- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we have a very, very short
- 0:19Psalm. It's all of three verses.
- 0:22And I'll tell you guys kind of a little behind the scenes I went,
- 0:27man, there is just not a lot contained within this one Psalm.
- 0:32I wonder if I could write a song from this Psalm And I did the
- 0:40recording that I did of it with this microphone.
- 0:43If you're watching the the podcast, that one that I did
- 0:50this microphone didn't get the guitar as much.
- 0:53So I'm going to try it one more time a little bit later with
- 0:57just my phone audio and see how that goes for it.
- 1:02But I wrote it's not a long song.
- 1:04It's just a little one for this little Psalm, but I might show
- 1:07it to you guys. But I love that 2500, you know,
- 1:13plus actually, since this is a song with David, about 2900
- 1:19years after this was originally penned, people are still making
- 1:24music about God and about His goodness and His faithfulness
- 1:27and the fact that we can trust Him all this time later.
- 1:31And what a joy that we have the God that is faithful throughout
- 1:34all ages. Psalm 131 is another one of the
- 1:38song of a sense. These are the road trip songs
- 1:40that the children of Israel are singing as they go up to
- 1:44Jerusalem three times a year for the annual feasts as they
- 1:48worship the Lord, give thanks for what He has done, remember
- 1:51his work in the past, and look forward to what God would do in
- 1:56the future. And this particular Psalm is a
- 1:58Psalm of David. He says in verse #1 Yahweh.
- 2:03My heart is not proud. My eyes are not haughty.
- 2:07I do not get involved with things too great or too wondrous
- 2:11for me. Instead, I have calmed and
- 2:14quieted my soul like a weaned child with its mother.
- 2:18My soul is like a weaned child. Israel, put your hope in Yahweh
- 2:24both now and forever. Want to look at these and what
- 2:30kind of go because we've got both the time and because this
- 2:34is such a short Psalm, we'll kind of go word by word and look
- 2:38through this Psalm together. So the first thing that he says
- 2:41is my, he says Yahweh, my heart. This is my inner self.
- 2:47This is the inclinations that I have got, what I am leaning
- 2:51towards who I am on the inside here, David says it is not
- 2:56proud, it's not high or exalted, it's not haughty.
- 3:01This word can even mean in some instances like to be cheerful or
- 3:06to be perhaps encouraged. He says, God, I'm not thinking
- 3:11inside of me that I am anything great.
- 3:15I'm not even particularly jazzed, if you will, about
- 3:20myself in this moment. So he says my heart is not
- 3:23proud. And then he says my eyes, where
- 3:26I am looking, says it's not haughty, it's not high above,
- 3:32it's not exalted. A couple other translations have
- 3:35this phrase as my eyes are not raised high, they're not lifted
- 3:40up too far. And I see here, sometimes we can
- 3:46be. Even as I look at the remainder
- 3:48of verse one, sometimes we can believe as we look out at the
- 3:54full landscape of our world. We can go, man, everything is
- 3:58going so terribly. And I can see horrible things
- 4:01happening in Africa, and I can see horrible things being live
- 4:05streamed from the Middle East. And I can here on the news about
- 4:09a terrible thing in Minnesota. Or I can look at, you know,
- 4:14atrocities that are happening in Asia or as I think about South
- 4:19America and what they've been going through.
- 4:21God, it just feels like there is too much evil and wickedness and
- 4:26horrible things happening all around the world and we can lift
- 4:32our eyes up off of what we can actually like, do and be
- 4:37involved with and we can survey the entirety of humanity and we
- 4:42can despair. We can even start to judge God
- 4:47to say, God, why aren't you doing what I think I would do in
- 4:51this scenario? But David here says my eyes are
- 4:56not lifted up too far. God, I recognize the scope of
- 5:00what I can actually influence and handle.
- 5:04Can I encourage you? Just because you or I have a
- 5:08cell phone or have a computer, it does not mean that we should
- 5:13seek omniscience. God knows everything he desires
- 5:18to know, but he can handle it because he's God.
- 5:22You and I cannot handle it. We can't look at all of human
- 5:28evil and human suffering and not be deeply, tragically affected
- 5:35by it. Now I grow up in it's kind of
- 5:40the early stages of what's termed Gen.
- 5:42Z, which was really one of the first totally online generations
- 5:48and Generation Alpha, which I think ends, I think it might end
- 5:53about 20-30 or so. I, I'd have to look back at the,
- 5:57you know, charts of what the various generations are, are
- 6:02named and what those cut offs are.
- 6:06When people in my generation, when they look at the world,
- 6:10there is an assumption that you have to know everything and that
- 6:15you have to have an answer and an opinion and the right opinion
- 6:21on every single issue. And so they say you have to be
- 6:27an expert on the Middle East and the history and every war crime
- 6:34and every atrocity that has happened there.
