Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: Hello, welcome back to Inside the Tape with Greg Cosell
- 0:12Speaker 1: on the Inside the Birds Network.
- 0:14Speaker 2: I am Jeff Mosher.
- 0:15Speaker 3: I'm with Adam Kaplan, my co-host, and of course, the
- 0:18Speaker 3: star of the show, it's Greg Cosell. He is the
- 0:21Speaker 3: best tape breakdown guy who's not working for an NFL team,
- 0:24Speaker 3: and he's with us every year and back for another
- 0:26Speaker 3: season here on Inside the Tape, and we're going to
- 0:29Speaker 3: do it like we've been doing it.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Offense one show, defense another show.
- 0:32Speaker 3: And Greg, there was a whole lot of intrigue about
- 0:36Speaker 3: the Eagles offense going into their week one game against
- 0:38Speaker 3: the Commanders, a 24-22 win. Everybody wanted to see what
- 0:41Speaker 3: the Sean Mannion offense was going to look like and
- 0:44Speaker 3: how different that would be. What was your overall film
- 0:48Speaker 3: takeaway from what the offense looked like?
- 0:53Speaker 4: You know, it's funny. Obviously, there was more under center.
- 0:56Speaker 4: There were 16 snaps under center. They only ran, I believe,
- 0:58Speaker 4: 52 or 53 offensive plays. So it was 30%, but,
- 1:05Speaker 4: you know, that's totally different. And there was motion, more
- 1:09Speaker 4: motion than we've normally seen. So I guess those are
- 1:13Speaker 4: sort of, you know, cosmetic differences. And I think we'll
- 1:18Speaker 4: see more under center as we go forward. I actually
- 1:22Speaker 4: thought that Jalen Hurts played really well in this game.
- 1:26Speaker 4: And we can go over, you know, we'll go over
- 1:28Speaker 4: some of that. Um, the run game was, you know,
- 1:31Speaker 4: obviously Barkley had the 42 yard run, but I didn't
- 1:34Speaker 4: think the run game was consistently good, but you know,
- 1:36Speaker 4: it was, it was there. Um, I'm, you know, I'm
- 1:39Speaker 4: really anxious to see the thing that stood out with
- 1:42Speaker 4: the run game was it was all zone except for
- 1:45Speaker 4: one play that was gap scheme. But other than that,
- 1:47Speaker 4: every single run was a zone run. Um, and it
- 1:51Speaker 4: was all mid zone and outside zone. Uh, so, you know,
- 1:54Speaker 4: that that's, but that's the foundation of this offense. So
- 1:58Speaker 4: that's not a surprise. So, yeah, those those are probably
- 2:01Speaker 4: differences than what we've seen in the past. But, you know,
- 2:04Speaker 4: it's funny watching the tape. I didn't come away going, oh,
- 2:06Speaker 4: my God, this is a totally different offense. It's so glaring.
- 2:10Speaker 4: I don't know what I'm looking at.
- 2:11Speaker 1: I think that was right.
- 2:14Speaker 2: I think that was Adam and I.
- 2:15Speaker 3: Our takeaway in the postgame show was despite all the
- 2:18Speaker 3: changes in the wrinkles. the reasons that Jalen Hurts really played,
- 2:22Speaker 3: it seemed like Jalen bailed them out out of some
- 2:25Speaker 3: poor protection plays. He made some great sideline throws that
- 2:28Speaker 3: we've seen. He made some great under duress throws. We
- 2:31Speaker 3: were still looking for Adam, what you'd say, like that
- 2:34Speaker 3: whole rhythm and harmony and timing and anticipation that, that
- 2:38Speaker 3: comes with this offense. But I think in Greg, you
- 2:41Speaker 3: can talk to it, but it seemed like Washington threw
- 2:43Speaker 3: them a little bit off kilter from that regard with their,
- 2:45Speaker 3: their multiple.
- 2:46Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:46Speaker 4: And again, I don't know if it was what Washington
- 2:48Speaker 4: did or, but, You know, I thought, look, they didn't
- 2:52Speaker 4: run a lot of plays by NFL standards. So Hurts
- 2:55Speaker 4: didn't have that many dropbacks. I mean, Barkley had, what,
- 2:58Speaker 4: 16 carries, I believe. You know, and I'm sure there
- 3:02Speaker 4: are a lot of fans who think, you know, that
- 3:03Speaker 4: the game was far too close for comfort. It's not
- 3:05Speaker 4: as if they put up 35. But yet I really
- 3:09Speaker 4: came away from the tape feeling that Jalen Hurts played
- 3:14Speaker 4: a really good game in terms of just the composure,
- 3:18Speaker 4: the poise, the way he handled it. He made some
- 3:20Speaker 4: really good throws. I, and we'll go over, I'm sure
- 3:24Speaker 4: a couple of them in detail, but it just, I
- 3:27Speaker 4: felt like he was in total command of the game.
- 3:30Speaker 4: And you mentioned a couple of, you know, he had
- 3:32Speaker 4: two scrambles on third down that resulted in first downs.
- 3:35Speaker 4: And certainly that one on that last touchdown drive was huge.
- 3:39Speaker 4: I mean, so I just thought he was very comfortable
- 3:43Speaker 4: and in command, you know, and, You know, you kind
- 3:48Speaker 4: of hit it, Jeff. You know, it's funny. You watch offense,
- 3:50Speaker 4: and I'm used to seeing, you know, pretty much every
- 3:52Speaker 4: team in the league. So sometimes I have to step
- 3:54Speaker 4: back and go, God, are they really doing something different
- 3:57Speaker 4: than a lot of teams are doing? It kind of,
- 3:58Speaker 4: you know, sometimes it just kind of looks like everybody else.
- 4:01Speaker 4: You know, teams are kind of moved in the direction
- 4:03Speaker 4: of putting the quarterback under center. I mean, I pulled
- 4:06Speaker 4: up stats just to see because I was curious, you know,
- 4:09Speaker 4: in terms of under center. And the Eagles, obviously, you know,
- 4:13Speaker 4: they had 30%, which for them is big. But, I mean,
- 4:15Speaker 4: you look at some teams. The Lions had 47 under
- 4:18Speaker 4: center plays. The Raiders, 39.
- 4:19Speaker 1: The Bears, 37.
