 14:57Speaker 2: whole new offensive line as well, and they're struggling a bit.
- 15:02Speaker 2: But Pittsburgh does not do well on the road on
- 15:04Speaker 2: Thursday nighters in Cleveland, that's for sure. I called the
- 15:07Speaker 2: game two years ago that was in that blizzard that
- 15:10Speaker 2: Cleveland won.
- 15:11Speaker 3: The Deshaun Watson stuff, that's media stuff, that's fan stuff.
- 15:15Speaker 3: I'm wondering, Mike, from a player's perspective, you don't care
- 15:19Speaker 3: who's playing quarterback.
- 15:20Speaker 1: Do you think the players care.
- 15:22Speaker 3: About the off-the-field issues with Deshaun Watson, or they care
- 15:25Speaker 3: about themselves, their feel-good, and winning football games?
- 15:28Speaker 2: I'll say this like I've always said with an NFL
- 15:30Speaker 2: locker room. You don't have 53 guys holding hands and
- 15:33Speaker 2: singing Kumbaya. You have guys that are great friends, guys
- 15:39Speaker 2: that are acquaintances, guys that are just teammates, and guys
- 15:43Speaker 2: that don't like one another. They could very well not
- 15:46Speaker 2: like what he did off the field, right?
- 15:48Speaker 4: Yep.
- 15:48Speaker 2: But you know what? You're going to block for him.
- 15:51Speaker 2: You're going to catch for him. You're going to run
- 15:53Speaker 2: for him when he's on that field. He's your teammate.
- 15:55Speaker 2: You're going to play for him. Doesn't mean you're going
- 15:57Speaker 2: to break bread after. I mean, you'd love a very
- 16:00Speaker 2: cohesive locker room, but that, you know, and that certainly
- 16:04Speaker 2: can happen. Sure. But I'm just telling you the dynamics
- 16:07Speaker 2: of a locker room aren't that all the time. Right.
- 16:10Speaker 2: But as long as he's playing well, not turning the
- 16:12Speaker 2: ball over and helping this offense, you They're fine with it.
- 16:16Speaker 1: What did you make of.
- 16:18Speaker 2: Not fine with what he did off the field, but
- 16:20Speaker 2: they're fine with him being the quarterback.
- 16:21Speaker 1: They're fine being 2-1 right now.
- 16:23Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly right. Yes.
- 16:25Speaker 3: They weren't expecting it, and Deshaun Watson is part of
- 16:27Speaker 3: the reason, not the entire reason, but he's played well
- 16:30Speaker 3: enough for them.
- 16:31Speaker 1: What would you make of Drake May? Mike, it is rare.
- 16:34Speaker 3: I cannot recall watching a guy who took his team
- 16:37Speaker 3: to a Super Bowl a year ago. Looks like he
- 16:40Speaker 3: doesn't know how to play football anymore seven or eight
- 16:43Speaker 3: months later. I mean, that's what it looked like. He
- 16:45Speaker 3: turned the ball over twice, I.
- 16:47Speaker 1: Think, last week.
- 16:48Speaker 3: It should have been like six or seven. But Drake
- 16:50Speaker 3: May looks like he has lost his confidence. What do
- 16:53Speaker 3: you make of that situation?
- 16:55Speaker 2: It is really wild, right? Matt Collins is your leading receiver. Again,
- 17:00Speaker 2: it's more than the quarterback. Quarterback always gets too much praise,
- 17:03Speaker 2: too much criticism. But for the heights he reached last year,
- 17:10Speaker 2: individually in the MVP race and the team going to
- 17:13Speaker 2: the Super Bowl. But now we all did say, if
- 17:16Speaker 2: you picked a couple of regression teams, that New England
- 17:20Speaker 2: would be one of them. And they are. But To
- 17:24Speaker 2: see him regress the way he has, I mean, he's
- 17:27Speaker 2: making poor decisions from his standpoint. Again, you have to
- 17:32Speaker 2: put the blame on a lot of different places, but
- 17:35Speaker 2: just talking about him personally, he is making poor decisions,
- 17:38Speaker 2: and still the worst thing you can do as a
- 17:40Speaker 2: quarterback is turn the ball over. One touchdown, six interceptions,
- 17:44Speaker 2: that's certainly going the wrong way.
