- 0:00unknown: Uh then.
- 0:15SPEAKER_01: Alright, everybody.
- 0:16SPEAKER_01: Welcome back for another episode of B and R at the Movies Podcast.
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: I am Barry.
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: And I'm Robin.
- 0:21SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 0:22SPEAKER_01: So this week it was my choice of film.
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: And this one has kind of been on my radar for a little while, and I finally decided that we're going to watch it.
- 0:32SPEAKER_01: A film that neither one of us has seen.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: So we're going to enjoy this one together for the first time.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: Called Is This Thing On?
- 0:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 0:40SPEAKER_01: So this came out 2025.
- 0:43SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 0:43SPEAKER_01: Uh starring Will Arnett, Laura Dern, Bradley Cooper, uh Andrea Day.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: Um and I'm told there's a bunch of comedians and that do like little cameo things.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: So I don't know if it's like they're gonna put so I'm I didn't I didn't look and see like if they're gonna play themselves or if they're gonna play characters or like versions of themselves or something like that.
- 1:11SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:12SPEAKER_02: Oh, that'd be interesting.
- 1:13SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: Um, but I do know that Sean Hayes is in this, which not surprising considering Will Arnett is the star of it, that Sean Hayes is in it, because they're buddies and they have a they have their podcast together and do stuff together.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: So there you go.
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: That makes sense.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: So they're they're pretty tight buddies.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: Um, but uh no no uh no Bateman on this one though.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: So it's like so they're missing the third the third part of their their podcast team.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: So Jason, where are you?
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: Well, and Jason and Bradley know each other, so I mean they can make this.
- 1:46SPEAKER_02: It was probably a conflict, you know, working somewhere and couldn't couldn't do it.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: Um I'm gonna tell you somebody who's listed for this cast, okay, and you are not gonna believe it.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: A hundred percent not gonna believe it.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: Do I know this person?
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: You do know this person.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: Okay now, this person is not playing themselves.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: They have a character name, right?
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: So it's it's somebody that you definitely know.
- 2:13SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: So remember, they're not gonna play themselves.
- 2:17SPEAKER_01: They have a name, right?
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: Are you ready for this one?
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: I am Peyton Manning.
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: Peyton.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: Peyton Manning.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: Good lord, child.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: You're trying, you're trying not acting.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: I don't, I don't know.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: We will see.
- 2:31SPEAKER_02: We will see how I don't think he has the personality for it.
- 2:36SPEAKER_02: He's kind of stiff.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: Unless that's what he's it's what he's gonna try to portray.
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 2:42SPEAKER_02: Well, maybe they maybe they, you know, they they geared it for him.
- 2:46SPEAKER_02: I'll probably tell him you'll be really comfortable because this is gonna be, you know, it's it's not you, but it's what you can handle.
- 2:52SPEAKER_02: Right, right.
- 2:53SPEAKER_02: So I've seen Paint Manny.
- 2:55SPEAKER_02: Whatever.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: I've seen like John Elway in films where he's playing himself.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: And so it's like, okay, well, obviously it's fine.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: Whatever.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: Um, there have been football players that have gone on to do great acting careers.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: Um, so um yes, so it's not it's possible.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: It is possible.
- 3:16SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: Um, however, I have never seen him act in anything.
- 3:20SPEAKER_02: No, I've only seen him in commercials, and that and he was really bad.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: Even the commercials are so goofy.
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: So again, I don't I don't know how big a part it is.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: All I know is that he's listed as as an actor in it, and he has a character's name, so it's not his name.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: Well, he's he's trying.
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: So there you go.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: We shall see.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: So it's gonna be interesting.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: And now we get uh to Bradley Cooper, is starring in the film, directing in the film.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: He's not the main character though.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: He's he's he wrote the screenplay with with Will Arnett.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: Um, so they kind of they they collabed on it.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: And uh Mark Campbell uh was also another one.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: Um Will Arnett is also listed as story by as well, and then there's another John Bishop is also listed as story by.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: So I so it sounds like it was like Will's project, yeah, and then brought Bradley in, and then they and then three of them developed the screenplay together off of the story.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: Um, so I know from what I know about this film is that it's set in New York City.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's a couple, which is um which is Will and Will Arnett and Laura Dern's character, right?
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: Um, they are going through a divorce.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: And that's what in the middle of them splitting up, and then he uh tries stand-up comedy, and I think it's like from an open mic, right?
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: And then that's my understanding, and then starts to go with it.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: Um, that's pretty much all I all I know about it.
- 5:02SPEAKER_02: I mean I like the premise, but right, why is it making me cringe a little bit that it's like you're too involved in it?
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: But because we got burned by Bradley before, because we had we had the maestro.
- 5:16unknown: Yeah.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: Well, that's where he played the main character.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: Because he was the main character in this.
- 5:21SPEAKER_02: But uh I mean he's not the main character.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: Out of out of the cast list, he's number four for top build.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so he's probably he I feel like he's gonna be in it a decent amount.
- 5:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, if you're writing it and you're directing it, just back off the acting, let somebody else do it.
- 5:38SPEAKER_02: I mean, you know, that's um Yeah.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: I I I mean, I understand, like, you know, if you've got this character in mind, like you know how this person's gonna be, then it should be okay, now you need to find that person.
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: And I get that sometimes that you know they were like, oh, well, this is kind of like geared for me, and it's like but it's I don't know, too many hats, too many hats, too many fingers and a lot.
- 6:00SPEAKER_02: I don't I don't so you know so I'm I'm I've I've got my fingers crossed because I really want to like this movie.
- 6:06SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: Really want to like this movie a lot, and because we we definitely like Will Renette, we definitely like Laura Dern, so we're already on board with those two.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: And like they're the and they're they are the two main, so I'm like, all right, you know, we got we got two goods.
- 6:22SPEAKER_02: It's not like it's a lack of talent.
- 6:24SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 6:24SPEAKER_02: I under even Bradley Cooper, yes, talent.
- 6:27SPEAKER_02: I get it.
- 6:28SPEAKER_02: I got it.
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 6:29SPEAKER_02: But yeah, it just depends how they pull it off.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and and who knows, maybe this could be the one where it's the perfect blend of everything together, yeah.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: Where the you know, nobody is really overshadowing of as far as like um feel like they took on too much and then stretched themselves thin.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: So I don't know.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: So may I mean because like you said, like Will is um you know part of the screenplay, you know, that you know, he came up with the screenplay as well, he's stored by him as well.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: So he's deeply invested in this too.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: So it's it's one of those where it's just like it's I I I I don't want to set the bar high and then fall short, right?
- 7:12SPEAKER_02: Right, but yeah, I I I have my fingers crossed.