- 4:19Speaker 4: The Niners, 37. The Ravens, 34. You know, the Jets 33,
- 4:25Speaker 4: the Jaguars 32. I mean, this is where the league
- 4:28Speaker 4: is going now. So when I sit and watch tape,
- 4:30Speaker 4: you know, yes, for the Eagles, is it something that's different? Absolutely.
- 4:35Speaker 4: But it didn't come across as, oh, my God, I'm
- 4:37Speaker 4: seeing the world changing in front of me. It's revolutionary.
- 4:39Speaker 4: You know what I mean? And Jeff, I sense you
- 4:42Speaker 4: agree based on what you just said. Yeah. Yes. Yeah.
- 4:46Speaker 6: I mean.
- 4:47Speaker 3: The watching the Eagles be under center at 30% because
- 4:50Speaker 3: that's the team I watched.
- 4:51Speaker 4: It was no question.
- 4:52Speaker 2: It's surprising.
- 4:54Speaker 3: But again, like it just felt like at the end
- 4:56Speaker 3: of the day, we were praising the Eagles for doing
- 4:58Speaker 3: things that they've been doing for a couple of years
- 5:00Speaker 3: in an entirely different offense.
- 5:02Speaker 2: And so that was what struck me.
- 5:04Speaker 3: I'm like, oh, yeah, big plays by Jalen Hurts in
- 5:06Speaker 3: the run game. Big plays by Jalen Hurts on the
- 5:09Speaker 3: sideline passes. a couple of nice throws under duress, and
- 5:13Speaker 3: the run game was, well, we'll get into it, not
- 5:15Speaker 3: so great again. So it felt like not that different.
- 5:18Speaker 4: I will say that I didn't feel like the pass
- 5:20Speaker 4: game with Hurts was random. I felt like he was
- 5:23Speaker 4: totally under control in this game. I felt like, again,
- 5:27Speaker 4: I don't want to sit here and make it seem
- 5:29Speaker 4: like all of a sudden now he's the best quarterback
- 5:32Speaker 4: I've ever seen, but I just felt like it just
- 5:36Speaker 4: seemed comfortable. I never felt like there were plays where
- 5:39Speaker 4: I didn't think he left any plays on the field,
- 5:42Speaker 4: by the way. And I didn't think there were times
- 5:44Speaker 4: that he broke down and you're wondering, why is he
- 5:46Speaker 4: breaking down? What's he doing? What's he looking at? I
- 5:49Speaker 4: didn't feel that happened in this game.
- 5:51Speaker 5: Because that was actually Jeff and I when we were
- 5:54Speaker 5: doing a postgame show because we didn't have access to
- 5:56Speaker 5: what the tape looked like. There were some plays where, okay,
- 5:58Speaker 5: why is he scrambling? Is it because the pocket broke down?
- 6:03Speaker 5: Or did he not like what he saw? Because you
- 6:05Speaker 5: don't know. You don't know until we get. And here's
- 6:08Speaker 5: the other thing we don't know. Just, I'm sorry.
- 6:11Speaker 4: We don't know because he does have movement ability, exactly
- 6:15Speaker 4: how he's coached. In other words, in this offense, it's
- 6:18Speaker 4: very choreographed and specific. So in other words, you're, you know,
- 6:22Speaker 4: and it's based on the concept of pure progression, which
- 6:24Speaker 4: is I think in a misunderstood term, the way it's
- 6:27Speaker 4: developed in the NFL. And we're not going to get
- 6:30Speaker 4: into everything about that. You know, that's maybe for another time,
- 6:33Speaker 4: but we don't know if he's coached to say, Hey,
- 6:36Speaker 4: if you drop back and the progression part is not
- 6:39Speaker 4: there in your mind, you can move because you're good
- 6:43Speaker 4: at it. So we don't know that obviously you're not coaching,
- 6:46Speaker 4: you know, um, Kirk cousins to do that because he
- 6:49Speaker 4: can't move. He's, he has to stay there and work
- 6:52Speaker 4: through every single thing. You don't know with Jalen, they
- 6:55Speaker 4: could be saying, Hey, if you feel like there's space,
- 6:59Speaker 4: I mean, for instance, you know, I just, I've been
- 7:01Speaker 4: watching the bills offense. Um, before we started doing this
- 7:04Speaker 4: and Josh Allen had the 21 yard touchdown run. And
- 7:06Speaker 4: I know exactly what play they called and it wasn't there.
- 7:10Speaker 4: The Texans took it away and then he looked for
- 7:12Speaker 4: the other things and it was all taken away.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Okay.
- 7:15Speaker 4: So he left the pocket because you're not just going
- 7:17Speaker 4: to stand there forever. You know, with Jalen, we don't
- 7:20Speaker 4: know if he's told, Hey, if you just don't feel
- 7:22Speaker 4: comfortable with what you're seeing within the, the immediate structure,
- 7:26Speaker 4: the immediate structure, you can take off. You know why?
- 7:29Speaker 4: Cause you're good at it.
- 7:32Speaker 2: How about the run game, Greg?
- 7:34Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 7:35Speaker 4: And the offensive line. It was, it was, I would
- 7:39Speaker 4: say it was up and down. I wouldn't say it
- 7:40Speaker 4: was horrendous. You know, the guy that's concerning and we
- 7:44Speaker 4: talked about this is Landon Dickerson, who really had a
- 7:46Speaker 4: poor game. And again, I don't know if, I don't
- 7:51Speaker 4: know if it's something that really concerns them to the
- 7:54Speaker 4: point that they have to think about a change or
- 7:57Speaker 4: if they just look at his week one and, you know,
- 8:00Speaker 4: a different offense where, He's required to do some things
- 8:03Speaker 4: that he hasn't been required to do as much in
- 8:06Speaker 4: the past. So I don't know how they see it.
- 8:09Speaker 4: But he really struggled. He stopped his feet a lot.
- 8:12Speaker 4: He just, you know, he did things you can't do.