- 17:47Speaker 4: Mike, this week the Giants went out and they got J.J.
- 17:49Speaker 4: McCarthy from the Vikings. Jameis it seems like is going
- 17:52Speaker 4: to still be their quarterback moving forward. How difficult is
- 17:56Speaker 4: it going to be for J.J. McCarthy to learn an
- 17:58Speaker 4: offense midseason?
- 18:01Speaker 2: I mean, that all depends on the neck up, right?
- 18:05Speaker 2: I mean, and I don't know enough about him to
- 18:09Speaker 2: pick it up, but obviously Harbaugh talked to Harbaugh, I'm sure,
- 18:13Speaker 2: before this move, and I'm sure that was one of
- 18:16Speaker 2: the questions of how well or how quickly could he
- 18:18Speaker 2: pick it up. I, quite honestly, I don't understand the move.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Part of me and part of me does. You're not
- 18:26Speaker 2: going to create a uh-oh situation. Jackson darts the quarterback
- 18:29Speaker 2: of this team. Now, he is coming off of knee surgery,
- 18:32Speaker 2: but not ACL surgery, but still knee surgery. So you're
- 18:37Speaker 2: not going to have that uh-oh, who's our quarterback. J.J. McCarthy,
- 18:41Speaker 2: in my opinion, has started what is going to be
- 18:46Speaker 2: a multiple team trip for his career. I mean, I
- 18:50Speaker 2: didn't think he should be taken that high, and I
- 18:52Speaker 2: know people say, oh, that's revisionist history, but I said
- 18:55Speaker 2: it then. Mike and I both said it. We didn't
- 18:57Speaker 2: think he should be taken that high. He struggled on
- 19:01Speaker 2: the field. He's had injuries. He's looked decent at times,
- 19:04Speaker 2: don't get me wrong, but he's also a very highly
- 19:07Speaker 2: picked quarterback who is usually going to get a chance somewhere.
- 19:13Speaker 4: Mike, going back to college for a minute, We were
- 19:15Speaker 4: talking about this this week, and I'm curious your thoughts.
- 19:19Speaker 1: If Lincoln Riley is.
- 19:20Speaker 4: Done at USC, how attractive of a job is that?
- 19:25Speaker 4: And how attractive is Lincoln Riley for other jobs?
- 19:29Speaker 2: Well, I'm not sure Lincoln– I think the job is
- 19:33Speaker 2: more attractive to a new coach than Lincoln Riley is
- 19:38Speaker 2: to coach somewhere else. And I'll tell you why. You
- 19:40Speaker 2: get great athletes at USC. I mean, great athletes. to
- 19:45Speaker 2: make it almost head-scratching on why they struggle so much.
- 19:49Speaker 2: And then, obviously, if you scratch your head on why
- 19:52Speaker 2: they struggle so much, you would look at the coach, right? Yes.
- 19:55Speaker 2: So I think as far as a high-profile job, you're
- 19:59Speaker 2: talking about Brian Kelly maybe going to Rutgers, right? I mean,
- 20:04Speaker 2: Brian Kelly is going to be done, at least for
- 20:06Speaker 2: the time being– With high profile, I'm only missing a
- 20:10Speaker 2: national championship from my resume type of job. He's not
- 20:14Speaker 2: going to get that job, at least in the near future.
- 20:16Speaker 2: Lincoln Riley is going to take a step down, I think,
- 20:21Speaker 2: from where he is to where his next coaching job
- 20:24Speaker 2: would be. But coaches are always so confident in, I
- 20:28Speaker 2: can take great athletes and players and turn them into something.
- 20:32Speaker 2: So a new coach is going to think, man, I
- 20:35Speaker 2: got some players here at SC. Would Bob Chesney leave
- 20:39Speaker 2: to go to USC?
