- 1:21Our second annual Rockin Revs Automotive Festival happening here
- 1:25in Fairview Park, Ohio on July 27th.
- 1:27This event is put together to help raise money for two near
- 1:31and dear things to my heart.
- 1:32One is ACBC, known as Aluminum Cans for Burned Children.
- 1:36Who raised money to support pediatric burn survivors and send them some
- 1:40camps a couple of times a year and anything that may require at their
- 1:43home, but also the Island Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary in Marblehead, Ohio.
- 1:46To Nancy and her team up there that take in all the older dogs and dogs with
- 1:50medical needs and whatnot that are usually very difficult to kind of get adopted out.
- 1:53They tackle them head on and give these beautiful, beautiful animals
- 1:57a nice warm place to stay and live to hopefully get adopted out.
- 2:01But if not, she keeps them.
- 2:02So anyways, onto our topic.
- 2:04Month of March is Women's History Month.
- 2:07So what we're going to delve into Laura Ferrari.
- 2:10Yes.
- 2:11Enzo's wife, the enigmatic lady behind the man that created probably the
- 2:17most famous car brand known to man.
- 2:19A lot of this stuff is going to come from just what you can find
- 2:23in Witchcreed, which is not a lot.
- 2:25And if you kind of referenced the Michael Mann movie from a few years ago, you
- 2:28know, a lot of the stuff they try to do for Penelope Cruz to portray her, they
- 2:32had a very, very difficult time trying to get the truth, get the story, get the
- 2:37history, kind of get anything on her.
- 2:39Because, well, I wouldn't say very close to the vest, but there really
- 2:41wasn't much written about her.
- 2:42Back then was such a different time.
- 2:44You're talking early 1900s of all the way up to the 1970s when she
- 2:48passed, especially in Italy and Italian heritage, who my producer
- 2:53Eric should be familiar with, is back then it was very, very different
- 2:57times in regards to having a wife, a mistress, girlfriend, what have you.
- 3:02It was common and it was not, I want to say frowned upon maybe, but kind
- 3:07of just, all right, it's accepted.
- 3:09Very different times in very different ways things were done.
- 3:12But again, also back then women were never viewed as equals of men, which is a sad,
- 3:17sad situation, but it was just how things were done and how people were brought up.
- 3:22And this day and age, we still have a long way to go.
- 3:24But back then it was horrific.
- 3:26Some of the stuff here is just baffling to me.
- 3:28But anyways, we're going to talk about Laura.
- 3:31I'm going to give what I can give, what I'd be able to dig up.
- 3:33This is just my viewpoint.
- 3:35Now Enzo and Laura met 1920, 1921, somewhere around in that era.
- 3:40They Supposedly met at a train station, but other hearsay, other stuff,
- 3:45you know, she was actually a go go dancer at a, um, I don't want to say
- 3:49discotheque, but you know, nightclub, whatever you want to call it back then.
- 3:52An Enzo dashing racing driver, racing alpha males, this kind of stuff.
- 3:57So, you know, he had that charisma of the genesis.
- 4:01Allure, I guess you could say, you know, women get drawn to.
- 4:04So they had met and again, either at the train station or whatnot,
- 4:08but they actually, I want to say had a whirlwind romance.
- 4:11But from my understanding is, you know, they jumped into bed pretty
- 4:14quickly and started basically having, you know, obviously romantic
- 4:17relationship from the get go.
- 4:19Again, back then, especially in Italy and how.
- 4:22strong the catholic faith is in that country.
- 4:26Having sex before marriage was a big no no.
- 4:29They always wanted, oh you marry a virgin, that kind of stupid shit.
- 4:32So, they kind of kept it hush hush.
- 4:34But what's interesting for image wise, Enzo Referred to her very
- 4:39early in the relationship as Laura Ferrari as his wife, basically,
- 4:43because the circles he was going in.
- 4:46And again, this is just that weird dynamic and the way things were done back then
- 4:49him being a single guy and whatnot with the girlfriend was not viewed very good.