- 8:16Speaker 4: And he knows how to play. Look, we know what
- 8:17Speaker 4: kind of player he's been. And he's tough as all
- 8:21Speaker 4: get out, as we know. So that's there's none of
- 8:23Speaker 4: that with him. You know, it's just the body might
- 8:26Speaker 4: be breaking down. The guy's had so many injuries going
- 8:28Speaker 4: back to college. And this is a run game that
- 8:31Speaker 4: demands movement. And as I said, there was only one
- 8:34Speaker 4: gap scheme run. Everything else was zone. And he struggled
- 8:39Speaker 4: in pass pro a lot, too. He just kept stopping
- 8:41Speaker 4: his feet. Yeah.
- 8:44Speaker 5: Greg, talking about the zone, and they did just about
- 8:47Speaker 5: all zone, and this is a big sea change for them.
- 8:49Speaker 6: How do you think this offensive line fits with the
- 8:51Speaker 6: zone scheme?
- 8:53Speaker 4: Overall, well. Because I thought Tyler Steen played very well.
- 8:56Speaker 3: Oh.
- 8:57Speaker 4: OK, don't forget, he's a former tackle. He's got good
- 8:59Speaker 4: movement ability. The concern with him was always just like
- 9:01Speaker 4: pure strength, you know, because but he can move. And
- 9:04Speaker 4: I thought he played well. Lane Johnson, you know, I
- 9:08Speaker 4: just don't know why he doesn't get the credit that
- 9:10Speaker 4: I mean, this guy and in past pro, I was
- 9:12Speaker 4: talking to my guys on the matchup show, watching that
- 9:14Speaker 4: tape and going like this guy just stones everybody. I mean,
- 9:17Speaker 4: it's ridiculous. I mean, this guy's one of the best
- 9:19Speaker 4: right tackles ever to play the game. And no one
- 9:21Speaker 4: talks about him like that. I mean, he's he's phenomenal.
- 9:25Speaker 4: My allot is a good athlete. He can move. Juergens,
- 9:28Speaker 4: that's the strength of his game. Although I think sometimes,
- 9:32Speaker 4: and I'm not an offensive line guru, so I could
- 9:34Speaker 4: be wrong, but I think sometimes his issue is he
- 9:36Speaker 4: takes bad angles to get to the second level. Not
- 9:39Speaker 4: that he's incapable because he's a good athlete, but I
- 9:42Speaker 4: think sometimes, you know, I've spoken to offensive line coaches.
- 9:46Speaker 4: Many of them teach it differently, but at the end
- 9:48Speaker 4: of the day, it's aiming point and angle of departure.
- 9:51Speaker 4: You know, that's what it is. And I think sometimes
- 9:53Speaker 4: he's just a little off. But that's again, you know,
- 9:57Speaker 4: the Duke Manny Weathers and the Brandon Thorns of the
- 9:59Speaker 4: world could tell me I'm wrong, and I would accept
- 10:01Speaker 4: it because they know more about O-line play than I do,
- 10:04Speaker 4: but that's just my sense. But it's not because he's unathletic.
- 10:07Speaker 6: One follow-up on that, Greg.
- 10:08Speaker 5: So you have the 42-yard run, which is obviously a
- 10:11Speaker 5: great run, but then the rest of them are 14
- 10:13Speaker 5: for 41.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Right.
- 10:15Speaker 6: Less than three yards a carry, which is obviously not
- 10:16Speaker 6: very good at all.
- 10:17Speaker 4: No, no.
- 10:19Speaker 5: What do you think the issue was as an overview?
- 10:23Speaker 4: I mean, there were times clearly when it wasn't blocked properly.
- 10:27Speaker 4: You know, and I think that's normally the issue. You know,
- 10:30Speaker 4: there were a couple of times blocks were missed. You know,
- 10:33Speaker 4: and Barkley's always been a back. And believe it or not,
- 10:36Speaker 4: and this got confirmed with someone I spoke to, I
- 10:39Speaker 4: thought Barkley looked a little stiff. And I don't know,
- 10:42Speaker 4: you know, he's also a guy that's getting older. He's
- 10:44Speaker 4: also a guy that's had injuries, you know, to his
- 10:47Speaker 4: lower half. I thought he looked a little stiff. And
- 10:50Speaker 4: when he looks stiff, what happens is, despite his size
- 10:53Speaker 4: and his pure power, he goes down. I've always felt
- 10:58Speaker 4: he would go down a little too easy for a
- 11:00Speaker 4: guy who was that strong. And I think, Jeff, you
- 11:01Speaker 4: would agree going back even to the Penn State days.
- 11:04Speaker 4: I mean, he's always been a big play guy and
- 11:06Speaker 4: he can always break an 80-odder. But, you know, the
- 11:08Speaker 4: sustaining element, you know, that's why the 2024 season was
- 11:13Speaker 4: so special because it seemed like he ran differently. You know,
- 11:17Speaker 4: but for the most part in his career, he's not
- 11:20Speaker 4: been a guy that gets three or four extra yards
- 11:24Speaker 4: based on extra, you know, that extra, I don't want
- 11:27Speaker 4: to say effort because it's not effort, but you know
- 11:28Speaker 4: what I mean, that just grind it out sort of,
- 11:31Speaker 4: you know. And I thought he went down, I don't
- 11:35Speaker 4: want to say easy, but he didn't get those extra
- 11:37Speaker 4: yards in this game. And I'm curious to see as
- 11:40Speaker 4: we go forward, but he looked a little stiff.
- 11:43Speaker 3: He's... He's also had 800 about touches in that range
- 11:49Speaker 3: since arriving to Philadelphia. So it wouldn't be surprising if
- 11:52Speaker 3: the body just didn't feel like it did when he
- 11:55Speaker 3: got here after that last season.
- 11:56Speaker 4: And I could be wrong, but I think you're going
- 11:58Speaker 4: to see less of him in third down situations because
- 12:01Speaker 4: he's not a good pass protector, as we saw again.
- 12:04Speaker 4: Everybody saw Stiles and, you know, run him over. But
- 12:07Speaker 4: we know he's not a great pass protector. Adam, you've
- 12:09Speaker 4: spoken about that for years with people you've spoken to,
- 12:12Speaker 4: you know. I remember you going back when they first
- 12:14Speaker 4: got him. You talked about that.
- 12:16Speaker 6: Well, it was out there, Greg, that he was. And
- 12:18Speaker 6: I was like, it's not true.
- 12:19Speaker 4: It's totally false. I mean, it's just not true.
