- 0:30Welcome back listeners to Sandman Stories Presents, a
- 0:32folklore podcast where I rate you to sleep or until the next
- 0:35story. I'm your host, Dustin.
- 0:40And if you want more Sandman, we have Sandman After Dark over on
- 0:44the Patreon for absolutely free. But if you want to be a cool
- 0:47person like Cheryl or Nick, you can go ahead and throw a few
- 0:50bones my way. Big thank you to them for
- 0:53signing up for the paid Patreon. And today we are back in the
- 0:58book of Japanese folklore written down by Yay Tedoro
- 1:02Ozaki. This is a story that I covered
- 1:05once before early on on the YouTube channel because it was
- 1:10easy enough to do the little woodblock print version of this.
- 1:14But that little 10 page tale turned into a 30 page tale with
- 1:18Yay Tedorozaki throwing in all sorts of extra stuff.
- 1:21So without any extra ado, let's begin Happy Hunter and skillful
- 1:28Fisher. Long, long ago, Japan was
- 1:31governed by the 4th Mikoto. Because of his unmatched skill
- 1:35as a hunter, he was called Happy Hunter of the Mountains.
- 1:40His older brother was a very talented angler and he was named
- 1:43the Skillful Fisher of the Sea. The brothers LED happy lives,
- 1:48the one hunting and the other fishing.
- 1:52One day Happy Hunter came to his brother and said, Brother, I see
- 1:56you come home with lots of fish. I'm the top hunter in the
- 1:59forest, but I'd like to change, if only for a day.
- 2:04Skilful Fisher listened to his brother and thought for a
- 2:07minute, and at last he answered. Yeah, sure, why not?
- 2:11Give me your bow and arrows and I'll go hunt.
- 2:13Go ahead and go fish. So they switched jobs and had no
- 2:17inkling of what was to come. Unfortunately, Skillful Fisher
- 2:21knew nothing about hunting, and Happy Hunter couldn't catch a
- 2:24fish. To save his life, Happy Hunter
- 2:28took his brother's prize rod and reel and went down to the water.
- 2:31He cast it several times, but brought in nothing.
- 2:35He spent the whole day like this, sitting on the rocks,
- 2:39holding the fishing rod and waiting in vain for a little
- 2:42nibble. By that evening, he had not
- 2:45caught a single fish. Pulling up his line one last
- 2:49time, he found that he had lost the hook too.
- 2:53He worried because he knew it was his brother's favorite hook.
- 2:58Happy Hunter looked everywhere for the hook, and while he was
- 3:00searching, his brother arrived. He hadn't caught anything
- 3:04either, and he was in a terrible mood.
- 3:07When he saw Happy Hunter searching about on the shore, he
- 3:10knew that something must have gone wrong, so he said.
- 3:14What are you doing? Happy looked down and kicked at
- 3:17some rocks because he was scared of his brother's temper, and he
- 3:20said, Oh my brother, I've messed up, what is the matter?
- 3:25What did you do? Asked his old brother.
- 3:29I have lost your favorite fishhook.
- 3:32While he was still speaking, his brother stopped him and shouted.
- 3:35Lost my hook. I didn't want to change jobs
- 3:38from the beginning, but you insisted.
- 3:40I'm not giving you back your bow and arrows until I get my hook
- 3:42back. Happy Hunter was mad at himself
- 3:45for losing the hook. He went home and took his
- 3:48favorite sword and broke it into 5000 fish hooks.
- 3:51He took them to his brother, but none of them were good enough.
- 3:55His brother wanted his hook and only his hook.
- 4:00Happy then made another 5000 hooks and took them to his
- 4:02brother again begging for forgiveness.
- 4:06Even if you made a million hooks, said skillful Fisher
- 4:09shaking his head. I still couldn't use them, and I
- 4:13won't forgive you until you bring back my hook.
- 4:18Nothing soothed the anger of Skilful Fisher, because in
- 4:21reality he just wanted to rule Japan.
- 4:25Happy knew this, but he couldn't say anything because he was the
- 4:27younger brother. So we went back to the beach and
- 4:31looked for the missing hook. While he stood on the beach, an
- 4:35old man suddenly appeared. You are the Mikoto, aren't you?
- 4:40Asked the old man, What are you doing down here alone?
- 4:44Yes, that's me, answered the unhappy young man.
- 4:48I was fishing with my brother's hook and I didn't catch a single
- 4:51fish and then I lost his lucky hook.