- 4:54They kind of, I don't want to say shun their nose at her, but that they, I don't
- 4:56know if it was immaturity or whatnot, or just weird because, you know, this
- 4:59is someone in their early twenties, this day and age, you look at someone
- 5:02that's married in the early twenties, like what the hell's wrong with you?
- 5:04Did you marry high school sweetheart?
- 5:05I mean, you don't get married that young, that early, so frequently anymore.
- 5:09It's just not as common.
- 5:10But back then, got married in 1819, you know, you bam, right out of the thing.
- 5:13And I think that had to do with the fact is, you know, you married
- 5:17the first girl and you had at it.
- 5:18But anyways, He came out of the gate pretty early within the first
- 5:22year or something like that and correspondence or something like that
- 5:24was stating the fact and referring to her as Laura Ferrari as his wife.
- 5:29So he would be received more favorably.
- 5:32Being a racing car driver, obviously you're running around people with
- 5:35money, you know, royalty with clout.
- 5:37Obviously perception is key.
- 5:39So he wanted to be perceived, you know, as a man that I have a
- 5:42wife, I'm a stable guy, you know, I got a good head on my shoulders.
- 5:45So he started referring to her that way.
- 5:47In the early days, everything was hunky dory, everything's good.
- 5:51Laura was a very outgoing person, you know, very charismatic from my
- 5:55understanding, from what I could see.
- 5:57She attended, went to all the races, went to them, everything like that.
- 6:00Even after they got married, she attended a lot of the races.
- 6:03Within the first year or two, but then after they got married,
- 6:05it kind of started waning.
- 6:07She started spending a lot more time, you want to say vacationing, but she was more
- 6:11on, you know, a wellness situation, going up into the hills of the Italian River
- 6:15areas and getting the better air, going to stay at her sister's and stuff like that.
- 6:19So you have a period of time in there after their marriage in the first
- 6:23few years where things started waning in regards to that relationship,
- 6:28partnership, and it got to the point.
- 6:30Where supposedly Enzo had sent her a, basically a letter that is either
- 6:35you come home or no, we're done.
- 6:37So he just kind of got fed up with it.
- 6:39I think the image part of it was, may have been the situation
- 6:41may have been as a problem.
- 6:43He's married, but okay, where's your wife?
- 6:45Well, she's hundreds of miles away in the Riviera to Snatton.
- 6:48In this time that this is happening, his company's going to shit.
- 6:51And him trying to build what he was trying to build wasn't coming together.
- 6:56Just wasn't working out his racing career, everything like that.
- 6:58He was a good racer, that's for sure, but gave her an ultimatum.
- 7:01So all of a sudden she comes back and she comes back to a situation where
- 7:05everything's kind of the finances and stuff are all kind of in disarray.
- 7:08And as we all know Enzo's story, then he goes on to start looking over
- 7:12the Alfa Romeo race team to snap.
- 7:14But again, Laura's nowhere to be found.
- 7:16She hasn't come to races.
- 7:17She come to.
- 7:18If you're here and there, she was in the one photo of Scuderia Ferrari's
- 7:23first victory and that stuff.
- 7:24So she was in that photo.
- 7:25So she still traveled a bit, but just not quite as frequently
- 7:28as she used to in the past.
- 7:29Now, this is when after 12 years of marriage and all this turbulent
- 7:33times or anything like that, they have a son, Dino Alfredo.
- 7:37So, we all know Dino died at a very young age, and basically it was from
- 7:41muscular dystrophy, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, I guess you get more specific.
- 7:45And the one thing about it is Enzo found out, or back in the time, and
- 7:51I don't know, I'm not a doctor, so I don't know how true this is or what
- 7:53not, but this is passed on to a child from a chromosome from the mother.
- 7:58So Enzo basically blamed her for Dino's death.
- 8:01So many years later from this horrible disease, obviously things got that much
- 8:06more strenuous after the passing of Dino.
- 8:09But here's the one other side of this, not long after them getting,
- 8:14honestly not getting married, but I'm going to say in the early 30s.
- 8:17Before Dino was born, Lena Lardy came into Enzo's life.
- 8:22So this is an interesting dynamic because again, how I stated
- 8:25earlier was back then in that day.
