- 1:42kind of hard to make a good detective program. Christmas show, The warmth
- 1:49of Christmas time is usually a pretty far cry from the usual plots of most
- 1:56detective programs, which I think is part of the reason why so many never
- 2:01fit a special. And it's possible, it really is possible for things to
- 2:07go wrong, for you to have a show that just seems goofy, or
- 2:13in really poor case, such as the first Johnny Dollar Christmas Special in nineteen
- 2:20forty nine. However, I must say that this is probably near the top
- 2:25my favorite detective program Christmas shows without actually departing too much from the normal setup.
- 2:34So let's go ahead and take a lesson. We're going to go back
- 2:37to December nineteenth of nineteen fifty five as we begin the Nick Shern Matter Parts
- 2:45one and two from Hollywood. It's time now for Johnny Dollar. Don welcome
- 2:57Johnny, Oh hi, Don, Thanks for the Chris was present. Well,
- 3:00just don't take out the cork near an open flames. Yeah, doesn't
- 3:04see you know anything about a guy named mel Pranker. Nothing good about him?
- 3:07Why got himself killed last night? Murdered? Franker was born to be
- 3:12murdered? Maybe so, but not at our expense. By holding one hundred
- 3:15thousand dollars policy on him. Wow, what was the beneficiary? Is a
- 3:20partner? Nick Shearn? Nick Shearn, you picked a fine pair of rats.
- 3:24Yeah, I know that. Now the New York police are holding Sharan,
- 3:29but they've got no evidence. Got down there and check it out for
- 3:32us, Johnny. If Nick did the killing, we're off any witnesses won
- 3:38apparently the head check girl in that nightclub of theirs. What's her story?
- 3:43I wish I knew she's disappeared. We gotta find her, Johnny before some
- 3:49of Nick's Houdlum's finder don Maybe they already have tonight and every weekday night.
- 4:01Bob Bailey, in the Transcribed Adventures of the Man with the Action Packed Expenser
- 4:05out America's Fabulous Freelance Insurance Investigator, Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. Expense accounts
- 4:21submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar to the Home Office Primutual Insurance Limit at Hartford,
- 4:27Connecticut. The following is the account of expenditures during my investigation of the
- 4:30Nick Shuran matter. Item one twenty two eighty transportation to New York tips and
- 4:35incidentals and taxi fair to the Office of Lieutenant Ed Rafferty Homicide Division. The
- 4:40man in charge of the case. Oh, hi you, Johnny, have
- 4:45you been not bad ed? How's the homicide business? Terrifor if you look
- 4:47at that teletype shoplifting, five complaints right in a row the week before Christmas.
- 4:53That's all we get. Shoplifters. Mel Pranker was in shoplifting. Oh
- 4:57you're working on a journey. Yeah, the insurance saying Nick Sharen's the beneficiary
- 5:01one hundred grand policy or you got a tough one boy. Sharon killed him,
- 5:05all right, but I don't think we're going to be able to stick
- 5:08him. Come on in the office. Hey, you know what that kid
- 5:12of mine wants for Christmas? Marilyn Monroe? Oh next year, Johnny.
- 5:15He's only ten, you know, go ahead, okay, nxs No,
- 5:20he want some motorbike. Can you tie that? Ten years old? And
- 5:24he says he needs a motorbike? Have it? Jay? Okay? Well,
- 5:28look, I know a franky representative here. I'll make you a good
- 5:30deal on one. And oh now forget that, Johnny. No, I
- 5:32was fourteen before I even had a pair of roller skates, and then I
- 5:35had to buy him misld. Yeah, kids are spoiled today. That's the
- 5:40half of what's wrong. With him. Ah, there's the pilon the case.
- 5:45What little we've got? Okay, how'd that happen? Ane? I
- 5:51mean, how do I think it happened? That's good enough for me.
- 5:55Melt Preiker and Nick Shern were both in the rackets for years, as you
- 5:59probably know. I've heard rumors. Well a while back they teamed up and
- 6:02opened a string of supper clubs. That's where Priker got it in their main
- 6:06club, the Chez Colette. Strictly legitimate, huh yeah, more or less.
