- 0:00Hey, welcome to the integrate this at tech podcast.
- 0:02I'm David burner joined today by Stevie Frank
- 0:06See be happy to have you on the podcast today.
- 0:08Oh my goodness. It's so exciting to be here So
- 0:10thank you so much for having me. I appreciate
- 0:12it Yeah, I think this is actually the first time
- 0:14we've met in person it has been but it feels
- 0:16like we know each other Yeah, and that's the
- 0:19magic of online right linkedin. Yeah everything.
- 0:21So how's is he going so far for you? Oh my gosh,
- 0:24it's going so well. It's always so big. So I
- 0:28always like to tell people, if you've never gone
- 0:30before, just take what you can and manage your
- 0:33time. Don't let other people take your time.
- 0:36Say yes to the things that bring you joy and
- 0:39try to keep it manageable in that way. So this
- 0:42morning I kind of made myself a little bit slower
- 0:44of a morning so I could kind of ease into the
- 0:46day. Because you can't go all day, every day,
- 0:49by any means. So I think keeping it a little
- 0:52bit manageable. But because I've been doing them,
- 0:54I've been doing these for a little while, I'm
- 0:56like, I'm great. I'm refreshed. I'm a morning
- 0:58person, so this works out great. Awesome. So
- 1:01we've got to ask you, how many years is this
- 1:03for you? For ISTE, I think this is only like
- 1:06four or five. I go every other year typically,
- 1:10so I find myself going to these conferences,
- 1:12so they're pretty big. And so I always like to
- 1:15go every other year and then I'll sprinkle in
- 1:17FETCs, TCAs, IdeaCon I went to a couple of times,
- 1:21and then a lot of local conferences in Indiana.
- 1:24Yeah, can you talk about that actually for a
- 1:25second? Because I see it all the time, like the
- 1:27Spark Summit. Yes. Yeah. Can you talk a little
- 1:29bit about that? Like, because how was that about
- 1:31a month ago or two months ago? Yeah, it was about
- 1:33a month ago. Yeah. OK. I'm like, wait, where
- 1:35am I at? But yes, no. So it's wonderful. Nadine
- 1:38Gilkeson, she puts it on and that's for her district.
- 1:40And she does such an amazing job with that. And
- 1:43Nadine and I were on NC is our ISTE affiliate
- 1:47board member convention that we put on conference
- 1:50for Indiana. And so she and I were board members
- 1:52on that together. We put together that conference
- 1:54too. So I really got to know her well and like
- 1:56the ins and outs of how she does the thing, she's
- 1:59phenomenal. And she's also an SD Featured Voice,
- 2:01so you should definitely check her out. But it
- 2:04was such a fun conference, good people, and Hoosiers,
- 2:08Indiana Hoosiers are just like good people, like
- 2:10good Midwestern people, so it's good. Yeah. We
- 2:13could relate. We're from Minnesota, so we know
- 2:15what's up. So you mentioned Nadine, but she's
- 2:19come up a couple times, actually, about having
- 2:21a podcast, because one of our questions for you
- 2:23is, like, who should we have on the podcast that
- 2:25we have yet? So that would be your... Your answer?
- 2:27Oh my gosh, I'm going to shoot her a text as
- 2:28soon as I leave here and be like, okay, you might
- 2:31be, you might be looped into this amazing group.
- 2:33So yes, absolutely. That would be awesome. Um,
- 2:36what do you, what do you feel like, um, educators,
- 2:39like what should, what is the thing that you
- 2:41hope they take away from a conference like this?
- 2:43I hope they just take away that we are truly
- 2:46better together and don't be afraid to say hi
- 2:50to somebody. reach out to somebody online like
- 2:53we are all in education and none of us have gotten
- 2:56into it to make the big bucks or to be famous
- 2:58like that's just we're we're here for kids we're
- 3:01here for students and that's my number one goal
- 3:04so there's sometimes people are like kind of
- 3:06nervous to even approach me and i'm like no no
- 3:08like i'm a tech coach in my school like i can't
- 3:11even fill a room in my own school district for
- 3:13pd sessions like i've you know so All of us are
- 3:16like that. So I would just have to say if you
- 3:19have a question, reach out to anybody. And I
- 3:22think it would be that would be worth your while,
- 3:24if you will. Yeah. And it's super refreshing
- 3:26to hear. And I know I can attest to that because
- 3:28like for us, we started reaching out to people
- 3:30and everybody is accessible and super kind, like
- 3:34really easy to talk to. So, yeah, don't be intimidated.