- 8:28It wasn't, I don't want to say final, maybe it was final, but it was like,
- 8:31it was accepted that you had a wife, you had a mistress, plain and simple.
- 8:34So I mean, I guess this is how it was back then.
- 8:36Kept hot shots, she really didn't know about Lena until many years
- 8:40later, but this is when Enzo started to have, I want to say a double life.
- 8:44Spending time with her and splitting all his time, so I mean, I don't
- 8:46honestly, I don't know how he did it.
- 8:47It's not like this day and age where you got cell phones, all this kind of
- 8:50stuff, and All these guys, you're talking about a time when, you know, you had to
- 8:53drive and all this stuff and it's, it's unbelievable how he was, you know, did it.
- 8:57But anyways, we're jumping, not doing the early stuff.
- 9:00We're going to get into the meat of stuff in regards to where Laura's story is
- 9:04more prominent in the history of Ferrari.
- 9:07Ferrari's up and going by the time Dino's 24 when he passes.
- 9:11Ferrari itself is embedded in the racing world and, you know, they're
- 9:15starting to make their, uh, production road cars to support the racing.
- 9:18You know, getting into this fact is, well, After Dino passes,
- 9:22there's always this head biting.
- 9:23Laura, after a bit of mourning, everything like that, all of a
- 9:27sudden she becomes very, very involved with the running of Ferrari.
- 9:33She gets into more of the financial side of things, looking at the books, looking
- 9:38at expenses, everything like that.
- 9:39And all of a sudden, She starts going to all the races now mind you Enzo as
- 9:44he got in the things He stopped going to races unless it was in Italy within a few
- 9:49hours or what have you he would go But anything else of that he would get phone
- 9:52calls from the team managers They would pass along the results the information
- 9:56to him to telephone telegraph what have you, but Laura Would go and this is where
- 10:01this kind of becomes an odd situation.
- 10:04Is she reporting back to him?
- 10:05Whatnot people don't know, but she's all of a sudden going thing.
- 10:07You see her in photos, everything like that, but she's more prominent within the
- 10:11running of Ferrari itself and looking over the finances to be sure dollars aren't
- 10:15getting spent, whether it's supposed to that kind of thing, which needs to
- 10:17be done, you can't just run haphazardly and, you know, stay in business.
- 10:20So.
- 10:21That side of it, I think her taking that over, I think is brilliant because I think
- 10:25it actually, to an extent, saved Ferrari from probably going under and going
- 10:30bankrupt or broke in the early years where they would never even gotten to the point
- 10:34where Fiat would have came in and saved them or all that stuff playing that little
- 10:37game with Ford and everything like that.
- 10:38So I think that's kind of a very, very, I don't want to say underrated.
- 10:42I don't think people talk about it enough and saying, you know, this.
- 10:45Woman came in and started going over the books started mining expenses started
- 10:49going to the races are like that and watching what people were Doing in regards
- 10:52to what money they were spending what expenditure like every dollar counts
- 10:56So I think that was a very I would say brilliant move But I think it was a very
- 11:01pragmatic move in regards to the history of Ferrari and keeping the doors open and
- 11:05getting where they Are today at this point in time by some things are happening.
- 11:09Enzo's got his girlfriend Lena Piero was born.
- 11:12We'll get into that a little bit more with how Laura handled that.
- 11:14And again, it's just a weird dynamic and the times back then were completely
- 11:18different in how the thoughts were and you don't know how someone was thinking.
- 11:21You don't, can't get in someone's brain.
- 11:23But in 1961, they had the Palace Revolt because there's All these
- 11:27engineers and managers were getting upset and pissed off.
- 11:31They felt, and again, this is probably the male ego involved saying
- 11:34a woman shouldn't be on the floor.
- 11:35A woman shouldn't be telling us what to do, dah, dah, dah, this and that.
- 11:38Cause she was getting into everything, coming on the floor, getting a thing and
- 11:41probably minding the P's and Q's of the finances, trying to find out what's going
- 11:45on and hey, my husband owns a company.
- 11:48I own the company too as well.
- 11:49Then you listen to what I do.
- 11:50And headstrong Italian men probably didn't take kindly to that.
- 11:54So they basically.
