- 0:19All right. Well, before I introduce my
- 0:21guest, I know what you're all going to say.
- 0:23Herman, where are you at? I am at Brother Rusty's house,
- 0:29and he's got some badass stuff in the background.
- 0:32I hope it's not too blinding to you.
- 0:34He's got some killer trophies in the background.
- 0:37All right, listen, I'm jacked up on Mountain Dew about this one.
- 0:41I've had my eye on this man that you're looking at for a long
- 0:45time. Basically the greatest
- 0:47freestyle. I'd say motorcycle slash
- 0:51athlete. Just complete badass.
- 0:55The great Brian, Deegan Brian, welcome to Kenny conversation.
- 0:59Yeah, yeah. Thanks for having me.
- 1:01I have you know seen you around many years had our conversations
- 1:05and and I feel like yeah it's good that we could get together
- 1:08and actually have a a talk about I'm sure a lot of interesting
- 1:12things. So done a few things in my life
- 1:15as you have so met a lot of interesting people So it's yeah,
- 1:20it's been pretty cool so far. You're you're a lot more
- 1:23interesting than me and you listen I admire you that's my
- 1:28disclaimer. So I'm.
- 1:30I'm. I'm a big fan.
- 1:32You're awfully young. What are you you're 49 years old
- 1:35and you've already you've already done it all man.
- 1:39One thing I, I, I noticed when I first met you is I feel like you
- 1:44and I are are kind of the same. I was diagnosed hyperactive.
- 1:48They had me on Ritalin and I notice when I hang around and
- 1:51you're kind of twitching all over the place like like me, and
- 1:54I feel like, I feel like you're my brother, man.
- 1:58Did they have you on Ritland or anything?
- 2:01No. Well, you know, I grew up in
- 2:03Nebraska, small town. My dad ran the school system and
- 2:09he was one in this town in Nebraska, and he was the
- 2:13Superintendent of the school system.
- 2:15And so he was always, he grew up on a farm.
- 2:19So they they didn't believe in anything like any of that.
- 2:23It was like you're just going to figure it out.
- 2:25You're just weird, man. We're going to deal with treat
- 2:29you like an old cow. Yeah, usually.
- 2:31I just got a lot of, probably a lot of spankings from my mom.
- 2:35Yeah, well, me too. My my dad beat my ass and my
- 2:38mom, my mom would say come over here so I can slap you.
- 2:41And I went older to slap me. Yeah, that's my mom for sure.
- 2:44I'll never do that again. Yeah.
- 2:46Yeah. So, Brian, I want to brag on you
- 2:50right off the top. So your fans, I mean, I know
- 2:54your fan base is 1,000,000. What you got going on is big.
- 2:58But for a lot of people inside NASCAR that might not know about
- 3:02you, Terminator is going to put his two hundreds on because I'm
- 3:0560 years old. Yeah, they're.
- 3:06Coming. Mine are coming soon.
- 3:11All right, let's go at it. Brian Deegan, 49 years old, the
- 3:16most recognizable name in action sports.
- 3:20That's pretty bad ass freestyle motorcycle rider and we're going
- 3:26to get to the Global Rallycross later on.
- 3:29You went to four wheels around 2010, but first to ever do the
- 3:34twisting Backflip 360 in competition.
- 3:38The first ever to do something so wild. 10 medals in the X
- 3:43Games, 2 gold, 7 bronze and the only rider.
- 3:50Now this is the one that you, if I got it right.
- 3:52OK, you are the only rider to compete in one event in every X
- 3:57game ever. Is that right?
- 3:58Yeah, that's a pretty crazy stat considering all the injuries we
- 4:02went through. So, you know, Pastrana was my
- 4:05main nemesis, You know Travis and he really helped along, you
- 4:10know, with me and Metzger, a few other names to build the sport,
- 4:14to create it. And when you create a sport,
- 4:17there's a lot of innovation. So man, there was a lot of
- 4:20injuries, a lot of crashes, learning how to flip a dirt
- 4:24bike, you know, learning how to spin it, all this stuff.
- 4:27And man, you just get hurt a lot.
- 4:29And that was before the phone pits.
- 4:30So, you know, there was a lot of injuries.
- 4:33But somehow I figured out, I just knew I had to be at X Games
- 4:36every year for the, for the media.
- 4:38I've always understood media and I've always understood the value
- 4:42of it. So I just did everything I could
- 4:45never to miss X Games because we didn't have, there was no phones
- 4:48then, like there wasn't social media.
- 4:50And so that was our moment to shine, You know, like it's it's
- 4:54like you don't want to miss the Daytona 500 probably, right.
- 4:57No way. Right.
- 4:58Yeah. I want to add one more thing on
- 5:00to this. You're you're the Co founder of
- 5:02the Metal Militia clothing line, which is incredible, Is that
- 5:07right? Yeah that was a big big movement
- 5:09there in on the in the early 2000s kind of along with like No
- 5:13Fear and action sports and all the movements and there's a lot
- 5:17of brands that popped up in action sports at the time and we
- 5:20had me and a couple buddies just really put that name on our
- 5:23group of guys and it started it still is that today.
- 5:26Like it's just kind of if you ever looked at watch skate back
- 5:30in the day with Tony Hawk and and the it's called the Bones,
- 5:34the Bones Brigade and and they were the original like group.
- 5:37It's just a they're a group of skaters and it went on to be
- 5:41this legendary thing in a movie later.
- 5:43But either way my point is we had our group of guys that we've
- 5:47had our own facility called the Compound Freestyle Motocross
- 5:50Jumps and in a Long story short we pretty much invented all that
- 5:54stuff back in the late 90s and and we that name on our group
- 5:59and and it was just a group of friends and and having fun
- 6:02riding dirt bikes rebel guys on dirt bikes wearing wearing black
- 6:05you know and that was kind of the the old style and and and it
- 6:09blew up and like everyone kind of got a or did get attracted to
- 6:13it and then ESPN ran with it and Travis was really really was the
- 6:16good guy back then young all American kid we were more of the
- 6:20rebel guys in black and and he's good versus evil that old saying
- 6:26and and man so anyway that thing blew up and we and I figured out
- 6:30through business and marketing and and how to create the
- 6:32clothing line and and turn it into this big business and it
- 6:35went on to make stupid money and and I you know end up licensing
- 6:39it. It's a big it's a big
- 6:40corporation and I learned a lot in business.
- 6:43It taught me I, you know I never went to college and it's just I
- 6:47think I've learned more than any guy in college when it comes to
- 6:49business marketing and business law everything you because you
- 6:54know you have the goods and the bads and anyway it was a it was
- 6:57a good run and it's still going today.
- 6:59It's still a 7 figure online business which is crazy that has
- 7:04stood this. I mean it's been around I don't
- 7:06know how long is it, that's like since 99 it started so you know
- 7:09almost 25 years now. So it's crazy.
- 7:14Yeah, well I watched the videos, I watched it and I said, man,
- 7:19what a gangly, bad ass hardcore group.
- 7:22I mean, the things you all were doing with motorcycles were
- 7:27incredible. Now I got, you know, Kenny
- 7:29conversation. We we call all these audibles,
- 7:32you know, we go every which way. So you've already brought up so
- 7:36much and I just want to piggyback on something you
- 7:40brought up. Now this was from Jamie Little.
- 7:44We talked to Jamie a week ago and she says when this is what
- 7:48Jamie said, and I want you to respond to it, she said When you
- 7:52first came in, Brian Deegan was this quiet, independent guy, won
- 7:58a race and then created this character, like this attitude.
- 8:03And she said every once in a while she felt like she could
- 8:06get the old Brian. But she said you became this
- 8:10character. Is she right?
- 8:15Yeah, I get. I get, 'cause she was, she's
- 8:17been around our, our scene with action sports since the
- 8:21beginning. She was one of the ones that
- 8:23helped really build it, too, with with her, you know, social
- 8:26or with her marketing and her by announcing and and commentating.
- 8:31So that is true. Because I did come from, you
- 8:36know, a small town in Nebraska. You know, I had those roots.
- 8:40You know, I went through very tough times when my mom left
- 8:44when I was about 10 or 11, just got up and took off, and I was
- 8:47more mama's boy than my dad was at work every day.
- 8:50Buddy, I'm sorry about that. Yeah, but that's life you know.
- 8:53And and my my dad was stern like business guy, you know.
- 8:58It wasn't very emotional. Never, you know, it wasn't I
- 9:00love you or nothing like that. It was just like business.
- 9:03But he was very, very caring and you know, really saw because I
- 9:08loved racing. So he took me racing.
- 9:09But my point is I end up doing a documentary called Bloodline
- 9:14eventually with Paul Tobley who who is really good at doing
- 9:18documentaries usually through Monster Energy And and it told
- 9:22the story of of the small town kid coming out to the California
- 9:26to chase his dream and my backdrop of where I why I was
- 9:30who I was. You know, I went through a lot
- 9:32of really tough family things I didn't realize till later and it
- 9:36and it hardened me. You know, it wasn't till later
- 9:39that I had a family later that I was around a stable, stable
- 9:44family members and stable parents and that I realized what
- 9:48I had gone through as a young as a young age.
- 9:51And and it did, it did scar me and it did make me hard.
- 9:57And so like you know I me being that character, the the
- 10:02character, the bad guy, I think it was real at that air of my
- 10:08life and and I think I really was on a bad one.
