- 0:05Speaker 1: This is what the flux I'm Brad Justin and it's Friday.
- 0:08Speaker 2: They're twenty eighth of June jouseboit.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Earlier this week, inflation jumped to four percent, if you
- 0:13Speaker 1: don't mind, which was its highest rate in six months.
- 0:15Speaker 1: That's thanks to stubborn pricing for fruit and veggies as
- 0:19Speaker 1: well as electricity and juse boy, I did think i'd
- 0:21Speaker 1: say this, but investors reckon this now a one in
- 0:24Speaker 1: three chance of an August interest rate ride.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Not use that hour word one more time, Amaen.
- 0:28Speaker 1: That was my last time, Fleck Sam.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Do you know that ninety one percent of flux uses
- 0:31Speaker 2: who have downloaded flux Pro say they do not regret
- 0:34Speaker 2: the decision one iota.
- 0:36Speaker 1: I believe that and flex Sam.
- 0:37Speaker 2: If you haven't got flux Pro yet, now is the
- 0:39Speaker 2: right time because it's currently fifty percent off at the
- 0:41Speaker 2: end of the financial year. But it's only for the
- 0:43Speaker 2: next two days, so make sure you hit the link
- 0:45Speaker 2: in the show notes to get that fifty percent of.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Three droopy stories today Juzzy Boy for our first, Qatar
- 0:52Speaker 1: Airways is looking to acquire a twenty percent steak in
- 0:55Speaker 1: Virgin Australia, which could really shake up the aviation industry
- 0:59Speaker 1: just must be happy.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Jam right now, So tell me what's going on here, okay.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Qatar Airways, the international airline was established by the Katari
- 1:07Speaker 1: government back in nineteen ninety three.
- 1:08Speaker 2: And they man, it's been quite the success. It's won
- 1:11Speaker 2: the title of the world's best airline seven times in
- 1:14Speaker 2: the last eleven years, according to Skytrack's last year.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Qatar Airways was hoping to be a bigger player in
- 1:20Speaker 1: the Australian aviation market, but its proposal to.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Add twenty one extra international flights to Australia was denied
- 1:27Speaker 2: by the Federal.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Government, which led to a lot of controversy about whether
- 1:30Speaker 1: quantas played any part in this old thing.
- 1:33Speaker 2: But now Qatar is negotiating to take a twenty percent
- 1:36Speaker 2: stake in Virgin Australia.
- 1:37Speaker 1: And for this deal to go through, Qatar will need
- 1:39Speaker 1: approval from the Foreign Investment Review Board.
- 1:42Speaker 2: But even if further accepts this deal, it could still
- 1:45Speaker 2: be blocked by the Federal government.
- 1:47Speaker 1: So it does boy. If this deal does go through,
- 1:49Speaker 1: it could be just the indo x strategy Quitars looking
- 1:52Speaker 1: for to gain more access to the ossie market.
- 1:55Speaker 2: So what is the key learning here?
- 1:56Speaker 1: If you can't talk your way in buy your way
- 1:59Speaker 1: in Man.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Qatar didn't exactly take the government's rejection of its bid
- 2:03Speaker 2: for extra flights very well.
- 2:04Speaker 1: In fact, they called it very unfair, and the decision
- 2:08Speaker 1: was seen by many as a way to protect Quantus's
- 2:10Speaker 1: market share on international flights from Australia. So if Qatar
- 2:14Speaker 1: negotiating with the government isn't going to give Qatar more
- 2:16Speaker 1: access to the OSSI market, maybe being a part owner
- 2:20Speaker 1: of a domestic Australian airline will.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Which is exactly what Katar is hoping for.
- 2:24Speaker 1: And this is the strategy we've seen play out before.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Surely you've got an example in that big brain Eva.
- 2:28Speaker 2: I had to take you back to twenty nineteen when
- 2:30Speaker 2: Uber acquired Karine, which was the dominant ride sharing company
- 2:33Speaker 2: in the Middle East and parts of Northern Africa. They
- 2:35Speaker 2: quite have a three point one billion US dollars.
- 2:37Speaker 1: That was after Uber failed to dominate in the Middle
- 2:40Speaker 1: East itself, and so it brought its way in to
- 2:43Speaker 1: gain the upper hand in the regions where Kareem was operating.
- 2:46Speaker 1: For our second story, TikTok's owner has quietly released a
- 2:50Speaker 1: new social app called we as a Competitor to Instagram,
- 2:53Speaker 1: where you can take photos with filters and messages.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Now the social media app I cannot keep up, So
- 2:58Speaker 2: tell me what is happening here, okay.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Byte Dance is the Chinese company that owns TikTok.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Aka the social media app that got us all through lockdown.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Aka the social app that sent phrases like.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Brother ugh into the stratosphere.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Not to forget looking for a man in fine jasey boy,
- 3:12Speaker 1: you are a man who knows of TikTok.
- 3:14Speaker 2: But b man not. Everyone is getting behind this app
- 3:17Speaker 2: with its unhinged gen z humor yep.
- 3:19Speaker 1: US lawmakers are pushing to have the app band for
- 3:21Speaker 1: its one hundred and eighty million monthly active users, and.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Other countries might follow suit as well.
- 3:26Speaker 1: So now jazy boy, byte Dance has quietly launched a
- 3:28Speaker 1: new social app named Wei and be Man.
- 3:30Speaker 2: I've seen some of the pickies of we and it
- 3:32Speaker 2: is awfully similar to Instagram's lay app.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Bte Dance is keeping we really under wraps though.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Yeah. It hasn't run any ads on Apple and it
- 3:39Speaker 2: isn't available in Australia, the.
