- 0:012nd Corinthians chapter 8. Let us pray.
- 0:08God Almighty who reigns on high, we love you, Lord Jesus, for
- 0:12everything that you are and everything that you represent.
- 0:15God, we thank you for salvation. We thank you for waking us up
- 0:19this morning. We thank you God for breath.
- 0:22We thank you God for life. We thank you God for all of the
- 0:26many blessings that you're pouring out upon us.
- 0:28Lord, we bask in your beauty, we bask in your grace.
- 0:32God, we bask in your mercy. Lord, you're so good to us.
- 0:37And Lord, we are thankful and we praise your holy name.
- 0:43God, we have everything that we could ever need in you.
- 0:47And so Lord, we get out of our own way.
- 0:50And Lord, we give you center stage.
- 0:52Lord, come and get your glory. I get out of the way.
- 0:57And Father, I pray that you will be well pleased with the reading
- 1:01of your text today. I decrease as you increase, and
- 1:05it's all about you, King Jesus, our Lord and our Master and our
- 1:09God. Holy Spirit fill us today.
- 1:12Holy Spirit overflow into the communities.
- 1:16We love our Lord God with all of our heart and all of our mind
- 1:20and all of our strength. God, help us to love our
- 1:23neighbors as our self. Help us to go out into the
- 1:27harvest. Help us to go out into the
- 1:29highways and the hedges and the byways.
- 1:32Help us to snatch the firebrands, the burning sticks
- 1:35out of the fire. God, I pray that you'll clothe
- 1:39us in righteousness. Lord, let us stand upon truth.
- 1:43God, I pray that joy springs up God and love for our neighbors
- 1:47and love for you increases and abounds all the more.
- 1:50Father, I pray for kindness God and gentleness God, I pray for
- 1:58truth. Lord, I pray for our testimony
- 2:01to be talked about all everywhere that we go to all
- 2:05people. Father, I pray that we'll
- 2:08rightly divide the word today. God increase our faith.
- 2:12Father, let us run this race, the gospel shoes of peace.
- 2:16Lord, I pray for kindness and gentleness, for self-control.
- 2:21God, I pray in the name of Jesus that you'll continue to sanctify
- 2:26us as we consecrate this temple. Lord, it's all about you.
- 2:31Lord, we fix our mind upon everything that is holy and
- 2:35lovely and good and pure because you are worthy of all of our
- 2:39attention and adoration and affection.
- 2:42Father, it's all about you. So Holy Spirit, come and guide
- 2:46us and discipline us. Come and convince US and show us
- 2:51the gravity of the weight of God's glory.
- 2:56Let it encompass us all around. Overwhelm us with Your presence,
- 3:02Father, and help us to be the men and women who are marked by
- 3:12You. And let us be unashamed.
- 3:18Let us do away with the fear of man and cowardice.
- 3:23Let us be bold. And our witness today, we thank
- 3:28you, Father, for all that you do for us.
- 3:32And everything that we could ever do for you is just
- 3:36unprofitable servants. We are your bond servants.
- 3:40Father. This is a light affliction that
- 3:43you have called us into compared to what Christ has gone through
- 3:50and Lord with the reward for his suffering.
- 3:54God, we want to know Christ and Christ crucified.
- 3:58We want to know him and all of his sufferings.
- 4:00God, we thank you Lord Jesus for another day to come and worship
- 4:06you in spirit and truth. We love you.
- 4:08Father, give us this baptism of fire.
- 4:11Father God fill us today. Let us see the world all around
- 4:17us the way that you do. We love you God, we serve you
- 4:21Father, and it's in Jesus Christ holy and precious name.
- 4:25But I pray, Amen. Let's start in verse one.
- 4:33Moreover, brothers, we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed
- 4:39on the churches of Macedonia. So here Paul is wanting to take
- 4:44a collection up for the poor that are in Jerusalem.
- 4:47And Jerusalem is to be honored, friends.
- 4:50Even today, Jerusalem is to be honored.
- 4:52We pray for the peace of that literal geographical place on
- 4:56planet earth, Jerusalem, friends, That is where King
- 4:59Jesus is going to rule and reign from for 1000 years during the
- 5:03Millennium, friends. And so you need to understand
- 5:06that is why it's such a hotly contested place on planet earth.