- 7:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I really, really do.
- 7:16SPEAKER_02: I just I hope it's good.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: I I really hope it's good.
- 7:19SPEAKER_02: I think it it can be.
- 7:20SPEAKER_02: The premise seems very good.
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 7:23SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's what would draw me to it.
- 7:25SPEAKER_02: So we're gonna see.
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: Because yeah, because we've we've dived down the standard comedy hole several you know, multiple times, either, you know, in films or in with uh live people, um, actually, you know, and following following standard comedy and you know, finding some of our new favorites and stuff.
- 7:43SPEAKER_01: So um it's gonna be interesting of showing the um the New York comedy scene.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: Um, because I've seen it done uh I've seen it done before, but not as um it was done more of a period piece in the 70s, and so it wasn't done as recent.
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: This is supposed to be as like recent.
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: So there's not as many uh comedy spots as there used to be as like full-blown comedy clubs, but there's a lot of places of like open mics and stand in like just getting up and working out your material and stuff like that.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: So it's gonna be interesting to see like how how they blend in all that.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: Um, and then there are, but I mean there are still you know some very well established comedy clubs that are still live and kicking and they're still doing their thing.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah but yeah, it's gonna be it's gonna be interesting.
- 8:37SPEAKER_01: We'll see how we'll see how it goes.
- 8:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 8:40SPEAKER_02: So yeah, I'm I'm still I'm still on board.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: Cautiously optimistic.
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: But Peyton Manning, I I'll try not to giggle.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: You know, and and who knows?
- 8:49SPEAKER_02: But maybe I'm supposed to giggle.
- 8:50SPEAKER_02: Maybe he's supposed to be funny.
- 8:51SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: Oh, maybe he's mute.
- 8:55SPEAKER_02: Stop it.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: It's like no, he's like a security guard at the club, and he's just like a big burly guy, and he's just mute and doesn't say anything.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: Oh, too weird, too weird, too weird, too weird.
- 9:09SPEAKER_02: But we'll see.
- 9:10SPEAKER_02: We'll see.
- 9:11SPEAKER_02: I'll hunt for him.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: Oh, if he's a comic, it's gonna get weird.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: It's definitely gonna get weird.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 9:17SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's true, that's true.
- 9:19SPEAKER_02: Okay, all right, okay.
- 9:20SPEAKER_02: Now I'm excited.
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: Okay, I want to I want to watch this movie.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: All right, we're gonna dive in and watch Is This Thing On, and then we will come back a little bit talk about it.
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: Okay, all right, we will be back in a little while.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: All right, everybody, welcome back.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: We just got done watching Is This Thing On?
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: And even though both of us haven't seen this one, since this was my choice, I'll let you take us away on this one.
- 9:49SPEAKER_02: Oh, goody.
- 9:50SPEAKER_02: I get to um there was a lot about it I didn't like.
- 9:55SPEAKER_02: Oh no, oh no, I know, especially I'm watching this and going, Barry's loving this.
- 10:00SPEAKER_02: Oh, he's digging this, he is in there, he's going for it.
- 10:05SPEAKER_02: I and I was going, good for you.
- 10:08SPEAKER_02: I'm so happy that you did.
- 10:10SPEAKER_02: You did it.
- 10:11SPEAKER_02: I I there was a lot I didn't like.
- 10:14SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 10:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:16SPEAKER_02: There was uh I don't know.
- 10:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I can't believe Oh, strong.
- 10:24SPEAKER_02: If I'd seen this in the theater, I'm going.
- 10:27SPEAKER_02: I'm not sure if I should have watched that one.
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: Um whoa, okay.
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I wow.
- 10:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:34SPEAKER_02: Um I'm sure it's gonna be just the opposite of why you do like it.
- 10:39SPEAKER_02: See, that that's that's good to me.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: Okay, all right.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: We'll see.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: We'll see.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: So so let's get on.
- 10:47SPEAKER_02: Uh one thing I didn't like.
- 10:49SPEAKER_02: I I thought it was trying too hard to be quirky and have all the people talking over the people.
- 10:56SPEAKER_02: And um I that that really bothered me.
- 11:01SPEAKER_02: It was almost like I I wasn't having a chance to get to know anybody.
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 11:08SPEAKER_02: So I mean I have that problem.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: I think with with the the full cast, there's a lot of people.
- 11:16SPEAKER_02: And you know, well, and and the biggest one I had was when they're in his parents' house.
- 11:23SPEAKER_02: And that was just like, oh my god, just just shut up.
- 11:26SPEAKER_02: Just all you just shut up.
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: But that's what I think that's what you like.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: That's what you like.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: No, I didn't like it.
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: I didn't like that.
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: I didn't like it.
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: No, the whole the whole time I'm in there, I'm like, get out.
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: You just got just just get out of there.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: This is insane.
- 11:40SPEAKER_02: But you know, I was just like, I I didn't no, I didn't enjoy that.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: So it was because that part you felt was it was forced or uncomfortable?
- 11:51SPEAKER_02: I I think a lot of it was I could tell they were trying really hard to make it real.
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:57SPEAKER_02: Um, why were people standing so close to each other when they're talking?
- 12:02SPEAKER_02: That was bothering me for a really long time.
- 12:04SPEAKER_02: It's like w what's going on?
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:07SPEAKER_02: You know.
- 12:08SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, and and I I understand trying to make it, you know, feel like you're really in the subway, you're really walking down the street, that sort of thing.
- 12:19SPEAKER_02: I got it.
- 12:20SPEAKER_02: I get it.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: Right, right.
- 12:21SPEAKER_02: But I think it just it went too far for me.
- 12:23SPEAKER_02: It really did.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: It pushed it where it took it out of the world of making it feel real and make it and actually took it so far that it made it feel art more artificial.
- 12:36SPEAKER_02: It made it feel forced.
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: Okay, okay to me.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: It did.
- 12:39SPEAKER_02: It was just like I can understand that.
- 12:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was kind of like I did I did feel there were times when he was doing his stand-up, like when he did the one set um where it was like back and forth behind him, around him, like kept going, it was like it just kept circling around him constantly.
- 12:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: And I I at first it wasn't bad, but then it was like, okay, you're gonna do this the whole time, it's a little much.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: I would have done that type of shot and then cut to another stationary shot and have it be like the crowd view of like what of their experience from it.
- 13:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I just I the stand-up stuff, um, the way it was filmed was okay.
- 13:23SPEAKER_02: Because I I don't know, I guess that was a little different for me, but yeah, yeah, I just I could see the effort and I didn't want to see the effort.
- 13:34SPEAKER_02: But okay, that's me.