- 20:40Speaker 1: Hmm.
- 20:42Speaker 2: Bob Chesney leave to go to USC?
- 20:44Speaker 1: Of course he would.
- 20:45Speaker 2: I mean, yeah. Listen, I would, yeah, I would think so. Yes. Again,
- 20:51Speaker 2: I don't know. what certain coaches' ties are to a program.
- 20:56Speaker 1: Right.
- 20:56Speaker 3: Like Lane Kiffin leaving Mississippi, he left to go to
- 20:59Speaker 3: LSU because that job still means something to a guy
- 21:01Speaker 3: like Lane Kiffin. You don't know if this job means
- 21:03Speaker 3: something to a guy like Bob Chesney.
- 21:05Speaker 2: We have no idea. Exactly right. Exactly right. I don't
- 21:08Speaker 2: know that.
- 21:08Speaker 1: Right.
- 21:09Speaker 2: How about Marcus Freeman leave Notre Dame? No. Absolutely not.
- 21:13Speaker 2: It's USC.
- 21:14Speaker 1: Absolutely not.
- 21:17Speaker 2: I know Marcus. I know what's in his mind. I
- 21:20Speaker 2: know it. NFL team, stop calling Marcus. Leave him alone.
- 21:24Speaker 2: He loves where he is. Let him be at Notre Dame. No,
- 21:27Speaker 2: stop talking about Marcus.
- 21:29Speaker 1: It's not the NFL.
- 21:30Speaker 3: It's USC calling now.
- 21:32Speaker 2: No, he's not going from Notre Dame to USC. Are
- 21:35Speaker 2: you kidding me? No.
- 21:37Speaker 1: Would Dan Lanning leave Oregon to go to a place
- 21:40Speaker 1: like USC?
- 21:41Speaker 2: No, I don't think he would. Why would he? I mean,
- 21:44Speaker 2: why would he? He's getting great. He gets great recruits
- 21:48Speaker 2: every year. He's in the talk about a national title.
- 21:51Speaker 2: Why would he go try and turn a program around
- 21:54Speaker 2: when he has a winning program now?
- 21:56Speaker 3: I think it's a quick turnaround. I think L.A., USC,
- 21:59Speaker 3: the brand, the market, good weather, great athletes. It's a
- 22:02Speaker 3: quick turnaround for a good coach. Lincoln Riley's just not one.
- 22:05Speaker 2: I don't think he's struggling under the Nike banner in Oregon.
- 22:12Speaker 1: Taylor wants Lincoln Riley at Chapel Hill next year.
- 22:15Speaker 2: I'd take him. Yes. Well, I mean, that would be
- 22:19Speaker 2: a type of job Lincoln Riley is going to get.
- 22:21Speaker 1: Right.
- 22:22Speaker 2: A bad one. He's going to get more of a
- 22:24Speaker 2: mid-level FBS team. Go ahead, Mikey. Kalen DeBoer. Ooh. Leaving
- 22:32Speaker 2: Alabama for USC? Yes. Well, listen, I mean.
- 22:35Speaker 4: It's more about leaving Alabama and convincing yourself it's to
- 22:40Speaker 4: go to USC versus.
- 22:42Speaker 2: At some point, I mean, I remember Bill Curry, who
- 22:46Speaker 2: God I love and I did games with for years,
- 22:48Speaker 2: when he coached Alabama, the pressure that he said was
- 22:53Speaker 2: on him after a loss, and then now Kalen DeBoer
- 22:57Speaker 2: following Nick Saban. So... If the pressure gets to him,
- 23:01Speaker 2: maybe that would be a reason. But no coach ever
- 23:05Speaker 2: wants to admit the pressure's getting to him.
- 23:07Speaker 3: Mike, the Chargers, perhaps Jim Harbaugh should have made the
- 23:10Speaker 3: trade for J.J.
- 23:11Speaker 1: McCarthy. What is wrong with that team, man?