- 5:10And you need to know that Paul here had a heart for the church
- 5:14there, and they owed so much to the Saints and the apostles that
- 5:20were in Jerusalem because that's where it all got started.
- 5:23The groundswell was all started there in Jerusalem.
- 5:27And that's where Jesus told the disciples to go back and to wait
- 5:31upon the baptism of the Holy Ghost there on the day of
- 5:36Pentecost, and they would receive power from on high.
- 5:39And that is what you need to understand is that Paul was
- 5:42desired to bless them because of how blessed the entire world had
- 5:48become because of their obedience unto Christ.
- 5:51Verse 2 how that in a great trial of affliction, the
- 5:56abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the
- 6:00riches of their liberality. So they were giving out of their
- 6:05poverty. And you remember the widows 2
- 6:08mites. You remember whenever she was in
- 6:11the temple and Jesus saw that she gave everything that she had
- 6:16friends and He was not even looking or caring about all of
- 6:20the noise that the other people were making with their Jingle
- 6:24and their jangle as they were putting the coins into the
- 6:27treasury, trying to make a big spectacle.
- 6:30And here comes this widow, and she drops all that she has to
- 6:34live on these two little pennies and Christ notices her.
- 6:39And here we are 2000 years later and we're still talking about
- 6:44the widow's mite. And so that is what you need to
- 6:46understand is that God sees whenever we give all that we
- 6:51have to live on. He sees whenever we are giving
- 6:54liberally, whenever we are giving hilariously friends,
- 6:59whenever it doesn't make sense in the systems of the world.
- 7:03But we do it because we give to God.
- 7:05We do not give to man. We are storing up treasures for
- 7:08ourselves in heaven where moth does not destroy and rust does
- 7:12not destroy, and the thieves do not break in and steal.
- 7:17You need to understand you can't take any of this with you, but
- 7:22you sure can send it ahead. And don't be like the fool who
- 7:26built an extra barn to store all of his hay in and his very life
- 7:31was demanded from him that night and he never got to finish the
- 7:35task. He should have been open handed.
- 7:37And the better thing to do when it's in concern to giving is not
- 7:41just move a decimal to understand the tide, but you
- 7:45need to be asking God what it is that He would have you to give.
- 7:50Go to God. And it takes great faith to know
- 7:53that we have heard from God and that we're moving in obedience.
- 7:56And the 10% is just a benchmark. It's a great place to start.
- 8:01But it is not the law in the sense that we're bound to the
- 8:06tides. We can give much more.
- 8:09Friends 342 their power. I bear record.
- 8:15Yeah, and beyond their power, they were willing of themselves.
- 8:19So here we can see that the churches in Macedonia, they were
- 8:26hilarious with their giving. They had lack, but they didn't
- 8:30see it that way. They saw that they could send
- 8:32their treasures ahead and by giving to the church in
- 8:36Jerusalem, they would be blessed eternally and they would have
- 8:40the peace of God reigning on their house and the provision of
- 8:44God. And that is where we we need to
- 8:46get to friends, where we're not relying on money, we're not
- 8:50relying on our bank accounts, we're not relying on the 401K in
- 8:54the retirement, we're not relying upon all of the systems
- 8:59of the world, but we rely on God for the very next breath that
- 9:02we're going to breathe. And if you are someone who is
- 9:06called into stewarding money, that is none of it is yours.
- 9:09It all belongs to God and he has just entrusted it to you.
- 9:13And we need to understand that all of the riches in all of the
- 9:18world, for all time's sake, all belong to God Almighty.
- 9:23He's the one that put the oar in the earth that we place the
- 9:27value of our currency upon. Just think about it, friends.
- 9:31We need God and God alone to provide for us the very next
- 9:35breath in our lungs, our very next heartbeat, friends.
- 9:39And what does it profit a man to gain the entire world to be the
- 9:43richest man in the world? And to lose his soul and for his
- 9:49soul to be cast into hell, it profits him nothing, friends.
- 9:52And that is what you need to understand.