- 6:12I guess they could afford to be the door they were making and arguing
- 6:15over. According to the word around, that's the reason for the killing the
- 6:18way you've seen. Sure, they figured if half was good, all to
- 6:23take could be twice as good. And the insurance on top of him.
- 6:27You're a fast one, Johnny. Anyhow, several people heard the shots about
- 6:30two thirty in the morning, it was right after the club closed, but
- 6:33none of them bothered to report it. The cleanup crew came in at three
- 6:38and found Praiker's body. He was lying in his office, shut twice gone
- 6:42on the floor beside him. No prince with his own gun, and it
- 6:46was kept there in his desk where was Nick Sharan? And they picked him
- 6:49up an hour later at another one of their clubs. The manager was with
- 6:54him and oh, Benny's stock now he was in a yeah, no trigger
- 6:58man for nixt mob and the old fifteen years overdue for hanging. That's our
- 7:02Benny. Anyhow, they both swear that Nick was there from one thirty on.
- 7:06What about a perfect test and positive clear to the elbow and you can
- 7:11throd out the window? What do you mean? Earlier that evening Nick spent
- 7:14two hours at a shooting gallery uptown hiring a pistols Ooh smart, he really
- 7:19planned for it, he really did. Without a witness. We haven't got
- 7:23a chance. I understand there was a witness, some girl who was mixed
- 7:27up in it. Easy, Johnny, you're talking to a rafferty mm hmm.
- 7:30So the girl's Irish. Miss Kathleen o'dad old country back three generations county
- 7:35killed there? Then? Naturally, she says, innocent as a newborn babe.
- 7:40Naturally, then how does she figure? A taxi driver knows her said
- 7:45that he saw her leave the club five minutes after the shots. She denied
- 7:48it, said she left his closing time. Well, now, in my
- 7:53book. She was lying, scared to talk, paralyzed and with plenty of
- 7:57reason. You know Sharan's reputation. What about the cab driver? Now I
- 8:01changed his story. He said it might have been some other girl. He
- 8:05oh no, no't tell me, ed, let me guess. Ah,
- 8:07that's right, these names O two. And I forgot to mention that Kathleen's
- 8:11pretty naturally. Anyhow, I let her go. I had too, and
- 8:16when I went around to talk to her this morning, she'd flown the coop.
- 8:20Any chance I'm a next boys grabbed her, I don't think so.
- 8:24It looked more like she came home packed in a hurry, took her kid
- 8:28and blew kidd eight year old daughter Irish, and a mother too. I
- 8:33was on sacred ground. Way was fingering megun No, seriously, would you
- 8:39find her. She may be able to break Nick's alibi, and it's our
- 8:41only chance, and it might be her only chance. Nick Shuran's not the
- 8:45boy to leave a loose end line around. I know I've got thirty men,
- 8:48chicken bus depots hell and now luck in this mess, this time of
- 8:52year. I'm a hard boiled cop, Johnny, I've got no Christmas spirit.
- 8:56I'm glad it only comes once per anim. Well, it's not very
- 9:01much to go, and that's for sure. I'll see what I can turn
- 9:03up and check with you later. All right, that's fine. Oh bind
- 9:07the way, Johnny. Yeah, about that friend of yours, well,
- 9:11friend, the guy with the motorbikes. How would you be getting in touch
- 9:16with him? Oh? Yeah, his name's Ralph Sterner. He's in the
- 9:18phone book office in the Micley building. Hard boil cat the kids only young
- 9:24ones. Yeah, sure, now you'll find that. Oh there, good,
- 9:28find her, keep her alive and get it to talk. How long
- 9:30have I got to find her? What do you mean, Nick Sharan?
- 9:33How much longer can you hold him? Johnny? He was turned loose an
- 9:37hour ago. So that was it. A lot of maybes, a lot
- 9:45of questions, and a lot of pressure, John to be done and done
- 9:48fast. Find one Kathleen o'dre former hatcheck girl at the shake Collette keep Nick
- 9:52Sharan's hoodlums away from her and persuaded the talk and three to one Nick was
- 9:58looking for her too. He was free now, on the loose, and
- 10:01he might be anywhere. Only the way it turned out, he wasn't just
- 10:05anywhere. He was in one particular place, parked right smack in front of
- 10:09the precinct station over here, Jenny. He was sitting in the backseat of
- 10:13a sedan and his trigger man, Benny Stark, was at the wheel.
