- 0:09Good morning, family. Open up to Matthew 21,
- 0:14Revelation 19. You're going to see some things
- 0:17that you probably never saw or heard today. It's
- 0:21not like it's never been taught. But that being
- 0:24said, before we dig in, we're going to do the...
- 0:28The doctrinal focus today. So doctrinal focus,
- 0:32I will read the question, you will read the answer.
- 0:34Westminster Shorter Catechism, question number
- 0:3628. Wherein consists Christ's exaltation? Christ's
- 0:43exaltation consists in his rising from the dead
- 0:47on the third day and his ascending into heaven.
- 0:52and in sitting at the right hand of God the Father,
- 0:55and in coming to judge the world at the last
- 0:58day. So this doctrine is fitting for today, because
- 1:04I think a lot of times when we go through Scripture,
- 1:07we have a tendency to look at things in a way
- 1:10that, I don't know if it's the idea of simplification,
- 1:13but there is some very important truths in these
- 1:18two verses. And I think sometimes it's missed
- 1:23that there is more than one triumphal entry.
- 1:28You're like, no way, that's impossible. We're
- 1:31going to prove it biblically. And I think you'll
- 1:34be able to look at the days coming to Jesus'
- 1:39crucifixion and be able to see this in the scripture.
- 1:43And really, the two things we're going to focus
- 1:45on today is the donkey and the horse, the donkey
- 1:48and her colt. and the horse. So before we get
- 1:52started, we're going to pray, and then we're
- 1:54going to dig in. I hope you guys got notebooks,
- 1:56and I hope you enjoyed today's message. Father,
- 2:00I want to thank you so much for your faithfulness
- 2:01and goodness. Thank you that you are righteous
- 2:04good, that all things are done for your purpose
- 2:07and glory, that everything throughout the scripture
- 2:09speaks of you in ways that our minds can't even
- 2:13fathom, that we will know fully even as we are
- 2:17fully known one day when we see you face to face.
- 2:22Lord, we praise you and thank you that you are
- 2:24holy, righteous, and good, and that your people
- 2:27are yours. May we see the majesty of the humble
- 2:32king and the glory of the just king, the coming
- 2:36king. Lord, we praise you and thank you for your
- 2:38faithfulness. In Jesus' name, amen. Matthew 21.
- 2:42It says, Now when they drew near to Jerusalem
- 2:45and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives,
- 2:49then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them,
- 2:52Go into the village in front of you, and immediately
- 2:55you will find a donkey tied and a colt with her.
- 3:01Untie them, bring them to me. If anyone says
- 3:04anything to you, you shall say, The Lord needs
- 3:08them. and he will send them at once. This took
- 3:13place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet,
- 3:16saying, Say to the daughter of Zion, Behold,
- 3:20your king is coming to you, humble and mounted
- 3:25on a donkey, a colt, the fowl of a beast of burden.
- 3:30The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed
- 3:33them. They brought the donkey and the colt and
- 3:37put on them their cloaks. and he sat on them.
- 3:41Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the
- 3:44road, and others cut branches from the trees
- 3:47and spread them on the road. And the crowds that
- 3:50went before him and that followed him were shouting,
- 3:53Hosanna to the son of David. Blessed be he who
- 3:58comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the
- 4:01highest. And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole
- 4:05city was stirred up, saying, who is this? And
- 4:09the crowd said, this is the prophet Jesus from
- 4:13Nazareth of Galilee. Some things I want you to
- 4:15take notice. Matthew Henry writes concerning
- 4:19this, the provision that was made for this dignified
- 4:24rite or royal ceremony was very poor and ordinary,
- 4:30and such as bespoke his kingdom to be not of
- 4:34this world. There were no heralds at arms provided,
- 4:38no trumpet sounded before him, no chariots of
- 4:42state, no royal guards in procession attire.