- 12:23Speaker 5: And what I've learned, Greg, from talking to running back
- 12:25Speaker 5: coaches and offensive line coaches, that has very little to
- 12:27Speaker 5: do with how strong they are. It's about technique and
- 12:29Speaker 5: alignment and IDing pass rushers and understanding how to use
- 12:32Speaker 5: your body. And here's the problem, guys. Like Tank Bixby
- 12:36Speaker 5: is not a third down back and Will Shipley can be.
- 12:38Speaker 4: He's going to be because Will Shipley is a really
- 12:41Speaker 4: good football player who's just not big enough to be
- 12:44Speaker 4: a full-time back. But he's better. He can do that.
- 12:48Speaker 4: I don't want to say he's going to be great
- 12:50Speaker 4: at it. Believe me, we don't know. But he's a
- 12:52Speaker 4: complete type back. He's just not big enough to be
- 12:55Speaker 4: a full-time back. And maybe not quite good enough as well,
- 12:59Speaker 4: but he's a really good receiver. And I think he's
- 13:03Speaker 4: enough of a pass protector that you can put him
- 13:05Speaker 4: out there.
- 13:06Speaker 2: That's what brought us to you. Right. They put him
- 13:08Speaker 2: out there in the fourth quarter. That is correct.
- 13:11Speaker 3: Two consecutive reps when the game was pretty, pretty tight there.
- 13:14Speaker 4: Yeah, that is a good point.
- 13:17Speaker 3: Last thing, Greg, you know, they played the Eagles did
- 13:19Speaker 3: a decent amount, a lot more 11 personnel than we expect.
- 13:24Speaker 2: I think that might be.
- 13:25Speaker 3: A function of just what's going on with them at
- 13:26Speaker 3: tight end right now. They have one pass catching tight
- 13:29Speaker 3: end and really just two usable tight ends because I
- 13:31Speaker 3: don't think what Jenkins play one snap.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Right.
- 13:35Speaker 4: Yeah. I mean, obviously, Johnny Munn is he's an attached.
- 13:37Speaker 2: And he's just a blocker.
- 13:38Speaker 4: Yeah. And that's what he is. And he knows the
- 13:40Speaker 4: offense because he's been in that system, you know, almost
- 13:42Speaker 4: his entire career. So that's why he's here. And he's
- 13:46Speaker 4: he's a strong blocker from an attached tight end alignment.
- 13:48Speaker 4: And he can make those effective reach blocks on outside
- 13:51Speaker 4: zone concepts, you know. And so he can do that.
- 13:54Speaker 4: So I think my guess is that the personnel usage
- 13:58Speaker 4: and deployment will probably be somewhat game specific. I'm not
- 14:02Speaker 4: going to suggest all of a sudden the next game
- 14:04Speaker 4: they're going to play 60% 12 personnel. But I think
- 14:06Speaker 4: that'll change depending on the game, the way it plays out,
- 14:10Speaker 4: maybe the opponent. You know, I think there'll be games
- 14:12Speaker 4: where Munt plays a little more.
- 14:15Speaker 2: I would think so.
- 14:16Speaker 3: And then, you know, you've got the rookie, Mekhi Lemon,
- 14:19Speaker 3: they're trying to work in there. And I was just
- 14:22Speaker 3: surprised to see that much 11 personnel because we thought
- 14:25Speaker 3: there would be more 12. But like you said, it
- 14:27Speaker 3: might have been very game specific.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:30Speaker 4: Is Lemon now supposed to be totally healthy? Yeah.
- 14:33Speaker 6: I mean, he played a lot.
- 14:35Speaker 4: Oh, I know. Going back to watching him on tape
- 14:38Speaker 4: at USC, he just looks small on tape to me.
- 14:42Speaker 4: I know he's not super small, but he just looks small. Yeah.
- 14:47Speaker 6: Well, the separation thing, real quick, guys. The separation thing
- 14:50Speaker 6: has come up.
- 14:50Speaker 5: I know fans who they look at TV copy and
- 14:54Speaker 5: they'll see the preseason and go, what's wrong with him?
- 14:57Speaker 2: They look at USC.
- 14:57Speaker 6: Yeah, he's tough.
- 14:58Speaker 5: He had really good hands, but was the separation. Was
- 15:01Speaker 5: that an issue for you when you watched Lemon, the separation?
- 15:04Speaker 4: Well, I mean, I can only tell you, and I
- 15:06Speaker 4: don't know how his career is going to turn out.
- 15:08Speaker 4: I like him, you know, but I didn't think he
- 15:10Speaker 4: was a first round type player just watching his tape.
- 15:15Speaker 4: The player I compared him to was Khalil Shakir. That's
- 15:17Speaker 4: who I think he is. And which, by the way,
- 15:19Speaker 4: there's nothing wrong with that. Khalil Shakir is a nice pro.
- 15:22Speaker 4: And Khalil Shakir was a much later round pick, but
- 15:25Speaker 4: he's turned out to be a very nice player in
- 15:27Speaker 4: the league, but no one would say he's a top 10,
- 15:29Speaker 4: you know, wide receiver. You know, I know a lot
- 15:32Speaker 4: of people compare him to Amon Ross St. Brown. I
- 15:35Speaker 4: did not see that personally, which doesn't make me right
- 15:37Speaker 4: or wrong, but let's let him play. I just didn't
- 15:40Speaker 4: see that.

- 17:27Speaker 3: As I've gotten older, I've really tried to concentrate on
- 17:30Speaker 3: my physical health, my body, making sure I'm putting the
- 17:33Speaker 3: right things in and the healthiest things in. I've always
- 17:36Speaker 3: heard about creatine, but I wasn't really sure about using
- 17:39Speaker 3: creatine supplements until I did the research to find out
- 17:42Speaker 3: what it was really all about. That's when I found Momentous,
- 17:46Speaker 3: which created Signature Spec Creatine, their most advanced creatine ever,
- 17:51Speaker 3: setting a new standard for creatine quality. It's one of
- 17:55Speaker 3: the only creatines to be manufactured in a pharmaceutical facility
- 17:59Speaker 3: using reverse osmosis water purification and verified through an expanded
- 18:03Speaker 3: six-stage testing process with four independent agencies. They've improved the
- 18:08Speaker 3: product experience with ultra-fine powder that mixes effortlessly with no
- 18:14Speaker 3: grit or clumping. Hey, look, I like a good creatine
- 18:17Speaker 3: shake in the afternoon and it's got to taste good
- 18:20Speaker 3: and be smooth. The benefits of creatine are very real.