- 10:18Been in a long time, hasn't it, Jenny? About five years?
- 10:22As I remember, Nick, it was that warehouse robbery over in Queens when
- 10:26you got away with forty thousand dollars worth of furs. Ah, you've forgotten
- 10:30me. How was it quitted on that one? Oh? Yeah, I
- 10:33know. After they pull the only witness out of the East River, his
- 10:35feet in a bucket of cement. Just coincidence. I never seen him before.
- 10:39You've seen miss O'Dare before? Sure I have. She works for me.
- 10:43She's a good kid, Jenny, So I hear. I wouldn't hum
- 10:48a hell on that girl's head. She'll be relieved when I tell her that.
- 10:52Get in I want to talk. Oh no, no, sorry,
- 10:54Nick, I like it fine, just the way it is in the car.
- 10:56I'd be outnumbered. Who got me all wrong? Johnny? I don't
- 11:01play that way anymore? What about Benny? Has he reformed too well?
- 11:05Of That's what Benny? Go take a walk, yeah, I said,
- 11:11go take a walk, Okay, get in, Johnny, I watched any
- 11:26of my Nick you were working on this case. Yeah, I'm on it.
- 11:30Why that's what I figured. I was talking to my lawyer in there,
- 11:33and so you go to Rafferty's office. I guess the insurance company's gonna
- 11:39try to welsh on that claim. At you talk, I had a better
- 11:45idea. What's that? You know? It's real nice out in Las Vegas
- 11:50this time of year, Johnny. The man can have a lot of fun
- 11:54out there for the next month with maybe ten thousand dollars to play. What
- 12:00man are you talking about? You? I don't have ten thousand dollars.
- 12:03You will thirty minutes from now if you say it away. Oh, Nick,
- 12:07you're lucky. We're not standing out there on the sidewalk and a car
- 12:11seat. I haven't got room to swing. It's still a fool, eh,
- 12:13I don't know. Why don't you write me about it. You'll have
- 12:15plenty of time up there in the death cell. Suppose I didn't make any
- 12:20claim on that policy, and you wouldn't have any reason to stay on a
- 12:24cake. No, sayal Nick, one hundred grand there is a lot of
- 12:28money I'd want to find out why you didn't make a claim. You know
- 12:31why you're out to pennis on me and so the cops. A man with
- 12:35the wrecked hasn't got a chance. You should have thought of that before you
- 12:39kill Milk Priker. Want to know something, Jenny, I didn't kill him,
- 12:43Well, I'm betting you did. What do you care who killed him?
- 12:46You're not shedding any tears over it, no, but I'd sure hate
- 12:50to see you get away with it, and I'd hate it even more if
- 12:52anything happened to that girl, Kathy Odd. Now what could happen to her?
- 12:58She just might fall in the river. She probably thinks she's safe as
- 13:01long as she hides from the police and refuses to talk. She doesn't know
- 13:05you very well. Let me all wrong, Jenny. You know you hear
- 13:09a lot about peace on earth goodwill toward men around this time of year.
- 13:13But I don't have much goodwill toward the kind of rat you are, and
- 13:16I figured to be more peace on earth if you went on it. Push
- 13:18me and maybe that's what will happen. At least that's fair warning. Yeah,
- 13:24that's fair warning. I'm going to tag you for this. Nick.
- 13:28You can count on it. Yeah, expense account at him two two dollars
- 13:35and forty cents taxi to the east side roomming house of Kathy O Dare.
- 13:39I didn't have much hope of turning up anything. Ed Rafferty and his men
- 13:43had already been through the place inch by inch, but it was the only
- 13:46starting point I had. The landlady was out, and the uniformed policeman led
- 13:50me into Kathy's flat. I spent an hour and a half and got nowhere.
- 13:52I went through her mail, bills, advertisements, casual notes for men
- 13:56she'd met at the club, nothing personal, not even a postcard. There
- 14:00went a pictures, photographs if Kathy or her daughter anywhere in the flat.
