Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: This country's fines make no sense
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: This country's fines you've probably noticed this make very little sense.
- 0:03Speaker 1: You can get seventy bucks for parking for a few
- 0:06Speaker 1: minutes over in the wrong spot in a CBD area,
- 0:09Speaker 1: one hundred and fifty dollars for driving in a bus lane,
- 0:12Speaker 1: which is a massive really, that's a big fine by comparison,
- 0:16Speaker 1: and that is the exact same amount you can get
- 0:18Speaker 1: for texting while driving, an act which could, in theory
- 0:21Speaker 1: distract you enough to kill somebody on the road. So
- 0:24Speaker 1: that kind of makes no sense. So what gives you
- 0:27Speaker 1: can get thirty bucks for going a few k's over
- 0:29Speaker 1: one hundred on a main road. Anyone who's been to Australia,
- 0:32Speaker 1: those things are very different. They're way harsher. People generally
- 0:35Speaker 1: follow the rules of the road as a result. You
- 0:38Speaker 1: might have seen that if you're driven over an OZ,
- 0:41Speaker 1: but that doesn't mean that no one's crashing there and
- 0:44Speaker 1: no one's dying on their roads either, does it. The
- 0:46Speaker 1: problem is revenue gathering. As you well know, if you
- 0:49Speaker 1: actually set the fines based on the potential damage that
- 0:53Speaker 1: an action may cause, we'd have a totally different system
- 0:56Speaker 1: and set of punishments. But you would also have councils
- 1:00Speaker 1: and cops who take the mickey and go revenue grab
- 1:04Speaker 1: speeding cameras in areas where no one's seen a crash
- 1:06Speaker 1: in decades. That kind of thing. That's basically why we
- 1:10Speaker 1: are where we are. There is one change, though, that
- 1:13Speaker 1: I think we can make one that I support, wait
- 1:16Speaker 1: for it, free parking for those over the age of eighty,
- 1:21Speaker 1: get rid of the parking charges all together. Therefore get
- 1:25Speaker 1: rid of the fines for them. Gore already does this. Congratulations, Gore,
- 1:29Speaker 1: welcome to the party. Or Amadu is looking at doing
- 1:33Speaker 1: this at the moment. They've got new parking meters installed
- 1:36Speaker 1: in town. You see happen in December, and apparently this is,
- 1:39Speaker 1: according to age concern making the elderly very anxious because
- 1:44Speaker 1: they're digital. So you get two hours free, but then
- 1:47Speaker 1: you have to enter your details of your car for
- 1:49Speaker 1: a third hour. And they're very anxious about doing this
- 1:53Speaker 1: in a digital way, and so they say the fear
- 1:57Speaker 1: of getting a seventy dollars ticket is so much so
- 2:00Speaker 1: great that they just don't go into town. I mean,
- 2:03Speaker 1: isn't that that's seriously said? I think a massive setback
- 2:07Speaker 1: for an older person. You're not going in there chatting
- 2:09Speaker 1: to people in the mall, to the shop owners, to
- 2:11Speaker 1: the cafe owners. It's less socializing, less practical, losing your
- 2:15Speaker 1: independence for fear of a fine. I think it's unfair.
- 2:18Speaker 1: If you've made it to eighty, you deserve to go
- 2:21Speaker 1: to town in your own car without being worried of half
- 2:25Speaker 1: your pension flying out the window and fines. For more
- 2:30Speaker 1: from Early Edition with Ryan Bridge. Listen live to news Talks.
- 2:33Speaker 1: It'd be from five am weekdays, or follow the podcast
- 2:37Speaker 1: on iHeartRadio.