- 18:23Speaker 3: It supports strength, power, lean muscle growth, recovery, and even
- 18:27Speaker 3: improve cognitive performance. And as I get older, all of
- 18:30Speaker 3: those things are so much more important to me than
- 18:33Speaker 3: they used to be.
- 18:34Speaker 2: If you want to try.

- 18:51Speaker 2: This.com promo code birds.
- 18:54Speaker 3: All right, let's take a look at some clips. And
- 18:56Speaker 3: some of this is also to show what Washington was
- 18:59Speaker 3: doing to counteract what the Eagles were trying to do. Uh,
- 19:03Speaker 3: the first thing we're going to see is Greg, it's a, um,
- 19:08Speaker 3: It's when Jalen Hurts ran for six yards. And I
- 19:10Speaker 3: believe this is where we see Washington bring a double
- 19:13Speaker 3: A gap blitz. This is a, we talked about Durante
- 19:15Speaker 3: Jones and some of the concepts from learning under Brian
- 19:19Speaker 3: that he was going to bring.
- 19:20Speaker 2: So I'll let you set it up here.
- 19:22Speaker 4: Was this the third and five where he ran for six? Yes. Yeah. See,
- 19:26Speaker 4: it was clear to watching the tape that the focus
- 19:29Speaker 4: of the pressures by the commanders was in, in the
- 19:31Speaker 4: A gap. That's where they really focused their pressures. And
- 19:35Speaker 4: here's a good example. Third down. I believe Barkley's in
- 19:38Speaker 4: the game. So they're going to come from the inside.
- 19:41Speaker 4: And if you, you can run it because it's, there's not,
- 19:43Speaker 4: you know, and you can see that, you know, here's
- 19:46Speaker 4: where I almost felt here that. Jalen did not trust
- 19:51Speaker 4: that Barkley was going to pick this up. That's what
- 19:53Speaker 4: I felt. I don't know what's in Jalen's head. So
- 19:55Speaker 4: I don't want to say that's exactly what happened, but
- 19:58Speaker 4: that was my perception watching the play, because I think
- 20:01Speaker 4: that he could have taken a step to his right
- 20:03Speaker 4: and he could have hit for the first down.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Yes.
- 20:06Speaker 4: I'm not going to blame Jalen here because he knows
- 20:09Speaker 4: Barkley and we, we know Barkley is not a great
- 20:12Speaker 4: pass protector as he knows better than, than we know. So,
- 20:15Speaker 4: so I think, you know, he, and then they ran
- 20:18Speaker 4: a stunt on the other side. So when he moved
- 20:19Speaker 4: to his right, I think it was, it might've been
- 20:22Speaker 4: Louisville because they ran a stunt on, on, on his right,
- 20:25Speaker 4: the defense's left. And so then he saw that and
- 20:30Speaker 4: then he knew that he couldn't stop and settle that
- 20:32Speaker 4: he had to move. But, and you know, but, but
- 20:35Speaker 4: he can do this. I mean, like this is the
- 20:37Speaker 4: kind of thing I'm saying is I don't want to,
- 20:39Speaker 4: make this a negative Jalen play because, you know, I
- 20:43Speaker 4: think he– and you'll see it even more clearly from
- 20:45Speaker 4: this angle, Jeff, if you run it. You can see that.
- 20:48Speaker 4: I don't think he trusts it.
- 20:49Speaker 1: Right.
- 20:50Speaker 4: And then you see Lugo coming around on the stun.
- 20:52Speaker 4: So now he has to move. Now he has to move.
- 20:54Speaker 5: Yeah, that would have been hard. But to have the
- 20:57Speaker 5: ability to run your back pocket when you've got his
- 20:59Speaker 5: arm strength, that's a positive.
- 21:02Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 21:04Speaker 3: So– All right, Greg, here we have the play to
- 21:07Speaker 3: Dontavion Wick, 64 yards. As you noted, this was the
- 21:11Speaker 3: only snap, I believe, of 13 personnel.
- 21:13Speaker 2: It was. So this was TJ Jenkins' load appearance.
- 21:16Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm almost certain, because this is a flood concept,
- 21:20Speaker 4: and I'm almost certain that this play, when drawn up
- 21:23Speaker 4: and schemed, is designed to go to the intermediate outcut,
- 21:28Speaker 4: who's Goddard, by the way. And Goddard is open. But
- 21:30Speaker 4: I think what Jalen saw, and this is my sense,
- 21:32Speaker 4: if I'm correct, This was a big time play by
- 21:35Speaker 4: Jalen Hurts because I think what he sees is he
- 21:39Speaker 4: sees cross the safety and Sainer still the corner up top,
- 21:42Speaker 4: just not in a position to play the vertical route.
- 21:46Speaker 4: And I think he saw that and then he knew, hey,
- 21:49Speaker 4: I got a chance for the big one here. And
- 21:51Speaker 4: it's a great ball, by the way. So that's what
- 21:53Speaker 4: I think happened on this. You know, like I said,
- 21:55Speaker 4: could I be wrong?
- 21:57Speaker 1: Maybe.
- 21:57Speaker 4: But I think I'm not because I've seen this flood
- 22:01Speaker 4: concept a thousand times. And it's almost always designed for
- 22:05Speaker 4: the vertical route to be a clear route and for
- 22:08Speaker 4: the intermediate outcut to be the throw. Because you're working
- 22:12Speaker 4: off the underneath defender, who is number four here, Lou Vu.
- 22:15Speaker 4: So look at Goddard. I mean, you know, theoretically, Wicks
- 22:20Speaker 4: is meant to clear. Go a little further, Jeff. Yep.
- 22:23Speaker 3: By the way, before you finish, I can just confirm
- 22:26Speaker 3: with you you're correct, because Wicks did say that he
- 22:28Speaker 3: was supposed to be a clear out route on this.
- 22:30Speaker 2: Oh, he did?
- 22:31Speaker 4: Yes. Wow.
- 22:32Speaker 2: And that hurt.