- 11:55So a lawyer net, they go to Enzo and say, she's got to go.
- 11:59It's either her or us.
- 12:00Well, guess what?
- 12:00They went, which there were some very, very prominent people that left the
- 12:05company on that day, but then also elevated Ferrari because of for Gary
- 12:10came on board, you know, was there and very young was early twenties and he
- 12:14gets elevated to the team manager, all this stuff and everything happened.
- 12:17It seemed, you know, Hey, it all worked out, obviously.
- 12:20Enzo Bacchus and he kicked them out.
- 12:22So even though all those problems were there that head butting everything like
- 12:26that He still stood by and I'm supporting my wife, which was awesome to see, you
- 12:30know, so everyone leaves So there's a big swift times change whatnot They
- 12:34had the next couple years in the racing department that did not go very well
- 12:38because I want to say starting from scratch But basically is because you
- 12:41know, you have that core that's working.
- 12:42I think they all leave.
- 12:43Okay, you guys start over So for the next two seasons They didn't do too good.
- 12:47Obviously, they came roaring back.
- 12:48We know what happened after that.
- 12:50They just dominated F1.
- 12:52They dominated endurance racing, everything, everything
- 12:54and everything under the sun.
- 12:56Taking lemons, making lemonade, I guess you say.
- 12:57So that was kind of an interesting little dynamic, even though, and
- 13:02I don't want to say animosity, but I want to say, you know, just the
- 13:04friction between Enzo and Laura.
- 13:06Going on, he still stood behind her.
- 13:08And up until 1970 in Italy, you couldn't get divorced anyways because
- 13:13the Catholic Church wouldn't allow it because you had to go to the church
- 13:15to get permission to get divorced.
- 13:16So unless there was some really strenuous circumstances that would justify, you
- 13:21weren't getting divorced back then.
- 13:22It wasn't happening.
- 13:23I guess maybe that goes back to things, hey, you could have a mistress,
- 13:25whatnot, but hey, you kept the family together, everything like that.
- 13:28So in this time, then all of a sudden, Laura finds out about Lena.
- 13:32Lardy, Enzo's mistress.
- 13:34And Piero!
- 13:35Watching the Ferrari movie, you probably saw all this stuff about
- 13:37her hunting her down or anything.
- 13:39Now, a lot of that's relatively true in regards to her laying
- 13:43down the law and fighting it.
- 13:44But one of the big things that came out of that is says, Piero will not take your
- 13:48last name, Enzo, until after I'm dead.
- 13:50He was always Pyrrha, now in the movie they say it somehow is true because
- 13:53Lena Lardy, she kept everything close to the chest and she wouldn't
- 13:56divulge much and kudos to her.
- 13:58Now hey, it's no one's business, it's her business, between her and Enzo.
- 14:02But after obviously the Lord died in 1978, Piero took the last name Ferrari, and
- 14:07there you go, as Enzo's only surviving son, who's still alive today, and he's
- 14:10got his own kids, and one of them is named Enzo, I think, going to school
- 14:14in California, something like that, so, the legacy lives on, and I think
- 14:16he owns 5%, 10 percent of the car, I don't know, he's got a nice chunk of it,
- 14:21where, you know, he's, Obviously having that last name he's, he's enjoying life.
- 14:24All this is going on and Lena does not live all that far.
- 14:28She lives in Modena and the fact is she's not living all that far from
- 14:31where Laura and them are living.
- 14:34It's not like she's on the other side of the country or other side
- 14:36of the world or anything like that.
- 14:37Obviously back then you're not following someone on Instagram
- 14:40or Facebook stalking them.
- 14:41Enzo put them up in a nice little house, you know, Laura and them,
- 14:44they were living in this apartment.
- 14:46Again, it's something you try and wrap your head around now.
- 14:48You're just like, how is that possible?
- 14:50How can you, you know, it's like, there's just no way.
- 14:52I mean, you hear stories and stuff all the time.
- 14:53And you know, he had a second family, all this stuff.
- 14:55But back then it was, oh, that's his mistress.
- 14:57Oh, this and that, you know, it was just basically, oh, that's what that is.
- 14:59So anyways, you know, she just put it to him after the fact.
