- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, everybody in the wonderful BRUP Welcome to something
- 0:03Speaker 1: that I couldn't be more excited about. It is interviewing
- 0:06Speaker 1: one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever do it, a
- 0:08Speaker 1: four time Super Bowl champion, the original Joe Cool Joe
- 0:12Speaker 1: Frickin' Montana in the house.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Thanks man, appreciate that.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Super Bowl week Yep, you've now been to a bunch
- 0:19Speaker 1: of them. How different is it now compared to when
- 0:23Speaker 1: you were in these because I feel like now it
- 0:25Speaker 1: is a festival, it is a circus. It's got to
- 0:28Speaker 1: be different, Oh for sure.
- 0:30Speaker 2: I mean when you watch the media day, when you
- 0:34Speaker 2: see the highlights of it on TV. For the players,
- 0:38Speaker 2: it's insane. There's just so many people out there. And
- 0:41Speaker 2: yeah there were a lot, well we were when we
- 0:43Speaker 2: were playing, but well with all the social.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Media and all the.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Everyone's Twitter everything you want to talk about, sure is
- 0:53Speaker 2: now always at the game. And it's got to be
- 0:58Speaker 2: tough on the guys, know, yeah, the pressure to.
- 1:03Speaker 1: And yet we have a guy like Mahomes that I
- 1:05Speaker 1: feel like is unfazed by any of this stuff. Oh yeah,
- 1:10Speaker 1: when you're in the process of building a dynasty. I'm
- 1:14Speaker 1: hearing the Chiefs a lot say right now, Oh, we
- 1:16Speaker 1: don't talk about it. Did you guys talk about it
- 1:18Speaker 1: when you were building a dynasty?
- 1:20Speaker 2: No, not at all.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Never came up, maybe like after the game or at
- 1:24Speaker 1: the parade, but then it never came out. No.
- 1:27Speaker 2: The only thing that came up was we got to
- 1:29Speaker 2: get to the next we want another one, So you
- 1:32Speaker 2: don't think about the dynasty part of it. Yeah, And
- 1:35Speaker 2: I think once once you're out of it, and then
- 1:41Speaker 2: people like me are asking about it when you have
- 1:43Speaker 2: a chance to look back on it while you're in
- 1:45Speaker 2: the middle of it. Yeah, that's probably why they don't
- 1:48Speaker 2: want to talk about it, is that they're still they're
- 1:50Speaker 2: still going. Yeah, they got a long way to go
- 1:53Speaker 2: with that with the team they got.
- 1:54Speaker 1: And how hard is it sustained excellence? How hard is that.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Just sustain that level?
- 2:02Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 2:04Speaker 2: I think I don't think mentally it's that hard. I
- 2:07Speaker 2: think that the longer you keep pushing into your off
- 2:12Speaker 2: season year after year after year, I think the team
- 2:16Speaker 2: just begins to break down, Like physically, you don't have
- 2:18Speaker 2: the same time to recover. Sure, it was it became
- 2:23Speaker 2: a little bit different for us because Bill Walsh did
- 2:25Speaker 2: something that no one was doing at the time, and
- 2:28Speaker 2: I don't know if anybody else is doing it right now,
- 2:30Speaker 2: but we got to a point where during the training
- 2:34Speaker 2: camp we would never wear pads. We'd put shoulder pads
- 2:37Speaker 2: on to time up some running stuff, and then if
- 2:40Speaker 2: we were going to scrimmage, you put pads on, and
- 2:42Speaker 2: then as soon as the scrimmage part of practice was over,
- 2:44Speaker 2: you take them off.
- 2:46Speaker 1: And that started as you guys were going deeper into
- 2:49Speaker 1: the year for Super Oh Wow.