- 4:56I've looked everywhere but gosh darn, I can't find it and I'm
- 4:59upset. But who are you?
- 5:02My name. Is Mr. Yamamoto and I live here?
- 5:06I'm sorry to say that the hook is not here.
- 5:09It is either at the bottom of the sea or in the belly of some
- 5:12fish who has swallowed it. You won't be able to find it
- 5:15here. What should I do?
- 5:19Asked the distressed man. You had better go down to Rujin,
- 5:23the Dragon King of the Sea, and ask him to find the hook for
- 5:26you. I think that would be the best
- 5:29way. Good idea, said Happy.
- 5:32But I can't get to the Sea King's realm because I have
- 5:34heard that it's at the bottom of the sea.
- 5:37Oh, that is no problem, said the old man.
- 5:40I can make you something for that.
- 5:43Thank you, said Happy. I'll be very grateful for that.
- 5:46The old man made a basket and gave it to Happy.
- 5:49He said thank you and climbed in.
- 5:51He said goodbye to the old man and told him that he would get
- 5:53him a cool souvenir from the bottom of the ocean.
- 5:57The old man pointed to the water and told him how to get there,
- 6:00and then watched him float out into the sea.
- 6:04Happy went as quickly as he could.
- 6:06Soon he saw the Sea King's palace.
- 6:08He landed and walked up to the gate.
- 6:11It was the most beautiful gate he had ever seen.
- 6:15Happy had often heard of the Sea King's palace, but nothing
- 6:17compared to what stood before him.
- 6:21Happy wanted to enter the gate, but he saw that it was closed,
- 6:24and so he stopped to think. Beneath the trees he noticed a
- 6:28well. Someone would have to come out
- 6:31to get water, so he climbed one of the trees and waited.
- 6:36Before long, he saw the gate open and two beautiful women
- 6:39came out. He had heard that the Dragon
- 6:42King's home was full of monsters, so he was glad to see
- 6:45these two women. He watched from behind some
- 6:48leaves. He saw their golden buckets.
- 6:51They stepped up to the well and pulled up some water.
- 6:54When they leaned over the side of the well, they saw his face
- 6:56reflected in the water. They had never seen a man's face
- 7:01and they were frightened and quickly pulled up their buckets.
- 7:04But they were curious and looked up into the tree but stayed
- 7:08silent. When he saw that he was
- 7:12discovered, he leapt down from the tree and said I'm sorry, I
- 7:15was very thirsty. I came to the well in hopes of
- 7:18quenching my thirst, but I couldn't find a bucket, so I
- 7:21climbed a tree and wait for someone to come.
- 7:24Then you ladies appeared. Do you have any water for me?
- 7:28For I'm a thirsty stranger in a strange land.
- 7:32His graciousness overruled their shyness, and they went back to
- 7:36the well, drew up some water and poured it into a jeweled cup and
- 7:39offered it to the stranger. He took it from them with both
- 7:44hands, raising it to the height of his forehead in respect, and
- 7:47then drank the water. When he had finished his drink,
- 7:51he set the cup down, drew out his sword, and cut off one of
- 7:54the jewels from his necklace. He placed the jewel in the cup
- 7:58and gave it back to them and said This is a token of my
- 8:02thanks. The two ladies took the cup and
- 8:05looked into it. They were surprised by the
- 8:08beautiful gem at the bottom of the cup.
- 8:10No ordinary mortal would give away a jewel so freely.
- 8:13Won't you honor us by telling us who you are?
- 8:16Asked the older damsel. Certainly said Happy Hunter.
- 8:20I'm Hoho Demi. The 4th Mikuto also called in
- 8:24Japan. Happy Hunter, are you indeed
- 8:28Hoho Demi, the grandson of Amoratsu, the Sun Goddess?
- 8:31As the maiden, I'm the eldest daughter of Rujin, the King of
- 8:35the Sea, and my name is Princess Taiyotama, the younger maiden
- 8:40said. I am her sister, Princess
- 8:42Tamayori. Are you really the daughters of
- 8:46the Yujin, the King of the Sea? I cannot tell you how glad I am
- 8:50to meet you, said Happy Hunter. The other day I went fishing
- 8:53with my brother's hook and dropped it.
