Transcript
- 0:08Why, good morning, everybody.
- 0:10I woke up a little bit all inspired to share my thoughts.
- 0:18Let this play out.
- 0:19Let the rock get into you for a pinch.
- 0:20It's gonna fade.
- 0:22It's fading.
- 0:25Alright, everybody.
- 0:26Welcome back to the podcast.
- 0:28I am George Kushler, owner of GK Photography, and this podcast is called The Visual Historian because that is what I am to so many of my clients.
- 0:40I, you know, take imagery for everybody, from business to family to weddings, like you name it, I pretty much do it.
- 0:49But it dawned on me that everything I photograph is a moment in time.
- 0:53It's happening today.
- 0:54So tomorrow or 10 years from now, when you're looking at it, it's the past.
- 0:59We're capturing the past today.
- 1:02And um, I just thought that was really cool.
- 1:04You know, the visual historian is not not something I hear very often, but I believe in it so dearly.
- 1:10So today I am talking to both the budding photographer and the client.
- 1:17If you are the client that is getting ready to get down on one knee and provide that beautiful ring for your soulmate, this is the podcast for you.
- 1:31Here's the deal.
- 1:33Surprise engagements are stressful.
- 1:36They they they just are.
- 1:39I have found out and I have realized over my three decades of doing this that the more organized I am, the more I direct as the pro.
- 1:52The more I am the pro for my client and for myself, honestly, um, the better the experience is, the more um, the more the more I see easiness in our in our deals, in our in our sessions.
- 2:09Okay.
- 2:09And that could be anything from this, from you getting down on one knee and providing the ring, or you could be a commercial client coming in town, you're, you know, talking about setting up the convention center in a certain way.
- 2:22And my follow-up question is usually, hey, when are you in are you in town the day before or before that?
- 2:30Can we do a walkthrough?
- 2:31I'll come meet you.
- 2:32We can do a walkthrough, we can talk and visually see what you want to do.
- 2:37That way, when the day of the session comes, we're not introducing ourselves for the very first time, and then you're going all of this, and we all know day of the event is extremely stressful for all of us.
- 2:49You know, you, the client, most likely are providing a service for your client, whether it's the trade show, whether it's the you know industry that you're in, or whatever it is.
- 3:01My point is this stress, I find, is self-inflicted.
- 3:08Okay, you're usually stressed because you're not prepared, or you just have so much going on in your head that it's it's hard to let go of the entire list, and you can't start from A and just work through Z because you're worried about A through Z actually going to plan.
- 3:27So today I want to talk about that person getting engaged.
- 3:31Okay.
- 3:32Let me talk to you as if you just called me on the phone.
- 3:37All right.
- 3:37Ring ring, GK, I'm doing the ring.
- 3:41I'm getting done on one knee.
- 3:42I said, fantastic, John Smith.
- 3:45Um, where are you going to do this?
- 3:49Now, if he is inside a building somewhere, then time of day pretty much doesn't matter because you're dealing with inside lighting and we can go from there.
- 4:02If you're outside, this is where today's podcast is very important to both of you, the photographer and the person getting down on one knee.
- 4:10What I would say is, all right, John Smith, um, you want to do it by the lakefront at sunset.
- 4:20That is fantastic.
- 4:21Well, John Smith, let's do this.
- 4:23What day do you want to do this?
- 4:24I want to do it on Friday.
- 4:26All right, today's Monday.
- 4:28So, tomorrow, I need you to meet me at the lakefront where the sunset is gonna happen.
- 4:35Because you and I are gonna take five minutes.
- 4:38That's all I need is five minutes of your time and go over where I need you to stand when you go down on your knee.
- 4:45Which way is she facing you?
- 4:47Because I want the ring to be on my side.
- 4:51Okay.
- 4:52And then I could see her expression and I can get the sunset the way I want it.
- 4:58However, your surprise engagement is gonna be designed.
- 5:03Both of you need to do a quickie walkthrough.
- 5:07Excuse me, a quickie walkthrough.
- 5:10I don't have any water by me.
- 5:12Um, it's so important.
- 5:14And let me let me explain something to you.
- 5:15First of all, it reduces the nerves by 90%.
- 5:1990%.
- 5:20Like big time.
- 5:22Like the 10% that you're worried about is whether it's gonna rain or not.