- 9:55A content man that has God is much more wealthier than any man
- 9:59who is discontent and has all the abundance that this world
- 10:04could ever offer. Just remember that you can be
- 10:07the wealthiest man in the room and your bank account could be
- 10:11at 0. And that is because those that
- 10:14are acquiring much wealth and those that are stuck in
- 10:18materialism, it's never enough. And so that is where
- 10:22discontentment comes in. And that comparison is a great
- 10:27thief of our joy. And so if you want to have joy
- 10:30in your life, be content with what you have and watch God grow
- 10:34it, friends. And He is going to change you.
- 10:37He might not even ever change the external, but He'll change
- 10:41what's happening inside of you. And you can see the entire earth
- 10:44and all the world as gods. And there is no lack in the
- 10:48Father's house, and he has the cattle on 1000 hills.
- 10:52And so when you come to God, all the resources and the wealth and
- 10:55the riches that God possesses become your inheritance friends,
- 11:00and not just for later, but for the here and the now.
- 11:03And you will see that come to fruition in your life if you
- 11:06will stiff arm all of the greed and all of the love of money and
- 11:12the love of mammon. Friends, we don't just give to
- 11:15God to get. We give to God because He gave
- 11:19first. He is the greatest gift giver
- 11:22that there ever was, when He gave His only begotten Son, so
- 11:25that you and I can inherit eternal life.
- 11:30For praying us with much entreaty that we would receive
- 11:37the gift and take upon us the fellowship of the ministering to
- 11:42the Saints. So Paul is desirous to take up a
- 11:46collection and then he's going to have Titus and an unspoken
- 11:50brother to take it there. And he's saying that they are on
- 11:54the up and up and everything is financially accountable.
- 11:57And you can check the the Ledger and the balances and everything
- 12:02adds up, friends. And Paul's not in it for the
- 12:05money. And you can see that Paul was a
- 12:08tent maker in the sense that he provided his for his own needs.
- 12:13He did not want to be a burden. So you can see that he's not
- 12:16asking for money. And a lot of times churches get
- 12:20a bad rap because you might attend and all they ever talk
- 12:23about is money, friends. But just know, we do not give to
- 12:27man, we give to God. Five.
- 12:31And this they did not as we hoped, but first gave their own
- 12:36selves to the Lord and unto us by the will of God.
- 12:39So even more important than a collection of money is that we
- 12:44need to commit our whole selves and our whole life over to God.
- 12:48And then we need to find the shepherds that we look up to who
- 12:55are not acting in a simple way, and we need to commit ourselves
- 13:03over to them. If they are following after the
- 13:06Lord, we will have no problem with following after them.
- 13:09Find somebody in your life that can disciple you.
- 13:13Friends, no man is an island. There are many who have gone
- 13:17before us who have paved the way and have given us the
- 13:21opportunity to step in to the knowledge of the Lord Jesus
- 13:28Christ because of the lives that they lived, friends, and you can
- 13:33see it, the groundwork all being laid within the early church and
- 13:38it's all built upon the chief cornerstone.
- 13:41But we do not need to try to think that we somehow do not
- 13:46need a person to disciple us. And so they have given
- 13:51themselves over to the Lord. They have given themselves over
- 13:55to discipline. And now he's saying discipline
- 13:58yourself with your finances. 6IN so much that we desired Titus,
- 14:05that as he he had begun, so he would also finish in you the
- 14:10same grace also. So there was a riff between the
- 14:13Corinthian church and Paul when he wrote him the 1st letter and
- 14:17he had written to him a hard letter.
- 14:20And here he's saying, before the riff, y'all had all decided that
- 14:26you wanted to give something to the church in Jerusalem, so let
- 14:31it be so. I've already told them that
- 14:34you're preparing a gift and to your shame, do not let it go by
- 14:39the wayside just because there was a rift between Paul and the
- 14:43Corinthians. He did not want them to be
- 14:46looked down upon by the church in Jerusalem because He had
- 14:50promised that they were getting together this gift.
- 14:56He's telling them to finish in that grace.
- 14:59And it is the grace of God that allows us to even have a heart
- 15:03of giving. Friends, the carnal natural
- 15:07response is to hoard it up. The carnal natural response is
- 15:13to just do you, to take care of you and yours.
- 15:18But it is the grace of God that gives us a heart for giving,
- 15:21because He is the greatest giver.
- 15:24And when we have the heart of God, it is a natural overflow to
- 15:29want to give. 7 Therefore as you abound in everything, in faith
- 15:35and utterance and knowledge and all diligence, and in your love
- 15:40to us, see that you abound in this grace also.