- 13:35SPEAKER_02: You loved it.
- 13:37SPEAKER_02: What what did you love about it?
- 13:39SPEAKER_02: Go ahead and tell me.
- 13:39SPEAKER_02: Maybe you'll change my mind now.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: So um, well, I like I like the rhythms of it.
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: Um, I like that it felt it was that they kind of had for me, in my opinion, it was that they they made it feel natural, they made it feel like actual conversations with people, um, where you don't always do I say my full complete thought pause, you take over, you say your full complete thought pause, I take over, you know, back and forth like that.
- 14:07SPEAKER_01: It's more because conversations I feel don't happen that way.
- 14:11SPEAKER_02: It's like you're talking and then somebody else kind of chimes in with like their their piece of it, and then you kind of like pick and the part that I really liked when it was that kind of talking was with it, he was with the comedians.
- 14:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, that's that's I love that.
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 14:25SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: I thought that was really good.
- 14:27SPEAKER_02: It was just some of the other stuff that I didn't like.
- 14:30SPEAKER_02: But no, but go ahead, keep going.
- 14:32SPEAKER_02: What else did you like?
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: I mean, I I I like the fact that he he goes and buys the a Volkswagen van and makes it, you know, the new Volkswagen van, and he's kind of like stoked about it that he's he's got a van.
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: So I thought that was kind of funny, where it's like, okay, you took something that you know you would have thought was cool when you were young, and then now it's being brought back, and then now it's cut you're trying to make it cool again.
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: Thought that was I thought that was kind of funny because it's kind of like a mark of like what he was going through where it's like okay, he's getting a divorce, and it's like so he's trying to re re-find himself again, and that was him as a solo person, as a single man.
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: That's that was the him he knew, and he's trying to find that guy again.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: So I felt like that.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: That felt that felt kind of real where it was like, yeah, I was like, Yeah, I could totally see that.
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: Um, I love the conversations with him and his kids.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: I thought those, I thought those felt really good.
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: Those were pretty good, especially the one in the in the van.
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: In the band.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: And it's like, um, because it's it's like real talk where it's just like, okay, yeah, how do you explain to your kids, you know, what you're what you guys are going through?
- 15:42SPEAKER_01: How do you explain to them like what your process is for doing this, you know, because you're trying to take these very complex emotional things that are, you know, that you can't quantify down into a very small little topic very quickly and try and explain it to a a kid and make it where they can kind of understand what you're going through.
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: And that's why I thought it was great where he's just like, he's like, Yeah, you know the the big dragon thing.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: It's like, yeah.
- 16:08SPEAKER_01: And I was like, because that's what it is.
- 16:09SPEAKER_01: That's I'm like, that's perfect.
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: That's exactly what it'd be.
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: You try to relate to something that they can identify with, and it's like, okay, you're trying to get it.
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: So I love that I love that conversation a lot.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: I thought that was I thought that was really good.
- 16:21SPEAKER_01: I like showing his his progress during stand-up, where it was, you know, he gets up and you know, he he doesn't really have a set, he doesn't really know what he's doing, and then he kind of just kind of stumbles around and fumbles into it, and then it's like, okay, then come back, okay, yeah.
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: And then comes back and he works a little works out a little bit and finds a little bit more.
- 16:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: Um, I thought they did a great job of showcasing uh the comedy cellar 100%.
- 16:47SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 16:48SPEAKER_01: So I mean they definitely made it, made it, you know, where you definitely want to go, go check out the cellar, which is a is an actual comedy club in New York, so definitely um so I I like that as that aspect of a lot.
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: Um I liked all the handheld that was done to make it it, it definitely made it, it made it feel pretty real that it was like you're you're in amongst the people that are going that are having these conversations, you know, as if you're just another participant there.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: Um so it didn't feel like a lot of staged and like really hyper produced shots of her like they're walking through Grand Central Station and it's like it's a continuous walk through Grand Central, and it's like it's like they could have, you know, they probably had most of it shut down.
- 17:35SPEAKER_01: They probably had extras that were there for the you know the other people, but then again they couldn't.
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: Maybe they you know they only had a few, maybe you know, because they only close off, you know, can only close off so much or something.
- 17:45SPEAKER_01: So I thought that was I thought that was really cool.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: Um I don't know, I thought it was kind of cool that that they they showed New York without without really slamming it home.
- 17:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:57SPEAKER_01: Of like they yeah, you saw Grand Central for the one shot, and then just of of them walking through it, and then the the comedy cellar.
- 18:07SPEAKER_01: And then other than that, it's like you know, they just got street shots of New York and stuff, and it's like no, you know, they they weren't at Rockefeller Center, they weren't at the Empire State Building, they didn't go to, you know, it's like so it wasn't it wasn't the tourist kind of film of like you know, here we're showing off all of New York kind of thing.
- 18:27SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: So I I like that.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: I was kind of worried there at first when it was starting in Grand Central, I was like, oh, here we go, greatest hits in New York, you know.
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: It's like but it wasn't that way.
- 18:38SPEAKER_01: I thought that was good.
- 18:39SPEAKER_01: Um, I did not like Bradley Cooper's character.
- 18:42SPEAKER_02: Oh no, he he just pissed me off every time he was on screen.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: Uh so bad.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, is this supposed to be fundy?
- 18:51SPEAKER_02: I don't I didn't and I didn't I didn't really find a lot of the humor in this.
- 18:56SPEAKER_02: I think you found more than I did.
- 18:58SPEAKER_01: I I definitely found a lot of like when he's taking what you know what's going on in his life and he's translating that into his set and and doing that stuff.
- 19:09SPEAKER_01: I did actually I mean I did find a lot of it, you know, that was going on pretty, pretty funny.
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: I like when he was talking about like the the poster of his wife that he had blown up and you know Bradley Cooper saying he's like he's like, Well, can't we just turn it around?
- 19:26SPEAKER_01: And then he takes it off the wall and he literally turns it around.
- 19:30SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 19:30SPEAKER_01: And I was thinking, I'm like, oh my, that's hell, that's hilarious.
- 19:34SPEAKER_01: That's great.
- 19:34SPEAKER_01: It's weird's weird.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: It was so perfect.
- 19:36SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 19:37SPEAKER_02: I I think I've pinpointed what bothers me.
- 19:40SPEAKER_02: Go for it.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: What you got?
- 19:41SPEAKER_02: Okay, so they were trying to make it really real.
- 19:44SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 19:46SPEAKER_02: Who's going to work?
- 19:47SPEAKER_02: Who's making the money to buy the new vehicle?
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: I was waiting for it too.
- 19:52SPEAKER_02: I see I see him with a coat and tie.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: You never see him actually go to work.
