- 0:00Speaker 1: To the Rams and we talked about how that didn't
- 0:02Speaker 1: happen overnight. And now the story, of course is coming
- 0:04Speaker 1: out that it's been months, if not years in the making,
- 0:07Speaker 1: and we knew that.
- 0:08Speaker 2: For how big the deal was.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Eight minutes later, ESPN's Emily Kaplan with the story that
- 0:16Speaker 1: the Kraken have a new investor, so does one Root.
- 0:20Speaker 1: More to the point, so does One roof Sports and Entertainment.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Melinda French Gates her involvement. The story is not that
- 0:29Speaker 1: she's an investor in the Crack, and we talked about
- 0:31Speaker 1: this at Lenk yesterday, including with ian story is she's
- 0:33Speaker 1: an investor in One roof Sports and Entertainment, Samantha Holloway's entity.
- 0:36Speaker 1: She recently created the Krack and owner created to run
- 0:41Speaker 1: the building Climate Pledgerina, which has been built to NBA specifications,
- 0:44Speaker 1: and One Roof Sports and Entertainment is the company that
- 0:47Speaker 1: will spearhead a bid to bring the Sonics back to Seattle.
- 0:52Speaker 1: That's the story, and that's what Melinda French Gates is
- 0:55Speaker 1: signing onto. And when you're worth thirty billion dollars, suddenly
- 0:59Speaker 1: that bid has a little more heft. With moving the
- 1:01Speaker 1: French Gase behind it. I think that got the NBA's
- 1:04Speaker 1: attention yesterday for sure, in addition to and the NHL.
- 1:09Speaker 1: You think Gary Bettman and the NHL commissioner and Adam Silver,
- 1:14Speaker 1: the NBA commissioner, aren't going to get asked about that
- 1:15Speaker 1: before Game ones of their finals next two.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Oh yeah, that's definitely going to be some questions about
- 1:20Speaker 3: that for sure.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Right, what does this mean and what does it mean
- 1:23Speaker 1: for Seattle and the NBA? It means all good. I mean,
- 1:29Speaker 1: there's no other say. It's a good thing. The NBA's
- 1:34Speaker 1: bid in Seattle just got a lot of heft yesterday.
- 1:37Speaker 1: So that was the stuff yesterday. And then I'm preparing
- 1:40Speaker 1: to come down from Green Lake to the show today,
- 1:44Speaker 1: and the Seahawks have an agreement with Derek Hall. We'll
- 1:48Speaker 1: talk about that during the show. Why they did that
- 1:51Speaker 1: for how much. We're also talking about how I think
- 1:54Speaker 1: Cole Young is now the best all around Mariners player
- 1:57Speaker 1: and he's only twenty two years old. How the Mets
- 2:00Speaker 1: got cute last night in the tenth inning to set
- 2:03Speaker 1: up Young's game.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Winning hit, which might not have happened.
- 2:05Speaker 1: That that game might have gone to the eleventh inning
- 2:06Speaker 1: if the Mets and their relief pitcher didn't get cute
- 2:09Speaker 1: on the mound. Major League Baseball's team owners they're trying
- 2:13Speaker 1: to ram a salary cap onto their players for the
- 2:16Speaker 1: first time. We've talked a little bit about that. Now
- 2:19Speaker 1: they're copying how NFL owners split its players' union, and.
- 2:24Speaker 2: They're gonna get that lead.
- 2:25Speaker 1: That's how the league's collect a bartneying agreement in the
- 2:27Speaker 1: NFL got voted on in twenty twenty.
- 2:31Speaker 2: The veterans hate.
- 2:32Speaker 1: This deal because it's, among other things, the deal that
- 2:34Speaker 1: got a seventeenth regular season game the veterans did not want. Well,
- 2:38Speaker 1: the Major League Baseball owners are doing the same thing.
- 2:41Speaker 1: I'm going to tell you how they're trying to split
- 2:43Speaker 1: the union the same way the NFL owners did. We'll
- 2:46Speaker 1: talk about that as well. Eleven o'clock Luke Arkins Mariners
- 2:49Speaker 1: Consigly air newsletter, Mariners analyst on our streaking first place Ams.
- 2:54Speaker 1: We even talk to our Navy pow for a while.
- 2:56Speaker 1: We get him back on the air at eleven o'clock.
- 2:58Speaker 1: When you're Beacon Plumbing Hotline eleven thirty year text four
- 3:01Speaker 1: nine four five one. We talked about yesterday being a
- 3:05Speaker 1: anniversary for the Sonics forty seven years ago when they
- 3:09Speaker 1: won the NBA Championship in nineteen seventy nine, thirty years ago.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Today in Seattle, this happened rights for.
- 3:17Speaker 3: Dream the leader, no rebut.
- 3:27Speaker 2: The Seattle Sonics are going to the NBA Championship round.
- 3:33Speaker 3: I thought we played relaxed as a very difficult basketball game.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Utah battle this every.
- 3:38Speaker 3: Game and I'm just I'm just excited for my team.
- 3:42Speaker 1: And play the brow players and a lot of stuff
- 3:45Speaker 1: has been said.
- 3:45Speaker 2: About it in this city that's not true. And I
- 3:48Speaker 2: think now we can say that how.
- 3:49Speaker 3: Much relief is there for you now that this is
- 3:52Speaker 3: behind you with all of the playoff problems of the past.
- 3:55Speaker 3: My nightmare just begins trying to figure out how to
- 3:57Speaker 3: beat Chicago.
- 3:58Speaker 2: But it's a city that after the Mariners last September,
- 4:03Speaker 2: there's a lot of excitement here. I think we'll get
- 4:05Speaker 2: a good time.
- 4:07Speaker 1: That was coach George Carl. Of course I missed George Carl.
- 4:10Speaker 1: He was a pleasure to cover. He just told it
- 4:13Speaker 1: like it was, and if guys were loafing, if guys
- 4:16Speaker 1: screwed up assignments, he just said it didn't once didn't
- 4:20Speaker 1: like something. Wally Walker was doing. GM just said it.
- 4:23Speaker 1: He was fabulous. The chip on his shoulder. You can
- 4:26Speaker 1: hear them talk him talking to Jim Gray and then said,
- 4:28Speaker 1: oh yeah, now I.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Get a pound it. But way to beat Chicago.