- 22:32Speaker 3: But that you always have to pay attention, he said,
- 22:34Speaker 3: because Hertz will trust you if you go.
- 22:37Speaker 4: I mean, like I said, I've seen it so many times.
- 22:39Speaker 4: That's why the first thing I said when I saw
- 22:42Speaker 4: this was, this is not meant to go to Wix.
- 22:45Speaker 6: This is a big time read and throw by Jalen.
- 22:52Speaker 4: Look, the way I always talk to my guys on
- 22:54Speaker 4: the matchup show, you know, there are some quarterbacks that
- 22:57Speaker 4: when they do things, everybody gets super excited, okay, because
- 23:00Speaker 4: they're already considered great at whatever it is that they do.
- 23:03Speaker 4: So if another quarterback does it, you've got to say
- 23:05Speaker 4: the same thing. You know, this is a big-time play.
- 23:08Speaker 4: I mean, he saw– if you go back just a
- 23:10Speaker 4: little bit.
- 23:11Speaker 3: I was going to ask you, is it because he
- 23:12Speaker 3: saw that Sandra Stills' back was facing him?
- 23:15Speaker 4: And also– look at cross the safety's position he's facing
- 23:19Speaker 4: yes he can't turn and run now right and by
- 23:22Speaker 4: the way i talked about cross when we did the
- 23:24Speaker 4: pregame on friday i think you guys know just watching
- 23:27Speaker 4: this game how good a player cross is yes but
- 23:30Speaker 4: uh but he sees that that that saner stills got
- 23:34Speaker 4: his back turned he sees that cross is not in
- 23:37Speaker 4: position to play over the top and he decides to
- 23:40Speaker 4: go along and makes a This is a big-time play
- 23:43Speaker 4: mentally and physically. This is about as good as it gets.
- 23:45Speaker 5: Greg, we talked about in our pregame show that the
- 23:47Speaker 5: guy to go after is Sander Still. You never know,
- 23:50Speaker 5: but this is an example of it because there's a
- 23:53Speaker 5: belief that the guy's really better at nickel.
- 23:55Speaker 6: He's not a corner.
- 23:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 23:56Speaker 6: That's a great point.
- 23:57Speaker 4: Well, you know what? He played nickel in this game.
- 24:00Speaker 4: They played Robertson on the outside when they went to
- 24:02Speaker 4: their nickel.
- 24:03Speaker 5: When he got burned there, where was he lined up?
- 24:05Speaker 4: Well, that's because it was 13 personnel. He was on
- 24:07Speaker 4: the outside.
- 24:07Speaker 6: He was outside.
- 24:08Speaker 2: Yep.
- 24:09Speaker 4: And by the way, they knew that, Adam. That's why
- 24:11Speaker 4: they called it.
- 24:12Speaker 2: I mean, they knew at.
- 24:12Speaker 4: 13 he was going to play on the outside.
- 24:14Speaker 6: This stuff doesn't happen on a whim.
- 24:16Speaker 4: No.
- 24:18Speaker 6: And Jalen got the alert. He's like, we're going there.
- 24:20Speaker 4: We see him. Oh, so I'm really happy to hear
- 24:23Speaker 4: you say that, Jeff, because I was 99.9% certain that
- 24:26Speaker 4: the play was, that he was a clear out and
- 24:28Speaker 4: it was meant to go to Goddard.
- 24:31Speaker 2: To Goddard.
- 24:31Speaker 5: Yep.
- 24:32Speaker 2: All right. This is now the Wicks touchdown catch.
- 24:36Speaker 4: This is beautiful design to get the one on one.
- 24:39Speaker 2: Right.
- 24:40Speaker 4: Yeah. And then and, you know, I thought that, you know,
- 24:44Speaker 4: Wicks motion across the formation. There are 12 personnel. So
- 24:47Speaker 4: Sainer still playing outside again. So he ran across the formation.
- 24:51Speaker 4: They rushed five. Um, and, and the way they, they
- 24:54Speaker 4: ran the route inside of Wicks, it basically became one-on-one
- 24:58Speaker 4: versus Sanger. Still, they knew they were going to get
- 24:59Speaker 4: this again. This is not, this didn't just happen. They
- 25:03Speaker 4: knew they were going to get this based on the
- 25:04Speaker 4: 12 personnel and they got exactly what they wanted. And
- 25:08Speaker 4: Jalen made a great throw under pressure, a great throw.
- 25:12Speaker 4: And Wicks ran a great route.
- 25:13Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 25:14Speaker 3: And you could see Wicks has not made his break yet.
- 25:16Speaker 3: So there's a lot of, there's.
- 25:18Speaker 4: A lot of this in the past. I mean, this
- 25:20Speaker 4: is a big time NFL throw right here. Yep. Like
- 25:23Speaker 4: I said, if Patrick Mahomes did this, we'd be raving
- 25:26Speaker 4: about it. So when Jalen Hurts does it, you've got
- 25:28Speaker 4: to say this is a great throw.
- 25:30Speaker 2: Big throw.
- 25:31Speaker 5: And by the way, we mentioned in the pregame show
- 25:33Speaker 5: how Wicks and Hurts had really good chemistry in training camp.
- 25:36Speaker 5: You've seen that now. Because you never know. And you've
- 25:39Speaker 5: seen training camp may not happen. But we saw it
- 25:42Speaker 5: in week one. Very early in the game, which is interesting.
- 25:47Speaker 3: I added this angle to kind of focus in a
- 25:50Speaker 3: little bit on– the blocking and, and some of Landon
- 25:53Speaker 3: Dickerson who I guess he was playing there.
- 25:56Speaker 2: There's something in the middle there, Greg.
- 25:58Speaker 4: And he, yeah, it's a stunt.
- 26:00Speaker 2: And who got, he just looks, he just looks.
- 26:02Speaker 4: Slow footed to me in this game. I mean, you know,
- 26:05Speaker 4: I don't want to spend the show ripping Landon Dickerson.
- 26:06Speaker 4: Who's right. You know, I'm fearful that when he's 35,
- 26:09Speaker 4: he's going to have a tough time getting out of bed,
- 26:11Speaker 4: but you know, and the guy's been, he's the definition
- 26:15Speaker 4: I'm sure of, of, in the O-line fraternity of just
- 26:18Speaker 4: what it means to be an O-lineman because he doesn't
- 26:20Speaker 4: miss games. He gets out there every week, but you know,
- 26:23Speaker 4: you know, he's had so many injuries and they just
- 26:26Speaker 4: have to take their toll.