- 19:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and it's like, and you know, and you know, Laura Nurne's character is not working.
- 20:02SPEAKER_01: Nope.
- 20:03SPEAKER_02: And it's like Somebody gotta be paying for the money.
- 20:08SPEAKER_02: Where is this coming from?
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: So I don't know.
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: I kept waiting for it.
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: I kept waiting for it.
- 20:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was just like it's like it never happened.
- 20:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I just I didn't understand that part.
- 20:18SPEAKER_02: It's like you know, especially when you split up.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:24SPEAKER_02: The money crunch just is amazing.
- 20:28SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, especially because he's talking about like he's still paying the mortgage and paying for his apartment.
- 20:33SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 20:33SPEAKER_02: And it's I mean, you know, so yeah, that's a lot.
- 20:36SPEAKER_02: So I know they're trying to make it real, but it didn't feel real.
- 20:40SPEAKER_01: That that that I agree with.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: That that I I absolutely agree with.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: Because I kept waiting for it too.
- 20:45SPEAKER_01: I was like, because he would see him dressed in his suit, and it was just like, I'm like, okay, now we're gonna see his office, now we're gonna see where he works, and then you know, have like you know, his co-workers come over and console him or whatever, you know, kind of thing, you know, which would have been a cliche, of course.
- 21:01SPEAKER_02: But at the same time, it was but it would have opened up his character a little bit more, it would have identified his world a little bit better.
- 21:08SPEAKER_02: Yes, this way it was like, well, yeah, yeah, that is very true.
- 21:12SPEAKER_02: That is so you know, it was trying really hard to be really real and stuff, but it was the the real part didn't connect for me.
- 21:21SPEAKER_01: Well, I I'll tell you something that I know for a fact is real.
- 21:24SPEAKER_02: What's that?
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: So, okay, so you know who Sean Hayes is?
- 21:29SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: So the guy that was playing his husband that was in it is his actual husband.
- 21:35SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's right.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: That's Scott, that's Scotty.
- 21:37SPEAKER_01: That's actually his actual husband.
- 21:38SPEAKER_01: And they've been like that.
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: They've been they've been married uh since about like 2014 or something.
- 21:43SPEAKER_01: So it's like so when he so when he came up on that, I was like, I was like, is that Scotty?
- 21:49SPEAKER_01: I was like, that's hell, that's great that they put him together and they just made them like because because it's just them being being them being them.
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: And so I thought that was great.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: I understand.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Understand that they I wanted more character development and stuff because it's like okay because they're uh you know they're in that you the this world with them too, and then it's like you really don't find out anything about the their characters at all, and it's like they're just kind of like background noise almost, and so I wish that there would have been a little bit more with uh with Sean and Scott's characters, and so and even with Bradley Cooper's character and his wife.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: Um I she pissed me off.
- 22:33SPEAKER_01: She was yeah, she was like so she was just so mean.
- 22:38SPEAKER_02: Who would be friends?
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: No, yeah.
- 22:40SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, I just yeah.
- 22:42SPEAKER_02: So um it it was hard to understand why you would want to be friends with these people.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: Well, and both because both of them were kind of mean and they were they really were and they were just negative energy, yeah.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: It's like weird negative energy.
- 22:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I just I I was waiting for so okay, here's my thing.
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: Like when we're start it's starting off and you're meeting those characters and those people, right?
- 23:05SPEAKER_01: And I was thinking, I'm like, okay, they're gonna get a divorce, and then they're gonna say, like, oh, are you gonna go over to their house because you're their friend?
- 23:16SPEAKER_01: And then she would be like, Wait, I thought they were your friend, there you were their friend, and I was going for you.
- 23:22SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 23:23SPEAKER_01: And I thought that I thought that's the way it was gonna go because because they were just so neat, you know, those characters, those other characters were just so negative.
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: And I thought, like, oh, I'm putting up with these people because she wants to be here, and she's thinking I'm putting up with these people because he wants to be here, and then come to find out that oh, so so ne they're not really our friends.
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: And I would have been hilarious, I wanted that so bad, and I kept thinking, I'm like, that is gonna be so good, and I'm like, that's gonna be great.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: It didn't happen, didn't happen.
- 23:52SPEAKER_01: And it's like, but now that I know it's that it's so it's based on the true story, and I and it's inspired.
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: It well, inspired by, yes, right, and so I don't know how much of it is literal for like this is what happened, yeah, and then I don't know how much was embellished or altered or changed or you know, or you know, um or made up.
- 24:16SPEAKER_02: I think the part that I knew is that yeah, there was a guy that and he did just kind of stumble into you know open night night, and there was a time when his uh ex-wife or wife he split up with was that just happened to see him on stage.
- 24:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that that part I know is is you know the truth.
- 24:39SPEAKER_01: I I really liked that moment.
- 24:41SPEAKER_01: I really like that when she's there watching him, he doesn't know it, yeah, and he's talking about her and he's talking about their lives together, and then she stops and decides not to leave and then and then watches the set.
- 24:56SPEAKER_01: And I was just like, I was like, oh, this is good.
- 24:59SPEAKER_01: I was like, I really, I really like that.
- 25:00SPEAKER_02: I like that because that was kind of yeah and Peyton Manning.
- 25:04SPEAKER_01: Um not horrible, not not the worst, not the worst I've seen.
- 25:08SPEAKER_01: Actually, between Bradley Cooper's character and Peyton Manning, I think I'm taking Manning.
- 25:14SPEAKER_02: I think so.
- 25:15SPEAKER_02: I mean, I just and and you know, I mean, he he was showing a little emotion, he was showing a little like you know, rhythm, you know, to his speaking and stuff like that.
- 25:26SPEAKER_01: But it it was so funny when he's talking about being about coaching and sports, yeah, and I was thinking like, oh, that ain't a that is not a stretch for Mr.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: Mr.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: Manning that they're gonna be.
- 25:37SPEAKER_02: No, it's like okay, I'm I'm I'm believing it.
- 25:39SPEAKER_01: A hundred percent, a hundred percent.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: So I thought that was I thought that was really I thought that was really pretty, pretty funny when he's doing that.
- 25:46SPEAKER_00: So I was like, I was like, all right, that's really good.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: I like that.
- 25:49SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, I I mean I I did I think he did stellar, no.
- 25:53SPEAKER_01: No, um I wasn't expecting that.
- 25:55SPEAKER_01: I wasn't expecting that either.
- 25:56SPEAKER_01: I set the bar really low when I looked for that.
- 26:02SPEAKER_01: But yeah, I was like, I looked, I was like, I can't can't say I hated it, you know.
- 26:06SPEAKER_01: It's like it wasn't it wasn't that bad.