- 4:32Speaker 1: That was June second, nineteen ninety six, Game seven of
- 4:35Speaker 1: the Western Conference Finals at the Old Key Arena when
- 4:38Speaker 1: the Sonics Sean penk Camp, Gary Payton, George Carl. They
- 4:42Speaker 1: beat Carl Malone and John Stockton in the Utah Jazz
- 4:44Speaker 1: to advance to the nineteen ninety six NBA Finals. As
- 4:49Speaker 1: you heard coach Carl say there, those finals were against
- 4:51Speaker 1: Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. The Sonics lost that
- 4:55Speaker 1: series in six games after losing the first three and
- 4:57Speaker 1: then winning the next two tho. So you have not
- 5:01Speaker 1: been around Seattle for thirty years, maybe can't comprehend about
- 5:06Speaker 1: how big a deal that was the Sonics getting back
- 5:09Speaker 1: to the NBA Finals for the first time in seventeen
- 5:11Speaker 1: years since they had won it in nineteen seventy nine,
- 5:14Speaker 1: and how off the hook those crowds were at Key
- 5:18Speaker 1: Arena and everyone knows the Basquey Arena and at the
- 5:21Speaker 1: carpetbackergs from Oklahoma City did that to get the team out.
- 5:24Speaker 1: But that place was jumping, and yes it had terribly
- 5:27Speaker 1: small concourses. Yes, it had a ramp you couldn't have
- 5:30Speaker 1: concerts in because trucks couldn't back down the steep ramp
- 5:33Speaker 1: to get their equipment in. It was ill designed for
- 5:37Speaker 1: a lot of the modern things that NBA arenas wanted,
- 5:39Speaker 1: and that's the reason that the Sonics broke their lease
- 5:42Speaker 1: after they sold, after Howard Schult sold.
- 5:44Speaker 2: It sold the team.
- 5:47Speaker 1: But in that Hayday in nineteen ninety six, that place
- 5:49Speaker 1: was loud, and the seats were on top of the
- 5:52Speaker 1: arena compared to most NBA buildings. There were narrow rows,
- 5:56Speaker 1: but that created a sound chamber that went right back
- 5:58Speaker 1: down onto the field on the court. Man, I just
- 6:02Speaker 1: remember attending those games in nineteen ninety five ninety six.
- 6:06Speaker 2: It was so loud in there.
- 6:08Speaker 1: It was so loud, like you thought the raptors might
- 6:10Speaker 1: come down on that historic roof and now it's easy
- 6:13Speaker 1: to bash.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Twelve years later, of course, the Sonics.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Twelve years from that moment, the Sonics left to Oklahoma
- 6:19Speaker 1: City and haven't been back since. That's what this city
- 6:22Speaker 1: is when basketball reigns, When it's supreme. And I know
- 6:27Speaker 1: I've been here for the Mariners in ninety five and
- 6:29Speaker 1: again the Mariners in two thousand and one, and the Seahawks.
- 6:32Speaker 1: I covered their first Super Bowl, I covered their first
- 6:35Speaker 1: Super Bowl championship. I covered their second Super Bowl championship.
- 6:38Speaker 1: But man, is this a basketball town. And when the
- 6:41Speaker 1: Sonics were rolling, this place was bumping about the Sonics,
- 6:46Speaker 1: everyone on the street, newscasts, from court side, front page
- 6:50Speaker 1: news and the Times and the PI. I think that
- 6:53Speaker 1: gets lost. And the national narrative, of course, is the
- 6:55Speaker 1: Sonics Seattle didn't support the Sonics and that's why they're gone.
- 6:58Speaker 1: And that's so far from the te so far from
- 7:01Speaker 1: the truth. So it's a good memory of thirty years ago. Today,
- 7:04Speaker 1: you could probably say the last greatest moment in Sonic's
- 7:07Speaker 1: history winning the Western Conference and getting into the nineteen
- 7:12Speaker 1: ninety six NBA Finals.
- 7:14Speaker 2: The team eventually broke up. Garry Peyton, Sean Kemp got.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Older, George Carl left in a squad with the team,
- 7:21Speaker 1: and so on.
- 7:22Speaker 2: But man, it couldn't get better then. I know, Chris,
- 7:26Speaker 2: we were what two years.
- 7:26Speaker 3: Old that time, when nineteen ninety nine, ninety six, ninety six,
- 7:31Speaker 3: I would have been four. Yeah, so you're going on five,
- 7:34Speaker 3: because yeah, going on five.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Do you remember anything about that? Absolutely not.
- 7:39Speaker 3: That'd be cool if I had memory of that age,
- 7:41Speaker 3: but I unfortunately don't.
- 7:42Speaker 1: I remember growing up in Pittsburgh when I was four
- 7:44Speaker 1: years old when they Super Bowl nine against the Minnesota Vikings,
- 7:47Speaker 1: listening to Kirk Gowdy in my basement in Minnesota in
- 7:51Speaker 1: New Orleans, dope dealers, first Super Bowl. Yeah, I remember
- 7:55Speaker 1: that when I was four. But yeah, the Sonics. For
- 7:57Speaker 1: those you who weren't around, check it out. Go look
- 8:00Speaker 1: at just any time during the ninety six season. That
- 8:02Speaker 1: was a team of the course that had been on
- 8:04Speaker 1: runs of top two, top one seeds into the playoffs
- 8:07Speaker 1: and then not getting there. Jim Gray in that interview
- 8:12Speaker 1: on the floor right after Game seven in nineteen ninety
- 8:14Speaker 1: six Western Conference Finals, talked to George carl about that
- 8:16Speaker 1: finally breaking through. But that was a run of successive
- 8:20Speaker 1: seasons that the Sonics were one of the best teams
- 8:22Speaker 1: in the NBA. Was sixty sixty five sixty seven wins
- 8:25Speaker 1: seasons in an eighty two game regular season, and man,
- 8:28Speaker 1: this town I just cannot describe for you if you
- 8:30Speaker 1: weren't here and if you were here four nine, four
- 8:32Speaker 1: or five to one on the Tacomadad's text sign, tell
- 8:34Speaker 1: us your memories of those times, because it was something.
- 8:38Speaker 1: And I still remember Bob Costas and Marv Albert coming
- 8:42Speaker 1: out for Tello. Those guys would come out and cover
- 8:44Speaker 1: the NBA Finals here in Seattle in June and.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Say this place is crazy. First of all, I.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Remember them saying it stays light till about ten thirty
- 8:51Speaker 1: a night. They couldn't believe that in June, and they
- 8:54Speaker 1: just couldn't believe the fervor inside that building when Michael
- 8:58Speaker 1: Jordan and the Bulls came in for the ninety six finals.