- 15:44It is amazing that the giving of the finances is considered
- 15:48grace, and you can see here that these are the attributes of
- 15:55Christ. This is how Christ's example
- 15:58was. He wanted us to abound in our
- 16:00faith. He wanted to abound in
- 16:02everything in our speech, and in our knowledge and diligence and
- 16:07love, and also in our giving. 8 I speak not by commandment, but
- 16:16by occasion of the forwardness of others and to prove the
- 16:22sincerity of your love. So you can see when a person is
- 16:28completely sold out to the Lord Jesus Christ, it will result in
- 16:34a spirit of giving. If you find somebody who is
- 16:40greedy, that is a probable indicator that they are not
- 16:47filled with the Holy Ghost, and you can see it in their
- 16:51sincerity. For the love of the outpouring
- 16:56of giving, you can gauge where somebody is at through the
- 17:01giving that they have. 9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus
- 17:09Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became
- 17:14poor, that you through his poverty might be rich.
- 17:19So think about it, friends, Jesus Christ left his eternal
- 17:25abode of all the riches and the glory of heaven to step down
- 17:32into earth, to become a little baby and to put on humanity,
- 17:37friends, and to become impoverished.
- 17:41And we know that foxes have holes and birds have nests.
- 17:44But the Son of Man had nowhere to lay his head, friends.
- 17:48And so you can see that it was through him choosing to come in
- 17:53this impoverished state that we inherited eternal life and that
- 18:01all the riches available to him are available to us.
- 18:08And that is the amazing fact is that Jesus could have came in an
- 18:14in a palace. He could have came in robes of
- 18:18splendor. He could have came as a
- 18:21authoritarian. He could have came as the
- 18:24richest person on planet earth who never had lack.
- 18:28But because he wanted to get level with the gravel and he
- 18:31wanted us to be able to come to him in ways that we understand,
- 18:36he chose to come and to be in poverty for our richness
- 18:46friends. And now we can see just how rich
- 18:50we are in Christ. 10 And herein I give my advice, for this is
- 18:56expedient for you who have begun before, not only to do, but also
- 19:01to be forward. A year ago.
- 19:03So a year ago they had all decided as the Corinthian church
- 19:07that they would put together a blessing for the church there in
- 19:12Jerusalem. And Paul is saying now make good
- 19:16on your promise. 11 now therefore perform the doing of
- 19:22it that as there was a readiness to will, so there may be a
- 19:27performance also out of that which you have.
- 19:30So we can't just go around and verbally blessing people and
- 19:34telling them to stay warm and well fed.
- 19:37We actually have to put some practicality to our faith
- 19:40friends. We actually have to do
- 19:43something. And no, we're not saved by
- 19:46works, but our works revealed our faith, friends, and that is
- 19:52what Paul is referencing here. 12 For if there be first a
- 20:02willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man has, and
- 20:07not according to that he has not.
- 20:09So God knows our financial situation and He's not asking
- 20:16us. To go into poverty so that
- 20:19someone else can be rich and to be wealthy and to have all of
- 20:24the nice things in this life. And that is why it's so
- 20:28important to go to God before you ever give.
- 20:32And you need to ask God what He would have for you to do,
- 20:37friends. And God will reveal to you what
- 20:40it is that His heart is moving you towards.
- 20:45And we don't need to just move the decimal so that others can
- 20:49be in fine luxury. And we are stuck in the
- 20:58impoverished state. And God provides for our needs,
- 21:03not always for our wants. And that is what you need to
- 21:06understand is that He is going to take care of all your needs.
- 21:12And it is with food and clothing that we need to be content.
- 21:16And godliness with contentment is great gain.
- 21:19And the pride of life is not from God.
- 21:22And we should not just always be looking for the luxurious
- 21:27things. We need to be humble and content
- 21:33with food and with clothing. And God will provide those
- 21:37things for you. 13 for I mean not that other men be eased and
- 21:48you burdened. That's the whole point friends.
- 21:52We should not just be easing up on others lives while we
- 21:59ourselves are in lack 14 but by an equality that now at this
- 22:07time your abundance may be a supply for their want, that
- 22:12their abundance also may be a supply for your want, that there
- 22:16may be equality. So this is not communism in the
- 22:22sense of forcing others to share at the expense of being forced
- 22:32into it. That is not God's heart.