- 26:08SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, Bradley Cooper's character was a lot worse.
- 26:11SPEAKER_01: And it's like it's like Yeah, I I was waiting to understand his character, and I still can't he had he had no he had a weird arc of like arc to nowhere.
- 26:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's like it was like it was bizarre, and it was like yeah, I didn't and then the no, he was just kind of uh he's just uh irritating me.
- 26:33SPEAKER_01: He he was an he he was uh um an enigma.
- 26:37SPEAKER_01: Um he's uh a kind of like a leech on this story where it's like yeah, yes, he serves no actual purpose.
- 26:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so I mean it's really kind of sad he didn't have to put himself in the film at all, really.
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: The character itself didn't really serve any purpose, it did not drive the story whatsoever.
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: So it's like he didn't need need to be there at all.
- 26:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I just didn't understand that one.
- 27:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, bizarre.
- 27:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's just um I mean I'm sure there's some reasoning.
- 27:07SPEAKER_02: I know there's reasoning behind him.
- 27:09SPEAKER_02: Because you know, people when they're making these films, I know they're thinking about it, right?
- 27:13SPEAKER_02: And they're working on it, and they're working it out, and they're doing their scenes, and they're really trying to make it what they want to make.
- 27:20SPEAKER_02: So it's not like it's it's all ad-lib or anything like that.
- 27:23SPEAKER_01: But I I think this is my this is my my my feelings on this.
- 27:28SPEAKER_01: When you have somebody who is so invested in the project from the conception and the writing and the you know, and the directing and the acting, and and he's doing all this stuff, you can't be objective enough.
- 27:44SPEAKER_01: You can't see the force.
- 27:46SPEAKER_02: I think it takes a really special person that can probably pull that off.
- 27:49SPEAKER_02: I think it's very difficult.
- 27:50SPEAKER_01: I think it's I think it really is too.
- 27:52SPEAKER_01: And I think that it's like you need that outside perspective, you need that outside look of somebody going like this is not working.
- 27:59SPEAKER_01: I understand what you're doing, I understand what you're going for, but this right here is not working.
- 28:04SPEAKER_01: This is what we gotta do, this is what we gotta do to change it.
- 28:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I don't I don't know if he had that on this because I feel like he was so deep into the project that it was kind I feel like it might have just been like his baby of like, okay, this is our thing, we're doing it.
- 28:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um I I gotta say, you know, the the movies that I seen that he directed, I don't like.
- 28:26SPEAKER_02: Uh I don't like the A Star is Born.
- 28:29SPEAKER_02: Well, you like that.
- 28:30SPEAKER_01: I like that one.
- 28:31SPEAKER_02: That was I thought it was okay.
- 28:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:34SPEAKER_02: Um, and I'm gonna give that an okay.
- 28:37SPEAKER_02: But the others ones I've seen, uh-uh.
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: Maestro, no.
- 28:40SPEAKER_02: No, no, and this one?
- 28:42SPEAKER_02: No.
- 28:43SPEAKER_02: I you know, yeah.
- 28:44SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 28:45SPEAKER_02: I just you know, I I'm sure he's gonna make a lot more and I'll probably see more.
- 28:50SPEAKER_02: And I'll I'll just keep hanging in there.
- 28:52SPEAKER_02: But so far, mm-mm.
- 28:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:55SPEAKER_01: Maybe and that's the thing, like maybe he can do like a director where he's not the everything.
- 29:02SPEAKER_01: He's not the the writer, the producer, the screenwriter.
- 29:06SPEAKER_01: He's not the producer, he's not you know the ad in it, you know, yeah, and he can just direct.
- 29:11SPEAKER_01: And maybe maybe that would be a good project.
- 29:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, I guess I would like to see him try that just to direct.
- 29:17SPEAKER_02: Let me let me see your directing style when you're directing other actors and not yourself.
- 29:23SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 29:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but uh yeah, I just no uh no.
- 29:29SPEAKER_02: So luckily we I saw it this way and not in the movie theater.
- 29:32SPEAKER_02: So thank you very much for that.
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 29:37SPEAKER_01: I I still like it.
- 29:38SPEAKER_01: I know, I know you do.
- 29:40SPEAKER_01: I still like it.
- 29:40SPEAKER_02: I know you do, but I just mm-mm.
- 29:43SPEAKER_01: I mean there there, I mean, is it is it a perfect film?
- 29:46SPEAKER_01: Um no, I would not I would not say it's not a perfect film.
- 29:50SPEAKER_02: You don't have a perfect film.
- 29:52SPEAKER_02: We know that.
- 29:53SPEAKER_01: I know there's some that I do, you do not.
- 29:56SPEAKER_01: I've got some that that get c that would probably consider close, but not but not perfect.
- 30:01SPEAKER_01: But I but can't say I hate it.
- 30:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like and like we've talked before, you know, when a movie takes you on a ride, yeah.
- 30:08SPEAKER_02: This was not a fun ride for me.
- 30:09SPEAKER_01: No.
- 30:10SPEAKER_01: Not at all.
- 30:11SPEAKER_01: This this felt like a real ride.
- 30:13SPEAKER_01: And that's why that's why for me, it's like I mean, yeah.
- 30:17SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's like, and then like the you know, it's the relationship stuff of it where it's like relationships are messy, you know.
- 30:24SPEAKER_01: It's not it, it's not always, you know, clean cut, cut and dry, you know.
- 30:28SPEAKER_01: It's like it's no, sometimes they're a little screwed up.
- 30:34SPEAKER_01: So it's like I kind of like that.
- 30:35SPEAKER_01: That's like it's not it's it's kind of it's not a cliche of like okay.
- 30:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's not a cliche.
- 30:43SPEAKER_01: It's not like, oh, you know, they you know, they had a big blow-up fight, they get divorced, they never see each other, you know, kind of kind of situation.
- 30:52SPEAKER_01: And I think it's like, yeah, you've got kids, like, you know, you're still in each other's lives, you're still in and out, you know, and it's like trying to figure out like, you know, is it okay for me to come in the house I don't live in anymore?
- 31:05SPEAKER_01: You know, it's like, is this okay?
- 31:07SPEAKER_01: What's going on?
- 31:08SPEAKER_01: You know, it's like and trying to figure out like the new rules and stuff.
- 31:10SPEAKER_01: And I and I thought that stuff was really was really good.
- 31:13SPEAKER_01: It was really authentic.
- 31:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because it's you know, it's different.
- 31:17SPEAKER_02: It's I just I just think that when a couple decides to well, I I know they didn't get a divorce, but they separated.
- 31:26SPEAKER_02: They thought a long time about separating and they did separate.