- 9:01Speaker 1: It was a special time. And this city really does
- 9:04Speaker 1: embrace championships as most cities do. But the just the
- 9:07Speaker 1: noise of all I think of all the venues and
- 9:09Speaker 1: the noise the Kingdome, Husky Stadium, the wave the I
- 9:14Speaker 1: mean now, Timo was Safego Field when it opened in
- 9:18Speaker 1: two thousand and one. Two safeg Field was sold out
- 9:20Speaker 1: for its first couple of seasons. Every game one hundred
- 9:23Speaker 1: and sixty eight eighty one games, one hundred and sixty
- 9:25Speaker 1: two games over two seasons sold out every night. I
- 9:27Speaker 1: remember coming here as the as B writer, and the
- 9:30Speaker 1: building was louder than any place in Major League Baseball
- 9:33Speaker 1: for a regular season game. Como Cairo King they all
- 9:36Speaker 1: had the newscasts anchors set up a desk inside Safego
- 9:40Speaker 1: Field during regular season A's Mariners games in two thousand
- 9:44Speaker 1: and one, during that one hundred and sixteen win season
- 9:47Speaker 1: when they set on America League record, and we've seen
- 9:48Speaker 1: the Seahawks when they take off.
- 9:50Speaker 2: So yeah, this is a sports town.
- 9:53Speaker 1: And you just look at the legacy of basketball here
- 9:55Speaker 1: and the products and players that have come out of here.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Even since the Sonics have left. This is absolutely a
- 10:00Speaker 1: basketball town and that's what we're on the cusp of
- 10:03Speaker 1: getting back. We'll see when the vote comes. Adam Silver's
- 10:07Speaker 1: promise in the NBA Commissioner promise that happened this year.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Those Mariners and.
- 10:15Speaker 1: Seven games, what a sight longest streak since last September
- 10:19Speaker 1: when they were pushing into the playoffs and they ended
- 10:22Speaker 1: up grabbing the American League West crown. And now it
- 10:25Speaker 1: does seem I mean, even if they have a losing streak,
- 10:28Speaker 1: they're going to stay at or near first place.
- 10:30Speaker 2: They're two and a.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Half up Texas has surged somewhat here in the last
- 10:33Speaker 1: week or so well. The Mariners have taken off the
- 10:35Speaker 1: rest of the division's fallen off. The A's are now
- 10:38Speaker 1: three games back, and the Angels are in an abyss,
- 10:42Speaker 1: and so is Houston with all its problems. So here
- 10:46Speaker 1: we are seven game wooning streak pitching among these.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Remember they were having trouble. They were one and four
- 10:52Speaker 2: and one running games.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Yeah, they ext running games, excuse me, ext training games.
- 10:56Speaker 1: And they were like seven and twelve and one run games.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Three the last four games have gone to ten innings
- 11:01Speaker 1: and they have not allowed. As Larry Stone, the great
- 11:03Speaker 1: former calumists of the Seattle Times and Barrier friend of
- 11:06Speaker 1: mine pointed out last night on Twitter, they haven't allowed
- 11:10Speaker 1: a tenth inning run, which is hard to do with
- 11:12Speaker 1: the ghost runner at second last night was Gabe Spider
- 11:15Speaker 1: who came in and just shut them down. But there
- 11:18Speaker 1: was a hero that earlier in the game, the Cole
- 11:21Speaker 1: Young double play. Not many twenty two years not many
- 11:24Speaker 1: thirty two year olds make that play at second base.
- 11:27Speaker 1: A chopper to him, He didn't panic. He stayed out
- 11:30Speaker 1: of the baseline to avoid the interference call tags The
- 11:33Speaker 1: runner as he's catching the chopper and then throws the
- 11:36Speaker 1: first for an easy double play, easy for him.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Then sun Yeah, but then Sunday.
- 11:41Speaker 1: We didn't talk about it yesterday with all was going on,
- 11:44Speaker 1: but his sacrifice bunt really won the game. They finally
- 11:47Speaker 1: bunted into the tenth inning because they had a guy
- 11:48Speaker 1: up there who could do it. Count on the twenty
- 11:50Speaker 1: two year old guy who's just got about a less
- 11:53Speaker 1: than a full season of experience to lay down the
- 11:55Speaker 1: bunt and get the runner to third. If that runner
- 11:58Speaker 1: is not at third, he doesn't score. On Victor rob
- 12:00Speaker 1: Blas's ground ball to the shortstop who fumbled it and
- 12:03Speaker 1: he's on his knees. If that runners at second, he
- 12:06Speaker 1: might get the thirdy he ain't scorn. So who knows
- 12:09Speaker 1: that that game ends in ten innings and they might go.
- 12:11Speaker 2: To the eleventh.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Last night, Patrick Wisdom, first of all, I about ate
- 12:16Speaker 1: my TV when I saw Wisdom pinch hitting for Luke
- 12:19Speaker 1: Rayley in the seventh inning. And then it turns out
- 12:22Speaker 1: that Josh Naylor backspasms on the home run. He might
- 12:25Speaker 1: have gotten the back spasms, Chris, I don't if you're
- 12:27Speaker 1: watching the game when as he was rounding second, he
- 12:29Speaker 1: turned to the center field bleacher area and put up
- 12:32Speaker 1: six fingers.
- 12:33Speaker 2: He actually was turning.
- 12:34Speaker 1: In the opposite direction of how he was jogging, And
- 12:37Speaker 1: I thought to myself as I saw the cameras picked
- 12:39Speaker 1: that up, that's peculiar. And that might have been where
- 12:42Speaker 1: he got the back spasms. Anyway, that's why Patrick Wisdom
- 12:46Speaker 1: came in the game to play first base, and they
- 12:48Speaker 1: did a double switch and brought Roeblas in the right
- 12:50Speaker 1: field for Raley. And yeah, I know, give me the
- 12:52Speaker 1: numbers on RALEI hitting one thirty four. Would you rather
- 12:54Speaker 1: have Luke Rayley in a game tied late or Patrick Wisdom?
- 12:58Speaker 2: Simple?
- 12:59Speaker 1: Really, don't give me the numbers. Thing, don't give me
- 13:01Speaker 1: the numbers. Really against he barely gets a chance to
- 13:04Speaker 1: hit against left dders. There's so handedness with replacing him.
- 13:07Speaker 1: But okay, so Wisdom comes in because Naylor's hurt, Wisdom's
- 13:11Speaker 1: I said, watch this, Wisdom's gonna come up with the
- 13:13Speaker 1: game on the line. Raley's spot's gonna come up with
- 13:15Speaker 1: the game sure enough. Tenth thenning runner at second and
- 13:19Speaker 1: Wisdom is trying to hit the ball over the space needle.
- 13:22Speaker 1: I mean he is his head's pulling out. Remember I
- 13:25Speaker 1: tell you the whites in the eyes of the third
- 13:26Speaker 1: base coach. He used to tell my high school players
- 13:29Speaker 1: you could see into his soul from the third base
- 13:32Speaker 1: coaches box because of how far he was pulling his
- 13:34Speaker 1: head out. Oh you need is a single there, and
- 13:36Speaker 1: he's trying to hit it over the space needle.