- 10:13I really was angry and I was really taking it out on the
- 10:18world. And then that's how wide this
- 10:21group fit me at the time. And you go through different
- 10:24chapters in life and and I feel like that was one of my
- 10:27chapters. And yes, there was still this
- 10:29kid inside me that, you know, wanted to have fun and be be
- 10:35nice and and you know, get the best out of people.
- 10:39And I feel like that was always in me.
- 10:41But I did go through a run of about 10 years where we were on
- 10:45a mission like we're we're burning a lot of bridges.
- 10:49So that was like, yeah, part of that era, you know?
- 10:52But man, you've you've done so good.
- 10:54So you, you've done what I call. You've overcome, prevailed.
- 10:58You made yourself don't know where your mom's at.
- 11:02That's a whole nother conversation, buddy.
- 11:04She she'd be proud of you and and if she ain't she's missing
- 11:08out because you've done all this on your own and that that leads
- 11:12me to this basically. And straighten me out.
- 11:16I I feel like it. And you gave credit to Travis
- 11:19Pastrana too. Do you ever remember that time?
- 11:24I mean, because I remember I was born in 1963 and I had never
- 11:28heard of X Games in my life and and I remember when it started.
- 11:34So in my opinion, you guys started a new sport.
- 11:39Do you, do you remember when you said to yourself, holy crap, you
- 11:43know, there's baseball, there's football and we're starting a
- 11:46new sport. Do you?
- 11:48Do you ever remember? Do you?
- 11:49Remember that time for sure. Tell me about that.
- 11:54I I grew up racing dirt bikes. Supercross, motocross.
- 11:58I was a privateer, which basically means I didn't have
- 12:01the OEM support and I went to California, brought my dirt bike
- 12:06when I graduated high school. I just I didn't have much money
- 12:09at all. I had to live on my race
- 12:11winnings and I just chased that dream for like 2-3 years.
- 12:15I got I got on a a support team. I I wanted to be a factory rider
- 12:19so bad and and I just worked super hard.
- 12:22I remember training every day. It's the one thing I could do
- 12:25with that I didn't take a lot of money is I just really worked
- 12:27hard and and end up going and getting finally had a chance to
- 12:34be a factory rider. They ended up giving the ride to
- 12:36someone else and it really upset me and I and I had a bad
- 12:40attitude for sure. Like I didn't have a good
- 12:41attitude. I wasn't the social guy to cool.
- 12:43That was cool to everyone. I was more like why?
- 12:46Why not, Why not me. You know that attitude and and
- 12:50so everyone passed me out and and I got really upset and
- 12:53that's when I end up teaming up with team Moto Triple X which is
- 12:56this edgy punk rock team, went out won the LA Supercross ghost,
- 13:00rode my bike over the finish and kind of I just kind of in
- 13:04fashion. I just heard this about your
- 13:07boy. That that word right there.
- 13:09Ghost Rd. Ghost Rd., the bike which is I I
- 13:13don't know I you guess you can comparably say maybe like
- 13:17Chastain railing the wall or something that just you know it
- 13:20wasn't legal you're just like yeah whatever.
- 13:23And so that's kind of the my was my going out of racing moment
- 13:29and then I went, we were started doing tricks on dirt bikes at
- 13:32that point. So we were out in the hills
- 13:34doing like, you know these BMX trips tricks on our dirt bikes,
- 13:38but over like 100 foot jumps, big dirt jumps.
- 13:40That's the videos I watched. I was amazed.
- 13:43Yeah, so that's the original video series that helped launch
- 13:46Action Sports, which was Crested Demons of Dirt.
- 13:50Their original VHS tapes is showing the riders partying
- 13:55having fun, the real stuff behind the scenes and not just
- 13:59the racing. And those videos blew up like
- 14:02every everyone had those videos. And so then once that started
- 14:05that movement started going of us doing that.
- 14:08I started getting offers from companies to pay like
- 14:11sponsorship deals from like Etny shoes and you know a Volcom by
- 14:15back then Volcom was just starting And so they're they're
- 14:19often to pay me just to be a free rider and I'm like man this
- 14:22is crazy like and so I thought OK this I can't make a living on
- 14:26this money but it's at least keeping me going.
- 14:29And then we created this freestyle park in our buddy's
- 14:32yard and ESPN end up calling and said hey we want you to create
- 14:38bring that to X Games and make an event.
- 14:40So as a group you know everyone put it together did the judging
- 14:44system and brought it to to San Francisco 99 X Games.
- 14:48When I showed up there and rolled in and you see our
- 14:51freestyle park on the Bay and next to BMX skate Tony Hawk and
- 14:55and mirror Nyquist and and I used to watch those guys because
- 14:58X Games. X Games was on since 95.
- 15:03So we came in at 99. Those guys were already heroes.
- 15:06Like, I already thought like these dudes are big time that
- 15:09have been in action sports and so we we show up and do
- 15:14thousands of fans, man. And and I was like, we started
- 15:17riding and they all came running to where we were, 'cause our
- 15:20jumps were massive and like it, it dwarfed everything.
- 15:24And the dirt bikes, the dirt bikes revving and they all came
- 15:29running and and that's when I started riding that event.
- 15:31I'm like, dude, we've done it. This is it.
- 15:34Like we freaking are on the cusp and probably the biggest thing
- 15:37to ever hit dirt bikes right now and and it's Snowball.
- 15:41And that's when I met. That's when I met Mark Hall who
- 15:44originally went on to create Monster that that day and he
- 15:49came to me he's like hey do you want could I sponsor you with
- 15:51Hanson's energy and and I and I was like we were anti corporate
- 15:55all in black like kind of skater vibe like you know F everyone
- 15:59and and he and I'm like no I can't I don't want to have some
- 16:01corporate cheesy sponsor on my bike you know.
- 16:04You really were a rebel. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 16:06I don't want your money. Yeah.
- 16:09And that and that was anti like we were anti because we were the
- 16:12militia and we were like so so anyway it turned into he could
- 16:17he was turned up being a really nice dude and he was like hey
- 16:20he's like I can pay you. And I and I, we were just
- 16:23getting by barely and and like we hadn't started making the big
- 16:26money yet and and and he's like I can give you 2500 bucks a
- 16:29month and I was like what I was like.
- 16:32That was like big money. I was like.
- 16:35We could party on that. That's like good money.
- 16:39And so I ended up going to meet with him and we talked about
- 16:42everything and he ended up putting Hansen's energy like a
- 16:46helmet. Did a helmet for me with
- 16:48Hansen's Energy on it, which was one of the first energy drink
- 16:50deals done period in the sport. Which later moved on a year
- 16:55later to taste testing drinks and and Logan designs in those
- 16:59meetings with Mark. And it turned into Monster
- 17:01Energy because they wanted a more edgy brand.
- 17:04I mean, you really were there from the beginning.
- 17:06From the very beginning was the first athlete.
- 17:09They printed graphics for me, put them on my bike.
- 17:11They were like off color. They weren't really with the
- 17:13correct color yet and it was in the beginnings of the whole
- 17:16movement of that of the drink. So yeah, that was, I mean that's
- 17:19one chapter, one chapter in the story.
- 17:22But yeah, it's like when that was happening, we were started
- 17:25making good money and it it's like we made it, man.
- 17:30We we made, we've created this and we made it like it was.
- 17:33That was the movement, you know? I I think what my take away from
- 17:37that is, is you guys started being gnarly big jumps and you
- 17:43said the whole crowd left the skateboarders and ran over to
- 17:46you. Yeah.
- 17:47What was that a pivotal moment you you obviously you talk about
- 17:50it. Do you think that's the moment
- 17:52that you became bigger than what they had going on?
- 17:56Yes, I feel like we we sold the show for.
- 18:00Sure. Yeah.
- 18:01That's what I mean. Yeah.
- 18:02Yeah, we. Sold the show and we knew how to
- 18:06run with it, right? Like, yeah, give me one SEC, my
- 18:10little dogs. No, you're fine, man.
- 18:11The dog dogs are great part of the show.
- 18:14Don't. Don't.
- 18:15That's it. Hey people, like a Look inside
- 18:18your life And what's that dog's name?
- 18:21Come here, Audie. This is my wife's little dog.
- 18:23Come here. Let.
- 18:24Me See that there's there's one of your boys.
- 18:29For. That.
- 18:30Yeah. Hey, I I even followed up on
- 18:34you, buddy. You're going to be a motocross,
- 18:35aren't you? Motocross what?
- 18:38Are you going to do? I'm not the good one.
- 18:44Now, hold on, hold on. You all start with H What do you
- 18:48you got? You got Haley Hayden.
- 18:50You're Hudson. You're 12 years old, right?
- 18:5314. 14 Now I'm two years behind. I think you're don't say you're
- 18:58not good. I I think you're good.
- 19:00You're going to be good at whatever you decide to do.
- 19:03Yeah, no, he's into a lot of things.
- 19:05We we did, we did the dirt bike stuff with him for a while.
- 19:08I had a couple of big crashes that were pretty scary and and
- 19:12he does a lot of stuff with. He's building an online store
- 19:15now and and he's really into marketing and the sales of
- 19:20everything, so. You're you're going to be what
- 19:23we call the bean counter. You're going to control all your
- 19:25family's money? Yeah, So he may actually be the
- 19:32one that's the smart one, so. So, so anyway, first of all,
- 19:37thank thanks for letting us see your youngest one.