- 2:51Speaker 2: And so what he started to realize was that offensive lineman,
- 2:56Speaker 2: they never wear, you know, the long sleeves or anything,
- 2:59Speaker 2: so you would he would see their arms were just
- 3:01Speaker 2: nothing but bruises from Sunday to Sunday. And so he
- 3:05Speaker 2: came up with this idea that you know, as long
- 3:08Speaker 2: as you guys show me the effort, we're not gonna
- 3:11Speaker 2: wear pads. We'll put and in practice during the season
- 3:15Speaker 2: we put shoulder pads on for a ten play period
- 3:17Speaker 2: of run plays the time up and that off they'd go,
- 3:21Speaker 2: and he goes, but if I don't see the effort
- 3:23Speaker 2: I want to see, we'll go back in and put
- 3:26Speaker 2: the pads on.
- 3:26Speaker 1: It's a fair arrangement, you know.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Yeah, And he was one of the first like you
- 3:30Speaker 2: would hear guys when we were playing guys after the game. Seriously,
- 3:33Speaker 2: you guys don't wear.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Pads after the game bringing it out.
- 3:36Speaker 2: I go, you would die laughing because we we had
- 3:38Speaker 2: one of our defensive linemen and he was hurt, but
- 3:43Speaker 2: he was going to play. He came up, he had
- 3:45Speaker 2: a stool, he was sitting on a stool and watched practice.
- 3:47Speaker 1: It's crazy you said the phrase Bill had an idea? Boy,
- 3:51Speaker 1: did he have ideas?
- 3:52Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 3:54Speaker 1: How did where do you think that came from? With
- 3:56Speaker 1: with Bill Walsh? Because I feel like he looked at
- 3:58Speaker 1: the game so differently than anyone else ever had at
- 4:01Speaker 1: that point.
- 4:04Speaker 2: You know, it was we had no idea, you know,
- 4:07Speaker 2: but he would he stuck. I mean, he put a
- 4:10Speaker 2: lot of time in and he prepared and prepared. He
- 4:13Speaker 2: prepared hard to anybody. And sometimes he would put in
- 4:16Speaker 2: a play and we'd run it and practice and it
- 4:21Speaker 2: would it was terrible, really right. So then I get
- 4:25Speaker 2: in the game and I had to start to get
- 4:27Speaker 2: I started to call the play and you would hear
- 4:30Speaker 2: someone go, no, no, here, we let's go, and then
- 4:34Speaker 2: you run it in the game and it would be
- 4:37Speaker 2: open and you would, but it was only for it
- 4:41Speaker 2: was so weird. It would be like only for a
- 4:43Speaker 2: specific part of the field against at a certain time,
- 4:48Speaker 2: he had it all measured out exactly when he was
- 4:50Speaker 2: going to call that play.
- 4:52Speaker 1: The blessing of being a really good athlete at the
- 4:56Speaker 1: same time as having a really good coach sometimes that
- 5:00Speaker 1: doesn't align. Do you see that with Pat and Andy?
- 5:03Speaker 1: Do you see a similar relationship that you and Bill had.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I think they're at that point where he gives
- 5:10Speaker 2: him a lot of leadway and a lot of rain.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Once he gets to the line of screamage, you can
- 5:15Speaker 2: see him calling for plays with his hand and but
- 5:18Speaker 2: for the most part, once he gets to play, you
- 5:21Speaker 2: know that's a quarterback who is prepared in his studied.
- 5:25Speaker 2: When you can give him someone that amount of lead
- 5:28Speaker 2: way to be able to change plays, that tells you
- 5:32Speaker 2: the coach has a lot of confidence in his ability
- 5:35Speaker 2: and understanding of what he's looking at. And it takes
- 5:38Speaker 2: a lot of time to get to that point as
- 5:41Speaker 2: a player. So that was one of the things where
- 5:44Speaker 2: I eventually got with Bill, where he realized I understand
- 5:47Speaker 2: what his offense was about, right, Because in the beginning
- 5:50Speaker 2: part we didn't have Jerry Rice and John Taylor. We
- 5:53Speaker 2: had Dwight Clark and Freddie Solomon. But our passing game
- 5:58Speaker 2: was basically a part of our running game because we
- 6:01Speaker 2: didn't have Roger Craig at that time. And so he goes,
- 6:06Speaker 2: I'm gonna say, I'm gonna give you guys down the field,
- 6:09Speaker 2: but first down in that I don't need you to
- 6:11Speaker 2: force it.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Take it. Take what's that?