- 6:37And you have to have the right opinion.
- 6:40And if you ask 5 different people, you're going to get 5
- 6:43different answers on what those solutions are.
- 6:47You hear about, you know, politics in America.
- 6:52There are just countless assumptions about what companies
- 6:58are to blame for a whole variety of things, what politicians are
- 7:04ultimately culpable in different errors in the world.
- 7:07And frankly, I want to tell you as a pastor, as someone that is
- 7:12part of Gen. Z, as someone that has seen what
- 7:16terminal omniscience quote, UN quote has meant for my
- 7:20generation, you cannot handle it.
- 7:23You have to turn off the news. You have to not see everything
- 7:30that happens in our world. I'm not saying that as in just
- 7:35bury your head in the sand and you'll be fine.
- 7:37No, there are some things that we truly probably need to know
- 7:41that will affect our lives day-to-day.
- 7:44As a pastor, there's an element of it where I need to stay a
- 7:47little bit abreast of what is happening so that I can, Lord
- 7:52willing, when people have questions, when they have
- 7:55concerns, when they, you know, want to know what is God's word
- 7:58say? Hopefully I can share from
- 8:01Scripture what Scripture has to say.
- 8:04But none of us were made for omniscience.
- 8:06And so I want to encourage you, don't let here, as David says,
- 8:10don't let your eyes be lifted up too far to where you attempt to
- 8:16take God's throne of omniscience, because here's the
- 8:20difference. God is all powerful.
- 8:23God is sovereign. He's in control.
- 8:25He's the one that can make all things right and we cannot.
- 8:32We are not sovereign. And so as we see all of
- 8:36humanity's evil and as we see the brokenness, it can only
- 8:41cause despair and heartbreak in US.
- 8:45However, God is the one that he's not fazed by it because he
- 8:49has his plan and he is moving all things for his glory and for
- 8:55the good of those that love him. And so I want to encourage you
- 8:59with that. Let God be God.
- 9:01Let God be omniscient. And with your media intake,
- 9:08endeavor to leave omniscience to God if it does not affect your
- 9:14day-to-day. If it does not, if there's
- 9:18nothing that you can do about it, then I want to encourage you
- 9:23hand it off to the Lord and say, God, you take care of this.
- 9:27I can't. And so I can be grieved at sin,
- 9:30I can be grieved at death, I can be maddened at evil, that Jesus
- 9:36will one day come and judge. But I cannot stay in any of
- 9:41those states. The only state that I can choose
- 9:44to be in is to surrender my emotions ultimately to the Lord,
- 9:50to say, God, you see, would you comfort, would you encourage,
- 9:54would you judge and take vengeance on?
- 9:57And that would be a very wise thing for us to pursue here.
- 10:01At the end of verse one, David says I do not get involved with
- 10:04things too great or too wondrous for me.
- 10:08I'm going to look at this word involved here.
- 10:10This is to go to walk, to behave in a specific place.
- 10:14He says, I'm not going to things that here great is Goodall.
- 10:20This is something that's it's like large, it's big.
- 10:24So the word, the the passage of scripture that I know most from
- 10:28this word is the book of Jonah where it's like 13 different
- 10:32times the word great shows up that it was a great fish, a
- 10:37great city, a great storm, a great sin.
- 10:41All of that is within that book. And so here David says there are
- 10:45things that are just frankly, it's too big.
- 10:47It's outside the scope of what I can do.
- 10:50And so I am not going to go there.
- 10:53I'm not going to get involved with it because I realize that
- 10:56I'm not God and he is the only one that can handle that.
- 11:00And then he says there are things even too wonderful for
- 11:04me. I love that in our life stories,
- 11:09God shows himself good time and time and time again.
- 11:14But as God does that we, as we observe from the outside, will
- 11:22not always see all of the good that takes place.
- 11:25We won't see the full happy resolution to each story that we
- 11:31pass on. I'm going to give one example
- 11:33real quick. So I had one of my professors in
- 11:35college was a man named Doctor Jim Shettler.
- 11:39And he had a sermon that he preached essentially on not
- 11:47taking up the offenses of others in a way that was unhealthy or
- 11:54unproductive. So when you know, my friend Jim
- 11:58and my friend Steve are at odds, well, I can be a peacemaker and
- 12:04I can bring Jim and Steve together to go.
- 12:06Listen, you love God, you love God, you love Steve, you love
- 12:10Jim. And so we, I, I believe that you
- 12:14guys, there's a misunderstanding right now, but you guys can
- 12:17restore this friendship. That's a kind of good,
- 12:20productive way to be involved to take up someone's offense that
- 12:26you are working together for reconciliation.