- 19:40That's pretty cool. So you you accidentally go to
- 19:45school, you don't know you're in school, doesn't make sense.
- 19:49And you create this social media empire.
- 19:53YouTube slash YouTube. I talked to your daughter.
- 19:59You allowed me to interview Haley, you know, last year, and
- 20:04she gave you all the credit. She said My dad, you know,
- 20:09started all this. Tell me about this moment.
- 20:13And then you talked about the VH tapes, you know, years ago.
- 20:16Tell me about this moment that you understood the power of
- 20:20YouTube and in creating all these shows.
- 20:23I admire you. And we're all doing.
- 20:25We're all following you now. We really.
- 20:28Are, Yeah. I feel like YouTube was
- 20:32something we got into. I mean this had to be 2010 is
- 20:39kind of when we we were on we were on the road and I spend so
- 20:43much time with my kids taking them to the races.
- 20:46It's really started. I had to almost forfeit my
- 20:49career because I was racing rally cars off road trucks.
- 20:53You know my budget. There are 7 figure budgets to go
- 20:55race. So I mean it was big it was big
- 20:57legit deals and and I mean that's something I could still
- 21:00be doing to this day. You know it's, you know in cars
- 21:04you can race to. You know you can race till
- 21:06you're, you know a lot older. And I'm sixty.
- 21:09Yeah, yeah exactly. And if.
- 21:11You don't I. Hey, if you have the name and
- 21:15you have what you've built, you know you can just keep racing
- 21:18and people love to see you. So my point is I really
- 21:21sacrificed a lot of that to go focus on my kids development in
- 21:26their racing and and so along the way I'm like how can we tell
- 21:30this story you know and how can I keep my sponsors happy that
- 21:35we're still putting out media we're still making a value
- 21:39because originally on my values were always in competing in
- 21:42racing or or doing X Games. And so I thought OK my marketing
- 21:47mind's spinning. I'm like well we got to create a
- 21:49show on YouTube that tells the story of of how I'm you know
- 21:54traveling the United States with the kids and building this
- 21:57racing careers and and with Haley and and that started with
- 22:02the cars and then Hayden was in the motocross and and people
- 22:06really jumped into it and they you know enjoyed hearing the
- 22:09story because it was a unique race family story and which we
- 22:13see a lot of in our world. But it was it was enough to get
- 22:18views and enough to turn enough money to help offset the you
- 22:23know the loss of sponsorships and race wins to keep the
- 22:27machine going, you know and just keep going to the races and and
- 22:31you know it was just turned into a good system.
- 22:34So either way it helped us build a strong YouTube presence very
- 22:37strong social media platforms which you know years ago.
- 22:40I just know I remember just remember hearing many times like
- 22:44so and I listen to Gary Vee and other just a lot of other
- 22:47talking successful men on podcast.
- 22:51I got really into the podcast thing for a little while and
- 22:54just so I just really knew that everyone's preaching the power
- 22:57of social media, the power of content.
- 22:59And that was 10 years ago and I said, OK, I'm going to go down
- 23:02that path and we have that content for 10.
- 23:05I have hard drives or just content, so which will be
- 23:08valuable forever and and you know, so anyhow that was kind of
- 23:13our movement with YouTube. It's still going on our channel,
- 23:15the deacons, that's our family channel.
- 23:18Haley's with Don, her channel. And then we created an another
- 23:22channel called Deegan's Unleashed, which was just more
- 23:25throwing crap at the wall. See what works, what doesn't,
- 23:28and just kind of for fun. So that's kind of our movement.
- 23:32It it's incredibly entertaining. You're the innovator.
- 23:36I want to say something strange to you.
- 23:38I think it's a little strange, but I want you to comment on it.
- 23:41So years ago, my brother Mike Wallace shared something with
- 23:45me. And you know, years ago you had
- 23:48traveling circuses and it was called Barnum Bailey.
- 23:52And the man that created, the man that created Barnum Bailey,
- 23:55he says, and here's the quote. And I want you to comment on
- 23:59this. You know what happens when we
- 24:01don't advertise this? Deep pause, nothing.
- 24:06And then, you know, Barnum Bailey.
- 24:09So I like what you're saying there because you're saying
- 24:13that, you know, through the ups and downs, you, you're
- 24:16advertising your family, you're keeping your family out there.
- 24:19And if you don't do any of that, nothing happens.
- 24:24What do you think about that, that that phrase he said you
- 24:27know, 100 years ago, Nothing happens if you don't advertise
- 24:32yourself. Yeah, and I agree.
- 24:34I've always understood the power of marketing and once I got to
- 24:38California and was trying to make it racing and the racing
- 24:42wasn't working for me, I just couldn't get the good equipment
- 24:46and whatever the reasons were And I just saw there's another
- 24:51value in the marketing and as in selling your image and building
- 24:55this persona. And so that to me became super
- 24:59relevant. And as my kids started racing,
- 25:03I'm like, OK, how do you become a top racer, a good racer, and
- 25:07have the marketing asset to it too?
- 25:09Because those are the two things you need and and if you can have
- 25:12both of those, you're going to be the most valuable.
- 25:15And so that's why I really try to push into the marketing
- 25:19aspect of but there's, you know, with the family, it's it's a
- 25:22fine line. You know you only, you don't
- 25:24only want to show so much you want to show.
- 25:26Like for me, I just showed a lot of stuff at the races.
- 25:28I try not to do too much personal life, a little bit here
- 25:32there, you know, which now I think it's become more and now
- 25:35the kids are older. So it's yeah, it's the most
- 25:39valuable thing I think in Motorsports besides winning and
- 25:42because there's only one winner race, you know, and the rest
- 25:45have to figure out how to get their name out there.
- 25:47So, yeah, yeah, I think marketing is probably the most
- 25:51important thing in in in business.
- 25:53Well, you know, I have people come up to me all the time, you
- 25:58know, and they say my my kids won 8 championships.
- 26:02He's 8 years old. And I said, I tell him, I said
- 26:05get in line because the young thing is now normal.
- 26:08You know, like I said, I'm older than you, but years ago, you
- 26:12know, here's Jeff Gordon at 8 years old running a full blown
- 26:16Sprint car. Now now they're all eight years
- 26:20old running full blown. So it's like how do you stand
- 26:22out? And I I this is a statement I
- 26:25believe you have done the best job in the world at at you're a
- 26:32winning family. You all win.
- 26:34You're a winner your your daughter your boys you all win.
- 26:39So I just want to let you know you know that and I know I keep
- 26:45saying it but you're an innovator man and that's why I I
- 26:47appreciate you being on Kenny conversation you're so listen I
- 26:51want, I want to turn a little not dark, but I don't want you
- 26:55to get mad at me. I want to take a shot at this.
- 26:59You know you made World News when when you had a really bad
- 27:02wreck. You know you had a near fatal
- 27:06accident is what what the story reads.
- 27:08I read the articles and after attempting A backflip you lost a
- 27:13kidney and four pints of blood. And I don't want this to be a
- 27:18long question, but I just want to say this.
- 27:19I see what a good Christian man you are, and I see how beautiful
- 27:25you are to your family. It is said that that wreck where
- 27:30you almost killed yourself change you.
- 27:33Tell me about that time. Yeah, for sure.
- 27:36It's it's a moment in my a moment in time.
- 27:40But it was one of the most pivotal moments and I had.
- 27:44I'd grown up in a small town, went to church on the weekends.
- 27:47My dad would take us to a Catholic Church and and we I
- 27:52felt like we just went because it was a right.
- 27:54Like right. It just looked good like for the
- 27:56family to do that. I don't we there was really no
- 27:58ever super connection there and you know I actually dreaded
- 28:02going to be honest it was so boring sitting in the pews and
- 28:05stuff and and so it really turned me away from it.
- 28:08Let's be honest. Hyperactive.
- 28:10Yeah. And so I went out through my
- 28:12life. Eventually we start racing every
- 28:14weekend which cancelled that out and then but as always you know
- 28:20always intrigued by that but I went through that as you know
- 28:24tough times and was the rebel guy and I really pushed away
- 28:28from it and I and but it was you know and then I met Marisa which
- 28:33later became my wife and she her parents were Christian and they
- 28:38were real welcoming and as much as I was like the rebel guy or
- 28:41did whatever I did they were always always forgiving and
- 28:45welcoming and I was so I was intrigued by that and and so but
- 28:49I was still that guy and and so we went through these these
- 28:54years of of I think struggle really of just trying to find
- 28:59find my place and and then Haley you know Haley was born and then
- 29:05that was a big pivotal moment that I I was like man I really
- 29:10need to be a dad I really need to you know focus on you know
- 29:14that aspect because my mom leaving I just you know really
- 29:18taught me like you know really need to be there as a parent and
- 29:22and so we we go to I go and it was I would say Haley was
- 29:29probably 2-2 or three years old and I go to do the show MTV Viva
- 29:33la bam. It's a it was kind of the big
- 29:35thing, like Jackass style. I remember it.
- 29:37Videos with Johnny Knoxville and all.