- 13:39Speaker 2: He strikes out.
- 13:41Speaker 1: But in doing so, did you notice what the Mets reliever,
- 13:44Speaker 1: I don't know what he was, Aj Minter. He did
- 13:48Speaker 1: two step offs and look backs of Randy Roseren at
- 13:50Speaker 1: a second base Roseen is not running there, No way
- 13:54Speaker 1: is he running to third with nobody out as the
- 13:57Speaker 1: ghost runner. Yet when Aj Mentor his second time he
- 14:01Speaker 1: stepped off. Remember now the Major League Baseball speeding up
- 14:04Speaker 1: the game rules now is that a pitcher cannot disengage
- 14:07Speaker 1: twice more than twice in the same at bat. So
- 14:10Speaker 1: once Mintor stepped off a second time, a rose Arena
- 14:13Speaker 1: knew he couldn't pick him off.
- 14:15Speaker 2: So first move to the plate.
- 14:16Speaker 1: There goes a ros Arena. He wasn't gonna steal that base.
- 14:19Speaker 1: But now after Minter stepped off twice, he's sure as
- 14:21Speaker 1: hell did, and that got a Rose arena to third.
- 14:24Speaker 1: Mintor stepping off twice got a Rose arena to steal
- 14:28Speaker 1: the base he wasn't gonna steal, and that's how he
- 14:30Speaker 1: scored because that little PLoP job by Cole Young would
- 14:33Speaker 1: not have scored him from second either broken bat flair
- 14:37Speaker 1: into short left field rose arena would have held. They
- 14:40Speaker 1: would have been first and third, one out, and who
- 14:41Speaker 1: knows what happens they go to Perhaps I'm with thinning again,
- 14:45Speaker 1: But because Minter allowed a Rose arena to steal third,
- 14:49Speaker 1: the little flair scores the winning run in the Marigine
- 14:51Speaker 1: have seven wins in a row. So that's the merit.
- 14:53Speaker 1: That's the Mets, last place team helping out the Mariners.
- 14:58Speaker 1: Trying to get cute there. What the hell was he?
- 15:00Speaker 3: Thank goodness to have bad teams in Major League Baseball.
- 15:03Speaker 3: It just makes it that much better for this team
- 15:05Speaker 3: to go on a run and stack some wins here
- 15:07Speaker 3: and hopefully have a commanding lead over the Al West.
- 15:11Speaker 3: And then with that being said, they feel good and
- 15:14Speaker 3: they go up against another decent to good team and
- 15:17Speaker 3: maybe you see some of the things that they struggle
- 15:19Speaker 3: with earlier on in the season, that transforms and they
- 15:22Speaker 3: are a better unit. Not to mention, a couple guys
- 15:25Speaker 3: are going to come back from injury, so that's going
- 15:27Speaker 3: to be huge as well.
- 15:29Speaker 2: Not to mention a lot of those teams are inside
- 15:30Speaker 2: the manners A lot of those bad teams are inside
- 15:32Speaker 2: the manners division. That helps too. Four nine, four to
- 15:36Speaker 2: five to one.
- 15:36Speaker 1: You're feeling on Cole Young as the best all around
- 15:39Speaker 1: Mariners player, fielding, base running, situational, hitting, pitches outside. PLoP
- 15:45Speaker 1: the ball of the opposite field. I mean, that's all
- 15:47Speaker 1: you gotta do with the runner a third and less
- 15:48Speaker 1: than two outs. Just put it to the opposite field,
- 15:50Speaker 1: hit it where it's pitched, don't need to pull it.
- 15:53Speaker 1: He didn't try to hit the mercer island, which would
- 15:55Speaker 1: rolled up. He would either miss it or roll it
- 15:56Speaker 1: over to second with the infield in ros there, any
- 15:59Speaker 1: went in to score, YadA, YadA. Opposite field pitched outside.
- 16:04Speaker 1: Just lay your bet out there poking in the left field.
- 16:07Speaker 1: Game over four nine four five one. My summation at
- 16:12Speaker 1: Cole Young at twenty two years old is the Bearner's
- 16:14Speaker 1: best all around player right now. Your opinions on that
- 16:17Speaker 1: will read that back at eleven thirty nep. Next, what
- 16:22Speaker 1: are the Seahawks doing fourteen million a year for Derek Hall.
- 16:26Speaker 1: There's a method behind that. There's a big reason why.
- 16:28Speaker 1: I'll explain that next eleven o'clock. Luke Arkins Mariners consickly
- 16:31Speaker 1: our newsletter talking about the Raging MS on ninety three
- 16:34Speaker 1: point three kJ RFM.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Welcome back to the Greg Belt Show with Christopher Kidd.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Live on ninety three eight point three k j RFM.
- 16:56Speaker 1: Happy Tuesday, June, second to you. June is off to
- 16:59Speaker 1: a roaring start here sports wise in Seattle. More news today,
- 17:03Speaker 1: the Seahawks have an agreement on a three year contract
- 17:08Speaker 1: extension with outside linebacker Boy Mafey. Forty two million for
- 17:11Speaker 1: three years, twenty one million a half of that guaranteed. Okay,
- 17:18Speaker 1: so what's the play here? Well, it's obvious they chose
- 17:22Speaker 1: Derek Hall, one year younger over Boy mafi They let
- 17:27Speaker 1: Mafey's rookie contract play out expire with the Super Bowl
- 17:30Speaker 1: in February, he left the deal of Cincinnati for twenty
- 17:33Speaker 1: million dollars per year. Now they get Derek Hall, a
- 17:40Speaker 1: year younger, for fourteen million a year for three years
- 17:43Speaker 1: to contract through twenty twenty nine. Of course, the Bengals
- 17:47Speaker 1: massively overpaid for Boy Mafey. They just lost Trey Hendickson.