- 8:56It was my brother's favorite hook and unless I find it, he
- 8:59will stay mad at me. I've looked all over but I can't
- 9:02find it. I want you to ask Eugene if he
- 9:04knows where the hook is. Will you be so kind as to take
- 9:07me to your father? Asked Happy anxiously.
- 9:12Princess Teyatama listened to his story and said that will be
- 9:16no problem. My father would love to meet
- 9:18such an impressive mortal from the land world.
- 9:21Come this way. Said the sisters.
- 9:25The younger Princess left her sister and she got into the Sea
- 9:28King's palace first. She quickly ran to her father's
- 9:31room and told him everything. The Dragon King was surprised at
- 9:35the news because it had been in a millennia since the last
- 9:38mortal had visited. Eugene clapped his hands and
- 9:42summoned his court and let them know that the grandson of
- 9:45Amaratsu was coming there. Eugene then dressed himself in
- 9:50his ceremonial robes and went out to welcome them.
- 9:53In a few moments, Princess Tautama and Happy came to the
- 9:56gate and the Sea King and his wife bowed and thanked him for
- 9:59coming to see them. The Sea King then LED Happy to
- 10:03the guest room and putting him in the highest seat, he bowed
- 10:06respectfully and said. I am Rujin, the Dragon King of
- 10:10the Sea, and this is my wife. Are you really Rujin?
- 10:15The King of the Sea Answered Happy Hunter, saluting his host.
- 10:19I am sorry for all the trouble that I'm giving you because of
- 10:21my unexpected visit. And he bowed again and thanked
- 10:25the Sea King. The Sea King and Happy Hunter
- 10:29sat and talked for a long time. At last the Sea King clapped his
- 10:33hands, and then a huge retinue of fishes appeared, holding
- 10:36trays on which all kinds of sea delicacies were served.
- 10:41A great feast was spread before the King and his royal guest.
- 10:45The time passed so pleasantly that Happy seemed to forget his
- 10:47troubles and why he'd come to the Sea King's realm, and he
- 10:51gave himself up to the enjoyment of this wonderful place.
- 10:55Who had ever heard of such a wonderful place?
- 10:59But then Happy remembered the hook and he said to his host.
- 11:02Perhaps your daughters have told you, King Nujin, that I have
- 11:06come here to try and find my brother's hook that I lost while
- 11:09fishing. May I ask you to ask all your
- 11:13subjects if they have seen a lost hook?
- 11:17Certainly, said the Sea King, I will bring them here and ask
- 11:20them immediately. As soon as he had issued his
- 11:24command, the octopus, the cuttlefish, the oxtail fish, the
- 11:28eel, the jellyfish, the shrimp, and the flounder, and many other
- 11:31kinds of fish all came in and sat down before the Eugene and
- 11:34arranged themselves. Then the Sea King said solemnly,
- 11:39Our visitor, who is sitting before you all, is the grandson
- 11:42of Amaratsu. He is called Happy Hunter.
- 11:46While fishing the other day on the shores of Japan, someone
- 11:49robbed him of his brother's fishing hook.
- 11:52He came all this way down to the bottom of the sea to our
- 11:55Kingdom, because he thought that one of you may have taken the
- 11:58hook from him as a laugh. If any of you have done so, you
- 12:02must return it immediately, or if any of you know who the thief
- 12:06is, you must at once tell us his name and where he is.
- 12:11All the fishes were surprised when they heard these words and
- 12:14were silent for a moment. They sat looking at each other
- 12:18and at the Dragon King. At last the cuttlefish came
- 12:22forward and said. I think the rosefish must be the
- 12:25thief. Why, Asked the king.
- 12:30Last night the rosefish wasn't able to eat anything, and it
- 12:34seems like he has a sore throat, so I think the hook may be in
- 12:38his throat. You had better send for him at
- 12:40once. All the fish agreed and said, It
- 12:45is certainly strange that the Rose Fish is the only fish who
- 12:48has not obeyed your summons. Will you send for him and asked
- 12:51about it? Then our innocence will be
- 12:54proved. Without waiting for the King's
- 12:57order, the cuttlefish started for the Rose Fish's dwelling.
- 13:00He brought him in before the king.
- 13:02The fish sat there looking frightened, and I'll he
- 13:05certainly was in pain, for his red face was now pale and his
- 13:08eyes were nearly closed and looked half their usual size.
- 13:13Answer, O rose fish, cried the Sea King.
- 13:17Why didn't you come to my summons today?