- 29:40So they invite the militia out there to Pennsylvania to their
- 29:44spot. So we go out there we're all
- 29:46riding dirt bikes. They're they're skateboarding on
- 29:48the on the show and they have bands playing and and they
- 29:52wanted me to backflip over the band and and it was really
- 29:55really windy that day like crazy like crosswinds and and I wasn't
- 30:00going to do it. I'm like, yeah, I'm going to do
- 30:02it, dude. It's too, too windy and they're
- 30:04and they just kind of said, I thought, well, you could do it,
- 30:06just kind of a little pressure situation that happens and I'm
- 30:09like, all right, well screw it, all right.
- 30:12So I go for it and I flip and the bike under rotates and I hit
- 30:15the top of the landing like like bounce off the top of the
- 30:19landing and and handlebars end up hitting my stomach really
- 30:22hard and going up under my rib cage and popping my kidney and
- 30:26my spleen and basically exploding it and it ripped it
- 30:30off the arteries. And so I fell on the ground.
- 30:33I felt like I got a shot in the stomach.
- 30:34It was burning hot stomach started growing bleeding inside
- 30:37a ton. And and they had no ambulance
- 30:40there. And so I end up finally 45
- 30:44minutes later get in my fire truck like, and they take me to
- 30:48the hospital And at this point I'm barely barely awake like
- 30:52falling asleep And and I just remember like I was chewing my
- 30:56tongue like trying to stay awake like it was it was brutal.
- 30:59And I just like I knew if I fell asleep like that was it.
- 31:02And I and I was like laying there.
- 31:04I'm like just just going man is my gonna really die right now.
- 31:09And and and thinking about, you know, my wife, my kids at this
- 31:13point it was just Haley and she was 3.
- 31:16So we make it to the hospital emergency surgery.
- 31:19Like doctors are all around and they rushed me in because I
- 31:22didn't have much of A pulse left And and it's real light.
- 31:26And I go in and the doctor leans over me and just is like, hey I
- 31:29just remember as an Indian Dr. and I just will never forget his
- 31:32face and he had a mask on and he's like, I'm going to go in
- 31:36and and see what's going on. He's like you have very light
- 31:38pulse. He's like we're going to do
- 31:40everything we can. He's like is there anything you
- 31:42want to tell your family. He's And I was like Oh my gosh.
- 31:46This is like I'm going to die and and I and I said just tell
- 31:50him I love him and and I was like in that moment and I I just
- 31:55remember sitting like looking up and just going please God like
- 32:00if you're real if if this is the moment I go this is it.
- 32:05I'm changing. I'm all in.
- 32:07Like, I'm not just makes. I don't want to die.
- 32:10And I was like, I want to live, you know.
- 32:12And I was like, this will be my pivotal changing moment.
- 32:16And it was, dude, it's heavy. Like it's hard for me to even
- 32:19think about it anymore. So.
- 32:21I'm I'm nauseous right now. This is incredible.
- 32:23Keep going. Keep going.
- 32:26I like really think hard into it.
- 32:27It literally makes me tear up because because it's such a
- 32:31heavy moment like and I it's easy for me to move on and and
- 32:36have so much other stuff happen in my life.
- 32:37But that was probably the biggest moment of my life as far
- 32:40as like a reality. Like nothing becomes more real
- 32:44when your life's about to end right.
- 32:46And and not many people have that moment that helps them
- 32:51change, right. A lot of people have to do it
- 32:54just on, oh, I should change and don't don't get put into like
- 32:58the final moment. And so for me, that was it.
- 33:02And and I just prayed I was like, come to God, please.
- 33:05You know, I don't want to die because at that point I really
- 33:07thought I'm going to go under. I'm probably not going to wake
- 33:10up and and so I mean it was I was barely hanging on like
- 33:14chewing my tongue like falling like barely awake and and but I
- 33:18remember what he said and and so and I went to sleep and I just
- 33:23remember waking up and I was like Oh yes.
- 33:25I was just so happy that I woke up and I was in the hospital.
- 33:29Tubes. Tubes everywhere.
- 33:30They cut my stomach all the way down.
- 33:32They pulled all my organs out. Put them back in.
- 33:35Yeah. Like laid them all out to like
- 33:37all every organ one at a time till they find what's wrong and
- 33:41so and and they put everything back and I had tubes everywhere
- 33:45and my wife was in the room my dad was in the room.
- 33:47This was on the East Coast like by the that surgery was so long
- 33:51that they had time to fly from California to Pennsylvania and
- 33:55they were in the room when I woke up So that that was like it
- 33:59was like a 12 hour surgery so and the guy like literally after
- 34:04that I just called the guy at the doctor and I say hey thanks
- 34:07I go thanks for saved my life. I go because that was that that
- 34:10was a fight you know it's a I'm sure it was not easy for that
- 34:14many hours to to to get my body going and and so that was my
- 34:19that was the pivotal moment man. I just at that moment I said I'm
- 34:23done boom turn and we're in the hospital the story isn't done.
- 34:27So I'm in the hospital for weeks because the recovery in this
- 34:32hospital was pretty run down like wasn't top, top of the
- 34:35line. And my wife's like, oh man, we
- 34:37just got to get out of here is. And so she started feeling sick
- 34:40and just got really sick and then she found out she was
- 34:43pregnant with with Hayden in the hospital and and I'm like, man,
- 34:49that's crazy like imagine if things would have went the other
- 34:52way, right? Like.
- 34:53The whole moment. I just pivotal like I'm like
- 34:56there's too many coincidence here to just blow it off you
- 34:59know and and so that was every moment I was like just I feel
- 35:04there was God just showing me like boom, boom boom boom all
- 35:08these things that are important and and going OK here's your
- 35:12chance and so you know I went home recovering and and I'll
- 35:17never forget I got home and I set stitches everywhere.
- 35:20I was a brutal flight home and and I they they 'cause they told
- 35:24me not to fly home and I'm like, dude, I'm going home.
- 35:27They didn't even want me to leave the hospital.
- 35:29This is probably wasn't the smartest.
- 35:30I called the cab and went down and left the hospital after two
- 35:34weeks because I'm like I can't be in here any longer.
- 35:36This is is brutal. So I go down and say if you get
- 35:39on a flight there's a chance your insides could could start
- 35:42bleeding and you won't make it till you till you hit the
- 35:44ground. And these are things I don't
- 35:46really talk about. I just remember now.
- 35:47But so I'm like, we're going. And I remember trying to get on
- 35:52the flight and I looked like I look like death, like I was
- 35:55skinny white, like like I was like been in a hospital for two
- 35:59weeks. I still have my gown on.
- 36:01No, you did not. Yes, and they because I.
- 36:04Jumped in the cab and. Failed.
- 36:06I just pinned it one day I was like, I'm out of here boom and
- 36:09and they didn't want to release me and so I basically went to
- 36:13the airport with me and Marisa and I got on the flight and they
- 36:16went let me on the plane. They're like, they're like, no,
- 36:19What's really like, are you OK? And I'm like, yeah, I just
- 36:21crashed on my motorcycle and and they're like, Are you sure?
- 36:25I'm like, yeah. And this is kind of before it
- 36:27got crazy flying, you know, And and they said, OK, so they let
- 36:32me on the plane and I got on. I just never fly.
- 36:34And there's like turbulence. And I'm just laying there going
- 36:37on my house like, don't this is bad.
- 36:40And anyway, I land, get to the house.
- 36:42I just remember Haley hadn't seen me for a while comes
- 36:45running over and jumps right on my stomach and I'll never forget
- 36:49that and I felt because I felt so bad because she just got
- 36:54super scared and she started crying and.
- 36:56I was like. And I was scared because it
- 36:58jumped right on my right, on my stitches.
- 37:00And I was like because I just didn't want to start bleeding
- 37:02again. Anyway, these are all little
- 37:04things that are popping back to me.
- 37:06And that was the, you know, that was my moment, change, boom,
- 37:09going to church. I had a few moments before that
- 37:12where that were near death but it wasn't enough obviously to
- 37:15change and but this was so I changed that kind of basically I
- 37:19had to tell my friends that I hung out with that were you
- 37:22know, not, you know, the best quality friends like hey I'm
- 37:26can't hang out. I can not going to do that.
- 37:28I'm, you know, I'm going to go. I got to start, you know,
- 37:30focusing on you know what the family stuff and everything I'm
- 37:34doing. It was a tough one that you know
- 37:36after being this certain person for so long and having this
- 37:40whole group of people for so long.
- 37:42That was a tough transition but it had to be done and and there
- 37:46was moments that is like you know pulled me the other way.
- 37:50I got pulled this way and pulled that way and I felt like man
- 37:53there was there was a very tough battle for me.
- 37:56But eventually when I got through that, that was the best
- 37:58decision and I really started focusing on my family and and I
- 38:03feel like it was the the, the right, the right path, you know,
- 38:07and like where we are today, you know, not saying I'm perfect, by
- 38:10no means. I'm still make all kinds of
- 38:12stupid mistakes and do dumb stuff all the time.
- 38:15But yeah, that that was a big, pivotal moment.
- 38:19So that you just gave the definition of a real man, a man,
- 38:24and that takes care of his family.
- 38:26Yeah, I have three daughters. First of all, I've never, I can
- 38:30never relate with. Well, I mean, you know, I've had
- 38:34some pretty bad wrecks, you know, but I'm not even going to
- 38:38compare to you. But so as I listen to you, you
- 38:43asked God to save your life and he did.
- 38:48So that would have been pretty stingy if you didn't straighten
- 38:52your yourself up. Because he saved your life.
- 38:54He gave Doctor the brains, the wisdom to save your life.