- 4:45Such things as these were not agreeable to his
- 4:49present state of humiliation, but will be far
- 4:54outdone at his second coming to which his magnificent
- 4:58appearance. is reserved. When the last trumpet
- 5:04shall sound, the glorious angels shall be his
- 5:09heralds and attendants, and the clouds his chariots.
- 5:13But in this public appearance, you can only imagine
- 5:16what that day will be. Can you think about that?
- 5:20That there was nothing concerning his coming
- 5:23in as king would even have spoken that the king
- 5:27had arrived. Why a donkey in a cult? Many of
- 5:31you guys have probably, I know we talked about
- 5:33this last year, that the reality of Christ riding
- 5:36on a donkey was part of the story. It's actually
- 5:40a donkey and a colt. He rode on both. Matthew
- 5:45is very clear here. And so is Zachariah. Why
- 5:49a donkey and her colt, her fowl, her male son?
- 5:56To fulfill what was written in Zachariah. Chapter
- 6:009, verse 9. Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion.
- 6:03Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem. Behold,
- 6:06your king is coming to you, righteous and having
- 6:10salvation, as he, humble and mounted on a donkey,
- 6:14on a colt, the fowl of a donkey, to show that
- 6:20he alone is king, who has come to judge sin,
- 6:24like the judges of Israel in Judges 5 .10. So
- 6:29I want you to understand this. Before there was
- 6:31a king, they would have judges. The judges were
- 6:34the ones that ruled the people of Israel for
- 6:37God. They were the ones who God has set in place
- 6:40because God was the king. Well, there came a
- 6:43time when they no longer wanted judges. They
- 6:44demanded a king, and Samuel was the last of the
- 6:47judges. And so we see in Judges chapter 5 verse
- 6:5110 what the judge would ride on. It says, Tell
- 6:55of it, you who ride on white donkeys, who sit
- 6:59on rich carpets, you who walk by the way, talking
- 7:04about the judge. The judge would ride a white
- 7:08donkey because horses were few and in between
- 7:11in those days. A donkey is how the leader would
- 7:17ride in. And in most cases, especially before
- 7:20the times of kings, when a judge would ride in
- 7:24too, a tribe, or into the nation, they knew that
- 7:29God was sending some really bad news. We also
- 7:33know that the sons of judges rode donkeys. And
- 7:39like the sons of the judges in Judges 12, 13
- 7:42through 14, after him, Abdon, the son of Hillel,
- 7:47the Perithnight, judged Israel. He had 40 sons
- 7:52and 30 grandsons who rode on 70 colts, and he
- 7:57judged Israel eight years. Can you see that?
- 8:01That the sons of the judge rode on a fowl, a
- 8:06colt. The king of Israel, the son of God, comes
- 8:10riding on a donkey, humble king. And on her colt,
- 8:14the beast of burden, not as conqueror, but as
- 8:19a humble king to judge sin and give his life
- 8:23as a ransom for many. Now do you see the importance
- 8:26of the donkey and her colt? It's not by an accident.
- 8:30It's not just the importance of fulfilling scripture,
- 8:33which God does always in his prophecies, but
- 8:37it's also to tell a story that the humble king
- 8:40who has come to judge sin will die. He will carry
- 8:45the burden of his people. The king and his donkey,
- 8:49the first coming, the humble king. Christ came
- 8:53his first time. Many would say that his first
- 8:56coming was at his birth, and that is true. But
- 8:59when he enters Jerusalem as king, his first coming,
- 9:02we know what happened then. Matthew 21, 4 -7
- 9:07says this, This took place to fulfill what was
- 9:11spoken by the prophet, saying, Say to the daughter
- 9:14of Zion, Behold, see! Look, your king is coming
- 9:19to you. I like what Zechariah, what it says in
- 9:24Zechariah is that he comes humble and bringing
- 9:27salvation. If they only remembered. Humble and
- 9:31mounted on a donkey, on a colt, a young donkey,
- 9:34the fowl. The fowl of a donkey is a male donkey,
- 9:39the son of the mother donkey, if you could say
- 9:44that. What was a fowl? The fowl was a beast of
- 9:48burden. The fowl was young enough and strong
- 9:50enough to carry all the junk that the old donkeys
- 9:54couldn't carry. The burden. The disciples went
- 9:57and did as Jesus had directed them. They brought
- 10:00the donkey and the colt and put on them their
- 10:03cloaks and he sat on them. The king, to carry
- 10:07the burden of his people, sits humbly on the
- 10:10donkeys. Why should you or how should you respond?