- 13:21I have been sick since yesterday, that is why I could
- 13:25not come, said the fish weakly. Don't say another word, cried
- 13:30out Rujin angrily. Your illness is the punishment
- 13:33of the gods for stealing Happy's hook.
- 13:37It is true, said the Rose fish. The hook is still in my throat
- 13:42and all my efforts to get it out have been useless.
- 13:45I can't eat. And I can barely breathe.
- 13:49And I feel that it will choke me.
- 13:51I didn't mean to. Steal the hook.
- 13:53I snapped at the bait in the water and the hook came off and.
- 13:57Stuck in my. Throat.
- 13:59Please forgive me. Oh please.
- 14:02Hurry up and pull it out, cried the Rose Fish pitifully, for he
- 14:07felt the pains in his throat. I do want to return the hook to
- 14:12happy. All right, Mr. Rosefish, said
- 14:15his friend the cuttlefish. And then, opening the fish's
- 14:18mouth as wide as he could, he put one of his feelers down the
- 14:21rosefish's throat. He took the hook out of the
- 14:24large fish's mouth, then he washed it and brought it to the
- 14:27king. Eugen took the hook and then
- 14:30returned it to Happy, who was overjoyed in getting back his
- 14:32hook. He thanked Eugen many times.
- 14:36Rujin forgave his subject at once at the request of his
- 14:39guest. The fish was so glad that he
- 14:43shook his fins for joy. Now that the hook was found,
- 14:47Happy had nothing to keep him in the Dragon's palace, and he was
- 14:51anxious to get back to his own Kingdom and to make peace with
- 14:53his angry brother. But the Sea King begged him not
- 14:56to go, but to stay as long as he liked.
- 15:01While Happy Hunter was waffling, the two lovely princesses came
- 15:04in and join their father in pressing him to stay.
- 15:08If he were to say no, it would look very ungracious, so he
- 15:11stayed for a while. Happy Hunter found that three
- 15:15years went by quickly in this delightful land.
- 15:19The years passed swiftly when one is truly happy, But though
- 15:23the Sea King's kindness seemed rather to increase than to grow
- 15:27less with time, Happy Hunter grew more and more homesick as
- 15:30the days passed, and he could not hide his anxiety to know
- 15:33what had happened with his brother at home.
- 15:37So at last he went to the Sea King and said.
- 15:39My stay with you here has been most happy, and I'm very
- 15:42grateful for all your kindness to me.
- 15:45But I govern Japan, and as delightful as this place is, I
- 15:49cannot leave my country for so long.
- 15:52I also must return the fish hook to my brother and ask for his
- 15:54forgiveness. I'm very sorry to leave you, but
- 15:58this time it cannot be helped. With your gracious permission, I
- 16:02will leave to day. I hope to a visit again soon
- 16:05someday. King Neugen was overcome with
- 16:09the sorrow at the thought that he must lose his friend, and his
- 16:11tears fell fast as he answered. We are indeed very sorry to part
- 16:16with you. Happy, for we have enjoyed your
- 16:18stay with us very much. You have been a wonderful guest.
- 16:21I hope you will not forget us. Strange circumstances have
- 16:24brought us together, and I trust the friendship between the land
- 16:27and the sea will last and will grow stronger than it has ever
- 16:29been before. When the Sea King finished
- 16:33speaking, he turned to his daughters and asked them to
- 16:35bring the two tied jewels of the sea.
- 16:38The two princesses bowed and left the hall.
- 16:41In a few minutes they return, each carrying a flashing gem
- 16:45which filled the room with light.
- 16:48As Happy looked at them, he wondered what they could be.
- 16:52The Sea King said to his guest. We got these gems from our
- 16:55ancestors and have held them ever since.
- 16:58These two gems are called the Nanju and the Kanju.
- 17:02Happy bowed and said. I can never thank you enough for
- 17:05all your kindness to me, and please tell me what these jewels
- 17:08are. The Sea King answered.
- 17:12The Nanju is also called the Jewel of the Flood Tide and
- 17:16whoever has it in his possession can command the sea to flood the
- 17:19land at any time. The Kanju is also called the
- 17:23Jewel of the Epping Tide, and this gem will cause even a tidal
- 17:28wave to recede. Then the Eugen showed his friend
- 17:32how to use the talismans and handed them over to him.
