Transcript
- 0:00In a huge announcement from TikTok, the social media giant,
- 0:03they've unveiled a feature that permits users to post text only
- 0:08content. This marks a significant
- 0:10milestone for TikTok, opening up a whole new channel of
- 0:13communication and storytelling for its community of video
- 0:16makers. Now the strategic move widely
- 0:18regarded as a challenge directly to Elon Musk's rebranded social
- 0:23media venture, X, which is previously known as Twitter,
- 0:26places the Chinese app at the forefront of the dynamic digital
- 0:29world's evolution. And as of Monday, Tik Tok's
- 0:32creators have an additional string to their bow of content
- 0:34creation capabilities. The new feature allows creators
- 0:38to opt for a text only format in their posts.
- 0:41This pioneering change aligns perfectly with Tik Tok's
- 0:43missions to broaden options for creators and facilitate their
- 0:47creative process along the way. It provides them with more
- 0:50freedom and flexibility and how they share their ideas, a
- 0:54representative from TikTok said. Text posts are a game changing
- 0:58feature, expanding the boundaries of content creation
- 1:01for everyone at TikTok and they aim to give the written
- 1:05creativity, which was once confined to the margins and
- 1:09comments, captions and within the videos themselves.
- 1:12Now they have a dedicated space on the platform.
- 1:15In this modern era where video and image content predominantly
- 1:18command attention, Tik Tok's latest update is a testament to
- 1:22the company's recognition of the power and appeal of the written
- 1:24word. The platform has always been a
- 1:26powerhouse of creative content, with users leveraging its tools
- 1:30to share personal stories, choreograph dances, comedic
- 1:33skits, and much more. And the introduction of text
- 1:36posts only extends this creative range, facilitating new ways for
- 1:41users to share everything from poignant stories to recipes to
- 1:45poems. Now, Tik Tok's text post feature
- 1:49offers a simple and straightforward creation
- 1:51process. Users can navigate to the camera
- 1:53page, which previously offered photo and video content creation
- 1:57options. Alongside these options sticks a
- 2:00new text option, and selecting this directs the user to a
- 2:03dedicated text creation page where they can pour their
- 2:07thoughts and creativity into the text of their posts.
- 2:10Now, despite the textual focus, the new text posts are by number
- 2:14means, static or dull. On the post page, users can
- 2:17discover a host of enhancement options to make their text posts
- 2:20as dynamic or interactive as their video or photo posts.
- 2:24They can add sound to their text posts, a feature that keeps true
- 2:27to TikTok score experience and can elevate the post tone or the
- 2:31mood Location. Tagging and enabling comments
- 2:33and duets make the text posts interactive, while stickers and
- 2:37a variety of background colors and a visual element, making the
- 2:41text posts appealing and distinctive.
- 2:43And perhaps one of the best features of this new iteration
- 2:47is a direct challenge to Musk's X.
- 2:49It's the ability for text posts to include tags and hashtags.
- 2:54Users can tag other TikTok accounts, a valuable tool for
- 2:57collaborative content creation where to credit sources or
- 3:00inspiration. And the hashtags allow creators
- 3:03to connect their content with trending topics or threads,
- 3:06decreasing the reach and visibility within the broader
- 3:09TikTok community. TikTok, owned by Chinese
- 3:12multinational technology company Byte Dance, has been soaring in
- 3:16popularity across the globe, and in contrast, Musk's takeover of
- 3:20Twitter, now known as X in October, has been tumultuous.
- 3:23His 10 year has witnessed a wave of layoffs, A precipitous drop
- 3:27in advertising revenue, and a series of controversial changes
- 3:31to the platform's verification policy, stirring unease within
- 3:35the company's platform and the user base.
- 3:38Now the landscape of social media platforms is evolving and
- 3:41companies relentlessly innovate to retain their users and
- 3:45attract new ones. And the launch of Tik Tok's Text
- 3:48only Post feature may therefore come as a significant blow to
- 3:51Musk and X, as it gives TikTok a considerable edge in terms of
- 3:56user engagement and content diversity.
- 3:59However, the challenges that Musk faces do not end with
- 4:02TikTok. Meta, Facebook's parent company,
- 4:05has recently made its foray into the social media rivalry with a
- 4:09launch of Threads, a new platform that seems to have
- 4:11struck A chord with users worldwide.
- 4:14Now, the site reported a staggering 100 million user
- 4:17signups in its inaugural week, signaling A potentially
- 4:20disruptive player in the social media domain.
- 4:22Meanwhile, in the midst of these significant shifts, Musk
- 4:25initiated a new chapter for Twitter on Monday, rebranding it
- 4:29as X, complete with a fresh website domain and a new logo.
- 4:33And it's yet unclear what impact this rebranding will have on the
- 4:36platform's user base and its future growth.
- 4:39However, it certainly cements the notion that the world of
- 4:42social media is still in a state of flux, and these platforms
- 4:46must constantly innovate to stay relevant and competitive.
- 4:50Talks, text, post, feature, while seeming simple at first
- 4:53glance, could have far reaching implications for the platform in
- 4:56the social media landscape as a whole.
- 4:59By acknowledging and celebrating the power of the written word,
- 5:01TikTok may inspire a new wave of creators who prefer expressing
- 5:05themselves through text. And for the community of
- 5:08writers, poets, critics and thinkers who might have found
- 5:11the video centric nature of TikTok daunting or ill fitting
- 5:14to their mode of expression, this is a welcome change.
- 5:17And at the same time, for existing TikTok creators, the
- 5:19feature adds another layer to their content creation
- 5:22abilities. You can now complement the
- 5:24videos with written content, providing more context,
- 5:27reflections or narratives to their followers.
- 5:29This can potentially enhance the engagement and resonance of
- 5:32their content. Tik Tok's latest innovation
- 5:35reiterates its commitment to empowering creators and
- 5:38enhancing the user experience over there.
- 5:40As the platform steps into the textual content sphere, it
- 5:44remains to be seen how it will compete with X and Metis
- 5:49Threads. Now these innovations will
- 5:52continue to happen and these platforms will continue to
- 5:55compete for the foreseeable future.
- 5:57And the race is on for the most dominant social media platform
- 6:00on the planet. Thank you so much for listening
- 6:02to the show today. I appreciate all of you out
- 6:05there. So please, if you could take a

- 6:14yourselves at each other and I will see you in the next one.