- 12:29There's sometimes though, where people just receive gossip from
- 12:33others and so then they begin to bear the same grudge and hurt
- 12:38towards someone that that the initial person did.
- 12:44So Jim tells me about the bad things that Steve did.
- 12:48And now both Jim and me are kind of have a chip on our shoulder
- 12:51about Steve. We're a little embittered
- 12:53against him while like, come on, Steve, that was a messed up
- 12:56thing you did or you shouldn't have said that.
- 12:58And So what Doctor Shuttler's message entailed was God might
- 13:05have it so that Jim reconciles with Steve and there's grace and
- 13:10there's forgiveness, and God's grace worked in an incredible
- 13:14way. And so now Jim and Steve are
- 13:16good. But if I'm not a part of all of
- 13:20those conversations, then I might still carry a chip on my
- 13:24shoulder against Steve that even the initial person that had the
- 13:27offense, Jim, he's already let go.
- 13:30He's already pardoned because he worked through all of that.
- 13:34And so he had a phrase, don't leave town on someone else's red
- 13:39wagon. He says, you know, leave town on
- 13:41your own red wagon here. There are things that are
- 13:46wonderful in life, great stories that are written that if we
- 13:51attempt to be too involved, because we're not omnipresent,
- 13:55we are not everywhere at all times.
- 13:59God may be working wonderful stories in Africa.
- 14:03He might be working great stories in Minnesota, He might
- 14:07be working some amazing things down in Venezuela.
- 14:11But because we are not omnipresent, we aren't seeing
- 14:14all the wonderful things that God is doing.
- 14:16And so we just see the catastrophe reel online.
- 14:21And so we This is why I would say, let's make sure that we are
- 14:26not spending inordinate amounts of time beholding things that
- 14:30are far beyond the scope of what we can see or understand or deal
- 14:34with, because we're not omniscient.
- 14:36So we don't understand everything that God's doing.
- 14:39And we are not omnipresent. So we don't see all the
- 14:42wonderful ways that God is working and making our world at
- 14:45peace. So here David, I'm going to read
- 14:48now this whole verse as one Yahweh.
- 14:50My heart is not proud. My eyes are not hot either.
- 14:53They're not lifted up. I do not get involved with
- 14:56things too great or too wondrous for me.
- 14:59Instead, I have calmed and quieted my soul like a weaned
- 15:04child with its mother. My soul is like a weaned child
- 15:09that now when B or EV are hungry, they do not cry like
- 15:15they used to cry as babies when they needed milk.
- 15:18Now they might still whine and go, hey, I want Reese's Puffs or
- 15:21whatever, but they do not cry in the way that they used to
- 15:25because they have been weaned. And so here David says, God, I
- 15:30trust in you. Like I hope I have a confident
- 15:34expectation that you will take care of it all.
- 15:37And so I don't have to worry about it.
- 15:39I don't have to survey it all. I don't have to go there and get
- 15:42involved and feel like I have to fix the world.
- 15:45I can just be in my corner of the world doing what I'm
- 15:49supposed to do. And my soul is quieted.
- 15:52It's calmed as a result of the fact that I firmly believe you
- 15:56are in charge. And if you will, Scripture often
- 15:59speaks about both the milk and the meat of the Word of God.
- 16:05And I think that we could draw that parallel here from first
- 16:09Peter 2 and from Hebrews, I think it's Hebrews 6, where the
- 16:13writer there mentions the meat of the word, the real substance,
- 16:17that through relying on the truth of the Word of God, it can
- 16:23bring peace into our crazy 21st century obsession with knowing
- 16:30and having a solution for everything.
- 16:32So what's the verse 3? Israel?
- 16:36Put your hope in Yahweh both now and forever.
- 16:40Put your hope in Yahweh both now and forever.
- 16:45I love that we can have a confident expectation in God
- 16:49because He's trustworthy and so we can tell that to as many
- 16:53people as we want. David went through some terribly
- 16:56hard things and if even his soul could be calmed and quieted
- 17:01through meditating on who God is and what God is capable of, and
- 17:05certainly we can experience that same piece as well.
- 17:09This David that dodged giants and head hunting kings and you
- 17:15know, 1000 different difficulties in his life.
- 17:19He tells us you can have a peace filled soul when you realize God
- 17:25is in control. God is working behind the scenes
- 17:28and so you can just worry about your tiny portion of existence
- 17:34in the universe and know that God is taking care of you and
- 17:38he's taking care of everything. Thanks for tuning in today.
- 17:41I hope you have a wonderful day. Next episode will be in Psalm 2.