- 10:15to the humble king. I would say, don't respond
- 10:18like the people of Israel because they got it
- 10:20wrong. How should you respond? The people's response
- 10:24to the humble king, Matthew 21, 8 through 11
- 10:27says, most of the crowds spread their cloaks
- 10:30on the road and others cut branches from the
- 10:33trees and spread them on the road. This was his.
- 10:37red carpet moment. And then it says, and the
- 10:40crowd that went before him, that followed him,
- 10:43were shouting, Hosanna, Yashana in the Hebrew.
- 10:49Yashana, Hosanna means save us, we pray. Isn't
- 10:52that amazing that he did come to save them, but
- 10:56they never saw the king. To the son of David,
- 10:59blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord,
- 11:02Yashana in the highest. And when he entered Jerusalem,
- 11:08the whole city was stirred up saying, who is
- 11:10this? Who's this guy? It's the same response
- 11:15they gave when they were in the desert begging
- 11:19God for bread. They wake up in the morning and
- 11:22there's man all over the ground. And they go,
- 11:25what is that? Who's this guy? Interesting, isn't
- 11:29it? Notice what it says. And the crowd said,
- 11:33this is the prophet. Jesus from Nazareth of Galilee.
- 11:37After all, does anything good come from Nazareth?
- 11:42Of course not. They had just paid attention to
- 11:46Zechariah's prophecy that the king would ride
- 11:49on a donkey and he is coming to bring salvation.
- 11:53They would have said, praise be the king, but
- 11:55that's not the king they wanted. The king they
- 11:58wanted was a king who would destroy Rome. See,
- 12:00if Jesus came in, guns a blazing, taken thrones.
- 12:06Oh, he's our king now. But the reality is the
- 12:10victory he won was the victory over sin. They
- 12:14didn't want forgiveness of sin. They didn't want
- 12:17a king to destroy the great Goliath of every
- 12:21human life. So when you watch and you look at
- 12:24a movie of David and Goliath, no, it's not Goliath
- 12:29meaning your depression and all the things you
- 12:31go through. It is sin. Goliath was undefeated.
- 12:35No one could beat him except a king and a rock.
- 12:41No one can defeat sin except the king who is
- 12:47the rock. All Jerusalem missed the king. Oh,
- 12:50it's the prophet. You see, he came not as a conquering
- 12:54king, but as a king who gave his life for his
- 12:56people, not in war. but to set the captives free,
- 13:00not in wrath, but to bring peace, not with an
- 13:03army, but alone and abandoned by his friends.
- 13:07But that's not the end. Revelation 19 verse 11
- 13:13through 16 tells of another triumphal entry,
- 13:18a second coming that we must pay attention to.
- 13:23Except this time it's not a donkey, it's a horse.
- 13:27And look what it says. Then I saw heaven open
- 13:32and behold a white horse and one sitting on it
- 13:37is called faithful and true and in righteousness
- 13:40he judges and makes war. His eyes are like a
- 13:44flame of fire and on his head are many diadems.
- 13:49And he has a name written that no one knows but
- 13:53himself. He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood,
- 13:58and the name by which he is called is the Word
- 14:02of God. Logos Elohim. And the armies of heaven,
- 14:09arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following
- 14:13him on white horses. From his mouth comes a sharp
- 14:20sword with which to strike down the nations,
- 14:23and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He
- 14:26will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath
- 14:30of God, the Almighty. On his robe and on his
- 14:35thigh, he has a name written, King of Kings and
- 14:39Lord of Lords. Isn't that amazing? This second
- 14:44triumphal entry will be like none other. The
- 14:49second coming of Christ, the just king who has
- 14:52returned as promised. Then I saw heaven open,
- 14:56just like he rode in to Jerusalem and went to
- 15:01the temple. He, heaven will open and every eye
- 15:05will see him on that day. The first day, surprise,
- 15:09the king is here. Who's this guy? The second
- 15:13time, surprise, the king is here. Oh my gosh.