- 6:13Speaker 2: I'm going to give you two more guys down here,
- 6:15Speaker 2: take free money. Yeah, and and take four or five
- 6:18Speaker 2: and just keep That's just I want to keep pressure
- 6:20Speaker 2: on the defense. And so and it's funny like defensive
- 6:26Speaker 2: minds and how they were. So you you you hear
- 6:29Speaker 2: it a million times. Somebody hands the ball off on
- 6:32Speaker 2: first down, you gain four yards, right, you can't give
- 6:34Speaker 2: up four yards on a run?
- 6:36Speaker 1: Yeah, first down?
- 6:37Speaker 2: Yeah, you drop back the pass on first down, don't
- 6:41Speaker 2: like what's down there, hit the tight end for four yards.
- 6:44Speaker 2: They feel like they won. You're right, you're right, and
- 6:48Speaker 2: well it's the same four yards. Yeah, And then all
- 6:50Speaker 2: of a sudden you're inside their twenty and they're going
- 6:52Speaker 2: how they get here?
- 6:53Speaker 1: Exactly? So, because we matriculated our way down the field.
- 6:58Speaker 1: The discussion of greatness and its eras are always a thing.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Tom Brady was such a fan of yours and the
- 7:09Speaker 1: way when he was accomplishing things. I'm sure you were
- 7:12Speaker 1: talking about that. Now we're getting a lot of pat
- 7:17Speaker 1: with Tom. Is pat in already in that discussion with
- 7:21Speaker 1: you guys? Can you feel him in that group?
- 7:23Speaker 2: Yeah? By far he's in And it's not really with
- 7:26Speaker 2: me and Tom, it's just in general. You know, he's
- 7:30Speaker 2: in the upper echelon of quarterbacks and what they've been
- 7:33Speaker 2: able and he's only twenty nine. That's that's the sad part.
- 7:36Speaker 2: He has many a sad parts for a lot of
- 7:38Speaker 2: NFL teams. Definitely, definitely, But yeah, he's definitely what all.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Three of you have though, is in the biggest moments
- 7:46Speaker 1: you are obviously cool under pressure. Is that a trait
- 7:50Speaker 1: like not everybody has that?
- 7:52Speaker 2: Yeah. I always try to figure out how what it
- 7:58Speaker 2: is or what it was inside of me that. But
- 8:02Speaker 2: the one thing I tried to do join the games,
- 8:03Speaker 2: whether we're winning, losing, or the game was tight going
- 8:06Speaker 2: back and forth. I tried to keep my personality the same,
- 8:11Speaker 2: and but I I never was afraid to be in
- 8:15Speaker 2: the with the ball in my hand. Yeah, you know,
- 8:18Speaker 2: I'd rather have the ball in my hand than to rely.
- 8:22Speaker 2: I mean, we had great defenses, don't get me wrong,
- 8:24Speaker 2: because they'd stop everybody. But I'd rather have my I'd
- 8:27Speaker 2: rather have my hands on the ball when it came
- 8:29Speaker 2: down to it. It was a lot more fun too.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Accord back, that's the.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Favorite story of you, of the John Candy story, loosening
- 8:36Speaker 1: it up. Oh my god, is that John Candy out there?
- 8:39Speaker 2: It was?
- 8:40Speaker 1: I asked us to Jayden Daniels. It's hard being the
- 8:43Speaker 1: guy because you can't have an off day.