- 14:03She made a clean sweep then left in a hurry, and obviously she didn't
- 14:07mean to be found, but I had to find her. In fact,
- 14:13it was dusk when I left. The street lamps were on and the colored
- 14:16Christmas lights in the windows among the block. Snow was falling in big,
- 14:20soft, gentle flakes, and there was a holiday feeling in the air.
- 14:24It was neither the time or the setting a murdering, big contribution, son,
- 14:28You've do something to help pool, Oh sure, how's it? Going
- 14:31this year, Sanna. He'd better than usual, but it just seems never
- 14:35enough to go around, no matter how well blake you son, Thank you,
- 14:39Ken, I'll mention him. Good luck, Pomp, Thank you sons.
- 14:50Well, the city got to clean the streets better. I've been waiting
- 14:54for you. Sorry, Benny, it's not my day for punks. Get
- 14:58your friends. Want to talk to you. Start walking, Johnny down the
- 15:01alley. It's stock down there. Start walking. This ain't just my hand
- 15:07in my pocket. Had better be, Benny, with two cops standing up
- 15:09there on the porch watching you talking about there, ain't no. I smashed
- 15:15him in the mouth and knocked him flat, followed it up and kicked his
- 15:16gun. He rolled over, came to his feet and rushed me. I
- 15:20was hoping he had that coming son, he had a coming hand. Well
- 15:31he sure did get it. Yeah. Hey, you know something, Pop,
- 15:33I think Benny wants to make a contribution to help the poor. Oh
- 15:39he's a good boy at the moment. At least here you go. That
- 15:43ought to help some five hundred dollars for the world. Do the most good.
- 15:48Well, Merry Christmas, Son, Happy New Year. Yeah, same
- 15:52to you. Popping anymore? Hey, taxi Johnny Dollar speaking Ka Lansley.
- 16:17Oh yeah, that's word you wanted to talk to me. That's right.
- 16:19I'm trying to find miss so Dare Do you know where she is? I
- 16:22think I will be once I meet her. I'm an insurance investigator. I
- 16:25want to help her. That's what the other one said. What do you
- 16:29mean? What other one will go short? He shift the eyes. Benny
- 16:33Stark was that his name? He didn't say, mister Dollar. I get
- 16:37he was too busy, busy doing what breaking my good right arm. I'll
- 16:41be right over. From Special Investigator Johnny Dollar, New York City to the
- 16:51home office tri Mutual Insurance Limit at Hartford, Connecticut assignment. The Nick Sharan
- 16:55met her expense account continued. I had him five two dollars and thirty cents
- 17:02taxi to missus Gondler's rooming house, the place Capio there had called home until
- 17:06she disappeared. Come in, get your hat. Look, I'm Johnny Dollar.
- 17:23I talk to you on the phone. It's all right. You can
- 17:26put that gun down. Well, yes, it's you all right, Sorry,
- 17:33DOLLI but I've only got one good arm left, and I may even
- 17:37to cheap it. Pull up a chair. Thanks kind of rough boy,
- 17:41Huh, I'd showed him who was rough. If I could have got ahold
- 17:45of my gun, i'd a blasted him Christmas week or not, I'd have
- 17:48blasted him, mister Doler, I know how you feel me with all these
- 17:52presents to wrap? How can your wrap presence with one arm? But it'd
- 17:55been a paper hanger. Well, I'll be glad to help out, missus
- 17:57Goudler. All right, won't get and see what they'll look? No,
- 18:00I'm sure to appreciate it, and don't worry about their looks. I got
- 18:03to get them wrapped at all. Let's see. You know this paper goes
- 18:08on that one? All right? The water muffler for my nephew over in
- 18:11Brooklyn. You know them terrible winters they have over there. Oh yeah,
- 18:15they're frightful. Of course. It may be better this year the Dodgers won
- 18:18the pennant. Nothing but luck it won't happen next year. They tell me
- 18:23something, Missus Gottler, I'll come, Benny worked you over? Why did
- 18:26he break your arm? Here? Pick this card on it as soon as
- 18:30you get the ribbon tied. Okay, all the time of year like Christmas.