- 15:18Terrified. Because he's not coming on a donkey
- 15:21this time. He's coming on a horse to make war.
- 15:26That's our God. If you ever get a chance to listen
- 15:29to that message. It's a message called, That's
- 15:34My King. Look it up. It's on YouTube. You'll
- 15:37love it. But look, it says, the one sitting.
- 15:41on this horse. Behold, look, pay attention, see
- 15:45the white horse. The one sitting on it is called
- 15:48faithful and true. The word true here means that
- 15:52which by nature corresponds to and has the name,
- 15:56the genuine, the real, the true. In other words,
- 15:59his name, faithful and true, is who he is. And
- 16:04in righteousness, in justice, in virtue that
- 16:07gives each one their due. Understand this. Christ
- 16:10came to take away for his people what was due
- 16:15to them. Death. When he comes this time, he will
- 16:20give what's due to them. His wrath. They will
- 16:25get their due. He judges. This word judges means
- 16:30to summon to trial. That one's case is examined
- 16:34and judgment is passed. When he comes, you will
- 16:38be brought before the throne of the king and
- 16:41he will pass judgment upon you and it will be
- 16:44done. You don't have any hope once he returns.
- 16:50Now is your hope. Now, if you hear him call,
- 16:54repent. Now is the day of salvation. Not tomorrow.
- 16:59Not when I get my life right. Not when everything
- 17:02becomes okay for me. By then it might be too
- 17:05late. Now, don't harden your hearts. Isn't that
- 17:12interesting? He comes to judge. He comes to examine
- 17:16one's case and to pass condemnation. And he makes
- 17:21war. If you're a dude, that's right. It's done.
- 17:33Let's go. It's the idea. The just king reigns.
- 17:38The just king reigns. Revelation 19, 12 through
- 17:4116 says, his eyes are like flame of fire. There
- 17:46is nothing outside of his purview. He sees all
- 17:48things all the way down to the minute detail
- 17:52that you can imagine. He knows the thoughts and
- 17:54intents of your heart. He can know and see all
- 17:59things. He has a name written that no one knows
- 18:04but himself. Can you imagine how holy and magnificent
- 18:07that name is? There's no words in the English
- 18:11language or in any language on the face of the
- 18:14earth that can describe God sufficiently. But
- 18:19this name, he is clothed in a robe dipped in
- 18:22blood. Whose blood? His blood. His blood. He
- 18:26dipped his robe in blood for you. It's not him
- 18:29riding on a horse and the blood going up to the
- 18:32bridle. That's the blood. No. This blood. His
- 18:36blood. Why? Because the name by which he is called
- 18:40is the word of God. The gospel. The word of God.
- 18:46The living word. And the armies. You notice this.
- 18:50Chris Tomlin sings a God of many armies. This
- 18:54is not just an army. This is armies upon armies.
- 18:58And the armies of heaven arrayed in fine linen,
- 19:01white and pure, were following him on white horses.