- 8:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Was there moments where in the midst of this run
- 8:48Speaker 1: where you'd be in the parking lot before walking into
- 8:51Speaker 1: the facility and being like, come on, Joe, everyone like
- 8:54Speaker 1: you gotta almost have to like pump yourself up to
- 8:56Speaker 1: be the guy. Or was it just always there?
- 8:58Speaker 2: No, it's it's just the Yeah, I didn't even think
- 9:01Speaker 2: about it, that's just it.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Never it never felt too much weight, is what I'm doing.
- 9:05Speaker 2: No, And I think part of it the reason is
- 9:07Speaker 2: is that when I got when I got to the
- 9:10Speaker 2: forty nine ers, I you know, I thought I was
- 9:12Speaker 2: I had a good preparation behind me. I mean, I
- 9:15Speaker 2: played at Notre Dame, won a national championship, we played
- 9:19Speaker 2: in all kinds of we won three other bowl games,
- 9:23Speaker 2: we played the semi pro USC team every year. And
- 9:30Speaker 2: but I really, till I met Bill, had no idea
- 9:33Speaker 2: really what preparation was about. And I think the way
- 9:36Speaker 2: he taught the quarterback or he wanted everybody to prepare,
- 9:40Speaker 2: was I want you to come to and try to
- 9:41Speaker 2: be perfect every day, not just Sunday, because how you
- 9:45Speaker 2: practice is how you're gonna that's what you're striving to
- 9:48Speaker 2: practice or play life. Sure, so he wanted you to
- 9:51Speaker 2: be perfect every day. And it became it wasn't me
- 9:55Speaker 2: against our defense in practice, it was me against me.
- 10:00Speaker 2: So I fought myself to try to be perfect every
- 10:03Speaker 2: day every day.
- 10:04Speaker 1: Who were you being compared to in your era? Like, well,
- 10:08Speaker 1: was it Phil, Phil Simms? Who else?
- 10:10Speaker 2: You don't know, who else.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Are you being compared to during that run?
- 10:14Speaker 2: I don't know if there was. I've never heard comparisons.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Yeah, it was kind of just you.
- 10:20Speaker 2: Yeah, well you know we had we always had a
- 10:23Speaker 2: battle with Phil all the time. That those were some
- 10:25Speaker 2: fun days. But yeah, we joke about it today. Well yeah, yeah,
- 10:30Speaker 2: and uh but yeah, his preparation, I think. And when
- 10:35Speaker 2: you have that preparation, yeah, you go into a game,
- 10:38Speaker 2: you're you're just yeah, it's nothing. I mean because when
- 10:42Speaker 2: you practice those guys on we practice against every day,
- 10:46Speaker 2: they know all our audibles and everything. Yes, and so
- 10:48Speaker 2: they cheat and they you know, the defense because they're
- 10:51Speaker 2: always cheating, and so they would if you can beat
- 10:55Speaker 2: them and you go into a game field pretty good.
- 11:01Speaker 1: This what happens is that every generation thinks their generation
- 11:04Speaker 1: is better than the one before. We have it in basketball,
- 11:07Speaker 1: we have it in football as well. What's interesting in
- 11:10Speaker 1: terms of wide receivers is people go, oh, random Oss
- 11:15Speaker 1: Terrell Owens, like the younger generation doesn't put Jerry out there,
- 11:19Speaker 1: even though the stats are crazy. How do you explain
- 11:22Speaker 1: to the younger generation what Jerry Rice.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Is When we were just talking about preparation, and Jerry
- 11:32Speaker 2: was the first round pick out of a small school
- 11:36Speaker 2: in south and when he came to the forty nine ers,
- 11:41Speaker 2: he struggled a little bit in the first few days
- 11:42Speaker 2: of practice, trying too hard. But the one thing that
- 11:45Speaker 2: he did was he brought another level of practice to
- 11:52Speaker 2: the team. So when you when you when you throw
- 11:54Speaker 2: the pass, In practice, wide receivers are taught catch the
- 11:57Speaker 2: ball turned ten fifteen yards up the field, then you know,
- 12:00Speaker 2: come back, well, Jerry. The first time he catches a pass,
- 12:04Speaker 2: I don't know it was forty yards, sixty, I don't remember,
- 12:07Speaker 2: but he run and he runs to the end zone,
- 12:12Speaker 2: and from that point on, every time he touched the ball,
- 12:16Speaker 2: whether it was nine yards to the end zone or
- 12:18Speaker 2: ninety yards to the end zone, he would run score touchdown.