- 31:29SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 31:30SPEAKER_02: Um did you not realize what you were doing when you did it?
- 31:37SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, what what was your thought process on this?
- 31:40SPEAKER_01: Do you were you not sure?
- 31:41SPEAKER_01: Did they did they just uh arrive at this conclusion hastily?
- 31:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because in the beginning it seemed like they were pretty solid on yeah, we really just need to do this.
- 31:50SPEAKER_02: You know, it's like okay, well then do that.
- 31:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 31:55SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, it was it was it was confusing for me.
- 31:59SPEAKER_01: So that part of it you didn't find no incredible, real.
- 32:04SPEAKER_02: No, no.
- 32:06SPEAKER_02: I just they because they think they seemed like two very intelligent people.
- 32:11SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 32:12SPEAKER_02: Um, the main characters were very intelligent, thinking, think things through, you know, they're thinking about the whole thing and they're right and they're you know, they're changing the lives of their with their children and that sort of thing.
- 32:25SPEAKER_02: And you're not sure?
- 32:27SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 32:28SPEAKER_02: You you really felt it was I don't know.
- 32:31SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 32:31SPEAKER_01: I just I just and then even when they were talking about like you know, when they were they were separated, but they were like getting back together a little bit, and then they were saying, like, oh, we don't want to tell the kids right because we don't want to add more conf confusion to them.
- 32:46SPEAKER_02: And I think that can probably happen.
- 32:51SPEAKER_02: Okay, gotcha, gotcha on that.
- 32:53SPEAKER_02: But it's still it's just weird.
- 32:55SPEAKER_02: It's just like yeah, I didn't understand.
- 32:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:58SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 32:59SPEAKER_02: It's it it's probably is the way maybe that's really really is the way it went in the story that's right.
- 33:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it totally could have been.
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's right.
- 33:07SPEAKER_02: But it just felt like especially when you have kids.
- 33:12SPEAKER_02: If you don't have kids separating, okay.
- 33:16SPEAKER_02: You you you can separate a trial separation, you know.
- 33:20SPEAKER_02: You're affecting each other, you're not affecting the kids.
- 33:22SPEAKER_01: Right, right.
- 33:23SPEAKER_02: You're affecting the children.
- 33:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, and you know, and yeah, it's it's it's huge.
- 33:30SPEAKER_02: It's nice, it's it's really big.
- 33:32SPEAKER_02: You gotta you gotta think this stuff through.
- 33:34SPEAKER_01: And I could have seen like, you know, they do like a you know, a separate a separation, but you know, they're still living in the house together because they haven't really got it.
- 33:50SPEAKER_02: You know, it was just like, you know, they're just kind of moving away from each other.
- 33:54SPEAKER_01: Right, you know, right.
- 33:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and it's like, oh, she's got his life, she's got her life, he's got his, you know, they kind of like they don't really intermingle with each other's lives anymore, but they're still under the same house, and you know, still and the whole thing too, I think when you separate, you really know that the love is gone, right?
- 34:16SPEAKER_02: And the even liking each other is gone.
- 34:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and when you feel that, then you know there's nothing else to hold on to.
- 34:24SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 34:25SPEAKER_02: They separated and they still seemed like they still had stuff to hold on to.
- 34:30SPEAKER_02: So why are you separating?
- 34:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, was it a hasty decision?
- 34:35SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:36SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 34:36SPEAKER_02: I just no.
- 34:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:38SPEAKER_02: Sorry, sorry.
- 34:40SPEAKER_02: I know it was supposed to be real, but it didn't that part just felt weird.
- 34:44SPEAKER_01: I gotcha, I gotcha.
- 34:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:46SPEAKER_01: Well, and and there were times of it where it's like it felt like you said, like it, like, okay, they didn't think this this fully through before they they jumped to that conclusion of like, oh, we need to get separated.
- 34:59SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 34:59SPEAKER_01: And it's like, yeah, okay, you know, maybe they needed time apart, you know, of like just doing different things and stuff, so they're not always always together.
- 35:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 35:09SPEAKER_02: Kind of thing.
- 35:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 35:10SPEAKER_02: It's and but luckily it it's not like they got divorced and then decided to get back to the city.
- 35:15SPEAKER_02: That would have been that would have been too much of a stretch for me.
- 35:18SPEAKER_02: I would have been, I've been yeah, no, no, I'd be I'd be talking to the screen.
- 35:23SPEAKER_02: No, that's not happening.
- 35:25SPEAKER_02: What are you doing?
- 35:26SPEAKER_02: What are you doing?
- 35:27SPEAKER_02: No.
- 35:28SPEAKER_01: I did like it though when he said he's like, oh yeah, it's like I'm kind of having an affair with uh my you know ex, you know, even though we're not divorced yet, you know.
- 35:37SPEAKER_02: It's like it was like it's weird, yeah.
- 35:41SPEAKER_02: It's just weird, yeah, yeah.
- 35:44SPEAKER_02: But uh okay.
- 35:45SPEAKER_02: Well, well, well, I'm glad I saw it.
- 35:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I really am because I this was one that was on my list.
- 35:51SPEAKER_01: It was actually on both of our lists, so it was like, yeah, it really was, you know, so I was it was good to see it.
- 35:57SPEAKER_02: I guess it was good to see it together since we kind of split on this one.
- 36:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 36:02SPEAKER_01: Well, and that's because there there are times when I have a movie that I've seen and I process it, and then I'm like, oh, this is a film you'll like.
- 36:12SPEAKER_01: And then it's like that's why I bring it.
- 36:13SPEAKER_01: That's why I bring it up.
- 36:14SPEAKER_02: So if you had watched this movie without me, uh-huh, would you have thought I'd like it?
- 36:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:20SPEAKER_01: And I would have been totally wrong.
- 36:24SPEAKER_01: So now it's like I don't feel as bad because we watched it together.
- 36:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we didn't know.
- 36:30SPEAKER_01: So we didn't know.
- 36:31SPEAKER_01: We didn't know.
- 36:32SPEAKER_02: No, no idea.
- 36:32SPEAKER_02: I'm going into it blind.
- 36:34SPEAKER_02: Completely blind.
- 36:35SPEAKER_02: Completely blind, yeah.
- 36:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 36:37SPEAKER_01: I I do tend to find though, it's like when I choose a film that neither one of us has seen, it tends to not always go as great for you.
- 36:49SPEAKER_00: Because there have been some that we both have a lot of them.
- 36:52SPEAKER_02: It's like I've heard about it, right?
- 36:54SPEAKER_02: I'm interested.
- 36:55SPEAKER_02: I really want to see it just to see, you know, what it's all about.