- 18:34He wanted to know where Kathy went, and I said I didn't know
- 18:37it. Jumped on to me, said it was lying. If I could
- 18:40have got hold of that one. Where did she go? By the way,
- 18:44you aiming to break my other arm, mister dollar, with all these
- 18:48packages to wrap, holds your finger on that that I had tied. Now,
- 18:52postmen in Brooklyn are always busting things open. That's one down. Where
- 18:59did you say you want? I didn't no this one. I'll deliver myself
- 19:03so I don't need to be wrapped to careful Kathy live out of here in
- 19:07the middle of the night. You think I set up twenty four hours a
- 19:08day spying on my rumors, you might if the rumor happened to be one
- 19:12of your special favorites who told you that. What's the difference? She was?
- 19:17Wasn't she? Kathy was everybody's favorite. Anybody that ever met her,
- 19:21Oh, you gonna meet them as make remarks about a girl that works in
- 19:23a nightclub. But I'll tell you one thing, mister dollar. Kathleen,
- 19:26No, there's a final lady as you'd ever cared to find, and I
- 19:30would care to find it. Good luck to get in, and if you
- 19:32do, let me know where she is. You helped her pack, didn't
- 19:34you? No? How did you do that? That's about as good as
- 19:37I can get it. Be careful when you deliver it those on time,
- 19:41very time. I didn't know, missus Gottler. I was guessing, but
- 19:45it figured Kathy was scared half to death when she packed up and left here.
- 19:48All she had in the wine was to run and hide. She wouldn't
- 19:51have thought of stripping that flat, taking out every bit of personal identification.
- 19:53Somebody had to help her. How would she go? I don't know.
- 19:56Look, you don't get the idea. I'm on her side. She's up
- 20:02against a rough deal and doesn't even know it. You've got a sample of
- 20:04the way those boys play, and that was only a sample. But Kathy
- 20:08will be a whole lot worse. They're looking for her, and sooner or
- 20:11later they'll find her. Her only chances for me to get to her first.
- 20:15So I'm not lying, mister Dogger. I don't know where she went,
- 20:18and that's the truth. To help me, tried to get her to
- 20:21tell me, but she wouldn't, she said, if I knew it would
- 20:23be dangerous for me. I helped her pack, Yes, but I don't
- 20:26know where she was going. Well, that's sad, I guess I don't
- 20:33know where to turn next. She apparently didn't have any other close friends.
- 20:37I don't even know what she looks like. I've never even seen a picture
- 20:40of her. I was hoping you, well, if that'll do you any
- 20:41good, I've got one right here, my throwing that a picture? What
- 20:45did you think? Give it to me? About a year ago? She's
- 20:49never had many taken, but here it's it nice, really pretty good,
- 20:55don't you think so? Yeah, she's lovely. Well, at least i'll
- 21:00be even a right. When was this taken? Missus Godler? Now?
- 21:03How should I know? Three or four years ago? I guess before she
- 21:07come here to the city. This photographer's address, the name of the town.
- 21:10Is that where she came from? Brambury, Michigan Wall. Yes,
- 21:12that's her hometown, Brambury. I'd forgotten the name of it, and she
- 21:15was just talking about it a week or so ago. She wanted to go
- 21:18home for Christmas, but she said she couldn't say, mister dollar, do
- 21:22you think she might? Maybe it's the most likely place a scared girl would
- 21:26run to home. Anyway, it's worth a chance missus Gotler, I love
- 21:30you what mister dollar. Mister dollar expense account adam six eighty eight dollars and
- 21:41thirty five cents. Hotel and Nincintal's in New York and transportation to Bramburry,
- 21:45Michigan. Brambury turned out to be a lumber village, half hidden among the
- 21:52pine covered hills. It was a little bigger than a wide spot in the
- 21:55road, but not much bigger. A foot of new snow had fallen within
- 21:57the past twenty four hours. A fluffy white blanket lay softly on the trees
- 22:02and the housetops, and filled the deep hollows and the frozen ground. Men
- 22:06in bright red planel shirts drove horse drawn logging sleds through the forest trails,
- 22:11and their shouts sounded sharp and clear. Crystalline tinkled in the icy air.
- 22:17Branberry looked like the place where Christmas was invented. It was beautiful and very
- 22:22quiet. When it came to putting out information, I found it out first
- 22:26when I tried the local telephone operator number. Please, I uh just checked
- 22:33in here at the hotel operator. There doesn't seem to be a phone book,
- 22:37so steal them. That's why traveling people going through h souvenir hunters.