- 12:21Speaker 1: The rest of that team had to be like, Jerry,
- 12:23Speaker 1: can you hurry out?
- 12:23Speaker 2: Exactly what are you doing now? Our practices we didn't
- 12:27Speaker 2: have a time limit on practice. We had a play
- 12:28Speaker 2: limit and we had to get through with these plays.
- 12:30Speaker 1: So try hard. Jerry's running and you're like, oh, we're.
- 12:34Speaker 2: So In the meantime, you ask yourself, is it a
- 12:39Speaker 2: coincidence that Jerry's the NFL's touchdown reception leader of all
- 12:44Speaker 2: time by a large number and people have had chances
- 12:48Speaker 2: to try to catch him, but they just didn't have
- 12:50Speaker 2: the the sustainability. He worked hard off the field all
- 12:54Speaker 2: the time, run the hills. Yeah, it's just insane, and
- 12:58Speaker 2: then it became contagious. It's like, so you thought about
- 13:01Speaker 2: a JT. And Jt'd run in practice and you throw
- 13:04Speaker 2: about a roge or hand it off and they eat
- 13:06Speaker 2: and run. And then sometimes you see three of them
- 13:07Speaker 2: running down there, right, and you forget, like the little
- 13:10Speaker 2: things that you forget that happened. All of a sudden,
- 13:15Speaker 2: we're playing the Rams and we're backed up. We're not
- 13:22Speaker 2: playing well in LA and we usually played them well,
- 13:25Speaker 2: especially down there. And we get the ball in the
- 13:27Speaker 2: four yard line and I take three steps back to
- 13:31Speaker 2: a seven yard slant to JT. He goes ninety six
- 13:36Speaker 2: for a touchdown. But Jerry's all the way down the field,
- 13:39Speaker 2: throwing a block for him to get him into the
- 13:41Speaker 2: end zone. We get the ball in the six yard
- 13:44Speaker 2: line that same game, same game, same three steps, same
- 13:49Speaker 2: seven yard pass, ninety four yards for a touchdown Jerry
- 13:53Speaker 2: this time, no again, and Jerry's down in the end zone.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Get throwing the buck to get JT in the end zone.
- 14:02Speaker 1: Wow.
- 14:02Speaker 2: And so I like, I'm laughing after this is over.
- 14:06Speaker 2: And so I'll never say anything to Jerry again because
- 14:10Speaker 2: as a quarterback, and I have just known two passes
- 14:12Speaker 2: ver what fourteen yards but into books it's one yards. Yeah,
- 14:18Speaker 2: And so those things became contagious and his work ethic
- 14:22Speaker 2: was just unprecedented when it came to that.
- 14:26Speaker 1: The stories of him and Dion in practice, where Jerry's
- 14:29Speaker 1: like the ultimate practice guy and Dion's like I do
- 14:32Speaker 1: whatever I want and I'm better than everybody. That that
- 14:36Speaker 1: dynamic must have been insane between us.
- 14:38Speaker 2: Fortunately I wasn't there.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I know, I just I hear the stories. I
- 14:42Speaker 1: can't imagine because Jerry is so type A and I
- 14:46Speaker 1: feel like Dion wants to challenge type A people all.
- 14:49Speaker 2: The time the time. But when you're when.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Your main guy works that hard, no one else has
- 14:55Speaker 1: an excuse.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Yeah, no one, Yeah, and and but that was the
- 14:59Speaker 2: one thing, and that was the reason we were able
- 15:01Speaker 2: to go in pad Liss was because that those efforts
- 15:05Speaker 2: became on both sides of the ball. And so and
- 15:08Speaker 2: if you weren't living up to it, that you had
- 15:11Speaker 2: somebody named Ronnie loting down.