- 36:58SPEAKER_02: You know, I'm always open to it being, you know, we I think we both are.
- 37:02SPEAKER_02: We're very open to it, whatever.
- 37:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 37:06SPEAKER_02: But uh, yeah, this one, this one's definitely, you know.
- 37:10SPEAKER_02: If we if we if you had the DVD, I would not borrow it.
- 37:15SPEAKER_02: And here the whole time once was enough for me.
- 37:18SPEAKER_00: And here the whole time I'm thinking I need to put this on my list because I need to find it and book it.
- 37:23SPEAKER_02: Oh, I'm sure you will.
- 37:24SPEAKER_02: I as I'm watching, I'm going, Barry's loving this.
- 37:27SPEAKER_02: I I said, I am so not, but he is.
- 37:29SPEAKER_02: I can tell I I just know this is his deal.
- 37:32SPEAKER_02: He he loves it, he loves it, he loves the whole thing.
- 37:35SPEAKER_01: It's yeah, it's it's up my alley.
- 37:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:37SPEAKER_02: Well, so this is one that other people should watch, you know, figure it out.
- 37:40SPEAKER_01: But yeah, and this is what do you think?
- 37:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because you know, I mean who knows, you know, you you might like it, you may not.
- 37:48SPEAKER_02: But it'd probably be either a love or hate thing.
- 37:52SPEAKER_02: Not hate.
- 37:53SPEAKER_02: I don't hate it.
- 37:54SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 37:54SPEAKER_01: I'm just gonna say it just wasn't it didn't speak to you.
- 37:57SPEAKER_02: It really didn't.
- 37:58SPEAKER_02: And I did I just didn't like the ride it took me on.
- 38:00SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 38:00SPEAKER_01: Uh which told me that's a good thing.
- 38:01SPEAKER_02: Which is our metaphor, I think that's our metaphor.
- 38:04SPEAKER_02: I was thinking of a roller coaster or something when we talk about that.
- 38:07SPEAKER_02: But exactly.
- 38:08SPEAKER_02: But yeah, I just mm-mm.
- 38:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 38:10SPEAKER_02: And I was kind of waiting to to really like it.
- 38:14SPEAKER_02: And really like the characters.
- 38:16SPEAKER_02: Um no.
- 38:18SPEAKER_01: It never got there for you.
- 38:19SPEAKER_02: Didn't didn't get there.
- 38:20SPEAKER_02: Didn't get there.
- 38:21SPEAKER_02: Sorry.
- 38:22SPEAKER_01: Dang, sorry.
- 38:23SPEAKER_01: Well.
- 38:24SPEAKER_02: But I'm glad you liked it.
- 38:25SPEAKER_02: And I knew I knew you would.
- 38:27SPEAKER_02: I knew you would.
- 38:28SPEAKER_01: I knew I I did feel like, yeah, because I felt like I'm like, oh, I'm laughing at all this stuff, and I'm like, and I don't hear you laugh at all.
- 38:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, I don't laugh out loud that often.
- 38:38SPEAKER_01: Occasionally, occasionally, you know, it has to be pretty big, you know.
- 38:42SPEAKER_01: I can I can I can enjoy my I think you got you got more out of the stand-up set time of it than the other side.
- 38:50SPEAKER_02: I th I I like that because I was kind of looking forward to that.
- 38:53SPEAKER_02: You know, it's kind of like you know, just kind of being being rough and and you know, you know, his his his material wasn't polished, yeah, and just kind of doing it, and it's like that's kind of brave.
- 39:03SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 39:03SPEAKER_02: And people are kind of like encouraging him, except they're telling him, you know, you're really bad at this, but you're but you're a good guy.
- 39:11SPEAKER_00: But you're a good guy, yeah.
- 39:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 39:13SPEAKER_02: You know, but then he keeps coming back, and it's like, I like that idea of of something that you know is kind of kind of scary, but you you still want to keep doing it.
- 39:22SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 39:23SPEAKER_02: It's kind of like me going bowling, okay?
- 39:26SPEAKER_02: You can really bad at it.
- 39:28SPEAKER_01: But you work at it and if you were, you know, if you work at it and you go a bunch and then it's like then over time.
- 39:36SPEAKER_02: I might get up to a hundred.
- 39:38SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 39:38SPEAKER_01: That's probably you might crack that hundred.
- 39:41SPEAKER_02: But I still love it.
- 39:42SPEAKER_02: I have the best time, but I'm bad at it.
- 39:46SPEAKER_02: And I'm not I'm not embarrassed how bad I am either.
- 39:49SPEAKER_02: But I I enjoy it, you know.
- 39:52SPEAKER_02: So I think there is something about just kind of doing something that, yeah, maybe you you're not that good at it, and maybe you'll get better.
- 40:00SPEAKER_01: I don't like that he's not, you know, he wasn't great, you know, starting off, but it's okay.
- 40:06SPEAKER_02: I didn't want him to be, but it was like it looks like it didn't feel painful.
- 40:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 40:11SPEAKER_02: You know, and I'm going, yay, his first time, and it didn't feel painful.
- 40:15SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 40:16SPEAKER_01: It was just like it and it's like, yeah, you know, it's like, you know, and they you know, he had the the other comics that would, you know, give him encouragement or discouragement, you know, and then which is also could be encouragement depending on how you how you look at it.
- 40:30SPEAKER_02: And a part of it is just you know, if you love it, hang in there.
- 40:33SPEAKER_01: That's it.
- 40:33SPEAKER_01: That's it.
- 40:34SPEAKER_02: You know, nobody's gonna push you out.
- 40:36SPEAKER_02: You you walked into this, you can walk out of it.
- 40:38SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 40:39SPEAKER_02: But if you walk in and you you kind of like it, you want to keep exploring it, keep doing it.
- 40:44SPEAKER_01: And I like the way that he that it this the comedy, the stand-up comedy was approached of like, this is his therapy sessions.
- 40:52SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 40:52SPEAKER_01: This is his way of talking out what's going on in his life, what he's dealing with, and you know, and and that's why they were the first time up there, it was literally he I mean, he did drop, he did do a couple little jokes, but it wasn't really, it was more he's just like, This is what I'm going through, you know, and it's like and I I like that honest um look of stand-up.
- 41:19SPEAKER_02: I really like that part it of being real and raw, yeah.
- 41:24SPEAKER_02: That I liked that I the other part of the movie, mm-mm.
- 41:28SPEAKER_02: That part of the movie I really liked.
- 41:29SPEAKER_02: If they could have made that just real and raw and the rest of his life a little bit different and not like so chaotic and weird.