- 3:38You can go to people and talk to them. And so
- 3:40as far as. Looking at like your upcoming sessions.
- 3:44What can you preview for us a little bit? You
- 3:46have two sessions today Gosh, okay. So I have
- 3:48that's a hot question and I can't I'm not gonna
- 3:51look at my phone So I think I have four booth
- 3:53sessions today. Okay, and then I am volunteering
- 3:56at the Microsoft AI Innovation hallway experience
- 4:02that they have to end my day out today And then
- 4:05tomorrow I have I'm part of Adobe student ambassador
- 4:08pilot group. And so I'm on a panel for that tomorrow
- 4:11And that'll round out my ISTE experience. OK.
- 4:14And with the Adobe stuff, is there any projects
- 4:17and things that you want to highlight? Oh my
- 4:19gosh. So first of all, Adobe Community Professional
- 4:22Learning Network community, phenomenal. Like
- 4:24honestly, I get asked by other companies, they're
- 4:26like, OK, how is Adobe doing it? Because they're
- 4:29doing it well. They're just a great group of
- 4:32human beings. They were former educators. They
- 4:35get it. They reach out. But I'm a part of like
- 4:38a student. ambassador program and so I had like
- 4:41a group of pilot kiddos and we did all the things
- 4:43in Adobe and like they actually came and did
- 4:45a site visit so they actually people from New
- 4:48York City and Seattle like came to Indiana and
- 4:51came to visit the students and take a look at
- 4:53their work and showcase them and they make really
- 4:55big deals of kids and their creativity and their
- 4:58work and so to me that's been such an amazing
- 5:01community because like I'm like I want the spotlight
- 5:04to go to my students and they do a really good
- 5:06job at that. That's awesome. And we can we talk
- 5:09about is Zionsville. Yeah. Right. We talk about
- 5:11that for like, what can people expect when they
- 5:14walk into that school? Okay, well, first of all,
- 5:17I love Zinesville Community Schools. I was just
- 5:19on the shuttle on the way here and I'm like,
- 5:20I can talk to you all for days about Zinesville.
- 5:22So I live in the district that I work in. My
- 5:25kids go to the district I work in. And I mean,
- 5:28I'm like, we are in Zinesville until at least
- 5:30our youngest is 18. So that's my like, that's
- 5:32our goal. But it is such a human driven school
- 5:36district. And I've worked for three different
- 5:39school districts, and I had two different student
- 5:41teaching experiences. And this is like the only
- 5:43one. Like I honestly I'm like, I have found like
- 5:46the perfect district because they're truly human
- 5:48centric. One of the best examples, I think, is
- 5:52whenever they have, like, back -to -school breakfast
- 5:54for staff, the principals and administrators
- 5:56and superintendent are literally scooping your
- 5:59breakfast and putting it on your plate for you
- 6:01with, like, the hair nets and every... And I
- 6:03just... I don't know. I think that speaks volumes,
- 6:05and they're just... They care about the kids.
- 6:08And the parents know that. I mean, it's just...
- 6:11We haven't had a lot of noise, I think, that
- 6:13a lot of other districts have gone to because
- 6:14our community members and everybody knows, like,
- 6:17we're doing what's best for kids and we're raising...
- 6:19human beings first, and then making sure that
- 6:22they're academically sound as well. That's extremely
- 6:25important. But I don't know. I think I can't
- 6:28speak best about it. I could keep going. We can
- 6:30keep going. Our schools are like that, too. We're
- 6:32in rural areas. There's minimal resources. It's
- 6:36just making the most of what you've got and that
- 6:39kind of thing to serve the students. And I wanted
- 6:42to mention, too, I remember from the podcast
- 6:44that you did with us, probably a year ago now,
- 6:47honestly, it was the Indianapolis 500 project.
- 6:52They did. Can you talk about that again? Because
- 6:54I haven't forgot about it. Well, of course I
- 6:55did it again. Because part of the Indy 500, if
- 6:59you're an Indian, it's a big deal. So we had
- 7:01students create an animate to audio project inside
- 7:03of Adobe Express. And kids can use their voices.
- 7:06And then AI moves the mouth of whatever figure
- 7:09that the kids decide to be in. They can be an
- 7:11avocado. They can be a unicorn. They can be anything.
- 7:15But they turned themselves into AI race car drivers.