- 17:36Happy was very glad to have these two wonderful gems, the
- 17:39Flood Tide Jewel and the Ebing Tide Jewel to take them back
- 17:43with him, for he felt that they would come in handy.
- 17:47After thanking his kind host again and again, he prepared to
- 17:50leave the Sea King and Tayotama and Tamayori and all the palace
- 17:56came out to say goodbye. And before the sound of the last
- 17:59goodbye had faded, Happy passed the gateway on his way to the
- 18:02beach. Here, instead of the basket in
- 18:06which he had come in on, a large crocodile was waiting for him.
- 18:11He had never seen such a huge creature.
- 18:14It measured 8 fathoms in length from the tip of its tail to the
- 18:17end of its long mouth. The Sea King ordered the monster
- 18:20to carry Happy back to Japan. It travelled faster than any
- 18:24Steamboat and Happy Hunter returned to his own land.
- 18:29As soon as the crocodile landed, Happy ran to tell Fisher of his
- 18:32safe return. He gave him back the fish hook
- 18:35that had been swallowed by the Rose fish.
- 18:38He bagged his brother's forgiveness, telling him all
- 18:40that had happened in the Sea King's palace and the wonderful
- 18:43adventures that had led him to the finding of the hook.
- 18:48Fisher had used the lost hook as an excuse to drive his brother
- 18:51out of the country. When his brother had left him
- 18:54that day three years ago, he took his brother's place and had
- 18:57gotten rich. Now Happy Hunter stood before
- 19:01him, spoiling his riches. Fisher feigned forgiveness
- 19:06because he had run out of reasons to kick his brother out,
- 19:09but in his heart he was very angry and hated his brother even
- 19:13more. At last he could no longer bear
- 19:16the sight of him and plan to kill him one day.
- 19:22While Happy was walking, his brother followed him with a
- 19:24dagger. Happy knew that his brother was
- 19:27following him and he felt that now, in this hour of great
- 19:30danger, that it was time to use the jewels and prove what the
- 19:33seeking had told him was true. He took out the flood jewel from
- 19:37his pocket and raised it to his forehead.
- 19:40Instantly the sea rolled in wave after wave, over the fields and
- 19:44over the farms till it reached his brother's feet.
- 19:47Fisher stood amazed and terrified to see what was
- 19:49happening. In another minute he was in the
- 19:53water and asking his brother to save him from drowning.
- 19:57Happy had a kind heart. He put away the flood jewel and
- 20:00took out the AB jewel. No sooner did he hold it up,
- 20:03then the sea ran back and back, and the farms and the fields and
- 20:07the dry land appeared as before. Fisher was frightened at his
- 20:11near death experience, and he was greatly impressed by his
- 20:14brother. He changed his mind about his
- 20:17brother and pledged to faithfully serve his younger
- 20:19brother. Then happy Hunter said that he
- 20:22would forgive his brother if he would stop his evil ways.
- 20:26Skilful Fisher promised and there was peace between the two
- 20:29brothers. From this time, he kept his word
- 20:33and became a good man and a kind brother.
- 20:37Happy Hunter now ruled his Kingdom and there was peace in
- 20:39Japan for a long, long time. This is the congratulatory
- 20:44ending of Happy Hunter and Skilful Fisher.
- 20:48The End. I like the story.
- 21:13I covered it once before when I was covering the woodblock
- 21:14prints. Of course, Tidor added in an
- 21:16extra 10 pages, not exaggerating to make the story sound more
- 21:21fancy. I like how the younger brother
- 21:23visited the Seadragon's realm and had a good time and a peek
- 21:27behind the curtain. Editing this story from the
- 21:29original thirtyish pages down to less than 20 took me several
- 21:32days of editing. It was a beast.
- 21:33Still, I look forward to more stories.
- 21:37The podcast shout Out is to the word of mouth.
- 21:39This is a show about language and how we use it, and it's
- 21:41hosted by the awesome Michael Rosen.
- 21:43Go ahead and give it a listen. And the listener shout out is to
- 21:47someone special, Mitzi. I added on the shout out to my
- 21:51listeners way back in the day. And like most podcasters, I
- 21:54never know if people like it or not.
- 21:56Well, I went to the Reddit on Wiki Live show and met Mitzi
- 21:59face to face. She said she liked the podcast
- 22:02Shout Outs, and so I say to her and to the other cool folks that
- 22:06I met at the live show Kamzami da Kurugo Chao, thank you and
- 22:12sleep well.
