- 0:01Speaker 1: Local News Now, a VOCM News Update. Bit of sun,
- 0:06Speaker 1: bit of cloud, and six degrees in Metro this Sunday afternoon.
- 0:09Speaker 1: I'm Brian Medour. It was a harrowing Saturday for the
- 0:13Speaker 1: crew of a fishing boat off the Avalon Peninsula when
- 0:16Speaker 1: their vessel began taking on water. They were rescued, but
- 0:19Speaker 1: the FV High Roller III ended up smashing against the
- 0:23Speaker 1: rocks at Bay Divert. The Coast Guard got the man
- 0:26Speaker 1: off the boat before that. There's no information as to
- 0:29Speaker 1: what caused the vessel to begin taking on water. It
- 0:33Speaker 1: was a windy one for the 20th annual Cape to
- 0:35Speaker 1: Cabot race yesterday. That didn't stop the runners, though, who
- 0:38Speaker 1: took on the challenging trek from the most easterly point
- 0:41Speaker 1: in North America to the top of Signal Hill. Newcomer
- 0:44Speaker 1: Andrew Peverell with a time of 1.10, the first male
- 0:48Speaker 1: to cross the line. Catherine Cochran, 1.22, the first female
- 0:53Speaker 1: to break the tape. Peverell says the most difficult part
- 0:56Speaker 1: of the race was the final stretch. The first hill
- 1:00Speaker 1: is pretty nasty, but I don't know if anything takes
- 1:02Speaker 1: Signal Hill. As soon as you get onto there, you
- 1:05Speaker 1: start questioning whether you can finish it.
- 1:07Speaker 2: But no, it's probably Signal Hill.
- 1:10Speaker 1: The worst part. Cochran, who was ninth overall, says the
- 1:13Speaker 1: toughest part for her was closer to the middle of
- 1:17Speaker 1: the route. The toughest part is the downhill coming through
- 1:20Speaker 1: Shea Heights, because you feel like your legs are going
- 1:22Speaker 1: to explode. There have been fatalities and injuries in a
- 1:26Speaker 1: fire at a Canadian Armed Forces base in Alberta. Fire
- 1:29Speaker 1: crews scrambled late into the night as fierce winds whipped
- 1:33Speaker 1: flames beyond CFB Wainwright, a massive military training base located
- 1:38Speaker 1: 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton. Speaking to reporters, Defence Minister
- 1:43Speaker 1: David McGinty confirmed casualties still don't have any numbers yet,
- 1:48Speaker 1: though that fire started at about 4 o'clock in the
- 1:52Speaker 1: afternoon on Saturday. Federal Energy Minister believes any assertion that
- 1:56Speaker 1: a disagreement between the provincial government and Innu Nation could
- 2:00Speaker 1: delay the Churchill Falls deal is hypothetical. Minister Tim Hodgson
- 2:05Speaker 1: believes the province will be able to set aside any
- 2:08Speaker 1: difference in opinion following a dispute over the Innu's history
- 2:11Speaker 1: and presence in Labrador. While government officials have been in
- 2:15Speaker 1: communication with the Innu Nation, the Premier has not spoken
- 2:19Speaker 1: with Grand Chief Jody Ashini about the dispute. Hodgson is
- 2:24Speaker 1: optimistic that both sides will find a way forward.
- 2:28Speaker 2: We've been very clear that we work in partnership with
- 2:33Speaker 2: Indigenous peoples. I believe that there's a very constructive dialogue
- 2:38Speaker 2: going on between the Premier and the government and the
- 2:44Speaker 2: Innu Nation, and I'm sure they will work something out.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Would it go ahead if they don't work something out?
- 2:50Speaker 2: That's a hypothetical that I'm not going to worry about.
- 2:53Speaker 1: The JAG Hotel in St. John's got some international attention
- 2:57Speaker 1: this week during a promotional tour for the Netflix series Below.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Actor Charlie Heaton recently appeared as a guest on the
- 3:05Speaker 1: Drew Barrymore show to promote the new series. As part
- 3:08Speaker 1: of the appearance, there was a giveaway for a trip
- 3:11Speaker 1: to this province, which includes a five-night stay at the JAG.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Images of the hotel, which was recently recognized as one
- 3:18Speaker 1: of the best new hotels by the New York Post,
- 3:22Speaker 1: were shown during the segment, which helped promote the facility
- 3:25Speaker 1: to audiences across North America. That segment can be viewed
- 3:29Speaker 1: online at vocm.com. And a former St. John's City Councillor
- 3:35Speaker 1: weighing in on the debate on increasing the salaries of
- 3:38Speaker 1: those elected to the House of Assembly. The Members' Compensation
- 3:41Speaker 1: Review Committee has recommended that all MAJs get a $ 22, 000
- 3:45Speaker 1: raise on their base salary, with even greater increases for
- 3:49Speaker 1: additional roles. Maggie Burton, who previously sat as a councillor-at-large
- 3:54Speaker 1: on St. John's City Council, says increased pay for politicians
- 3:58Speaker 1: is a good idea. She believes that increasing the pay
- 4:01Speaker 1: of elected officials should attract a greater range of people
- 4:04Speaker 1: to seek office. That's your news. I'm Brian Medour.