- 38:59You know that you thank the Doctor and you're still crazy.
- 39:05You you escape out of the hospital with your hospital gown
- 39:08on. I feel like writing a script for
- 39:10a movie. Yeah, I know, right?
- 39:14Yeah, it's a. There needs to be a movie made
- 39:16about you have we do, we have We had one.
- 39:19Yeah, it's a there's a documentary that we did and this
- 39:22was right as Haley was probably 8, just turning 18 when she was
- 39:27with with Toyota like development programs.
- 39:30So that's what I remember. The movie ends in just her going
- 39:33to NASCAR. So that was four years ago.
- 39:36It was ended. Where can we find that at?
- 39:39So it's on, it's on, it's on YouTube now.
- 39:43It was on iTunes. It's on all the platforms
- 39:47basically just go to YouTube, search Brian Deegan, Bloodline.
- 39:50Oh, wow. OK.
- 39:51Yeah, it's a bloodline. They'll tell you.
- 39:53It's a great story. It's not just, hey, these are
- 39:55the things that happened in my life.
- 39:56It's actual story. And and it starts with, you
- 39:59know, me as a kid in Nebraska and paints this picture with all
- 40:02all these all these old pictures from when I was a kid and tells
- 40:06the story of where I came from, my family.
- 40:08It interviews my mom, interviews my dad and and it gets
- 40:13interviews everyone, I mean Reese's parents, her, the kids.
- 40:17It's it's very, very well done. If you didn't know me and you
- 40:21watched it, I think you'd still be like, yeah, that's a good
- 40:23documentary. So it's definitely worth the
- 40:27watch. Everyone that's ever watched it
- 40:29is like, hey, that was a good story.
- 40:31And I I've used it. When I meet, like, say I meet
- 40:36execs, corporate guys that are like for a business deal, for a
- 40:40sponsorship, they don't have any idea who I am.
- 40:44I just send them a link to that movie.
- 40:45And it's a little risky, 'cause it tells a lot.
- 40:48Like, it tells some of my gnarlier moments.
- 40:50But I'm like, oh, well, they're going to get to see who I am and
- 40:53they're going to either like me or not.
- 40:55And and they're they're going to know exactly who I am.
- 40:58And most 99% of the time they come back like, wow, man, that
- 41:01is a crazy story. And so and it really helps.
- 41:05It just really helps people get to to either jump on board or
- 41:08not really. I've had not had nowhere near
- 41:13the success you have, but I can relate with you so much because
- 41:17you know, I give motivational speeches and I'm like nobody can
- 41:23introduce me. There's no way.
- 41:25So I had NASCAR productions make like a rather than a 3 minute
- 41:31video of me to introduce me and then I look in the crowd and
- 41:36yeah I relate with you because you're giving here watch this.
- 41:41This is this is my introduction in in in film and showing what
- 41:47you I mean that is so badass. And I, and I want to say this,
- 41:51obviously these are comments. I feel like anybody that knows
- 41:56your story is going to make them a better person.
- 42:01Yeah, it's yeah. Thank you.
- 42:02I feel like, you know, and I've had, I've had to get up in front
- 42:06of crowds and get and tell stories and give speeches and
- 42:09you know I've had people ask me to go be a mentor and I'm like
- 42:13hot man, that's crazy. Like I don't.
- 42:15I mean, I don't ever really think of that you've.
- 42:16Seen the movie, you've starred in the movie, you know, you came
- 42:20out, you know. And it's, you know, if you live
- 42:24by example, then people believe and and it's, you know, I have
- 42:31had multiple times opportunities to to like like start this
- 42:36mentorship group or be a men's group or.
- 42:39And I did a podcast for a while, just 'cause I felt like I wanted
- 42:42a dog's going crazy. I did a.
- 42:45That dog's indicative of who you and I are.
- 42:49Look at me. Look.
- 42:51At me for sure. So but yeah, my point is I went
- 42:57down that that podcast path because I just wanted it to
- 43:01learn more. I wanted to talk to people, just
- 43:03personalities and learn more about people.
- 43:05And and I've thought about that, you know, I feel like I could
- 43:08mentor parents on how to raise racing kids because I can tell
- 43:13you I can. I can pretty much watch your kid
- 43:15in this sport and tell you if he's going to make it or not
- 43:17very quick. You know, I'm sure that's how
- 43:20you are in car racing. You know you get to see someone
- 43:22you're like Oh yeah, I think they can do it if they have the
- 43:25the drive. And so you know I've had a lot
- 43:29of people call me for for advice on that and I'm like I don't
- 43:33know, man. Right now I'm focused on my kids
- 43:36and and I still have my thing going with racing off road.
- 43:39I still race can AMS and I do King of the Hammers which is
- 43:42this gnarly off road race in California.
- 43:44Once a year thousands of people show up.
- 43:46It's just a very difficult race that's like a 12 hour race
- 43:50through the through the rocks in the in the desert and so I I do
- 43:54that I do do promotions with can am commercials and and it keeps
- 43:58me, it's fun for me to go race around in a can am it gives you.
- 44:02That it's on my list. It's just yeah, I haven't got
- 44:08there yet your your story. And I thought to myself, I you
- 44:12know, you know, you know when when you when we when we do
- 44:17content we know 8 minutes is the mark.
- 44:20But when I do Kenny conversations you know, I
- 44:23understand the view time and all that.
- 44:25But your story is so unbelievable.
- 44:29You know, I mean I don't even know if we can get to Global
- 44:31Rallycross is what you know you're doing now and you've won
- 44:34gold and hey I want to say this. I have a friend.
- 44:40His mother abandoned him and he's never been right ever since
- 44:45that that. You know, when you started
- 44:48telling me that your mother abandoned you.
- 44:52This kid is. I love him very much and we've
- 44:56gone through a lot of conversations.
- 44:57But Brian, because I know a little bit about mothers
- 45:01abandoning their children, you came out a winter.
- 45:05How long? How many years do you think it
- 45:09took you? Have you ever forgiven your
- 45:12mother? Yeah, see, You need to watch the
- 45:15documentary. OK, OK, forget it.
- 45:18Forget it. I'll watch the documentary.
- 45:19Yes, I would say. That's watch the documentary.
- 45:22But yes, there's definitely been closure there for sure.
- 45:25Like, there's. Yeah, there had to be.
- 45:28It had to happen. Yeah, 100%.
- 45:30Do I talk to her every day and still, like, hang out with her?
- 45:35No. You know, I don't.
- 45:37She lives in Texas and she came from a very poor family and in
- 45:42the border down there's new Brunsville, Texas.
- 45:46It's hard to pronounce, but yeah, she lives down there and I
- 45:49remember going there as a little kid and they were that they're
- 45:53100%, you know, Mexican. They all lived in the same like
- 45:56same house there. They you know, like I said it
- 46:00was a very poverty stricken area and but I always had fun down
- 46:04there. I go down there and like there's
- 46:06could have cooked super good food and in a different culture.
- 46:10They rolled them tortillas on Yes, Yeah.
- 46:12And. That's what I miss about my mom,
- 46:14because she always cooked the best food, like the best
- 46:17homemade Mexican food. And and so those are the things
- 46:21I think when I think of positive things.
- 46:23Yeah, there. I mean I really do miss that the
- 46:26family and miss the that culture when it all just one day ended
- 46:30and and but at that point I was 10 years old and I just started
- 46:35racing dirt bikes so and my dad was the one who had the job So I
- 46:41knew if I left with mom to Texas which was an option right.
- 46:45Like she was like well if you want to come with me, I can.
- 46:48And I was like I don't know. I just I used to visit down
- 46:51there and it was fun but I knew that there's a different life
- 46:54and and I would not be able to race anymore and racing would be
- 46:59done and and that's it was another decision of a fork in
- 47:02the road that I had to make that decision to stay with my dad
- 47:07which he was more of a business guy but and I knew I was going
- 47:10to lose that loving connection but I wanted go down this path
- 47:15to racing and it's kind of a weird thing how how it pulled me
- 47:19this way and it was the path that's taken me to where I am
- 47:22today, you know. I just made a note.
- 47:25I I wrote the 45 minute mark. This is I'm going to have my
- 47:28friend when we when we get this up I'm going to tell him to go
- 47:32to the 45 minute mark. So thank you very much.
- 47:36That was uncomfortable for me but I I had to ask it because I
- 47:41have friends. One thing, if you don't want to
- 47:45answer it, don't answer it, But the similarities, one rotation
- 47:52difference. Jo Archer, the Australian that
- 47:56did the you did the double twist backflip.
- 48:00He does, he done the triple, he pulled it off and then he's
- 48:03practicing it and he died. When this happened, what went
- 48:09through your mind when you heard of him passing away 2 weeks ago?
- 48:15Yeah, that's the. It's the unfortunate realities
- 48:22of the sport and that's the hardest part, you know, like I
- 48:27said, I when I see people crash on dirt bikes, it's like that's
- 48:31the part of the sport I hate. I just thought it is like, I
- 48:33hate that part of the sport and I've watched, you know, my best
- 48:38friend die on, you know, crashing Jeremy Lusk and.