- 7:18And then they recorded everything that they had
- 7:20learned about their favorite race car. car driver
- 7:22in their voice into Adobe Express. And so then
- 7:25I did this with every single fifth grader. And
- 7:29so I had like a hundred, no, we had like nearly
- 7:31300 of these projects all in one area. And we
- 7:35were just like one quick pit stop along their
- 7:37reading or along their journey of Indy 500 day
- 7:40in fifth grade. So that was super fun. And that's
- 7:42always cool too, because you're like bringing
- 7:44local stuff or things that are relevant to students.
- 7:47It's like, well, we know about this. This is
- 7:49where we live, right? And it's like layered in
- 7:52with like rigor. So I think sometimes like when
- 7:53you see tech and I hate doing tech for tech's
- 7:56sake. I won't, I've actually. turned away coaching
- 7:58cycles because I was like, this isn't a good
- 8:00fit. And I was like, go, go get the kids in person
- 8:03and have them like, no tech, like, that's okay.
- 8:06And I think sometimes people think like, Oh,
- 8:09Stevie's all about tech, but like, My master's
- 8:11is in reading, so I've always been very curricular
- 8:15based. And so I think when we start to lead in
- 8:17with like, yes, that was like a cute prop, but
- 8:20no, it was like highly rigorous because we were
- 8:22one pit stop and the pit stops right before us,
- 8:25they were researching in the library of what
- 8:27their race car driver was. And then the next
- 8:29pit stop, they wrote a script. So like we have
- 8:31all of those components and then this was just
- 8:33their assessment. So if we did take a grade.
- 8:36So I don't know, I wanted to kind of call that
- 8:38out too, because... I know we're all feeling
- 8:40here at SD, like tech is kind of on fire. But
- 8:44I think when we can start having those meaningful
- 8:46conversations and highlighting how academically
- 8:49sound that these projects are, like we're really
- 8:51starting to move in transformational ways. Yeah,
- 8:53and it's a pretty common refrain too. Like as
- 8:55we were here, right, everybody echoes that same
- 8:58thing. It's like we're not just pushing tech
- 9:01to push tech. It's like the students come first.
- 9:04If tech helps with what your pedagogy is trying
- 9:08to accomplish, then great, and implement it that
- 9:11way, as opposed to just like, here's a computer,
- 9:13that kind of thing. I have one more question
- 9:17for you, and this is just about what kind of
- 9:19things do you have that you want to highlight
- 9:21that you have coming up? Conferences, potentially
- 9:25something with, we had... friend of the show,
- 9:28Manuel Herrera on. Is there anything that you're
- 9:31doing with him, maybe that you could give us
- 9:33a... I don't know. We don't know yet, but Manuel
- 9:36and I are working on a project and I love working
- 9:39with him. He's so fun. His creative brains are
- 9:42amazing. But yes, there are some things that
- 9:45are in the work with him. But honestly, what
- 9:47I'm looking forward to is... So I think it's
- 9:50also important that we find time to recharge
- 9:52when you're especially in the edtech space. So
- 9:54actually in two days, I am leaving for a two
- 9:57week vacation with my family and we are traveling
- 10:00the country of France. We are going all around
- 10:02the entire country. And that is I'm looking forward
- 10:04to filling my cup. And honestly, it's my last
- 10:08round. You probably won't see me again until
- 10:11after back to school, to be honest. Going off
- 10:14grid for a little bit. I am. I am. I'm still
- 10:16going to post to things, but like, yeah, this
- 10:18kind of rounds out my time. It'll be France related,
- 10:21it won't be like education. Definitely, so I'm
- 10:26excited to recharge. And then one other thing,
- 10:29where can people follow you, check out the work
- 10:31that you have on any of the websites you have?
- 10:33So can you just mention that too? I would love
- 10:35to so yes, so my website I post all of my presentation
- 10:38and all of my resources like again We in education
- 10:41aren't trying to like I'm not trying to make
- 10:42big bucks here But I do have all my resources
- 10:45on my website at Stevie Frank calm and then on
- 10:47Twitter. I'm at Stevie Frank 23 It will forever
- 10:50be Twitter. And then on LinkedIn, you can just
- 10:52look up Stevie Frank and I'm there too as well.
- 10:55So I have personal accounts on Instagram and
- 10:56Facebook, but you don't want to see pictures
- 10:58of my kids. That's for the personal side of me.
- 11:01But those are the two places that I post regularly
- 11:04on the professional work I do. Great. Well, make
- 11:07sure you follow Stevie. Go to the website and
- 11:10check out the Integrate This podcast as well.
- 11:12Stevie's been on there with the episode together.
- 11:15So Stevie, thanks. Well, thank you so much for
- 11:17having me. I appreciate it.