- 5:25And then, you know, magically it did it does not rain, all is good.
- 5:29You know where your point is, you know where you're gonna go down on your knee, she or he is gonna be facing you, you know, the way I need you to.
- 5:38When I take the pictures, I can see that shimmering ring happening on my side, and life is good.
- 5:46All right.
- 5:47So I want you to back up for a second.
- 5:49If you were listening and you were visualizing what I'm saying, then it makes sense to you why this is so important.
- 5:58All right.
- 5:59When people get nervous and they don't do any kind of quickie walkthrough, and it's just, yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm gonna get you at the lakefront.
- 6:06Sure.
- 6:06Where are you?
- 6:07Uh-huh.
- 6:08Yeah, you buy that light?
- 6:09No, no, no.
- 6:10The other light, the blue one.
- 6:12Right.
- 6:12Okay.
- 6:12So you're just gonna go down there.
- 6:14Fantastic.
- 6:15I'll see you.
- 6:16What time are you doing this?
- 6:17I think around six.
- 6:19It's dark at 6 30, so let's let's make sure this is happening at 6.
- 6:24Because then it's gonna be perfect.
- 6:26Okay.
- 6:27If that's how you roll, then there's so many possibilities of error.
- 6:33Like so many.
- 6:36And until you've gone through a couple of these winging it like that, and you realize why am I not getting these amazing shots that I thought I would be getting?
- 6:48I mean, it's cute, it's their moment, but sometimes I miss the expression, I'm on the wrong side.
- 6:53People show up and get in the way.
- 6:56It's it's like things can happen, you know.
- 7:00If you're a wedding planner, this is what wedding planners stress about so much about wedding day.
- 7:05It's the simple fact that you can put something on paper down for an itinerary, but dear lord in heaven, you've got a hundred different hands in the mix, and you know the possibility of error is high, just in general, because things can happen.
- 7:23So when you bring it down to a smaller level of photographer and client, you you erased a lot of hands in in the process, okay?
- 7:33So I like to do a five-minute walkthrough.
- 7:38I can show you where I think is the best spot.
- 7:41I can give you the idea of look, I need you to go down, you need to make sure you're facing this way.
- 7:46So she's facing you.
- 7:48The ring will be on my side.
- 7:50Y'all do what you do.
- 7:52And they walk in they walk away after that walkthrough feeling so much better.
- 7:58Because now it's not guesswork, now it's not.
- 8:00I hope the photographer is here, I can't see him.
- 8:03I know that I know he's hiding, but it's all clear.
- 8:07It's all clear, you know?
- 8:09So, gentlemen, let me tell you something.
- 8:14If you're doing this solo, you need to get a friend involved of hers, okay?
- 8:22Make sure her nails are done, make sure she's dressed nice.
- 8:27Every woman in the world that gets engaged to is saying the same thing.
- 8:33When I pop out and they see me taking pictures, the first thing that goes through their head is, oh, thank god I had that manicure a couple days ago.
- 8:42Oh, thank God I'm wearing something cute.
- 8:44These images are forever, they're instantly gonna go on Instagram.
- 8:48These are the images I'm sharing with the world, my joy.
- 8:53So, dudes out there, okay?
- 8:57Talk to her best friend.
- 8:59Make sure she gets her nails done.
- 9:02Make sure y'all are doing something beforehand or after this that y'all on your way to that requires both of y'all to be a little dressed up, you know, just put together.
- 9:13That's all I'm saying.
- 9:14You know, if if you're the type where you're like, I don't care, jeans, shorts, and a white t-shirt, whatever, cool, good for you.
- 9:22But 99% of my female clients want to look good.
- 9:28Okay.
- 9:28So get their best friend involved.
- 9:32Obviously, you gotta ask the mom and the dad for her hand in marriage.
- 9:37Ask them if you don't know.
- 9:39How can I make sure these things are done?
- 9:42Who can make this happen?
- 9:43Maybe her aunt is her closest friend, and that's who you need to be talking to.
- 9:48But you see where I'm going this even your conversation with mom and dad is communication.
- 9:53It's still making sure you're doing things right, it's still going through the process in a way to where you're eliminating all of the negative possibilities happening because you're organized.
- 10:07And let me explain something to you.
- 10:08When you are organized and you ask people for help, for assistance, for making sure things go right, they have more respect for you because you care.