- 48:41I'm sorry. Yeah, And and it's, you know, in
- 48:44motor sports, it happens. You see it, it's dangerous, you
- 48:48know, So, you know, I've had multiple friends die on dirt
- 48:52bikes. So over the course of this many
- 48:55years and with Jo, that crash, I mean, those guys are doing
- 49:00triple flips. They're hitting ramps that are
- 49:02like massive ramps now, hitting them at 4th gear as fast as a
- 49:06450 can go. Oh my God, they're going like
- 49:105060 feet in the air. I mean it's so crazy.
- 49:15My opinion stunts like that should be done once a time
- 49:19that's like a that's like Evel Knievel the the you know
- 49:22Caesar's jump you do that one big bam, do it one time.
- 49:27But when they start trying to do things like that in shows every
- 49:31night or I mean I I just think certain tricks are so gnarly
- 49:36like and people are gnarly like is every time.
- 49:38I think like oh that's too crazy.
- 49:41But to them it's not to them. Like when I did a backflip on a
- 49:44dirt bike, people thought that was crazy, you know, and now
- 49:47it's triples. And so I just feel like the
- 49:51sport's elevated so high that the tricks are just so so death
- 49:56defying that. I just, I don't know.
- 49:59It's tough for me to comprehend now the the level of of bravery
- 50:03and and mindset to do that. But yeah, I mean like I said,
- 50:08it's the sports or it just, it just makes you realize how how
- 50:12dangerous the sports are and the risk these guys take.
- 50:14So it's it's like when you think about guys going like my
- 50:18daughter going 180 or 200 at A at a Speedway, you know, like,
- 50:24oh, like it's nothing. You know, like 0200 mph just,
- 50:28you know, and then get spun out at 200 or whatever and hits the
- 50:32wall like it's dangerous. Like it's scary.
- 50:35That's gnarly. Like so yeah, I just, I think
- 50:40we're surrounded by all that stuff.
- 50:42So you, I guess you become a little like you see it a
- 50:46different way. But yeah, it's I I hate seeing
- 50:49it, dude. I hate seeing dudes get like
- 50:52hurt or even worse. You know what happened?
- 50:55Like it's just sucks. Like it's a bummer.
- 50:57But like I, like I said, pay my respects and give him like I've
- 51:02always given him a lot of credit for the levels that they've
- 51:06taken it. But yeah, it's definitely a
- 51:08scary deal. Let's let's lighten the load a
- 51:11little bit. It's been, it's been awfully
- 51:13heavy, but it's been award-winning in my mind
- 51:17conversation. I've learned so much from you.
- 51:21First of all, let's start like this.
- 51:22We're going to go to Global Rallycross, but I want to
- 51:25congratulate you on Haley's great run at AT Vegas.
- 51:30I've raced 905 NASCAR races. It is extremely hard to run,
- 51:36really good. The the cars have got to be
- 51:39balanced. They got to be able to, you
- 51:41know, run, you know, so good, so balanced.
- 51:45She's a hell of a race car driver.
- 51:47I've always admired her because I have a niece.
- 51:51My brother Mike, his daughter, was incredibly good.
- 51:57And then I want to congratulate you, your boy.
- 51:59I I just love the nickname Danger Boy.
- 52:02You you've had, you've had it. Is this a good saying?
- 52:07It's been a good week for you, don't you think?
- 52:09Or not. Yeah, I mean Hayden, last week,
- 52:13Hayden freaking won his first Supercross, which is pretty bad
- 52:16ass. I'm sure that.
- 52:18Is that on your list? Yeah, yeah.
- 52:20And he and he. Yeah.
- 52:21Well, I, you know, first of all, and I mean this from the bottom
- 52:24of my heart, yeah, any conversations all about the
- 52:27great Brian Deegan. But you had kids, you know, so
- 52:33and and you know we got rallycross and and I know I got
- 52:37to wrap it up pretty much 'cause we're at an an hour.
- 52:40But you've done an incredible job raising your children.
- 52:46Did did you ever see, let's start with Haley, the oldest one
- 52:50right now. Did you Did you ever see your
- 52:53daughter? I mean, she's a beautiful girl,
- 52:57but she's got some tomboy in her.
- 52:58She's a bad ass. I've raced her.
- 53:01I've raced her up at Stafford in the SRX race and I raced her
- 53:06fare. But did when did you?
- 53:09When did you realize my daughter is going, is going to be a good
- 53:14race car driver? When did you see it?
- 53:16So that's a good question because when she was younger I
- 53:19was I just started I I laughed dirt bike competition after so
- 53:24many injuries near death experiences and I had all these
- 53:27great partnerships. I'm like well I can't just let
- 53:29these fade away. These are like multi $1,000,000
- 53:33endorsement deals and so I'm like what can I do and and at
- 53:38that point I was actually with Rockstar Energy at that point.
- 53:42Long story but Long story short when the militia blew up we went
- 53:45to Monster to try to sponsor Twitch and Feist and all the
- 53:48militia riders all the freestyle guys and they're like we just
- 53:51don't have the budget they were just monster just started and
- 53:54and I'm like well I want to do the Monster Militia and we were
- 53:57going to do a drink and and just it was all getting done and and
- 54:01and I had a business partner that we just didn't see eye to
- 54:04eye and he and for many reasons which taught me a lot about
- 54:08business and and but you know so I see a positive out of that but
- 54:12it also the the riders I was like well I want to sponsor the
- 54:16whole team the whole militia and that's when No Fear energy came
- 54:19out and No Fear was blowing up. Remember they were in NASCAR and
- 54:23so that was that was that moment So they're like we'll pay you
- 54:26hundreds of thousands of dollars the whole team all the guys and
- 54:29I was like oh all right probably the worst decision I ever made
- 54:36in business. I walked away from the monster
- 54:39as the first athlete. Probably the worst decision I've
- 54:42ever made in business. You know from, from stock
- 54:45options, from all the stuff that could have been and could have
- 54:47been and I wasn't ready for millions of dollars at that age.
- 54:50It could have been the death of me to be honest it was probably
- 54:52for a reason. Good point.
- 54:54And so I end up going to No Fear that ran its course.
- 54:57Those guys spent all their money, couldn't pay their bills
- 55:00like everyone knows and then I and I end up going to Rockstar
- 55:04was always real interested in in us so they jumped on board tons
- 55:08of money like Mons. It was the Rockstar militia
- 55:11deal. We we helped them so much build
- 55:13that brand in California and so we we blew up that whole scene
- 55:19and then they they said hey we want to take you to the truck
- 55:22races. So they and I'm like I've never
- 55:23even heard of it they took me to the off road truck races which
- 55:26was short course and I went out to Chula Vista San Diego and
- 55:30watch them like this is crazy these dudes are hitting riding
- 55:33racing motocross tracks and 1000 horsepower trucks and and I'm
- 55:37like they're like you want to try it.
- 55:38I'm like, yeah, I've never raced 4 wheels before, but why not?
- 55:42So I jumped in that and in first race I got smoked like I was
- 55:47like a menace back of the Packer and you and you know like how an
- 55:52offer are in dirt racing. Everyone runs up on the cushion
- 55:56I I was like, why are these these leaving the bottom so
- 55:58open? Because you can't exit and I
- 56:04figured right back by. And I was a Moto guy, so
- 56:07everything was dive bomb the bottom.
- 56:09So I dive bomb these guys and hit them coming off exit and
- 56:13they would get so mad. And I was like, dude, this is
- 56:16racing. Like I'm, I'm just taking the
- 56:18inside and like they wanted to like kill me, you know.
- 56:22And I. And so eventually I learned how
- 56:24to race, studied it, focus, put when I do something, like, I
- 56:29really study it. I really Who's the best?
- 56:32Why are they the best? I'm studying your video.
- 56:34I'm going to figure out why you're the best what what tires
- 56:36you're running. What equipment you have what
- 56:38suspension, who's your tuner Like I've learned to study
- 56:42study, study. And I within the first full
- 56:45season that I raced, I will end up winning the championship by
- 56:49the end of the year. And when I did, because I
- 56:51invested a lot of my own money because I had to make that
- 56:54transition, because I didn't want to go back to to freestyle
- 56:56motocross because of the danger. That's when the double backflip
- 56:59came out. You know, I did the 1st 360 on a
- 57:02dirt bike was very scary. Big moment at X Games with
- 57:05Pastrana. And anyway, the double backflip
- 57:08came out and I was like, I'm, I'm out, dude, I was like 30,
- 57:10some years old. I didn't want.
- 57:11To take a limit. I had a limit so anyway I got
- 57:14into cars roll cage and I knew this was my chance to reinvent
- 57:18myself and so I did. I went all in and start you know
- 57:21got got good at racing and off road and you know started making
- 57:24money doing that and and it carried me for another 10 years
- 57:27and I got in rally car came to X Games which is like a gift.
- 57:31I went out there and studied rally car, studied it was
- 57:33all-wheel drive you know 4 cylinder engines and and hand
- 57:37brakes and figured it out in a winning one.
- 57:40Gold. Yeah, which is hard like you
- 57:42don't get like I raced against some of the best rally guys in
- 57:45the world there and these these probably I mean a very tough
- 57:50accomplishments in in these short amount of time.
- 57:52But either way and I actually went in O8O9 race super late
- 57:56models. I've had Irwindale for like 2
- 57:58years because that was the talk when NASCAR was trying to get
- 58:02more name guys into NASCAR. So they were talking to me about
- 58:06like, hey come race with us if you're going to race.
- 58:09You know we had, we had a movement, we had a name and some
- 58:12marketing. So and I just remember and
- 58:14Rockstar was paint was going to pay for me to go race.