- 17:50Speaker 1: They needed a pass rusher. The top one that they
- 17:52Speaker 1: fought left in free agency at the time in mid
- 17:54Speaker 1: to late March mid March was Boy Mofay. This Seahawks
- 18:00Speaker 1: saw Mafe twenty seven years old, as someone who they
- 18:05Speaker 1: didn't think was as stout a run stopper as is
- 18:07Speaker 1: Derek Hall, so they couldn't play him every down or
- 18:10Speaker 1: didn't felt a little bit worried about doing so, and
- 18:14Speaker 1: thought teams might counter by running at him. Derek Hall,
- 18:17Speaker 1: Mike McDonald loves his all around game and how strong
- 18:21Speaker 1: he is for his size and speed, and they feel
- 18:25Speaker 1: more apt to put him at every down as an
- 18:27Speaker 1: edge guy. So the guy you're going to play more
- 18:31Speaker 1: stays the guy that you thought could become a situational
- 18:34Speaker 1: guy that maybe wouldn't stop the run as well, leaves
- 18:37Speaker 1: for more money. Here's another thing, Chris, this is something
- 18:41Speaker 1: of a hometown discount. Let's face it. The agents for
- 18:45Speaker 1: Derek Hall could easily say, wait a minute, I played
- 18:48Speaker 1: with Boy Mafy. I played better than Boy Mafey. I
- 18:51Speaker 1: played more and more downs th Boy Mafy run and
- 18:54Speaker 1: pass and he got twenty million from Cincinnati, Why are
- 18:57Speaker 1: you giving me fourteen? They could have protracted this and
- 19:00Speaker 1: used the comp of Boy MafA and comps are how
- 19:03Speaker 1: NFL contracts get done all the time.
- 19:05Speaker 3: And you know what I would have said, if I
- 19:06Speaker 3: was John Schneider, You're not our number one guy, right,
- 19:09Speaker 3: Boy Mafe is the number one guy in Cincinnati?
- 19:12Speaker 2: Now right? You hear a call? Is not you want
- 19:14Speaker 2: to go to Cincinnati go eat some Skyline chili? Sure? Yes?
- 19:17Speaker 2: Or do you want to stay here and win Super Bowls?
- 19:19Speaker 2: The culture that.
- 19:20Speaker 1: Mike McDonald has said has become an attraction to keep players.
- 19:24Speaker 1: This is another example of that. Derek Hall made the choice. Yeah,
- 19:28Speaker 1: I could have not taken this offer for fourteen million
- 19:32Speaker 1: a year and held out to market value toward Boy MafA,
- 19:35Speaker 1: use him as a comp and free agency next spring,
- 19:37Speaker 1: perhaps get close to twenty million with a salary cap
- 19:41Speaker 1: going up next year over this year. But he said,
- 19:44Speaker 1: you know what, they love me here. To Chris's point,
- 19:47Speaker 1: I'm their number one outside linebacker. They love me here.
- 19:51Speaker 1: I'll take the fourteen million and be happy that I'm
- 19:53Speaker 1: signed to twenty twenty nine on a team that just
- 19:55Speaker 1: won the Super Bowls, trying to run it forward.
- 19:57Speaker 2: As Mike McDonald said last week, culture does that.
- 20:01Speaker 1: And guys that want to come back into a locker room,
- 20:03Speaker 1: and guys that want to show up for voluntary offseason
- 20:08Speaker 1: weight training in April, which is what happened last month
- 20:12Speaker 1: and month and a half ago. That's what culture buys.
- 20:16Speaker 1: It buys you players who want to be here. And
- 20:18Speaker 1: money isn't always everything. Now, fourteen million versus twenty million, Yeah,
- 20:22Speaker 1: Joe Cabby driving around Seattle right now, was going, I'd
- 20:24Speaker 1: take the fourteen man.
- 20:25Speaker 2: I don't think that I'm being undersold at fourteen. But again,
- 20:28Speaker 2: the NFL, on Pro Sports, the agent's.
- 20:31Speaker 1: Game, the contract game is comps and the comp on
- 20:36Speaker 1: Boy Mafe for Derek Hall would have be an easy
- 20:38Speaker 1: one to make with for his agents and for him,
- 20:41Speaker 1: but he said, no, I'm not gonna We're not gonna
- 20:43Speaker 1: play that game. Money doesn't quite mean every every everything.
- 20:46Speaker 1: I'll be happy as a former second round pick to
- 20:48Speaker 1: take fourteen million dollars a year and play for a
- 20:50Speaker 1: Super Bowl champion. That's what he's gonna do now. The
- 20:53Speaker 1: Seahawks are getting older on the edges for sure. Leonard
- 20:57Speaker 1: Williams thirty three de Marcus Loan it's thirty four, so
- 21:02Speaker 1: they still have restocking to do, But today is a
- 21:05Speaker 1: step toward one of their foundation players being Derek Hale
- 21:09Speaker 1: another one on defense. It's about to get paid again
- 21:11Speaker 1: in the same contract situation from the same draft year,
- 21:14Speaker 1: of course, as Devin Witherspoon. The reason that isn't done
- 21:18Speaker 1: yet is because he's going to be the highest paid
- 21:19Speaker 1: cornerback in football thirty one million plus Trent McDuffie the
- 21:23Speaker 1: Rams currently thirty one million a year, and that takes time.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Guaranteed money, how much when does that guaranteed money come do?
- 21:31Speaker 1: How much is guaranteed at signing. Those are all the
- 21:34Speaker 1: sticking points that make that a harder contract to get done.
- 21:38Speaker 1: The Jackson Smith and Jigbit Chris being done in March
- 21:40Speaker 1: was an anomaly, and John Schneider said that the relationship
- 21:44Speaker 1: he had with Smith and Jigbit the agent, how much
- 21:46Speaker 1: Smith and Jigba wanted to be here, all of that
- 21:48Speaker 1: contributed to that deal, a record deal for a wide receiver,
- 21:51Speaker 1: one hundred and sixty eight million dollars over four years,
- 21:53Speaker 1: one hundred and twenty three.
- 21:54Speaker 2: I believe, off.
- 21:55Speaker 1: The top of my head million guaranteed got done in March,
- 21:59Speaker 1: and that's surprise I think even John Schneider how easily
- 22:01Speaker 1: that got done. But that's usually the exception to those
- 22:04Speaker 1: kind of contracts, and that's why Devin Witherspoon's going to
- 22:07Speaker 1: get done probably at around the start of training camp.
- 22:10Speaker 2: Instead of now.
- 22:11Speaker 1: Much more straightforward if you count fourteen million dollars a
- 22:14Speaker 1: year and twenty one million guaranteed, straightforward, much more straightforward.
- 22:19Speaker 1: Deal with Derek Hall four nine, four to five one
- 22:22Speaker 1: on the Tacoma Dodge text line. How you feel about
- 22:24Speaker 1: Derek Hall being a foundation player of this team. I
- 22:27Speaker 1: don't know that we can argue this, Chris. He's a
- 22:30Speaker 1: foundation player on a number one ranked defense of a
- 22:32Speaker 1: Super Bowl champion.