- 26:28Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure.
- 26:30Speaker 4: This is big time throw.
- 26:31Speaker 1: Nobody loves grilling more than me. It could be 30
- 26:33Speaker 1: degrees and I'll be out there grilling burgers and steaks.
- 26:37Speaker 1: But the one thing that I really can't stand is
- 26:39Speaker 1: losing my fish and my veggies because they just.
- 26:42Speaker 2: Can't grill properly.
- 26:43Speaker 1: Without falling through. That's why I've been using Hexclad's BBQ Collection.
- 26:48Speaker 1: It's bringing hybrid technology outdoors with products specifically designed to

- 27:20Speaker 1: Last week, I grilled the best surf and turf my style,

- 28:11Speaker 3: Hey, I'm somebody who likes to work out. I get
- 28:13Speaker 3: to the gym at least three times a week. I
- 28:15Speaker 3: try to focus on certain muscle groups, my arms, my legs.
- 28:18Speaker 3: And it used to be really frustrating for me to
- 28:21Speaker 3: find jeans that fit someone like myself who likes to
- 28:24Speaker 3: work out. Sometimes those jeans can be awkward and tight
- 28:27Speaker 3: and you're sitting in a chair and you're constantly pulling
- 28:30Speaker 3: at your jeans, trying to get them to fit you.
- 28:33Speaker 3: Sometimes it feels like you have to buy jeans that
- 28:35Speaker 3: make you choose between your waist or your thighs.
- 28:38Speaker 2: But thankfully, I found the perfect jean.
- 28:41Speaker 3: It's different from all other jean companies, especially for guys
- 28:45Speaker 3: with athletic builds. They actually let me move like a
- 28:48Speaker 3: normal human being. I can bend down and tie my shoes.
- 28:50Speaker 3: I can squat to pick up something without feeling restricted.
- 28:53Speaker 3: I can actually do a full squat, you know, bending
- 28:56Speaker 3: down to pick something up. without feeling like I'm about
- 28:59Speaker 3: to blow a scene. You know, the old standard jean sizing,
- 29:02Speaker 3: it wasn't designed to fit guys who squat or deadlift,
- 29:05Speaker 3: play sports, or just do anything that actually builds your legs,
- 29:08Speaker 3: but the Perfect Jeans is designed for just that, for
- 29:11Speaker 3: guys like me.
- 29:12Speaker 2: Perfect Jeans has six fits.
- 29:14Speaker 3: It includes the athletic fit, the slim, the thick, and
- 29:17Speaker 3: the thick thick, specifically built around the reality That legs
- 29:20Speaker 3: and waist don't always scale together. Right now, our listeners

- 29:45Speaker 4: Big time throw.
- 29:45Speaker 2: Excellent throw. All right, now we've got the Goddard touchdown.
- 29:49Speaker 3: So it's so funny because it came in the four-vert
- 29:52Speaker 3: concept that was such a polarizing play in the last
- 29:56Speaker 3: play of the game for them against the 49ers.
- 29:59Speaker 4: Yeah, well, this plays, this is really good. This is
- 30:04Speaker 4: really good, too. Because, you know, what you're going to
- 30:07Speaker 4: get here is, like you said, it's four birds. But
- 30:13Speaker 4: what I really liked about this play, I really like
- 30:16Speaker 4: the fact that they changed the picture on him. And
- 30:19Speaker 4: he read it immediately. Because if you go back to
- 30:21Speaker 4: the beginning, you know, this is classic Durante Jones, Brian
- 30:25Speaker 4: Flores stuff. They've got a pressure front. You don't know
- 30:28Speaker 4: what it's going to be. Is it going to be pressure?
- 30:30Speaker 4: Are they going to drop out? You don't know any
- 30:32Speaker 4: of this, you know, and obviously in the red zone,
- 30:34Speaker 4: everything is, is a whole, it's faster, more urgent. You
- 30:38Speaker 4: don't know. Right. So what they end up doing is
- 30:40Speaker 4: they end up dropping out and playing cover too. But
- 30:43Speaker 4: notice number 39 Reeves, look at his body position because he's,
- 30:47Speaker 4: he's opening as the middle hole defender to the wide
- 30:50Speaker 4: side of the field as he's taught. Okay. Because theoretically
- 30:54Speaker 4: you could argue lemons open too, but, Jalen and Lemons
- 30:59Speaker 4: in the slot to the other side, so he's running
- 31:01Speaker 4: the other vertical seam. But Jalen sees the body position
- 31:05Speaker 4: of Reeves and knows he can't get his body turned
- 31:09Speaker 4: to play Goddard. And look when he throws this. He
- 31:12Speaker 4: started his delivery right now. This is really good.
- 31:15Speaker 5: We talked about in the postgame the timing throw.
- 31:19Speaker 6: This is a great timing throw.
- 31:20Speaker 4: Yep. Right there. This is really good. All right.
- 31:27Speaker 3: This will now be– we're going to just show a
- 31:29Speaker 3: little bit of the things that Washington was doing up front,
- 31:31Speaker 3: a couple of sacks. This was the Sonny Styles sack.
- 31:36Speaker 3: I believe Saquon, as you said before, Greg, had a
- 31:39Speaker 3: tough time getting in the right position to stop him.
- 31:44Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, he just gets blown up. But, see,
- 31:47Speaker 4: look what he does. Do you have this from the
- 31:49Speaker 4: end zone as well?
- 31:51Speaker 2: I might. Hold on.
- 31:52Speaker 5: Yep.
- 31:55Speaker 4: See, you're going to see what Barkley does here. He
- 31:58Speaker 4: bends his head all the way down, so he loses
- 32:02Speaker 4: all his power. Look, look. Keep going. Yep. Even further. Look,
- 32:07Speaker 4: you have, in that position, you could be the strongest
- 32:10Speaker 4: man on earth, and you have no power.
- 32:13Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure.
- 32:15Speaker 4: For sure.
- 32:16Speaker 2: This one was the OA sack.