- 23:14Speaker 2: Man, well, injuries to the O-line certainly hurt. Last year,
- 23:17Speaker 2: the tackles. This year, the center. But even the tackles
- 23:20Speaker 2: coming back from major injuries over a year are still struggling.
- 23:26Speaker 2: But that That's a head-scratching team because that was a
- 23:28Speaker 2: top-ten defense as well last year. Now they had a
- 23:33Speaker 2: lead last week. They were playing well last week, right, against–
- 23:37Speaker 2: what was it?
- 23:38Speaker 1: It was at Buffalo.
- 23:39Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. Against the Bills.
- 23:41Speaker 1: They had a lead early in that game.
- 23:42Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. That is a bit of a head-scratcher considering,
- 23:46Speaker 2: according to Jim Harbaugh, you have the greatest quarterback of
- 23:49Speaker 2: all time in Justin Herbert.
- 23:50Speaker 1: But he's out of excuses, right? Mike McDaniels, the OC, yes.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Well, absolutely he's out of excuses. So you thought Jim
- 23:57Speaker 2: Harbaugh might be coaching there a long time, but all
- 24:00Speaker 2: of a sudden there's going to be some eyebrows raised.
- 24:03Speaker 3: What did you make of Jalen Hurts' reaction going into
- 24:05Speaker 3: the blue tent? Andy Dalton, the one pass attempt he
- 24:08Speaker 3: had was an interception. We finally saw some emotion from
- 24:11Speaker 3: Jalen Hurts. He was pissed off he had to go
- 24:13Speaker 3: into the blue tent, Mike.
- 24:14Speaker 2: Well, he was ticked off. He got taken off the field. Again,
- 24:17Speaker 2: that's for the player's safety. Independent spotters making him go off.
- 24:22Speaker 2: And then when you're getting looked at for a head injury,
- 24:25Speaker 2: that's a tough call. I mean, you can get mad
- 24:28Speaker 2: all you want, but that's not changing. And that's not
- 24:31Speaker 2: changing because the NFL lost a $ 700 million lawsuit, a
- 24:35Speaker 2: concussion lawsuit. So they are going to be overprotective, and
- 24:39Speaker 2: they are going to take players' helmets away.
- 24:41Speaker 3: Last question, Golik and Golik, 10 to noon Eastern on
- 24:44Speaker 3: ESPN Radio. Through three weeks, San Francisco, is it fair
- 24:49Speaker 3: to say they're the best team in the NFL?
- 24:54Speaker 2: I would say they, Kansas City, Buffalo, are the top
- 24:57Speaker 2: three teams. But San Francisco doing it with almost one
- 25:00Speaker 2: arm tied behind their back.
- 25:02Speaker 1: I know, I know.
- 25:03Speaker 2: You probably got to give them the nod. I mean,
- 25:05Speaker 2: with all the freaking injuries, it's been unbelievable what's been
- 25:08Speaker 2: going on. I would say those three are the top tier.
- 25:12Speaker 3: I mean, Brock Bird, he's been ridiculous. He's been the
- 25:14Speaker 3: best quarterback in the league. Yes, he has been.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Yes.
- 25:17Speaker 2: Absolutely has. Listen, Kyle Shanahan, excellent coach. Yes. Without question.
- 25:21Speaker 1: A real quarterback whisperer, not O'Connell.
- 25:22Speaker 2: Yep.
- 25:23Speaker 1: I mean, get out of here. Yes.
- 25:25Speaker 3: All right, Mike, we appreciate it. Enjoy the weekend. Golik
- 25:28Speaker 3: and Golik, 10 to noon Eastern ESPN Radio. He's on
- 25:31Speaker 3: the Notre Dame games. He's got NFL. He's working seven
- 25:34Speaker 3: days a week. He's never going to stop working.
- 25:38Speaker 2: Not if my wife can help it, right? She likes
- 25:40Speaker 2: when I'm gone, I guess.
- 25:41Speaker 1: It's not about money. It's about you not being there, yes.
- 25:44Speaker 2: Her sanity.