- 15:14Speaker 1: That's so funny. I was going to go to Ronnie
- 15:15Speaker 1: a lot.
- 15:16Speaker 2: So.
- 15:16Speaker 1: My favorite athlete of all time is Brian Dawkins. My
- 15:19Speaker 1: second favorite athlete is Ronnie Lot. I loved safeties that
- 15:23Speaker 1: inflicted fear, and I have heard the pinky story a
- 15:28Speaker 1: million times. How was that story told to you when
- 15:32Speaker 1: it happened that your teammate cut off his pinky? Like,
- 15:36Speaker 1: where were you when you found out that news?
- 15:38Speaker 2: In the locker room? So you're in the.
- 15:39Speaker 1: Locker room and it wasn't You won't believe what just happened.
- 15:42Speaker 2: They just what they just did. And so but that's Ronnie,
- 15:45Speaker 2: though Ronnie sacrificed anything.
- 15:47Speaker 1: So for those who know, So I don't know why
- 15:49Speaker 1: he had to cut it off.
- 15:50Speaker 2: Well, you know what, they gave him a choice. So
- 15:53Speaker 2: he got stuck in the middle of the part of
- 15:55Speaker 2: the face mask and it ripped, it was hanging on.
- 15:58Speaker 2: They gave him the opportunity. Oh sorry, they getting the opportunity.
- 16:02Speaker 2: So you can do one of two things. We can
- 16:03Speaker 2: sew it back on. So this is middle of the
- 16:05Speaker 2: game or is it part but I can't remember what
- 16:07Speaker 2: part of the game. And they said we can sew
- 16:10Speaker 2: it back on and put a glove on or something,
- 16:13Speaker 2: and no, you can play in six weeks or so,
- 16:16Speaker 2: or we can cut it off and you can play
- 16:18Speaker 2: next week. So I'll play next week. So and now
- 16:22Speaker 2: you know we were talking about my son, Jennifer, our son,
- 16:29Speaker 2: our youngest Nicholas. Yeah, Ronnie's his godfather. Really yeah, so
- 16:35Speaker 2: now you know where Nikki gets it from.
- 16:36Speaker 1: So did you guys find out in the middle of
- 16:39Speaker 1: the game that he had done that or did you
- 16:41Speaker 1: realize after the game?
- 16:42Speaker 2: After the game? So Asa Monta knew before it joined
- 16:45Speaker 2: the game, but I didn't find out.
- 16:47Speaker 1: What was it like after like that week after the game, Like,
- 16:49Speaker 1: did you go to right like Ronnie you didn't need
- 16:51Speaker 1: to do that?
- 16:52Speaker 2: No, no, no, no you didn't. You didn't have to ask
- 16:54Speaker 2: Ronnie again, Ronnie was Ronnie was a full speed, one
- 16:58Speaker 2: hundred and ten percent no matter what, and he's going
- 17:00Speaker 2: to do anything. I said, Like, there's times like we
- 17:03Speaker 2: were walking. I was walking in the shower behind our
- 17:06Speaker 2: middle linebacker and I saw the huge, like bruise about
- 17:11Speaker 2: basketball size. I go, how do you get a bruise
- 17:14Speaker 2: that big on your back? He goes, Ronnie? Ronnie, He goes,
- 17:18Speaker 2: don't stand around the pile because Ronnie has come flying
- 17:22Speaker 2: diving in unbelievable. He didn't care who you hit.
- 17:26Speaker 1: I'm sure you're doing a million Super Bowl predictions, not
- 17:30Speaker 1: who's gonna win, which we'll get to, but how do
- 17:33Speaker 1: you when you're looking at an NFL game how do
- 17:35Speaker 1: you evaluate the teams to come up with the decision, Like,
- 17:38Speaker 1: when you're looking at these two rosters, what do you
- 17:40Speaker 1: look at?