- 22:33Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 22:34Speaker 3: I know people will probably wonder, well, he only had
- 22:36Speaker 3: four sacks. Well, you said something earlier about what Derek
- 22:40Speaker 3: Hall does and he plays the run really well. So
- 22:42Speaker 3: if you look at last season in terms of the
- 22:45Speaker 3: quality they were getting from two different players in Boy
- 22:48Speaker 3: Mafe who played roughly around five hundred and twenty snaps
- 22:51Speaker 3: and then you have Derek Hall who played around four
- 22:53Speaker 3: to twenty. Derek Hall had twenty one stops. So if
- 22:57Speaker 3: you guys don't know. A stop is basically at to
- 23:00Speaker 3: find the tackle over the location of the play results
- 23:02Speaker 3: in a win for the defense. So Boye Mafey had
- 23:06Speaker 3: thirty one or excuse me, twenty five of those, and
- 23:09Speaker 3: Boye Mafey had twenty one. Now, let's say you throw
- 23:13Speaker 3: one hundred more snaps to Derek Hall. I would guess
- 23:17Speaker 3: that number goes up and stops. He's gonna also get
- 23:19Speaker 3: pressure on the quarterback because he's really good at that.
- 23:21Speaker 3: Seven time MacDonald has talked about how quick he gets
- 23:24Speaker 3: off and is able to make just pressure the quarterback.
- 23:26Speaker 3: He's really good at that. He just doesn't always get
- 23:29Speaker 3: those sacks.
- 23:29Speaker 2: Seventeen percent pressure rates or sixteen point seven.
- 23:32Speaker 3: So I think the league average is what do you
- 23:34Speaker 3: know the league averages, it's.
- 23:36Speaker 2: He's about the league average. I want to say it's fourteen.
- 23:38Speaker 3: I was gonna guess that, but I'm going with you
- 23:40Speaker 3: on fourteen percent. So it's not more so what has
- 23:45Speaker 3: Derek Hall done lately. It's the projection of what he's
- 23:49Speaker 3: going to do through twenty twenty six, now all the
- 23:52Speaker 3: way twenty twenty nine, and the projection is he's gonna
- 23:55Speaker 3: play a lot better. He's going to get some of
- 23:57Speaker 3: those sacks and he's gonna continue to do with Mike
- 23:59Speaker 3: McDonald loves stopping the run. You can go back and
- 24:01Speaker 3: watch games where Derek Hall is just demolishing tight ends,
- 24:05Speaker 3: edge or offensive tackles, fullbacks and used check who he
- 24:10Speaker 3: just dominates every time they try to run the football
- 24:12Speaker 3: on his side, blows up used check or a tight end.
- 24:14Speaker 3: Kittle's making a stop for one or two yard game.
- 24:18Speaker 3: That's Derek Hall's DNA. Now, if you can just finish
- 24:20Speaker 3: on some of those sacks, I think he's This is
- 24:23Speaker 3: going to be a still contract for him because he's
- 24:25Speaker 3: going to get even more money that Twins twenty nine
- 24:27Speaker 3: s he's in, assuming that he plays at an even
- 24:30Speaker 3: better rate the next two three seasons.
- 24:32Speaker 1: He had six pressures, second on the team last year,
- 24:35Speaker 1: and he played forty six percent of the defensive snaps.
- 24:38Speaker 1: With Mafay Gohn, he's probably going to play more although
- 24:41Speaker 1: they were playing opposite sides, and with this contract now
- 24:43Speaker 1: he will probably play more than forty six percent of
- 24:45Speaker 1: the defensive snaps. And I to Chris's point about how
- 24:48Speaker 1: he plays the run, I think that alone is going
- 24:50Speaker 1: to get you more.
- 24:51Speaker 2: Time on the field.
- 24:53Speaker 1: In this division, as long as Kyle Shanahan and Sean
- 24:56Speaker 1: McVay are your opponents in the division, you have to
- 24:58Speaker 1: stop the run first, and if you don't, you're in trouble.
- 25:02Speaker 1: And part of the reason the Seahawks won the last
- 25:05Speaker 1: two games over the Rams were they able to stop
- 25:07Speaker 1: the run, especially.
- 25:09Speaker 2: Late in the game.
- 25:09Speaker 1: They didn't do it early in the game in the
- 25:11Speaker 1: regular season Thursday night matchup, but they did late to
- 25:14Speaker 1: allow them to get back. And remember the three or
- 25:16Speaker 1: four in a row three and outs they had in
- 25:17Speaker 1: the fourth quarter that allowed the Seahawks to rally from
- 25:20Speaker 1: sixteen down, and then in the NFC Championship game, they
- 25:22Speaker 1: bottled up the run game the Rams intended to play
- 25:25Speaker 1: to give Stafford a more.
- 25:26Speaker 2: Wide open pass game.
- 25:28Speaker 1: That's the key to beating San Francisco always has been
- 25:31Speaker 1: at Kyle Shanahan and they got us check and McCaffrey.
- 25:34Speaker 1: You got to stop the run first, and McDonald knows that,
- 25:37Speaker 1: and Derek Hall is a big reason why. And to
- 25:39Speaker 1: Chris's point, you can't quantify that with stats as well,
- 25:43Speaker 1: so people just see sack numbers. That's not why they're
- 25:46Speaker 1: paying Derek Hall fourteen million a year.
- 25:48Speaker 2: It's not.
- 25:49Speaker 1: I can tell you that they love his mentality, they
- 25:52Speaker 1: love how he practices. He's one of those DeMarcus Lawrence
- 25:55Speaker 1: guys who does everything the coaches asked, the preparation leader
- 25:58Speaker 1: into the meeting rooms. Again, a culture intangible, off the
- 26:02Speaker 1: field type of fit. And we don't talk about that
- 26:05Speaker 1: enough because you can't quantify that, but with this Seahawks
- 26:08Speaker 1: team in particular, that is a big deal. How you
- 26:11Speaker 1: fit in the overall program, how you fit in the
- 26:13Speaker 1: locker room, in the meeting rooms might mean more than
- 26:16Speaker 1: or at least as much as what you do on
- 26:18Speaker 1: the field.
- 26:19Speaker 2: Certainly to Mike McDonald and his teammates it does.
- 26:21Speaker 1: And that is why Derek Hall is getting fourteen million
- 26:24Speaker 1: dollars a year for the next three years after this one.
- 26:27Speaker 1: He's under contract now through twenty twenty nine. Devin Witherspoon
- 26:30Speaker 1: will be next, and I expect that to happen July
- 26:34Speaker 1: twenty fifth, plus or minus five days training camp is
- 26:37Speaker 1: probably gonna start around the twenty ninth or thirtieth reporting date,
- 26:41Speaker 1: and plus or minus five days on either side of that,
- 26:43Speaker 1: I'm expecting Devin Witherspoon to be paid thirty one million
- 26:46Speaker 1: dollars a year or more as the highest paid cornerback.