- 22:41I suppose that. Look, I wanted to call the odairs because you put
- 22:45adairs. There ain't but one, that's all Mike. Oh, and that's
- 22:48the one I want to call. Would you mind ringing him? We'll do
- 22:51no good. He ain't there. He's slabbing up a number four meal today.
- 22:53Well, actually it's his daughter I want to talk to. Yeah,
- 22:57that's right, Kathleen. You know, just growed up with her. Oh,
- 23:02well, would you mind friend her? No, I've never met her,
- 23:03but frown. I came here from New York, Johnny Dollar? Now,
- 23:08would you please ring Kathleen live here in New York City? I know
- 23:12where she lives. And what give you the idea she'd be up here?
- 23:15I'm psychic? You what law? Where can I get in touch with her?
- 23:19I wouldn't know anything about it, mister Dollar, and I can't give
- 23:22out that kind of information. You better go on back to New York and
- 23:25write her a letter. Let me talk to your supervisor. Supervisor. Well,
- 23:30I'm all there is, so I guess that's me start talking. I
- 23:34got it. You're welcome. I got the same kind of run around from
- 23:41the hotel proprietor. As soon as I mentioned Kathy, he suddenly forgot his
- 23:45own name age in the time of day, I'm thing sure this town took
- 23:48care of its own. I wondered if the law in Branburry would take the
- 23:52same attitude. I decided I'd better go find out. As it happened,
- 23:59I didn't have part of Oh, on the sidewalk in front of the hotel,
- 24:02the law came to me just a second there. M'd like to have
- 24:07a little talk with you, if you know mine mine for the change to
- 24:10find somebody here who wants to talk. I understand you just got in from
- 24:14New York. Here own business. Look, you know why I'm here,
- 24:18But now everybody in town knows got any identification on you? Yeah? Have
- 24:22you? My name is Martin, Dan Martin. I'm the deputy sheriff in
- 24:27charge of this part of the county. Oh, then you're just the man
- 24:30I was looking for. Is that so? I'm Johnny Dollar insurance investigator.
- 24:34I'm looking for a girl named Kathleen o'dair. Do you know where she is?
- 24:38What do you want with her? I'm working on a murder case.
- 24:41She's a witness. Is there any kind of a charge against her. Oh,
- 24:45I just want to talk to her. What makes you think she's here?
- 24:49Are you a friend of hers, mister Martin? I've been in love
- 24:52with Kathy since we went to grade school. I'd be willing to die for
- 24:56a Does that answer your question? All right? Let me put it this
- 24:59way. You think you're helping her by hiding her out. All of you
- 25:02thinks so, but you're wrong. You're helping her right into her grave.
- 25:07Kathy doesn't figure it that way. She's scared. She doesn't know what she
- 25:10thinks. I know these boys who were after her, they don't play kid
- 25:14games, and sooner or later they're going to find her. So if you
- 25:18love her, and if you know where she is, you better take me
- 25:19to her before it's too late. I don't know. I don't know what
- 25:25it is. Kathy's mixed up, man. I didn't want to ask her,
- 25:27but I know it isn't the police she's afraid of, and I don't
- 25:30think it's you. No. At the time she ran out, I wasn't
- 25:33even in the picture. I'm on her side too, mister Martin, and
- 25:37I've got to see her. Go talk to her father. Oh, Mike,
- 25:41see what he thinks. He's not at home right now? Yeah,
- 25:45I know he's out at number four mil. How do I get there?
- 25:48The county pickup truck is parked down the block. The tire chains bit into
- 26:00the packed snow and pushed the four miles of logging road behind us. It
- 26:04was late afternoon, and the sun had dropped behind the timbered slopes, throwing
- 26:08a pale sheet of cold yellow against the western sky. Here and there,
- 26:14a few scattered lights were coming on in the windows of the village, in
- 26:17the bunkhouses of the lumber Champs, bright twice smarks against the darkening shadows,
- 26:22emptiness, loneliness, and somewhere in it a frightened girl and hiding a girl
- 26:29who'd run away from the city of one hundred million lights and from an unsolved
- 26:33murder. I go Dare was winding up a job working at the big slabbing
- 26:44Song, and I stood by and waited for him to finish. Good night,
- 26:47rider, mister Diller, is this a nastron Okay, that's a least
- 27:03of it. Now we'll after Christmas. I'm sorry to keep you waiting.