- 32:19Speaker 4: Yeah, this comes out of a loaded front, which every
- 32:21Speaker 4: team now, every defense in the league does. Loaded front
- 32:23Speaker 4: means you've got three defensive linemen to one side of
- 32:27Speaker 4: the center. Some teams then also bring a linebacker from
- 32:30Speaker 4: the other side. So they dictate a one-on-one matchup across
- 32:33Speaker 4: the board, what's called 5-0 protection. So yeah, this is,
- 32:37Speaker 4: and they stunt, they stunt it off this again. Now
- 32:40Speaker 4: this one is, is, you know, Jalen, I think felt
- 32:45Speaker 4: that the whole way, felt that there was going to
- 32:47Speaker 4: be pressure. So this. Yeah.
- 32:51Speaker 2: I mean, I thought he could have stepped up a
- 32:53Speaker 2: little bit.
- 32:54Speaker 4: He didn't step up. And I think he probably would
- 32:56Speaker 4: have looked to throw. But then he feels to his
- 32:59Speaker 4: front side. He feels that. Yeah. And the last thing
- 33:02Speaker 4: you want is to start your delivery and feel like
- 33:04Speaker 4: a guy can knock the ball away. For sure.
- 33:06Speaker 5: All right.
- 33:07Speaker 3: And then the last play that I want to– is
- 33:09Speaker 3: the Goddard touchdown. There was some– I guess some controversy.
- 33:12Speaker 3: Washington thought that Goddard was moving or maybe the left
- 33:15Speaker 3: side of the line was.
- 33:18Speaker 4: Well, Goddard's allowed to move there. He was moving laterally,
- 33:20Speaker 4: so it just.
- 33:20Speaker 2: Became a motion. Laterally, right.
- 33:21Speaker 4: Yep.
- 33:22Speaker 2: Right. But as long as nobody.
- 33:23Speaker 4: Else is moving there, Goddard's allowed to do that.
- 33:26Speaker 2: What about moving forward though, Greg, before the ball is
- 33:29Speaker 2: snapped or as the ball is snapped?
- 33:30Speaker 6: He can't do that, but he's not moving forward, is he? No,
- 33:31Speaker 6: but they can't have two guys in motion.
- 33:33Speaker 4: But I don't think two guys were. No, no, no.
- 33:35Speaker 6: I'm just saying that's why it's not.
- 33:38Speaker 2: No, but see, there is an angle.
- 33:40Speaker 3: I don't know if I add the other one where
- 33:42Speaker 3: he kind of hops up and down as the ball
- 33:44Speaker 3: is being snapped. So I think that might've been Washington's,
- 33:49Speaker 3: issue with it, but clearly they didn't play.
- 33:51Speaker 4: Yeah, you can tell some guys thought that the play
- 33:52Speaker 4: was going to be stopped.
- 33:54Speaker 2: Right.
- 33:54Speaker 5: And by the way, Jeff, there's some trust between Hurts
- 33:56Speaker 5: and Goddard there. You can just see it because Goddard
- 33:59Speaker 5: wasn't open yet. He was getting open.
- 34:00Speaker 6: He wasn't open yet.
- 34:01Speaker 4: Well, also, Dale knew that the guy who was playing Goddard,
- 34:04Speaker 4: I believe, was at Stiles, and he was on the
- 34:06Speaker 4: line of scrimmage. So he had to run back and,
- 34:09Speaker 4: you know, half turn his back to it. So he
- 34:10Speaker 4: was not in good position to play the in-breaker spot throw.
- 34:14Speaker 3: Gray throw so look at goddard now greg he's got
- 34:16Speaker 3: his left foot in the air a little bit because
- 34:18Speaker 3: he's still in the middle of that motion if that's
- 34:20Speaker 3: okay if that's okay right as the ball is snapped
- 34:23Speaker 3: though i just i saw a little bit of a
- 34:26Speaker 3: motion so i didn't know if that.
- 34:28Speaker 4: But he wasn't going forward he's allowed to move he's
- 34:31Speaker 4: a motion player he's allowed to move.
- 34:33Speaker 3: Yeah it was almost like he switched legs you know
- 34:36Speaker 3: what i'm saying like right leg forward yeah i guess
- 34:38Speaker 3: that's okay yeah right ball.
- 34:40Speaker 4: He was moving laterally he's in motion Yeah, I.
- 34:42Speaker 2: Can see why Washington was confused. But I think in
- 34:44Speaker 2: the end, you're right. There was nothing you can do. Hey,
- 34:47Speaker 2: Philly fans, game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic, long lines.

- 35:45Speaker 3: up You know, that was the underrated part was that
- 35:49Speaker 3: he caught the ball and then did a little pivot
- 35:51Speaker 3: and took it upfield.
- 35:52Speaker 4: I'll tell you what, he looked pretty spry for a
- 35:54Speaker 4: 31-year-old by then.
- 35:56Speaker 2: He sure did.
- 35:57Speaker 6: 31 years old, pretty good.
- 35:59Speaker 2: All right.
- 35:59Speaker 4: Like I said, and those clips show it, I thought
- 36:01Speaker 4: Jalen played really, really well. Like, I thought he saw
- 36:05Speaker 4: things right. I thought he was comfortable. There was no
- 36:08Speaker 4: sense of, oh, my God, let me get out of
- 36:09Speaker 4: here and run around when I don't need to. I
- 36:11Speaker 4: thought he played well. just a really strong, solid game.
- 36:17Speaker 4: And he always has it in his back pocket. Like,
- 36:19Speaker 4: and obviously we didn't show it, but I mean the,
- 36:22Speaker 4: that 22 yard scramble on third and long that, you know,
- 36:25Speaker 4: something might've been the biggest play in the game, you know,
- 36:27Speaker 4: where with the score and the situation at the time,
- 36:30Speaker 4: but you know, and Hey, and by the way, those
- 36:33Speaker 4: plays count and they mean something.
- 36:35Speaker 2: For sure.
- 36:36Speaker 6: All right.
- 36:36Speaker 2: Next episode, we do the Eagles defense.
- 36:38Speaker 3: This was a tape breakdown of the Eagles offense from
- 36:41Speaker 3: the very best Greg Cosell. For Greg Cosell and Adam Kaplan,
- 36:46Speaker 3: I'm Jeff Mosher. You've been watching Inside the Tape on