- 26:50Speaker 2: In the NFL.
- 26:50Speaker 1: That's the cost of doing business when you win a
- 26:52Speaker 1: Super Bowl championship, keep your hometown, homegrown, foundational guys up. Next,
- 26:57Speaker 1: Major League Baseball is doing something that the NFL owners
- 27:02Speaker 1: did when they split that player's union for the new
- 27:05Speaker 1: collective bargaining agreement. A lot of people think there's going
- 27:07Speaker 1: to be a lockout next spring training. They're on a
- 27:11Speaker 1: road to one. So the MLB owners are doing something
- 27:14Speaker 1: the NFL owners did.
- 27:15Speaker 2: I'll explain that next.
- 27:16Speaker 1: Luke Arkins at eleven o'clock on ninety three point three
- 27:18Speaker 1: kJ RFM.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Welcome back to the Greg Bell Show with Christopher k.
- 27:28Speaker 1: We're adding the rock portion here on ninety three point
- 27:30Speaker 1: three kJ r FM.
- 27:33Speaker 2: Do you see that shoe deal or apparel deal? That's
- 27:36Speaker 2: Steph Curry got.
- 27:37Speaker 1: I did not give me more leaning China's a brand,
- 27:43Speaker 1: sports apparel company ten year contract. Some people are saying
- 27:47Speaker 1: it's gonna be worth one point three billion dollars with
- 27:50Speaker 1: a B damn, depending on sales and whatnot. The Curry
- 27:56Speaker 1: brand is going to now globally expand. It will include
- 27:59Speaker 1: bast cake ball products, athlete leisure style, where in the
- 28:02Speaker 1: ability for Curry to sign male and female athletes under
- 28:05Speaker 1: his brand and a full golf line.
- 28:08Speaker 3: Okay, now yeah, I get yeah, him and golfer. He
- 28:12Speaker 3: is growing on that big time, and it's growing on him.
- 28:14Speaker 3: So yeah, okay, Wow, that's a big deal coming up.
- 28:18Speaker 1: Leaning plans to build Curry brand stores in the United
- 28:21Speaker 1: States and in China.
- 28:24Speaker 2: Again, I've seen it valued at one point three billion
- 28:27Speaker 2: dollars for an apparel deal ten years. That's probably beyond
- 28:33Speaker 2: what he's going to be playing for the Warriors or
- 28:35Speaker 2: in the NBA. Right, Oh, yeah, he's if that is old. Yeah,
- 28:39Speaker 2: he'll be outfitting college teams like Michael Jordan one of
- 28:42Speaker 2: these days. Major League Baseball.
- 28:44Speaker 1: Most people think that the baseball owners are going to
- 28:47Speaker 1: lock out players from spring training in twenty twenty seven.
- 28:51Speaker 1: Why because the colllective Barney agreement ends with the end
- 28:53Speaker 1: of this season. Last week we told you that the
- 28:58Speaker 1: owners are proposing a hard salary cap and a salary
- 29:01Speaker 1: floor to try to lessen the disparity between teams that
- 29:06Speaker 1: don't spend and just collect league revenue and lectury tax
- 29:09Speaker 1: revenues and teams like the Dodgers, who spend five hundred
- 29:12Speaker 1: and fifteen million dollars in teams like Florid to Marrowlin
- 29:15Speaker 1: and spent sixty nine So a salary cap and a
- 29:19Speaker 1: salary floor is what the owners are proposing. Of course,
- 29:22Speaker 1: the owners would love that limit their.
- 29:24Speaker 2: Costs by rule.
- 29:28Speaker 1: So yesterday the players union chief said, ain, no way,
- 29:33Speaker 1: we're putting a salary cap in this sport. They've never
- 29:35Speaker 1: had one, and he says they never will. And there's
- 29:38Speaker 1: your basic impass. All the other details into it, there's
- 29:41Speaker 1: your basic impass. And that's why people think there's going
- 29:44Speaker 1: to be a lockout.
- 29:45Speaker 2: So let's get.
- 29:47Speaker 1: Into what the owners are really proposing. The most important
- 29:52Speaker 1: deal is not the salary floor in the salary cap.
- 29:56Speaker 1: It's doubling the minimum salary to about one point five
- 29:59Speaker 1: million per year per player. Why is that the most
- 30:02Speaker 1: important thing of this owner's proposal because get this, forty
- 30:09Speaker 1: nine percent of salary dollars spent in Major League Baseball
- 30:12Speaker 1: go to the top one hundred earning players, the richest
- 30:15Speaker 1: of the rich. So that means the remaining players, eighty
- 30:18Speaker 1: nine percent of the union, make only fifty one percent
- 30:21Speaker 1: of all the money spent on salaries. That means eighty
- 30:23Speaker 1: nine percent of the union cares about what the minimum
- 30:25Speaker 1: salary is. Eighty nine percent of the players union will
- 30:28Speaker 1: notice if the minimum salary goes from seven hundred and
- 30:31Speaker 1: forty thousand to one point five million, double eighty nine
- 30:37Speaker 1: percent of the union. See the NFL did the same
- 30:41Speaker 1: thing in twenty twenty. The owners in twenty twenty in
- 30:43Speaker 1: the NFL proposed a twenty percent increase initially, then incrementally
- 30:46Speaker 1: more later in later years.
- 30:48Speaker 2: On the minimum salary.
- 30:50Speaker 1: Sixty percent of NFL players are at r near minimum salary.
- 30:55Speaker 1: So guess what happened about sixty percent voted for the
- 30:59Speaker 1: new CBA almost well, and then twenty five and then
- 31:03Speaker 1: thirty percent increases in the minimum salary. Players that used
- 31:07Speaker 1: to make three hundred four hundred thousand were suddenly making
- 31:10Speaker 1: a million million two, which is now up to minimum sum.
- 31:14Speaker 1: Minimum salary in the NFL goes up depending on how
- 31:16Speaker 1: many years you're in the league. So that new CBA
- 31:20Speaker 1: in the NFL, remember, it added a seventeenth regular season game,
- 31:23Speaker 1: which no veteran player wanted. It expanded the Thursday night games,
- 31:27Speaker 1: which no NFL player wanted. It expanded and maintained the power,
- 31:31Speaker 1: the wide power of Roger Goodell to punish without precedent,
- 31:35Speaker 1: anything outside of jurisprudence, outside of legal system, which no
- 31:39Speaker 1: veteran player wanted. It was really light on pension payments
- 31:44Speaker 1: and quality of life issues beyond play playing careers, which
- 31:47Speaker 1: no veteran player wanted. But because the majority of the
- 31:51Speaker 1: union cared about and were getting paid near minimum salary,
- 31:55Speaker 1: the majority of the union voted for the rays of
- 31:57Speaker 1: the minimum salary and that's how it passed. It passed
- 32:02Speaker 1: by sixty votes. Chris, there were two thousand players voted
- 32:05Speaker 1: in the union vote for the CBA in twenty twenty.