- 22:35It is a choice. We choose to give.
- 22:40We choose it. It is not by force.
- 22:44And that is what you need to understand all of the utopian
- 22:49ideas of some kind of society, this Robin Hood society, It
- 22:56would never work. It has to be a choice and it
- 22:59comes from understanding our position with Christ.
- 23:03And it's easy to give when you see how Christ has given to us.
- 23:08And that is what Paul wants them to know is that we don't give so
- 23:12that others can just continuously amass for
- 23:16themselves. And if you have that in your
- 23:19mind, then you will be just fine.
- 23:23And we should not just be looking for the smallest amount
- 23:26to give that's going to please God.
- 23:30You've already lost it. If that is your mindset.
- 23:33If you're just trying to get God in your favor, then you've
- 23:40already lost his favor. Because our hearts should be
- 23:45positioned in ways that we rely on God to direct us in our
- 23:50finances. And the spirit of mammon is a
- 23:53real thing. And there are many people who
- 23:56call themselves believers, but they have the love of money,
- 24:00which is the root of all kinds of evil. 15 As it is written, he
- 24:10that has gathered much had nothing over, and he that
- 24:14gathered little had no lack. That is the principle that God
- 24:18wants us to understand. We don't need to hoard it up for
- 24:22ourselves, and we don't need to hold it back from those that are
- 24:26in need. And if we will be in tune with
- 24:30God, anytime He blesses us with abundance, it will be to bless
- 24:35others. There is no lack in the Father's
- 24:39house. 16 But thanks be to God which put the same earnest care
- 24:45into the heart of Titus for you. 17 For indeed he accepted the
- 24:52exhortation, but being more forward of his own accord, he
- 24:56went unto you. 18 And we have sent with him the brother whose
- 25:02praise is in the gospel throughout all the churches.
- 25:07So you need to understand that Titus and this unnamed brother
- 25:13were coming to gather the offering that the Corinthians
- 25:18had put together. 19 And not that only, but who was also
- 25:27chosen of the churches to travel with us with this grace which is
- 25:31administered by us to the glory of the same Lord and declaration
- 25:37of your ready mind. So he's saying get it ready for
- 25:41us so that we do not have to beg or try to put on some kind of
- 25:45fundraising campaign when we get there.
- 25:49That we can move on to much more higher spiritual planes than to
- 25:56be there haggling and trying to collect for something that
- 26:01you've already said in your heart that you wanted to do.
- 26:04And we have already told them that it is coming 20 avoiding
- 26:09this, that no man should blame us in the abundance which is
- 26:14administered by US, 21 providing for honest things, not only in
- 26:19the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men. 22 And we
- 26:24have sent with them our brother, whom we have often times proved
- 26:29diligent in many things, but now much more diligent upon the
- 26:33great confidence which I have in you.
- 26:36So that is what you need to understand when it comes to
- 26:39financial stewardship. We need to be honest in all of
- 26:43our dealings, not only in the sight of God, but also in the
- 26:48sight of men. We need to make sure we're
- 26:51diligent in all things. 23 Whether any do inquire of Titus,
- 26:58he is my partner and fellow helper concerning you or our
- 27:02brothers being inquired of. They are the messengers of the
- 27:06churches and the glory of Christ.
- 27:10So we can see here that Paul is putting his stamp of approval on
- 27:14Titus and this other unnamed brother and he's saying you can
- 27:19trust them. We'll end on 24.
- 27:22Wherefore show you to them and before the churches the proof of
- 27:26your love and of our boasting on your behalf.
- 27:30So you can prove your love by your giving.
- 27:33And it is going to be a natural overflow.
- 27:38You will not hoard up for yourselves.
- 27:40It is much better to give than to receive.
- 27:43And I pray that you have experienced that phenomenon and
- 27:47you cannot out give God hope. You've been blessed by this
- 27:54amazing chapter. I know I sure have.
- 27:57I'm praying for every single one of you.
- 28:04I love you. So does God.
- 28:09Stay prayed up today. Put on the full armor and
- 28:14withstand the fiery darts of our enemy who is relentless, but we
- 28:21can withstand him and have him to flee from us for a time.
- 28:28God bless you.