- 17:44Speaker 2: Well, there are almost two different teams, you know so
- 17:47Speaker 2: far far apart, and the defensive teams are both playing
- 17:53Speaker 2: well different styles.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Spagnolo aggressive Eagles, keep everything in front of you, total yep.
- 18:00Speaker 2: And then you then you look on the offensive side
- 18:03Speaker 2: of the ball. You've got Mahomes run doing everything. They
- 18:06Speaker 2: run still run the ball well, and they mixing them
- 18:10Speaker 2: lot and it's gonna come down to Jalen You feel, Yeah,
- 18:15Speaker 2: I think that it's gonna have to play mistake proof ball.
- 18:20Speaker 2: They're gonna have to run the ball. You know, they've
- 18:22Speaker 2: got to get Berkley going, and and if they can
- 18:26Speaker 2: keep the touches down amount down for Patrick, that I
- 18:31Speaker 2: think they got it. They think they got a chance.
- 18:33Speaker 2: They're a good football team. So if you look at
- 18:35Speaker 2: them on both sides, more physical more, I won't say, God,
- 18:43Speaker 2: I don't even know how they explain the Chiefs because
- 18:45Speaker 2: they're they are physical to a certain degree, but yet
- 18:47Speaker 2: they're agile, right, and so it's totally totally different plays.
- 18:51Speaker 1: When I watch the Chiefs, I see a team that
- 18:55Speaker 1: when the moment arises, they always make the play.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:58Speaker 1: So if it's third and long, we're blitzing everybody and
- 19:01Speaker 1: our corners taking the perfect route to the quarterback. If
- 19:04Speaker 1: it's offense, sure it could be pat creating, or it
- 19:08Speaker 1: could be a perfect like counterplay to the running back
- 19:12Speaker 1: that you weren't expecting. They always own the moment, and
- 19:16Speaker 1: I have to imagine this because they've been there before. Yeah, Like,
- 19:18Speaker 1: I'm sure on your third super Bowl it was it
- 19:22Speaker 1: was a lot calmer for you than it was for
- 19:24Speaker 1: the other team, you know.
- 19:26Speaker 2: I'm sure, although our third one was was a little
- 19:28Speaker 2: bit of a struggle whiles.
- 19:31Speaker 1: Oh well that was the high flying shootout.
- 19:33Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, no, no, no, no, I'm sorry. The fourth one
- 19:38Speaker 2: was with the twenty three was the tough one, gotcha
- 19:43Speaker 2: where we were playing Cincinnati. Yeah, and we came back
- 19:47Speaker 2: to from behind. Yeah, boomer boomers. But Sam Whitch was
- 19:51Speaker 2: my first quarterback coach in San Francisco, so we have
- 19:55Speaker 2: been friends, and it was like beating one of your
- 19:57Speaker 2: best friends.
- 19:58Speaker 1: So that's what it feels like right now with the
- 19:59Speaker 1: Eagles and the and he read a little bit, who
- 20:02Speaker 1: do you have winning?
- 20:04Speaker 2: It's hard to bet against the Chiefs, But honestly, I
- 20:08Speaker 2: think Philly has as good a chances as that. But
- 20:12Speaker 2: I just I just find it hard to bet against Mahomes.
- 20:14Speaker 2: And in the end, it's it's just too hard, just
- 20:17Speaker 2: too too hard.
- 20:18Speaker 1: When when if Mahomes were to come to you and
- 20:23Speaker 1: he goes, hey, man, like I just want you to
- 20:25Speaker 1: know you're incredible all this stuff, what would you What
- 20:28Speaker 1: would you tell Mahomes just about how he's playing? What
- 20:31Speaker 1: would you share with him?
- 20:33Speaker 2: I would say, you just keep doing what you're doing.