- 58:18They actually thought I was going to go race Xfinity.
- 58:22Hey. Yeah.
- 58:24And at the time, I thought you had already done everything.
- 58:27You were successful in everything.
- 58:29Yeah. So they're thinking, well, how
- 58:30are you just going to go on? Yeah, that's what I thought, you
- 58:34know. Yeah, How did I learn, by the
- 58:37way? I've never raced Urbandale, but
- 58:39it's got a sucker lane, too. That bottom, Yeah, that bottom
- 58:43is the hardest damn thing to exit.
- 58:45And everybody just peels around the middle.
- 58:47Yeah, and I learned what a good car and a bad car is there.
- 58:50Yeah, so, but, but anyhow, so I did that for a couple years.
- 58:54I actually was trying to race NASCAR for a little bit, like
- 58:56when Pastrana was first coming in and they were trying to get
- 58:59some name guys. But that ended pretty quick once
- 59:02Rockstar, right when it came to actually spending seven figure
- 59:06checks and and they saw that I probably wasn't going to be the
- 59:09next NASCAR champ, they they are like they end up spending on
- 59:13that one kid from Arizona back in the day, the young kid in
- 59:16Xfinity. That wasn't crafted, no.
- 59:19No, it was a young 1718 year old kid.
- 59:22I think he was from Arizona, but I forget his name.
- 59:26But he they end up giving him the money which they should
- 59:28have. He actually was fast.
- 59:30But so anyhow, my point is my bad, short lived career.
- 59:34And then with Haley we knew she needed to be.
- 59:38I guess your question was with Haley.
- 59:39Racing, yeah, but you got her in cage.
- 59:42Yes, yeah, she started on dirt bikes to learn how to shift and
- 59:46do that. But I knew the future was in
- 59:47cars for her. And so we put her into the I
- 59:50started racing off road trucks pro day.
- 59:52They had a kids class in carts, little off road carts.
- 59:55She begged to do those cards. She was more arts and crafts
- 59:59like the girl. That was kind of like that
- 1:00:01style. I'm like, I don't know, you're
- 1:00:03not really race material like. You're a girl.
- 1:00:08She wasn't like the gritty, like Tomboy.
- 1:00:11She's more of like playing you know in a dress playing with her
- 1:00:15arts and crafts and toys and and my my wife and Reese's like now
- 1:00:19get her a car and I'm like she's like no you need to get her a
- 1:00:23car and she was the big component behind it and and I'm
- 1:00:26like and so then I got her the cheapest junkiest go Kart 5
- 1:00:32grand dude and she goes out she's in the back of the pack
- 1:00:35and cruising around and and then by the next season my wife so
- 1:00:39you can get get her a better car like so she can at least like
- 1:00:42race. And I was like all right so we
- 1:00:44invested in a nice winning car and she went out and started
- 1:00:48getting on the podium like started beating the boys and I
- 1:00:50was like all right yeah I was like so then my interest right.
- 1:00:54I'm like OK I think she wants to race and so then I got behind
- 1:00:58that and and started getting the good parts.
- 1:01:01We hired our own engine tuner just for her and and and she
- 1:01:05started winning all these races and championships and it was
- 1:01:08fast Drivers like Sheldon Creed Riley Herbst they all came
- 1:01:11through these karting programs that were an off road And so I'm
- 1:01:15just my point is it's no slouches like like to win these
- 1:01:18you got to be pretty good and and so she I just knew she
- 1:01:22needed to go to NASCAR to make they have a successful career as
- 1:01:25a female. And so we did everything we
- 1:01:27could to get her to the East Coast and get her in front of
- 1:01:30the right people. Then Toyota heard about her
- 1:01:32tested her put her in the in that diversity program which
- 1:01:36started the wheels turning. And that's when I learned my
- 1:01:38first thing about NASCAR. They're like hey come we got
- 1:01:41this program like wow you guys are going to handle everything
- 1:01:44and and get her in the car and and we get there and they're
- 1:01:47like well it's not really like that you're going to be paying a
- 1:01:50lot of and that the hook was already in right.
- 1:01:54Like we're already the hook was in so we we ran with it and she
- 1:01:58proved that she could race you know she could be competitive
- 1:02:02and and I feel like I feel like I have a I've always had a lot
- 1:02:05of questions of like why is there been not a female yet to
- 1:02:09go into NASCAR and be I wouldn't much say a champion but a fierce
- 1:02:15competitor that runs with the lead pack so why do you think
- 1:02:19that hasn't happened yet. I would say that the men give up
- 1:02:23on the girls too quick. Yeah, I think somebody badass
- 1:02:27like you, you know, they. I've been in NASCAR my whole
- 1:02:30life and race teams don't like the parents around.
- 1:02:34I can give you a lot of examples.
- 1:02:36You know, my my brother Rusty drove for Rodger Penske.
- 1:02:42You know, it's like, give me your child, stay away.
- 1:02:45Yeah, And and it's just that it's just that kind of deal.
- 1:02:50But my, my, my opinion. Well, I mean, it's it's like
- 1:02:54when I watched Danica Patrick and I watch Haley, they both.
- 1:02:59And listen, I'm a girl, Dad. I got three daughters.
- 1:03:02So I'm. I'm in.
- 1:03:03I'm in the girl. But I am telling you, I know
- 1:03:07what I'm talking about. The guys abused the girls on the
- 1:03:10racetrack. You see it all the time in all
- 1:03:13the videos. I mean, your daughter's been
- 1:03:16wrecked more than she's wrecked. I'm telling they hit her in the
- 1:03:21left rear. But when you know, you look at
- 1:03:26the the races that she's won like on dirt.
- 1:03:30She gets her right front underneath her, left her, she
- 1:03:32moves them out of the way, they wreck her and and there there's
- 1:03:37a there's an art to moving people and then there's an art
- 1:03:40like you're in them because something happened.
- 1:03:42You just, you have to go ahead and spit them out where else
- 1:03:45you're going to get stopped. So the reason that it takes the
- 1:03:51girls longer is the guys. There's a crapload of male
- 1:03:57chauvinist still and they just can't believe that a girl's out
- 1:04:01running me. Oh, my God.
- 1:04:02You know, And I just never bought into that just because
- 1:04:06I'm a girl Dad and and my niece. Really good Chrissy Wallace.
- 1:04:11But listen, you know, you asked me that question.
- 1:04:17I just want to remind everybody. So let's go to Danger Boy.
- 1:04:25I feel like he's a carbon copy of you.
- 1:04:28Hey. Now, when I interviewed Haley
- 1:04:30last year, she said something that shocked me.
- 1:04:34She says my brother is just raw talent.
- 1:04:38He's just he's just a God gift. She didn't say that but she made
- 1:04:43a point to me that Danger Boy Deegan is just good.
- 1:04:48That's all there is to it. So he he's gnarly like you he
- 1:04:54Jamie Little she imitated you said she said when Brian Deegan
- 1:04:58you when you first come along you're you had this shitty and
- 1:05:02grin you're like like this with the face and and and I kind of
- 1:05:06see that with Danger Boy. Yeah.
- 1:05:10Now are you are you letting him be his himself?
- 1:05:15Or do you ever talk to him about the the way he is 'cause?
- 1:05:20He is. I'm his parent.
- 1:05:22Come on, man. What do you guys talk about
- 1:05:26'cause this is the hottest topic in motocross right now?
- 1:05:30Yeah, yeah, for sure. I feel like he's a young kid.
- 1:05:33He's always been pretty like he's always been kind of like
- 1:05:37like more edgy and rough, you know, And like he's he's always
- 1:05:41like he'll he looks at something, it's a challenge and
- 1:05:44he wants to conquer it. Like that's the way he's always
- 1:05:46been. He'll sit there and just if he
- 1:05:48has a scooter and he wants to learn a trick, he'll stay there
- 1:05:50all day until he can figure it out.
- 1:05:52And so it's the way he is with racing too.
- 1:05:54He's just like he's to figure out how can I win and he just
- 1:05:57hates losing more than he likes winning.
- 1:05:59I feel that's like his thing. He just like, I don't want to
- 1:06:02lose. Like I just and so he has a grit
- 1:06:05in in fire in him, which is very, very difficult to do
- 1:06:10coming from a family. Let's be honest, that had all
- 1:06:13options, right? Like I I came up, I didn't have
- 1:06:16much of anything, so I didn't have any way to turn back.
- 1:06:19I couldn't turn back And so with him he had a lot of options,
- 1:06:22right? He could go race cars.
- 1:06:24We wanted him to race cars like, well, there's a lot of other
- 1:06:26things we want him to do. But he got focused on dirt
- 1:06:29bikes. He's like, this is what I'm
- 1:06:30doing and I'm going to win. And I was like, all right, well,
- 1:06:33it's going to be tough. It's a very tough sport.
- 1:06:35You got to train every day. You got to eat right, sleep
- 1:06:37good, surround yourself with the right people.
- 1:06:40It's a everyday, all day thing if you want to be the best.
- 1:06:44And he was like, all right, so all right, let's do it.