- 41:38SPEAKER_01: I think of it more like um like Jerry Jerry Seinfeld's documentary comedian, where it's just he's going around, he's hitting the clubs, he's working out the material and stuff, and he's and you know, there's other comics and stuff, you know, he's talking, talking with, and you know, they're having their their meals and stuff, and they're just you know, just you know, just talking.
- 42:00SPEAKER_01: And it's like and so all I love that I love that aspect.
- 42:04SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 42:04SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 42:05SPEAKER_02: I think I would have enjoyed the movie if when he walked into the club, it was like that.
- 42:11SPEAKER_02: It was real and kind of kind of messy and um I felt that.
- 42:16SPEAKER_02: And then when he when he would walk out, it would be different.
- 42:22SPEAKER_01: Oh, oh, it would be different.
- 42:25SPEAKER_01: Oh, so like different like like cinematography-wise, different different light.
- 42:30SPEAKER_01: Oh, I mean, you could totally do it, but I mean because you could do it.
- 42:32SPEAKER_02: But they can they they kept it all the way to it.
- 42:34SPEAKER_01: They kept that same look, yes.
- 42:35SPEAKER_01: All the way to it.
- 42:36SPEAKER_01: They they did keep that look consistent.
- 42:38SPEAKER_02: But I wanted if he could have like discovered that in there, and that's what was part of it that was bringing him back because it was that.
- 42:47SPEAKER_01: I like that.
- 42:47SPEAKER_01: Because like you get like that when you're in the club part and you it's all handheld and it's really gritty and then he walks out on the street and then it's it's almost like silence, yeah, and it's and he's in his head again.
- 43:00SPEAKER_02: And he's doing his thing.
- 43:02SPEAKER_01: That would be that would be ooh, I like this.
- 43:04SPEAKER_01: This would be really good.
- 43:06SPEAKER_02: Because then it's like such a visual contrast and feel and why why people probably come become stand-ups, yeah.
- 43:15SPEAKER_02: Be give you know, give me more of that.
- 43:17SPEAKER_02: I could already because you can't find that on the street, right?
- 43:20SPEAKER_01: Oh, you imagine like a doll, almost like a dolly shot of him walking down the street, so it's a dolly following behind him, like stationary, like it's not moving or anything, just just rolling right with him.
- 43:31SPEAKER_01: The moment he steps into the club and then it's handheld, and then it's moving.
- 43:35SPEAKER_02: It's almost like that's where life is happening.
- 43:38SPEAKER_01: That's where that's where it's gritty.
- 43:39SPEAKER_02: You know, and that and that that that would mean more for me watching it, thinking that yeah, this is truly where he's getting his stuff out of him.
- 43:48SPEAKER_02: You can't get it out of him any other place but here.
- 43:52SPEAKER_01: Oh, I like that.
- 43:52SPEAKER_01: That's what would keep him coming back.
- 43:54SPEAKER_01: Oh, I really like that idea.
- 43:56SPEAKER_02: And maybe that's what they were kind of going for.
- 43:58SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 43:59SPEAKER_02: But I I just but I didn't feel it through the rest of it.
- 44:01SPEAKER_01: But no, but there was there was definitely handheld like all the way through it.
- 44:04SPEAKER_01: Like, even like because you have like their their fights and stuff, and it's all it's definitely all handheld.
- 44:10SPEAKER_02: And I liked it, like, I mean, I could see the contrast, like when he walked into his apartment and was empty, you know, he was alone.
- 44:17SPEAKER_02: Then it was like there there was quiet, there was silence.
- 44:20SPEAKER_01: And I love I like that each time, like you know, you saw him go back in there, it was like, oh, he's got a coffee maker now.
- 44:28SPEAKER_01: Oh, he brought the armore over.
- 44:30SPEAKER_01: You didn't need to see him bring it over, it's just all of a sudden it's there.
- 44:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so he's just kind of yeah, making it his own.
- 44:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 44:36SPEAKER_02: But yeah, it's yeah.
- 44:37SPEAKER_01: So anyway, that's just I gotta remember I gotta definitely keep that in mind though, that that cinematography shows.
- 44:44SPEAKER_02: Well, I'd like to have somebody why do c why do people want to do stand-up show me, you know emotionally show me.
- 44:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 44:51SPEAKER_02: And that would have helped me a lot.
- 44:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 44:55SPEAKER_02: With all the comedians they were showing.
- 44:57SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 44:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 44:59SPEAKER_01: Oh, you could almost divide it up and have it be like you're following around one person like and doing like their stuff, and then it jumps to somebody else, and then it falls around that person for doing for doing their stuff.
- 45:17SPEAKER_01: Interesting.
- 45:18SPEAKER_01: Oh, so many ideas.
- 45:19SPEAKER_01: So many ideas.
- 45:20SPEAKER_02: All right, back to the movie.
- 45:22SPEAKER_02: Back to the movie, to this movie.
- 45:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, we don't rate movies.
- 45:26SPEAKER_02: I thought I'm kind of glad we don't do that.
- 45:28SPEAKER_01: You know, uh it's funny because somebody actually asked me that and it's like we're like, they were like, that's mean.
- 45:34SPEAKER_01: They're like, like, oh, where do where does this film rate for you guys of what you've seen?
- 45:38SPEAKER_02: And I was just like, and I'm like, no, we're not, we're we don't do we just yeah, just express ourselves in the moment, yeah.
- 45:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but and yeah, yeah, people can tell whether it's you know high or low.
- 45:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean if we if we connect with it, then we then we can we definitely that's just our personality connecting with it, you know.
- 45:57SPEAKER_02: It's not doesn't mean anything for the film itself, you know.
- 46:01SPEAKER_01: Or anybody else that could be watching it, they could have a completely different different feel for it.
- 46:06SPEAKER_02: This would be a good one for people to watch, so watch it and see what you think.
- 46:10SPEAKER_01: I think so too.
- 46:11SPEAKER_02: And it's like, yeah, because you don't, you know it's definitely got a style, you gotta like that style.
- 46:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 46:17SPEAKER_01: It definitely it definitely kept that style the whole way.
- 46:20SPEAKER_01: So all right, I guess.
- 46:22SPEAKER_01: Well, should we go ahead and wrap this one up?
- 46:23SPEAKER_02: I guess so.
- 46:25SPEAKER_01: Knew we'd have a lot to say about this one.
- 46:28SPEAKER_01: All right, thank you everybody for listening.
- 46:30SPEAKER_01: Uh, make sure you guys go check out Is This Thing On.
- 46:33SPEAKER_01: And until next time, I'm Barry.
- 46:34SPEAKER_02: And I'm Robin.
- 46:35SPEAKER_01: And we will talk to you guys later.