- 3:40Speaker 1: US, the UK just quietly are having a look here.
- 3:42Speaker 1: It's got less than ten thousand downloads globally.
- 3:44Speaker 2: But you've got to imagine this is all part of
- 3:46Speaker 2: TikTok's defensive plan to build up another asset just in
- 3:49Speaker 2: the case that TikTok gets crushed by the might of
- 3:52Speaker 2: the US Congress. Interesting, so what is the key learning
- 3:54Speaker 2: here in the game of risk? The smart money diversified jaziboy.
- 3:58Speaker 1: We know that companies like Facebook now known as Meta
- 4:01Speaker 1: have diversified over time with other products like Instagram and WhatsApp.
- 4:04Speaker 2: But right now By Dance is a bit of a
- 4:06Speaker 2: one trick pony with TikTok.
- 4:08Speaker 1: We know that the US is a major market for TikTok,
- 4:10Speaker 1: so having a total ban on the app in the
- 4:12Speaker 1: country would seriously impact their business.
- 4:14Speaker 2: So now they've started acting on a backup plan if
- 4:17Speaker 2: that band was to ever become real enter We. Interestingly,
- 4:21Speaker 2: they've beened WE isn't actually by Dancer's first backup plan.
- 4:24Speaker 1: No, it's already tried to back up the truck with
- 4:27Speaker 1: its pinterest slash Instagram like platform named Lemonade.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Which only has two point six million iOS users around
- 4:33Speaker 2: the world.
- 4:33Speaker 1: So maybe We is its last shot at glory in
- 4:36Speaker 1: the US, just in case the band actually goes through.
- 4:39Speaker 2: For our third and final story. The chairwoman of TESLA
- 4:42Speaker 2: and the owner of the NBL are the new majority
- 4:45Speaker 2: owners of the Australian Women's Basketball League.
- 4:47Speaker 1: An unlikely joe. You'd think Jesse boy. Next thing, Elon
- 4:50Speaker 1: Musk pulling on a guernsey too.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Tell me more? Okay? So the Women's National Basketball League
- 4:54Speaker 2: or the WNBL launch back in nineteen eighty one in Australia.
- 4:58Speaker 1: And since then it's been owned by b Basketball Australia
- 5:00Speaker 1: and be Man.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Over the past decade, basketball in Australia has skyrocketer yep.
- 5:05Speaker 1: In the NBA we've had Andrew Bogan, Patty Mills, Josh
- 5:08Speaker 1: Giddy and many many others.
- 5:09Speaker 2: And in a WNBA we've had Lauren Jackson and of
- 5:11Speaker 2: course Liz Cambidge as well.
- 5:13Speaker 1: In fact, women's basketball is now the third largest team
- 5:17Speaker 1: women's sport in Australia.
- 5:18Speaker 2: But off the field things have been a little more challenging.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Yeah, Basketball Australia hasn't really invested heavily in marketing or
- 5:25Speaker 1: sponsorships and game attendances.
- 5:27Speaker 2: But now Robin Denholm, the TESLA chairwoman, has taken a
- 5:30Speaker 2: forty nine percent steak in the Women's National Basketball League.
- 5:33Speaker 1: And Larry Kesselman, the owner of the NBL, has taken
- 5:36Speaker 1: a twenty two percent steak in this league.
- 5:38Speaker 2: So be man. Given the details, how much do they pay.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Well, it's hard to know at this stage, and you know,
- 5:43Speaker 1: I didn't know exactly, but it's believed that the value
- 5:45Speaker 1: of the whole league is somewhere around fifty mil.
- 5:47Speaker 2: And be Man. With the growing popularity of live sports
- 5:50Speaker 2: around the world, this could end up being a bargain buy,
- 5:53Speaker 2: I know.
- 5:53Speaker 1: So what's the key learning here?
- 5:54Speaker 2: Once a sporting code gets a good broadcast deal, it
- 5:57Speaker 2: elevates the competition to a whole new level.
- 5:59Speaker 1: And that's because live sports are far and away the
- 6:03Speaker 1: most popular thing on television.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Get this, Bmann. In twenty twenty three, the top ten
- 6:06Speaker 2: telecasts in the US were all major sporting events.
- 6:09Speaker 1: But in Australia it's even better. In twenty twenty three,
- 6:12Speaker 1: the top sixteen telecasts were all major sporting events.
- 6:15Speaker 2: And get this. Ten years ago there was just one
- 6:18Speaker 2: NBL game broadcast per week on Channel nine.
- 6:20Speaker 1: And now every single NBL game is broadcast live on ESPN.
- 6:24Speaker 2: So now the new owners goal will be to revitalize
- 6:27Speaker 2: the WNBL in the same way they've managed to do
- 6:30Speaker 2: with the NBL.
- 6:31Speaker 1: And with WNBL membership already up sixty nine percent year
- 6:34Speaker 1: on year, they've already got some tailwins behind them.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Man, you know, here's a fifty percent flux Pro for
- 6:39Speaker 2: the next two days.
- 6:40Speaker 1: I did mention that to myself quietly.
- 6:42Speaker 2: I can read your mind in flux am. If you
- 6:44Speaker 2: want to get amongst the action to get detailed insights
- 6:46Speaker 2: on your credit score, detailed breakdowns on your spending premium articles,

- 6:52Speaker 2: sure you hit the link in the show notes off.