- 10:19That, my friend, is what being organized does for you, whether you're a business or you're just a regular person trying to propose to somebody and you want it to go well.
- 10:32Me as a business, being organized absolutely makes me a pro because I am guiding the conversation according to what I know is best on the job.
- 10:43You know, I love hearing people's ideas.
- 10:46I love trying to make their wishes come true, no matter what job I'm on or what type of job I'm on.
- 10:54You know?
- 10:54So when I take time out of my schedule to meet them a couple days before without any charging of fees, I'm not gonna charge for parking, none of that.
- 11:06The final experience is more important to me than you even know.
- 11:12You have no idea.
- 11:14I love my job so much.
- 11:17I want my clients happy.
- 11:18I like all my clients happy, and they are.
- 11:22They are because I've learned to go the extra mile.
- 11:24I've learned to ask the questions that normally weren't being asked, I've learned to see a copy of that itinerary so I can go over it and make sure it's gonna work according to what they think they want done.
- 11:35Control is not about being a bully, having control of the situation just makes you more professional.
- 11:45And if you're the client, when you call me, just call me, okay?
- 11:50Don't call nine different photographers, just call me, go to my website, gkphotography.com, hit the contact form.
- 11:59My cell number is everywhere.
- 12:01You can text me directly, or you can just call me.
- 12:06I am the easiest guy in New Orleans to work with.
- 12:10Um, but I learned how to have great experiences, and it comes with these extra steps.
- 12:17So, all right, that's it.
- 12:18That's kind of all I have for you today.
- 12:20I know it's a short podcast.
- 12:22I'm actually on my way to um go do something very important in my day, and I thought this was good knowledge for both the photographer and the client.
- 12:33So either one of you are, I know this probably pertained.
- 12:37If there's any one aspect of this podcast that helped you, I would love to know it.
- 12:43Hit me up in the the messages, however, you can get in touch with me.
- 12:47But it would do it would just be great if you're kind of like, hey, GK, that really helped me, man.
- 12:51Like, seriously, it helped my stress, the images came out great, whatever.
- 12:56Whatever, just let me know.
- 12:58Um, so look, I have another podcast coming for you uh in two days, and we're gonna talk about the death of customer service.
- 13:14And the reason why I'm gonna do this one is because it's it's gonna be so important of how this human race is moving forward with AI and online ordering.
- 13:27It's like we're things are just very different from five, from three, three to five years ago, not even talking about 10 years ago.
- 13:35So um, I am still blowing and going, man.
- 13:39You know, just because I've been doing this for this is my 32nd year, um, I have like another 20, 15 to 20, 18 to 20 years to go.
- 13:47I am in this, okay.
- 13:49I am young enough, think thank the Lord I'm young enough to have 32 years behind me, and I'm only in my early 50s.
- 13:57And you know, I grew up on technology, I grew up on computers, like when it was all new, and I love tech.
- 14:06I I love what we can do now.
- 14:08I'm I'm some things we're getting to.
- 14:09I'm surprised it took this freaking long, to be honest.
- 14:13But customer service is something, it's the human interaction of your business that's not going to go away.
- 14:22This is very important to me.
- 14:24So I'm gonna talk about it in the next podcast.
- 14:27And me as the client, when I go somewhere else, I'm judging businesses according to the customer service that I deliver to my people.
- 14:35And when you talk to somebody else outside, say it's a restaurant that you went to and it was not a great experience.
- 14:42And you're like, eh, maybe it was an off day.
- 14:45And you go again, and it's the same problems.
- 14:48Now it becomes a topic of conversation that you're talking to your friends about, and now those people who thought they were going to go there for their anniversary dinner aren't gonna go there.
- 14:57That right there, my friend, that was only two steps.
- 15:01That was two.
- 15:02That was only two steps.
- 15:03And I took away hundreds or thousands of dollars from that business.
- 15:08So if you don't think the human interaction and how you run your business, how you interact with other people is important, you're gonna be out of business before the end of the year.
- 15:20I don't care how big you are of a business, anybody can fall from grace.
- 15:27Okay?
- 15:28All right, I'm gonna uh get some outro rock on here.
- 15:32Here we go.
- 15:33Listen, if you're doing the down on the one knee thing this weekend or something, good luck.