- 20:35Speaker 2: Then you, I mean, you're obviously having tremendous success, but
- 20:39Speaker 2: you're a hell a lot of fun to work.
- 20:42Speaker 1: My last thing for you is in this discussion of
- 20:45Speaker 1: the greatest of all time and all that, how do
- 20:48Speaker 1: you process that when your name is mentioned and all
- 20:50Speaker 1: of that.
- 20:51Speaker 2: I think it's hard, you know, I mean I totally understand,
- 20:54Speaker 2: you know, what Brady's were doing, has done, what Mahomes
- 20:58Speaker 2: is in the process of doing, and he's gonna end up.
- 21:01Speaker 2: But it's really the eras are so different. I mean,
- 21:06Speaker 2: I always go back even further where you look at Graham.
- 21:11Speaker 1: I was gonna say, like Auto Graham, like a little
- 21:13Speaker 1: level championship.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, how do.
- 21:15Speaker 1: You That's like, you're right, so we're talking about the
- 21:17Speaker 1: greatest NBA players and Bill Russell has eleven and we
- 21:19Speaker 1: don't mention them, but that's that's what his competition was
- 21:23Speaker 1: at the time. Yeah, totally.
- 21:25Speaker 2: And that's one of my favorites.
- 21:26Speaker 1: Johnny Unitas. How do you factor where Johnny, you's supposed
- 21:29Speaker 1: to go the first guy to get up there and
- 21:31Speaker 1: call his own plays. And then yeah, it's like, look
- 21:35Speaker 1: at the help Tom Brady had, look at what Peyton
- 21:37Speaker 1: Manning had. Was that equal?
- 21:39Speaker 2: It's interesting to compare it. It's fun, it's fun to
- 21:43Speaker 2: do for people.
- 21:44Speaker 1: To And then my last question will be, you know,
- 21:48Speaker 1: Sunday when that stadium is bumping, what is that energy
- 21:53Speaker 1: like for you?
- 21:55Speaker 2: You still really especially national anthem? And then right after that,
- 22:00Speaker 2: it's just I want to ask you.
- 22:01Speaker 1: I have seen Chris Jones cry during the national anthem.
- 22:05Speaker 1: I have talked to a lot of athletes that have
- 22:06Speaker 1: told me it's the national anthem. Why is it the
- 22:09Speaker 1: national anthem that causes the realization.
- 22:12Speaker 2: Because the s is about to hit the fan, maybe
- 22:16Speaker 2: it is time to go. This is what you've been
- 22:18Speaker 2: waiting two weeks for right, Normally you're in that week,
- 22:20Speaker 2: you're used to, bodies used to that week. This is
- 22:23Speaker 2: two weeks to get there, and everybody's ready to play.
- 22:25Speaker 2: We used to have more fights in the second week
- 22:27Speaker 2: of practice than any other time, the second week of
- 22:29Speaker 2: Super Bowl football practice, just because of frustration. Everybody's ready
- 22:34Speaker 2: to go. And yeah, you know, you're just biding your time.
- 22:36Speaker 2: And so after this, what when that plays, you know
- 22:40Speaker 2: the game's about to be I.
- 22:41Speaker 1: Also think it's like the first time that you stop moving,
- 22:45Speaker 1: no one's reminding you of your keys, no one's talking
- 22:48Speaker 1: about anything, and you're just standing there just like a fan. Yeah,
- 22:53Speaker 1: standing at attention, hand behind your back. And then it's like,
- 22:56Speaker 1: oh shit, yeh, here we go. It's time. And so
- 23:00Speaker 1: when you guys are watching the Super Bowl and you
- 23:02Speaker 1: see that, that's what's happening at that moment. Pretty cool man,
- 23:05Speaker 1: Joe Montana, one of the greatest to ever do it,
- 23:07Speaker 1: one of the coolest men in the business. Thank you, brother,
- 23:10Speaker 1: I appreciate you.