- 1:06:46I know I've been there. I've been around the sport long
- 1:06:49enough. I can help guide you through
- 1:06:51this as long as you stay focused you know if you are in I'm in
- 1:06:56and we will go do it and and and so that's kind of the vibe and
- 1:07:00he he's you know there's definitely things as a young
- 1:07:03young 18 year old kid he's he wants to say or do and I you
- 1:07:06know he has to reel them in and be like you know that's that's
- 1:07:09going to come. Social media is different
- 1:07:11nowadays. Well, come everything, come back
- 1:07:12and bite you, you know, So you got to be careful what you say
- 1:07:15and do where. Back in the day, they'd be lucky
- 1:07:18to hear what we said because someone wasn't filming it or
- 1:07:21whatever he said, she said. But now everything's caught on
- 1:07:26tape, so you got to be careful with the way you act and the way
- 1:07:28you portray yourself. But I feel like what you see is
- 1:07:31him, you know, I try to let him just be him.
- 1:07:34He he's, he's that kind of like edgy little, you know, attitude.
- 1:07:38You got to be to be the best man, you got to have some
- 1:07:40attitude, dude. That's the way I see.
- 1:07:42It, I love it, Yeah, I love. It yeah.
- 1:07:45Let me finish on that. So I feel like like going back
- 1:07:50to to Haley I feel like she it's a fine balance being a girl in
- 1:07:57NASCAR. I I stepping back as a dad
- 1:08:00watching, I feel like I wish NASCAR would have stepped in
- 1:08:04many more times and threw the Black Flag and said hey you guys
- 1:08:08aren't crashing these hundred some $1000 trucks every weekend.
- 1:08:12So OK you know if we care about the money let's not crash these
- 1:08:15guys. And when if you do spend, spend
- 1:08:18someone out on purpose, you're done.
- 1:08:19Go to the back and start like when I race rally and offer
- 1:08:23trucks, if you crash someone you're going to the back.
- 1:08:25Are you doing a stop and go like like they don't just get to
- 1:08:28crash people like they don't like that blew my mind that that
- 1:08:32was so allowed to happen and and I and I respect NASCAR so I
- 1:08:36don't like jump in with my social media power and start
- 1:08:39like talking crap because I don't think it helps.
- 1:08:42But at the end of the day as a father watching a female I'm
- 1:08:46like man she just a lot of people take shots at her and and
- 1:08:50and she's I feel like they could have done a better job at at at
- 1:08:55reeling that in and and so and I get it she's got to earn her
- 1:08:59stripes you know she's got to earn her spot earn her respect
- 1:09:02with the racers And and I feel like I would if I was in her
- 1:09:05shoes I'd probably be a lot I'd be swinging a lot more.
- 1:09:09I'd be like you're a lot more like you Take Me Out I'm
- 1:09:12stalking you dude. Like I'm going to stand like get
- 1:09:16aggro right. Like but obviously that's been a
- 1:09:18bad part too. But my yeah that's why I don't
- 1:09:23like do that that's why I can't be in the middle of it because I
- 1:09:26get too fired up. I look look at these guys that
- 1:09:29clean her out they won't even look at her.
- 1:09:31It's like come on bro. Like when I race if I take you
- 1:09:33out you either knew I didn't like you and you had it coming
- 1:09:36or I walk up to you and say hey sorry I messed up.
- 1:09:40That was my mistake. Like I shouldn't have took you
- 1:09:42out. That was an accident And there's
- 1:09:44two ways to go about it And if you go about the way of just
- 1:09:47don't look at the driver and walk by like nothing happened or
- 1:09:50you got 100 some $1000 truck destroyed and your weekend's
- 1:09:53wasted. Come on like give me a break
- 1:09:55dude. And we're OK with that.
- 1:09:57Like that's not racing you know that's not cool.
- 1:10:00That's not the old school way like.
- 1:10:01So that's just what I see out of it and you know I think Haley
- 1:10:06has it in her to be a really top racer you know.
- 1:10:09But it's like Hayden you got to go all in every awakening moment
- 1:10:13every day. You know it's a it's a it's a
- 1:10:15all in especially a female to beat the man like you got to be
- 1:10:18like gritty and everything you got you know and I think it's
- 1:10:22possible and she's still young so young in that sport.
- 1:10:26So you know, like I said, I I always feel like as a female you
- 1:10:29need to touch just a solid group around you and it just, I just
- 1:10:34picture this, you see this tough group of of of you guys and
- 1:10:38girls, whatever, just around you like the solid group that people
- 1:10:41just don't F with and it's we. Need the metal militia around
- 1:10:44their daughter? Let's let's bring the crew back.
- 1:10:47Right. Yeah, yeah, we'd probably get
- 1:10:49kicked out by the. 1st and as soon as soon as the next guy
- 1:10:52hits her left her, turns out you go beat his ass.
- 1:10:55Yeah, yeah, and then you won't do that no more.
- 1:10:58You know they listened back in the day, in my day, what we did
- 1:11:02is we, you know, you have the tractor trailers park, right.
- 1:11:06Here's a tractor trailer, there's a tractor.
- 1:11:08We went, we say come here and we went between the tractor
- 1:11:12trailers and when we came out, OK, you just wrecked me.
- 1:11:17I'm going to wreck you. And we're going to keep doing
- 1:11:19this until you realize don't mess with me, Yeah.
- 1:11:24Yeah, yeah, yeah. And that's kind of the unspoken
- 1:11:26rule of racing. You know.
- 1:11:28And I, like I said, I feel like in the last few years it got so
- 1:11:32out of control with guys just crashing guys.
- 1:11:36And you know, I just, for me, I don't think that's great racing.
- 1:11:39You know, I feel like that should be handled on the track
- 1:11:42by the drivers, off the track by the drivers.
- 1:11:45And it should be OK to do that. Like, OK, hey, these two are
- 1:11:48going to have words. If it comes to a little scrap,
- 1:11:51Oh well, let's just move on and hopefully it's settled.
- 1:11:54It's done, you know, And I feel like the old ways and many
- 1:11:58things were a little better you. Know what they were?
- 1:12:00Because we we did take care of our own.
- 1:12:05We took care of ourselves. We didn't wait for people to
- 1:12:07police it. I can tell you so many run
- 1:12:10insurance that we solved on on our own.
- 1:12:12But, but yeah, I well, listen, you know we can go for two
- 1:12:18hours. My brother Ross, he's calling me
- 1:12:21right now. We're getting ready to go on a
- 1:12:23ride. I'm down here at bike Week and
- 1:12:26listen there, there's a Part 2 coming and and and we got to go
- 1:12:32on to rallycross. You know here I'm trying to
- 1:12:34cover your whole life in an hour and 15 minutes and it ain't
- 1:12:38going to work but you. But but you've given me so much,
- 1:12:41Brian. I've always been a big fan of
- 1:12:44you. One one thing I admired about
- 1:12:46you is you stay busy. You stay digging.
- 1:12:49And I want to thank you so much. Like I said, there's more but we
- 1:12:54just we got to sign off and and I really appreciate you.
- 1:12:58You're a badass dad. I admire you for overcoming and
- 1:13:03prevailing. You know that that it's funny
- 1:13:06because I'm on the West Coast. I learned what's this word
- 1:13:09gnarly mean and I learned it and you're you were gnarly and you
- 1:13:15got a great family. Congratulations on everything
- 1:13:19and you're still right in the middle of it.
- 1:13:22But thank you being on. Thank you for being on Kenny
- 1:13:24conversation. Yeah.
- 1:13:25Thanks for doing what you do, man.
- 1:13:27Appreciate. I know it takes time and energy
- 1:13:29takes a, you know, it's the connections of getting everyone
- 1:13:32lined up to be on the show. So, yeah, thanks for doing that.
- 1:13:35It's good to have this positive voice.
- 1:13:36You always speak positive about Haley, which is good and and
- 1:13:41yeah, I'm just a proud dad of all the kids, all my kids, and
- 1:13:44worked hard and I appreciate the time, man.
- 1:13:47Well, I want you to know a little something about me.
- 1:13:49I'm a racer. I still race.
- 1:13:51And the man behind the camera right now, Charlie Marlow, I
- 1:13:55moved back to Saint Louis and he said let me start you a YouTube
- 1:13:58show. I said no man, I'm too busy
- 1:14:00running my dirt car. I run 80 races a year.
- 1:14:02Please. Yeah.
- 1:14:04And Charlie's listening to this right now.
- 1:14:06I haven't told many people this. So about a month later, he calls
- 1:14:09me again. I said, all right, all right,
- 1:14:10I'll, I'll do it. And I'm nothing like you.
- 1:14:15You got millions and millions, but it's it's been a lot of fun.
- 1:14:19And I said, can I ever interview people?
- 1:14:22He goes, oh, yeah, I just thought you wanted to talk.
- 1:14:24I'm like, hell, no. So, so you're about a 45th.
- 1:14:30Great athlete. And yeah, I just enjoy it.
- 1:14:35And I sometimes I get tired of studying up about about it
- 1:14:40because I want to ride the motorcycle right now.
- 1:14:42There you go. Yeah, go have fun, man.
- 1:14:44Yeah. So listen, everybody, you've
- 1:14:46always asked about it. We are in podcast form.
- 1:14:49We are on iTunes and Spotify, and you can listen to the great
- 1:14:53Brian Deegan on your way to work.
- 1:14:56And it's long. So when you turn around and go
- 1:14:58back home, listen to him again. Once again, thank you, Brian.
- 1:15:02Yeah. Thanks for having me on.
- 1:15:03All right. Goodbye, everybody.
- 1:15:05Yeah.