- 27:07I'm sorry, mister otaire. My name is John Mind. I know all
- 27:10about you. Dan Martin phone said you was on your way out. Mister
- 27:15Dallan, the answer is no, I see. I've had it over since
- 27:19Dan called. Before i'd have anything happened to Kathy. I'd rather see ten
- 27:23murderers going home now. Look, hiding out won't help. As long as
- 27:27Nick sher and is free, Kathy's in danger. He can't hurt her if
- 27:30he can't find her. I found her, mister o'dair, just by luck.
- 27:34There's not one chance in a million of sounded like a car. Oh,
- 27:40the carnation had drive out here this time of the evening. We walked
- 27:44over to the big door. As the car had stopped about twenty yards away.
- 27:48A man got out and turned toward us. I was standing out of
- 27:51the dock light, so he recognized me. Before I got a good look
- 27:52at him, he jumped back in the car and went for his gun.
- 27:56Benny stuck. Get back, mister Otair. It was too dark to get
- 28:03a decent shot. I tried once more and missed, and the car disappeared
- 28:07behind the trees. Mister Dollar, who is got one of them? That's
- 28:12right, Mike, they found her. There will be another intriguing episode in
- 28:32our story of the Nick Sure Matter Tomorrow Tomorrow, a lonely vigil in the
- 28:37snow, a killer prowls the night, and a lovely lady vanishes. Join
- 28:41us, won't you Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar? Yours Truly Johnny Dollar is
- 28:56starring Bob Bailey, is transcribed in Hollywood, written by Les Prutsfield. It
- 29:00is produced and directed by Jack Johnstone. Be sure to join us tomorrow night
- 29:06at same time and station for the next exciting episode of Yours Truly, Johnny
- 29:11Dollar. This is Roy Rowan speaking welcome back. I absolutely, I really
- 30:22do love this episode in the way it's set up. It shows just the
- 30:29wonderful combination of toughness and kindness in Johnny Doller. On one hand, you
- 30:36see Johnny very tough with Nick Shern and not afraid to take down one of
- 30:41his boys a peg or two. On the other hand, the warmth and
- 30:47humanity as he's talking to the landlady. It's just a great contrast in this
- 30:55character and still a very interesting story. And be sure and listen on Wednesday.
- 31:03As we continue. Now we turn to listener comments and feedback and Lucas
- 31:08comments regarding the matter of reasonable doubt, but he says, first, I
- 31:15just wanted to say thanks for digging those episodes up and putting them out there
- 31:19for us. I'd never heard of Johnny Dollar before I started listening to your
- 31:22podcast a few years ago. He's pretty quaint, don't you think? I
- 31:27agree with you on the matter of reasonable doubt. The girl was the best
- 31:30part of the whole series. I'm surprised with all the speculating Johnny did about
- 31:36the old lady's motivation for calling off the trust. He didn't consider the young
- 31:40girls safety as a motivator. Maybe Johnny had a tumor in that episode.
- 31:45It seemed a pretty basic assumption to me. Well, Lucas, One thing
- 31:49I think we have to give Johnny on this is Johnny knew where Susan was.
- 31:56She was with the newspaper editor and was safe and sound, So I
- 32:00think that that being the case. In reality, he probably missed what they
- 32:07might have what lies they might have told her, though I do still think
- 32:12he should have thought of it. And he says, any who, thanks
- 32:15again and keep up the good work. I don't know if you care,
- 32:17but I listened to you on Stitcher these days. Four hundred hours worth of
- 32:22Detectives while that is quite a bit, I don't know if you use Stitcher,
- 32:27can you just download all of them? That means that if you got
- 32:30stranded on a desert island, if you could find some way to keep the
- 32:34battery going, you could listen to it every waking hour for twenty five days.
- 32:38Got to get that, and folks as emergency kits, well, thanks
- 32:42again so much for the comment, Lucas. That'll do it for today,
- 32:45and we'll be back tomorrow with the amazing mister Malone and we'll continue on with
- 32:52the Nick Schuron matter on Wednesday. In the meantime, send your comments to