- 19:05Who are those arrayed in fine linen, white and
- 19:10pure? All of his people. Those who have been
- 19:14martyred. Who have given their lives for Christ
- 19:17and his gospel. Those who belong to him. You
- 19:21are those who are arrayed in fine linen with
- 19:25white and pure. And look what it says. we are
- 19:29following him on white horses, just like the
- 19:32sons of Abdon. Why? Because the judge of all
- 19:36the universe has entered into man's presence
- 19:41again as judge and king, and his sons follow
- 19:46him. What a terrifying moment for the world to
- 19:50see. I don't know about you, I'm kind of glad
- 19:52to be part of that army. And on a white horse
- 19:54at that. You know why it's white horses? for
- 19:57you and me, because we're royalty. From his mouth
- 20:02comes a sharp sword with which he strikes down
- 20:05the nations. He destroys the nations by the very
- 20:09word of his mouth. What a day that will be. And
- 20:15he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will
- 20:18tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath
- 20:21of God the Almighty. If you have any questions
- 20:23about that, turn to chapter 14. Verse 17, it
- 20:29says, then another angel came out of the temple
- 20:32in heaven, and he too had a sharp sickle. And
- 20:35another angel came out from the altar, the angel
- 20:39who has authority over the fire. And he called
- 20:42out with a loud voice to the one who had the
- 20:44sharp sickle, put in your sickle and gather the
- 20:48clusters from the vine of the earth. for its
- 20:52grapes are ripe. So the angel swung the sickle
- 20:55across the earth and gathered the grape harvest
- 20:58of the earth and threw it into the great winepress
- 21:02of the wrath of God. I'm going to make this as
- 21:06gently as I possibly can, and I say it respectfully
- 21:10and lovingly. If you're stuck in dispensational
- 21:13theology, run. Get out of it. Because chapter
- 21:1814, is a clear reference to chapter 19 of him
- 21:25coming and he will tread the winepress of the
- 21:29fury of the wrath of God. It's pretty clear.
- 21:31This is a God who reigns and rules. This is the
- 21:34greatness of our God, the glory that he alone
- 21:37is judge and that no sin will go uncovered. Why?
- 21:42Because when he comes this time, when he comes
- 21:46again, he comes as a conquering king, a righteous
- 21:49judge, waging war, judging the nations, pouring
- 21:53out his wrath. He comes with armies, not alone,
- 21:58but with myriads upon myriads, all riding white
- 22:01horses. Why? Because he's the Lamb of God. He
- 22:04is the King of Kings, and he is the Lord of Lords.
- 22:07He reigns. So every Palm Sunday, You have from
- 22:12now on, I hope you see that the king who comes
- 22:15in humbly will return on a horse as just and
- 22:18righteous king. He reigns, make no mistake. So
- 22:24much so that he stated all authority. All authority
- 22:29has been given unto me. And he also says, today,
- 22:34the enemy will be cast down. Today, we have no
- 22:39enemy. That's greater than sin itself by which
- 22:44he has gained victory over life, over death,
- 22:48sin, and the grave. There is no greater enemies.
- 22:50And the greatest of those enemies is sin. It's
- 22:52not Satan. Satan is a created creature. How important
- 22:56is our king to you? So what do you do this week?
- 23:02What should you do every single day of the week?
- 23:05365 days a year, 24 hours a day. Preach Christ
- 23:10and him crucified. He's coming again. That's
- 23:13your responsibility as believers. Tell the world
- 23:16of the king and the work that the king has done.
- 23:20He reigns. He rules. You have no enemy greater
- 23:25than the issue of sin. He has defeated that enemy.
- 23:28Live victoriously. Our king has won. And we will
- 23:34be coming riding on white horses. as we follow
- 23:38him into the kingdom that he has prepared for
- 23:42us. Father, I want to thank you so much for your
- 23:45goodness and faithfulness. Thank you, Lord, for
- 23:47your word. Thank you that you are king. Thank
- 23:50you that you will bring us with you. Thank you
- 23:52that you have established your kingdom forever
- 23:54and ever, and that you have established your
- 23:56church. And that upon the gospel, the proclamation
- 23:59that you died on the cross, was buried and rose
- 24:01again on the third day to give us life. Upon
- 24:03that truth, Lord, you have built your church.
- 24:06She is strong. She is firm. She is immovable.
- 24:10And the gates of hell will not prevail over her.
- 24:12We praise you and thank you that you have brought
- 24:14us into your family. To you be honor and glory,
- 24:16power and might forever. In Jesus' name, amen.