- 15:02And she got involved with Ferrari, which I believe her involvement.
- 15:07I want to say save the company.
- 15:09Now, I know in the movie they kind of said, Oh, she had half the shares and then
- 15:12she needed to give some back to him and she wanted a half a million dollars, dah,
- 15:15dah, dah, about the timeframes were off and whatnot, and it's basically not true.
- 15:19Obviously that thing for the story, for the movie, you got to build something up.
- 15:22That wasn't true, but she did have the ownership in the company, but having
- 15:25that half the shares and all this stuff and holding it over Enzo's head, as
- 15:28far as anyone knows, and as far as I know, I could find that wasn't true.
- 15:32She was a very prominent figure with Ferrari.
- 15:35And I honestly think her role in the story of Ferrari itself, the company
- 15:40needs to be, I want to say more prominent in regards to what her roles
- 15:44and what she did and how much she actually contributed to the company.
- 15:48Cause again, I think when she stepped in and started doing
- 15:50the finances and everything like that, that wasn't Enzo's forte.
- 15:53His thing was corralling good people, getting them to do
- 15:55what he wanted them to do.
- 15:56And he was a leader, got the right people, put them in the right positions and
- 16:00just cracked the whip, going like that.
- 16:01Accounting wasn't his thing of doing finance, but you know, Laura,
- 16:04she stepped in and I honestly believe, I think she saved the
- 16:07company, kept it from going under.
- 16:09Probably had a huge part in that.
- 16:11Yes, he built great road cars for that, but you got to remember they weren't
- 16:14building all that many cars back then.
- 16:16So it wasn't like they're cranking out tens of thousands of cars a year and
- 16:19say, Oh, we got all this money coming in.
- 16:20It was a tight thing.
- 16:22And the amount of race cars and racing they're doing, I mean, you got to go
- 16:25to shipping, all this kind of stuff.
- 16:26I mean, there's a lot of costs involved in that.
- 16:28So it's like.
- 16:29You got to get money for someone or whatnot.
- 16:31So you got to mind your P's and Q's.
- 16:32So I believe she needs to be recognized more in regards to the story of Ferrari
- 16:38itself, the company and stepping in.
- 16:41And again, a lot of this stuff you read about is, I would say hearsay, but
- 16:46it's from stories from other people.
- 16:47Everyone's, Oh, it's this or that.
- 16:49Some of the stuff you can figure out like Laura and Enzo's mother.
- 16:52He didn't get along, but.
- 16:54How common is that, that the daughter in law doesn't, doesn't get along with
- 16:58their mother in law and especially back then because the hierarchy was and
- 17:03everything like that, your mother was God, so to speak, you know, it's just
- 17:06commonplace, but you hear those stories and I just think she's always been put
- 17:10in a negative light wrongly, what she put up with, what she had to deal with.
- 17:16Enzo was a difficult, difficult man, ego, whatnot.
- 17:20I mean, just, For what she had to do and what she had to tolerate, a mistress.
- 17:24A mistress having Enzo's love child, and that kind of situation.
- 17:28Being accepted or what not back then, still doesn't matter.
- 17:32I mean, it's a slap in the face in regards to your wife.
- 17:36It's like, you don't respect me.
- 17:37But again, it's just such a different time back then.
- 17:39You know, and then you're talking, you know, a time it was in Italy, that was
- 17:43old world, just different, different time.
- 17:45So, I hope you appreciated my ramblings.
- 17:48About Laura Ferrari and like you said celebrating women's history month here
- 17:52I wanted to get out there look I think for her role what she did and contributed
- 17:56to Ferrari is Undervalued and I think there needs to be more Celebration of
- 18:01regards to how much she contributed to the company I honestly believe
- 18:05she saved it from financial ruin when she finally started taking over the
- 18:08finances, getting involved more, going to the races, everything like that.
- 18:11I think she actually probably saved the company.
- 18:13So I think she needs to be celebrated a lot more in regards to the story
- 18:17of Ferrari to where it is today.
- 18:19Because everything always lines up in place.
- 18:21You look at something that's getting close to 100 years old.
- 18:25It's an entity lasting that long.