- 32:08Speaker 1: It passed by sixty votes because of that minimum salary
- 32:12Speaker 1: going up. And this is exactly the same playbook that
- 32:14Speaker 1: the Major League Baseball owners are going to try. Eighty
- 32:17Speaker 1: nine percent of the baseball players don't make the top
- 32:20Speaker 1: one hundred salaries. Eighty nine percent care what the minimum
- 32:23Speaker 1: salary is and if it goes up a year over year,
- 32:25Speaker 1: and that's what the Major League Baseball owners are proposing.
- 32:28Speaker 1: Will raise the minimum salary to appeal to the rank
- 32:30Speaker 1: and file in the union so we can get the
- 32:33Speaker 1: CBA passed. While the veteran players say, hell no, we're
- 32:36Speaker 1: not doing a salary cap. If you're a guy who
- 32:39Speaker 1: spent eight years in triple A, DOUBLEA, Single A riding buses,
- 32:44Speaker 1: you really don't care whether there's a salary cap. You
- 32:46Speaker 1: care whether you're going to make one point five million
- 32:48Speaker 1: or seven hundred thousand for making a major league team
- 32:51Speaker 1: after riding buses for eight years. And that's how the
- 32:54Speaker 1: Major League owners are going to try to get this done.
- 32:57Speaker 1: So expect here a round of players, union heads and
- 33:01Speaker 1: player reps from teams talking to teammates saying.
- 33:04Speaker 2: Don't go for this. I know it's a carrot.
- 33:08Speaker 1: It looks enticing for you at a young age in
- 33:10Speaker 1: your career to get a minimum salary doubled, but don't
- 33:14Speaker 1: go for this.
- 33:14Speaker 2: This is not good for the entire union.
- 33:16Speaker 1: The NFL players tried to do the same thing in
- 33:18Speaker 1: the rank and file near the minimum salary, didn't listen
- 33:21Speaker 1: to it, and now they're still complaining about the CBA,
- 33:25Speaker 1: and now there's going to be an eighteenth game.
- 33:28Speaker 2: So the MLB.
- 33:30Speaker 1: The point is that MLB just looked at the NFL
- 33:33Speaker 1: and said, how are we going to do this? The NFO,
- 33:35Speaker 1: of course, has a salary cap, and they're going to
- 33:37Speaker 1: try to split the unions vote in allegiances based on
- 33:40Speaker 1: the minimum salary raising in the proposal of minimum salary.
- 33:43Speaker 1: So all the other stuff you hear about salary cap,
- 33:46Speaker 1: salary floor and those numbers moving back and forth from
- 33:49Speaker 1: two hundred and fifty million one hundred and seventy some million.
- 33:52Speaker 2: That's not the big issue.
- 33:54Speaker 1: The big issue is raising the minimum salary and by
- 33:56Speaker 1: how much, And if they do, in fact, almost double it,
- 33:59Speaker 1: they're going to get a large percentage of the Major
- 34:02Speaker 1: League Baseball Players Union to vote for it. And that's
- 34:05Speaker 1: how a salary cap could get in. I don't know, Chris.
- 34:09Speaker 1: We'll see how much sway the veteran players, the haves
- 34:12Speaker 1: have over the relative have not Now they're not have
- 34:15Speaker 1: nots in baseball once they make it if you're a
- 34:16Speaker 1: major leaguer. But that stuff about minimum salary stuff resonates,
- 34:21Speaker 1: and they saw six years ago how that worked in
- 34:24Speaker 1: the NFL. I think there is going to be a lockout,
- 34:27Speaker 1: and I think Major League Baseball's union is much stronger
- 34:29Speaker 1: than the NFL's and they're going to hold fast and
- 34:31Speaker 1: say no way, we're not getting a salary cap.
- 34:33Speaker 2: How long does that lockout last? You think, well, that's it.
- 34:37Speaker 1: As soon as you lock out players, then you start saying,
- 34:40Speaker 1: all right, how many games are we willing to forego
- 34:42Speaker 1: in the regular season, six weeks of spring training. Those
- 34:46Speaker 1: six weeks there will be a lot of tough negotiation
- 34:49Speaker 1: and movement. But remember this is a sport that canceled
- 34:51Speaker 1: a World Series. That's how much the owners are willing
- 34:54Speaker 1: to go to the mat about this stuff. So I
- 34:59Speaker 1: could see this going into the regular season. I could
- 35:01Speaker 1: see it being less than one hundred and sixty two
- 35:03Speaker 1: game season next year.
- 35:04Speaker 2: Wow.
- 35:05Speaker 3: Could be a good thing for players rest wise. But yeah,
- 35:09Speaker 3: of course they don't get paid during those strikes. But
- 35:11Speaker 3: but yes, if the players are locked out.
- 35:15Speaker 1: Not a strike, that's a whole different deal and labor
- 35:18Speaker 1: and all of that. But suffice to say that they're
- 35:22Speaker 1: trying to split the union. And they'll never call it that,
- 35:27Speaker 1: but that is effectively exactly what the NFL owners did.
- 35:29Speaker 2: We'll see what happens.
- 35:31Speaker 1: And I hate to bring it up in the middle
- 35:33Speaker 1: of a seven game winning streak for the first place
- 35:34Speaker 1: team in town here.
- 35:35Speaker 2: But that's just on the horizon. So I'm just giving
- 35:38Speaker 2: you some context.
- 35:39Speaker 1: When you see these numbers and you see these stories
- 35:40Speaker 1: of negotiations, keep an eye on the minimum salary proposal,
- 35:46Speaker 1: and if it stays at potentially doubling it, you're gonna
- 35:50Speaker 1: have a lot, a lot, a lot like a majority
- 35:52Speaker 1: of the Major League Baseball Players Union voting for it.
- 35:55Speaker 1: Up next, Major League Baseball, Back on the field. Luke
- 35:58Speaker 1: arkins Marin is con sickly a newsletter. Former Navy officer.
- 36:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I let a Navy officer on our show every
- 36:03Speaker 2: once in a while.
- 36:04Speaker 1: A good friend of mine, he'll join us next to
- 36:05Speaker 1: talk about those raging first place MS on ninety three
- 36:07Speaker 1: point three kJ RFM
